Speaker 1 (00:01):
Petrusen Money Show Podcast. Thanks for being with us, Tim
kats here as the NCED Double A Tournament is in
full swing now with the opening day sixteen games on
this Thursday in the first round sixteen more tomorrow. By
the time we get to Sunday, we will be down
to the sweet sixteen going into the second weekend of play.
(00:23):
And joining us now is the sportsbook brand manager for
bet Online. He is Dave Mason, and he joins us
to talk NCED Double A Tournament, the odds and the
field of sixty eight day. We appreciate the time and
know you're busy, but this is a fun time of year,
isn't it.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Oh? I love it, man, I mean it's busy, really
one of the busiest weeks of.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
The year, but it's a lot of fun. I love it.
A big college basketball fan, so I love it.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Put in perspectives, if you can, how big March Madness
is compared to other big events in the sports world,
like the Super Bowl, the World Series.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Yeah, I mean, you know it's it's it's one of
the biggest events for sure. And you know you you
were us, we were We use the word events, right,
So I mean the Super bowls one day, so it's
kind of hard to compare the two.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
But for one day, nothing beats the Super Bowl except
the election.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
The election was absolutely crazy, so many best came in.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
But well, but that that's something weird. We won't talk
about that. But yeah, the super Bowl for.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
One day, one event, nothing comes close to that. But
you know, March Madness for a three week event, let's
call a series or something, nothing comes close to March Madness.
It does so much. It's just so much action. You know,
North American boys for North American sports. You know, talking
about World books, then you're talking about.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Something like World Cup. But yeah, March Mads is huge.
It's right there with the Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
What advice do you give to newcomers are betting on
the NCAA tournament who maybe aren't watching college basketball since
November and the non conference games and the thanks Giving
tournaments and the holiday tournaments, and all of a sudden,
they're all their eyes are on their brackets and they're
watching their favorite college team, or they're watching certain teams
try to upset others. What advice do you give to
(02:10):
those newbies who come in with money looking to make
some money.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Yeah, that's a good question. You know, Basketball's funny. It
starts when it comes to our betting, are our players.
You know, it starts kind of slow, even though the
early odds are the Sharps love the early odds. In
November and December, there's not a lot of action comes in,
just serious basketball guys. Then come to December or January
(02:35):
and February, when football is starting to slow down and
there's more open nights without football, then more players come in.
Plus the con conference games start start getting a full gear.
And then the final thing is March Madness. That's when
the wave of players come in during March, not only
for the conference tournaments, but for the big tournament, the
Big Dance, so you know, and then of course there's
(02:57):
people going to be betting on this who don't.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
I haven't bet at all their movies.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
And you know, I get the same advice no matter
what the sport is, you know, bet recreational. Bet within
your means. That's first and foremost. You know, if you're losing,
don't double down the chase. If you're winning, don't get
greedy and start, you know, doubling down to increase your bets.
Bet within your means. You know bet recreational that that's
(03:23):
the common advice, but you know, for for basic advice
for basketball, and again this goes for all sports. Never
ignore the early line. So many betters just come in
the late. They come in right before posts. Those late odds,
when the game closes, when the odds.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Close, those are the sharpest, they're.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
They're the hardest to beat long term. The earlier the
odds come out, the softer they are. So never never
ignore the early odds.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Dave Mason, sportsbook brand manager for bet Online, joining us
here and five seventy LA Sports and Petro some Money
Show podcast. You look at the tournaments and the seedings
one through sixteen, and there was a time that a
sixteen seed never beat a one seed and very few
times we saw a fifteen beata two. That twelve five
matchup in the NCAA tournament, for whatever reason, has become
(04:13):
that popular bet because maybe there's the most upsets twelve
beating fives? Is that something you see a lot of
money coming on are those twelve five matchups, And even
now those thirteen four matchups.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Absolutely well becase the twelve five One's kind of funny.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
They do get they do.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Seem overall, they do seem to get more a lot
more action. That being said, you know, it's kind of
they aren't often as big as upsets as they seem.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
I mean, call it.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
In Colorado State they're favored, they're the twelve seed, but
they're actually favored wow in their game.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
What else you.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
See SD They're only two and a half point underdogs
to Michigan in Colora I say that right, they're prety memphods,
so they're favored over mented. So you know, I always
tell people look at the spreads, not just you know
a lot of people are just betting on the seed
that the seating really doesn't.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
Know the whole sword.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Sure that tells a lot of the story, but thew
the worst seed isn't always the worst team. I mean,
you know, like I said, those twelve five they had
those those quote unquote upsets happen every year for a
reason because all they're not that big of an upset,
and like I said, one of the twelves is actually favored.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
This year A one sixteen matchup on Friday in Raleigh,
Norfolk State taking on the number one seed Florida Gators
a twenty eight and a half point underdog are the
Spartans of Norfolk State and Dave they're head coach, they're
Robert Jones says they have a monster chip on their
(05:51):
shoulder entering this first round NCAA tournament game. He says,
Florida is really really good. We understand that, but really,
are we that bad that the point spread is like that?
Twenty eight and a half points Dave.
Speaker 4 (06:04):
Well Duke is favored by thirty two overt Saint Mary's.
Oh yeah, so those one seeds often are right up
their high twenties, low thirties. Yeah, I mean, shoot, those
one seeds are and the four one seeds. This year
they seem to have a bigger gap between the one
(06:27):
seeds and the two seeds. They're their four number one
one seeds are clear cut.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
They're great teams. So you know they're playing those sixteen seeds.
Speaker 5 (06:36):
Man, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
I know a couple of those upsets having over a
recent memory, but I can't see it this well.
Speaker 5 (06:42):
Yeah, I mean the thing about the big spreads are I.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Mean, I'm looking to the action now.
Speaker 5 (06:48):
They're not good for our volume.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
I mean, the.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Bigger the spread, the less bets come in.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
So so yeah, we're not big and all.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Those highest spreads, the smaller to spread more action comes in.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
All right, Dave, who are the favorites right now? To
make the final four? The top four teams that will
be heading to San Antonio. Who are the favorites and
who are you picking?
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (07:12):
All four number one seeds out of the South, all
burned their even money.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Out of the East Duke minus one forty, Midwest Houston
plus one twenty five, and West Florida team we're talking
about it minus one thirty. I mean, two of those
teams are odds on favorites, the other one's that even money.
So that just tells you how good these teams are.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
Who am I picking?
Speaker 2 (07:32):
I'm picking two of those number one seeds, Alabama out
of the East and Florida out of the West.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
I love that Florida team.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Then in the South, I'm picking a two seed Michigan
State in the Midwest another SEC team Tennessee.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
So I'm picking three SEC teams.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
Yeah, the SEC for a reason got fourteen teams into
the field of sixty eights. As we get down to
the final four of the teams you just mentioned, how
about the national champion who is going to be the
one cutting it down. Who are the favorites to win
it all? Dave, and who are you picking?
Speaker 5 (08:04):
Yeah, once again, dude plus two to seventy, Florida four
to one.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
They're getting bets the most, including me.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
There might sick Auburn plus five fifty and Houston six
to one.
Speaker 5 (08:15):
But yeah, I'm really pro Florida team.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
I mean they were.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
They won their last six game against five ranked teams,
all of them are tournament teams. They won those games
by fifteen point fifteen point per game average.
Speaker 5 (08:28):
I mean, they're twenty six and eight against the spread
this season. They're just loaded.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
They're red hot.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
But again, it's March madness, so I want to be
a bit shocked if they know me out of the weekend.
But they're the most popular picks, so whatever, I'm taking
Ryan with the public on that one.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
All right, I got Duke winning it all. By the way,
I think Cooper Flag's gonna be just fine. They got
enough talent on that Duke team. They were really good
in acc play and non conference play. I know it's
not an underdog. It's a trendy pick with the Dukies,
but I'm gonna go with the Duke Blue Devils to
win it all in San Antonio. Dave really appreciate the time.
