have that and then use that as a model to

Anyone in your family had any kind of entertainment.

A bug like that as well, Not in my immediate family,
but my extended family. Ironically, they actually produced the movie Friday.

So are you related to Pat or I'm related to Michael. Yeah,
Michael is. Pat is Michael's wife. But I didn't get
it that my parents didn't let me watch it. So
I was like everybody in my school was like Friday, Friday, Friday,
like that's my oo. And I didn't get to watch
it till like I snuck around and watching in high school.

It was so was it a strict household that you
grew up?

Speaker 3 (01:20):
My mom was always like, you can't watch PG thirteen movies.
So thirteen, you can't watch better our movies till you's seventeen.
It was embarrassing, So I used to always have to
sneak to go to them.

Did you ever tell your mom like you you stunted
my craft? That damnit get out of my house room.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
Then at an early age, you do want to have
like a place to stay. I didn't have any money.
I didn't have any But it's.

Crazy how we when we look in the rear view mirror,
how we say, oh, you know, it's almost like that

you kind of like, oh, yeah, that's what all that meant,
That's why we're doing it. Even things that we weren't
getting paid for or whatever, but you just you just
was learning on on the way. And even when you
say to Mo, we should take you know, you're probably
just a kid that's going to go see that. And

is just meant for your your path.

Well yeah, but writing early on at eleven, even if
you say it wasn't the greatest, just to know a direction,
it's crazy because at eleven, you know, the average eleven
year old, it's all over the place.

You know what I'm saying.

It's crazy too, though, Easter Ray, because I knew what
I wanted to do early on, you know what I'm saying.
I knew that I wanted to do something around entertaining.
And I used to sit down and I used to
write people autographs. What yeah, when I was a kid,
and all my autographs said best wishes, it'd be like wishes,
you know, yeah. Yeah, And we were going through bouts

of homelessness, right, and at one point I told my mom.
I said, Mom, I said, one day I'm going to
buy you a house and we're living in a motel.
That's how I'm going to buy you a house and
will never be evicted again. Yeah, and my mom and
I tell me, my mom could have said, baby, please
come on, this real stuff going on.

And she told me, she said, I know you with it. Yes,
I love it. I love it. Yeah, it's like stuff
like that.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
You also felt like you had a purpose, you know,
and you wanted to achieve this specifically because you had
this particular goal and a set of circumstances. And I
feel like that that is the making of so many
other people's success stories, is just wanting to get out
of your circumstances or just believing so hard in yourself
or having someone.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
To believe in. Yeah, man, it makes all the difference.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
We got more we need to speak about in the neighborhood,
Big Boys neighborhood.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
This is big boy on demand, Big Boys neighborhood. All right,
now we're back up in here with in the neighborhood
with awkward Black Girl. That's you and your team.

You know, that's that's that your money is that your production.
You know what I'm saying, like, yeah, it started off
just me. And then that same girl that I've met
in college who.

Was just like, girl, where y'all script at?

Speaker 3 (03:58):
She saw it and she was like, let me help
you produce this for real because it was very cheap and
you could tell that I was doing I was holding
new care and no lighting. And she was like, girl,
I'm going to school for producing at USC. Let me
get you a crew. And she changed the game for
that series. And then that's when I got to a

point where people were like we were used to release
episodes once a month, and people were like, where's more,
Where's more? And the more people I brought on, I
was like, I gotta start paying them. They're doing this
for free. We had we were there for the weekend,
and so we did a kick start to raise money
and people gave us. It doesn't seem like that much now,

(04:39):
but to us it was crazy, but sixty thousand dollars
to keep the series the season going, and so that
was a game changer.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
And then we did like a.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
College tour where people I'm a terrible business woman or
was then, but basically we started a college tour because
people would be in the comments and be.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
Like come to my school, and I'd be like for what.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
And then we were like, well, this is a good
way to spread the word of the series, but we
don't know how much to charge people to send them
to the school, to bring us to their school. So
we were like, well, we'll charge them one hundred dollars,
and they just got to fly us out and put
it put us up.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
And of course we got like eighty school.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
Thousand, closing us on spear flights, having them staying dorm
rooms until I met I think I went to my
own college and she was like, girl, you charge let
me do you charged on one hundred dollars? I was like, no,
well for this one, we charged two hundred.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
Girl, you got it wrong right here.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
Because she said, we just hired this poet to come
out here for five thousand dollars. Like, girl, up your price,
and I was like five thousand. Don't did sixty schools?

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Five schools right? So that you don't mind?

Speaker 2 (06:00):
You like poetry, man need to do poetry? Like, no, girl,
you need to charge more. I just thought poets got
more money, you know what I'm saying. But that's crazy, right.
That's another part of the tuition to the school experience,
that was for sure.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
And if we could just if we could clear a honey,
you know, maybe people were like, I don't know, I
don't want to drive them away one hundreds.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
They were like, back, dude, somewhere somebody gonna listen to this.
Be like, dude, I told you all we got her
for a hundred hey man, and when you probably went
up on your price and it was like, oh, she doesn't.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
At the hotel.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Yeah, and she won't room service. But that's crazy. How
when you don't know, you don't know, you know, yeah,
and somebody sometimes something and not think anybody's getting over.
But sometimes people are not going to tell you your worth.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
No, absolutely no.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
I guess why would they if you're setting that price point?
And yeah, shout out to that person who didn't have
to tell me that information. But it was just like, girl,
have some stuff respects.

How the HBO come aboard? HBO came aboard.

So you know, they'll once you get representation, they'll set
you up on these general meetings you go and meet
with people. And I told them that HBO was a
dream network, and so we had a general meeting. And
I usually hate those meetings, right, It's just like you're
literally they're getting to know you, and I like to
have a meeting with the purpose where it's just like
I got a project.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
I got a project.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
So we have one of those general meetings, and I thought, oh, okay,
it was fine, but they didn't have nothing from me.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
I have anything, Well, I have a lot for them.
They didn't seem, you know, ready.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
And so then I got an opportunity to work with
Shonda Rhymes and create a pilot for her.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
And that was like a huge dream come true for me.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
But I did that pilot was not good unfortunately. Really,
I just I was I choked. You know, the network
process I wasn't familiar with. I was more coming from
the mindset of I want to create what they want,
as opposed to I have something to say, and this
is what I want to make because I just didn't know.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
As opposed to I'm going to what are they looking for? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (08:33):
Yeah, And I just needed to just know. And I
also take in every note. I didn't know how to
take notes. So if the network told me to do
something in the studio, told me to do something, I'd
be like, yeah, yeah, as opposed to being like, well,
this is my perspective, and you know, they don't mean
it literally, they just want you to figure it out.

Speaker 1 (08:49):
It's hard to find your voice in the room exactly
exactly that.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
And I didn't have the confidence to have a voice
said because it was my first TV opportunity.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
I walked into rooms, I'm like, like, I know they're
already gonna say, how do we tell him no, you know?

Speaker 1 (09:05):
Or or or yeah, like how do we get him
out of here?

Speaker 2 (09:09):
Because I'm gonna tell you straight up, I take meetings right,
and there's just sometimes too and and and you know,
and I'm going into meetings already knowing that I've done
meetings before with other people.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
So in my head, I'm walking in like, you know, they're.

Speaker 2 (09:24):
Gonna say, oh you, we'll get with you, or we
love it, you know, because I've had those meetings where
I'm like, damn, how do I get this person out
the room?

Speaker 1 (09:32):
Damn?

Speaker 2 (09:32):
Yeah, man.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
To take it? Yeah, like or when they get in there,
like so what you got?

Speaker 2 (09:39):
You know, you know, But but I mean and then
also we're paying somebody else's to wish that, you know,
that we're helping them pay their tuition to the school
of experience too, because these rooms can.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
Be intimidating, you know.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
And and when you don't know or you feel like, man,
this is a great opportunity. Sometimes you know that that's
a pressure you too.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (10:00):
The naivete of like this is, oh, I'm in this room.
I have to something has to come of it. And
it's like you go into a lot of rooms and
sometimes nothing comes of it. But with that particular room,
I thought I left for HBO. I left thinking, Okay,
nothing came of that.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
That sucks.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
But then when the Shonda show failed, they called me.
They were just like, hey, what do you have going on?
We heard that you're free and so that's when I
was able to go in and pitch what would ultimately
become insecure.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
What was the time between your initial media with HBO
and coming back where they were looking for you?

Speaker 3 (10:32):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (10:32):
A year? Damn?

Speaker 2 (10:33):
Yeah, yeah, don on the year feel long yet because
you're not even thinking like, wait, oh yeah, damn I did.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
I did go over there.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
It feels so long, even my journey at one point
now it feels like a long journey. But I was
thinking about how long it felt for my show to
get on the ear and it was only two and
a half years, maybe three years of doing things, and
that's a long ass time. But in the scheme of things,
everything else was so fast.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
Yeah, it's a hold on for a second Easter, Ray,
we got a whole lot more. We need to speak
to you about your continue to hang out with us
in the neighborhood, Big Boys neighborhood. This is big Boy

wasn't kind or you felt like.

Man, you know they might hit me up now, just
like no, I no, thank you, because I know your character.
There's no when you thought I could do anything for you.
And that's that's like, I'll never forget that. You know,
the way that someone makes you feel when they think
that you're nothing to them. Dude.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
I just had a conversation with this guy. Yesterday. I
was at this thing called slam Dance.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
Oh yeah, the festival.

Speaker 2 (11:50):
Yeah yeah, So I went and checked out slam Dance.
I was watching this the Barge documentary that.

Speaker 1 (11:55):
I just heard about that yesterday. This was so good
and sad. Oh yeah yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
Man, it made me want to go look for the
bars brothers, like, man, just come in here, you know
what I'm saying. But I met this dude by the
name of A Justice and Justice. I forget what city
he had flew in. He was in another film that
they were highlighting, but even just talking to him, he
was like, man, how do I stay on? And I
was like, man, it's character first, characters. What's being said
about you when you're not in the row? Work on
your character. If I wasn't in radio, if I was

(12:21):
a janitor, I'd be one of the coolest janitors. You
knew if I was a chef, the coolest shit. You
know what I'm saying, Like, oh no, we trust him,
you know what I'm saying. And I told him, I said, man,
it's your character first and then whatever else under that.
You know you want to be this, but just just
take care of your character and who you are. And
I told him, I said, man, you're going to meet people.
And I said, man, I've met people. And I had

(12:43):
the same conversation with him that did me a certain
way early on. And it wasn't that I was going
to prove them wrong. I just proved me right, you
know what I'm saying. And it's a total difference. I
proved you wrong. Am I proving me right than fine?
But one of them I had to be real petty
on you know, he asked you for something. I had
to bring them back to a night like I love it.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
Oh my god. Sometimes you have to.

Speaker 3 (13:03):
You have to write and like let people see themselves
through your eyes, but conversially like leading with character when
you meet someone and I've done this countless times, where
you meet someone who's just great and you just want
them to win.

Speaker 1 (13:15):
And you will think of them, and you will.

Speaker 3 (13:18):
Plug them into whatever opportunity because they're just such a
good person and you feel like they deserve and that
goes a long way.

Speaker 1 (13:24):
Yeah, you want to see them. It's just like you
deserve and that.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
Yeah, leading with character, it can sometimes get you your
next job when you're not even thinking about it.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
And you probably felt that early on, or you probably
didn't recognize it. There was probably somebody in a position
that probably said, oh, no, she cool, you know what
I'm saying, or you know, that's a good point. I've
definitely have people think about me. Yeah, some of the
first meetings I've had in the Hollywood are people I've
worked with now, and I'm grateful for them. Where it's
just like, oh, you took a meeting with me.

Speaker 3 (13:54):
I just worked with on our most recent movie, Macro,
and they Charles King was one of my first early
meetings Poppy Hangs when she used to work at Todder
Perry's company, thirty fourth Street Films. It was one of
my first Hollywood meetings. And there's such a group of
black executives that saw me and saw my work and
we're just like, come on in, let's let's figure something out.
