(03:00):
week.
Well, in today's podcast we diveinto the rich history and
theology of the hymn GraceGreater Than Our Sin.
So come along.
So come along with us as weexplore the origins, story and
(03:21):
profound gospel message of Grace.
So come along with us as weexplore the origins story and
the profound gospel message ofGrace.
So let's begin by going back intime and uncovering the history
behind this extraordinary hymn.
(03:52):
Born in Salineville, ohio, in1849, julia Harriet Johnston was
the daughter of a Presbyterianminister.
She authored numerous books onChristian missions and
missionaries.
In addition to composing over600 hymns, many of Johnston's
(04:16):
hymn texts found their way intopublished books, showcasing her
prolific contributions toChristian worship music.
Actively involved in herchurch's Sunday School and the
Presbyterian Missionary Societyof Peoria, johnston was deeply
(04:36):
committed to her faith and had adesire to see that faith
expressed through music.
One of her most popular hymns, grace Greater Than Our Sin, she
wrote around 1910, inspired byRomans 5, 20-21, where Paul
writes Now the law came in toincrease the trespass, but where
(05:02):
sin increased, grace abounded, all the more so that as sin
reigned in death, grace alsomight reign through
righteousness, leading toeternal life through Jesus
Christ, our Lord.
Johnston writes a beautifullylyrical picture of the abounding
(05:26):
grace of God in the face of sin.
In a time where societalrestrictions were placed on
women's roles in teaching, preaching, even in public prayer
, johnston found the perfectmedium for sharing her
theological insights with othersthrough writing hymns.
(05:46):
Initially, her hymn was set tothe tune Moody, composed by
Daniel B Towner, and the hymngained recognition.
Interestingly, the tune waslater renamed to honor Towner,
himself a Methodist musician whoheld a prominent position at
Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.
(06:08):
This renaming occurred when thehymnal committee for the
Baptist hymnal in 1956 sought toacknowledge and pay tribute to
Towner's significantcontribution to Christian music.
Johnston passed away in Peoria, illinois, in 1919, just nine
(06:32):
years after writing this song.
However, the message of thishymn and that of the
transformative power of God'sgrace in the life of a believer
continues to stand as atestament to her power forwards.
(06:54):
Marvelous grace of our lovingLord, grace that exceeds our sin
and our guilt, yonder onCalvary's mount, out poured
there where the blood of theLamb was spilt.
In Ephesians, chapter 1, verse7, we read In him we have
(07:20):
redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our
trespasses according to theriches of his grace.
This verse from Ephesiansfocuses in on the song's theme
of redemption through the bloodof Christ.
It emphasizes that ourforgiveness and redemption are
(07:43):
not based on our own merit butare freely given to us through
the abundant riches of God'sgrace.
I love how beautifully shecaptures the idea of God's grace
by saying grace that exceedsour sin and our guilt.
I just love that phrase.
(08:04):
Grace that exceeds, ah, thisgrace that exceeds was poured
out for us on Calvary's mountainthrough the blood of the Lamb.
It paints a vivid picture ofthe boundless grace we find
(08:25):
through the finished work ofJesus Christ on the cross.
She then moves into verse 2 andsays Sin and despair, like the
sea waves, cold, threaten thesoul with infinite loss.
Grace that is greater, yes, grace untold points to the
(08:50):
refuge, the mighty cross Grace.
The image of sea waves evokes asense of danger,
unpredictability and vastness,demonstrating the devastating
impact of sin and despair on oursoul.
(09:11):
Johnson's metaphor suggeststhat just as turbulent waves
pose a threat to sailors at sea,sin and despair pose a threat
to the well-being and salvationof our very souls.
The sentiment of the hymn'stext on the destructive power of
(09:33):
sin is matched only by itsconfidence in the untold grace
that points us to our refuge, the cross of Christ.
Psalm 46 speaks to finding ourrefuge in God and it says God is
(09:54):
our refuge and strength, a verypresent help.
Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be movedinto the heart of the sea,
though the waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at
its swelling.
Even in the midst of the chaosand upheaval of the natural
(10:20):
world, including the mountainsbeing moved into the heart of
the sea and the waters roaringand foaming, the psalmist
expresses confidence and trustin God's protection and
deliverance.
And then in Hebrews, chapter 4,verse 16, we find where our
(10:45):
confidence and trust shouldtruly be placed.
Let us then, with confidence, draw near to the throne of grace
that we may receive mercy andfind grace to help in time of
(11:06):
need.
Hebrews reassures us that, despite our struggles with sin,
we can find refuge and we canfind grace at the throne of God,
and Johnston's hymn aligns withthis truth by reminding us of
(11:29):
the surpassing greatness ofGod's grace, which points us to
the refuge of the mighty cross, the source of our salvation and
help in our time of need.
Marvelous, infinite, matchlessgrace freely bestowed on all who
(11:57):
believe, all who are longing tosee his face.
Will you, this moment, hisgrace receive?
I love this verse.
Marvelous, infinite, matchlessgrace.
(12:22):
Romans, chapter 2, verses 8 and9, say for by grace you have
been saved through faith, andthis not of your own doing.
It is the gift of God, not aresult of works, so that no one
(12:48):
may boast Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace, freely bestowed
on all who believe.
We see in these verses that Paulemphasizes the foundational
doctrine of salvation by grace, through faith.
(13:11):
He reminds us that oursalvation is entirely God's gift
, not something we can earnthrough our own efforts or pay
back through hard work.
And Paul's words alignperfectly with Johnston's
(13:34):
proclamation of God's marvelous, infinite, matchless grace,
freely bestowed on all whobelieve.
Then the hymn extends aninvitation.
It extends an invitation toreceive this free gift of grace.
(14:00):
Will you, this moment, hisgrace receive?
It's an invitation to thoselonging to be reconciled with
God, urging them to receive hisgrace, not later, not when you
(14:21):
get around to it, but in thisvery moment.
Johnston, verse after verse, shows us a powerful picture of
God's matchless grace that'spleading for us.
(14:46):
And wait, don't wait.
Will you, this moment, hisgrace receive?
Grace, grace, god's grace, grace that will pardon and
(15:10):
cleanse within.
Grace, grace, god's grace, grace that is greater than all
our sin.
For this refrain, let's jumpback into Romans, chapter 5,
(15:33):
verse 20 and 21.
Now the law came in to increasethe trespass, but where sin
increased, grace abounded allthe more so that, as sin reigned
in death, grace also mightreign through righteousness,
(15:56):
leading to eternal life throughJesus Christ, our Lord.
Here in Romans, paul magnifiesthis superabundance of God's
grace in the face of sin.
It declares that, no matter howgreat our sin may be, god's
(16:21):
grace is infinitely better.
This rings so true at the endof the hymn's refrain, as it
proclaims God's grace is greaterthan all our sin.
(16:42):
Repeated after each verse, therefrain encapsulates the
profound truth that God's gracenot only pardons and cleanses us
, but also reigns triumphantlyover sin and death leading us to
(17:08):
eternal life through JesusChrist, our Lord.
This hymn continues to resonatewith believers of all
denominations worldwide, servingas a source of comfort, hope
(17:31):
and assurance of God's boundlessgrace.
May we carry with us theassurance that God's grace is
indeed greater than all our sin.
Let the truth of Johnston'swords resound in your hearts as
(17:55):
you face the trials andtribulations of this life,
meaning that our refuge andstrength, our promise and hope
in God's grace is found in themighty cross of Jesus.
(18:18):
Please Grace God's grace, gracethat will pardon and cleanse
within Grace.
Grace God's grace, grace thatis greater than all our sin.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
Motherless Chris, of
all loving Lord, chris, that
exceeds our sin and our guilt.
Yonder on Calvary's mount, howpoor there where the blood of
(19:32):
the Lamb was spelt.
Grace, grace, god's grace, grace that will pardon and
cleanse within Grace.
Grace, god's grace, grace thatis greater than all our sin.
(20:00):
Sin and despair like the sea, waves, cold, threaten the soul
(20:22):
Within vanilla's.
Chris, that is greater.
Yes, chris, untold Point to therefuge, the mighty cross.
Grace, grace, god's grace, grace that will pardon and
(20:47):
cleanse within Grace.
Grace, god's grace, chris, thatis greater than all our sin.
Motherless, infinite, matchlessgrace Freely bestowed on all
(21:32):
who believe, all who are longingto see His face.
God's grace, grace that willpardon and cleanse within Grace.
(21:53):
Grace, god's grace, grace thatis greater than all our sin.
Grace, grace, god's grace, grace that will pardon and
(22:14):
cleanse within Grace.
Grace, god's grace, grace thatis greater than all our sin.
