Okay? Uh So for people just joining us, I'm Doug
Gottliebin for Colin, many of you have throughout my travels
now as both the hosts of Doug Gottlieb Show and
the head coach of Green Bay have like, Man, I
love you when you're on Colin, like I'm still on
Colin and just we just do it remotely now, so
I appreciate you. And obviously Colin is gonna spend at

least some time closer to us in Green Bay Chicago.
I don't know how much that that's gonna be or
how that any of that works. That's not my business.
But Yeah, over the weekend, we broke out of our
despite the fact we you know, didn't have still don't
have the nation's leading scorers out with injury or our

starting center who came over eight year, we pulled off
an upset, got a big win on Sunday. For the
first time since twenty twenty one, we won a game
in our on campus facility called the Crest Center. Those
first time since twenty twenty one we'd won on campus
and for my team, we lost twenty one in a row.

Twenty one in a row. Kids battled and beat a
good Right State team and ended up getting win. So
you know, it's like unbelievably positive vibes and these and
I can you know, everybody calls their college team kids,
but when you're playing, you know, six of your rotation
or your you know, start five fresh four freshmen and

a sophomore who's nineteen years old. You know you're sitting
there going, hey, they're actually kids. Everybody calls their team
in college kids, and as the sport has gotten older,
my guys are actually kids. So for these kids, they
just kind of taken a beating a little bit, you know,
emotionally themselves. They're competitive people. And then I don't think
(03:26):
they and probably I didn't even understand how people would
choose to follow our story this year, you know, just
looking at final scores, not caring about anything else, and
when the losing streak built up, you know, people beat
up on us on on social media. There's plenty of
other teams that are struggling this year. Apparently the only
(03:47):
one they care about is mine, which is fine. That's
that's how it's gonna be and it's gonna be that
way when we win. So it's okay. But the point
is that I don't know if anyone, especially those players,
expected what what kind of happened. So we get to win.
(04:09):
On Sundays two o'clock game, you know, about four thirty
five o'clock, I'm over the place called the Black Sheep,
which is on this side of town. It's the only
real spot where you can go have a have a
beverage and it's great. And then that night we go
out and have dinner and the guys are good, and
the guys have we have to mandatory expandatory for our
program to take two days off. We chose to give

them two consecutive days off, and me and a couple
of staff guys, we went and recruited on Monday. So
I'm flying and I made it. I made it a
point to myself Chase two. As you know, I am
on my phone too much. And this job is terrible
for it terrible for it because you know, like when

you're recruiting, you have to constantly check in with players
and coaches with your team, you kind of have to
constantly check in with your players and coaches and with
that you're going to be on your phone. But I
was like, you know what, we got to win. It
feels good. I don't need social media today. I don't
need day to day. I'm just gonna fly and land
(05:18):
and be and watch tape and figure out recruiting, figure
out my current staff, my current roster, all these things.
I land and I hadn't. It's like first time because
I normally fly American and I was flying Delta and
I'm like, you know, I have an account with American
(05:39):
to have that, to have the Wi Fi, you know
where you're paying a monthly. I didn't have it with Delta.
I didn't even look at it. I just I'm just
watching tape mine in my own business. And all of
a sudden I land and one of my buddies calls
me says, what would you do? Lebron? I was like,
I don't even know what you're talking about. Did you
see Twitter? It's like, I'm not on Twitter today. He's like,

Bron's coming at you, okay over what He's like, I
don't know. So the context of the tweet was clearly
making fun of our record, which the tweet was old.
We'd actually it's like, oh, my guys, my players text
me like, hey, coach, can you tell Lebron we won
(06:23):
three games? Not too like We're not We're not like that.
And uh and then you know he went he went
to thirty year old credit card with the gotta give
him credit deal to be clever. So I think again,
I don't know, cause I don't know what Lebron James
would be doing on the day before he had to
(06:45):
get back to work with his ankle injury. But my
guess is either I live in his head, rent and free,
which is a possibility, or it popped up in his
you know, it can pop up in your like timeline record,
and he just chose to fire off it, you know,
catch me astray. But for whatever reason, he chose to

do it. And of course there is speculation from the
masses that it's over the fact that I have questioned
Brownie James's validity as a McDonald's All American when Jonathan
Gavoni branked him as the tenth best NBA prospect in
college in basketball last year. Even his selection at fifty
(07:33):
five in the NBA Draft or their use of him
early on the season, He's still on the Lakers roster
I guess, but I don't know, Jase do That's again,
we're just guessing because it wasn't like and it wouldn't
be that hard finding a take that a lot of
people had, but finding a take that he didn't like

of mine and then quote tweeting it and if he
wants to then make fun of our record, I guess
that it's good. So am I assuming the wrong thing
to assume? Maybe it's over Bronnie. Maybe it's or he
listens to the show, he didn't like some of my
football picks. What do we think it's over?

It's been It's been fascinating sport to theorize on this one,
because yeah, he hasn't had any follow up. Nobody asked him.
And if you know, somebody like Dan Wookie's listening right now,
maybe somebody should ask him about the Gottlieb tweet at
the next game, because we do need clarification the theories
that I've heard around the office here. Okay, you were

you were one of multiple people to make a comparison
of Bronni with make a wish. Okay, that exaggeration that
probably hit his radar. But I think the one take
that you had over the summer when you said that
you weren't sure that Bronnie would start for your team. So,
in other words, you have a Division I head coach
(08:54):
saying in the Horizon League saying that I'm not sure
Bronnie would start for my team. Now, I remember you
saying that, and you were being genuine. You were not
saying that to exaggerate. That was not a hot take.
That is basically how you felt about Brownie's skill set
at that time. I think earlier this week you said
you know what he would break the starting line.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
Of but he was part of it, is okay, So
again what kind of brass tacks but people don't know?
And it's great this Actually, Anthony Roy is our best player.
Antheon Roy was averaging twenty seven a game before he
suffered a lower leg injury that he is working to
come back from, and I don't know if he'll be
back for our regular season. It's gonna be real close. Okay.

Ante Roy is better and I would rather start him
than Bronnie James. No one in my program, no one
in basketball would argue with that. He just would. He's
a walking bucket. He was leading the country in three
point percentage and an effective field goal percentage while averaging
twenty seven a game. Again, it's not just about points
(10:01):
or whatever, but the dude is ridiculous. He's also older
than Bronnie. He's twenty three years old, turned twenty three
mid season, so he's older than Bronnie. So if you
want to say, if you think Bronnie has a better upside,
again you can think that. I don't believe so, so
he would not start. There my other two starting guards
(10:22):
at the time this summer, I have kidnamed Preston Rudinger
who is in his fourth year playing. He started out
as a walk on at Valpo, then earned a scholarship
at Valpo, then transferred to Green Bay Case just a
hard playing six to two kid from Appleton was from Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
(10:43):
And then I had Jeremiah Johnson, who was a top
one hundred, top hundred and fifty kid. And I think
he actually compares very favorably to Bronnie. And here's the thing, Okay,
if we're actually going to have a real basketball conversation,
here's the real basketball conversation. Because though I don't have
time to track every G League performance, I do have
people in my life that I'm very close to who
(11:06):
have do and continue to either coach or evaluate the
G League. And he had, you know, one of his
games in which he had a bunch of points, he
wasn't actually very good, you know, he was like six
of nineteen or whatever, and they went from a close
game to getting blown out. And then he had another,
(11:26):
yet another big game where he played really, really well.
He's been up and down in the G League. He's
been completely ineffective, and he's not good enough to play
in the NBA, and no one really argues with that.
They don't. Can he start on my team? Yeah? Probably.
My issue with Brownie has always been, like, he's not
(11:47):
a point guard. He's not an elite shooter. There's no
tracking for any time in his career, high school, college,
professionally that he is an elite shooter. Ever, he's not
an elite passer, and though he can be, he has
some of the skill set of being a good defender.
(12:07):
Like the issue that most people myself who actually evaluate
basketball is, especially during summer league, he wouldn't guard the
big time point guard, the legit dude. You know, he'd
go over and kind of hide and guard a shooter.
So you know, I think he's I thought he'd actually
(12:28):
have a very good college career. My suggestion of the
time and would have remained, why not go play for
one of your best friends at Ducane, get away from
it and just really really develop the confidence of being
a scoring combo, because that's his path to success. But yeah,
like and and my staff when I said that, they're like,
(12:50):
I think he'd start, Like, I don't know that. I
don't know what he looks like because when I saw
him play in college at USC and less, Andy Enfeld's
a complete dope, which I don't think anybody thinks and
the NFL's equiped complete dope. He didn't start him because
he was behind guards that were better than him. And
when he did play, regardless of his stats, they didn't win.
(13:13):
They weren't more competitive. They were one of the worst
teams in the Pac twelve last year. That wasn't a
super strong basketball conference. Now it's a higher level on
the horizon. But like, we got good guards in this league,
really really good guards. This kid named Bellow at Purdue
Fort Wayne. He was a Division two kid who transferred
(13:34):
in there. He's tough, he's tough. I would rather have
him than have Ronnie. And then the other part too,
it is the reality when you're a coach, you're not
gonna sit there and throw your own guys on the bus, like, oh,
he's better than everybody in my roster. He's not so.
But again, if it's about that, why not make it
about that instead of just the stray Let's make fun

of their record with non text leave you to wonder
and why. And the other part is why, Like what
is the win in it for Lebron? Now I know
you got what do they call what do we call
people who are like lebron sycophants on social media?

Just that like the fanboys who bronze sexuals, that's what
they are, Bronze sexuals. My my, my instagram is full

creepy to the level of when women and guys used

Just remember when Michael Jackson would like travel to Japan
and like in his motorcade, people would see him and
they just start crying and you're like, what is wrong
with those people? Why are you crying at the sight
of Michael Jackson? Jay Stu your wed to say, mate,
what about saying as you're a little older, right? Do
you remember those those videos of like Michael Jackson goes

to a foreign country and people actually start crying.

I view I think most people view. What is it again,

It's funny that you bring in bronze sexuals if you
were hearing from them, because if you read the comments
of that tweet, and I encourage our listeners to go
to the tweet, it's still up. Most of the comments
and I would say a ratio of like nine to
one are ripping on Lebron for wasting time tweeting about
you after he just cost somebody an All Star spot

the day before. And the theory that has been going
around the office too, and our guy Dan Byer came
up with it, and I think he's right. Lebron was
just on his private jet on the way home. Yeah,
and you have on Twitter, you have for you, and
you have following. He was on his for you, and
this tweet just comes up from college basketball news or
whatever it is with your record, and it's I think

he just did an impulse tweet. Yeah, and there are
twenty three laughing emojis and five Coca emojis, just to
be precise, do you a Coca? Yeah? I went Coca
instead of Herd for the for the Herd audience.

You could have gone number two as well, or or
or pooh could then pooh? Do we do Do we
say the word pooh anymore? We just say pooh. When
you're kids, you go pooh.

that could hurt the numbers. Let's not do that. I

would get I would guess that that was a a
league mandated thing more than anything else, because there's there
been lots of speculation about, hey, why didn't you just like,
why didn't they grab LaMelo ball and throw them in
that game? LaMelo would have loved to have been an
All Star. My guess is that they wanted Lebron to
go through all the pomp, all the circumstances, pretend like
he was playing be there, because had he not been

in the game, Lebron probably been like, I'm out, I'm
taking my private jet and I'm going somewhere nice, Like, yeah,
we can't do that, which kind of circles us back
to who's the next day to the leak. But I
find the whole thing to be just fascinating. That's that
somebody who like why does he care? But apparently cares

cares enough. He cares enough. But people have asked. I've
had lots of people going like, you're and again, this
is more bronze sexuals. You could take the heat. You
can't dish it out, Like what do you want me
to dish out? Do you want me to specifically react
to a tweet that has no nothing other than like

our record is what it is, like I can't change it,
and I don't feel the need to go back and
go like, well, you know I didn't have this guy then.
I didn't have this then, and we played a top
one hundred schedule and we're a you know, a bottom
two fifty team. Like that was dumb and like nobody cares.
I don't care. They don't care about anything other than

either being the most vile people ever or being supportive.
There's nothing. There's no one between, there no gray. So like,
what do you want me to come back as ooh,
you missed the last two game winning shots? Like he's
Lebron James. Okay, that was There was no substance to
his tweet other than willfully at showing the desire to

make fun of a team that he's never watched, he's
never paid attention to. And that's funny. I don't know,
good for him. That's small guy stuff. That's small guy stuff. Oh,

any of that means. It's basically like a blood clot
in the shoulder. They believe it's an isolated incident. Why
is it important it's isolated. If you have blood clots,
then it's very hard to ever play the NBA because

there's all these steps you got to go through, and

then if you come off it, then you can get clots. Obviously,
we know, you know blood clotting. You know those things
can can break loose and can wreck havoc on your
entire body. So right now that is the breaking news.
What does it mean and how do we how as
the league reacting to another rating slip, in another incarnation

of the All Star Game? And and what do we
make of Luca and Lebron now that we saw them
last night fall to the Charlotte Hornets. For that, I

How fearful are the Spurs that there's something bigger than
just this one off?
Speaker 5 (21:06):
Like, well, the Spurs are certainly concerned enough to shut
him down for the rest of the season, but they're
encouraged enough that they expect him to make a full
recovery before next season. So I think the way the
Spurs look at it is they must dodged a bullet here.
You know, blood clots are something you never take lightly.
He may recall Doug Chris Bosh had to end his
(21:27):
career early and retire because he had multiple blood clots.
But here is the key distinction. Victor Wabinama has a
single blood clot in his shoulder. It's not spread anywhere
else out his body, but obviously the Spurs want to
take precautionary measures, not just because of what he obviously
means to this franchise, but for his long term health.
Speaker 3 (21:47):
Okay, NBA All Star Game, they tried something different, doesn't
seem to have worked. Still catching criticism and the ratings
drop lower yet again. What's the league's future plans looking
like for the All Star Game?
Speaker 5 (22:04):
Well, for better and mostly for worse. I think All
Star plans are always fluid. You know, it's not going
to go away because it is still a moneymaker, even
if it's felt like this corporate, you know, convention trade show.
But they have to find a better solution because we've
seen time and time again they add a new format,
(22:25):
it just creates new problems. And what this the new
problems were this year is that you had a little
bit better intensity because of the pride factor and you're
playing to a score, but it was interrupted with even
more commercial time and that long presentation for the inside
the NBA guys in the finals game. So if I
had a guess moving forward next year, add into a
(22:47):
dome in LA. They go back to East West format,
and it's about, Look, we're not going to do any
more gimmicks. Just try hard and act like you know
you can give it, you know what, just to put
on an entertaining show. No game seven intensity. It's not
a playoff matchup. Everyone should be healthy, but at least
put on an entertaining show for the fans. But you know, Doug,

you and I have talked a lot about All Star weekend.
It seems unsolvable, So I have skepticism on any solution.
But that's my guess on what will happen next year.

Last night, Lakers have a big lead and lose. LaMelo goes,
you know, right around the traffic cone that is Luca
towards at the end of the game, and Lebron misses

two game tying three point shots. It look, it's just
one game. It's a it's a game in which they
they missed, they had to make. It's a makeup game.
But you got any takeaways from watching those two play together?
Speaker 5 (23:56):
Yeah, there's a lot of takeaways, the extending way and circums. Yes,
you understand. You mentioned the makeup game post All Star breaks.
Sometimes that first game is really sluggish. Luka Doncic, he's
played only three games with them, not only just with
the Lakers, but since Christmas with his injury. But what
this means big picture, I don't have concerns about Luca's
(24:18):
conditioning or his injury that's going to round in the form.
I feel like his intentions were good. He was competing,
even though his passes were way off and the shots
were way off. He was still trying to make the
right play, but he was trying too hard. Now, I
think what is going to be interesting moving forward is
how did they decide and crunch time, what is the
(24:41):
best play Lebron James or Luka Doncic. In yesterday's game,
the answer was fairly obvious. He'd go with Lebron because
he was shooting the ball a lot better. But I
think all things being equal, you know, theoretically, Lucas should
be the guy taking a shot because that's just how
he's geared and Lebron's you know, for all his greatness,
he is great at making the past, So that's what
(25:02):
I'm gonna be curious about looking forward. And then the
other thing is just defensively, what do they do? They
can't defend anyone. You mentioned LaMelo ball getting the best
of Luca doncis. There's a reason after that play that
Luca was held out, you know, on final possessions for
defensive purposes. So they have a lot of questions on
(25:23):
what they can do in the backcourt on defense as
well as in the front court because outside of Jackson Hay,
they don't really have much size.
Speaker 3 (25:30):
Okay, Kevin Durant said came out and said, Hey, the
reason I didn't want to be traded Golden State? Was
it anything negati about Golden State? I just want to
see this thing through with with my team. But at
least the speculation this is probably the last run with Phoenix.
What do people think about now that the thing has
been reshuffled? Are who's the favorite? I mean, like Oklahoma
(25:55):
City looks like they should be the favorite, but they
did nothing in the playoffs last year. Dallas looks like
they should be dynamic defensively, but they're not healthy and
they don't have Luca, and we don't really know right
the Lakers don't look like they can guard anybody. Golden
State looks better, but how much better? Like It's really
hard to figure out what do people in the league
think of the West Now.
Speaker 5 (26:13):
Yeah, I think the feeling is the Thunder is still
the favor, but not the predominant favor. And you still
have to consider the Memphis Grizzlies. They've been playing at
a really high level even with John Moran having some
overlapping injuries, because Sharon Jackson Junior has been a really
great defensive player has increased his versatility offensively. The Nuggets,
they were a hot mess at the beginning of the
(26:34):
season and they still have some structural issues as far
as lack of depth, and you know on questions about
Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon's shore ability. But they have
this guy in Nikoleyjokic who is still in the MVP
running because he has been able to keep that team afloat.
But I still give the edge of the Thunder. I'm
with you, Doug. I understand the inexperience, but I think
(26:56):
Shay's taking this game to another level this year where
he's not just the isolation score. He's good at getting
other guys involved. They have so many wing defenders, Alex Caruso,
Jalen Williams, Lou Dort. You think about what that means
in a playoff series. They're not going to shut down
top scores, but they can just throw multiple bodies at them.
And Chet Holmgren's not even back yet. So I don't
(27:19):
think it's inevitable they get to the NBA Finals, but
if I had to make a prediction, it is and
then out East. I think it's really between Boston Cleveland.
I think it's a seven game series. Each team has
its own case, with Boston's championship experience, most of their
team intact, and Cleveland just really taking their chemistry to
(27:40):
another level this season. I mean, Doug, you and I
believe talked about that fit last year with Donovan Mitchell,
Darius Garland, Jared Allen, Evan Mobley. We've seen that both
of those players in the back in front court can
go exist and complement each other really well. And that's
a testament to those guys as well as just how
Kenny Atkinson's managed the offense.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
Okay, let let's get let's get to the East. Obviously,
people know and respect Boston Yeah, Cleveland's lurking out there.
They didn't do anything to tinker with their roster. Think
it feeling like, hey, we're good enough? Are they?
Speaker 5 (28:19):
They are? But I think that they're mindful and we
should be mindful that regular season dominance doesn't always translate
into the playoffs. I mean, you can think of the
Houston Rockets in twenty eighteen, the Phoenix Suns a few
years ago. They had deep playoffs success, but you also
did wonder did some of that intensity catch up to
(28:40):
them in the playoffs and you know, allow FATI to
catch up to them. I think that they have such
a complete team that they'll be okay. It's just that
Boston's really, really good, and a lot of their shortcomings
just has to do with the fact that they're nursing
the hangover that a lot of championship teams have. They're
going through those walls. I don't see anything fundamentally wrong
(29:02):
with the team. I know a lot is made about
how they're jacking fifty three is the game, and there's
always questions about Porzingis's durability, But I don't think that
those two areas are going to make or break their championship.
For Fortunes. It starts with Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown,
and I think for the most part they've been basically
carrying the same kind of production they did last season.
Speaker 3 (29:25):
They take on Philadelphia tonight. Lakers travel to Portland tonight.
Game one for everybody else not named the Lakers and
the Hornets, although the Hornets are are back in action

if I was to say to you five years ago
that the quarterback of one of the most successful football
programs in the country would opt out and leave that

then he would have his Mercedes and Lamborghini stolen from
his home, what would you have said five years ago?

When we lost our nineteenth in row, I texted Bill's
stuff because Bill's first year at Oral Roberts. They lost
eighteen round. It was like, I got you beat and
he sent me a nice text. I won't share. It's,
you know, but for the most part it's the same
sort of message, and it's that's the thing I take

most pride in. You know, there's some there's a couple
of more articles. Obviously, the athletic article came out last week.
I don't know the week before. I don't remember what
it came out. There's been other people following us around.
And you know, even though we want to we won
a game before, we would want to gain if you
came to our practices, it was not like a funeral procession.

It just wasn't. It doesn't mean every day was super fun,
and you know, we're doing circus tricks, but the guys
just have a great spirit about that, and that spirit
is kind of reinvigorated by winning a game. So look,
I understand that you're here. Here's the reality to it.
This is actually how I feel about Lebron. You know

Lebron a long time ago. We talk about people on
social media and maybe people in the media, you know,
picking apart things he's done or hasn't done well, or
whatever shots he's missed. And I think the point he
made was it's about like, obviously there's something going on
in your life that that you want to lash out
at mine, right, and so it's pretty obvious, like if
you want to have fun at my expense or taking

over a team and at this level of college basketball
where it's it's not easy. And I had five kids
remaining from last year's roster and we had to rebuild
it and we lost our best player to injury. Like
it's okay, I know I was gonna I'm gonna learn
a lot. But the difference in the people that are

in it for the right reasons and for the long
haul are the are what Kelvin said, what what Bill
self said to me. The real of it is lots
of people have been through it, and it's how you
choose to work out of it. Thanks she's worked out

crazy because I mean, like even mill SEL's team and
at Kansas struggled the Big Twelve, like college basketball so competitive.
Watched Missouri last night beat Alabama. They didn't win a

You watch the MLB Network as we're getting ready for

the Major League season. On the defending champ La Dodgers
spending a bunch of money, Like, what didn't they spend
a bunch of money last offseason and then this offseason
they spent even more. Here's here's Rob Manfred's at a
spring training event when he was asked about the spending
by the Dodgers over the past two seasons.

The Dodgers have gone out and done everything possible, always
within the rules that currently exist, to put the best
possible team on the field. And I think that's a
great thing for the game. That type of competitive spirit
is what people want to see. I said this at
the owner's meetings. I'll say it again. It's clear that

we have fans in some markets that are concerned about
the ability of the team, in their minds market to
compete with the financial resources of the Dodgers. And I
think if we've been consistent on one point, it is
we try to listen to our fans on topics like this,
and I have heard people on this, believe me.

Yeah. So look, I look at the Dodgers like I
look at Netflix, and the big story in the sports
world in the past day and a half is Netflix
is trying to get in on NFL Sunday Sunday NFL
broadcast rights, right, and you're like, how are the two comparable? Well,
Netflix is making a killing, right, making a killing. And

they've they've they've dove head deep into live sporting events
with the Paull fight versus uh what versus Mike Tyson, right,
and obviously that along with the NFL games is the
Christmas Day games. They've worked And this was the same
(40:01):
company that started out. First time you heard of Netflix
was probably, hey, do I pay for one DVD at once?
Or do I get three and have to put them
back in those little paper packages. Then they expanded and
they became a streaming giant, and now they're worth more
than Disney, Like that's crazy crazy. But instead of sitting
(40:25):
on their laurels and say this is what we got this,
who are keep developing shows, keep pushing forward, which they're
doing now they're expanding the Dodgers like, look the show
hey contract which essentially everything is deferred freeze up a
bunch of money. Well, if you freed up a bunch
of money and you're making a bunch of money, you
(40:48):
might as well go spend it and keep getting better.
It's not like the Dodgers have won the last ten
World Series and outspent all their opponents, and it's getting
lame already. Right up until last year, they'd only won
the COVID Your World Series since nineteen eighty eight, so
they got every right to keep going after it. They
don't violate any of the collective Bartyon Agreement laws like
(41:10):
there's you're just you're complaining more about your team and
your lack of a plan. And oh yeah, by the way,
creating a behemoth, creating a super team I think is
good for the league. It is gives you somebody root for,
gives you somebody root against. And the league's not dumb,
(41:33):
right their numbers and the Red Sox, you know they
have a very good farm system. I don't. I mean,
this is not the Red Sox year. But Yankees, Dodgers,
Red Sox. They get the Cubs going again. You know,
they need somebody else out West, be it the Giants
or something. The fact is that the when baseball was
(41:54):
at its peak in ratings during my professional lifetime. Okay,
so I've been doing this since two thousand and three,
nationally was right when I started, right, And I believe
that one of the reasons they expanded the playoffs was
that they would always have the Yankees and the Red
Sox Yankees or now the Yankees and the Red Sox
in the playoffs. Those drove the ratings bus the Dodgers
(42:17):
drive the International and West Coast raidings, So why wouldn't
you celebrated And oh yeah, by the way, you don't
necessarily need to spend all that money on a yearly
basis to win, as we've seen from other teams. But
complaining about the expansion of a team that's killing it
(42:38):
and doing well is complaining about Netflix trying to do
new things. Anybody who runs a business does keep going,
keep pushing, keep diversifying. If you don't, if you don't involve,
everybody else will, and everybody else will catch up to you,

Okay? Uh So for people just joining us, I'm Doug
Gottliebin for Colin, many of you have throughout my travels
now as both the hosts of Doug Gottlieb Show and
the head coach of Green Bay have like, Man, I
love you when you're on Colin, like I'm still on
Colin and just we just do it remotely now, so
I appreciate you. And obviously Colin is gonna spend at

least some time closer to us in Green Bay Chicago.
I don't know how much that that's gonna be or
how that any of that works. That's not my business.
But Yeah, over the weekend, we broke out of our
despite the fact we you know, didn't have still don't
have the nation's leading scorers out with injury or our
(02:16):
starting center who came over eight year, we pulled off
an upset, got a big win on Sunday. For the
first time since twenty twenty one, we won a game
in our on campus facility called the Crest Center. Those
first time since twenty twenty one we'd won on campus
and for my team, we lost twenty one in a row.
(02:40):
Twenty one in a row. Kids battled and beat a
good Right State team and ended up getting win. So
you know, it's like unbelievably positive vibes and these and
I can you know, everybody calls their college team kids,
but when you're playing, you know, six of your rotation
or your you know, start five fresh four freshmen and
(03:02):
a sophomore who's nineteen years old. You know you're sitting
there going, hey, they're actually kids. Everybody calls their team
in college kids, and as the sport has gotten older,
my guys are actually kids. So for these kids, they
just kind of taken a beating a little bit, you know,
emotionally themselves. They're competitive people. And then I don't think
(03:26):
they and probably I didn't even understand how people would
choose to follow our story this year, you know, just
looking at final scores, not caring about anything else, and
when the losing streak built up, you know, people beat
up on us on on social media. There's plenty of
other teams that are struggling this year. Apparently the only
(03:47):
one they care about is mine, which is fine. That's
that's how it's gonna be and it's gonna be that
way when we win. So it's okay. But the point
is that I don't know if anyone, especially those players,
expected what what kind of happened. So we get to win.
(04:09):
On Sundays two o'clock game, you know, about four thirty
five o'clock, I'm over the place called the Black Sheep,
which is on this side of town. It's the only
real spot where you can go have a have a
beverage and it's great. And then that night we go
out and have dinner and the guys are good, and
the guys have we have to mandatory expandatory for our
program to take two days off. We chose to give
(04:31):
them two consecutive days off, and me and a couple
of staff guys, we went and recruited on Monday. So
I'm flying and I made it. I made it a
point to myself Chase two. As you know, I am
on my phone too much. And this job is terrible
for it terrible for it because you know, like when
(04:55):
you're recruiting, you have to constantly check in with players
and coaches with your team, you kind of have to
constantly check in with your players and coaches and with
that you're going to be on your phone. But I
was like, you know what, we got to win. It
feels good. I don't need social media today. I don't
need day to day. I'm just gonna fly and land
(05:18):
and be and watch tape and figure out recruiting, figure
out my current staff, my current roster, all these things.
I land and I hadn't. It's like first time because
I normally fly American and I was flying Delta and
I'm like, you know, I have an account with American
(05:39):
to have that, to have the Wi Fi, you know
where you're paying a monthly. I didn't have it with Delta.
I didn't even look at it. I just I'm just
watching tape mine in my own business. And all of
a sudden I land and one of my buddies calls
me says, what would you do? Lebron? I was like,
I don't even know what you're talking about. Did you
see Twitter? It's like, I'm not on Twitter today. He's like,

Bron's coming at you, okay over what He's like, I
don't know. So the context of the tweet was clearly
making fun of our record, which the tweet was old.
We'd actually it's like, oh, my guys, my players text
me like, hey, coach, can you tell Lebron we won
(06:23):
three games? Not too like We're not We're not like that.
And uh and then you know he went he went
to thirty year old credit card with the gotta give
him credit deal to be clever. So I think again,
I don't know, cause I don't know what Lebron James
would be doing on the day before he had to
(06:45):
get back to work with his ankle injury. But my
guess is either I live in his head, rent and free,
which is a possibility, or it popped up in his
you know, it can pop up in your like timeline record,
and he just chose to fire off it, you know,
catch me astray. But for whatever reason, he chose to
(07:09):
do it. And of course there is speculation from the
masses that it's over the fact that I have questioned
Brownie James's validity as a McDonald's All American when Jonathan
Gavoni branked him as the tenth best NBA prospect in
college in basketball last year. Even his selection at fifty
(07:33):
five in the NBA Draft or their use of him
early on the season, He's still on the Lakers roster
I guess, but I don't know, Jase do That's again,
we're just guessing because it wasn't like and it wouldn't
be that hard finding a take that a lot of
people had, but finding a take that he didn't like

of mine and then quote tweeting it and if he
wants to then make fun of our record, I guess
that it's good. So am I assuming the wrong thing
to assume? Maybe it's over Bronnie. Maybe it's or he
listens to the show, he didn't like some of my
football picks. What do we think it's over?

It's been It's been fascinating sport to theorize on this one,
because yeah, he hasn't had any follow up. Nobody asked him.
And if you know, somebody like Dan Wookie's listening right now,
maybe somebody should ask him about the Gottlieb tweet at
the next game, because we do need clarification the theories
that I've heard around the office here. Okay, you were

you were one of multiple people to make a comparison
of Bronni with make a wish. Okay, that exaggeration that
probably hit his radar. But I think the one take
that you had over the summer when you said that
you weren't sure that Bronnie would start for your team. So,
in other words, you have a Division I head coach
(08:54):
saying in the Horizon League saying that I'm not sure
Bronnie would start for my team. Now, I remember you
saying that, and you were being genuine. You were not
saying that to exaggerate. That was not a hot take.
That is basically how you felt about Brownie's skill set
at that time. I think earlier this week you said
you know what he would break the starting line.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
Of but he was part of it, is okay, So
again what kind of brass tacks but people don't know?
And it's great this Actually, Anthony Roy is our best player.
Antheon Roy was averaging twenty seven a game before he
suffered a lower leg injury that he is working to
come back from, and I don't know if he'll be
back for our regular season. It's gonna be real close. Okay.
(09:37):
Ante Roy is better and I would rather start him
than Bronnie James. No one in my program, no one
in basketball would argue with that. He just would. He's
a walking bucket. He was leading the country in three
point percentage and an effective field goal percentage while averaging
twenty seven a game. Again, it's not just about points
(10:01):
or whatever, but the dude is ridiculous. He's also older
than Bronnie. He's twenty three years old, turned twenty three
mid season, so he's older than Bronnie. So if you
want to say, if you think Bronnie has a better upside,
again you can think that. I don't believe so, so
he would not start. There my other two starting guards
(10:22):
at the time this summer, I have kidnamed Preston Rudinger
who is in his fourth year playing. He started out
as a walk on at Valpo, then earned a scholarship
at Valpo, then transferred to Green Bay Case just a
hard playing six to two kid from Appleton was from Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
(10:43):
And then I had Jeremiah Johnson, who was a top
one hundred, top hundred and fifty kid. And I think
he actually compares very favorably to Bronnie. And here's the thing, Okay,
if we're actually going to have a real basketball conversation,
here's the real basketball conversation. Because though I don't have
time to track every G League performance, I do have
people in my life that I'm very close to who
(11:06):
have do and continue to either coach or evaluate the
G League. And he had, you know, one of his
games in which he had a bunch of points, he
wasn't actually very good, you know, he was like six
of nineteen or whatever, and they went from a close
game to getting blown out. And then he had another,
(11:26):
yet another big game where he played really, really well.
He's been up and down in the G League. He's
been completely ineffective, and he's not good enough to play
in the NBA, and no one really argues with that.
They don't. Can he start on my team? Yeah? Probably.
My issue with Brownie has always been, like, he's not
(11:47):
a point guard. He's not an elite shooter. There's no
tracking for any time in his career, high school, college,
professionally that he is an elite shooter. Ever, he's not
an elite passer, and though he can be, he has
some of the skill set of being a good defender.
(12:07):
Like the issue that most people myself who actually evaluate
basketball is, especially during summer league, he wouldn't guard the
big time point guard, the legit dude. You know, he'd
go over and kind of hide and guard a shooter.
So you know, I think he's I thought he'd actually
(12:28):
have a very good college career. My suggestion of the
time and would have remained, why not go play for
one of your best friends at Ducane, get away from
it and just really really develop the confidence of being
a scoring combo, because that's his path to success. But yeah,
like and and my staff when I said that, they're like,
(12:50):
I think he'd start, Like, I don't know that. I
don't know what he looks like because when I saw
him play in college at USC and less, Andy Enfeld's
a complete dope, which I don't think anybody thinks and
the NFL's equiped complete dope. He didn't start him because
he was behind guards that were better than him. And
when he did play, regardless of his stats, they didn't win.
(13:13):
They weren't more competitive. They were one of the worst
teams in the Pac twelve last year. That wasn't a
super strong basketball conference. Now it's a higher level on
the horizon. But like, we got good guards in this league,
really really good guards. This kid named Bellow at Purdue
Fort Wayne. He was a Division two kid who transferred
(13:34):
in there. He's tough, he's tough. I would rather have
him than have Ronnie. And then the other part too,
it is the reality when you're a coach, you're not
gonna sit there and throw your own guys on the bus, like, oh,
he's better than everybody in my roster. He's not so.
But again, if it's about that, why not make it
about that instead of just the stray Let's make fun

of their record with non text leave you to wonder
and why. And the other part is why, Like what
is the win in it for Lebron? Now I know
you got what do they call what do we call
people who are like lebron sycophants on social media?

Just that like the fanboys who bronze sexuals, that's what

they just start crying and you're like, what is wrong

and I would say a ratio of like nine to
one are ripping on Lebron for wasting time tweeting about
you after he just cost somebody an All Star spot

the day before. And the theory that has been going
around the office too, and our guy Dan Byer came
up with it, and I think he's right. Lebron was
just on his private jet on the way home. Yeah,
and you have on Twitter, you have for you, and
you have following. He was on his for you, and
this tweet just comes up from college basketball news or

had lots of people going like, you're and again, this

in the shoulder. They believe it's an isolated incident. Why
is it important it's isolated. If you have blood clots,

then if you come off it, then you can get clots. Obviously,
we know, you know blood clotting. You know those things
can can break loose and can wreck havoc on your

make of Luca and Lebron now that we saw them

How fearful are the Spurs that there's something bigger than
just this one off?

Like, well, the Spurs are certainly concerned enough to shut
him down for the rest of the season, but they're
encouraged enough that they expect him to make a full
recovery before next season. So I think the way the
Spurs look at it is they must dodged a bullet here.
You know, blood clots are something you never take lightly.
He may recall Doug Chris Bosh had to end his

career early and retire because he had multiple blood clots.
But here is the key distinction. Victor Wabinama has a
single blood clot in his shoulder. It's not spread anywhere
else out his body, but obviously the Spurs want to
take precautionary measures, not just because of what he obviously
means to this franchise, but for his long term health.

Okay, NBA All Star Game, they tried something different, doesn't
seem to have worked. Still catching criticism and the ratings
drop lower yet again. What's the league's future plans looking
like for the All Star Game?
Speaker 5 (22:04):
Well, for better and mostly for worse. I think All
Star plans are always fluid. You know, it's not going
to go away because it is still a moneymaker, even
if it's felt like this corporate, you know, convention trade show.
But they have to find a better solution because we've
seen time and time again they add a new format,
(22:25):
it just creates new problems. And what this the new
problems were this year is that you had a little
bit better intensity because of the pride factor and you're
playing to a score, but it was interrupted with even
more commercial time and that long presentation for the inside
the NBA guys in the finals game. So if I
had a guess moving forward next year, add into a
(22:47):
dome in LA. They go back to East West format,
and it's about, Look, we're not going to do any
more gimmicks. Just try hard and act like you know
you can give it, you know what, just to put
on an entertaining show. No game seven intensity. It's not
a playoff matchup. Everyone should be healthy, but at least
put on an entertaining show for the fans. But you know, Doug,

you and I have talked a lot about All Star weekend.
It seems unsolvable, So I have skepticism on any solution.
But that's my guess on what will happen next year.

Last night, Lakers have a big lead and lose. LaMelo goes,
you know, right around the traffic cone that is Luca
towards at the end of the game, and Lebron misses

two game tying three point shots. It look, it's just
one game. It's a it's a game in which they
they missed, they had to make. It's a makeup game.
But you got any takeaways from watching those two play together?
Speaker 5 (23:56):
Yeah, there's a lot of takeaways, the extending way and circums. Yes,
you understand. You mentioned the makeup game post All Star breaks.
Sometimes that first game is really sluggish. Luka Doncic, he's
played only three games with them, not only just with
the Lakers, but since Christmas with his injury. But what
this means big picture, I don't have concerns about Luca's
(24:18):
conditioning or his injury that's going to round in the form.
I feel like his intentions were good. He was competing,
even though his passes were way off and the shots
were way off. He was still trying to make the
right play, but he was trying too hard. Now, I
think what is going to be interesting moving forward is
how did they decide and crunch time, what is the
(24:41):
best play Lebron James or Luka Doncic. In yesterday's game,
the answer was fairly obvious. He'd go with Lebron because
he was shooting the ball a lot better. But I
think all things being equal, you know, theoretically, Lucas should
be the guy taking a shot because that's just how
he's geared and Lebron's you know, for all his greatness,
he is great at making the past, So that's what
(25:02):
I'm gonna be curious about looking forward. And then the
other thing is just defensively, what do they do? They
can't defend anyone. You mentioned LaMelo ball getting the best
of Luca doncis. There's a reason after that play that
Luca was held out, you know, on final possessions for
defensive purposes. So they have a lot of questions on
(25:23):
what they can do in the backcourt on defense as
well as in the front court because outside of Jackson Hay,
they don't really have much size.
Speaker 3 (25:30):
Okay, Kevin Durant said came out and said, Hey, the
reason I didn't want to be traded Golden State? Was
it anything negati about Golden State? I just want to
see this thing through with with my team. But at
least the speculation this is probably the last run with Phoenix.
What do people think about now that the thing has
been reshuffled? Are who's the favorite? I mean, like Oklahoma
(25:55):
City looks like they should be the favorite, but they
did nothing in the playoffs last year. Dallas looks like
they should be dynamic defensively, but they're not healthy and
they don't have Luca, and we don't really know right
the Lakers don't look like they can guard anybody. Golden
State looks better, but how much better? Like It's really
hard to figure out what do people in the league
think of the West Now.
Speaker 5 (26:13):
Yeah, I think the feeling is the Thunder is still
the favor, but not the predominant favor. And you still
have to consider the Memphis Grizzlies. They've been playing at
a really high level even with John Moran having some
overlapping injuries, because Sharon Jackson Junior has been a really
great defensive player has increased his versatility offensively. The Nuggets,
they were a hot mess at the beginning of the
(26:34):
season and they still have some structural issues as far
as lack of depth, and you know on questions about
Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon's shore ability. But they have
this guy in Nikoleyjokic who is still in the MVP
running because he has been able to keep that team afloat.
But I still give the edge of the Thunder. I'm
with you, Doug. I understand the inexperience, but I think
(26:56):
Shay's taking this game to another level this year where
he's not just the isolation score. He's good at getting
other guys involved. They have so many wing defenders, Alex Caruso,
Jalen Williams, Lou Dort. You think about what that means
in a playoff series. They're not going to shut down
top scores, but they can just throw multiple bodies at them.
And Chet Holmgren's not even back yet. So I don't
(27:19):
think it's inevitable they get to the NBA Finals, but
if I had to make a prediction, it is and
then out East. I think it's really between Boston Cleveland.
I think it's a seven game series. Each team has
its own case, with Boston's championship experience, most of their
team intact, and Cleveland just really taking their chemistry to
(27:40):
another level this season. I mean, Doug, you and I
believe talked about that fit last year with Donovan Mitchell,
Darius Garland, Jared Allen, Evan Mobley. We've seen that both
of those players in the back in front court can
go exist and complement each other really well. And that's
a testament to those guys as well as just how
Kenny Atkinson's managed the offense.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
Okay, let let's get let's get to the East. Obviously,
people know and respect Boston Yeah, Cleveland's lurking out there.
They didn't do anything to tinker with their roster. Think
it feeling like, hey, we're good enough? Are they?
Speaker 5 (28:19):
They are? But I think that they're mindful and we
should be mindful that regular season dominance doesn't always translate
into the playoffs. I mean, you can think of the
Houston Rockets in twenty eighteen, the Phoenix Suns a few
years ago. They had deep playoffs success, but you also
did wonder did some of that intensity catch up to
(28:40):
them in the playoffs and you know, allow FATI to
catch up to them. I think that they have such
a complete team that they'll be okay. It's just that
Boston's really, really good, and a lot of their shortcomings
just has to do with the fact that they're nursing
the hangover that a lot of championship teams have. They're
going through those walls. I don't see anything fundamentally wrong
(29:02):
with the team. I know a lot is made about
how they're jacking fifty three is the game, and there's
always questions about Porzingis's durability, But I don't think that
those two areas are going to make or break their championship.
For Fortunes. It starts with Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown,
and I think for the most part they've been basically
carrying the same kind of production they did last season.

They take on Philadelphia tonight. Lakers travel to Portland tonight.
Game one for everybody else not named the Lakers and
the Hornets, although the Hornets are are back in action

if I was to say to you five years ago
that the quarterback of one of the most successful football
programs in the country would opt out and leave that
program for the Miami Hurricanes and make upwards of philipore

million dollars and something called name, image and license, and
then he would have his Mercedes and Lamborghini stolen from
his home, what would you have said five years ago?

I would have said, that's the most of Miami story. Like,
I'm not sure that those the Miami guys didn't have
Lamborghinis back before it was legal. Right, Let's just let's
just be honest. Grant aid at Miami is a little
bit different than grant aid at some of the other
fine institutions in this country. Yeah, it's a weird sign
of times. I mean, look, there's there's all different all

different parts to it, like how the nil stuff works
with the cars. Who pays for the insurance? I don't know.
And you know his girlfriend is one of the Cavendar twins, right, yes,
I think I think one of the cars is hers.

just the idea of a stolen car is really if
you steal cars, But I guess it's Miami and a
stolen Lamborghini in Miami, right, doesn't stick out like a
stolen Lamborghini with in Athens, Georgia. Yeah, the point I

think with the Mercedes, there's a lot to that story.
Well what I have said, I would have said, that's
the most Miami story ever.

So you know more about this than I do. But
Bobby Hurley and the Sun Devils are struggling. Kelvin Sampson
is the head coach of Houston and Houston beat Arizona
State earlier this week, handing them their sixth straight loss
eleventh in their last thirteen.

When we lost our nineteenth in row, I texted Bill's
stuff because Bill's first year at Oral Roberts. They lost
eighteen round. It was like, I got you beat and
he sent me a nice text. I won't share. It's,
you know, but for the most part it's the same
sort of message, and it's that's the thing I take

most pride in. You know, there's some there's a couple
of more articles. Obviously, the athletic article came out last week.
I don't know the week before. I don't remember what
it came out. There's been other people following us around.
And you know, even though we want to we won
a game before, we would want to gain if you
came to our practices, it was not like a funeral procession.

It just wasn't. It doesn't mean every day was super fun,
and you know, we're doing circus tricks, but the guys
just have a great spirit about that, and that spirit
is kind of reinvigorated by winning a game. So look,
I understand that you're here. Here's the reality to it.
This is actually how I feel about Lebron. You know
(35:07):
Lebron a long time ago. We talk about people on
social media and maybe people in the media, you know,
picking apart things he's done or hasn't done well, or
whatever shots he's missed. And I think the point he
made was it's about like, obviously there's something going on
in your life that that you want to lash out
at mine, right, and so it's pretty obvious, like if
you want to have fun at my expense or taking
(35:29):
over a team and at this level of college basketball
where it's it's not easy. And I had five kids
remaining from last year's roster and we had to rebuild
it and we lost our best player to injury. Like
it's okay, I know I was gonna I'm gonna learn
a lot. But the difference in the people that are
(35:51):
in it for the right reasons and for the long
haul are the are what Kelvin said, what what Bill
self said to me. The real of it is lots
of people have been through it, and it's how you
choose to work out of it. Thanks she's worked out
but I do appreciate you playing that sound. And it's

crazy because I mean, like even mill SEL's team and
at Kansas struggled the Big Twelve, like college basketball so competitive.
Watched Missouri last night beat Alabama. They didn't win a
game in the SEC last year, you know, because you're
putting together teams in the fly and sometimes the chemistry
doesn't mix, and then you get injuries and then it
just snowballs on who happens? That's heard line news, Well

You watch the MLB Network as we're getting ready for

the Major League season. On the defending champ La Dodgers
spending a bunch of money, Like, what didn't they spend
a bunch of money last offseason and then this offseason
they spent even more. Here's here's Rob Manfred's at a
spring training event when he was asked about the spending
by the Dodgers over the past two seasons.

The Dodgers have gone out and done everything possible, always
within the rules that currently exist, to put the best
possible team on the field. And I think that's a
great thing for the game. That type of competitive spirit
is what people want to see. I said this at
the owner's meetings. I'll say it again. It's clear that
(38:54):
we have fans in some markets that are concerned about
the ability of the team, in their minds market to
compete with the financial resources of the Dodgers. And I
think if we've been consistent on one point, it is
we try to listen to our fans on topics like this,
and I have heard people on this, believe me.
Speaker 3 (39:16):
Yeah. So look, I look at the Dodgers like I
look at Netflix, and the big story in the sports
world in the past day and a half is Netflix
is trying to get in on NFL Sunday Sunday NFL
broadcast rights, right, and you're like, how are the two comparable? Well,
Netflix is making a killing, right, making a killing. And
(39:41):
they've they've they've dove head deep into live sporting events
with the Paull fight versus uh what versus Mike Tyson, right,
and obviously that along with the NFL games is the
Christmas Day games. They've worked And this was the same
(40:01):
company that started out. First time you heard of Netflix
was probably, hey, do I pay for one DVD at once?
Or do I get three and have to put them
back in those little paper packages. Then they expanded and
they became a streaming giant, and now they're worth more
than Disney, Like that's crazy crazy. But instead of sitting
(40:25):
on their laurels and say this is what we got this,
who are keep developing shows, keep pushing forward, which they're
doing now they're expanding the Dodgers like, look the show
hey contract which essentially everything is deferred freeze up a
bunch of money. Well, if you freed up a bunch
of money and you're making a bunch of money, you
(40:48):
might as well go spend it and keep getting better.
It's not like the Dodgers have won the last ten
World Series and outspent all their opponents, and it's getting
lame already. Right up until last year, they'd only won
the COVID Your World Series since nineteen eighty eight, so
they got every right to keep going after it. They
don't violate any of the collective Bartyon Agreement laws like
(41:10):
there's you're just you're complaining more about your team and
your lack of a plan. And oh yeah, by the way,
creating a behemoth, creating a super team I think is
good for the league. It is gives you somebody root for,
gives you somebody root against. And the league's not dumb,
(41:33):
right their numbers and the Red Sox, you know they
have a very good farm system. I don't. I mean,
this is not the Red Sox year. But Yankees, Dodgers,
Red Sox. They get the Cubs going again. You know,
they need somebody else out West, be it the Giants
or something. The fact is that the when baseball was
(41:54):
at its peak in ratings during my professional lifetime. Okay,
so I've been doing this since two thousand and three,
nationally was right when I started, right, And I believe
that one of the reasons they expanded the playoffs was
that they would always have the Yankees and the Red
Sox Yankees or now the Yankees and the Red Sox
in the playoffs. Those drove the ratings bus the Dodgers
(42:17):
drive the International and West Coast raidings, So why wouldn't
you celebrated And oh yeah, by the way, you don't
necessarily need to spend all that money on a yearly
basis to win, as we've seen from other teams. But
complaining about the expansion of a team that's killing it
(42:38):
and doing well is complaining about Netflix trying to do
new things. Anybody who runs a business does keep going,
keep pushing, keep diversifying. If you don't, if you don't involve,
everybody else will, and everybody else will catch up to you,
