Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello there Detroits Wheels.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
Hey Gary, Holy Gary.

Speaker 1 (00:04):
Ho ho hoy Gary, it's great to talk to you,
my friend, you too.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
How are you I'm.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Doing I'm doing really well.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
You've caught us on the very last day of being
at the w LZ studios.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
We're moving to new studios. Gary.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
When was the last time you ever had to do that.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
That's a lot of work, man moves.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Oh my god, is it a lot of work?

Speaker 3 (00:29):
And you know we're broadcasting now on a new platform.
We're going to be in an entirely new space downtown
in the Eastern Market.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
But it's a beautiful facility.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
But it's like stepping into the future, you know, So
it's a little different.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Yeah. Absolutely, Well, I'm sure it's gonna probably be a
lot better once you get settled in. And congratulations, that's exciting.
Thanks for squeezing me in with all this going on.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
Oh absolutely, I wouldn't have it any other way. But
I'm definitely squeezing you in. I see your coming into
town here on December thirteenth at the Magic Bag with
your incredible Christmas show. How many years now have you
been doing this Christmas show? Gary?

Speaker 2 (01:10):
Well, this is our twenty ninth year for Ho Ho,
Holy way did it go? It's twenty nine years. Wow.
It's amazing to think how long we've been doing this
because in the early nineties, you know, mid nineties is
when I first came to you with the first album,
and you guys were their from the beginning.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Yeah, I mean it really does.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
It doesn't feel like thirty though, but it's always great
whenever you come out and start kicking out, you know,
the Christmas songs, and I see that you have some
new stuff, is that right?

Speaker 2 (01:42):
Yeah? We put out a new single. I did a
version of Angels We've Heard on High because last year
I put out the Nutcracker Suite. This year, I did
Angels We've Heard on High a lieu of a new
record because next year it's going to be my thirtieth
and thirtieth anniversary for Christmas stuff, so I wanted to
put out a new there on the thirtieth so I
can hold them back some tracks. But I snuck another

(02:03):
one out this year and just We've Heard on High
And you know, everybody always knows that melody. You know,
I could play it for you if.

Speaker 4 (02:11):
You want, Okay, Yeah, but you.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Know, of course, as the holy style it I'd like
to put it in a little you know.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Absolutely, So whatever made you leave that one off the
table in the beginning, I mean that that really does
sound like a Gary Hoey Christmas song.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Well, I think what it was is I was going through,
you know, most of the catalog that was out there,
and it just at the time when I was trying
to pick songs, it just I don't if it seemed
too happy to me or I just didn't feel I
could give it the treatment that I've done to some
of the other songs in the way that I did, Like,
that's that's my my thing is how can I treat

(03:08):
this differently? How can I add to it? And it
just hadn't come to me yet, and then it did
later on.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
So I don't think I've heard the sugar Plum Fairy.
Can you hit me with that a little bit?

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (03:20):
The way the Nutcracker right yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
I had a little intro and then the guitars it
does the keyboard party goes.

Speaker 5 (03:32):
Wow, and then I go up high and go all
the different lines and and everything.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
That now that one, now that definitely sounds like Gary
Hoey right there. Christmas music You've done about I don't know,
maybe forty Christmas songs three CDs worth of material.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Soah, we're close to forty songs now, we're over forty
now with all the new ones.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
I don't know how you keep pulling them out, but boy,
those two sound great. And you've got more in the
can for what an upcoming thirtieth anniversary release? Is that? Right?

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Yes? I do. I wow songs that I've been recording
and working on, and I'm pretty close to finishing the
album now and I'll have it out for the thirtieth anniversary,
and you know, I'm looking forward to getting out some
new stuff and there's some really fun ones on there.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
Yeah, So we mentioned that, you know, up until this point,
all of this Christmas stuff has been on CD, and
of course you can now get it online on all
the platforms on Spotify and all that. Am I looking right?
Am I seeing this coming out on vinyl?

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Yees? This? The new stuff will be out on vinyl.
But right now we have our first ever red Christmas
vinyl limited edition on the website shows and we basically
put together another Greatest Hits of the Holy Stuff and
it has you know, it has everything from The Grinch
to Carold the bells and you know, all the all

(05:12):
the ones that people really like the first Noel and
we did. We came out with it last year for
a Record Store Day, and this year I got a
chance to press some limited amounts for live and online
and just you know, for people that like collectible.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
Stuff absolutely, and that would be me. And I didn't
see that last year for record store Days. So that
was last year's Black Friday, huh. And maybe we didn't
get it at the store that I went to obviously,
So that's something I'm gonna have to jump on the
website and pick up because there's nothing like having that
thick vinyl sound absolutely.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
And for me to hear all my old Christmas original
arrangements on the vinyl record. Because my son Ian has
a turntable in his bedroom, I went in and I
popped it on and it just that sound. Instantly, I'm like,
this is the way it was supposed to sound. And
so it's really fun.

Speaker 3 (06:03):
So you've got another guitar giveaway, the seventeenth annual Ho
Ho Hoy Guitar.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
Yeah, we're doing our Christmas Day guitar giveaway like we've
been doing for years and if they go to the
website Garyhowy dot com and if they hit the newsletter,
they'll automatically enter it into the contest and then we
can email them if they're the winner, and we'll let
them know and wishing everybody luck because I've got a
black sender with a maple neck sitting right next to me,

(06:30):
ready to go for somebody autographed.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
Oh there you go. Well, you know I am.

Speaker 3 (06:35):
I am privileged and proud to own a signed Gary
Hoy guitar, and it's it's one of my pride and joys.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
So I thank you for that. Awesome we did.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
We did so many of these Christmas shows, and of
course I'm looking forward to December thirteenth once again at
the Magic Bag. That's a great place for you. You know,
I never really ask you, Gary, but who's in the
bank with you this year? Are you using the same
guys or what?

Speaker 2 (07:04):
Yeah, I'm still playing with When I came last year,
I had the girl, Leah Bluestein, who's an amazing drummer
Berkeley graduate. She's also playing with the Eagles of Jeff Metal.
She's their drummer and she just gets on a tour
with Brian Setser opening up with her band. So she's
like an up and rising star, I almost want to say.

(07:24):
And her fiancees plays bas Mike. He's twenty something. And
my son he's not coming to the Magic Bag, but
he's doing most of the rest of the tour. He
couldn't make that week, but my son Ian is playing
double guitar with me. And when you hear the four
of us brow, that's like another level of energy. And
these kids are all in their twenties and I'm playing

(07:45):
with them. It's kind of cool.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
Well, you know, I never thought of you as like
a veteran or an older guy, that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Thank you, man, I appreciate that. Bro. Well, they trying
to keep up with me sometimes on the road they're like, hey,
oh man, you got to slow down. I'm like, come on, kids,
let's go.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
And I know that you just recently lost a couple
of family members over the past couple of years.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Right, yeah, so about year and a half.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
Yeah, yeah, your sister and your mom both.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
So are you and the rest of the family holding
up all right on the holidays?

Speaker 2 (08:16):
Well, you know what we are. We're you know, we're
excited for Christmas. My you know, lot of my mom
and my sister, which has been tough, but we've been
able to kind of get past the you know that
mode of just you know, you feeling the loss and
trying to honor them more and live more. And I
did find out my daughter is going to have a
baby in February. Well, Grandpa Hoey, look at that. So

(08:37):
it's nice when new babies come and new life comes
into the family. But we're doing good. We're exciting for
the holidays. We're feeling blessed that we have a great
tour ahead of us, playing on stage with my son.
So I'm feeling that's kind of filling me up a
lot with that stuff. And then the new record coming
out called Avalanche coming out in March. Oh, the rock
album full of songs that we select kind of what

(09:00):
I've been going through the last five years. And it's
an album really proud of. I can't wait you to
hear it.

Speaker 3 (09:06):
It's good to see that, you know. Yeah, we all
have that in our family, you know, obviously I have.
I've lost both my parents as well, so but we
always try and remember them that the holidays and you know,
enjoy the Christmas music and the family and the food
and everything, so it's always great.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
Yeah, we try to remember the funny things and the
good things that they did. You know, that's kind of
what I do is I smile a lot of thinking
of my family, you know, what we what we did
together and stuff.

Speaker 3 (09:35):
So how long have you been working on this new
album now that's coming out this this spring?

Speaker 2 (09:40):
This new album? I've been working on it off and
on over the literally the last five years, because it'll
be going on six years when this record comes out.
And it's been songs I've been working on that I've
been believing in, putting my heart and soul into and
they they came together in a really great way. I have.
I have Max Norman, who Mick who's done Auzie and Megadeth.

(10:02):
So the album sounds incredible and it's just a collection
of songs that reflect a lot of my life and
what happened in a cool way, positive way. And that's
why I called the album Avalanche because I felt like
I got hit by an avalanche and you know, you
can come through hard times with you know, as a

(10:24):
writer and a songwriter, sometimes the best songs come out
in those times. And this album, I'm telling you Doug.
I'm singing probably the best I've ever sung, and I
found some tunes that really reflect you know what I
was feeling.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
Wow, that is great. I can't wait to hear that. Yeah, congratulations,
I can't wait for you too.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
So have you I know that you've worked with other
bands before. As far as a producer, have you been
doing any producing at all?

Speaker 2 (10:52):
Yeah, I just finished an album with Lead It Forward.
It's a second album.

Speaker 3 (10:55):
Oh yeah, I saw it's finally coming out. I see
it's just about ready to come out.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
It's just about to come out, and it's a great album.
She really is singing some of the best I've heard
her sing, great rock songs. And she did a song
with Doro Pesh from Germany. They did a duet on
one song. It's it's like a killer radio track. So
I'm hoping that comes out soon. I can't wait.

Speaker 3 (11:18):
So you mentioned Ozzie and you had to have seen.
Ozzie was inducted again into the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame, which is fantastic. He really seemed excited this
this year, more than the last time with Sabbath. I
think he's starting to realize, you know what, this stuff
kind of means in the twilight of his career. So

(11:41):
what were your thoughts on seeing Ozzy, because I know
you guys are close.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
Well, seeing Ozzy up there was great because he's such
a legend and you know, he's obviously later in his
years and he's given us so much. But yeah, I
auditioned for Ozzie back in the eighties when he was
looking for guitarists, and you know, it's amazing because I
was in a small case, from a small to time
and I sent in a demo tape. I got a call.
Next thing, you know, I'm playing with Ozzie and he
literally gave me, you know, a belief in myself because

(12:10):
even though I didn't end up getting the gig with
Zack Wild, he looked at me and said, you know,
you should move to la You should come to where
the music is. You know, just having someone like that
just give you the second a second look is you know,
it makes you feel like you might have something, and
he made me have that. So's he's a great guy
and he's funny and he's definitely deserving of everything.

Speaker 3 (12:32):
Now, since then, have you had an opportunity to like
maybe open up for him or anything like that over the.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
Years, you know, I've never had a chance to open
up for him. I think, you know, just obviously the
promoters and the way they like to put the packages together.
It just never happened, right, But it's been fun to
just see everything and be friends with Zach Wilde and
I've you know, had great jams with Zach on stage,
you know, in other settings and stuff to be playing
with him, which is cool.

Speaker 1 (12:58):
Now, didn't you tell me last year that you were going.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
To do the oh, the rock and Roll Fantasy Camp.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
Yes, the rock and Roll Fantasy Camp.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
Yes, we have another camp coming up in February with
Stuart Copeland for the Police. We have just Skunk Baxter
on guitar. We have GARYL. Jones on bass. It's gonna
be a great camp in la in February.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
Oh right, well that's in February. Man.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
You are busy, boy, Yes, I'm all lined up. Things
are lined up, man, I'm very busy. I've been just
saying yes to too many things, trying to figure it
out later.

Speaker 3 (13:32):
Before you before I let you go, I gotta hear
a little, you know, I gotta hear a little of
the grink so cranks some up.

Speaker 2 (13:38):
Absolutely, my friend, we got we got some grinch for
you right here.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
All right, there you go.

Speaker 3 (14:09):
Ah, now it's starting to feel like the holidays. There
it is all right, Yes, angels, we have heard on
High is the brand new single. Look for the vinyl
on the website. I'm going to go there right after
we get dud talking, you know.

Speaker 1 (14:23):
I just love it. Gary.

Speaker 3 (14:24):
Congratulations, A tip of the cap to you for continuing
this adventure. And we'll see you December thirteenth at the
Magic Bag.

Speaker 2 (14:33):
I can't wait, my friend, Thank you so much for
having me on and all the years of great friendship
and support you the best.

Speaker 3 (14:40):
Yeah, thirty years. So it is amazing. We're both grandfathers,
and we weren't when we first met.

Speaker 1 (14:48):
So there you go.

Speaker 2 (14:50):
Here we go. There's a proof here man.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
That tells you everything.

Speaker 3 (14:54):

Speaker 2 (14:58):
