Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, welcome
back to another episode on the
Dive Podcast.
If you're watching in on theYouTube, I'm in Sydney now.
I've just arrived here doingSunset Boulevard at the Sydney
Opera House and I was able to goin yesterday as we were
starting a bit of a dry tech Foranyone that doesn't know what
that means basically running theshow and all the technical
(00:21):
elements before the cast join usand come on stage.
So that's happening today.
So we're about to all meet andget on stage reunite and it's
just going to be such awonderful experience.
But I thought we would diveinto today kind of what does
your life look like after fulltime and how to navigate that.
(00:41):
By the end of this episodeyou're going to be able to have
a clear picture of what you'relooking to achieve, why you're
wanting to do it, and kind ofget yourself in a frame of mind
to actually know what the nextsteps are for you and really
start to navigate that in a waythat is promoting yourself and
positioning yourself to actuallyachieve those things.
(01:04):
So I'm going to get straightinto it, but I just want to also
say thank you so much.
This incredible community thatwe're creating inside the Dive
is just next level.
If you are not already in ourfree community on Facebook,
please go down and check thelink in this description,
because we're building thatcommunity.
We have over 100 students inthere and that's where you're
(01:27):
just going to get all theupdates.
You're going to know exactlywhen our new programs are
launching any updates on oursocial media, and we're just
building such a wonderfulcommunity and if you're new here
, please go and check it out.
We would love to have you inthere.
So, okay, let's get into today'sepisode.
So you've just finishedfull-time.
What do you do now?
(01:48):
What's happening?
Sometimes?
Okay, right now, you justreally have to actually look at
what your life has just been, which has been hectic.
You've gone from likestructured days to now maybe
weeks days staring at theceiling, staring at the wall,
going what do I do now?
And this is so normal becauseyou have just had not only just
in full time, but from school upuntil now you've had someone
(02:12):
telling you when to come toclass, when to show up, when to
actually do the things, even tothe extent of when do you have
lunch.
So actually navigating what yourday-to-day life can look like
is sometimes nerve-wracking, andsometimes this can really get
us into a frame of mind of Ihave no idea what to do, or
(02:33):
there's so much time in my daythat you just feel overwhelmed
because you're just like, well,I could start this, but I also
have the rest of the day off.
I get you, I get you and I'mhere to help you out.
So the first thing we always, always, always, always want to
do in any circumstance, butparticularly once you're
finished full time and you'vegot days off, weeks off, months
(02:56):
off, years off to go right, whatdo I do?
Now?
You need to get really, reallyclear.
We need to get really clear onwhat we are striving for.
What are we going for?
So that's the first thing Iwant to share with you is what
do you want?
What do you desire most?
Write this down and if you're anotepad person girl or guy
(03:18):
definitely get that out, becausewith these podcast sessions,
you'll definitely want to have alittle notebook because we can
work as you go, you can pause it.
If you are a pen and paper sortof girl or guy, definitely go
get that, because this episodeis definitely all about getting
to the nitty gritty.
Let's get into exactly what wewant to create.
So the first thing that we wantto really be focusing in on is
(03:38):
what do you want?
What do you desire most of all?
Above anything else, we need toget really clear on what you
are wanting to achieve, becauseif you don't know what you're
wanting to achieve, it's goingto be really hard to navigate
our next steps.
So you can simply ask thisquestion what do I desire most?
Don't focus on how you're goingto get there yet.
(04:00):
Just write down I like to workwith at least a top three.
You can also just work with oneIf there's one top goal that
you want to work with, amazing, but I find three to five, no
more than five, because it canjust get a bit overwhelming.
There's definitely a top threeright now that you would desire
most, and if you're strugglingwith trying to figure out what
(04:21):
those are, you can actuallycategorize them so you can make
it a top goal for your health, atop goal for your mindset and a
top goal for your career.
Please pick and choose yourcategories.
I'm just going to give outofferings and suggestions today,
so please morph it to your lifeand what is most important to
you, and I really just want tohighlight on the desire moment,
(04:43):
like I feel as though a lot ofthe time when we're navigating
outside of full time, we've beenworking on ourselves.
We know our skills, we knowwhere we are and what we're kind
of wanting to go for.
But we need to live in a spaceof imagine, if you know.
Let's just take a moment rightnow I'm putting the pen down
Imagine if you could actuallyachieve that desired thing,
(05:05):
because a lot of the time we setourselves back thinking that
it's not possible.
So why even go for it?
And I like to think as ourbrains and our minds we need to
start getting on board.
We need to get on board.
I like to say, like the tailortrain, you need to get on board
with yourself, because no one isgoing to love your dream, no
(05:26):
one is going to get up and makeyour dream a reality other than
you, and if you don't desire it,it's not going to happen.
A lot of the time when we'renavigating outside of full time,
we are looking for motivation, and the motivation will only
come when your desire is strong.
If your desire is strong, youwill wake up, you will go do the
thing, no questions asked.
(05:47):
So a lot of the time when we'renavigating the motivation.
A better question is what do Iwant and what am I actually
willing to do to actuallyachieve it?
So let's get really clear.
Ask yourself what do you wantand write it down.
You can even make a littlebrainstorm session by going, you
know, just writing on paper, top 10.
(06:07):
You can write out the top 10things you desire and then
narrow it back down to the topfive and then maybe even the top
three.
So once you know exactly whatyou're wanting to achieve,
you've got to ask yourself whatwill your life look like once
that is achieved?
Again, it's going back intothat desire Really understand
what your life will look likewhen that has happened or when
(06:30):
you're actually living thatexperience.
As an example, you've just comeout of full-time.
You really want a musical.
Okay, what is your life goingto look like when you're in that
musical?
You're in eight shows a week.
You're playing that characteryou always dreamed of.
You're traveling and touringthe world Incredible.
What does your life look like?
What are you eating?
Who are you spending your timewith, how are you spending your
(06:54):
time and what are your days?
Feel like Once you know that andagain, dream a little bit,
because the power of all of thisand what I'm getting at is that
once you understand that, youcan then understand the
characteristics, the traits andthe personal self of that future
self.
(07:15):
If I achieved your top goal, how would I be acting, what
would I be doing and I've beenteaching this inside the
programs that we've been If Iachieved that top goal of yours
of being in a musical, how wouldI show up, act and behave?
(07:36):
Because by actually answeringthis question you can navigate
the most powerful and potentreason of goal setting and
something that I've beenteaching inside our Momentum
program.
If you don't know about that, you can definitely go in the
show notes and check it out andI'll just share with you a
little bit about actually thaton this topic, because we had
just been going through theMomentum program.
(07:56):
It's a program that I actuallylaunched on how to become a
professional in musical theaterand emphasis on the becoming,
because a lot of us want thething, a lot of us want the goal
, we want the thing, we justwant it now.
And the thing actually that'sgoing to get you there is about
embodying and becoming thatindividual, that future version
of yourself in the now and howwe do that is getting clear.
(08:19):
How we do that is by writing itdown and writing out those
characteristics and starting tobuild a lifestyle surrounded by
those traits.
Because once you actually startembodying those traits, the
goal is going to take care ofitself, it is going to feel a
lot more fun, it's going to feela lot more fulfilled and you're
just going to have a lot moreenergy.
Because when you startembodying that actual thing,
(08:39):
you're not going to be a lotmore energy, because when you
start embodying that actualthing, you're not going to be
worrying about oh I need thatthing, and then I'll be happy.
There's actually a problem withgoals in terms of goal-oriented
achievement, meaning that I willbe happy when that happens,
like you will feel succeeded, like you're a success when you
(09:00):
would get a musical, you willfeel acknowledged when you get
that thing.
But the lack in that is thatyou're never going to feel happy
, you're never going to feellike you're worthy enough until
you actually get that thingright.
So instead, wouldn't that feelnicer to start embodying those
things now, showing up as thateight show week version of you
(09:20):
now and starting to work on that, so that when you actually
achieve the thing and you'rethere.
You're not only able to bethere, but you're able to really
be there for the longevity.
You're able to be there from aplace of yes, like of course I'm
here because I have therecovery ready to go.
I know how to look after myselfso that when these shows come up
(09:42):
, if you're a swing or you'recovering, nothing is going to be
too overwhelming because youhave set this foundation for
yourself that you've alreadybeen planning.
You've already been planningthe version of you that is going
to look after yourself and havethe best time ever.
So we do that by really gettingclear on what and who this
version of yourself is.
(10:02):
So, as I mentioned, we havethis momentum program that is
really sharing with studentslike yourself how to navigate
the industry after full time.
You can check this out by thelink in our description.
It has all the informationabout it and it's really just
going to help you get themindset, get the goals, get
really clear on why you are hereto actually then know how to
(10:26):
navigate the industry.
So I always want to share aboutsome of the programs and the
things that we're launching andcreating in the dive, because
it's just been amazing, we'vehad over 10 students go through
the program currently and thesuccess and just the vibe inside
of the community has just beenawesome.
And it's just awesome to reallyconnect with all of you and see
(10:47):
this progression happening inyour life.
And I truly believe that youdon't need to do it alone.
We are here as a community.
We're all wanting the same sortof thing.
You're just needing that extralittle bit of support, that bit
of mentoring, that little bit ofcommunity to navigate the highs
and lows that this industrygives.
Okay, so once you're reallyclear on what your top three
(11:08):
goals are, what the topcharacteristics and what your
life's basically going to looklike in the now, based on that
future version of yourself, you're going to do the second
step, which is why, why do youwant to be there?
Why do you actually want thatthing?
And the best exercise you cando right now is go, have a look
(11:28):
at those top goals and askyourself why.
Answer it out, but then I wantyou to ask yourself why again,
potentially, up until I say, keep asking yourself why, until
you feel your heart or somethingkind of coming up.
You know, a bit of emotion, because when you actually
connect to something deeper.
A lot of the time when we'rewanting something, it's very
(11:51):
material.
It's very like this top layermaterial stuff that isn't really
promoting what you deeply,deeply want.
And so, by asking yourself whyand why, again at least four to
five times, come back to meright in the community what
you've actually come up with andit's going to blow your mind of
(12:11):
why you actually want thatthing.
It could be that you've alwayswant to share stories, you want
to be on a stage and you want tojust live a life of creating
and sharing stories and beingwith supportive people and all
this stuff.
So it's going to be differentfor everyone.
But by just doing this smallexercise, you're going to
literally open your mind toactually reasons why you truly
(12:34):
want it and really navigate itfrom a reason of not for anyone
else, like, why do you want it?
Not because it's going to makesomeone else happy, why do you
want it?
And really navigate it from areason of not for anyone else,
like, why do you want it?
Not because it's going to makesomeone else happy, why do you
want it?
And there's a hidden stepwithin this when you actually
ask yourself why you want thegoal, you are turning on the
signal in your brain that'sgoing to surpass motivation,
because when you actuallyrealize why you want the goal,
(12:57):
your actual action steps to goahead and go and do that goal is
going to be just a no brainer.
You're just going to wake upand go bang.
I know exactly what I wantbecause I know why I'm doing it.
A lot of the time when we'retrying to navigate motivation or
we're trying to navigate theindustry, we're doing it in a
way of oh, I've got to go tosinging classes, I've got to do
(13:18):
this because that's whateveryone else is doing and if I
don't do it, I'm going to fallbehind.
Can you feel that energyalready?
We don't want that energy.
We want like I'm going tosinging class because I'm ready
to nail my belt.
I want to work on this.
I want to work on this piece ofmaterial.
We've got to fall back in thelove of what we're doing,
because if you're not lovingwhat you're doing, like really
(13:38):
we shouldn't just be doing it atall.
We're not here for long and weneed to make sure that what
we're doing and how we're doingit is supportive and is coming
from a place of enjoyment andactual passion.
I know that this can kind of godownhill, especially after
full-time, because, okay, you'vejust trained so long, you've
just trained so long to actuallyget into the thing, and so now
(14:02):
you feel like the only best nextstep is to get the thing, and
without it you may feel likeyou're inadequate or you should
be somewhere where you're not.
And all I will say right now isthat by connecting to your why,
by connecting to somethingdeeper, you are just going to
bring that back out of actuallywhy you want it.
You're going to be putting theaction steps in to achieve it
(14:22):
and you're just going to connectto something bigger.
You're going to connect, maybe, back to that child who went
into dance class for the firsttime and dance, singing, acting,
whatever it is, and you're justgoing to keep connecting to
that and you're going to bring afun element to that and that's
just going to help you navigatethose, maybe a few years after
full-time.
As you're going to bring a funelement to that and that's just
going to help you navigate those, maybe a few years after
full-time, as you're going toaudition, getting the rejection
(14:43):
showing up, it's going to feelso much nicer when you start
embodying that future self.
Because ask yourself this if youwere a professional already in
musical theater, how would yourespond to rejection?
How do you think not how you, anyone else you believe how?
How would you think you wouldshow up?
Would you crumble and be a messon the floor, or would you go?
(15:03):
That's okay.
Like I've already done a fewshows, I know that what is meant
for me is right for me and thisis how my future self would go
forward about pushing anyemotions aside.
This is not about being happy, happy, chappy, 24 7.
(15:24):
This is just positioningyourself and your mind in a
place where you can navigate theindustry with a bit more
clarity, a bit more confidenceand a bit more direction because
, like I said, no one is goingto hold your hand.
No one is coming to hold yourhand and pick you up to go to
that next audition.
By navigating how, ornavigating what you want and why
you want it, it's going to makethe rejection easier.
(15:45):
It's going to make what you'redoing so much easier because you
not only know what you're doing, but you know why you're doing
it.
So the final step that you wantto think about is when we know
what we want.
A lot of the times if you wereactually struggling on a side
note here to understand what youwant.
A lot of the time our brainkind of goes into this negative
(16:06):
loop of what we don't want.
So that can actually be reallypowerful.
And I'm going to show with youhow you can actually use the
power of what you don't want tonavigate what you do want.
Because for everything that youdon't want there's an opposite.
So a lot of the time if you'renavigating this, ask yourself
okay, if you don't know what youwant, you can write out what
don't you want and then find theopposite of that, because
(16:29):
that's just gonna help youactually navigate exactly what
you do want.
So once you know what, once youknow why, let's get into when.
Because it's all great and wellnavigating.
Okay, I know what I want and Iknow why I want it.
But the only thing that isgoing to help you become a
professional musical theaterperformer is action.
Nothing else is going to getyou there.
(16:50):
We can have the energetics, wecan have the reasons why, we can
have exactly what we want to do, but at the end of the day, if
you are not showing up andyou're not putting in the action
, nothing is going to happen foryou.
So let's create an action stepthat you can take right now.
So once you've got clear onexactly what and you've got
(17:10):
clear on why, then you can askyourself okay, when am I going
to start putting thesecharacteristics, when am I going
to start putting the thingsthat I want into my calendar?
And there's a simple exercisethat you can do so to get an
understanding of when you'regoing to do these things.
It can be really overwhelming,right?
Okay, like, when am I going tosing?
When am I going to dance?
(17:31):
When am I going to do all this?
It can become reallyoverwhelming, especially if you
have more time, because you'relike, oh, how do I structure my
days to actually do all thethings that I want?
I highly recommend a book calledthe One Thing for any performer
listening to this right now, especially if you're navigating
a headspace of gosh.
There is just so much to do andI don't know what to start, and
(17:54):
you can simply ask yourselfthis question what is the one
thing I can do to improve thisor to implement this?
It's just going to help yourbrain navigate.
Just one simple thing, becausea lot of the time, that's all we
need.
It's all we need in that moment.
We only need one extra thing orone key step to move forward.
(18:14):
Let's put this into an example.
That may be true for you.
Okay, top goal I want to be ina musical theater show Amazing.
You've asked yourself why doyou want that?
Great.
Then we need to get reallyspecific.
We need to dig a little deeper.
We need to get into the soil,we need to get into the core of.
Okay, what does that actuallymean for me?
So you can ask yourself what'sthe one thing I need to do to
get into that musical?
(18:35):
And this be okay.
I know I need to improve mysinging.
I know I need to improve mydancing, whatever it is, and if
it's multiple things, fantastic, write that out.
But then you really want tostart asking yourself okay,
what's the one thing out ofsinging, dancing, acting, that I
know I need to work on to getinto a musical and write that
out?
Okay, as an example, it mightbe dancing.
(18:57):
Right, what's the one thing Ican do to improve my dancing?
Okay, it could be go to class,it could be getting a private.
You could even go one step evenfurther and ask yourself what's
the one part of dancing that Ineed to improve on.
So this could be on style, itcould be tap, it could be ballet
.
Once we actually get reallyspecific, we actually push away
(19:19):
all this mind overwhelmment.
I don't think that's a word,but it actually positions
yourself in a place of clarity, because once you get really
clear on what you actually needto achieve, it's so much easier
to go ahead and put the actionsteps in to actually go and
achieve it.
So that's what you're going todo for each of the goals Find
(19:40):
yourself one action step.
That's the true action stepthat you need to do.
Next, you can do this by, ifyou're wanting to then put it
into a schedule, which wedefinitely want to do, because,
again, action is the only thingthat's going to move you forward
is to ask yourself okay, what'sthe one thing I can do within
the next month that will help meget closer to that goal, and
(20:01):
you can write that into yourmonthly goal.
Then you can go into two weeksOkay, what's one thing I can do
to get closer to my goal in twoweeks, based on the monthly goal
, and then you can go evenfurther to like what's one thing
I can do this week to getcloser to my two-week goal, and
then the daily goal, and thenwhat you'll end up doing is
(20:21):
you'll find yourself with adaily goal that could be okay if
it was to improve my dancestyle.
It could be today to research amovie and watch that style, and
that's today, and slowly start.
What you'll start to do isyou'll build this one percent
day that you actually start toimprove incrementally and the
daily thing is going to be somuch more achievable.
(20:43):
It's not going to be okay.
Today I need to go to 10 danceclasses and do all this.
It's too much.
It's too much, and a lot of thetimes when we're going into our
goals, we think that massiveaction in a short amount of time
is going to get us to the thingcloser.
And what's actually going to bebetter for you is to build the
1%, build the incremental stepsto actually build this long and
(21:05):
extensive base for yourself.
Because once you actually again, once you achieve the goal of
getting into a musical, imagineif you actually did it
incrementally.
It's literally about becoming.
It's about becoming this personwho has the discipline, who has
the knowledge that it's notabout a quick win, it's not
about.
I just want to do 10 danceclasses, get it over and done,
(21:27):
then I'll be in a musical andthen I arrive.
If you have this mentality now,I'm telling you you're going to
come into musical theater andyou're going to come out of it
as quick as you came in.
Because if you're not buildingthe fundamental steps and the
foundational work right now,it's going to be so difficult to
obtain and stay at eight shows.
It's going to be so difficultto navigate your life, how to
(21:50):
balance your relationships, howto balance all of this around
this crazy, wonderful life thatwe call musical theater.
And so, by putting in thesedaily actions and by navigating
your top goals, by what we'vebeen doing in this podcast today
, I hope you're going to be ableto get really clear on what
you're wanting to achieve.
You're going to understand whyyou're doing it and that's just
(22:12):
really going to help you on thatdaily basis as you build that
progression.
Because by implementing the why, you're going to know that.
Okay, by doing this oneresearch today, if you have
already that weekly, bi-weekly,monthly goal mapped out, you
know that by actually doing thedaily thing today is equal to
(22:32):
that monthly goal achieved, because it's all broken down
until today, and when I startedto implement this guys side note
was insane, because I alwaysthought, ok, I want to get into
that thing, so I want it asquick as possible and you just
want it.
And there was two things thatwere happening with this
approach.
(22:52):
The first thing was that myenergy towards it was so
desperate, it was so like, itwas so tense, and so when I was
actually going to do the thing,if I was in an audition, it was
too desperate and the panelreally saw that and my energy
saw that too.
I was more nervous.
I was increased pressure onmyself, and so instead, when I
(23:14):
started to take a backseat andgo hold on, okay, what does my
actual life look like and whatdoes this professional version
of myself look like and how canI start navigating a routine
today that can help support metomorrow?
And so when you start toimplement this and you don't put
all this pressure on gettingsuch quick success in such a
short time, you're not onlygoing to be able to enjoy the
(23:37):
process, but you're going tostart building an actual full
lifestyle that is going topromote wellness and promote
longevity.
When you are there, I feel likeI just spoke forever.
But I hope that today's episodeis giving you kind of that
structure, giving the new, thatstructure of what you're wanting
(23:57):
to achieve, getting reallyclear on your top three to five
goals, understanding why you'rewanting to get there.
It's clear on your top three tofive goals, understanding why
you're wanting to get there.
It's fundamental to yourmotivation and your fulfillment
on a daily basis.
And then I hope that throughthat you're able to understand
when are you actually going todo the thing, what's the one
thing you can do today to startimplementing or start getting
(24:18):
you closer to the ultimateversion of you, to that top
three goal, that top one goalthat you're looking for.
So I hope that you've enjoyedthe episode.
