Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to kat r h garden Line with Skip Ricord's.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Trim. You just watch him as.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Many birthdays to Septasya, Sorry Gas and.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
The sun beam of tweet. Well, good Sunday morning, Good
Sunday morning to all of you. Good to have you
with us this morning on garden Line. I'm your host,
Skip Rictor. We're here to help you have a bountiful garden,
a beautiful landscape, and more fun in the process. Don't
(00:58):
forget that third part that isn't Gardening is supposed to
be fun. Look, there was a day when people, if
they didn't grow food, they'd die, right, they'd starve to death.
We don't quite live in that spot anymore. We grow
vegetables for enjoyment and for health and for all kinds
of things like that. We grow flowers, beautiful flowers to
look at. Gardening. Gardening is now a hobby. Yeah, of course,
(01:21):
there's a lot of great things come from it. But
the pressure's off, guys. We can just enjoy growing things
and making our lives better in every single way, from
mental health to physical health, you name it, nutritional health.
Lots of good things to do with gardening, you know,
the simple, the simple facts of success with plants are
(01:45):
really simple, they really are. I mean, yeah, there are
eight hundred thousand different insects and diseases and weeds and
weather issues, and we've already had ours this year, already
a couple of twists of the weather. I'll talk about
those in a minute. But anyway, despite all those things,
it comes down to plants need sunlight, plants need moisture
but not soggy wet in most cases. And plants need
(02:08):
good nutrition. And good nutrition is all about the soil.
And the soil is where it all begins. It's a foundation.
You start there and you can end up with success.
You don't start with the soil, and it's a roll
of the dice and it's probably not going to come
out the way you want it. That's how that works. Now.
Nitroros put together a product many years ago called sweet Green.
Sweet Green is a molasses based product actually that through
(02:33):
microbial activity, gets in the soil, dissolves a way. Microbes
get a hold of it. They love the sugars, they
absolutely love those carbon chains. That's what they need. They
get a hold of that and they turn it loose
into the nutrient that especially the nitrogen that gets down
into the root system and causes your turf to take
off and thrive. Sweet grain. It smells good, it's easy
(02:56):
to apply. It just watered in with a little water,
dissolves a way and moves right into the soil where
it can do some good, not just for the microbial
life of the soil, but of course for your plants
as well. You can get sweet green like many nit products,
and lots of places you know plants and things out
in Brannam carries Microsoft products down a Fisher's hardware done
in Baytown Lake Hardware and Clute would be another example
(03:20):
of a place to get products from nitrofoss like the
sweet Green. And now's a good time to be doing
that to your lawns. Our lawns are growing now and
they can most benefit from fertilization. At this time. We've
had a little bit of a cool snap we just
went through, so the lawns kind of went on hold
just for a little bit because they're pretty much temperature related,
(03:41):
is what the growth is about on our lawns. But
now it's going to take off again. We're warming up again,
so now's the time to get the nutrients out there,
to get your lawn in its best shape. Remember that
we grow lawns because we want a pretty carpet out
there to walk on and to play on, and just
(04:01):
to look good out in the landscape. But in order
to have that carpet, it comes down to causing the
grass to grow densely. And the denser your turf is,
the less weeds you're going to have. Doesn't mean you'll
get rid of all weeds, but it means that a
lot of the weeds that are just plaguing year after
year after year they're there because sunlight is hitting the
(04:23):
soil because the turf is thin. So how do you
make your turf denser? You make it denser by mowing regularly.
Probably a turf specialist told me this once a couple
decades ago, and I had trouble believe in it. He said,
the single most important thing you do to your lawn
is mow it, and I thought, okay, come on, man,
that can't be the most important. And he's right, it is,
(04:46):
because mowing built gives density. The more you mowe, the
the more you're shearing that lawn off at the same
height on a very regular basis, not every three weeks
or two weeks, but regular and the more you mo
the denture gets. Of course, watering fertilizing is very important.
Those are the three components of my lawn care schedule online, which,
(05:07):
by the way, for those of you who haven't downloaded,
I still talk to a lot of people that you know,
they're familiar with the show, and I talk about the
schedule all the time, but they haven't downloaded it yet
or haven't even looked at it. So go look at it.
It's at gardening with Skip dot com and it tells
you about basic lawn care. There's another one talks about
the problems of lawns, but this one I'm talking about
(05:28):
is basic lawn care. So anyway, mo water, fertilized, it's
as simple as that adequate moisture. I was visiting with
Jason at Piercecapes last week and we were just talking
about some of the projects that they're doing, some of
the services that they offer and whatnot, just kind of
(05:48):
getting an update and seeing what's happening with them. The
here's reminding me that they do the quarterly maintenance projects
for people. That really is something you ought to sign
up for. And here's why you may have landscape beds,
and you know, you get busy and next thing you know,
they're not looking so good. The flowers really don't look great.
(06:11):
They're kind of playing out, or maybe there's some weeds
coming in or parts of it or not getting water dry,
someonent wrong with the irrigation system. With puercecapes, quarterly maintenance,
they come out every quarter and you know you can
set it up for them to do whatever you I mean,
they could do a color change every time they come out,
like four times a year. You get a brand new
set of annual color plants in to just keep it
(06:33):
looking good. Or you can do that a couple times
a year. You know, that's up to you guys. But
the bottom line is they'll do the color change, They
replenish the mult get it in top shape so it
can do what we want it to do. If the
irrigation has any problems, they check it and they can
fix it. Any kind of trimming you know they might
be needed. Just general care of those beds to keep
(06:54):
them looking their best. And with that quarterly you don't
have to worry about it. They just come by and
when it's time to do that, and your beds are
always looking in top shape. Now, pier Scapes, of course,
does way beyond that. I mean they do landscape designs.
They do landscape lighting and drainage and whatnot. If you
go to the website, it's Piercescapes dot com, p E
(07:14):
A r ce Piercescapes dot com or call them two
eight one three seven oh fifty sixty two eight one
three seven o five zero six zero. I suggest you
give them a call. It is it's really impressive the
kind of work that they can do. U. You are
(07:35):
listening to guarden Line this morning and we are a
call in show, So why don't I give you a
phone number? Seven one three two one two k t
r H. Seven one three two one two k t
r H. I'm going to take a little break and
I will be right back. Hey, welcome back.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
It's a pillar time.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
It pens so fast. Did to have you here with
us on guarden Line. Look forward to visiting with you
this morning. What kind of questions do you have? Seven
one three two one two k t r H. Had
a great time out at RCW Nurseries yesterday. It's always
fun to go out there. I mean the good night
the place just looked awesome. Roses. If you want to
(08:13):
pick out a rose, go out now and look at it,
because their roses are blooming. And you notice I have
to look at a picture on tag. I mean you
can see the rose, see what's gonna look like. And
I like that. The booga and Villea is unbelievable out there.
Oh my gosh, the boogom Villa trees are just stunning.
There's this color everywhere and trees and shrubs. People were
(08:35):
were really shopping. I did a little shopping myself for
trees and shrubs and things.
Speaker 5 (08:40):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
I've got a few things projects were working on. Maybe
I'll talk about those a little bit later in the show.
But it's quality stuff, you know, good help, quality knowledgeable people.
We had a good time and everybody that came out,
thank you for coming out. We had a nice visit,
gave ways some cool stuff, some of the three sixty
trees stabilizer stuff. We had some products from Nitroface. It
(09:01):
showed up and provided a really nice set a little
giveaways for folks that came by out there. But anyway,
thanks thanks to Rchiew. Appreciate you guys having us out.
It was a good time, good time to meet everybody.
I want to mention that this coming Saturday, I'm going
to be at Warren's Southern Gardens in Kingwood. Now this
(09:23):
one's a little bit later because it takes me a
little longer to get over there. Twelve thirty to two thirty.
Twelve thirty to two thirty Warren Southern Gardens. It's this Saturday,
April nineteenth. So everyone out that direction, you know, Kingwood
and Porter and Humble and be the regions beyond, come
on out and see us. If you're out in Hoffmann
(09:43):
or Crosby or anywhere, this's a good good chance to
come on over. Bring me some samples and bring me
some pictures. We'll work through that. We dug through some
weeds yesterday, people brought in in bags, looked at number
of different pictures on the phone, helping people solve problems
and turn their place into something a little bit nicer.
So hope you'll come out and join us and do
that now. Warren Southern Gardens and Kingwood Garden Center, both
(10:06):
they are places that are worth a drive to get
to you. I mean, I know everybody in Kingwood knows
about these great, great places for shopping. But if you
don't live out there, you ought to come out and
see it. In fact, could be a good, good excuse
to come out the Saturday while I'm out there, come
on out and take a look at the quality plants
that they have. The pottery they have is just absolutely gorgeous,
(10:31):
it really is. And the color and going through the place.
It's just follow them on social media. On there you
get to stay up with all the things that they're offering.
You know, right now, for example, from now through I
believe about April twentieth, you get fifteen percent off your
purchase of one hundred dollars or more out there at
(10:51):
the Warren's Southern Kingwood Garden Center. It's a really great deal.
They've got a nice selection of the lighter colored variegated
types of shrubs and things that are just so beautiful.
And you know, our landscapes are sea of green, and
so when you take shrubs that are that have a
(11:12):
like a yellow variegated foliage, you know something, Oh, I
don't know, let's see maybe one of my favorite lime
sissle or firebush, gorgeous sunshine lagustrum. You bring color in
when you go out to Orange or Kingwood and you
get some of their Laura peddlums. That's Chinese witch hazel,
deep deep burgundy colors. That's color in the landscape. So
(11:35):
even when there's not blooms, there's beautiful things to look at.
And of course they have lots and lots and lots
of blooms. So anyway, I hope you can make it
out there and visit us again. Warrens is on North
Park Drive, Kingwood is on Stone Hollow. They're both open
seven days a week. Let's go to talk to Ronnie
(11:56):
now out in Magnolia. Hey, Ronnie, welcome to garden.
Speaker 6 (11:59):
Line email and you'd recommend it I call, yet, I
don't have any pictures of these worms in my in
my turnip root uh uh baseball size and partly good
sized caterpillar looking.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
More okay, Uh, Ronnie, you mentioned I think also in
your email the turnips were splitting. Is that right? Yes? Yes,
The splitting is usually due to water moist or so
moisture fluctuations. Uh as as Uh. The way it kind
(12:35):
of happens is cells keep dividing in that turnip, and
this happens on tomatoes too. Sometimes the cells keep dividing
through a dry period, but they don't swell up, they
don't get their full size because they's not moisture to
fill them up. Think of them as a whole bunch
of little tiny balloons that are inside a you know,
a cellophane bag or something, and and then when you
(12:58):
get water, water moves in and all those cells fill up.
It's like the balloons start blowing up. And next thing
you know, that selifane the skin pops or breaks and
you get splits in the fruit. And that's how that happens.
So trying to keep your soul moisture, even if you can,
will help on that. There are some other, you know,
(13:19):
physiological factors that can cause it, but in general, it's
happening because of a fluctuation in moisture during the growing
of that of that turnip root. As far as that
the go ahead.
Speaker 6 (13:33):
Now, But what you're saying is is right on because
the worm entering hole is right very and the split.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Yeah yeah, So when it does split, that's a wound.
You know, it's just a fresh wound. Now, there are
not a lot of things that just chew into a
turnip and start eating on it. I think probably most
of your worm problems are going to be due to
that splitting. The only alternative to just, you know, try
to keep them from splitting and live with a little
(14:03):
bit of that would be to basically put a lot
of insecticide into the soil to kill anything crawling through there.
And I don't know. I generally stay away from just
nuking everything like that, but that is an option. That
is an option that that can be done. I don't
think the problem if you get that plant care turned
around a little bit, I don't think the problem is
(14:24):
going to be worth having to treat for.
Speaker 7 (14:27):
It's more consistent in my water.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Yeah, a little more consistent behind the water. You know,
as you do the fertilizing, don't over do the nitrogen,
just a moderate amount for the for the plants and
good sunlight. Turnips are not too difficult to grow if
you can give them those songs. Make sure they don't
get crowded.
Speaker 6 (14:48):
Okay, you have a nice dice.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Yeah, hey, thanks for calling. Good luck out there now.
You know, I always tell people that when I help you,
it doesn't cost anything, but I do expect half the produce.
I'm gonna let you off the hook, Ronnie. I don't
eat turnips, so you're not alone.
Speaker 7 (15:05):
I've got a for my neighborhood.
Speaker 6 (15:08):
I'm the garden guy out here to magnolia. I give them,
I tell you, come by all kinds of greens and all,
but they just walk past those turnips.
Speaker 2 (15:19):
When you go across. When when you go across the
yard with a box a bushel of turnips, the neighbors
shut the blinds and don't answer the door. Is that
what's happening? Thank you, Ronnie, I appreciate it. Take care, Yeah,
(15:39):
I have to. Yeah, I'm sorry. I do like to
eat vegetables. I know the good health of it. And
I ate almost any vegetable, just about any vegetable. There's
some that I don't care to eat. But then there's
a couple that I'm just not impressed with. And I'm
about to tell you one now, and a bunch of
you are gonna dine roll over in your grave. Cauliflower.
(15:59):
I am not a fan of cauliflower, and I just
am not. And to me, it tastes like water. I
don't know, it's just not a big deal. And I
know people love cauliflower, and I know cauliflower is something
you can use, you know, as they have thing called
riceed cauliflower, which is little granules, so you use it
like you would rice, maybe in a dish. I understand
(16:21):
all that. And every time i'd give a talk somewhere
and a vegetable talk, I always had to comment that
I don't like well cauliflower, and I always have people
that raise your hand or come up and go, well,
you just don't know how to make it. You saw
how to make it. You get you a Pyrex flat
baking dish and you let put a layer of cauliflower
in it, and then you get bacon bits and you
sprinkle them over the top, and then you get some
(16:44):
parmesan cheese and you sprinkle that over the top, and
then you put in and it's like all these layers
and excuse me me, I'm if I did that to cardboard,
it would taste good and be outible. It's not the
cauliflower you're eating. It's all the seasonings and things. Anyway,
all right, I'm not saying don't plant cauliflower. I'm just
being honest. I do not care for it that much.
(17:07):
Although I'll eat it. It's not offensive and it taste
to me. So they're the National Cauliflower Association is probably right.
Now getting their lawyer to draft a letter and send
it to me for the what do you call it
when you ruin someone character reputation? Anyway, in the soil,
(17:31):
nutrients are what drives plant health. Period Some nutrients make
the plants grow faster, like nitrogen. Some nutrients help the
plant to have better developed root system. That's one of
the rolls of phosphorus. Some plants help with cold heartiness
and water uptake. That's one of the rolls. Two of
the rolls of potassium. But then you have all these
(17:51):
micro nutrients like boron and sinc and manganese and iron
and things. They all have a place, and you need
to keep your soil bank account adequately filled with all
of the nutrients that a plant needs so that it
can make withdrawals day by day by day. And that's
why we put out asmite as a micro nutrients supplement.
Put it on lawns, put it on gardens. On a lawn,
(18:13):
a forty four pound bag covers about six to twelve
thousand square feet, so it goes a long way. In
a garden, ten pounds per thousand square feet is about adequate.
But you want your vegetables that you're eating to be
chock full of all the nutrients not just for the
sake of plant health, but also for the sake of
human health as well well. Asimite Texas dot com is
a website where you can go learn more about this
(18:35):
product that's mined out of the ground up in Utah.
Or you can just go to some garden center, feed store,
ace hardware store, Southwest Fertilizer places like that are going
to carry azamite, and now would be a good time
to get on that first application of the year. We're
going to head out now to San Antonio and talk
(18:55):
to Doug. Hello Doug, Welcome to garden Line.
Speaker 8 (18:59):
Hey Skip, I got easy one for you this morning.
All right, My front bed's got roseberry on the ends
and some Mexican heather in the middle. My purple fountain
grass did not come back this year, I don't think so.
I was thinking plant suggestion to change it out to
go with the rosemary and the heather. What would look
(19:19):
good there?
Speaker 2 (19:19):
What's your name? Rosemary? And heather is pretty much green.
You know, heather has a little purple flowers, but they're
not you know, they're not going to stop traffic. So
I would I would look for going into summer. Is
this this is in a lot of sun.
Speaker 8 (19:34):
I assume it's a north side house, so it only
gets like the morning.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
Sun, morning sun. Okay, you might want to consider something
that has foliage color that would all through the summer,
even if it wasn't blooming, look good. Or you may
want to put something with some bold color in there
behind it. You could change things up. There's a little
thing called a lime sizzle or fire bush that's kind
of a yellow and green splot leaves and then it
(20:01):
has these red tubular flowers on it and it would
do well. That sounds pretty. That sounds pretty, Yeah, it is.
You should google the bush and see lime sizzler specifically.
Fire bush is a good plant if the drainage is good.
It needs to be good drainage in that area. That
another one, the Chinese witch hazel laurel pedulum is the
(20:23):
fancy name, but it's a it's purple flowers. Just make
sure and get one that's that's small unless you have
room because those things can get huge. Or you can
have some that only get about three feet high that
you could put behind.
Speaker 8 (20:35):
Yeah, the rosemary is only about two feet eigh so
I don't want nothing bigger than they really.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
All right, doug Hey, thank you. I've got about ten
seconds to a hard commercial break, but good luck with that,
and uh, you.
Speaker 8 (20:48):
Know, thanks for the suggestions, yes, sir.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
You bet you take care. All right, folks, here we
are another commercial break time and we'll be right back.
You want to be first up. Seven one three two
one two ktrh. Good morning, those of you who are
waking up right now. Welcome to garden Line and wish
you a very happy Sunday if you'd like to get
(21:12):
to skull this morning. Seven one three two one two
ktr h. Seven one three two one two ktr H.
I have I was out yesterday and I've got some
of the mosquito buckets. That's what I call them. They
have a kind of a mosquito bait station. Maybe a
better term for them, but anyway, from Pest Brothers. Pest
Brothers is the pest control company that I'm always talking
(21:35):
about here on guarden Line, and I was checking them out.
What they basically are for those of you who haven't
heard me talk about them before, is there it's like
a little bucket with a funnel type lid and inside,
or is a concoction of something that has an odor
that drink brings mosquitoes to it and has water inside
of it. And uh then above the water is a
(21:57):
little screen and on that screen is a very fine
powdered dust that clings to the mosquito because they land
on the screen, so they can drop eggs in the water.
That's how they work. And this dust, this is kind
of cool. Okay, this is fun stuff here. Did you
know that when a insect flies through the air, it
picks up a static electrical charge. Bees do this too,
(22:21):
and it's one of the things that helps things cling
to the bee itself. But also with this mosquito when
it lands these dust particles, because they have the opposite charge,
they just they jump over and grab one of the
mosquito's legs and it flies away with them. Now, wherever
that mosquito lands, it's going to drop some little particles
in that water and make it an unsuitable place for
(22:44):
mosquitoes to breed and grow. Okay, And the bucket, by
the way, too, has a product in it where the
mosquito larvae will never turn into adults. So you want
them to lay your eggs in here, because they will
never grow up and become a don't biting mosquitos well,
and then the mosquito picks up this It's like you
know how BT kills caterpillars Basillis thingensis. It's a natural
(23:05):
caterpillar control. Doesn't hurt lady beetles, doesn't hurt birds, don
hert dogs, doesn't hurt grasshoppers, it just kills caterpillars. Well,
this is a product that the fungus that just gets mosquitos.
Is that cool or what? So this mosquito is not
going to be very long for the world and it's
gonna die itself, and it's like a really cool system.
(23:26):
So not only are you bringing them in and killing
them there, which you know, we can do that in
other ways, kill them in water, but we're having them
take substances to these other little places like a leaky
rain gutter or something else where there's a little bit
of water. Mosquitoes can can do a life cycle in
a bottle cap of water. So how many little water
(23:49):
spots do you have after a rain run the property
where mosquitoes can breede. That's why there's such a problem
here in the summer anyway. Bottom line, these pest brothers.
Folks come out, they set the buckets up, and not
only you, but your neighbors are gonna benefit from it
as well, because these mosquitoes are going around and wherever.
When they come to your bucket, when they leave wherever
they go, you're you're extending that mosquito control out now.
(24:10):
Pest Bros. They do, you know. They do everything from
wild varmits to household paths, termites, cockroaches, all the kind
of stuff you need. They do it all. They cover
a wide area. You can go all the way from
the Woodlands up north, you know, down Texas City south
and from Baytown on the east side all across to Katie.
Here's the website. You just need to go there, the
pest brosbros dot com, thepest bros dot com. Tell them
(24:34):
you heard about these mosquito buckets from Skip on Guarden Line.
Uh the phone number two eight one two o six
forty six seventy two eight one two o six forty
six seventy. They know what they're doing. They use quality
products at work. They use the safest products that you
can use out there. So when you worry about you know,
people and pets and things in the landscape. Talk to
(24:57):
pest bros. They know how to do it right, and
they know how to do it in the safest possible way.
Let's got to Richmond and we're going to talk to Tim. Hey, Tim,
welcome to garden Line.
Speaker 5 (25:09):
Hey, good morning, Skiff.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
Morning.
Speaker 5 (25:12):
Say Skip, I've got can you hear me?
Speaker 2 (25:16):
Yes, sir? Okay.
Speaker 5 (25:19):
I have a muni grass in my lawn and I
bought some of the nitroposs fifteen five ten wheat feet
put it on my side in the backyard.
Speaker 7 (25:30):
It's worked really good.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
Okay.
Speaker 5 (25:34):
My question is can I put it in my front yard?
I have some pretty good size of oak trees there,
probably twelve inches diameter fifteen eighteen feet tall. Can I
put it underneath them?
Speaker 9 (25:44):
Well?
Speaker 7 (25:44):
It hurt the trees?
Speaker 2 (25:46):
Okay. Is first of all, is your lung Saint Augustine.
Speaker 5 (25:51):
No, no, this, this nitroposs wheat and pete is only
for na for rita.
Speaker 2 (26:01):
Hmmm, I'm not sure which product you're talking about. Nitrofuss
has one that's a post emergent kills broad leaf weeds.
It's on the bag. The bag will be a bluish
purplish kind of color and it's it'll say with trimac
t R I M A C. That's the one that
kills existing weeds.
Speaker 5 (26:21):
No, it's not, it's not that skip it.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
It's news.
Speaker 5 (26:32):
I don't know if the chemical.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
Well, I'm there, I've lost you. So I'm only aware
of two nitropuss weed and feeds. One is has atrozine
and it's a light color bag, but you can't you
cannot use it on bermuda. The other one has trimac.
It's a post emergent. Atrozine's more pre emergent. Uh. Here's
the thing. If it has atrozine in it, you want
to be real careful using it around desirable plants like
(26:55):
trees and shrubs. If you put a lot down and
then get some rain on it, it can get on
a the root system and cause some problems. Atrozine moves
around a lot, so if you used it around a
tree shrub, you be very careful to use it at
the right rate and don't do it right before. You
might get a gully washer type rain coming in. Okay, object,
(27:17):
but I'm still not I'm still not sure which which
one we're You know, if you don't take a picture
of the bag and email it to me, I could
make a comment back on email. I'd be happy to
do that. But that's the two primary ones that we
see from nitrophoss. There's two. One is kind of a
light blue teal kind of color, teal color. The other
one is a is a darker blue purple blue purple
(27:40):
kind of cod. It looks like that.
Speaker 5 (27:44):
With nydrophiles, check with them. It's I think it's a
very new product. It's uh fifteen five and it works
really really good.
Speaker 2 (27:56):
All right, all righty, Well, just with any herbicide, just
always be careful. Was follow the label. That's the bottom line.
Speaker 10 (28:03):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (28:03):
You know, we tend to think if a teaspoon's good,
a tablespoon's better. So just avoid that kind of thinking
and follow that label carefully when you use it. Okay,
thank you too, you bet. Thanks for the call, Tim,
I appreciate that. All right. You're listening to the Guardline
phone number seven one three two one two ktr H
(28:25):
seven one three two one two kt r H antiq
Rosenporium up there in the Independence, Texas area. That's just
north Obronham. It's a beautiful place, by the way, that'd
be a great time to go that The blue bonnets
are still out they're still looking good. And boy, you
go up there through Chapel Hill and all the way
(28:45):
as you're heading up that direction, what a drive, and
it's so beautiful when you get out there. They are
loaded with roses. You know. They released two new roses
recently at the Anti Grozen po in that they bred themselves.
When I say they released a meaning they they're exclusive
to the end Rosenporium. One's called Glass Slipper and one
is called Cupid's Sweetheart Glass Slipper in Cupid's Sweetheart. Ask
(29:07):
them to show you those when you go out there
and see it. Lots of things happening at the ANTIQ Rosenperium.
The annual Easter egg Hunt is on April nineteenth. That's
coming up soon ten am. They got all kinds of
activities like a free egg hunt. Of course, they've got
kids crafts and you can purchase a face painting. The
Brandham Children's Museums can have a mobile exhibit there. Such
(29:28):
a really good event for kids. The don't even have lunchbox,
food truck serving burghers and pustion of those profits go
to the Brenham Children's Museum. ANTIQ rosen Porium will be
closed on Easter Sunday, April twentieth. Their normal business hours
are Monday through Saturday from nine thirty am to five
thirty pm. Now put on your calendar. April twenty sixth,
(29:49):
that is the Rose and Herb Conference. It'll be a
day full of educational seminars, workshops, and a lot more.
April twenty six from ten am to three pm. Don't
forget that that is coming up. Now. Why do you
go to anti Rosenporant? Well for roses, of course, roses,
roses and more rose. I mean they are loaded with
(30:10):
beautiful roads, but they also have lots of other wonderful plants,
plants that are like native plants, plants that are like
fruit plants. Even there's a wide variety of things that
they carry, flowers, houseplants, even in herbs. You need to
go see it. It's an awesome nursery. It's a fun trip.
So load up the car with friends and family when
(30:30):
you go, and everybody will have a good time. All right, folks,
we're back back on Guardline. Welcome, Glad to have you
with us. Nine to five Superturf is a nineteen four
to ten product that is silver bags. Easy to find
in the store because it's a silver bag and it's
going to feed for four months, So you put it
(30:52):
out now, and if you return your clippings, you don't
need to fertilize again. If you put down nine to
five superturf, you don't need another fertilization until we hit fall.
Really it works well, and that chemistry design to release
slowly prevents getting those flushes of grass growth that means
more shallow rooting or having to mow more often. It
(31:13):
just spreads it out for really the perfect lawn now.
Nine to five Superturf is available at places like Lake
Heart Lake Hardware and Angleton and Velasco. You go to
Stanton Shopping Center, North Taylor down in Alvin, or if
you're in clear Lake, M and D Claarlake on Bay
Area Boulevard. We're going to go to the phones now
and talk to Marty out in Fairfield. Hey, Marty, welcome
(31:34):
to garden Line.
Speaker 11 (31:35):
Morning morning to skip, Thank you. I was looking at
you want of your videos that Sherry was in and
she was talking about the correct product to put out
for dollar weed, and she had two green bottles and
I thought they were weed Beater Ultra with some surfacton
(31:57):
in it that I maybe wrong. Anyway, I had written
down on my image with my surfact and I had
mixed it in together that that was what was killing
my dollar weed last year. Which one would be the
best to use, the weed beater ultra or the image
with the surf factor.
Speaker 2 (32:20):
I don't think image controls dollar weed. I'd have to
go check that label. No, you know what it does?
It does. It does the If it's the image that
says image for nutsedge, I know that's weird. You're using
it has to say nutsedge to use it on dollar weed.
There's other products that have image on the name, and
(32:40):
I wish they wouldn't do this, but they're not the
same ingredient as image for nutsedge. But it does have
some effect. But probably your best effect is going to
be something with trimech in it. Trimec and all that
TRIMEC means is it means it has three different broad
leaf herbicides in it. And there are a number of
product the bon eyed weed beater. At least one of
(33:03):
the bon eyed weed beaters has trimech in it. There's
several variations on bone eye weed beater. You Joways have
to look at the label before you apply anything. But anyway,
the trimac type products are going to have it, are
going to control.
Speaker 11 (33:17):
Okay, I have the one for southern lawns as well.
I have we Beat and we beat her for southern lawns.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
Yeah, I'll go look well, and it may not what
you may may see instead of the word trimac is
it may say two four D dikamba and mecho prop
or mCPP. And I know that's confusing trying to hear
all that over the air and remember it later. I wouldn't.
(33:46):
But anyway, the bottom line is that hits it with
three different angles on broadly weed control, and it does
a pretty good job on it. But all of these products,
when when the weather heats up, the damage to Saint
August steam increases. So I would do it soon before
we get up in the nineties, and I would do
it in the morning. Do the treatment when it's cool,
(34:09):
so that is completely dried off before it heats the
day heats up, And the sooner you do it, the better.
Dollar weed is not easy to control. It's not easy
to keep under control, so you're gonna have to reapply
it a little bit later and In the meantime, anything
you can do to keep the ground from staying wet
will slow the dollar weed down. It goes crazy when
(34:30):
it's very wet, okay.
Speaker 11 (34:32):
And it won't kill my flowers in my garden.
Speaker 2 (34:37):
It will kill your flower. It kills broad leaf weeds.
These trimec products and the bone eyed weed beater, all
that kind of stuff, they kill broad leaf plants. So
if it's a petunia or if it's a dollar weed,
they don't the product doesn't care. Okay, all right, thank you, Okay,
all right, Martina, thank you very much. Appreciate appreciate your
call very much. Mosquito dunks are really product mosquito dumps,
(35:02):
dunks or a disease of mosquitos. You know I mentioned
earlier talking about BT kills caterpillars. Well, there's a type
of BT that just kills mosquitos and fungus nuts in
the soil. That's mosquito dunks. And they there are little
donuts and they come in. It comes in a granular
form also, or you can just take a donut and
low hammer and break it apart. But a donut floating
(35:24):
in the water will cover about one hundred square feet
of the a pond area, let's say for about a month,
which is really good. Or you can break it up
and use the little granules in anywhere water stands. You're
basically putting the mosquita disease in that water. Doesn't hurt birds,
doesn't hurt lady beetles, doesn't hurt the family pet. It's
(35:45):
not a disease of those, but it works well. And
mosquito dunks are available everywhere. You're going to find them
in ace hardware stores. You're gonna find them in feed stores.
Our independent garden centers carry those things. Southwest Fertilizer carries
those things. Mosquito dunks work, and boy or where hitting
mosquito season. So have fun out there. We're going to
go now to John in Brownsville. Hey, John, welcome to
(36:07):
guarden Line. Good morning, Skip. I've got a vine.
Speaker 12 (36:12):
Good morning.
Speaker 13 (36:13):
I've got a vine that Google lends identified as a
bush killer vine and grows up along the fences and
trees and whatnot. And okay, you try and pull it out,
you just make it mad. Is there any way?
Speaker 2 (36:29):
Yes, Yes, there is, Yeah, there sure is. If you
go to my website gardening with Skip dot com. I
have a publication on controlling woody weeds in the landscape.
So whether it's the vine you're talking about, or whether
it's poison ivy or pepper vine or hackberry seedlings coming
(36:53):
up where the birds spooped on a fence line and
now they're coming up in the fence line. If it's
a wood woody problem like that, this public tells you
how to do it. And so it's it's controlling what
he needs in the landscape. And the website is gardening
with skip dot com and uh, the product you're gonna
need is there's many of them on the market and
(37:15):
I list them there. But the ingredient is TRIMEC t
R I M e C. I'm sorry, I've stuck in
my last call triclop here to forget what I just said.
T R I c l O p y R. T
r I c l O p y R. That's the ingredient.
(37:37):
And you're not going to spray it. You're going to
dab it. And it tells you how to do it
on that publication. Thank you so much. You bet good
luck with that. Thanks take care. I appreciate your call. Yep,
that stuff really really works. And boy, do you ever
need to do that sometimes. Nelson Plant Food has a
(37:58):
product called Bruce's Brew is outstanding. It's a cool product
because it does release right away, but not everything, and
so it's going to give you an immediate response and
then it's going to give you a pretty good slower release,
not a super long time like some of the other
products that Nelson can provide. But Brusus Brew is just
(38:18):
a good all around fertilizer period. It helps that root development,
It helps to provide a good strong grass plant. And
also the carbon based nitrogen sources in Bruce's Brew help
feed sole microbes in the soil to stimulate, you know,
the overall soil health. You can get Brusus Brew a
lot of places all over town and it works good
for your lawns. You can use it for other things
(38:41):
as well. You know, fertilizers. They're fertilizers are fertilizers. So
get you some bruces bru get a little extra leftover,
use it around fruit trees using your vegetable guardian. It
has a lot of good uses. Bruss Brew that's from
the folks at Nitrofoss. I like that stuff. I like
the fact that you can see through the bag at
the granules too. That's kind of cool. You can kind
(39:03):
of see the combination of different things that they put
together in there. If you are looking to have compost
top dressing and core aeration done and you're inside the Beltway,
inside belt Way eight round Houston, that is where I
send our garden line listeners for compost, top dressing and
correation to year Round Houston. That's the name of the company,
(39:25):
year round Houston dot com. Year Round Houston dot com.
They use quality products, screened composts. They know how to
core air eight properly, and it essentially breathes life down
into your soil by getting oxygen down into the root
system and organic matter down into the surface. Year Round
Houston dot Com. That's the website. Here's the phone number
(39:47):
eight three two eight eight four fifty three thirty five.
I'll say that again, eight three two eight eight four
fifty three thirty five. Now I'm going to take a
little break for the top of the hour news and
I'll come back with your calls if you'd like to
be first up seven to one three two one two ktrh.
Speaker 4 (40:08):
Oh.
Speaker 2 (40:08):
I wanted to remind you this coming Saturday, next Saturday,
the nineteenth albeit Warren's Southern Gardens from twelve thirty to
two thirty. That's out in Kingwood. Come on out and
see me, number one. You need to see that place.
But come on out, alrighty, let's do this. Welcome back,
Welcome back to the garden line. Glad to have you
(40:31):
with us. I'm your host, skip rictor. We're here to
help you have a bountiful garden, a beautiful landscape, and
more fun in the process. That is at least my
goal into a garden line. Been advising gardeners for a
long long time. Spent thirty five years with Texas A
and m Agrolife Extension as a horticulturist in different parts
of the area. Spent some time in Montgomery County, some
(40:53):
time down in Harris County, Rises County, and Travis County
over in Austin as well, and heard a lot of
questions through the years and learned a lot. Hopefully taught
a few things to gardeners to help them have success.
But you know, anytime you rub shoulders with gardeners, number one,
it's fine. Gardeners are great people. But also you learn
(41:15):
a few things you really do and I think that's
kind of cool. In Shanny Gardens is the garden center
out there there in Richmond Rosenberg that's north of Richmond
Rozenburg toward the Katie Fulsher side. So they're out there
on FM three fifty nine. It's really easy to get
to F three fifty nine up there, and they just
have such an unusual collection of plants that you haven't seen.
(41:39):
Now you're going to go there and you're going to
see all the standards, you know, the meat and potatoes
that in any garden center, they're going to have it,
of course, but then they have unusual things, you know,
things that you just don't you just don't see as much.
Like there's there's a bush clover called little Volcano. It's
a type of Lespidisa and it has these little arching,
(42:01):
overflowing branches with flowers on them that are really cool,
really unusual, and it's it's a pretty cool shrub little
volcano bush clover, but it's one that you don't see much.
And it's also one by the way, deer don't don't
care for. Uh, They've got a lot of other things.
There's a plant that I think we need to be
planting more often in our gardens. We just don't We
(42:23):
just don't see people planting them enough, in my opinion.
And it's called balloon flower. Balloon flower has flowers that
when before they open, they are literally a little puffy,
five cornered balloon. And I don't know how to describe
it than that, but imagine, you know, like a pentagon shape,
(42:44):
but puffy with air inside, and then it opens up
into a pretty low purple flower. I just think that's
the coolest a little fire and if you have kids,
I mean that that is a really cool little thing
to play with. By the way, that deer don't care
for that one as much either. Uh. And and another
thing we we don't use enough of is kalladiums outside
of the shade. Now, kalladium's always been a shade plant.
(43:08):
We know that you put these big, old, giant heart
leaf shape kalladiums in the shade and they just set
the shade, They lighten up the shade, they brighten the area.
That hilarious call attention to it. But kalladiums have been
bred over the years to be more and more sun tolerant,
and there are kaladiums that are sometimes just referred to
(43:30):
as sun kalladiums. Some of them have heart shaped leaves.
A lot of them have strappy leaves, more like a
spear point, not that narrow, a big fat spear point, Okay,
And kaladiums can take absolute full sun. There are kalladiums
that can take absolute ful sun, and so you can
use them if you've got an area that gets some shade,
but it sometimes gets that brunt of the sun too.
(43:52):
Kalladians is a great way. And remember when you do
color foliage in your landscape. When you do color, you
don't have to have blooms. It's the it's the foliage
that is your color. So you get the pinks and
the reds and the and the whites of a kalladium
in the involved and you mix them with other plants
and it's just huge swaths of color. Beautiful, beautiful. Anyway,
(44:14):
a few thinks. By the way, all that stuff and
more is available out there in Channa Gardens, and the
website is in chenned Gardens Richmond dot com in Chennigardens
Richmond dot com. When you get out there, you're gonna
find They know that brown stuff comes before green stuff,
and so you're gonna find soils from Nature's Way, soils,
from airloom soils. You're gonna find fertilizers from Microlife and
(44:35):
Nitrofoss and Nelson Plant Food and Medina to get the
ground ready. So when you buy their plants and take
them home, they hit the ground running and they look good.
And by the way, enthusiastic team expert advice everything you
want when you go to a garden center in Channed
Gardens on the Katie Folshire side of Richmond, in Chenned
Gardens Richmond dot com. That is the website. While you're
(44:57):
out there, you know I mentioned you are going to
Microlife Fertilizers and they carry a wide variety of them.
And you know Microlife's sixty four the green Bags the
number one selling organic fertilizer in the Greater Houston area.
You can go to their website, and I would encourage
you to do that. Go to the website Microlifefertilizer dot com,
Microlifefertilizer dot com, and there you can learn about all
(45:19):
their products, lots of granular products, lots of liquid products.
Each has its own strengths that and like why would
you use this one or that when some of them
are especially good at inoculating the soil with specific microbes
that have specific jobs to help your plants. They vary
in terms of the content of the nutrient in them.
(45:40):
And you can just pick the product that helps you
have success in the lawn right now. Put in the
green bag the sixty four. It's the one for your
lawns right now, get it done. You can repeat it
a couple of times through the summer to extend that
feeding on through the summer. I would also do the
humanates plus right now. Humans plus is a pa. You
(46:01):
don't put it down to make the lawn, just take
off with green growth. That's what the six' two four.
Does the humants plus is for the. Soil it is
the final decomposed stage of organic. Matter that's why they
call it concentrated compost in a. Bag humats plus is
a purple. Bag put out the, grain come, back load
(46:22):
up your, hopper put out the purple simple as, that
and you over, time as you do, this you are
making your lawn better and better by making the soil
better and better and keeping the microbes happy and active
with exactly what they use to feed on as they
release those nutrients back to your to your growing. Turf
(46:43):
uh excuse me choking up here a little bit this.

Line good, Morning thank. You.
Speaker 14 (48:15):
Si, LOOK i told you about two weeks ago about
that Plant, Colancho, panada AND i told you think the
PLACE i barked. From they said you can make a
tea out of. It it's supposed to be one of
those medicinal. Herbs it's. Uh it's a used for a
wide range of, elements from, bronchitis asthma and coughs to, headaches, informations,
(48:37):
infections and, bruises as well as for, hypertension, diabetes and kidney,
stones or, psoriatis, rheumatism and point joint.
Speaker 2 (48:49):
PAIN i have, problems, Man that's everything except ingrown toenails
and cradle Cop.
Speaker 14 (48:58):
WELL i talked to a, guy he's a biotech professor
at a Long star of college AFTER i talked to
you is about a week, later and he, said you,
know lots of that stuff is folk loreer and don't
take it too serious and everything like. That asked him
he thought it might be animal because you can make
a tea out of. Him and he, said you didn't,
Know BUT i, said, Well i'm gonna give it a.
SHOT i got that complete guide to editle wild plant
(49:20):
by the by THE Us.
Speaker 2 (49:21):
Army i'm gonna.
Speaker 14 (49:22):
Go through the eight. Steps who're not dying from eating the?
Plant and if it? Works, okay all right. NOW i
NEVER i didn't see anything on. It AND i tell, you,
Yeah i'm always real.
Speaker 2 (49:35):
Cautious about that stuff, because, uh you, know like you,
said it could be a. Mess so what is what
is your what did you find out anything? Else?
Speaker 14 (49:45):
NO i, SAID i talked to that biotech. PROFESSOR i
don't want to use his name BECAUSE i. AIN'T i
didn't get, permission but he, said you, know you, know he,
said PROBABLY i was asking him about double boiling like
you do that, pokeweed you, know and if it did
some poison erg to pour it, off and then you
helped me see it, Mighty SO i don't.
Speaker 2 (50:04):
Know, YEAH i don't. KNOW I i saw a research
paper on the genus Itself, coleno and, uh you, know
there are there have been some studies in traditional medicine
and some various. Things BUT i tell you from a
standpoint of someone growing and eating, IT i don't, know you,
know because medical medications have doses and sometimes side effects and,
(50:27):
things so i'd be real careful on that. One but,
anyway it is. INTERESTING i had never heard of. It
but until you asked that. Question, WELL i got.
Speaker 14 (50:35):
It From richter's herb coming in you, Know, canada and,
okay it's in the candle, this it's got all this.
Speaker 2 (50:43):
Stuff so, yeah that's a good. Company i'll try it his.
Speaker 14 (50:49):
Externally he, said you, know you can't hurt you, externally
So i'll try it that.
Speaker 2 (50:52):
Way, okay, Thanks, robert appreciate.
Speaker 4 (50:59):
That.
Speaker 2 (50:59):
Thanks we call it, okay thank. You you, know the
talking about poke weed and and uh pouring the water.
Off if those of you, going what what's going on, There,
well there's there's a wild weed called poke, weed and
it gets real, tall got big old wide, leaves kind
of purple reddish purplish kind of stem colors on. It
but it's, poisonous, uh and or it can. Be and
(51:21):
but if you cook it and pour the water, OFF
i don't, know once or Twice i'm not gonna find.
OUT i don't. Know but But, southerners you, know out
in The. South. Uh you remember HOW i was talking
earlier in the show about we don't have to grow
food to survive, anymore, RIGHT i, mean it's not that
kind of thing where if your garden, fails you start to,
well there have been times when you're eating stuff out
(51:43):
of the woods and everything to survive for. Folks and poke,
anyway poke weed was a was A southern favorite for
a lot of folks in the. Countrysides and they that
they knew to pour the water. Off AND i was,
wondering how did that? Happen you, know you you you
got something and you eat it and it kills, you,
okay or it makes You we're real, sick and then
suddenly now we need. It but we learned to pull the.
(52:03):
Water how do you learn to pull the water? Off you?
Know with some lady trying to get rid of her sunny,
lawn she cooked up a batch of poke salad and
brought it to the, table and she stumbled and fell
and it all spilled, out and she went and put
new water in it again and then brought it. Back
AND i don't know if what's going on that's a morbid,
idea but you, know how do you figure out that
if you pour the water, off poke salad a couple of,
(52:25):
times or pokeweed a couple of, times that it gets
that out of. THERE i don't know, ANYWAY i got
a lot of questions like, that But i'm not going
to drone on about the about the air but on the.
Air BUT i do think it is kind of interesting to.
SEE i was stopped in At Nelson Water gardens And
nursery the other. DAY i was passing through there visiting
with were off about some of the things going, on

Mix i've talked about many times in the. Past, roses beautiful,
Roses louisiana, irises that's a that's another good. One if
you got a shady, spot stays a little on the wet, side,
boy not many plants want to grow in a soggy
wet shade a bright, shade But louisiana iris. Will it
(54:13):
does really well. There, Anyway Nelson nursery And Water gardens

Speaker 13 (54:31):
Thing you.
Speaker 2 (54:32):
Know we need to we need to be getting kittles
involved in gardening. MORE i think it is a great
idea to do that for a number of. Reasons number,
one it's a fascinating world of. Nature it is just
that in and of, itself the wonder of, nature the
appreciation for, nature that is. Cool another reason is our
health is determined in large part by what we put
(54:55):
in our, mouth and that that's one of our big
health problems in this country is the fact that we
basically are eating a bunch of stuff that is not
good for our. Bodies and when a kid grows up
and grows, vegetables they're more likely to eat. Them that's
just a. FACT i, mean they're not just in, research
which it has proven, that but anybody can tell, you you,
know if a kid may look at a vegetable you
(55:16):
bring from the kitchen to put on their plate with
a raised, eyebrow and then you take them outside and
let them grow, it and then they're part of harvesting
and bringing it in they're more likely to eat. It
and the more fresh vegetables we, eat the better off we.
Are kids need to be. Gardening they need to grow
flowers and vegetables and. Herbs they need to appreciate the
smells of the. Garden And i'm just on a little soapbox,
Here So i'm gonna get off the. Soapbox AND i
(55:39):
Know i'm, biased but that doesn't Mean i'm. Wrong i'm
biased toward, gardening but that don't Mean i'm. Wrong get
you kids out there and have a good time with
them in the. Garden medina has to grow six twelve
six is A medina, product and by the, way there
are a lot of Great medina products out. There medina
has To grow contains that high quality six twelve six
(56:04):
nutrient pack that means lots of. Phosphorus so Whenever i'm
planting a, plant drenching it With medina hash to, groll
six twelve six gets that phosphorus down in the root,
system down in the soil because that little plant pulled
out of the container now has to get a root
system established so it can. Survive and the more help
you give it to hit the ground running IS i
(56:24):
like to say in other, words to get in the
soil and the roots just take off and they thrive
because what they need is there hashtro six twelve six provides.
It it all also Has medina soil activator in. It
it is a. Concoction it's not just a. Fertilizer it
stimulates biological. Activity it's got humic acid in, it which
improves our soil. Structure and it's just a good thing to.
(56:46):
Do and the WAY i would suggest you do it
is mix it in water according to the, label plant your.
Plant What i'll often do is put the plant in the,
ground put a little soil around, it but don't fill
the hole, completely and then drench that hole with medina
hash to grow the, roofball the hole and. Everything then
fill it up with, swilt watered again in real good
with medina has to. Grow and then a week later
(57:07):
do it, again and then a week later do it.
Again so three different, days three times about a week
or more. Apart you're putting that down into the plant
and you will see fast, response good, success and good.
Survivability but not just, survivability but the plant will. Thrive
that's what we want it to. Do you're listening to
(57:28):
Garden line our phone number seven one three two one
two fifty eight seventy four seven one three two one

a great selection of planets right now and, products AND
i like the way things are set. Up by the
way they're new indoor store setting is just. Great they've
redone the whole. Thing it looks really good, inside and
they've excellent quality. Tools they've got a superb selection of,
(58:11):
seeds really good, seeds and then things like gifts that
you might want to. Buy and then whatever season you,

for plant and, onions they've got things like that in,
there and that's where all the products. Are and if

years whether it's side webworms and invasions or. Whatever they've
(58:54):
seen it all and they know what works plants for all.
Seasons full service retail garden center right, there just North
lutta ON Fm Tomball, PARKWAY fm two forty, nine two
eight one three seven six sixteen forty six two eight
one three seven six sixteen forty. Six goat check out
(59:14):
the latest things that they've gotten In beautiful pottery too
at that place by the. Way Outstanding pottery was in
there a good while. BACK i got one of the
venus fly traps and they have they have different kinds from,
seasonally different kinds of insect eating, plants insectivorous. Plants you,
(59:37):
know there's things like venus fly trap that you put
the little fly in or the fly lands in and
it closes on them and dissolves the fly. Away is
that way cool or. What. So they also have things
like sundews sometimes that are, sticky and the bug lends
on them all and nat lands on, them and it
dissolves them a. Way there are a lot of plants
out there that eat eat. Insects pitcher plants another. One
(01:00:00):
the insect falls, inside it drowns in the water and
then it just dissolves. Away it's kind of a nasty
thing to think. About rough for, dinner but dissolved a
way bug goo that the plant takes up the nutrients
and loves on. That it's a rough world out, there.
Folks it's not a doggy dog. World it's a plenty bug.
(01:00:22):
World all. Right we're going to go out To parland
now and talk To. Bill, Hey, bill welcome to Garden. Line,
hey how you.
Speaker 10 (01:00:31):
Doing my question is THAT i have GOOD i have
some what the magnos they're blooming. Now my particular, ONE
i call it a little gim you, know it's not
like The Southern man or The Saint. Mary's you, know
they're a little more compact and stuff that they do get.
(01:00:51):
BIG i want to talk to you about cutting them
in about you, know you, know eight to ten inches
the top some and then cutting them in to see
IF i can get more of a flush in with
leaves and, stuff because, they you, know tend to get
a LITTLE i don't want to use the word, leggy
(01:01:12):
but thinner because they branch out SO i can create some,
density yes.
Speaker 2 (01:01:17):
Sir, yeah so the. Magnolia the thing that creates density
first of all is. Sunlight good sunlight is. Important any
plant gets lenkier when it's in less sun and little,
gems the slower growing a little more. Compact they still
get size on them, eventually but not like the regular.
Magnolia but if you trim a branch, back you don't
(01:01:39):
go too far, back trim it back a little. Bit
you will get shoots and it'll come. Out it will densen, up,
dense get, DENSER i should say a little, bit and
you could use. That but sunlight is also very important on.
That so either way you, go if you want to
do a little bit of, that just don't overdo.
Speaker 10 (01:01:56):
It right WHEN i talk about eight ten, inches that's
not too drastic, though and, SOMETHING i, mean they had
quite a bit of.
Speaker 2 (01:02:02):
Size you, Know i'm not looking to kill. It, yeah,
yeah generally not generally. Not but sunlight is the number one.
Thing Mag those are pretty good about filling in pretty
good if they got good. Sun, Hey i've got A
i've got a. Run i'm up against a. Heartbreak but
thank you for your. Call. Bill good luck getting that in, order.
Folks i'll be right back all, right someone, else but
(01:02:24):
not for all, right, folks welcome back To. Guardline good
have you with. Us looking forward to visiting with you
about the things that you want to talk about regarding
having a more, bountiful beautiful garden and. Landscape, hey seven
one three two one two k t R h is
the number seven one three two one two k t R.
(01:02:46):
H RECENTLY i was out At cienamulch and you know
there's they have a lot of impressive things, there a
lot of impressive, products high. Quality you know That. CINAMULTCH
i like to think Of cienamulch as the prime place
to go for everything foundational for your landscape and. Garden
the brown, stuff if you. Will so that includes composted,
(01:03:09):
materials that includes bed, mixes that includes nutrients to go
in the, soil of fertilizers because they they carry everything
you hear me talk about like microlife And nelson Turf
star and they, know some plant food jars and products From,
medina products from nitrofoss products from. Azamite you, know they
have blends like the heirloom soil, blends for, example the
veggieinerbic specifically they carried that. There but they also have
(01:03:33):
beautiful stone AND i don't THINK i talk about that,
much but if you're looking for like river rock to
have like a dry river bed for drainage in your,
landscape if you're looking for flat flagstones to create a little,
patio or stones to build a, border stones to build you,
know a little wall that's a short wall in the.
Landscape they have everything and all kinds of colors these,
(01:03:56):
places these stones have come in from all kinds of. Places,
beautiful beautiful. Stones and that is just another of the
many things they have there At Ciana. Maltch. No you
can go there by the. Way they're Open monday Through
friday seven thirty to, Five saturday seven thirty to. Two
they're closed On. Sundays close. Today they're ON fm five twenty.
ONE i would suggest just go to the Website Sienna
(01:04:18):
multch dot Com Sienna maltz dot com for that whole
region down. There this is the one stop, shop and
they also deliver within about a twenty mile radius of
where they're. Located but don't forget those. Stones go check
those out next time you're out. There even if you're
buying a bag of fertilizer or a bag of maltz
or something or getting, bulk go check out the stones
(01:04:41):
that they. Have they're really, beautiful really. Beautiful let's head,
now let's, see we're gonna go To matt In. Tumball, Hey,
matt welcome to Garden. Line Heys, Kip good.
Speaker 15 (01:04:54):
Morning HAD i heard somebody calling last week with a
question about getting rid Of bermuda gra In Saint.
Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
AUGUSTINE i.
Speaker 15 (01:05:02):
Have i've done a section Where i've killed killed it
all and replaced it with new, side and that's incredibly
labor intensive and, costly AND i was wondering if there
was another way to go about.
Speaker 2 (01:05:12):
That, uh the the easy answers, Know, Okay, uh there
is there is something that like a commercial applicator can put.
On there's a process where they can get rid Of.
(01:05:32):
St bermuda And Saint. Augustine but it's not a cheap.
Process if you if you are determined to do, that
if You i'm going to put you on. Hold if
you will email, ME i will send you some information on.
That but if this isn't normally something that just, oh
go to the garden center and buy this and spray
it and it all goes. Away it's it's a little
(01:05:53):
more involved than, that but there technically there is a
way to deal with. It but and for all practical,
purposes from just a homeowner, standpoint the answer would be,
no it's just an unfortunate. Situation.
Speaker 15 (01:06:06):
OKAY i saw a product online that was quite. EXPENSIVE
i didn't want to buy, it you, know if it didn't,
work so, FRAME i would love to hear what you.
Speaker 2 (01:06:14):
Got so, yeah, yeah WELL i don't mind if you,
know if you want, to if you want to tell
me the name of what you, SAW i don't mind
responding to. That but it was let me just a,
SECOND i could pull it up pretty. Quick, yeah, yeah
it you know WHAT i. Don't let's just, no that's, Okay,
(01:06:36):
no that's. OKAY i just didn't know if we would
be talking about the same. Thing, Anyway i'm going to
put you on. Hold my Producer alejandro will pick up
and give you an email and then, uh just send
me that tell. Me we talked on the, air and
you want information on. That, okay, great appreciate. It thank
you so. Much all, Right, matt thanks you bet appreciate
that a. Lot nitrofis super turf is nitrophus is slow release.
(01:07:00):
Fertilizer this stuff's been around a long time and it.
WORKS i don't care if you Have Saint, augustine, bermuda, grass.
Luysia in our hot and humid, climate you need a
fertilizer that's gonna give you a, nice, gradual slow release
through the. Summertime it's just the way to. Go In
superturf in the silver bag From nitrofis silver bag four.
Months you return your clippings during that time and your
(01:07:23):
next fertilizations in the fall if you do the super turf.
Now now you can Find superturf at a lot of.
Places Fishers hardware On broadway down In laport In, Pasadena
Fishers hardware On SOPPHOMORE d and De feed up In
tomball's another place you're gonna get nitrofoss. Products and then
there's of course the plants for all seasons On Tomball.
Parkway see we're going to go now out To marie And.
(01:07:47):
Montgomery Hello, marie welcome To. Guardline good, Morning Skip.
Speaker 16 (01:07:52):
SKIP i least applied my nitropaals barricade in the middle Of.
FEBERWARD i also did an application in the winter. Time
SHOULD i do another one or.
Speaker 2 (01:08:03):
Not that when we're looking at warm season, weeds grass
burrs and things like, that you can get continued sprouting
into the. SUMMERTIME i wouldn't say that every year you
need to apply it twice or three. Times, actually, spring,
summer and, fall you really should put it on probably
(01:08:26):
a couple times a. Year but if this is an,
issue it's been long enough now where you could do
it again and extend that protection a little. Further BUT
i would primarily be working from the spring through the
summer and getting that lawn nice and deep and. Dense
but then in the fall for the cool season weeds In,
(01:08:46):
october we would be applying something like that.
Speaker 16 (01:08:49):
Again, Okay and then my next question Is i'll be
a spring and also my herbicide and doing my fertilized
for as.
Speaker 2 (01:08:58):
Well does it MATTER i.
Speaker 16 (01:09:01):
Should do it, first WHETHER i should do the post
emergent and then fertilize the, lawn or does it?
Speaker 2 (01:09:09):
Matter it doesn't matter a. Lot the only thing that
if you're going to use a post emergent and that
means you want to spray it on the weed, leaves
is don't, mow you, know wait a week after you've
mowed to spray, it because then you've got a lot
of weed leaves to spray. Onto if you mow and
(01:09:29):
then go out there to, spray you just cut off
a lot of the leaves you're trying to get wet
with the Herbicidect. Oh and also having said, that then
don't mow the day after you, spray you know you
want you want to give it a little time for
that product to move down into the weed. Plant so
that that would be the ADVICE i would give you
on that Perfect, Okay, well thank you so very, much you, Bet,
(01:09:52):
marie thanks for the. Call appreciate that a. Lot tree
hugger sprinklers are designed to go around a. Tree it's
a little hinge sprinkler comes in, seven eleven and fifteen
inch sizes and you turn it on as far as
you need to water the area where you want to.
Water so if it's a brand new rose bush or
a brand new, tree you may just barely turn it,
(01:10:13):
on so it water is a little seven to fifteen inch, area,
okay right where the rootball. Is turn it on a little.
More water's. Larger you may have a five year old,
trees big old spreading tree now really, going and when
we get into summer heat and, drought you crank it
up and you water the whole area within that branch
spread of the. Tree tree hugger is very versatile like.
That you're going to find them AT d AND D
feed And tomball several of these hardware stores Like Single,
(01:10:36):
Ranch KATIACE k and M ace out in A Tascasda
Fullshia ace for, Example Southwest Fertilizer, League City Feed Spring
Creek Feed center up In magnolia, Direction Nelson Water gardens
out In Katie arborgate And TOMBALL Rcw nurseries Where beltway
eight comes in to two forty Nine Warren Southern gardens In.
Kingwood out there In, kingwood go down to go down
(01:10:59):
To Richmond rosenberg And Chanted forest And Chanted. Gardens they
all carry TreeHugger. Sprinklers they're easy to, get they, last they.
Work you need to have one whether you're planning a
new plant or rescuing a plant during drought, stress tree hugger.
Sprinkler it's a good product to. Use i'm gonna take
a little. Break when we come, Back joe And, magnoia
you're going to be our first. Up, hey welcome, Back welcome,
(01:11:22):
Back guardline. Folks good have you with? Us, listen summertime
is for, beautiful beautiful container color out there on the.
Patio AND i love containers because you can put them
wherever you. WANT i, mean you can set a container
on a stone out in the middle of your grass
if you want. TO i like to put them on a,
patio or Sometimes i'll put them on a driveway up
at the end of a driveway along the, sides or
(01:11:44):
however you want to decorate. Them whatever's going. On you
got a shady area that you need to get some color.
In maybe it's a maybe it's a, porch any, crests
no soil on the. Porch just put a nice container
with some beautiful shade loving. Plants but when you do,
that make sure you get a container that's adequate, sized
sol's plenty of plenty of soil so that you're not
having to water twice a. Day and then, secondly, uh
(01:12:06):
the container that has drainage holes in it so it
doesn't get water. Logged and then, third and this is very,
important is a soil, mix a potting mix that is
going to drain, well but it's the same time still
retain some, moisture you, know so you're not watering it
every day because it doesn't hold any, moisture but you
don't it To you don't want it to be too.
(01:12:27):
Mucky you want it to drain. Well in jungle land
flour and vegetable planting, soil it's a good quality product
that does just. That you can find. It it's an
else Uh nitrofoss distributed. Product and that's the jungle end
the outdoor When i'm talking about By, nitrofross that's jungle
end flour and vegetable planning. Soil you're gonna find it. All,
really Nit fass products are available all over. Town that's
(01:12:50):
just the bottom. Line they are a lot of different.
Places but you go to place LIKE Rcw, nursery you're
gonna find Those hiding And feed On Stubner, airline or
maybe you're in The memorial. Area Ace Hardware city On
Memorial drive just an example of places that carry Night fuss.
Products we're going to run now out To magnolia and
speak To joe this. Morning, Hey, joe welcome To Guarden
(01:13:12):
line Warriors.
Speaker 17 (01:13:14):
HIP i HAVE i got about an acre and a
half of, yard AND i was considering buying a liquid
sprayer that the kindage pulled behind a. Lawnmower it's about
fifteen to twenty gallon kind of a. Deal, okay put
out fertilizer and bunge aside and those kind of. THINGS
(01:13:35):
i was just wondering what your thoughts were about.
Speaker 2 (01:13:37):
That, WELL i like these, granules you, know for the,
fertilizers but there you can use liquid. Sprays it's just you,
know the mount you're putting, out you're gonna have to redo.
It it's a. Liquid it doesn't last as, long but
there's nothing wrong with doing. That it allows you to
spot treat as you. Wish but if you want to
go with something you know it's going to give you
(01:13:58):
a longer, term like a slow, release that would need
to be a, granule but you could certainly do it that.
Way you just need to make sure not mix your
fertilizer solutions too strong when you put them down on the.
Plants and there are some that are already made for
that kind of. Application when it comes to, fungicides that
is an, option as is. Granules so either way you
(01:14:20):
want to. Go when it comes to, insecticides you also
have that, option is to go liquid or. Granule the
bottom line is you get the right. Ingredient that's number one.
Importance number two importance is to put on at the
right time of course for what you're going, after and
then to make sure you get it to where the pest.
(01:14:41):
Is so like if you use the, liquid you would
need enough water to get it down there in the
thatch where chinchbugs are hiding or where sod webworms are
hiding for.
Speaker 17 (01:14:50):
Example, YEAH i was thinking more a lot of fertilizer
and the funge side because it's a big. Yard but
as far as the spot you, know the chinchbugs and
those guys kind of. Things, yeah it's stick with granular and, yeah,
yeah do you have any Sugget is there any particular
products or brands or anything that.
Speaker 8 (01:15:10):
You?
Speaker 2 (01:15:10):
KNOW i don't. KNOW i had a sprayer like that one,
time a LITTLE i think it's twenty five gallon or
something THAT i pulled behind and it had it had
a little bar going across with the little sprayers going
down on. It but that was mainly like for weed
control for, example that we were using that kind of thing.
For BUT i don't have a. Brand there's a bunch
(01:15:31):
on the, market and you're gonna find, them you, know
from everywhere from lawn and garden equipment companies to you,
know the tractor supply type places all over, town to online.
ORDERING i, mean there's just a lot of different places
you can get something like.
Speaker 17 (01:15:47):
That all, right, sir, WELL i appreciate your.
Speaker 2 (01:15:50):
Input all, Right, well very, Good good luck with. It
i'll need. It take, care all. RIGHT i was Visiting
buchanans a while back and just admiring the. Houseplants AND
i hate the term houseplant actually because no plant is
(01:16:13):
naded to the, house, Right but plants you can put
in the house because the house is low light and
these plants can put up with, that. Right they have
got an unbelievable. Selection but it's not just plants for
in the. House it's plans for that front porch that's all,
bright and it's plants for containers, outside you know that
we would think of as houseplants because maybe they're strings
(01:16:34):
of you, know string of, pearls string of, turtles string
of there's so many, strings can't even keep up with.
Speaker 17 (01:16:39):
Them.
Speaker 2 (01:16:39):
All buchanans has all, that and then they have those
gorgeous tropical foliage houseplants with the big old leaves and
all kinds of different kinds of philodendrons and, pothos and
just the. COLORS i Like chinese evergreen, too by the,
way it's a it's aglionema is another name for, it
but it has, big wide. Leaves the old types used
(01:17:02):
to be just basically green or green and. Silvery now
we have beautiful, colors kind of a coral, color pink,
colors reddish colors in the, foliage and that is a
nice way to decorate. Inside And buchanans is loaded with. That,
now what Is buchanans, About, well they're about every kind
of plant you can, imagine from vegetables and herbs to
flowers and, perennials to shade loving, plants to plants that attract,
(01:17:24):
pollinators that attract, hummingbirds that attract. Butterflies but they are
really the top place in the whole region when it
comes to native. Plants buchanans native. Plants it's in their
Name they're On Eleventh street in The heights and if
you haven't gone, there you need to. Go you really
do need to. Go you, know there used to be
a time when native plants were not that, available and
(01:17:45):
there may be some good plants out, there but nobody
carries them because nobody asks for, them because nobody knows about.
Them it's not that way Of Buchanans. Plants they bring
in the best Native in, fact OFF i follow them
on social media and you should. Too you should also
set up for the newsletter On buchanansplants dot. Com sign
up for the. Newsletter that's our. Website But i'm always.
(01:18:06):
Amazed it's LIKE i didn't know that plant was in the.
MARKET i didn't know you could buy. It it's a great,
plant and they have it there because they're talking about
they feature native plants and things like. THAT i could
go on and, on but, anyway when you're At, buchanans
get the stuff that makes the soil, right that builds a.
Foundation that would be products from microlife and nitrofoss And
nelson that would be soils From Nature's way and heirloom
(01:18:27):
soils for. Example And buchanans has their own proprietary soil
blends that they have there At Buchanan's plants in The
heights On Eleventh, Street Buchanan's plants dot. Com that's a.
Website you. KNOW i talk about our company's websites a,
lot but we have some outstanding independent garden center websites
(01:18:48):
out there and you need to check them. Out they
are very, helpful a lot of good information on helping
you have. Success of, course when you sign up for
one of these, newsletters which our good garden centers do
have newsletters stuff. Them you're getting updates on hey this
is on, sale or hey we just got this. In
but you're also getting tips like how do you put
(01:19:09):
together a little ferry garden? Container or you, know how
do you control diseases on? Roses or how do you
go about fertilizing a lawn? Properly you? Know or what
is an organic way to deal with you know fill
in the. Blank these are the kind of things that
our independent garden centers are putting out, there and they're,
(01:19:29):
available and so you got to. SUBSCRIBE i know you
get a lot of stuff in your. EMAIL i do,
too But i'll tell you WHAT i do, read and
that is anything that comes from our great independent garden
centers here In, Houston, North, South, East, west And. Central
we have a good garden center for you. There they're out,
there AND i would encourage you to go visit, them
and if you haven't been to, one just for, fun
(01:19:51):
make an outing out of. It go and see these.
Places they are each. Unique they each have their own,
Flavor they each have their own you know, EMPHASIS i
guess if you. WILL i Mentioned buchanans and they got
a lot of natives along with everything. Else but each
garden center has its own unique. Things but take advantage of.
That this afternoon would be a great time to go
(01:20:14):
to some of our independent garden. CENTERS i had to
call yesterday someone that got some advice from a big box,
store and my response to it, was that's. Wrong what
they said they heard from the store was. Wrong it's not.
Right and you, Know i'm not here just the disks
big box. Stores BUT i got a soapbox that's just
a little. Bit independent garden centers are people that are,
(01:20:37):
gardeners typically families that have done this for a very long,
time and they hire people who are, Knowledgeable they train them,
right and they are experts in customer service and horticultural.
Help they. Are when you go to big, chains you
oftentimes we'll have somebody that isn't at all aware of
(01:21:02):
what's going. ON i went into a big box on
time and saw some products on the, wall AND i,
Thought i'm going to ask this person here working in
the center a. Question AND i asked him a. QUESTION
i could tell they didn't have a. Clue AND i,
said how long you been working? Here they, said, oh
about a? Week well, really what were you doing before?
THAT i was working in a beauty shop cutting. Hair,
(01:21:24):
Okay i'm not sure that you should be turned loose
on the chemical aisle of a garden. Center another, TIME
i went to a garden center AND i was got
to meet with the manager of the garden. Center we
had a. Meeting WHEN i got, there manager was. Gone
the new manager was, In, oh how are you? Good
where'd you how'd you get? Here? OH i was working
at the jewelry counter last. Week that's not where you
(01:21:48):
get find. Advice i'll leave it at that. Stop all,
right we're. BACK i had to run go get some.
COFFEE i hope you're a bright eyed and bushytail this.
Morning ready to go here's the phone number seven one
three two one TWO. Ktrh seven one three two one TWO.
(01:22:09):
Ktrh good to have you with. US i was AT
Rcw nurseries yesterday and just had a really good. TIME
rcw is just a fun place to. Visit it really,
is AND i appreciate them having me. Out we had
a really good. Time they have so many beautiful. Things
when it comes to trees and, shrubs, THOUGH i tell,
(01:22:29):
you you, know they grow their own up there In
plantersville At Williamson Tree farm and bring them. In and
so someone was commenting to. Me we were talking there
and they were, going you, know they're just in such great.
Shape there was a customer talking to they buy trees
and shrubs FROM, rcw and, yes they are in great.
Shape they know how to grow a, tree, right and
not everybody. Does i'm telling you That i've Seen i've
(01:22:53):
seen trees and shrubs and for various, reasons they just
weren't in the best shape for establishing well for. You,
WELL rcw knows how to do, it and they know
what grows. Here so they're not going to grow some
blue spruce and sell It tea In. Houston so you
can take it home and kill. It they're going to
sell you things that want to be here and that
will thrive. Here by the, way they're located At Tamba
(01:23:16):
parkway Belt way eight. Intersection they're easy to get to
and by right now it's just. Gosh you walk in
in the color color color color, everywhere just, gorgeous, gorgeous.
GORGEOUS i picked up a couple of the. Hibiscus one
of my favorite series of hibiscus are called The Cajun
Hibiscus cajun, series and it's just the. Colors the colors
(01:23:39):
are LIKE i don't even know what the name of
that color, is but it is, gorgeous, right and flowers
with multiple colors in. Them as you go from the,
outside the pedal. Stands that's WHY i Like Cajun hibiscus so.
Much but they've got a great selection there AT, rcw
that is for. Sure if you are wanting to get some,
compost top dressing and core aeration done on your lawn
(01:24:02):
and you were kind of in the southwest parts Of, houston,
WELL BnB Turf pros is the company that you need
to know. About. BnB i really enjoy recommending them BECAUSE

Down highway six and all those communities Like Iowa, Colonies, Siena, Arcola, Fresno,
(01:25:12):
manville they cover that whole region and then on up
over To pearland and across The Missouri city in Sugar.
Land that's the. Area here's the. Website there's no end
in the. WEBSITE Bb turfpros dot. COM bb Turf pros dot.
Com here's the number seven one three two three four
fifty five ninety. Eight there CAN i really can think
(01:25:34):
of nothing that you do to the lawn that. Helps
take a compacted, clay a tight clay, soil and a
struggling lawn get, oxygen organic matter and new, health new
invigoration down into the root system like compost top, dressing
along with the core aeration where they pull the plugs
(01:25:55):
out of the ground drop them on the. Surface it,
Works it really does. Work all, right let's go out
To Spring branch and we're going to talk To. Judy, Hello,
Judy welcome to Garden. Line.
Speaker 9 (01:26:05):
Hi.
Speaker 18 (01:26:06):
THANKS i emailed you some pictures of my tree that
has these barnacle looking black things growing on the. Trunk
AND i also saw that at the bottom in the
grass are bits of what looks like shredded, wood And
(01:26:28):
i'm wondering what that's all.
Speaker 2 (01:26:29):
ABOUT i saw that shredded, wood AND i have no
idea if you pick them up or they really would
are they?
Speaker 19 (01:26:38):
On?
Speaker 18 (01:26:40):
Yes but LIKE i, said it. Shredded my friends thought
it was, grass but it's not. Grass it's shredded.
Speaker 2 (01:26:47):
Wood, no it looks like, that and its interior wood
because it's the color of. It it doesn't it's not
what a borer would send. Out it's not sawdust from a.
BORER i don't anything that would. SHRED i mean it's
like someone took a chainsaw or something to. It, yeah
(01:27:08):
you got me stumped on that. One maybe a close
up of some of those, pieces but it's coming from,
somewhere so you ought to be able to look up
and it is. WOOD i don't know on. That that's a.
Speaker 18 (01:27:19):
Mystery what about those barnuts the black?
Speaker 2 (01:27:25):
Yeah are are those are growths on the side of the.
Tree that one of two. Things my first guess is
it looks like little dried mushroom fruiting structures that came
out of wounds on the. Tree the pictures at a
distance WHERE i can't really see. Good but sometimes you
get a little growth that comes out and then it
(01:27:46):
sort of drives and dies right. There it might be.
That another thing is there are some some kinker type
diseases that can occur that you get that sort of
little growth that comes out of the, tree and that's a.
POSSIBILITY i will say, this AND i know you know
you don't want to lose the tree you, Have but
(01:28:06):
that is a sweet gum or a poplar. ONE i can't,
tell not sweet. Gum i'm, Sorry, god tallow tree are
a Popular do you know offhand which of the two it? Is,
NO i, Don't, Okay well it's. Not those trees run
into problems over, time and this, tree looking at the
(01:28:31):
thinness of the canopy and all the issues up and
down the, TRUNK i think at least put into your
considerations just removing it and putting in a, stronger longer
lived species in its place for the long. Term AND
i realize the reason someone wouldn't want to do. That
but that tree has a lot of things going. On
(01:28:52):
there's no spray for those what you described as barnacle looking,
things there's no treatment for, that AND i suspect there's
going to be some interior would. Decay there's several places
where branches have been removed in the past THAT i
suspect you've got some decay down into the interior On, so,
Yeah i'm the bear of bad news. TODAY i, Know,
(01:29:13):
judy but that's the BEST i can tell you. There
i'd have to be on site to really see more on.
Speaker 20 (01:29:20):
This.
Speaker 18 (01:29:21):
Okay, well on one other, QUESTION i put down some
sod the other.
Speaker 2 (01:29:27):
Day how often.
Speaker 18 (01:29:28):
SHOULD i be watering? It i'm watering it twice a?
Day now is that too?
Speaker 2 (01:29:32):
Much, yeah twice a. Day after a, week go to
once a, day and after another week you can go
to twice a. Week, Okay i'm up against a heard.
Break i'm gonna have to, run but twice a day
for a, week once a day for a, week and
then every two twice a week after. That thank, you,
man appreciate your. Call all, right, folks welcome back To.
(01:29:53):
Guardline good have you with. Us if you are doing
any houseplant, repotting AND i would recommend you consider, that
take a look at your. Houseplants did They you, know
is the, plant let's, say more than twice as big
as the, pot or certainly more than three times as
wide as the, Pot it's probably time to go ahead
(01:30:14):
and replant that or repot that, plant get it up
into a bigger. Pot when you, do you want a quality.
Mix and Jungle land From nitropos is a water saving
potting soil mix with crystals in it that swell up
whole water so that even when the mix dries, out
there's a little latent moisture in there for those roots
to be able to get to keep that plant from
(01:30:36):
going in. Distress it's a quality. Mix it drains, well
but it does hold that moisture that's. Needed and whether
you're putting in a brand new plant or whether you're
just bumping one up from a smaller sized pot to
a bigger, Pot Jungle lands a great product to use for.
That and you can Find nitrofosh products at many. PLACES
A sardware ON cinca ranch On Mason road out there
(01:30:57):
In katie Aspose ace in The woodens On kirkandall be
another good. One for. Example how About Langham Creek case
which is ON fm five twenty nine right there in
The copperfield, area just south of the Big Old Community
center or Big Community center that's up there in that. Area,
Anyway Langham creek just redid their, store by the, way
(01:31:19):
it looks really. Good you need to go by there
and check that. Out you're listening To Garden. Line i'm your,
Host Skip, richtor and we're about to go out To
conroe now and talk To. Bill, Hello, Bill welcome to Garden.
Speaker 12 (01:31:29):
Line, hey good, Morning. Skip my question is product like,
iron product minerals like iron and self and, whatnot particularly,
iron because that seems to be. Going so how often
do you do those in the law and how often
and ken you or should you do those in the?
Speaker 2 (01:31:49):
Garden, yeah good. Question you basically are doing them as
needed based on. Symptoms primarily that's the primary reason that
another's iron is in two. Forms one is, keylated which
means that the iron molecule has a protective claw around.
It if you, will like picture grabbing a tennis ball
(01:32:11):
in your hand and your fingers are a claw around
that tennis. Ball, well the kelated iron basically has a
little bodyguard that keeps the soil from tying it. Up
even if you have yellow plants due to iron, deficiency
you probably have iron in the. Soil it's just not
available and the keylate helps hold its availability over, time
so you don't have to reapply iron so often and
(01:32:34):
it works. Better if it's not a kelated. Form you
may do it in small amounts here and, there but
if the pH is, high if the phosphorus is, high
and if you've been running into iron. Deficiencies when you
put iron, down it's going to end up in the
same place as the iron you already, have so it
small amounts. Periodically typically in a, lawn you're gonna see
(01:32:56):
iron deficiency in the spring when it's a little, cooler
a little more, oyster and you see that, deficiency and
then it tends to grow itself out of that as
the soil warms up and microbial activity kicks into a higher.
Gear so there's not a you need to iron every
two months kind of. Answer there's just a watch your
lawn and if you see, problems do. That as you
(01:33:18):
build the soil with you, know everything from, composts top
dressing and narration to use of humates and other products like,
that you tend to see less and less iron problems
as time goes.
Speaker 12 (01:33:30):
On what should the pH of the lawn be or
which is there a TARGET i should be thinking.
Speaker 2 (01:33:36):
About turf is pretty. Flexible you, know you wouldn't want
to be down five point five in acidic range a
bit anywhere from six on. Up i've seen it seven
point five still looking pretty. Good if you get up
above seven point five into the eighth you're probably going
to see more iron deficiency. There but AGAIN i don't
want to overcomplicate it the, answer but phosphorus levels being too,
(01:33:59):
HOT i can can make that much. Worse and that's
why our turf fertilizers typically have a three one two
with the phosphors being the one or a four one
two ratio a fertilizer of nutrients in, Them so avoid excessive,
phosphorus or some products don't have any, phosphorus and that's
(01:34:21):
probably fine friends as.
Speaker 12 (01:34:22):
Well, okay all, right, good thanks thanks a.
Speaker 2 (01:34:26):

loaded up with things like The Peggy martin rose that
everybody's raving about right. Now that's such a gardious. Rose
horay always has a really good selection of, trees lots
(01:36:40):
of trees and fruit. Trees he is loaded with fruit
trees right. Now i'm talking about like pear, trees peach,
trees plum, trees apple, trees, apricots, figs, blueberries, blackberries low, quat.
MULBERRY i, mean DO i need to go? On, OKAY i.
Will how about, citrus lots of different kinds of citrus as.
Well uh and, uh you, know he keeps a good

plants and, vegetables he has those that come. Through. Uh
and he's got a nice selection too of one of
my favorite plants and it's it's The Confederate star. Jasmine. Uh,
oh that is a vine that is evergreen and it
(01:37:24):

or a, structure and it produces white flowers that are.
Heavenly the scent is. Unbelievable and where he's got them
right there In Alvin Elizabeth street And Alvin Jorges Hidden
gardens and you go check him. Out let's go To
magnolia now and we're gonna talk To. Mike, Hey, mike
(01:37:46):
welcome to Garden.
Speaker 7 (01:37:47):
Line how are you doing? Today SO i GOT i
got two questions for. You actually one is one Is
i'll watch the. Bonus i'll watched some bonus. Eggs, uh
wheat feed and WHAT i put it Out it says
on a pack HEAs watered. Immediately AND i did. That
it don't seem like it really worked that. Good but
WHEN i google, it it says wait twenty four hours before.
(01:38:09):
Watering that's my first.
Speaker 2 (01:38:10):
Question, WELL i don't have that label in front of.
ME i believe that's an atrozine, product and that would
just be a primarily a pre. Emergent it has some
post emergent activity on, it but you want to be
really careful with. That the atrozine in that can cause
problems for your other. Plants and it can wash, off
(01:38:31):
and it's a you, know it kills, weeds but it's
one that people can get themselves in trouble, with so
be real, careful don't ever over reply. It, okay.
Speaker 7 (01:38:41):
Okay and then my other question is what's a good,
round all around. Fertilizer somebody told me some stuff CALLED
i believe it's thirteen thirteen.
Speaker 2 (01:38:49):
Thirteen, yeah people have talked about that for, years but
it's not what you need to be. Using what are
you going to. Fertilize we're talking about lawns every.
Speaker 7 (01:38:58):
Talking About, yeah list of, line just the, yard try to,
notice get it, green get it fertilized and all.
Speaker 2 (01:39:05):
That if you're looking for something that's kind of an immediate,
release it gives you a gradual release over. Time Nelson
Plant food has something Called Bruce's, brew and so you
get a quick green up from it and then it
continues to feed a little bit for a pretty good,
while and so that would be. GOOD i would use
(01:39:26):
that in vegetable gardens. TOO i mean it's a good
product with the right amount of. Nitrogen of, Course nitropos
has their products as, well from The, imperial which is
their orange red bag which meats releases immediately to their silver,
bag which is Super, turf and that releases gradually over.
Time so you've got a lot of good.
Speaker 7 (01:39:48):
Options, Okay and where do you buy? That At lows
or somewhere OR.
Speaker 2 (01:39:54):
I would you know you are up in The magnolia.
Area go to your LOCAL ace hardware. Stores that's probably
where you're gonna. Find that's probably gonna be the easiest
way to get. To and let me let me just
look here a. SECOND i THINK i may have. TRY
i think You, magnolia who is up?
Speaker 8 (01:40:10):
There?
Speaker 2 (01:40:11):
Oh All star is ON fm fourteen eighty. Eight all,
sorry All, Star, yeah M magnolia on fourteen eighty. Eight,
uh they're they're probably your closest one and they tend
to carry these. Products, okay question in The magnolia. Area all,
Right i'll do. That all, right you take care Of
(01:40:35):
thanks a, lot appreciate the, Call, mike.
Speaker 8 (01:40:39):
You.
Speaker 2 (01:40:39):
Bet. Uh microlife, products that's another ONE i should have
thrown out there as. Well microlife has got some awesome.
PRODUCTS i was talking about their their green, bag the
sixty four that they have out. There that's an awesome plant.
Food i've used it in my. Lawns IT'S i use
it in other places. Too by the, way it's. Excellent
you can go to Micro Life fertilizer, though and find
(01:41:00):
out about other. THINGS i want to talk. About The
biomatrix that's an orange label seven to one three liquid
comes in quartz and, gallons and The Ocean harvest that's
a blue label for two three. Liquid both are, Great
both support good plant, Growth both have good ratios of
the nutrients. There AND i use The biomatrix indoors and
(01:41:22):
outdoors the orange. ONE i use The Ocean harvest outdoors
primarily the blue. One either way you. Go you got
a liquid product that is not gonna burn your. Plants
you can fold your feed with, it you can spray
it on the, ground you can. DRINK i would drench
it into the soil around the, plants and you're gonna have.
Success and you can Find microlife everywhere. Everywhere it's just
(01:41:42):
all over the. Place, well uh, See i'm Gonna i've

help you. With come on, out let's meet love to
meet people that listen To Garden. Line we'll be right.
Back welcome back to The Garden. Line so glad we
have you with. Us IS i got a rock and
robin at my house And i'm not making that. Up
in the, MORNING i get up, early of, course for the,
show And i'm sitting there with a cup of coffee
(01:42:49):
trying to get my eyes open one at a, time and,
inevitably while it's still dark, outside there's this robin outside
my door and he starts his he or she starts
to sing to do their little. Thing AND i just
advoiced been kind of, like don't you know birds don't
wake up quite this? Early but, anyway not that. Bird
rock And, rob all, right we are going to head
(01:43:10):
straight out to myreland and talk To andrew this. Segment Hey,
andrew welcome to Garden. Line good, Morning. Skip how are?
You i'm doing? Well thank you.
Speaker 21 (01:43:22):
GOOD i have live old, questions live Old greek question
to have to open asking IS i HAVE i called
sucker limbs coming out on the three. LIMPS i trimmed
all of them all In, january and they have come
back already.
Speaker 2 (01:43:44):
Off the off the trunks AND i mean the, branches
you mean the.
Speaker 21 (01:43:47):
Branches, yeah, okay all. Right is that just the THING
i have to live with or is there a way
to to not have them come back out?
Speaker 2 (01:43:57):
There, well as you stay on, it it becomes a
little less of a. Problem whenever you cut off a,
branch especially larger, branches that you're removing a lot of
flow that was, going you, know from the trunk or
the main branch to that other branch right going through,
(01:44:17):
there and so all the little latent buds that are
around there just take off growing to replace what you,
removed and as you settle that down by printing them
back and printing them back and keep it prone, back
it'll generally settle down on the branches and not be so.
Bad there is a product called sucker stopper sucker, stopper
and it basically is a plant hormone that overrides that
(01:44:40):
natural system and, says you, know, hey don't send up
a sucker or water sprout type shoot right, here and
you might want to try. That that would be applied
follow the, label but applied promptly at a pruning time
to that wounded, area and that ought to help suppress
some for, You. Okay and then the other question is.
Speaker 21 (01:45:05):
Coming up out of the trunk of the tree On Neighbor,
street right on the fence slide on my, SIDE i
have like shoots that are coming up out of the.
Speaker 2 (01:45:13):
Roots, Okay so they're not coming from the base of the.
Trunk they're coming out of the soil from off The
what you feel like is the root, SYSTEM i tell
you a little bit of boat. Okay, well so it
could be one or two. Things it one thing it
can be is acorns sprouting a lot of times under.
(01:45:35):
Trees you, know the acorns have landed and they'll sprout
and you get these little ceilings coming. Up the other
thing is what you're, describing and that is the the root.
Suckers the typical southern coastal live oak does not roots
sucker very. Bad the live oaks that are from seed,
strains like In Central. Texas you drive west Of austin
(01:45:57):
or even you Know quero direction and you hit out
that way more you start to see mott forming live,
oaks the ones where there's a whole group of trunks
out in a pasture, together and those are kinds that
do root sucker. More and it's the, same they're both live.
Oaks it's just a little genetic difference between regions. There
(01:46:20):
and so when you plant a tree in your, yard
if it came from a seed source Like Central, texas
you're probably gonna have more of the root suckers than the.
Other but what can you do about? It once you have?
It all you can do is go down in the, ground,
excavate you, know down cut those off as close as you,
can and, again the sucker stopper probably will help suppress that,
(01:46:41):
sum at least for a period of. TIME i have
known people to put a shade cloth or not a shade,
cloth a ground cloth over the, ground a real thick,
one and then weigh it down with something, rocks, gravel,
whatever and that they can't push up through. That and
that's another way to kind of suppress that suckering little.
Bit but there's only certain situations where that would be
(01:47:03):
esthetically or practically.
Speaker 21 (01:47:05):
Acceptable, okay WELL i will find get something super stuff seat.
Speaker 2 (01:47:14):
MARKET i appreciate. That all, right all, right good luck with.
That appreciate, that thank.
Speaker 9 (01:47:19):
You.
Speaker 2 (01:47:20):
Yep that is an interesting fun. Fact that's so fun
fact about those Line OAKS A cethlers fertilizer is a

Hi Hi.
Speaker 9 (01:53:05):
SKIP i have a couple of questions about my azalias and.
Chamelleas we we after the azilias finished, blooming we did
trim them, back and now when DO i fertilize.
Speaker 2 (01:53:18):
It you can do it right. Now you can fertilize,
them you, know it's not just like you do it one.
Time you can fertilize them periodically through the. Season you
want to use a product for acid loving, plants acid loving, Plants,
okay that's.
Speaker 9 (01:53:33):
Important and so so how how often do you think
THAT i should put the fertilizer.
Speaker 2 (01:53:40):
ON i would say, probably depending on how much you
apply and what kind of fertilizer you, USE i would
probably do it about every six to eight weeks to push.
Growth the. Law, now if you're if your cats are
already a good size and they love good and, everything
you don't have to do. There some people don't fertilize,
(01:54:01):
them but once a, year you, know, okay small amounts,
gradually but a good acid living, product you, Know microlife
has there acid of, fire the six two. Four it's
a red bag. Cidafier so it's good for, camillias, roses
lots of different kinds of.
Speaker 9 (01:54:16):
Points so the same thing THAT i put on my
azalea is okay to put on my.
Speaker 1 (01:54:19):
Camellia uh, yes absolutely, Absolutely and anything that likes a
little bit uh a lower levels of pH so that
would be, azilias, blueberries, gardenias, hydrangeas and even. Roses they
(01:54:42):
roses don't need acid sal but they like the pH
a little lower rather than.
Speaker 9 (01:54:46):
High, OKAY i have one quick question on my. ALIAS
i was really looking at the blossoms after they had fallen.
Off do they make a little seed on the end
of the?
Speaker 2 (01:54:58):
Pistol generally, Not, no not on the end of the.
Pistol if there's a, seed it would be down in
the in the base of the, pistol down at the.
Speaker 9 (01:55:08):
Battle, okay one long thing left from the. Blossom this
one long, thing and the whole blossom is, gone and
it looks like little tiny seeds on the. End AND
i was just curious about.
Speaker 2 (01:55:20):
Toat oh that's. Interesting, NO i. HAVEN'T i. HAVEN'T i
don't quite picture what you're showing describing that's. Interesting, well,
okay good luck with a beautiful patch of azalias out.
There that's quite the, plant isn't. It you? Bet, thanks

yard and you have to order three cubic three supersacks for.
Delivery that's a minimum because you know they're driving big

just do it for one. Supersacked but, anyway you can
do it that way as. Well while you're there or
while you're online looking at, it AND i hope you'll go.
(01:59:19):
Online the website is airloomsoils dot com airlomsoils dot. Com

on flour. BED i want it three inches deep or
seven inches deep or eight inches deep or you know.
Whatever you put in your measurements and it tells you
how much you, need and that makes it really. Easy
(01:59:40):
it also has many other variations on how to convert to,
buckets five gum buckets or. Whatnot it's a great it's
a great. Thing you'll see the soils there and you'll
see things like a soil for cactine succulents by the,
bag or a potting soil by the, bag indoor potting.
Soil you'll see things like like The rosenbloomers blend that
(02:00:02):
soil is good for pretty much, anything especially things that.

to type out all the answers to every email that
would come in through the. Week but send me an.
(02:01:51):
Email send me. Photos make sure they're. Good sharp. Focus
good sharp focus is. Important close up when you can
a good close up is often. Important you, know If
i'm seeing something from twenty feet away and it's the
size of a, Quarter i'm not gonna be able to
help you. Much so good good, photos and when you,
can please attach them rather than embed them in the.
Text and you're Thinking, okay what does that? Mean, well
(02:02:12):
when you write an, email you can paste into the
text a. Photo, okay but it's more tedious for me
to get it open and check it, out and with
a short amount of time on the air to be
able to do. That so if you just attach, it
use the paper, clip there's a little paper club bike.
ON i can pop those open real fast and still
have your. Email and because some photos just go way
off the page or way bigger than the. Email, anyway
(02:02:34):
that would all be, hopeful appreciate that very. Much arbrogate
is your garden center up there in The tomba, area
AND i know you've. Been everybody in town knows About.
Arbrogate arbrogate's been around a good, while and, boy from the,
beginning it's just been a. Destination it's fun to go.
There if you have friends that they're not even plant,
(02:02:54):
people let them go To arbrogate and see what they
come home. With from that front, porch it is just
decorated with all kinds of cool. Landscape blame to the gift,
shops yes there's more than. One to the gorgeous pottery
that's right out there in, front to all the, plants beautiful,
roses beautiful house, plants things for, shade things for, sun, annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruit, trees,
(02:03:17):
yes fruit year, round by the. Way fruit not just, trees, tree,
shrubs of mines and. Bushes they have got it all
there At. Arburgate and when you go To, arbigate you
know you're going to get expert advice people that will
take time to walk. Through they don't just, go, oh
you want, that, well it's way over there and like
you got to go find it because they don't. Care
they do. Care and if you go in with a
(02:03:38):
question and you, say, HEY i need some. HELP i
need to put together a group of. Plants it would
look good in a flower. BED i want it to
be colored AND i wanted to be in the. Summer
and here's how much SUN i. Get they'll work with
you on, that and that is so. Important that is
the beauty of a quality independent garden center Like arbrogate
that you just can't find in most. Places you just,
can't and you're gonna. Get if you're not a, gardener
(02:04:01):
you will become a gardener when you walk Into arbrogate
because they're enthusiastic about what they. Do they're knowledgeable and
whatever kind of garden you want to, have they can do.
That they can help you make. That now they have
their one two three easy. System remember bronze stuff before green,
stuff the food that feeds anything with. Roots it is
an organic, fertilizer includes calcium in it, too by the,
(02:04:22):
way a soil for pretty much any. Application and then
a compost that improves any in all. Soil and both
the soil and composts have expanded shale in, them which
helps our clay, soils very important for longer term benefit
to the. Clay and both are available by. Bulk yeah
you heard that. Right if you want to get the
one two three, system and you want it in big
bulk order so you're not buying ten thousand, bags call,
(02:04:46):
them tell them about. It they'll deliver arbrogates a mile
and a half west of two forty nine on twenty
nine to, twenty just west Of. Tumbull AND i promise you.
This if you go by, there you have the time
of your. Life today would be a good day to go.
To by the, way, Way let's set out To, Kline
texas or a client area and tuck to Doug. Hey
doug har are things up in the clin. Area, great good, Morning.
Speaker 10 (02:05:10):
Skip, HEY i have A Mountain laurel that is dropping.
Speaker 2 (02:05:14):
LEAVES i sent you some.
Speaker 9 (02:05:16):
PICTURES i don't the tree looks.
Speaker 17 (02:05:20):
Good i've looked inside the tree to see if there's.
Speaker 2 (02:05:23):
INSECTS i can't see. Anything, well what's your. ADVICE i
don't see any problems on your. Plant evergreens they may
be green all, year but leaves don't live. Forever and
typically when we get into, spring a lot of evergreens
will shed old leaves to put as they put on
(02:05:46):
their new. Ones it happens to southern, magnolias it happens
to live, oaks and it can happen to a lot
of different kinds of. Plants if your plant goes through
a period where the water so moisture content is, off
and then maybe it got a little dry and then
it got, wet or maybe you, know just some fluctuation like,
that sometimes you'll see older leaves that drop. Off but
(02:06:08):
What i'm seeing on your plant is the new leaves
still look. Good and it is those older leaves that
are coming, off and you, know they've served their, Time
they've done their. Thing now they're very deeper into the
canopy of the. Plant they're not getting the light that
maybe some of the other leaves will. Get and it's
just part of the natural. Cycle now from WHAT i
can see in the, Photos i'm not. Concerned. Okay and
(02:06:33):
what about fertilizing that? Plant what different times of the.
YEAR i would do it in the. Spring that'd be
a good time because it's starting to put on the new.
Growth if you really are wanting to make it grow really,
fast you can fertilize it again into the middle part
of summer or something like. That MAYBE i don't Know.
(02:06:54):
JULY i would stop fertilizing by the time you get Into,
august because that'll carry you on through enough and you
don't want to push it right before we go into winter.
TIME i would get a lawn, fertilizer whatever you use
on your, lawn as long as it doesn't have herbicide in.
It go to the base of that trunk and see
(02:07:15):
how wide it. Is you, know our thumbs are roughly
an inch. Wide how many thumb withs? Across so let's
just Say i'm guessing, Here but let's just say it's
gonna be bigger than a. Cocin but let's say it's
the size of a soft drink. Can that's about three inches.
Across for every, inch for every thumb, across give it
one or two cups of lawn. Fertilizer. Okay so if
(02:07:36):
That's i'm going to again make a wild, Guess i'm
going to say that's a four inch, trunk and this
me looking from across the yard at the. Trunk if
it's about a four inch, trunk that would oh eight, Across, Okay,
well then it would get eight eight to sixteen cups a. Fertilizer,
now if it's as a synthetic salt based, fertilizer a
(02:07:56):
pint is about a, pound, Okay so for every for let's,
say if it's if it is eight, inches you're gonna give,
it that would be eight. Cups that is four pints
two quartz, okay a. Fertilizer so that would be about
two quarts of. Fertilizer spread it in the area as
(02:08:16):
wide as the whole, branch spread of the, tree and watered,
in scratching into the mulch there in the. Bed so you,
know so you get it, down watered in really, good
and it'll be good to. Go that tree has also
got roots out in your, lawn and your lawn's nice and,
green so it's getting nutrients that are out there as. Well,
okay all, right Thanks, SKIP i appreciate your. Help all,
(02:08:37):
right you, bet thanks for. That good luck with. That
Houston Powder coats is the biggest powder coader in the.
Region and if you know what powder coating, is powder
coating is a process where they apply a very very,
hard colorful material to the surface of the. Metal now
WHEN i say, Colorful i'm talking about a hundred different
(02:08:59):
color options actually more than that that they. Offer so
if you want you, know primary red or blue or,
green they can do. That if you want something that
looks almost like, rusty kind of a you, know an
orangey rusty. Color you like that, look but you don't
want something to be rusty out there to sit. On
they can powder coat it to look like. That and
they can do cast, iron they can do wrot, iron
(02:09:20):

it shows its, head you you, know get a spade
up there and really lift that soil. Up so because
if you pull on, it those things snap. Off they're
just like a little soft asparagus. SPROUTS i, mean they
(02:13:30):
just snap right, off and you're you're going to leave
it in the. Ground it'll come right back. Up it's
a good resilient. Plan as you. Know one doesn't need
us to pamper. It but when YOU i always tell
people that In Purple, heart when you plan, it make
sure and plan it where you want, it because it's
going to be.
Speaker 20 (02:13:44):
There.
Speaker 2 (02:13:45):
YEAH i did at.
Speaker 21 (02:13:46):
One time want it, there but this is just pictures
AFTER i had pulled.
Speaker 22 (02:13:51):
It SO i did the wrong thing AND i had pulled,
it So i'm.
Speaker 2 (02:13:56):
DEALING i, know and, well and you'll get. Them it's there,
actually like rhizomes, underground like mint spreads that way. Too of,
Course fortunately wondering jew and purple heart don't spread like
as fast as mint, does but they do spread. Underground
but that's a pretty plant. Too but, anyway that that's
what you're gonna have to.
Speaker 8 (02:14:16):
Do.
Speaker 2 (02:14:16):
Sprays you, know technically it's closer related to grass than
the broad, leaves but they're just not a good spray
that does a good. Job and you've got other things in,
there like your loriope that you probably don't want to.
Kill SO i would just do the, digging all. Right
tricle here is the same. Thing it's gonna kill the
other plants, too, uh tricle pier on. LORIOPY i don't.
(02:14:43):
Know i'd have to check the label on that way,
Also So i'm afraid to kill.
Speaker 21 (02:14:49):
Them the.
Speaker 2 (02:14:49):
Roses, yeah, Yeah well it's not that hard to, dig you,
know if you get you get the soil a little
soft with some moist and. Soft you just just allowed
some time for you to get in there and pull
all out that you, can and you're going to get
ninety percent of it if you're real careful with. It
and then when the ten percent sprouts and you do it,
again there's gonna be very little for probably a third
(02:15:11):
dig that'll be a much, faster easier. Dig, Alrighty i'll
dig it. Out uh. Huh all, right there you. Go Thanks,
dave appreciate the. Call you take. Care bye. Bye all,
right there you go our phone number seven one three
two one TWO ktrh seven one three two one TWO.
(02:15:32):
Ktrh Nelson Plant food has a lot of. Products you,
know they got the Turf star. Line i've been talking
about that this, morning but the Nutri star line is
also really. Awesome And nutristar is basically a group of
fertilizers that are for specific plants or specific types of.
Plants so whatever you're wanting to, grow there's probably a
(02:15:54):
Nutri star designed for that kind of. Plant And Nelson
Plant food is always quality. Products he come in. Jars
by the, way These Nutra star lines of, products you,
know they have a new star for vegetable. Gardens they
have A Nutral star for acid loving plants Like. Azalea's
they've got nutral stars for things like hibiscus for, example the,
plumeria and many. Others one THING i like about These
(02:16:16):
nelson jars is there's about a dozen places around town
where many of their products are you can reload the,
jar you, know when you finish, it just like you
go to the store and you pull the lever and
get peanuts out of that little contraption on the wall
the grocery. Store, well you can do that With Nelson
Plant foods in the. Jars many of the products in the,
(02:16:36):
jar so that makes it really. Nice and then they've
Got Color. Star there's a Standard Color. Star it is
sold really across The United. States people find out about
Us Sung dean the other day and somebody in some
other state had just discovered. It they had a little,
sample they tried it and they, go, gosh, yes send
me some more of that stuff because they it. Works
and now they have a Color. Star, well they have
(02:16:57):
had a Color star that has a side in it
to help fight some of the diseases the plants. Have
so you're doing the fertilizing and the disease management at
the same. Time all these are good, products as all
products From Nelson plant Food they have a good line
of products widely available in The Greater houston. Area we're
gonna go to the phone now and talk To sue
(02:17:18):
out In Bay. Cleft, Hey, sue welcome to garden.
Speaker 4 (02:17:22):
Line good, Morning. SKIP i hope you're doing well.
Speaker 2 (02:17:26):
Today doing, well thank. YOU i have a big.
Speaker 4 (02:17:32):
TREE i have a fig tree THAT i don't know
what's going on with. It it did it last, year
but towards the end of the. Summer BUT i don't
see any bugs or anything on.
Speaker 14 (02:17:44):
It and.
Speaker 4 (02:17:46):
It's like it kind of starts out with the bottom
of the leaf turning a goldish color and then it
spreads to the. Top AND i said THE.
Speaker 7 (02:17:57):
PA i don't.
Speaker 4 (02:18:00):
KNOW I i can't find.
Speaker 2 (02:18:03):
Anything, well it could, be it could be more than one.
Thing the interesting thing about it is where it's happening
on the. Leaf it's not all over the. Leaf it's
like in this, case it's on pretty much on half the.
Leaf and diseases don't know where one side or the other.
Is they're very random in the way they attack a.
Plant and so one disease that looks somewhat like that
(02:18:27):
is called fig. Rust but fig rust typically isn't that
this bad this. Early So i'm doubting that it's, rust
but it could. BE i think it's something else going on,
there AND i don't. Know in one of your, photos
it's like that part of the leaf seems to get
a little more sunshine than the other. Part so the
(02:18:47):
way the shade, IS i don't know if that's. IT
i don't know if it's The we had some kind
of cold weather the other day and a lot of
plants were suffering from. IT i DIDN'T i wouldn't think
figs would have been hurt by what we. Had but,
anyway something like that's going. On the problem with rust
is we don't have a good fig rust fungicide available
(02:19:08):
on the. Market the people have used sulfur spray products for,
it as long as the temperature is not too hot
that that's an. Option but it's a very weak funge.
Aside uh and SO i generally tell people just when
you see it on a, leaf just pick it, off
and when the leaf looks bad and get rid of.
It rake up the fallen leaves at the end of the.
(02:19:28):
Year but rust comes through the, air so you're not
it's gonna always be.
Speaker 4 (02:19:33):
Around, well, yeah because it it did this last, year
but it was like Late July august when it did.
Speaker 2 (02:19:43):
It, yeah that's that's typical of. RUST i would pick
this leaf. OFF i only see it on one leaf
in the. Photo, oh pick it off for getting. Off,
yeah we'll pick them. Off. Figure, hey figs are vigorous.
Too you'll give a little bit of, fertilizer get some
get that thing. Growing. Some don't overfertilize. It BUT i
(02:20:03):
think that even with loss of, leaves your figs are
going to be productive if you keep them in good,
health which this plant looks in pretty good health right.
Speaker 4 (02:20:11):
Now oh he came back like.
Speaker 2 (02:20:14):
Crazy there you. Go all, Right, Sue, WELL i hope that.
Helps good luck with, that.
Speaker 4 (02:20:21):
AND i think you CAN i use The microlife citrus and.
Speaker 23 (02:20:25):
Fruit that's What i'd be. Excellent, so, yes that would
be excellent. Product all, right thank you appreciate.
Speaker 2 (02:20:37):
That Spring Creek feed is up In magnolia ON fm
twenty nine seventy. Eight that's Near Graham parkway In highway
to forty, nine kind of north in the east direction
from Tom ball up. There they carry the fertilizers you
hear me talk about From, nelson Like, turfstar From, microlife from.
Nitrofoss they have things to control, weeds things to kill
(02:20:57):
existing weeds or prevent, weeds things to control, diseases things
to control. PESTS i always enjoy going in because the
staff is friendly and, courteous you, know like you would
expect from a good quality, store high quality pet food.
Products if you've got backyard, chickens they've got supplies for,
that and they do get in orders of chicks from
time to time up there pretty. Often as a matter of. Fact,
(02:21:20):
OH i wanted to tell you there's an event coming
up On april, seventeenth that's not too far from, now
at six point. THIRTY i love. This it's On, thursday

a call to eight one two five two fifty four
hundred two eight one two five two fifty fifty four,
(02:21:44):
hundred but you got to do it BEFORE i don't

and be part of. That they're gonna have food and
everything for you there At Spring Creek feed And. Magnolia

of things we can visit about. Today i'm gonna head
(02:22:06):
straight to the. Phones we're gonna go to the heights
and talk To. Kristin Hello, Kristin welcome to Garden.
Speaker 19 (02:22:12):
Line good, Morning, skip thank. YOU i have about one
hundred square feet of giant. Ligularia it's, mature it's about
two feet, tall AND i need to move.
Speaker 2 (02:22:23):
It any, Tips, okay dig it up and try to
get as you, know a good amount of the root.
System it is a, perennial so it'll bounce back out
of the soil even at the top dies, back and
get it into its new. Location if you want to
make ligularia. Happy it likes a shady spot with rich
composty soil and even soil. Moisture so when you move,
(02:22:44):
it you're gonna water it in really good and then you,
know don't make it a soggy, bog but keep it
moist with frequent watering because it's it's lost a lot
of its, roots and so we're watering a little more
often just to kind of help it along than. Normal
it gets. Established it's not so quite that. Picky okay
(02:23:06):
about how how deep would you? Dig, well, uh it's
Not you're not going to go very. Deep probably eight
inches or. So you can get most of all you're
you're going to need to get from. It but just you,
know as you put a spading fork around it and
kind of lift it up a little bit or a,
shovel you can get it up out of the. Ground
if you can get a little bit of soil with,
it that's. Fine but when you start moving, soil you
(02:23:28):
start going to the car practor a, lot and we
won't to avoid that if, Possible and So i'm good with.
Speaker 24 (02:23:35):
That, okay all, right, well all, RIGHT i need to
get you to come move stuff at my, house then, no,
seriously if you don't mind lifting the heavy sad, okay,
okay well this is all right whatever, Anyway, yeah, ligularia it's,
uh it's trans it's, movable but don't delay much more
(02:23:57):
because the hotter it, gets you, know the more stress
there is on.
Speaker 2 (02:23:59):
It you may see some of the old leaves wilt
when you move it like. That and don't be too.
Alarmed it'll it'll come back out of the ground long
as you keep the soil moist around. It planet at
the same level it was, before same level as.
Speaker 19 (02:24:12):
Before, Okay SO i KNOW i put some composts.
Speaker 18 (02:24:16):
In that in that grapp, Soil so SHOULD i possibly
get more compost and enrich it?
Speaker 9 (02:24:23):
More?
Speaker 2 (02:24:25):
YEAH i, WOULD i, would just if you want it
to be. HAPPY i, don't you, know not knowing your soil,
type not standing there feeling the soil in my hands
and getting an. Idea it's kind of hard to, say
but it never hurts to add a little more compost
to the, soil especially for a forest loving species Like.
Legularia mm hmm, okay, okay alrighty, great thank, you all,
(02:24:49):
right good luck you bet have fun with. That you take. Care.
Uh Moss nursery is down there In seabrook And MOSS i.

Speaker 22 (02:26:56):
HEYS i want to ask you about A japanese. Maple
we've got a kind of shady area and we're thinking
Either japanese maple or a holly in that.
Speaker 2 (02:27:07):
Area your, THOUGHTS welli likes some, Light, okay, well holly
likes some. Light the benefits of holly is some types produce,
berries not. All there's male and female. Plants when they're,
hollies they have separate male and female so only the
females can produce. Berries but if you get in a
(02:27:29):
lot of, shade the holly isn't as dense as you
might want it to. Be it just depends on how
shady the shade. Is japanese maple is a beautiful, plant
a very unique. Structure it is, deciduous unlike the, holly
so in the winter it's. Bare. Uh The some types
Of japanese maple do better than. Others and you're up
(02:27:50):
there and, tomboil you swing over to, arbigate they're going
to be able to show you the kinds they have
and talk to you about. Them japanese maple wants to
be in a very woodland soil that's. MOIST a little
morning sun is fine or a bright d apple shade
through the day for them to do their. Best but
too much sun and you start to they start to
do tip burn on the leaves and have some other.
(02:28:12):
Issues but either plant for the right, Spot.
Speaker 22 (02:28:17):
Yeah it might be a perfect spot for it's very.
Speaker 2 (02:28:19):
Shady can you kill? Which all? Right? Well can you
tell if a holly is a male or? Female just
about the? BERRIES i don't know another way of doing.
That and you know there's some that it's it's primarily
the burying type that are Sold yopan or native yopon
is a type of, holly and it has separate male
(02:28:40):
and female. Too but there's we have hollies that are very,
compact like The chinese holly with the sharp points on the.
LEAVES i don't know That i've seen one of those with.
Berries i'm sure there are but the KIND i usually
see doesn't have, berries and Then burford's have berries on,
them and some of the other types of taller. Types you,
know you've got a lot of different. Kinds it's a
holly to choose. From, okay all, right all, right, well
(02:29:04):
thanks very. MUCH i appreciate. It joy your, show, you Bet, Ken,

get a little bit of stuff done in your yard
if you'd like to do. That we are getting close
to the end of the. Show it's our last segment
of the. DAY i did want to come back ONE
(02:30:50):
i mentioned, earlier Sweet green this, morning AND i want
to come back to it one more. Time Sweet green
is a product From nitrophoss and it's a very unique.
Fertilizer first of, all it's about eleven percent, nitrogen which
is it's really high for an organic. Product, now it's
made from a molasses tight base and through microbial activity
this is turned into a fertilizer that when you put
(02:31:10):
it down and watered, in it goes into the. Soil and,
microbes especially beneficial, bacteria love. Carbon they love carbon, chains
and sugars are carbon. Chains different sugars are different links
of carbon. Chains, well when you put in the, ground
it simulates the microbes and microbes release the nitrogen from
it and the grass turns. Green it looks good and
(02:31:31):
it smells. Wonderful if you got to carry a fertilizer
in your car for a few, days make it sweet.
Green you love. It every time you get in the
car it smells that. Good night fass products are widely.
Available you're going to find a hiding and feed on
student or. Airline you GOT Rcw nursery WHERE i was at.
Yesterday they carry night foss products there auspose as on
carbondyl up kerkandal up in the woodlands and d defeed and.
(02:31:53):
Tumbole all places you're going to get night fross. Products
we're going to go now to in down in. Grow,
hey n welcome to garden.
Speaker 20 (02:32:01):
Line oh, Hey, Skip i'm calling about my. Altimarouss do
you know What i'm talking? About that, flowers the ultra?
Speaker 2 (02:32:09):
Marius, yes, yes uh huh.
Speaker 20 (02:32:12):
OKAY i had, four four in two gallon. Potts i've
had them a bottom last Last Mother's day and they're.
Thriving they're, beautiful but the wind kind of knocked them,
out you.
Speaker 23 (02:32:24):
Know, yeah, yeah, yeah they're kind of the way they.
Speaker 20 (02:32:28):
Grow, yeah, yeah they, are but they're. Beautiful my husband
we trimmed a tree over a. Patio SHOULD i keep
them in full sun or put them in half and
half son in?
Speaker 2 (02:32:39):
Shade you, know they grow in full sun if you're
like out on The East coast Or West, coast not
In california and. Stuff had a buddy that agerlife extension
used to work out there and breed those. Things BUT
i think, here if you could give a little break
from the brunt of the day that it's fixing to
get pretty rough in the brunt.
Speaker 20 (02:32:57):
Of the day last summer in that in that real hot,
HEAT i did put them in full of, shade but
in the winter they draft and Whitness cole. COMES i
just stick them in the, garage so just kind of
keep them in half and half in and out of the.
Speaker 2 (02:33:12):
Heat, yeah, yeah they need. Light they do need. Light
but you, know it's it's kind of like our oh, gosh.
Geraniums geraniums like. Sun but in the in the, springs
full sun is. Fine but when we get to, summer
my geraniums go to a late day, shade half day
(02:33:33):
sun to kind of make the happy point Between i'm
not frying in the sun and Yet i'm getting enough.
Light SO i think this will be the.
Speaker 20 (02:33:42):
Same, alrighty all, right that's. Wonderful, okay have.
Speaker 2 (02:33:46):
A great an you, Too. Mann thanks for your. CALL
i appreciate that very very. Much let's go to the
galleya now and talk To Terry. Sue, Hey Terry, Sue
welcome To Gardline.
Speaker 4 (02:33:58):
Hip it's carry sew with a, cane not a cheese.
Speaker 2 (02:34:02):
Car, alright, well sorry for. That sorry About that's.
Speaker 25 (02:34:07):
Okay SO i have several areas WHERE i worked with
soil and it's got composts down, below and THEN i
sprinkled some real, soil better, soil and, ANYWAY i planted.
Seedlings it's a mixed flour, mix and, okay how DO
(02:34:30):
i how DO i mulch those or any kind of
seedlings planted, Seeds and then there's.
Speaker 2 (02:34:35):
Yeah it's it's really hard to. Do you. Know mulches
come in different, sizes from just a fine textured compost
can be used as a mulch to real chunky. Stuff
and so when you got little, seedlings you can't use
the chunky stuff because you can't get a good thick
mulch to block the sunlight from the soil without making
that thick enough to where it's not good for your.
(02:34:57):
Seedlings SO i would USE i would get some comp
post or some kind of material like that and just
sprinkle it over the. Surface if you can get about
a maybe a half inch of it or a little
more over the soil, surface even an, inch it will
it will keep the weeds. Down and as the ceilings come,
up then you can move in with a little more multi,
moults you, know something a little bit chunkier if you want. To, okay,
(02:35:21):
okay thank. You, yeah what you. Know you know WHAT
i do in my yard is WHEN i get leaves
for trees and leaves and, Stuff i'll mom over with
a lawnmower and catch them in a, bagger And i'll
do that two or three, times And i'll chop them
up so they're hardly the size of your, fingernails you,
know the little leaves are all chopped. Up and then
that makes a really good multch to go around little
things like, that because you can put it just thick. Enough,
(02:35:44):
Uh and then you can go with your store bought
stuff later if you. Want, okay alrighty sounds very time.
Soon all, right all, right all, Right, casey thank, you
thank you for the. Call appreciate. That okay you take.
Care Quality Home products Of texas is a company THAT
(02:36:06):
i really like to speak. For and here's. Why for.
Me you know, what WHEN i go anywhere or hire
anyone to do, ANYTHING i want something that works very,
well BUT i want. SERVICE i want to know That
i'm not just being sold something because they're trying to
get rid of. IT i want to know That i'm
(02:36:27):
getting the thing that is best for WHAT i, need
and that they're going to stop and listen and ask
the questions and do. That and THEN i want to
know that what they tell me is. True and THEN
i want to know are they going to take care
of me after the. Sale if there's any, problems IF
i need, anything are they going to take care of
me after the? Sale AND i bet you feel that way.
Too And Quality Home products Of texas is that then
(02:36:49):
you buy generators a lot of, places there's no question about.
That but it's not just the. Item it's an item
that's a quality, item like A generaic automatic standby. Generator
that means it comes on when the power goes. Off
you don't have to go turn it, on but it
means one that fits your, house that fits what you.
Need are you just trying to keep the freezer from
(02:37:11):
thought out and ruining all the? Food do you need
to run central air? Units you?
Speaker 3 (02:37:17):
Know?
Speaker 2 (02:37:17):
What do you need to keep your house? Going they
take time to do. That they also walk you through
the whole process from picking out the one that works for. You,
well then you've got to get certain permits to put
certain kinds of generators out. There your city may have
some our neighborhood. WHATEVER i don't understand that, world but
there are those. Things but you don't have to do.
(02:37:37):
That Quality home takes care Of they know how to do.
That they take care of it for, you so you
don't have to worry about. That and then it comes
to putting the generator beside your. House are you going
to get some little prefab slab and drop it on
the ground so your lawnmar bumps it and knocks it
all around like some. Do or are you going to
have somebody pour you a nice thick slab that'll stay
