Hello and welcome If you are new here.
I'm Taylor.

industry for over 10 years.
Alongside that, I'm also a yogaand dance teacher and I'm the
creator and founder of the Dive, which is the fastest growing

(00:37):
and professional.
Join us for conversations onmindset behind the scenes,
stories of professionals in theindustry and how you can
navigate the challenges that weface as artists.
Once a week, you'll have aprofessional guest come on the
show who we will interview, andevery second week you'll have me
as your podcast host, whereI'll be coming on and sharing

(00:57):
with you practical exercises andresources to help you on your
way to becoming a professionalin the industry.
Okay, welcome to another podcast.
This is going to be a beautiful, short and sweet episode.

(01:19):
I will be starting to do theseepisodes every second week.
They are focused on reallygiving you actionable steps to
move forward and apply somethings that I've been starting
to teach over the past few yearsto students and also into the
programs that we've beenstarting to launch and resources
that we've been giving out forthe dive.
So that's what the episode oftoday is going to be about.

(01:42):
The title, as you have probablyseen, is about building
unshakable confidence, and Ireally wanted to talk on this
topic because it's somethingthat we all struggle with
confidence, confidence in ourabilities, in how we do well in
the audition room, on stage.
Really, confidence comes downto so many different things and

(02:04):
I really wanted to give youactionable steps to start
building that unshakableconfidence within you, because
it definitely is possible, it istaught, it's not something that
you're just like born with.
You know, some people say like,oh, you're born confident,
you're born talented.
I don't believe that.
I believe that we're allbrought in with specific skills

(02:24):
and we're all at differentstages of our journey.
So when we are in the arts andwe're in a big room with all
other professionals, it's reallyeasy to compare and not feel
confident because we're reallyjust going at it with so many
different people and, just likeI said, we're all at different
journeys and all on differentroads to actually where we are

(02:45):
on our own career of becoming aprofessional in musical theatre.
So I brought my notes with metoday.
So if you're watching onYouTube or even on the socials,
I'll be going through my journalbecause I really wanted to give
you this episode, to reallyjust kind of give you an insight
in my journaling practice.

(03:07):
I love journaling.
It's something that's reallyreally helped me over the years
gain more clarity on what I'mthinking and whether it's
important or not, and also helpjust decipher the influx of
information that we kind of getgiven, especially if you're
training and you're in full time, you're just learning so much.
But even now, being aprofessional in the arts, there

(03:29):
is, you know, auditions thathappened last week, which we'll
get into and just so manyfactors that come into the day.
You know, when are you doingwashing your clothes, when are
you, you know, going to yoga ordoing the gym and then are you
going to cook, like there's somany things that go on, or doing
the gym and then are you goingto cook, like there's so many
things that go on.
And journaling for me, has justbeen that thing that helps me
gain more clarity and gain moreinsights into.

(03:51):
Okay, let's just take a moment, let me write out everything
that's in my head, and thataction of actually just writing
it out really just helps youkeep it on the paper and almost
like downloading yourinformation onto paper and out
of the brain.
So what does it mean?
To actually build unshakableconfidence?
So I want to emphasis on theword build, because we need to

(04:14):
start looking at our bodies andour whole self as like a house,
or a car, or a house is a reallygood analogy, because think
about a house that is unshakable.
What do you really need?
Like?
You need to have a reallystrong foundation.
It needs walls and windows, avery strong, like cemented floor
to hold up all this structureso that when we are going in to

(04:38):
the high stress weather or thehigh stress of auditions and
performances on stage eightshows a week we really need to
have a strong base to withstandall of that.
It can't just like tip over atthe you know first side of a
dance double pirouette, and it'sfine.
If you can't do that, that'stotally good, but that's.
I love kind of putting thingsinto analogies and to visuals.

(05:00):
If you've started to learn fromme, you'll see lots of that.
I love giving kind of just waysfor you to envision what I'm
talking about.
But yeah, let's start to thinkof ourselves today on this
episode as a house.
So we need, like I said, weneed the strong foundation.
We need the things around us tobe really solid so that when

(05:20):
stresses do come in, we not onlystand strong in it, but we are
really assured and we're reallyresilient between all of those,
the setbacks and things thatcome in.
And that's what we're going tobe talking on today.
The real two fundamental thingsthat are going to be your walls
and your strong structure isresilience and reassurance.

(05:43):
So they're the two things Iwant to go into today, and what
I really just want to highlighthere is that confidence comes
and goes, and I've put somewherehere that I mean I've got the
definition of confidence that Ican put over here and that
basically is it's saying herethe feelings or belief in one's

(06:04):
abilities, qualities andjudgment.
It involves having a sense ofassurance and trust in oneself,
which can manifest in variousareas of our life.
Confidence isn't about beingperfect or never feeling nervous
, but rather about having theresilience and self-assurance to
face challenges, take risks andpersist through setbacks.

(06:29):
So it's really what I was justsaying.
It's all about not necessarilybeing perfect and not feeling
nervous.
I was doing an audition lastweek and I was still feeling
nervous, but when you start tolearn how to have a strong,
resilient mindset.
I talk a lot about mindset onthe dive when you start to learn
how to really put yourselfforward in a way that is

(06:53):
resilient and in a way that youalready feel quite self-assured
in your abilities.
That's where confidence comesfrom.
So it's not just like I'm agood dancer so now I feel
confident.
No, it's so.
It actually is a deeper rootedthing and a lot of things, um,
are a lot more deeper than, um,this surface level things that
we kind of go oh okay, forexample, you may have gone into

(07:17):
an audition and you don't feellike you're a good singer and
then you're already stressed andnow you're not a confident
singer because of just that.
But really, you know, if youwere putting in the work to do a
singing class once a week andyou were actually showing up and
I'm already giving so manydifferent things away that I
want to talk about in thispodcast but by actually showing

(07:40):
up and doing the thing, you'rebuilding that resilience,
because you're not only showingup time and time again, despite
the setbacks, but you're alsostarting to share with yourself
that yeah, like literally by theact of showing up and working
on it, you're showing yourselfthat you are working on it and
that you're assuring yourselfthat you're doing what you need

(08:01):
to do to progress, and in thatprogression you will basically
start to build that confidence, and that's where it comes from.
It doesn't just come when youwake up one day and just like
all of a sudden, yay, I'mself-assured and I feel amazing
and confident, and it'ssomething that builds over time.
Just like all of a sudden, yay,I'm self-assured and I feel
amazing and confident, and it'ssomething that builds over time.
Just like a house.

(08:22):
If we have a crack in our wallof our house, you could easily
just put a piece of tape over it.
But when you know if the stormcomes through you know a big
three-day audition or aneight-show week comes through
that crack is going to getbigger and bigger and bigger.
So we need to maybe look atbringing a stronger foundation.
We're getting the cement out,we're getting the DIY on the

(08:42):
walls.
This is what I mean when we'retalking about building strong
foundations around you so thatwhen the setbacks come, when the
tricky auditions come, when theeight show weeks and all of the
life stuff is happening, youare able to still be confident
because of how you are buildingthe things that are surrounding

(09:04):
your life.
So let's get into two of theways that you can actually start
to implement and build uponeach.
So, starting with resilience uh,resilience building really
starts with embracing failure, and I really want to like put

(09:25):
failure on its head, because, inmy eyes, you can never really
truly fail in musical theater, like, there's not a test.
You know, maybe, when you're infull-time and you're doing a
test to like get a certificate, but we never even use that.
When you're going into anaudition, right, we don't go.
Hey, um, I'll be singing thisand also I've got a cert for,
and that, like, it's just notsomething that we do anyway.

(09:46):
But by embracing failure as alearning opportunity, so
actually switching okay, maybe Ididn't get into the show, but
that doesn't mean that youhaven't learned something right
and by looking at it this way,you not only start to see uh,
things more of a lesson, but youstart to shift your mindset

(10:08):
from like well, I tried, itdidn't work, so there must be
something wrong.
I'm never going to do it again, right?
No, you need.
Just there's a reason why.
Right now, if you are listeningin and you've just been for some
auditions and it's not goingyour way and you're not getting
in.
There's a reason why you arenot getting in and it's not the
universe trying to get back atyou.

(10:29):
It's not anyone being like, oh,you're terrible, you're not
getting in.
There's lessons in every singleaudition and if you go into it
with that mindset, okay, what'sthe lesson today?
What am I going to learn?
What am I learning from thisexperience?
You know we are creatives.
We love to create things, welove to perform, we love to use

(10:50):
our emotions and our bodies andall the sort of things.
So we're constantly in thatgrowth and expansion and moving
and creating.
So if we're not seeing bigauditions and performances as
areas for growth and learning, then we're really starting to
miss out on so much beautybehind the art of what we're
doing as well.

(11:11):
So that's the first thing.
I mean.
I've already spoken a littlebit about why it's important,
but I've put here in my notesand what I was writing out just
before if you start usingsetbacks, failures, as places to
redirect, learn and grow, you'll start to feel better and
your next actions will show that, and that's something that
we've been starting to learn alittle bit in the momentum

(11:32):
program, which is a onlineprogram for aspiring musical
theater performers looking tobecome professionals in the
industry.
In our first actual module, wetalk on mindset and what the
professional mindset is built upof, and we talk about how our
thoughts actually just thoughtsuntil we attach feelings to them

(11:55):
which lead to actions, whichlead to our results.
So an action step for you rightnow in building that resilience
and trying to shift intolearning something from the
lesson itself.
You can begin by reflecting oneach performance audition and
just simply writing out whatwent well, what can be improved,

(12:18):
and literally just write thatout.
It doesn't have to be socomplicated.
I feel like a lot of peoplewhen I get asked questions about
how to improve this or do that, like everyone's expecting this
most profound thing that they'venever heard of.
But a lot of the things that Iteach are very, very simple,
very actionable and verypractical for you to go and do

(12:39):
now.
The thing is that a lot ofthings that are easy to do are
also easy not to do, and that'swhere the percentage of the
people that do really well inthe theater and those that miss
out on the opportunity to havean awesome, thriving career that
we love and that we can enjoy.
So by simply reflecting.
If you are reflecting, I mean Ialways talk about.

(13:02):
I'm like a big reflector, andwhat I mean by that is the
journaling, like writing out, okay, how did I go, what went
well, what, how can I improve?
Because if you're someone, especially now coming out of
full-time and you've hadteachers telling you all this
stuff, and then all of a suddenyou're just by now coming out of
full-time and you've hadteachers telling you all this
stuff and then all of a suddenyou're just by yourself, you
need to start building a frameof mind that can support you,

(13:25):
and what I mean by that isyou've got to start reflecting
and being like okay, how did Igo?
What can I work on?
What, how, what, where am Igoing to go from here?
Because you may have amazingagent that can do that, but I
honestly swear that you are theonly person that is going to
actually actionably take thesteps to move forward.
And if you're waiting for anagent, you're waiting for people

(13:46):
around you to tell you like noone is more obsessed with your
dream and your desire and whereyou want to go in musical
theater than you, right, andwhere you want to go in musical
theater than you, right?
So we have to start becomingour own best reflective self,
someone that is able to look atwhere we are and go right, what
do we need?
And if you are confused, thenreach out, Because by doing this

(14:08):
, you're actually bringingyourself the assurance and the
confidence that you do know whatyou need to do and I'm a big
believer in that, too that youalready know yes, you listening.
Now you do know what you needto do, and I'm a big believer in
that, too, that you alreadyknow yes, you listening.
Now you already know exactlywhat you need to do to improve
and to go to that next step.
You're just not taking theactions to get there.
And if you are amazing, brilliant, but nine times out of
10, we know what we need to do,but we don't do what we need to

(14:31):
do regularly.
And the missing littleingredient I'll give you to that
is you've just lost yourpassion.
You've lost why you're doing it.
So if you're feeling likethings are a little bit
overwhelming now, take a pauseand just start asking yourself
right, why am I doing this?
What's the purpose of I'm doingthis?
And you know, really, keepasking yourself that question

(14:52):
till you get to something thatis actually more meaningful,
that will inspire you and moveyou forward.
The second thing I've put hereto really build the resilience
in you.
I know I'm like giving you lotsof different information.
Actually, let's just take abreath for a second.
So, if you're listening in,take a breath, take a little
pause.
Maybe you haven't paused today.
I know, just today I know I'vejust been coming on giving you

(15:14):
all the things Great, amazing.
So the second thing I was goingto give you today is on really
developing that growth mindset.
We've kind of just beenspeaking about it already, but
it's really important to startdeveloping this growth mindset
and a mindset that is pullingyou towards, like, improvement

(15:37):
and growth and areas of likeokay, what's the next step?
I've always kind of beensurrounded by mentors and
teachers that have shown me thisand now that's just how I live
my life.
I'm very solution based, veryvirgo, uh, and this has just
really helped me with just keepmoving forward and focusing on
growth and focusing on you knowwhat's the next step, and not

(16:00):
dwelling in like oh, the pastand how terrible things have
gone and stuff, because that'snot improving you.
That's just like keeping youwhere you are and, of course, I
fully accept and recommendfeeling the feelings when you
need to, but don't stay therefor too long, like if you need
to, if you spend a day, a daylike for me, it's like spend a
few hours or a few minutes andthen just go.

(16:22):
You know what, brush it off, give yourself a laugh, you know,
laugh with a friend aboutsomething, and you know, just
move on.
You know we're in musicaltheater, we're here to tell
stories, we're here to have fun.
You know nothing is really, unless you're playing.
You know a very seriouscharacter or something.
Nine times out of 10, thingsaren't as deep as you think they
are and if they are, generallywhat happens is it's got to do

(16:47):
with something that's a littlebit more deep-rooted and maybe
you're being triggered andthat's a whole nother episode in
itself.
But we really need to startbuilding a growth mindset
because that encourages ourcontinuous improvement and your
adaptability, which is a massivething in musical theater.
That's really crucial becausethe industry itself is just

(17:07):
ever-changing.
Do you feel that you feel likeevery year?
I do.
I feel every single year likeauditions are different and
different things are coming anddifferent producers and
different choreographers.
You're working with differentpeople every day, so our
mindsets need to be in thatadaptability way so that we can

(17:28):
adapt to the things that aregoing on.
If you're watching online, I'mlike I've got my pen in my right
hand and I'm literally wavingit around like a wand, and I've
also got my cat here Link LinkyInto the frame as well.
Side note we get back.
So an action step that you canactually take to build
resilience is to reframe yourthoughts.

(17:49):
So reframing is a term that youmay or may not have heard about
before, but it's something thatI've been starting to teach to
students inside our Momentumprogram, which is our program
that's online for through thedive, this online platform that
you're hearing now, I've beenstarting to build out programs

(18:10):
and offerings and things forstudents like yourself to learn
and grow and really justunderstand how to get to the
next stage of where you'rewanting to be in the musical
theater industry.
So we talk about reframing andbasically what we do is it just
allows you to change or replacesomething that's really critical

(18:33):
like a critical thought into aframe of mind, or reframing it
into something that's reallycritical like a critical thought
into a frame of mind orreframing it into something that
is a little bit more positiveand a little bit more helpful,
because a lot of the time ourcritical thoughts aren't
actually helpful.
They're actually diminishing usand bringing us into that lower
state vibration where we don'treally want to be, especially
when you've not really done, maybe you're not done, so you

(18:56):
know, by just beingself-critical you're literally
layering on layers of just nogood vibes, and we're all about
good vibes at the dive.
Good vibes, that's it.
You can do this with nearly anycritical or negative thought or
a thought that maybe is just notempowering you.
You can just start to reframeit.
Think as if a negative thoughtis in a picture frame.

(19:20):
I've kind of got my.
If you're watching online, I'vegot a frame here that is
actually perfect, because I'vegot a photo of my two cats and
I've got it in a frame, butactually the picture itself of
my cats doesn't fit the actualframe, so it's just got a little
picture inside a bigger frame, but this is perfect.

(19:41):
So think of the my cats or alittle picture inside a big
frame as something that's justnot right.
It's not working, it's not,it's not complementing the
actual frame and the stabilitythat we're looking for.
So you can look at that andstart to maybe even use that as
a cool analogy.
If a critical thought or athought that's not serving you
is coming up, is it matching theframe and foundation and the

(20:05):
success and the fulfillment andall the goodness that you really
are laying out for yourself?
And if it's not, let's reframeit, get a different frame.
I might have to reframe mycat's photo there.
So let's talk quickly now onreassurance and reassurance
comes from.

(20:25):
I just want to say reassuranceis something that I've
personally been learning a lotabout.
Growing up, I was kind of likehard on myself and I didn't
really know the power ofreassurance and now, getting a
bit, a little bit older, I'munderstanding that.

(20:46):
You know, we're all kind ofjust like kids at the end of the
day and we're all just doingour best right, and the need, I
think, for reassurance to peopleis so much more important than
ever now, with so muchinformation out there, so many
things going on.
I really love in my teachingand how I live my life now,

(21:08):
giving space for you to feel howyou need to feel work, how you
need to work but also celebratepeople.
I think that needs to change inour industry.
I never used to kind of fullycelebrate anyone gosh, I make
myself sound like a terribleperson but I used to kind of

(21:29):
always think, oh, I thinkthey're amazing.
But I never used to like go andtell them or reassure them that
what they did was amazing.
And it wasn't until I startedbeing dance captain on a few
shows and not only just givingnotes to change you know
something that maybe have nothadn't gone, but actually
reassure people of things thathave gone good.

(21:51):
Because when you're in the artsitself, a lot of the time the
notes that you get are justnotes for you to change things
that have gone wrong.
Because that's kind of our jobas dance captains and people of
the, you know, in the creativeteam.
We're just here looking to makethe best possible show happen

(22:11):
and you know, if we just wentaround with telling you all the
good things, you know wewouldn't work on the things that
actually needed changing.
But I think there is some spacethat you can sprinkle in and
even if you're not a dancecaptain and you're not in a
musical theater show, you knowthere is space for you right now
and that's definitely an actionstep I would take is there's
someone in your life right nowwhether it's a friend, a

(22:34):
relative that could use with alittle bit of reassurance, just
to know.
Let them know that they'redoing a great job, like they're
showing up there.
It could be anything, and Iknow you listening in.
Maybe there's someone you canthink of right now that could do
with a little bit ofreassurance, and maybe it's
yourself.
Maybe you need to just reassureyourself, like, oh, I actually
am showing up, I actually amdoing the thing, and that's just

(22:57):
going to really help you buildthe reassurance.
So one of the ways that you cancontinue to reassure yourself
and build on the reassurance tohelp promote the confidence that
you're looking for is to notonly use the tools of reflecting
and reframing your thoughts, but you can start to create a
list, and that's something Iwould love for you to actually
do today, after listening tothis, or whenever you next get

(23:20):
the availability to do so.
Start creating kind of a listof where you want to be, what do
you want to achieve and youknow what's like the ultimate
goal of why you're performingand where you want to achieve
and what's the ultimate goal ofwhy you're performing and where
you want to go.
And out of that list you canbegin to create like five to ten
short affirmations ofreassurance or affirmations of

(23:42):
just kind of actually havingthat goal or getting to that
place.
Because what we were talkingabout before and what we've been
teaching inside the programsfor the dive is, you know, the
thoughts that we think are justthoughts until we give them
feelings.
Then they produce the actionsthat we take and then that gives
us the results.
So by actively reaffirming toyourself that I am, you know,

(24:06):
doesn't have to be like I'm themost talented person ever, but
it can just be something simple, like I am improving every
single day by such and such andsuch.
So bringing it into the presentand making it feel real to you,
but also sprinkling in waysthat you can still give yourself
a little bit of wonder.

(24:27):
You know, go into this withcuriosity.
Don't think you know yourself alittle bit of wonder, you know,
go into this with curiosity.
Don't think, you know, don'tkind of.
It doesn't have to be anaffirmation or an intention.
That's like I am in a musicaltoday and I get three contracts
tomorrow.
Like, make it a bit morerealistic and a bit more
open-ended so that you, you know, you really don't know what the
possibilities are going to belike you know, on a side note,

(24:49):
for the past 10 years, like ifyou told me all the things that
I've been that I would have been, I would have just done like I
would just look at you and thinkyou're absolutely mad.
So by being open topossibilities, you actually
increase the likelihood of yougetting more opportunities.
When we're a bit morenarrow-minded and I know this
may even sound a bit more likein kind of two ways, because we

(25:12):
do want to be focused and likelaser-sharped on where we're
going but there is thisbeautiful quality if you can
just open the umbrella and youknow, clean the house, like what
we're just talking about before, making the space that you live
in and the space you knowwithin your body and even your
surroundings open and clean andexpansive, you're just allowing

(25:32):
more things to come into yoursphere.
I know there's a little bitmore energy that I'm talking on
there if you don't gel with that, but that's everything that we
speak about the dive, I'm allabout energy, I'm all about all
the practices that are gonnabasically help you in the
wellness space and looking afteryourself.
But definitely creating spacefor yourself is going to allow

(25:54):
you the space to havereassurance and have the things
that are going to promote you tothat next level.
So, just coming into the endnow, because I don't I don't
want to make this too big of anepisode I wanted to give you
some actionable steps to buildthat strong foundation so that
you can have the confidence thatyou seek.
But I just wanted to kind ofleave you with that.

(26:16):
You know, the house ofconfidence, your house, what
you're building right now, takestime.
It's not going to happen today,it's.
You know, if you just startedbuilding a two-story,
three-story house, it's going totake time.
It can take a few months, itcan take a few years and there

(26:37):
may be, you know, may come, crumble down and then go back up
, like there's so many differentways of you know it's the ebb
and flow of life, right?
So just know that this is.
You know you don't just go anddo an affirmation and then all
of a sudden, tomorrow you'rejust going to be that confident.

moving forward.
This could be going to yoga, doing stuff that is wellness for
you.
You know cooking, having a dayfor yourself of you know, rest.
These are all things thatyou're actually going to start
building a strong foundation and, yeah, it's basically just

(28:07):
going to help you in the longrun, build that resilience.
It's going to reassure you thatyou're not only here but you're
showing up every single day andover time, you're going to
start seeing your confidencesoar.

Are You A Charlotte?

Are You A Charlotte?

In 1997, actress Kristin Davis’ life was forever changed when she took on the role of Charlotte York in Sex and the City. As we watched Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte navigate relationships in NYC, the show helped push once unacceptable conversation topics out of the shadows and altered the narrative around women and sex. We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today. "Are you a Charlotte?" is much more than just rewatching this beloved show, it brings the past and the present together as we talk with heart, humor and of course some optimism.
