to Fox Sports Radio. Boom Up America, Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio, coming to you from the Sunday City,
Los Angeles, California, brought to you by Farmers. At Farmers,
we've seen almost everything, so we're now to cover almost anything.
When it's game time, have an experienced player help you
stay at the game, put their experience in a play.

(00:43):
At Farmers dot com, we are Farmers. Uh. There's an
expression in basketball, and I'm sure it's an expression in
other parts of life, but the expression in basketball goes
a little something like this, pros do what they can
do and don't do what they cannot. Um. There's other expressions.

(01:09):
Some guys will say, make them pay to see what
you can't do. The idea is plenty of your strengths.
Let your strengths know who you are. Be true to
who you are. Everyone has strengths, everyone has weaknesses, and
play up those strengths and don't even talk about those weaknesses.

(01:33):
Kids or immature adults try improve to everyone else. What
they say you can't do can in fact be done.
When I get it, I grew up watching Smoking the Bandit, right,
it might be my favorite movie, and uh, and in

(01:55):
it and the stowman says, uh. Actually, so man says,
why are we doing this? Bannett says, because they said
it couldn't be done. But we would all agree that
the Bandit Smoking the Bandit was a little bit on
the immature side. He pulled it off, run a texs Arcana,
Texas and back to get Coors beer. That's bootlegging, son.

(02:20):
The fact is that in sports and in life, as
you grow older, you understand yourself, You know what you
can and cannot do, and you simply play up to
those strengths. Steph Curry is not the best player in
the NBA. I've heard people say that, I understand his impact.

(02:41):
I think he's a magnificent basketball player, and he's the
type of player that his style will be replicated for
years to come. We've already seen the next generation of
guys learning to play like Staff in the form of
Trey Young. Trey, just like Steff Son of a very
good player, not an NBA player like Steph um Trays,

(03:05):
not as quick or maybe as athletic as even Steph
is now, but continues to grow into his body. Had
a spectacular season this year for the Hawks and where
he played up to his strengths. He's a great shooter,
he's a great passer, and he's a clever defensive player.
That makes up for the fact that he is not

(03:26):
terribly athletic. He's not terribly strong, he's not particularly good
on defense. It's fascinating because Kyrie Irving the new rumors
out there Calherd had this, stephen A. Smith had this,
that it appears to it appears that Kyrie Irving's headed
to Brooklyn and he'll become a net And while I

(03:47):
don't think Boston is gonna say good riddence, I do
think that Kyrie is still in the kind of adolescent
stage of being an NBA player and he may never
grow out of it. During their last series in the
NBA Playoffs against Milwaukee Bucks, several times over in spite

(04:07):
of the fact despite the fact that the assignments were
to have him not guard and not switch onto Jannis
and Tennacoopo, he did so. Not only was he not
supposed to switch onto Janice, but look, their whole defensive
philosophy was to hide Kyrie Irving because kind of like Staff,

(04:31):
he's not a great defender. He's got quick hands and
it steals off the basketball. He can be active, but
man to man guarding bigger men, he's not great. He
might not even be good. And everyone the NBA seems
to know this, except well except Kyrie Irving. What's the
story of this year? Kyrie wanted to be a leader
and he's not a leader? Why do you want to

(04:53):
be a leader? Because everyone said he wasn't a leader,
and guess what he's not. He spent the this entire
year trying to prove to us he was something that
he was not. Asked the Boston Celtics, ask people in
the NBA, asked his former teammates in Cleveland, ask people
who cover the league. They'll all say he's one of
the great closers in basketball. He's the best finishing point

(05:18):
guard since Rod Strickland, his godfather, played in the NBA.
But he's not a leader, and he's not a great defender,
and he's not really a true ball distributor, might not
even be a point guard. He's a lead guard. Whereas
Steph Curry is who he is, knows who he is

(05:41):
and doesn't fight that Layton games. You don't see him
switching off and trying to man up like k d
does and guard James Harden. You didn't see that that
was Kevin Durant. Why because Kevin durand seven ft tall,
and even when he gets beat he can recover because
of his length. Whereas Steph Curry, he does what he's
supposed to do defense lea stays active and tries to

(06:01):
get steals, and he can play with supreme self confidence
because he knows. Look, I know I'm a score. I
know him allowed to get away with some turnovers. I
am not your prototypical point guard. When I give up
the basketball, I'd become an off guard. So when I

(06:21):
hear and by the way, this is like a made
up nontroversy, this idea. There's lots of haters towards Steph Curry.
There's not right. There are haters, but those are people
on social media who suddenly, somehow their forced opinion isn't
is put up there with real opinions that actually matter.
People are either in the camp of he's the best

(06:44):
player in the NBA or he's one of the great
players in the NBA that does have some flaws. That's
not being a hater. But Steph Curry has a chance
to do something tonight which he has not shown to
do nor could most mortal men do, which is lift
up a bunch of backups and take down the best
team in the Eastern Conference. He might or might not

(07:06):
have Clay, he won't have Kevin Durant, he won't have
Kivon Looney. They'll be at He'll They'll be at a
talent and depth disadvantage in in comparison to the Toronto
Raptors and to health disadvantage compared to the Toronto Raptors.
They're not expected to win. And if Clay doesn't show up,
if Steph can pull off a win there, it's nothing
short of miraculous. But the reason that Staff is mostly

(07:31):
beloved and more successful at the end of the day
with his team as opposed to Kyrie Irving, who runs
the risk of ruining the chemistry of a of an
incredible bunch in Brooklyn. Right, Like Brooklyn this year feels
like the Celtics last year, lower expectations and yet they
exceeded seemingly all of them. That's because Kyrie is not

(07:54):
the pros pro does not do what he does and
doesn't do what he doesn't do. I mean, look, we've
seen this from Magic Johnson. Magic Johnson knew he was
good to be Magic Johnson being president of a team
making day to day decisions when you don't have day

(08:16):
to day investment. That's not what he does. That's not
who he is. We hide it by saying it's not
in his brand, but really just not in his wheelhouse
and of of what he does best, at least in
a position of power, like Magic was, you can hire
people that know what you don't know to hide for
your weaknesses, whereas you can't do that when you're a

(08:38):
ball player, Right, it's your decision on how you're going
to play, even if you have talented guys that can
hide those things around you. But Magic wasn't a coach,
Magic wasn't a night uh nightly talk show host. Magic
is not a president. Magic Johnson is Magic Johnson. Yeah,
a bit of an empty suit, but he's got a

(08:59):
great some aisle, and people still have a tendency to
gravitate towards him. You know how many how many ex
pittsburghs dealers are like man, they just they only want
us to do one thing in Pittsburgh. Yeah, because they
want you to do what you do well. They don't
want Levyan Bell to be a rapper. They want Levyan
Bell to be running back shocker there. And and the

(09:23):
crazy part about life is and look, I've been guilty
of this because I'm I think I'm good at multiple things.
And by not focusing solely on radio or sometimes so
focusing on I have had a television show or doing
basketball games, it does I understand the idea. Your brain
sits there and goes like, hey, I have all these
other different parts to my brain which I wanna use.

(09:47):
I I want to I want to explore kind of
the boundaries of my intelligence and my capabilities. But if
you do one thing at an exemplary level in this life,
that's pretty special. And I think maybe that's the thing
we're missing as fans. That's the thing that parents miss,

(10:07):
and more than anything, that's the thing that stars miss
Garth Brooks once upon a time had an alter ego album.
Do you guys remember that an alter ego album of court?
It bombed? Why Because he's good at being Garth Brooks
saying country songs that were that he he drew from

(10:28):
old rock and roll songs or old country songs and
made into his own. And he lights up a room
with his personality and his performances. That's who he is,
arguably the most. I believe he's the most successful individual
performer in the history of American music in terms of
record sales. It's crazy, right, He's had HBO, CBS, especially

(10:52):
at his own show in Vegas whatever, which is all
about his musical journey. But there was a time in
which he wanted nothing to do with being Garth Brooks.
He wanted an alter fron ego. And you know, we learned, Hey,
I'm really good at one thing. I'm gonna do that
one thing. And that's what Steph Curry has learned. I'm
really good at being Steph Curry. Are you a point guard?
Not really? Are you a two guard? Not really? You're

(11:13):
a little bit of both. Are you a great defender?
Not really? But I know how to be effective on defense,
and when I get the ball or move without the basketball,
I'm incredibly effective on offense where they touch it, I don't.
Kyrie Irving spends an entire year trying to prove to
us he's a leader, which he is not, he can
run a team, which he cannot, and that he's a defender,

(11:38):
which he is not. Adults and pros do what they
do and don't do what they cannot. Frank Gi Solo
joins the show up coming next, Does Kyrie to Brooklyn
makes sense? And does that mean k D to Brooklyn?
Or does KD go to New York? Or does this
change things? Plus DeMarcus Cousins twenty eight minutes in his

(12:04):
second game back. What should our expectations of Cousins be?
What should our expectations of the Warriors be? Not knowing
who's gonna play tonight? Find out next. Be sure to

(12:46):
confusing with terms like dealer price, Liz price, an invoice price.

sold that covers the NBA for the athletic. You can
hear him on Serious x M NBA Radio Monday through
Friday at seven a m. Frank Best, guess you think

(13:08):
Clay Thompson place at night? Yeah? I think he plays Doug.
You know he's a He's a tough guy. Number one.
He wants to be out there. The big question is
going to be how will you do it defensively? He's
so important everything that they do on the defensive end
of the court. And clue, you could see what it
impacted them not having him, not having him out there
in those last six minutes when in the final five
thirty nine they made just one shot and of course

(13:30):
that was a shop Andre Guitala. Yeah. Um. With with
that being said, I can't help but be impressed. I've
said all week, I think this gives us a chance
to really gain more respect for what Steve Kerr does,
because Steve Kerr lives in that world of kind of

(13:51):
begrudging respect where people say, yeah, they've won championships, but
he's had the best players. He didn't have the best
players last the other night, and he's still his team
still found a way to win. And the point that
I've tried to make the people is not only did
he first come up with this system and style that
the Warriors play, but their ability to change from how

(14:12):
they play with Kevin Rant and how they play without him,
That in fact is coaching. And you look, they're the
best third quarter team in the NBA since he got there.
And third quarter is an adjustment quarter, right, that's coaching
as well. Have you gained the same amount of respect
for Steve Kerr that I have during this time in
which he hasn't had his whole team. Absolutely? And you know,
all these championship coaches, they're all winning with great players,

(14:34):
and think about what Steve Kriss had to do you
know if you look at the Kavon Looney, the way
that he played, especially against Houston Rockets, where he was
great when he switched out on James Harden. And now
all of a sudden, you getting too Marcus Cousins back,
who hadn't played in a long time. You played the
eight minutes in game one, you know he was okay,
and you're taking a big gamble here. You know you're
you're risking going down O two in the NBA Finals,

(14:55):
he starts to Marcus Cousins and there were some you know,
touchy moments there with Cousins. You didn't know how he
would do defensively. I didn't think that Nick Nurse did
a good enough job kind of attacking the Marcus Cousins,
but starting him paid off well. And how about when
he brought in Andrew Boga Bogat did a terrific job
as well. And here you are trying to mix and
match and late in the game, I mean, they have
Quinn Cook out there. So to me, that's like it's

(15:17):
like a tribute to the entire organization because the scouting
department clearly does a very good job player development. And
then Steve Kerr having faith and a lot of players
that you don't expect. I mean, Quinn Cook had huge
moments in that game when he hit those three three pointers.
He was good for them defensively. You know, Sean Livingston
was struggled in the first half. Late in the game,
he's the one that made the pass to Andre Guadalas.

(15:39):
So I thought his use of the roster in that
game was really impressive. He put a lot of faith
and a lot of guys. I mean, Jordan Bell started
game one, didn't play at all in game two, and
it seemed like every button that's Steve Kerr pushed on
the night when he had to know Durant and then
you lose both Looney and then Clay Thompson and you
still win the game. That I thought, like for an

(16:00):
organization and including Steve Kirr being at the top of it,
I thought that was a great way. I do too.
I just again, but like, even in the way in
which you look at it, we were still like, we
can't say like it was Steve Kerr, Like, well, who
do hell do you think making these decisions? Right? It's
not like Bob Meyers is coming down and going like,
you know, you should play right now. It's he does.
It's it's a weird place where in which we're like, yeah,

(16:22):
he's the coach, but they got so many smart guys.
Doug got leaves show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um,
what about Kauai? How healthy do you think he is?
I think, you know, I was at both games one
and two, and there are times, especially when he's trying
to sprint back on defense, he kind of like lowers
his head and you can tell that he's laboring just

(16:44):
a little bit. Now it's not preventing him from playing,
and he's you know, he's a tough embrace. Especially when
he gets how only gets in the paint, he'll drive
and he'll kind of lower his left shoulder into the
defense is to kind of create that separation and create
the contact and still score. You know, he wasn't great
in Game two. I mean they went that long stretch
with they weren't scoring a lot either. But I if

(17:07):
I'm Toronto and I'm Nick Nurse, that's the one guy
I'm kind of relying on tonight because who's been in
bigger road playoff games, and you know he's been, you know,
he's one big playoff games in Miami during the NBA Finals,
and the last time he played in Oakland when it
matters was that game one of the of the Conference
finals a couple of years ago when he was having
that big game and then Zaz Opportunitia didn't let him

(17:28):
land that he heard his ended up hurting his leg.
If Toronto's gonna win tonight, it's gonna have to be
Kawhi Leonard. Just the experience and the talent alone is
what's gonna have to carry them through. Doug Gotlive show
here on Fox Sport Trader. That's the voice of Frank
I Sola frank Um. There's a lot of rumors out there,
stephen A Smith Colin Coward both saying they're hearing Kyrie

(17:48):
Irving telling people that Brooklyn is his destination. You live
in New York, You've covered New York sports for the
better part of your your professional life. Are you hearing
the same in Kyrie lives about two towns over from me.
I have been hearing the same as well. That if
he does leave Boston is very good chances is gonna happen.
He wants to live in New York and he seems

(18:09):
to have a little bit more faith in the ownership
management of the Brooklyn Nets than he does with um
the New York Nick. So that's something he apparently is considering.
You know, you just wonder what the domino effect will
be if it is Kyrie irving to the Brooklyn Netsays
that mean that Durant is going there? Does that mean
that Durant won't go to New York with Durant go
to New York with Kemba Walker. I will say this

(18:31):
being out in Oakland. I'm sorry being out in Toronto
and a lot of people from the war organization, Now
what now you can sit here and say what else
are they going to say? But there did seem to
be kind of like a renewed optimism that Kevin Durant
may may stay there, maybe on a short term deal,
maybe to be a long term deal. But they they're
pretty confident. They feel like they have a chance. Maybe
like a couple of months ago they kind of felt

(18:54):
like it looks like he's leaving, But now they feel
a little bit differently, and they claim that he's been
in a much better mood, mood, he's been a little
bit more engaged. So and here's the thing, Doug think
about how many things could change between now and July one,
which isn't that far away. But the Kyrie irving to
the Nets definitely seems to be gaining a lot more momentum. Alright,
what what then of the Knicks. Let's say that happens,

(19:17):
they just go all in on Kemba Walker, Like, did
do that? Does that cut them out of the k
D thing? Like? What what do you think that the
Knicks do if that in fact becomes reality? Oh? I
think if they if they could get uh, Kemba Walker
with Kevin Durant, they would definitely be happy coming out
of the summer with that. I mean, to me, there's
too many people still mention Kevin Durant to the Knicks.
Something tells me that that's going to happen. But if

(19:38):
the Knicks do lose out on him, the Knicks will
just fall back on Well, we're rebuilding and that's all
we're trying to do right now. So but if they
don't get them, remember they set up this whole off
season to go get two big guys, and that included
trading Christoph Prazingis. Because if you had kept Prazingis right now,
you're going in the next season where you could possibly
draft R. J. Barrett with Kristaph Perzingis. Now you don't

(19:59):
have for thing is And if you don't get Kevin Durant,
that would be a big time miss by the New
York Nix. And then would they do something like goingf
to DeMarcus Cousins as much as as well as the
Marcus Cousins played in Game two, are you gonna throw
a max contract at the Marcus Cousins. That's a center
and he's not a rim protector, asked about a foot
and he's had an injury histories now and and and

(20:21):
not a great defensive player. That that's a risky one
for me. And I understand why Cousins. You know, I
give him credit for being out there, and he's got
a lot of motivation to win a championship and to
get a big contract. But you gotta be real careful
with the Marcus Cousins, No, no question at all. What
are you hearing about the Lakers? Well, I mean, clearly
they're involved in Anthony Davis. But I've been saying all along,

(20:42):
you know that that magic Johnson is Don It's like,
you know the one guy that you know he's gonna
be a big supporter of Lebron. James is gonna be
Jason Kidd. We know that they're close. You know that
Lebron wanted Jason Kid either to be the coach of
the team or be involved with the team somehow. I
just wondered, Doug, what's gonna happen if they do strike out?
I mean, Bill Plashky from the l at Times did

(21:03):
right from what he was hearing that Lebron may want out.
I'm still convinced there's a chance that that could happen
that at some point Lebron just says, you know, this
isn't working out in l A. There's no way that
he can sit back now and say this is not
go the way that I wanted to know. You can
point to the injury that he had on Christmas Day.
I get all that, but it's really falling apart in
a lot of ways. And who in an organization does

(21:25):
he really trust other than Jason Kitt, Rob Polinka, Genie Buss,
Kurt Rambis, Linda Rambus, Phil Jackson, who you know is
out there somewhere in in the Genie busses a year.
I mean, it's a strange situation. I don't think we've heard,
you know, the last of this with the Lakers, especially
if they don't get Anthony Davis. You just wonder what
the future may hold for Lebron because they control his future.

(21:45):
It's not the other way around, no question. But I mean,
he's not getting trade, he's not going anywhere, his kids
about to start high school, has been out here a
year like he's in the You guys, you guys brought
me out of here. You guys fix it? You know,
are we a year or two? A year from now,
maybe that maybe you go back in that discussion if
it's not happen after one year, do you think it's
funny you say that you guys fix it. Do you

(22:06):
think that he believes they could fix it? I don't know.
I I think he thinks that it will look. I
think he doesn't think. He didn't think much of who
he worked with in Cleveland and they you know, I mean,
I I get that he liked their he liked their GM,
but he liked him so much he didn't help him
get the Lakers job. So yeah, I don't think he's

(22:27):
had faith in a lot of people, and they found
a way at times to make it good enough, it's not.
It's not a crazy, difficult, hard issue in his mind
to get the right pieces around him. And I just
I don't think he's motivated to to force the trade
right now because he doesn't want to move his family,
and there's no there's no real answer, right, Like the

(22:47):
Knicks aren't the answer. He doesn't want to work for.
He doesn't want to work for Jim Dolan. You know,
he's not gonna go to the Clippers. You know they're
not gonna trade with the Clippers. He's not going to
the Nets, uh signing trade for there you go. Hes
not going to Toronto like Lebron James is not going
to Toronto. There's no real it's not his choice, though,
yes it is. It's very simple. I'm not going. He's

(23:09):
got he's got three commas in the bank. He's like,
we we know the reality of it is, like Lebron
is not going to Toronto, like they traded him to
Oklahoma City. He's not going. He's not going. You think
you think from his contract, I don't walk away. I
just say he's not. I'm not doing that. And it's
not that's not that's the reality of where he is

(23:31):
in his status, his status in the stature he's not
doing interesting. It's an interesting contract that he signed, the
fact that he did that he didn't include a no
trade clause and didn't do what he had been doing
for how many years? We just signed basically one year
contract with to keep her doing after after another year
opting out. And by the way, and by the way,
Gene's not Genie's not trading him anyway. They make tons

(23:52):
of like none of this only makes sense from the
from the standpoint of your panic because it was dysfunctional.
Magic left. There's all this other in fighting, like, look,
they were a good team even with a flawed roster.
They fixed the roster, they'll be fine. I honestly believe that.
I don't think he's not trading him, And he's not.

(24:12):
He doesn't want to be traded. But don't you also
think that the team is at like a different time,
Like he's at a different place in his career than
the rest of the team. Like, yes, you go get
into the Davis that changes things, But it's like this
young team, it's like we're trying to build with young players.
Oh and we also have Lebron James and and you're
in the Western Conference. They bet they better make a bowl,
a big, bold move this summer. They need to well.

(24:33):
I definitely think they'll make some some moves this summer.
I don't know if they'll get Anthony Davis will we'll see.
I don't know what they have to give up. I
don't know what who else is. There's plenty of other
guys who could in fact be available. Um last thing,
Houston's kind of gone under the radar nationally. We've talked
about it a bunch, you know, from the Fatida comments,
and he's made a couple of them two uh to

(24:54):
you know, having him get rid of his his bench
staff and dictating that from above, then everybody becomes available.
I thought of James Harden via trade and then Mike
D'Antoni breaks off contract extension talks. What do you think
Houston looks like when they take the floor next year?
That's an interesting one. I think that James Harden is
gonna be on that roster, and how is Chris Paul
not gonna be? There? Is someone really going to go

(25:16):
out in trade for Chris Paul? I actually think that
the Rockets were overreacting a little bit, you know, we
we keep talking about the about the Golden State Warriors
kind of being this all time team. That's what they
lost to. And I get it. The last season was
a major disappointment. You're up three too, Chris Paul gets hurt,
you don't play well in game seven. And this year
was a bigger disappointment because you didn't have to face

(25:37):
Kevin Durant. You blew it in Game five and you
lost that home game. I still think it's a little
bit of an overreaction by that organization. I just think
they're losing to the better team, and to fire every
assistant coach. I don't think that's the answer. I think
that's like rearranging the furniture in your house. It's not
really you know, might look different, but it's not. I
don't know, necessarily think it was a smart thing to do.

(25:58):
I think there's a couple of lows that they could make,
and you know, give it your best shot next ure,
especially if Kevin Durant is not gonna be there. You
don't know what the future holes fame. If Kevin Durant
leaves the conference, Why can't you be the best team
in the Western Conference next year? Well, I think The
argument with Fatida's argument was when we played them without
Kevin Durant and they still beat us, and they still
beat this and Chris Paul is not going to get
any younger, and Clint Capella is still not gonna be

(26:19):

that would be they should have thought about that before
they invested all that money in and Chris Paul, that's
I mean, the contract is just starting now. It's incredible. Yep, yep,

(26:42):
joins us on the Doug Gotlie Show. Ralph, what you got? Well, First,
we got one Major League Baseball game going on. That's uh,
the White Sox playing at Washington and then's with two
runs in the sixth inning, they now lead for one
over Chicago. Is the White Sox bat in the top
of the eighth Coming up in our few minutes, it'll
be the Dodgers playing at Arizona, Quentomeda going against John

(27:04):
du Blontier and Philadelphia playing in San Diego. Jake Areaa
facing off against cal Quantrill in that one. Of course. Well,
the NHL Stanley Cup Final is tied at two games
apiece and it continues tomorrow Thursday at eight o'clock Eastern
time for game five. That's the Discover Card key matchup

between the Raiders and Packers will not be played in Oakland.

(27:46):
It's gonna be played in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It is a
Raiders home game, and well, gee, it's their final season
in Oakland, and they made it easier on the fans
by taking one of their preseason games and sending it
to the Great White North. Ken Rosenthal reporting the Cubs
are interested in bringing in free agent closer Craig Kimberl.
John Morossi says, the braves are interested in so you
can expect some news happening there in the course. Tonight

(28:07):
it is game number three of the NBA Finals between
Toronto and Golden State. The Raptors trying to do a
little bit better. Here's Nick Nurse. We talked a lot
about our shot spectrum and the shots we're trying to get. Um.
You know, we gotta get a certain amount of paint touches. Um,
we gotta get the ball side to side. You know,
those are things you just got to keep an eye on.

(28:27):
I think we just had some lolls in those three
areas in game two, all right, And they will toss
the ball up into the air in Oakland at nine
o'clock Eastern time, and I'll be back to Doug Gottlieb
in ten seconds. But first word from farmers that Farmers insurance.

Doug gli show rose on here on Fox Sports Radio.
This is from Mark Stein. He puts out like a
is a weekly or a daily letter, uh, a weekly letter.
He also writes for The New York Times covering the NBA.
He's worked other places. Stein's really tied in quote. The

(29:11):
heavy input that Darryl Moorey is having in rebuilding Mike
D'Antoni staff nonetheless spotlights another growing and interesting trend in
the coaching business. In numerous instances this spring, we've seen
front offices dictate staffing choices to their head coaches. In
l A. Of course, that's what happen. Happened to breakdown
to Tyro Tyron Lieu in Minnesota. Uh Gerson rosis who

(29:33):
is the new president of basketball Operations when he came
up from Houston, made interim coach Ryan Saunders is head coach,
but Aus did every member of saunders staff from the
last season, while also refusing saunders desire to hire Sydney
Lowe as his top aide on his new staff. Sydney
low of course and uh flip Saunders very very very
close friends. The Memphis Grizzlies meanwhile, the only team still

(29:57):
actively looking for head coach, and the Grizzler said to
be considering a new bench model in which at least
one assistant coach holds a dual title that includes some
sort of personal responsibilities. So everyone's trying this different way
of doing the same thing, and you know, it's it's
looked from the outside looking in. Here's what we want

(30:18):
to do, here's how we want to do it. I
think that I think it's fascinating. Doesn't mean it doesn't work,
but doesn't also mean it will work right Like I
think staffs are important. They have to work together, they
have to have individual responsibilities offense and defense, and sometimes
you have a special situations coach, there's a player development coach.

(30:42):
None of it works unless the head coach believes in
what they're telling them. And some of this is, of
course an offshoot of a football model. Some of it
is everyone copy copying Nick Saban. Nick Saban has the
deepest staff in college football history, most people in college
football history, and he divides up responsibility so all he

(31:03):
has to do is kind of coach ball, go out
and do the dinners and be a leader coach what
he wants to. Coach knows what he knows and doesn't
try to know what he doesn't know we talked about
with Steph Curry. Anyway, you were saying, um, Ryan music heater.
So I guess the idea here is you know, blending

(31:25):
or blurring the line between front office and coaching staff.
And I guess by blurring the line, you're making more
of a cohesive unit. Right, That's what seems to be
the idea here. Okay, Uh do teams does it feel
like coaching staff versus front office or is that just

(31:47):
with dysfunctional teams, because it sort of feels like most coaches,
which is what we saw with tylu and perhaps some
other you know, more veteran coaches are going to have
a problem with they'll feel like the on office is meddling, right,
Like that's how I see this coming about. Uh yeah,

(32:08):
I mean again, it depends on the head coach, you higher,
It all depends, like it all depends. This is you're
about to get You're gonna get married in a year,
rights in a year. And by the way, some beautiful
pictures of your fiance that you are actually in the pictures,
but you're not a good part of the picture. Um.

(32:28):
But it's like, look, I mean I don't know what
religion you are, what religion. She is how you plan
to raise kids religiously, how you how many kids you
plan on having, what you're like, these are discussions you
should have before you get married. My wife and I
we were like, like, she's from Ray Southern Baptist, but

(32:48):
she's not like hardcore Southern Baptist. I al was raised Jewish,
but I'm definitely not a hardcore Jewish. And so her
thing was like, look, I don't really feel I don't
love the idea of a brisk and I was like, well,
we're not doing a We're not doing a baptism. So
that was our agreement before we ever knew we were
having kids. It was no Bristol. But it doesn't mean

(33:08):
that little dude has not been snipped. It just means
the formal ceremony we're doing without right, the formal ceremony
will do with that. So um no, it's not a
total neck household. So um that's not how we roll.
So I just I use that as a all of

(33:31):
this stuff will work if when you're hiring the guy,
you understand, listen, we want to hire this guy, that guy,
the other guy. And here's why where you're running difficulty
is what they've done with Mike D'Antoni. D'Antoni has been
a head coach in the NBA for like twenty years,
even a head coach period for like thirty years, and

(33:52):
then all of a sudden, his last year your contract,
you gonna go like, hey, we're bringing in our own guys.
That just means you're bringing in somebody told him me
to replace me, or somebody who's gonna be a spy
for the front office, which that's never good, never good.
So I don't hate the idea with a new head
coach if that's part of the discussion when you get
the job. I really don't like it though, when the

(34:16):
head coach has a set plan of how to do things,
you have a certain way you've always done things, and
then you go, yeah, you've done it that way for
ten years to a to a bunch of success, but
it's still not good enough. Back to back home runs
in d C as the Gnats have a blown save.
We'll get to that, plus big changes coming in Major

Doug gotlic Show rolls on here on Fox Sports Radio

stories of the day, themes the night. We do so
by playing a game. Okay, this is game time Tide

(35:46):
on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Game Time is brought to
you by Discover Card. We treat you like you'd treat you.
I'm gonna treat you to Ralph Irvin. Who's gonna treat
us to a game. Yeah, it's right, Doug. We do
have a game, and today we are playing real news
fake news. That's real news. It is it is, in fact,

(36:08):
so our first story, Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Banford
said that they're going to continue to discuss extending the
protective netting in ballparks, but no action would be taken
during the current season. Is that real news or fake news?
And they're spectacular It is real news because well, quite honestly,

(36:29):
you can't mandate that you do structural changes to a
ballpark that may or may not be able to handle
it without major construction. So they're essentially want to do more,
but feasibly, you just can't force teams to make that. Again,
there's like there's a process of doing it. That's the
big thing, the process of doing it. What a what

(36:50):
a comedy of airs taking place in d C. I
can't wait to recap what's going on here in uh
in this Nationals white size gamp. But go ahead, I'm sorry,
no worries, No worries, we go. Our next story with Demarta.
Rosen told Bleacher Report that he's rooting for former former
teammate Kyle Lowry. To win an NBA championship, but still
feels he was the sacrificial lamb so the Raptors can

(37:11):
get closer to title. Contention is that real news are
fake news? Uh? Real news, they're real and they're spectacular.
In fact, here's tomorrow. Honestly, I don't even think I
said this. I probably said this to my my own
inner circle. But when for all the years and groundwork
that I did before, then none of them things would
have been possible. Yes, I thought I sacrifice. I pushed

(37:32):
the limits to where I would be the sacrificial lamb.
You just have to sit back and understand, like you know,
you are the reason so many things was he's a
Jeff Fisher of the Toronto Raptors, right, yeah, yeah there, Yes,
because I wasn't good enough, they brought in someone better. Yes,

(37:56):
that's that's the reality. So when talking about to other
NFL players and quarterbacks around the league being able to
chug a beer faster than he could, Aaron Rodgers reportedly told, well, dude,
possibly tell reporters today that there's finally a talent where
they can say they're better than me. Is that real
news or fake news? I wish it was real, but

(38:16):
I think it's fake. They're they're spectacular, and here it
is kind of said what I said. You know, if
you want to go Scott's, I feel pretty good about it.
As far as there's other guys, you know, for some
of them, there's finally a talent where they can they
can say they're better than it's amazing. He is that,
you know what is a great line, and you know

(38:38):
it ain't bragging if it's the truth. So I think
there's a little tongue in cheek there, but it's pretty amazing.
It's pretty amazing. He he just you know, dropped a
little bomb and walked away from it. So after taking
a full year off, Levi on bells at his goal
for teen is to rush for at least two thousand
yards with the New York Jets. Is that real news
or fake news? Real news? You are fake news? Actually

(39:03):
that was Adrian Peterson who said that he wants to
get to two thousand yards this year, saying, quote, if
God's willing, I can duplicate that and do it even
better end quote. He got a thousand yards last year.
Like let's let's let's be slow up there a d
slow up. Peterson became just a fifth player to rush
for a thousand yards after the age of thirty three

(39:24):
last season. So yeah, it's a little uh little excessive,
shall we say, in terms of his hopes and Texans
wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was caught sliding into the d
m s of a Turkish model, and after the screenshots
went viral, he said, whoa ho, my account was hacked.
Is that real news or fake news? It sounds like
real news. You are fake. Actually, what happened was his

(39:49):
account was hated by the Turkish model and suddenly on
his account, all of her pictures started showing up, including
as the profile picture. Really, so he posted, I g hacked.
Be back up soon. It was hacked by a Turkish
model name Cardelan Toprak, who has her own page but
only as hundred followers versus the eight hundred forty one

(40:14):
followers that DeAndre Hopkins has. I guess it's interested in.
This is game time on the Duck Gottlieb Show. Raw.
How do you say? Is it Swarow who came in
for for the Nationals? Uh? He came in and um,
I mean I came into a three one ball game
and then he gives up a home run to a

(40:35):
bra you and a home run to Castillo. But because
he didn't inherit, um he inherited those those runs, the
fact that he came in and gave up two hits
and two home runs. Right now, if the Nationals score
a run which is only on base, because um, I
love this throwing here by the picture. Yes, do you

(40:56):
know what the picture's name is? That would be Bummer.
Swear to God his name is Bummer. And it was
like a slowly hit ball to Bummer. Now Bummer gets
the third out and he underhands its first base and
they get out of the evening. But Sparrow would have
gotten the win had the had the net, which I
I just killed the wind. But we're gonna go to
extra innings in d CS and Nationals had a three

(41:17):
one lead heading to the top of the ninth. Two.
Now they get to the top of the tenth in
a three three ballgame because well they're the Nationals. Yeah,
well there is four or four four making their way
to the ninth inning. So that was the eighth That
was the my bad wild wild E thinning in in
d C. Bummer I love that the guy's name is Bummer.

The NBA Finals continue tonight with Golden State hosting Toronto
for Game three. The series tied at a game apiece,

(41:58):
the Warriors battling all out of injuries. No Kevin Durant tonight,
maybe no Clay Thompson, here's Steph Curry. We all just
understand the moment. We're very locked in and focus on
adapting to the circumstances that are thrown at us right
now with you know a lot of injuries and kind
of uncertainty of you know, even who who's gonna be
able to play. So we've been through a lot, had
a lot of different experiences. Is this just you know,

(42:19):
adding to that book. So we gotta be ready. It
gets started in Oaklint at nine o'clock Eastern time. San
Diego gets a three run homer from Josh Naylor. Will
Meyer's next up, he gets a solo shot. They lead
to Philadelphia for to as the potres bat with two
on in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the Desert,
Arizona gets to David parulta RBI double. The Dodgers still lead,

(42:40):
though to one in the bottom of the fifth. I'm
Ralph Irvin, What up to God? Leave show? Fox Sports
Radio The Doug Olland Shows brought to you Farmers. At Farmers,

(43:01):
we've seen almost everything, so we know how to cover
almost anything when it's game time. I have experienced player
help you stay at the game. But with their experience
into play at Farmers dot Com, we are well, we've
gotten to this weird place where suddenly, now Steph Curry
has haters. Are you familiar with this? Do you know?

(43:24):
Now there will be people that want to point me
and paint me as a hater because I underrated staff
coming out of college that somehow when I've said, hey,
one of the reasons he hasn't always been as great
in the playoffs as he has in the regular season
is because the physicality the playoffs and the fact that
people go at him defensively and they try and expose
him defensively. Um, but that's not being a hater. That's

(43:51):
simply explaining to you why they needed Kevin Durant who
you can be physical with, and that used to be
the m O for Kevin Durant. You push him off
the spot, and now he's gotten stronger, he's developed his
his post off his ball handling, where if you put
a big, strong guy on him, he'll go buy you,
like he did to p J. Tucker. You put a
little guy, you post you. But I wasn't aware. Here,

(44:19):
here's what I think is really stupid in the media.
And I into the l A market and there's now
actually been three teams that will move. Now why does
that matter? Well, look, if you're the owners, and the
owners thought the concussion lawsuit would cost him to billion dollars,
it's gonna cost him about a billion total. If you're
the owners, you're like, look, some of these guys haven't

(44:42):
been in NFL owners for that long, let alone when
all these guys were suffering concussions and being thrown back
out there. They don't want to pay any money for this.
There's no insurance that covers it. They gotta foot the
bill collectively, all thirty two teams. So it's the best
this way to do so well, when you move teams around,

(45:03):
there's what's called a relocation fee. It's like seven fifty
million dollars. Do the math on what three teams moving is.
You know, that's over two point to five billion dollars
in relocation piece and it gets put into a pool.
What do you think they're doing with that money? Well,
some of it they're using for themselves and for the league,

(45:26):
but some of it there and and to upkeep their
facilities and their stadiums, et cetera whenever they have to
pay their paying off. But the big thing is they're
paying off the lawsuit with it. So now, how do
we continue to generate more revenue? Well, they started the
Thursday Night package, then they split the Thursday Night package
into two, Then they consolidated the Thursday Night package, all

(45:48):
while keeping the NFL network afloat and gave it to
Fox for more money. Even though the ratings didn't determine
it should be a worth more money, they still got
more out of it. They play more games in England,
They're gonna play a game in China, They played games
in Mexico City. Not only do these games generate revenue
in terms of the stadiums while taking away from the

(46:10):
revenue from these teams home stadiums, but also oftentimes gives
you a different TV window, which they can make more
money doing. But at some point you get tapped out.
At some point there's just no more we can do
with what we got. There's a limit in this market.
That's why they're talking about a team in London, because

(46:32):
a team in London, or whether you move Jacksonville to
that would again create a new TV window or do
and you don't even have to have a new team.
But players want more money. Players want guaranteed money. Guaranteed
money means more money because these guys are going to

(46:52):
get hurt, and even though it's covered by insurance, the
insurance is costly. The game is more physical, it's hard
to keep playing, is healthy, and yet everybody once more,
how do you get there? More regular season games, maybe
another playoff game? And the way you know we're working

(47:14):
that way is that Roger Goodell has floated earlier this week,
the idea of you know, four preseason games is too much,
two is more ideal. And I told you yesterday and
I'll tell you to you blue in the face. It
may sound like Rogers just being a good guy. Too
many games, too much contact, not great, you know, not

(47:36):
great for us to pay, Like do you really think
he's going to go to these cities who have helped
build these beautiful stadiums that go, hey, here's the thing now,
on am I taking away a regular season game and
sending it to London where you get nothing, or your
bar is getting nothing, your parking gets nothing, all your
vendors get nothing. But I'm also gonna take away a
preseason game. No, it's bad business. Here's them gonna do

(48:01):
we think away preseason game? No, he cares about your
regular season game. Eighteen games makes sense. We can push
back the Super Bowl, we can have the double buy
more is in fact more, more revenue, more money. Everybody's happy. Well,

(48:22):
there there is an issue there that is the underlying
issue to why sixteen is kind of a magic number.
This is Tony Dungee earlier today on Pro Football Talk.
I think it would be a mistake. I think one
of the things that's great about the NFL now is
every game matters. You've got these tight races. Games is

(48:43):
a lot. You want to get into the playoffs. You
want people to be ready to play meaningful games in January.
I'm watching the NBA playoffs now, and you see the
effect of this long season. Leonard limping up and down
the floor, Kevin Duran out, Thompson maybe out. That's not
what people want to see in the playoffs. I have

(49:04):
to think, you know, we would get some of the
same thing if you add more games, and I just
I don't think it would be good for the players.
I don't think it'd be good for the product. I
tend to agree with him. I don't know if the
Kauai Leonard comparison, considering Kauai missed missed all those games
with load management, is the parallel. The easiest one to

(49:25):
point to is the NFL. Look at the teams who
have quarterbacks or quarterbacks that are injured and how they
do in terms of the playoff race, usually very poorly.
And the more games means the more exposure. In addition
to which you already have older a run of older
quarterbacks who started to fade down the stretch, you might
not have the right personnel on the field late in

(49:46):
the playoffs. And if you don't, the Raiders didn't a
couple of years ago without Derek Carr. I know the
Eagles want to Super Bowl with without Carson Wentz, but
that's the exception, not the rule. You want the stars
playing when it adders most. It's one of the reasons
I believe you got you gotta cap it where we
are in college football. More games, you're gonna lose more players.

(50:07):
There's just the attrition of a football season. But the
reason we're talking about eighteen games is the same reason
that Roger Goodell is talking about eliminating two preseason games.
It all works together. And the way Rodger is gonna
sell it and the NFL owners are gonna sell it is, hey,
look we're gonna add more players to your everyday roster.

(50:29):
We had five spots. That's a hundred and sixty jobs.
And while the union heads may say no, no, no,
we want guarantee money, we want this, they go like, okay,
go back to your union. Tell one hundred and sixty
of your members that pay dues that are out of
work that they can't get an NFL job because you

(50:53):
want guaranteed contracts, which is going to be more expensive
and it's gonna keep us from hiring one hundred and
sixty new workers. It's all negotiation because the NFL is
kind of tapped out of there in terms of their
ability to go and squeeze money out of everybody for now,

(51:15):
and and also keep in mind that more regular season
games means redone TV contracts, redone apparel contracts, redone deals,
and every with every deal that gets done, it's not
like the owners get to keep all of that revenue.
There's a revenue split. So go back to your players

(51:37):
and go, hey, we don't want bigger contracts. We don't
want a hundred sixty more guys hired because we want
guaranteed contracts and we want to stay at sixteen you know, oh,
oh you want to you want to do away with
the marijuana policy. Fine, we'll do ay with the marijuana policy,
which in truth, they don't test you for we during
the season if you simply pass the one recreational drug

(51:59):
tests before the season, and we'll do away with that.
What we want is eighteen games. Metal World Peace joins
the show. Up coming next, we'll talk about tonight's game,
type of the Warriors playing without Kevin Durant, and we'll
get his sense of what the Lakers are going to
look like next year. Meta next, be sure to catch

got Lip Show, Fox Sports Training. Did you guys see
that what college basketball did today? I kind of like this,
I don't kind of like this. I really like this
moving back the three point line to the international three
point line, which is actually what they did when they
moved to three point line from the high school line

(53:25):
to the to the current three point line before they
moved it back. Just once they moved it back, um
the from from nine inches. This is going back like
five years ago. International was like whoa, whoa, whoa, we're
moving back. They're like both kind of moving away from

(53:47):
each other. So now it's gonna be one three quarters inches?
How how much further is that? It's like an inch
and a half or so. And while you're like, what's
the big deal, go ahead, go out there and check
it out. You know, corner three's are the corner three's
of the NBA now in college basketball, and the rest

(54:09):
of it will be much It just create better spacing.
We've got maybe a little bit to three point dominant.
And in the n I t um although there was
essentially the same number of three point field goals taken,
the percentage went down by two percentage points. They use
the n I t as like a trial ground. They're
also going to reset the shot clock on offensive rebounds

(54:31):
to only twenty seconds instead of to the straight thirty
five seconds in international competition. It's a second shot clock that,
like the NBA resets to fourteen. I like the fourteen
second reset. I've coached in it, played in it. It's
way better. It doesn't allow you to bring it out,
set it up. I get offends, rebound, go play. And

(54:54):
the way which you coach to that is you get
an offensive rebound, and if you don't have a layup,
let's take a three, because one of the defense is
all running towards the offensive boards, and two we don't
have time to come back and set it up. So
I like all of this. UM Coaches will also now

(55:15):
be allowed to call live ball timeouts in the last
two minutes of the second half and the last two
minutes of the overtime periods. Previously, coaches weren't allowed to
call any any live ball time outs during the game,
which means guy gets tied up, he's on the on
the ground. Coaching, come over, call of time out. You
used to not be able to You weren't for the
last like three years. You weren't able to do that

(55:36):
in college basketball. But moving back to three point line
makes a ton of sense. The only thing that I
would one of the rules I would change in the
NBA is I wish they had the one and one
and so the one plus one. Like everything about the
NBA is difficult, more difficult than any other part of basketball.

(55:56):
The lane line is wider because the players are better
and more skilled. The three point line is deeper because
the big players are better and more skilled. You only
get eight seconds to get it across half court. Because
the players is supposed to better and more skilled, the
shock lockey shorter, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. Why not have more
difficult or as difficult free throw shooting pressure by doing

(56:17):
a one on one right like the first once you
get into the bonus the first two or one on once.
Why not? Um? There was an outstanding documentary that had
its premiere last Friday night in l A. It's The
Run Our Test Story NBA player On Our Test now
known as a Metal World Piece to become an outspoken

(56:40):
advocate for the importance of mental health among athletes. You
can watch this show on showtime or on demand on Showtime.
It's really a remarkable journey through his life and met
us climb up to join us here in the Doug
Gottli Show on Fox Sports Radio. How are you doing?
Great to speak to you, been good man? What's it?

(57:01):
What's it like to see your story on a big screen?
Different it was. You saw a premiere on the premier
and we saw that just there the American Academy that
it was huge. You know, we have another premier in
New York at Blues Comports Office. It was you know,
a little bit smaller, and I was like, wow, the
first time I've ever been on the big screen if

(57:21):
I that long, and this is the actual movie, you know,
it's a movie. It's been kind of overwhelming. I'm looking
forward to I'm looking forward to the response and people,
you know, tell me where they think about it, and
looking forward to the next one. It's it's pretty brave
that some of the things you've done are are really
really brave. You know. Look, I'm sure you you made
a lot of money. You could just kind of go

(57:41):
on about your way, be be meta, kind of do
your thing, continue to raise mental health awareness. Why open
yourself up, uh and and share so much of your story.
I mean I didn't want to do it, but you know,
they came and they requested my story, you know, brief
reports working on uh some new initials and show time
and you know this, this story that they launched with me,

(58:05):
is gonna propel them to do more, uh more documentaries
like this. I was actually like, maybe, like a test
story is probably one of the first ones, and they're
gonna be doing more programming you know like this. So
I didn't It wasn't my idea. It was a thing
from you know, Bleach Report. Okay, So now that you've

(58:26):
seen it, were you like, man, I wish that part
wasn't in it? Are you there there any bitterness at
all in watching it some of some of the parts,
you know, some of the one that didn't want to visit.
But it's okay. You know that nobody's perfect. So I did.
I didn't only mind um having that much stuff inside?
So too many times people hide Oh so many times

(58:48):
people glamorized. He's on social media. The case's be living lifestyles.
They're not really living or lifestyles are It's just too
stressful to upkeep, you know. So I thought that you
get more vulnerability and more uh normalization, that it was
better matter world peace joining us Doug Gotli show, Fox
Sports Radio. Um, when when you watch the Warriors steal

(59:13):
a game and they don't have Clay, they don't have
k D. The Marcus plays more than people thought, they
don't have Kevon Looney, Like, is that does that say
more about them or more about Toronto? Kerry says more
about Terry carry steps up to the occasion. You know,
it's like you tell him he's a cocktail party he's
gonna come in the boat's hide, you know, you tell

(59:35):
him he's just going to the beach. He's gonna come
in the sandals, you know. And it's harder, the tougher competition,
the more adversity, the tougher he gets, he just locks in.
You know, he's he's an amazing player. It's hard to
prepare for him, and he could shoot the ball so well, Yeah,
he is an amazing player. It's also interesting that he's

(59:57):
you know, look, they're stereotypes of guys, right, like if
you grew up, you go to a private school, you
grew up, and you've got two parents home, you grew up,
and he's light skinned, like everybody thinks, well, he's got
to be soft and entitled and he's just a shooter.
But there is an inherent kind of toughness and to
nasty in him, which some sometimes gets overshadowed because of

(01:00:17):
the shots he makes. Yeah, I mean, you know what,
he's gotta be tough to consistently make shots like heaving
him now. I mean, so many things come into play
when you talk about basketball and mental toughness. Some people
got mental toughness that they probably been through a lot.
You know, you know, it's hard for them to focus.

(01:00:39):
You know, like I got, I got My mental toughness
is up there with the best of numb. But then
I also had other issues that led me to be distracted. Right,
But it doesn't really necessarily say I'm not mentally tough.
You know, he looked at Michael Jordan's mentally tough and
to grow up both parents. You know, Michael Jordan was
I don't think gang binging, you know, so, but that's

(01:01:04):
still toughness, right. Or you get a guy like um
Bubba whose brother was sad in my supper brothers who
I let no dad passed and they had tough homes,
so many toughness. You know, it's always in the person,
and you know you can never let you know, it's

(01:01:24):
hard to this place on one person wildest person is
movementally tough than the other. You know, it's all about timing.
And yeah, you kind of either have it or you don't, right, Yeah, yeah, definitely, Yeah,
either either either have it or you don't. Better work
peace showing us in the dug Otlip Show on Fox
Sports Radio. Um, okay, so they might not have Clay tonight.

(01:01:48):
How hard is it to play from by your from
your perspective on what seems like a pulled hamstring. Um,
it's hard a pull the hamstring, Yeah, I mean you
can get through it. If you're tough enough, you should
get through it. If you're good enough, you can get

(01:02:08):
through it. Uh, you know a strain A pull. No,
you can't get through that A strain, yes you can.
You can actually make it work. Um, what really helps
hamstring is if your hips is mobilize. So if he's
doing things to mobilize his hips and ankles, then when
he's running, you won't be using as much of the

(01:02:31):
hamstring muscle. But if you're not stretching, not necessarily starching
a hamsting. But if your hips is not stretched, ankles
are not setch, then you're handsing. It's gonna require more
more work. So you want to minimize the work of
the hamstring so you can actually place through it. And
I'm sure they have the doctors to execute that. Um.

(01:02:53):
What do you think of? What do you think of?
What's your personal opinion of Kauai? I? You know, I
think he needs the player. I don't think he's the
best player. I think the honest is the best is
the person on the favor. You don't put Kevin rant
in that conversation, seemed to have lost the metal world peace.

(01:03:15):
Were gonna go ahead your last part of the question,
I said, you don't put Katie in that conversation? You said,
do you think you honest is the best Katie's? I mean,
Kauai is your favorite? Where's Katie in that conversation? I
have to pick one. When you say one, you know
and you know it's as hard as so you know,
um Janice is the best? That is? I feel like

(01:03:38):
he can't be stopped. Wasn't he just didn't that just happen?
Said it wasn't. Didn't he just wasn't he just stopped?
I mean, like, look, he's he struggled to get to
the rim against Toronto and he show years old. No, no,
I'm not saying he's not eventually going to be better,
but his inability to consistently the basketball especially, but nobody

(01:04:02):
can shoot, nobody persistently. When they first came on, nobody
was able to shoot. Or Brown couldn't shoot, Magic couldn't shoot,
Jason Kidd couldn't shoot. And I trust the process. I
trust that he will be able to shoot. That kid
he hit some big shots in the playoffs. He hits
the three, so that shows you he's further ahead. And

(01:04:25):
last year, what happens, what happens with the Lakers this offseason?
Your opinion? He said, what happens with the Lakers this offseason?
Lakers gonna be great if you think about it. Um,
the Lakers, Uh, they finished fourth. Let's just say that

(01:04:46):
Bron Longo, don't get hurt, get finished her fourth. They share,
that'd be better. The roster is going to be better.
I think. I think bringing in Magic last year was
I thought that was smart. He he brought a lot
of excitement, you know to the Lakers, and um, I
think some of the free agents that they got, I
don't know if they would have gotten them. Maybe they
would have. And now that Magic has gone and you

(01:05:09):
have the new coach and Polink is gonna be kind
of kind of overseeing basketball operations. They're gonna they're gonna
attract more time. Lebron is he's been very very uh
stable throughout this uh you know kind of issues and
that's the type of player you were to play with,
you know, and everybody seeing everybody's really succused to be here. Uh,

(01:05:32):
and the fans. You know, I think we all made
it a little bit more than what it was. Um
every day trumping about it. Um. But the Lakers going
to be very, very good. I'm excited to be going
to the game to get some free tickets. But I
I mean, I get that we made it, but we

(01:05:53):
didn't we make a big deal because Magic. I mean, like, look,
Magic called Plinka backstabber. Magic called out everybody in the organization, like, look,
I love the Lakers, and then he killed the Lakers.
We're making a big deal because made a big deal back.
I don't mean, actually, I don't men put all that
on the media. Absolutely, it had something had to uh

(01:06:16):
make those stories come out. Um. But but I would
say maybe I'm more protective of the genie because I
feel like people was asking who's one of the organization
Jennie can't run organization Jennie, and they say she's not
like tough enough. I mean, if you know, if you
find your brother, I don't, I don't know what else tough.

(01:06:36):
I mean, she she clearly is tough enough, you know,
to run the organization. She she's more tougher than some men.
You know, what what what what? What? What man would that?
And I think like, you gotta give you know, her
opportunity to do what she does, and now she don't
have to give it. She's gonna do it anyway. She's
not listening to anyone. You know, she's running the franchise.

(01:06:58):
You know, her name was that Got Time. Nobody else
names on a sing So no matter what anybody says,
So how I sell about the Lake games um being
a lake of fan. I feel like they don't be okay.
I feel like then then there there wasn't the best
team last year, and this year I think they'll be
second or third. Great stuff Metal Metal World Peace. Check
out the documentary on Showtime the Ron Artest story Quiet Storm.

(01:07:19):

White Sox games. Won't want to finish the pitch walk

the two run bomb gives them the win. Two games
going on right now in the desert, Will Smith with

(01:08:24):
a two run home run, the Dodgers with a two
nothing leaded Arizona as they bat in the top of
the fourth inning, the potres trailing at home. Right now,
Philadelphia up one nothing, San Diego batting in the bottom
of the third Tonight, Game number three NBA Finals, Golden
State hosting Toronto. The series is tied at a game

(01:08:45):
of piece. Still no word on Clay Thompson. He will
be a true game time decision for the Warriors tonight.
Hondre Iguadala will be going rain today in Paris moved
the men's quarterfinals to Thursday, thus pushing the women's semifinals
to Friday. That, of course, at the French Open and
the Week three preseason game between the Raiders and Packers.
It will be played in Winnipeg, Manitoba. That he is

(01:09:07):
officially a Raiders home game. Now we're back to Doug

(01:09:33):
gottla Shell here on Fox Sports Radio. You know, I
on some level I feel bad for Steph Curry uh,
And on some level I feel like this has a
chance to be a really good education, really good education
to people. In the NBA. They talked about gravity. Gravity

(01:09:55):
is Steph has it, Clay has it, k D has it,
um and they have it as great as anybody. And
by gravity, it doesn't mean like the gravitational pull with reporters.
With fans. It's on the basketball floor. You have to
stay close to them because they're so good at shooting

(01:10:17):
the basketball that the only way to cut down on
those percentages is to constantly harass them, bump them, put
a hand in their face, and make them shoot lower
percentage shots. And so what you do is you you're
you tell got a lock and trail you you switch
and don't allow him to get the basketball. You run

(01:10:38):
a boxing one on it. When you take out potentially
the two other guys with the most gravity, Now it
cuts down your ability to get into the lane because
if somebody is close to you, the the obvious counter
to that is to drive him, shot, fake or crossover,

(01:11:01):
go buy him, get in the lane and finished with
the lamp or of help comes. Now you kick off
to a shooter. The reason that Kevin Durant came to
the Golden State Warriors was there wasn't anybody else with
the Oklahoma City Thunder who had gravity. So if you
go back and watch when they had three games to

(01:11:22):
one lead over the Warriors, every time he caught the ball,
there was a guy guarden him and then there was
another guy waiting for him at one of the elbows.
Sometimes too, and when you take away the guy sitting
in the lane. Some of it's by style, right Andre Goodala.
Occasionally we'll step stay outside. Sometimes he'll play on the

(01:11:44):
baseline and roll to the hoop. You throw it to Draymond,
and Draymond throws an alley oop to him. Right, you
ever seen that? That's because you commit two guys to
the basketball and a pick and roll. Steph Curry finds
the open man. You have a two on one on
the back side. Because all the rest of the guys
have gravity. Now you taking that gravity away. Yeah, Queen
Cook had three threes, but he's a guy. He's open

(01:12:05):
for a reason. Who else can shoot? Livingston's a midrange
threat only you, honest your EBCO not really Draymond Green
no gravity. What you're gonna see tonight, especially if Clay
Thompson doesn't play, is what it would look like if
Steph had his own team. His numbers will probably be obscene,

(01:12:28):
but they're not likely to be terribly competitive, let alone
beat the Toronto Raptors. Even though Kawhi Leonard is not
not right. They scored one basket in the last six
minutes of the game, and still one that's not working
out over the whole game. It's just not just not

(01:12:51):
and it's because the rest of his team guys don't
have gravity. Now, the reality of it is, if it
was Steph's team, you'd hopefully put a lot more are
shooting around him, a lot more length and shooting because
you still want to hide him defensively, and then you
want to allow him to move without the basketball and
when help comes, find the open shooter or find the
open cutter. So they should be a little bit better

(01:13:13):
offensively having non shooters cut but it's just a limitation
when you just don't have guys gravity coming out the bench. Yes,
ry music, So when k D went out, we knew
that those like Draymond talked about it extra possessions. You
got to try and distribute the ball in ways to
make up for that thirty five points a game that
he was missing. Even if Clay plays, you know, we

(01:13:35):
don't expect him to be a hundred percent, so you
can't expect him to have the same workload. So if
you're the Warriors, like, are you hoping that Draymond's taking
more shots? Like, where do those extra shots and possessions
sort of get spread out? Or you're just gonna do
like equal opportunity to everyone, uh, because like they're getting
so thin now. I think I don't think it's a

(01:13:56):
number of shots. I think it's the right shots you
want Draymond shooting. But there was a there was a
possession there, like the next to last possession before a
Guadala hit the shot. Quinn Cook was open, then he
hesitated through the Draymond was wide open through it. The
Queenn Cooke who was wide open through the Draymond who
was wide open, and neither of them wanted to shoot
the basketball like you should know you should. And Quinn
Cook's a much better shooter then Draymond is, so I

(01:14:21):
would I would say it's it's gonna be kind of
a group effort. But look, Draymond has to be more aggressive,
and he has to look to look to score and transition,
look to fake some of those handoffs to step Um
Boogie cousin is gonna get more shots. There'll be times
in which they go kind of old school post up
Boogie and let him eat and let guys like Steph
Curry rest. I think all of these things are in

(01:14:44):
fact on the table, all of them. But tonight's tonight,
which you'll see like this is what it's like if
Steph had his own team. And as much as you
can say, well, hey, Katie had Russell Westbrook the problem
was he just didn't have space. And when you give
a guy's space and he's that good and that talented
at doing scoring at all three levels, at the rim,

(01:15:04):
mid range and three point range at his size, he's unstoppable.
You put a second guy in the box, now he
becomes stoppable. Chris Carter thinks Baker Mayfield the Browns will
have one of the league's best offenses. I'll give you
my thoughts next. Be sure to catch live editions of

Another show on Fox Sports won Er Fox Sports Treity

(01:16:08):
we call it. And now this is Chris Carter on
First Things, First Mornings on Fox Sports One. In regards
to Baker Mayfield the Browns, this is the thing that
I think that people who don't really know the Browns.
The Browns are just a team on a on a
on a sheet of paper, and they just think it's
oh b J. They just think Baker Mayfield because they

(01:16:31):
get a lot of attention. But they really have some
quality players. First, it starts with their offensive line. When
I talk about Oh b J. If I talk about
Baker Mayfield, I have to do it in the totality
of everything else they have around it. This is the
most talented team that oh b J has been on.
It's the most talented quarterback that he's ever called passes from.

(01:16:54):
So I'm not expecting just from the numbers, but I'm
expecting where his body is was the reason why he
wasn't at the O t A S. He wanted to
work on some things. You have to remember, he's gotten
hurt the last two years. He wanted to work on
some things as far as his body before he started
getting on the field and have full physical contact as
far as developing as a football player. So that's why

(01:17:16):
he took this first year. He would have done that
with the Giants because at this point in his career
he believes it's really important for his foundation and he
doesn't want to get hurt like he has, which has
ended his last couple of seasons. So I look for
high expectations. It's not in fourteen hundred yards. It's not
in fifteen touchdowns. He's gonna have double digits and touchdowns

(01:17:37):
he's gonna have at least twelve yards. But as an offense,
they're gonna be one of the better offenses that we
have in the NFL. Yeah, I mean none of these
are bold, hot takes. I do we can get far
afield from from losing balance on O b J and
the reputation O b J and the reluctance to be

(01:17:59):
in leveland UM and and the reality that O b
J is a super super talented player. Right, I am
going to point out that though that, like has anybody
figured out, the Chargers have more offensive talent like Keenan
Allen has been a better, more consistent wide receiver, and

(01:18:21):
he's been healthy the last year and a half two
years where he wasn't healthy the previous four years of
four five previous years go back to college and which
the season was ended. You know, Melvin Gordon, Austin Ekeler
like better backfield in terms of being proven and being
eligible to play. Hunter Henry proven a tight end, and

(01:18:41):
then you throw a litany of other wide receivers like
Mike Williams over the other side, who that was the
second year but really his rookie year. We don't know
what happens with Kansas City as they we assume they're
gonna lose Tyreek Hill, but they still have probably the
best arm at quarterback. So even within the a f C.
Then you got the Steelers suit Ben Rothensberger is coming

(01:19:02):
off a five thousand yard passing year. They may not
have the names, but they've figured out a way, even
without um Levy on Bell last year, where you throw
five thoud yards, James Conner, Juju Smith, Schuster, they'll figure
They seem to James Washington, they seem to be on

(01:19:23):
the path to figuring it out, So I don't think
Chris Carter's hot taken, and I think that's accurate. I
do think that oh b j Uh wants to stay healthy,
is trying to work on his body so it doesn't
break down. I don't think Baker is had as good
a year as the reputation would tell you he had.
Then he had a bad year, And I think Baker

(01:19:43):
will play up with the better talent around him. But
he's not a perfect quarterback. You know, you build a
wall and he can't see over. Not a crazy athlete,
He doesn't have a crazy arm. His his leadership and
his acumen and ability to process and go through reads
is his true strength. Did you guys see this rescue

(01:20:05):
in Arizona that it was who does the blocker charge?
As Rex Chapman is the blocker charge. I just saw
it on TV as well, where they pick up like
a seventy two year old lady and they have her
like wrapped in a sleeping bag. It's a helicopter rescue
and all of a sudden, like she starts like spinning,
spinning around, and I think she she survived the rescue, right,

(01:20:28):
I would imagine, So can you imagine how sick you
would be. I was gonna say, I'm not sure that
would kill you, other than I guess if you need
rescuing because you're out on a hike, perhaps you're so
dehydrated or in circumstances that their airlifting you out of there.
Getting spun around a few hundred times, no matter of
thirty seconds might put you over the edge. But yeah,

(01:20:52):
that was that was something that was really really that
was really really something. Is that something that they could
earn into a lawsuit only if there's something like, hey,
you were supposed to save me and now I have
like vertigo or like a concussion or I don't even know,
sick as a dog. I can't stop vomiting for the

(01:21:15):
next two days because I'm so dizzy. What you would you?
What else do you want to get into? Yet, I
just feel like another thing with the Browns that people
aren't always taken into consideration. I feel like most of
their players are relatively young, and that's not normally what wins,
not only in the NFL, but usually in pro sports.

(01:21:37):
I mean, Jarvis Landry has got to be one of
the more veteran players. Maybe some guys on their offensive look,
but I also think that this is a lot Like
we talked kind of about coaching staffs, all right, we're
all has to kind of work together. Like a lot
of this was put together. You got Baker's a strong personality,
you got Jarvis Landry's best friend. They need his talent.
It is Cleveland, so there's not the bright lights and

(01:21:57):
big city of New York City. Like if it's gonna
work for ro b J, feels like this would be
a place that it could work. This would be an
environment in which it can work. Still doesn't mean it works,
but could be an environment in which it works. But yeah,
younger play, Like you don't usually win with younger dudes.
You just don't. You need veteran guys. It's not like
you know, it's it's not purely about athletic ability and

(01:22:20):
fantasy points. It's about blocking and tackling and not turning
the football over. And you also generally don't win with
a younger quarterback. Although we've seen it happened more more. Uh,
you see it happen more recently. But you also don't
want to win with Instagram followers or Twitter love or
you know, retweets and likes. I haven't spent much any

(01:22:44):
time on the NBA switching from owner to some other
thing because I feel like it's I just feel like
it's one of these conversations which if you really feel
like the term owner in the NBA is an offensive term,

(01:23:05):
what ends up happening is now any legitimate conversation we
have about insensitive or offensive language kind of goes by
the way side, because you'll lose people. Even if you
could make an argument which I'm gonna disagree with it, like, look,
you don't have to say owner like okay, but if
you own a restaurant, that doesn't mean you own the
people working for you. Has nothing to do with slavor.

(01:23:27):
If you own a like, it's just a it's a
stupid argument which is intended to incite things. That's why
I haven't brought it up. Kyrie Irving, Steph Curry why
they're like and dissimilar. Next. Fox Sports Radio has the

NBA Finals continue tonight, with Golden State hosting Toronto for

(01:24:11):
Game three. The series tied at a game apiece, the
Warriors battling a lot of injuries. No Kevin Durant tonight,
maybe no Clay Thompson. Here's Steph Curry. We all just
understand the moment. We're very locked in and focus on
adapting to the circumstances that are thrown at us right
now with you know a lot of injuries and kind
of uncertainty of you know, even who who's gonna be
able to play. So we've been through a lot, had

(01:24:33):
a lot of different experiences. Is this just you know,
adding to that book. So we gotta be ready. It
gets started in Oakland at nine o'clock Eastern time. San
Diego gets a three run homer from Josh Naylor. Will
Myer's next up, he gets a solo shot. They lead
to Philadelphia for to as the potres bat with two
on in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the Desert,
Arizona gets to David peralta RBI double. The Dodgers still lead,

(01:24:56):
though to one in the bottom of the fifth I'm
Ralph Irvin. What up to God Leave Show? Fox Sports Radio.

(01:25:18):
The Doug Ollam Show is brought to you by Farmers.
At Farmers, we've seen almost everything, so we know how
to cover almost anything when the game time. I have
experienced player help you stay out of the game with
their experience in the play At Farmers dot com, we
are Farmers. Well, we've gotten to this weird place where
suddenly now Steph Curry has haters. Are you familiar with this?

(01:25:42):
Do you know? Now there will be people that want
to point me and paint me as a hater because
I underrated staff coming out of college that somehow when
I've said, hey, one of the reasons he hasn't always
been as great in the playoffs as he has in
the regular season is because the physical out of the
playoffs and the fact that people go at him defensively

(01:26:03):
and they try and expose him defensively. Um, but that's
not being a hater. That's simply explaining to you why
they needed Kevin Durant, who you can be physical with,
and that used to be the m O for Kevin Durant.
You push him off the spot, and now he's gotten stronger.

(01:26:24):
He's developed his His post of game is ball handling,
where if you put a big, strong guy on him,
he'll go buy you, like he did to p. J. Tucker.
You put a little guy, he posts you. But I
wasn't aware. Here. Here's what I think is really stupid
in the media, and I point to mostly entertainment shows

(01:26:45):
where they bring up a story and then they'll post
on their show like Entertainment Tonight, like you're an idiot
one to three four says Jennifer Lopez is too old
to be wearing that dress. Jennifer Lopez responded, like nobody
should care what You're an idiot one two three four says.

(01:27:07):
But but somehow it's it's not the social media. It's
our reaction to the reaction on the social media, as
if it matters. Yeah, social media, you're gonna have some
haters and some losers on there. I told you the
story before. I have a friend who works with USA Basketball,

(01:27:29):
and he said, we've had the best players on Earth
since when the Dream Team came to Fruition, and this
year they're going to the World Cup. Next year, you'll
have the Olympics. Right since n we've had all the

(01:27:50):
biggest debates, and and Jordan is the best player. K
D has been the best player the last two or
three times in which he's played. But the best per
and they believe, is Steph Curry in comparison to how
big a superstar he is and how he handles everything.
I've never heard any of the the hater rate. Here's

(01:28:14):
Steph responding earlier today. I don't need anybody's validation or
praise or them to hype me up as other people
in the league. I know who I am. I always say,
confident in my abilities and and appreciative of the stage
that I get to play on alongside of my teammates,
you know, especially these last five years. So whatever comes

(01:28:36):
with that territory doesn't really bother me. Whether I'm liked
or disliked, or whether people respect my game or value
for what you know, what it is, doesn't doesn't really matter.
Does somebody not respect Steph Curry's game? Like? Has that
ever been uttered by any human being? Like this is

(01:29:00):
we are? We are all idiots are taking the bait.
Don't get me wrong. The morning sports shows we have,
they'll generate some artificial debate, you know that they run
out of things to talk about, and so they put
people in, you know, they like Andre goodala is a

(01:29:20):
Hall of Famer, Like, okay, nobody, you know what here,
here's one of the things nobody wants to do. Nobody
wants to go like no. Honestly, this is why I
need to be on one of those debate shows because
I can just go, you know what, No. And when

(01:29:40):
somebody says, well, what's the reward for a guy doing
all these little things and only getting to hit the
big shots a championship, a big freaking ring and a
huge paycheck? Andre goodalas makes huge money Like he's not.
It's not like he's making a million dollars year. Just
happens to but he's not a Hall of famer hall

(01:30:03):
of famer. Should are you one of the five or
ten best players in the league for five or ten years?
That's generally who they should be, right like you should
be have been an m v P or had a
chance to be an m v P. And then the
differences of those guys, the best of the best, the
best own We've we've blurred the line some. I mean,

(01:30:26):
Reggie Miller was only a third team All NBA once
or twice never first or second team n b A.
If Reggie Miller wasn't on TV and didn't go crazy
in eight seconds in mad in Madison Square Garden, he's
probably not a Hall of Famer. And he was a
tremendous player. It's had a way better career than Andrea
Gudala and and you know Trace McGrady, who couldn't get

(01:30:50):
out of the first round of the playoffs. Like again,
I didn't say won a championship. I didn't say got
to the finals. I didn't say got the conference finals.
His team's never ever got out of the first round
of the playoffs ever. Well, you know, yao ming he
was unlucky dude. He was in three different franchises, he

(01:31:10):
had other guys with him. He couldn't get out of
the first round. But we we do this, we we
we do this idiot thing where we're like overreacted. Well,
I don't know it's morning TV in sports, or if
it's early sports radio and guys that don't know what
they're talking about, or or I honestly think it's social media.

(01:31:31):
The haters like responding. Even Steph really kind of felt
like he was just responding to a question which wasn't reality.
Do guys think he's the best player in the NBA? No,
I generally think that they believe the guys who can
guard multiple positions and and control the ball control the

(01:31:52):
game even the way he does offensively, but but have
a bigger impact defensively. And frankly that the three point
shot and uh, this generation's embracing of it. Totally choose
to excuse the stats. What's what's fascinating is right now,
if they won the series, they've only won one game,

(01:32:14):
he would win the m v P, and he only
the game he played well in. They didn't win the
game he didn't shoot well in. I actually thought he
played a really good overall game, but he shot a
terrible percentage and they completely took him out of the
game in the fourth quarter when it's supposed to matter most,
which is what you should do. But that's not indicative

(01:32:34):
of any sort of series m v P. Right, do
you know somebody who doesn't like Steph Curry? Like? You
may not think he's the best or love him like
Warriors fans love him, But do you know anybody who's
like a true hater like Steph Curry sucks? I don't
know that person actually exists on this planet. Most people,

(01:32:57):
every time Steph Curry shoots, you think it's going in
and you're kind of let down and bummed out when
he misses. That's that's really you know, You're like, I'm
more surprised when he misses than when he makes, no
matter how crazy it is. And and the reason that is, honestly,
is not just because of the shots he's made. End

(01:33:18):
of quarter, when he takes a half court shot, you'll
hold your breath. Why because you watched him on social
media make it. He didn't make it that much. So
I'm convinced that we're doing this dumb thing they do
in entertainment television now in sports. We're taking what some
person says on social media whose opinion we have no

(01:33:41):
reason to to to take as valid, and we're we're
putting it up there with real legitimate analysis and opinions.
If saying you don't think he's the best player in
the league, or he's a true point guard, or that
he plays a ton of defense is being a hater,
well then that's just being a hater. I would call

(01:34:03):
that analysis. But the only people I know who think
he's not any good or who or or or hate
on him per se, are in fact nameless, faceless people
who are on social media whose opinions I don't believe
matter to Steph Curry should matter to you and me,

(01:34:25):
and aren't worthy of our discussion. And I kind of
felt like that was his nice way of saying it
when he said it, And and the and the great
thing about Steph versus Kyrie is like I have the
I get the sense that Kyrie Irving spent this entire

(01:34:45):
year trying to prove to us he was something that
we didn't think he was. He was a leader, that
he could take over a game, late, that he could
into he could be an alpha, he could lead a team.
This is not who he is. Hack. He tried to
prove to everybody he could play defense on the best

(01:35:08):
player in the NBA in the regular season, I'm honest,
and he got embarrassed when he did so. The difference
in in Steph and Kyrie is Steph is gonna take
that press conference and just continue to be who he is.
Think about what he said at the end, like, you
know whatever, I can't control what other people think. Steph

(01:35:31):
knows who he is, does what he does, and doesn't
try and do what he can't do. Kyrie spends his
entire year trying to convince us that we're wrong about
him as a leader, we're wrong about as a defensive player,
we're wrong about him as a true point guard, and
we're not. Your strengths are your strengths, and the best

(01:35:53):
of the best play to those strengths. Raptors insider Josh
Lewinburg joins the show. Coming next, what happened at the
end of game one and how are they going to

Doug got Limp Show, Fox Sports Radio. Josh Louenburg is
a Raptors insider for for TSN in Toronto, following on
Twitter at ja lu ten fifty. He is absolutely outstanding.

(01:37:02):
H Josh, thanks so much for joining us. Before we
get to the Warriors and the matchups and everything else,
what's what's going on with Kwai Leonard in terms of
not looking like he's Yeah, there is something that people
stopped talking about here. That was the story in the
conference finals. But in the finals it's all been Kevin Durant,
Clay Thompson and Kavan Loony and all the Warriors injuries.

(01:37:24):
But we forget the Raptors are far from a hundred
percent as well. I mean, that's probably just the reality
at this time of the year, I guess. But yeah,
Kauai has been dealing with a leg injury, and up
until recently we didn't really know what that meant. The
lake could mean anything, knee, calf, quad, whatever. It sounds
like it's the knee. He's experiencing some knee tendonitis which
may or may not have resulted from overcompensating from that

(01:37:45):
old quad injury. So it sounds like something that he's
been dealing with for a while may have even been
uh something that he had been battling to some degree
during the regular season, but obviously it's not keeping him
off the court. I think he put it best yesterday
and said, listen, it's this time of the year. If
you can, you better be out there. He has been
out there. He hasn't quite looked like himself over the
last few games. And I only say that because he's

(01:38:06):
set the bar so incredibly high for himself earlier this postseason.
But he's still been great and clearly he plans on
playing through it. Uh okay, so um, what do they
think went so wrong when they had that lead and
had had complete control of the game in Game two?
It's the third quarter Warriors. I mean, as good as

(01:38:29):
Golden State is, they might be the best word zeroing
in on one part of the game. They might be
the best third quarter team we've ever seen. The Raptors
knew that this was gonna happen. I mean, you expect
that when you play Golden State that they're gonna come
out of the break and go on a big run.
But they've never done this before. In fact, nobody has
ever done this before. The eight team to oh run
that they started the third quarter with is the biggest

(01:38:51):
run in NBA Finals history. The Raptors, I mean, I
think for them, it started actually on the offensive end.
You think eighteen oh run, and normally it's like, okay,
well what went wrong defensively, but against Golden State, like,
your offense has to be good, You've got to be
hitting shots, because the second you don't, the second year
offense drives up. All of a sudden, the Warriors are
are getting the rebound, getting out in the break, running

(01:39:13):
and um and then wants to start snowballing. It's really
tough to recover from that. Those runs we know are
so demoralizing, and I think that's what happened for the
Raptors here. So I thought they did a really good
job in Game one of sort of expecting those punches
from the Warriors. They went on their runs. Golden State
did it was like six oh, eight oh, and then
the Raptors would answer. They helped their composure, they didn't fold,

(01:39:34):
they didn't panic, and that's what I think they did
for the most part in Game two, with the exception
notable exception of that third quarter run. So that's what
they have to recover from. Here in Game three is
just not panicking, staying strong and and ultimately they've got
a hit shots because the second they don't, the Warriors
get gone. What did the Warriors do defensively? Though they
went six minutes without a bucket to start the second half,

(01:39:55):
what they do defensively? I just think they were more active.
I mean the Raptors, I think a lot of it
had to do with them as well. The ball stopped moving, um,
it was stagging it in the Raptors. Over the years,
I mean we've seen this from their offense. Once they
stopped moving the ball, they've become kind of predictable, easier
to stop. But I don't want to take any credit
away from the Warriors. I mean, defensively, they've got the

(01:40:15):
talent um. I think we've seen this over the last
few years too of it. When they're locked in, they're
almost as good defensively as they are offensively. So I
thought they were a little bit more physical and the
Raptors didn't show a ton of of mental toughness in
that moment. Offensive toughness overcoming and matching that physicality. And
I think the foul trouble probably heard as well. They

(01:40:37):
weren't playing as hard as they were the rest of
the first I should say game and a half of
the series. Doug gotlib show here on Fox Sports, Ray
Josh Louinburg joining US Raptors inside or ts N in Toronto.
Falm on Twitter at j lou ten fifty. Are they
expecting Clay Thompson play tonight? I would be shocked if
Clay didn't play tonight. I would be equally as shocked

(01:40:59):
if you anywhere close to acent. I mean, just based
on watching him yesterday. He wasn't especially mobile, but he
was out there taking shots. And we know Clay well
enough now to know that at this time of the year,
if he's out like I was staying with Kauai, if
he can run, if he can be out there, he
will be out there. He'll play through it. But I
think the biggest question for me again is sort of

(01:41:21):
what what do we expect from him? Clearly he's gonna
still be able to hit shots. I mean that that's
not going to change as a result of the hamstring,
I don't think. But Clay his game is so predicated
on being able to move without the ball. That's how
he creates those shot opportunities and without being able to
do that. Uh. Fully, I'm not sure that those shots

(01:41:42):
are gonna be there for him, So I would expect
him to play, but I think he's gonna be limited
in this one, even if he does play his full
amount of minutes. Doug gotlib show here on Fox Sports Radio,
Josh Lowenberg joining us. All Right, so they used a
boxing one at the end of game two. What are

(01:42:04):
the tricks you think Nick Nurse has up a sleeve. Well,
we certainly weren't expecting that one. It didn't seem like
the Warriors were either. I mean it was a surprise.
If we haven't seen it from the Raptors this season,
we haven't really seen it from anyone. UM. In the
n B a is Steve Kerr was saying he hasn't
seen it since he was in college. Um, but it's

(01:42:25):
something that Nick Nurse has shown all the year that
he's willing to be unpredictable and innovative and trust his
his team to go out there and execute things like that.
I don't think we see it again. Um, So much
of its effectiveness is just catching the other team off guard.
Clearly it did, and that's why I think it was effective.

(01:42:45):
At this point, the Warriors are expecting, I would say expecting,
but they're prepared for it. And as Draymond was saying yesterday,
if they see it again, uh, they can carve it up.
So yeah, I don't think we see that trick again,
but clearly Nurse has ann of tricks up his sleeve,
and I think they'll need it. Um going up against
this team on their home court of second or third

(01:43:06):
last game in the Oracle, this is gonna be a
tough one one. I think the Raptors can win, especially
with the Warriors banged up, but I'm really looking forward
to this. I think Brian Winehorse said it best earlier
today is that, uh, this Finals for the first time
in a long time, feels like it's unpredictable, and a
lot of that has to do with the Warrior's injury
sort of leveling the playoffs the playing field. But at

(01:43:27):
this point, especially tonight, I have no idea what to expect,
and even in terms of the series from here on out,
I think both teams have a reasonably even chance at
winning this series. How how big is tonight for the Raptors, right,
Like you lose that one at home you do feel
like CAD's coming back. You don't know healthy'll be, but
you you feel like you gotta you gotta wounded Warriors team.

(01:43:50):
That's a little bit road weary. How big do you
think tonight is for the Raptors? Yeah, it's huge. And
I hate to go back to the injuries because that
kind of makes it sound like I'm diminishing what the
Raptors have accomplished and what they could accomplish if they
end up winning this series. But listen, this is just
the reality. The Warriors since adding k D have been
basically untouchable. And I know a lot of teams, probably

(01:44:12):
every one of the other twenty nine teams, including their Raptors,
at some point over that time, have said why bother?
Why go all in and try and compete, try and
chase for a championship, knowing that you're gonna run into
these guys in the end. But the argument for a
team like the Raptors to push their chips in was
always give yourself a chance and hope for a break
or two. Um, once you get once you get there, Uh,

(01:44:34):
this could be it, This could be the opportunity I
think at full strength, Uh, the Warriors would be very,
very tough to beat in a seven game series. But
we don't know how long KYD is. Oh, we don't
know how long Clay is going to be limited for.
This could be the opportunity. With all of that said, though,
the Raptors, I mean, the Warriors are still really good.
That's the thing. Even without k D, this might be

(01:44:55):
still one of the best teams we've ever seen. Um
they're still really looks. So I think the Raptors this
opens the door for them, but they still have to
go through that door. They still have to take advantage
of that opportunity. And that's why I think for all
the points you made their Doug, this game is huge
today because you don't know who's gonna be healthy, who's

(01:45:15):
gonna be in, or who's gonna be out for Game
four and beyond. What's the feeling in Toronto in regards
to Kauai in the future. I think people are are
starting to come around a little bit. And I think
as the months have gone on, as the weeks have
gone on, certainly in the postseason here, people are getting
more and more confident. Now. I reported towards the end

(01:45:37):
of the season about two months ago that the Raptors
had become increasingly confident in their chances of keeping Kawai
Leonard And the biggest reason why is because they've done
just about everything they can do on their end of things,
and now especially that they've made it as far as
they said that they were going to make it. This
was their goal was to compete for a championship. That
they're doing that now. But even going back further than that,

(01:45:59):
I they've handled his medical situation, his health situation perfectly
with the whole load management approach, the whole load management plan.
They've really built that mutual trust with him. And of
course the bottom line is they can offer him more
money than anybody else. And I think for Kauai, a
guy that first of all understands the value of a
dollar and appreciates it, and then also a guy that

(01:46:21):
doesn't seem to have a ton of confidence in his
long term health, I think being able to offer post
to two d million dollars in that extra year could
go a long way. So the Raptors have controlled everything
that they can control. Ultimately, in the end, Kauai could
decide I want to play at home, I want to
be in warm weather and in that case, the Raps
can't do anything about it. But I think for all

(01:46:43):
those reasons, I know the team is confident, and I
think the fans are starting to become a lot more
confident as well. Great stuff. Josh Lewinburg is Raptors insider
for TSN Toronto. Follow on Twitter at j lu ten fifty.
Enjoy the game tonight. We'll talk to you soon. All right,
dog taken. My friend Doug gottlib show rolls on here
on Fox Sports Radio. Let's check in with Ralph Ert

(01:47:04):
and find out what else is going on in the
world of sports. Ralph, well, thank you very much, Doug.
And the San Diego Potres have added to their lead
over Philadelphia and Tai France with an RBI single in
the fifth. They've not Jake Arietta out of the game,
and San Diego still threatening with two on They lead
Philadelphia five to two. Meanwhile, in the desert, the Dodgers
taken on Arizona and l A still with a to

(01:47:26):
one lead over the Diamondbacks as they make their way
to the seventh inning of play. Was Aureus already now?
Julio Aureus on the mound for l A earlier Tray
Turner with a game winning home run walk off shot
for two runs. Is Washington beats the White Sox six
to four for the Nationals. That's four straight wins tonight.

(01:47:48):
Of course, the NBA Playoffs continue Game three of the
Finals between Golden State and Toronto, the Warriors hosting this game.
They series tied at one, all of us the Warriors
without Kevin Durant, possibly without Clay Thompson. Here Steve Kirk
where he's grown as his awareness, his understanding of what
needs to happen, what what he needs to do when

(01:48:11):
other guys are out. But he's always been the same person.
I think that's the beauty of stuff. He doesn't change.
He's he's a rock, and our guys lean on him
all the time. They will tip it off at nine
o'clock Eastern time. We'll be back to Doug in ten seconds.
But first a word from Farmers Insurance. We know the
sound of a perfect hot air balloon landing and a

(01:48:34):
less than perfect one. We've seen it, covered it, doctor Farmers.
We are Farmers underwritten my Farmers truck Fire Insurance Exchanges
that affiliates products unavailable every state. Doug Ali Shell here
on Fox Sports Radio. H you know, you know the
So it's how he's interesting on how we do have

(01:48:55):
a tendency to lose sight of games in the middle, right,
the first game will somehow you know, sets the tone
for a series. We remember first games, we remember last games,
middle games. In many ways, may it canna be more interesting?
And I gotta tell you, like, if you're Toronto and

(01:49:20):
you can't win tonight coming off of what had to
be devastating to lose on Sunday night, it's just a
it's one of those feelings like nothing I can do
is ever good enough? Have you ever had that feeling
with somebody the nothing I can do is ever good
enough with that person feeling, Well, that's a hard one,

(01:49:41):
A hard feeling to overcome. What's the real feeling? But
when when it's hard to overcome? And I this is
one of which I know. It goes counter to every
normal thought you have of home court advantage because normally
you're like your Golden State, you didn't have home court

(01:50:02):
advantage coming in. Traditionally you play really well at home.
You have to win and protect your home court. But
I just I got it, Like Golden State, every time
they win extends the series. That increases the likelihood of
k D coming back. You feel better about where you are,

(01:50:25):
whereas when you're Toronto, if you can't win tonight, Oh
when can you win? When can you win? And Yeah,
you could absolutely sit of Clay Thompson tonight and almost
feel like you give one away. But if Clay says

(01:50:47):
he can go, you're not gonna keep him off the floor.
You just kind of play through, play through it and
hopefully it's just a strain, it's not a polar or tear,
if that's what it came back as. Uh. There's a
lot of talk about Anthony Davis and the fact that

(01:51:08):
he only has supposedly three teams on his wish list.
It's interesting. I heard Danny Age say something earlier today
and I one, I think he means it, and to
I think it also foreshadows what the Celtics intent is
with Anthony Davis as well. Take a listen to what

(01:51:28):
this is. The gentleal manager of the Boston Celtics, Danny Ainge,
when he was asked about Kyrie Irving and if Kyrie leaves,
he regrets making that trade. There's always risk in making deals,
and so we're not afraid of risk. We we made
a risk by trading for Kyrie, and no matter what
happens with Kyrie, we'll I'll never regret that. Let's move

(01:51:50):
on to the next deal. First of all, we do
remember the trade, right we were. Remember that he traded
Isaiah Thomas, who has barely played in the NBA since
he was coming off of a of a hip injury
that he eventually had to have surgery for. And everyone

(01:52:13):
else that everyone that was in that trade no longer
remember the Calves except for the pick, which became Colin Sexton. Okay,
like that one hurts a little bit. But it wasn't
like it was the number one overall pick. It wasn't
like it became Luca don Check. It wasn't like it
became uh DeAndre Ayden. Wasn't like it became I guess it.

(01:52:38):
You know, it was like it became Trey Young. So
you look at it and you sit there and go
as bad as it looks for the Celtics in that
they may have traded for a guy who stayed two
years and only played a year and a half, the
fact is they still won the trade and the risk

(01:53:00):
is is worth it If the worst thing is you
get him for two years and he ends up leaving
at the end of two years. That's the same thing
with Anthony Davis. I'm telling you right now, the Celtics
are still gonna try and trade for Anthony Davis, whether
he says he wants to go or not. It's not
just because of Paul George. Kevin Garnett didn't want to

(01:53:21):
be a Celtic. You guys remember this, When Kevin Garnett
was gonna be traded, he didn't want to be a
Celtic because he thought Boston was two racist of a town.
Now he loves the Celtics, and it doesn't mean that
Anthony Davis is gonna love Boston love. The Celtics are
love playing for Brad Stevens. But I don't believe that
Kyrie Irving is what's going to keep them from pursuing

(01:53:41):
Anthony Davis. It's all gonna be about how they what
what evaluation do they have for Anthony Davis. Who they
trade Jayson Tatum. I think they would And when you
hear Danny Ainge tak he's going to try and make

(01:54:02):
a move for Anthony Davis. Whether Anthony Davis says he
wants to stay or not. Yes. The thing that I
found interesting was as soon as Paul George resigned with
the Thunder, it's sort of became this whole like, oh, well, look,
you know, it's worth taking a risk, and now it
it's slightly The odds are going back and forth between

(01:54:25):
you know, Kwielinard leaving Quilt and staying Quilt and leaving.
But no one seems to acknowledge just how much the
fact that Kyrie is the type of person that, Hey,
it seemed like a great trade at the time. It
still is ultimately a good trade considering what they gave up.
And if he leaves, so does that mean players are
more likely to leave and more likely to stay? Like
whatever is the most recent thing to happen recently, bias, yes,

(01:54:48):
or whatever is the most prominent thing to happen right, Like,
there's a lot of different stuff that we don't pay
attention to, and or or whatever is the most public.
You know, the Lakers aren't the only front office that's
in a bit of disarray. The Raiders aren't the only
front office that has that. When there's a new general

(01:55:10):
manager is going to no longer retain their scouts scouts
run a year to year deal. But it just it's
just becoming public. Like all of these things which used
to remain private private, they get public. And when they
get public, people don't understand this is actually how the
business works, isn't it. Like the Wizards still don't even
have like the draft is in two weeks, don't have

(01:55:32):
a general manager. And I think Scotty Brooks is entering
the last year of his contract and he's like, and
they have uh constantly injured John wall is about to
make like forty million a year, right, But the Lakers
are the only team, Lakers the only team that are dysfunctional,
you know. So yeah, it's just it's this is what

(01:55:56):
it looks like behind the curtain when it gets peeled back.
Some people aren't ready for what they see. Some people
are ready for what they see. All right. Coming up

uh get you up to in the stories to day,
gets you ready for the games tonight. We do so

(01:57:19):
with the press, the press, Doug got Lip Show, Fox
Spoyts Radio. Ralph Irvin joins us Ralph, what you got
in the press? Well, Doug will start off with this
from Adrian Woharowski reporting with Ramona Shelburne that Golden State

(01:57:40):
would prefer Clay Thompson sit out Game three to protect
his sore hamstring for the rest of the finals, but
he wants to play tonight. The decision looms prior to
tip off. M interesting interesting, Um, well huh you know, like, look,

(01:58:04):
a guy knows his own body best, and if Clay
thinks he can go, then he can go. Like who
who are we to tell him? Like, hey, dude, you're
not healthy enough to do this. But I I completely
understand Golden State's logic, Right, you don't have Looney, you
feel like you're gonna get k d back. Maybe you know,

(01:58:25):
you let staff just go crazy tonight. You hope it
doesn't wear it down staff staff too badly. But this
this is a case of you are your own best
doctor and Clay Thompson seems to think he's okay. What
you don't want is you don't want him to to
to pull it or to tear it, and then you
never have him back, and then you you're completely dependent
upon Kevin Kevin Durant. You kind of get there there
since right, maybe you would have seen Kevin Durant had

(01:58:48):
they lost game two, but now they're willing to run
the risk of waiting until Game four until we see him,
even if they lose tonight. But is this a case
where you want to see if he can go and
know that he can't with four games to remaining after
that's just that's the problem is the problem with hamstrings
is like even when you feel like you're back, you

(01:59:10):
can be fine, you start running and then you feel
a pull and you're done, you know, for for two
or three weeks. So I think that he may say like,
I'm fine, but you just you don't even know even
if his word is I don't you know, they don't know.
He doesn't even know to be honest. Well, next up,
we we stay on the Warriors bench, where DeMarcus Cousins
admits that he he was thinking about quitting after injuring

(01:59:33):
his quad earlier in these playoffs, that he was ready
to quit. Yeah, I don't buy that, right, Like, was
there a moment in it where he's like, man, the
same worth it? I came back all the way this far.
Do I really think he was gonna quit basketball? Because
he tours achilles tendon and he tears his thigh muscle, Like, yeah,

(01:59:54):
I don't, I don't, he says, quote, I would be
lying to say I didn't really have to fight to
get back soon, Like I had to dig deep, I
had to do some soul searching, and you know, throughout
both injuries, it was times where I just you know,
I was like, forget it. Yeah, that's reasonable. It's like
there are there Look, there are days and when you
throw yourself a pity party, music through himself a pity party.

(02:00:16):
Just the other day he was it was actually, there
was cake, there are balloons. There was a clown that
really freaked me at the clown part. I'm just not
comfortable with pity. I was not there. Yeah, um, everyone
has pitty party days sometimes, guys that aren't injured with
multimillion dollar NBA contracts. But I just what else is
de Marcus Cousin gonna do other than play basketball now

(02:00:38):
that he's moving up into his athletic prime. Nothing. He's
a basketball player. It wasn't is it surprising and impressive
he came back this quickly? Sure? Sure, Vince Carter says
that he will play this coming season, but it will
be his last season. He will be retiring in Yeah,
he's gonna be a twenty second year, which will surpass

(02:00:58):
Robert Parish, Jerkin Vitsky and a bunch of these other
dudes that played twenty one years. Crazy. I remember Vince
We came in high school the same year and I
was being recruited by the University of Florida, and they
thought they were going to get him his front Florida.
He went to North Carolina and I've never seen him play,
and I just had heard about him, and then uh,
I saw him. We played against each other in the

(02:01:19):
Magic's Roundball Classic. He had won the dunk contest the
week before at the McDonald's game, and he was so
good that when he had one dunk in the Magic
Dunk Contest, everybody else quit. The greatest dunker as a
great player in the history of the NBA. Greatest dunker,
not the greatest player, greatest dunker, but greatest dunker was
a good player. There's other guys have been freaked dunkers,

(02:01:41):
but not really great players. He's both. Here's an interesting
situation though he is a free agent. Yep. So is
this a case where somebody like a Warriors might want
to bring your guy like that in and give, you know,
see what he can give him in a few minutes
a game. I mean, you look at their the way
that they rotate that roster. Maybe that he could get

(02:02:02):
that title. Maybe if he's gonna you know, if he's
gonna play for the league minimum. Yeah, I'm sure they
consider it. You know, I don't know how he got
like honestly, I know he had some games this year
when he was decent. I have no idea of he
guards anybody, but if you can make shots. I know
he looks good and warm ups and he's a good
dude with a high basketball like you. I mean, all
that fits, but can he actually play start? I say

(02:02:23):
that's the type of thing that some teams need to
get over the hump. Where's where's been over the hump?
Three left? No? No, No, I'm saying for others, for
other teams. Just the veteran guy that can do and
he give a couple of minutes and show himself a
few games of years. Yeah, he's gotta under He would
be a guy you'd think would accept his role. And
the one thing he can't say is like hey would
be getting his veteran leadership because he's been there before.

(02:02:43):
He hasn't actually been there before and wont it. Colts
general manager Chris Ballard said that he knew Stanford's Bobby
Okey had been accused of sexual assault in when he
drafted the linebacker in April. He said he had that
he did know of Sure, you knew, he says. We

(02:03:04):
looked at it and talked about it and talking to
the young man. An incident from four years ago. This
no discipline by the university, and he was never charged
with a crime. And then you look at his track
record from then to now. He said, it was an
easy decision. Um, being accused of a crime is not
being convicted of a crime, you know, And you have

(02:03:26):
to have you have to paint the entire picture of
of the situation before you freak out, and like, look,
I would even tell you this. Here's here's something crazy.
You know, the Stanford the guys quote the Stanford rapist,
the swimmer. Right, do you know he was never actually
accused of right, I did not know that. No, he's
not convicted of right. His pants were never down, Nora

(02:03:46):
un zipped North, Nora un zipped by instrument and whatever. Yes,
but actually that's not what happens. Is we take a
story and we completely blow it up. Now, the reason
that guy became was the dad wrote this ridiculous letter
about how he wouldn't be able to steak You enjoy steak, right,
and then you heard. But but the the story is

(02:04:07):
that they were both drunk and he was assumed to
have been attempting to rape somebody. But there's no, there's
no he was never even accused of it, not this,
but he was found guilty of attempted right. Uh, this
guy was accused of but never convicted of, served no time,
not on probation, and so you know, it's it's kind

(02:04:30):
of like the Jamis Winston thing. Like I would love
to hold the Jamis Winston thing against him, but he
wasn't found guilty of a Title nine violation. He wasn't
found guilty, uh, in a court of it, never even
went to trial in a court law. So like, why
are we holding this against the guy who was drafted
when we've had four years since the accusation and there
was nothing before and nothing since. And you know, we're

(02:04:53):
we're a country where if you're not found guilty, you
are in fact not guilty, and you're a m to
be presumed to be innocent until proven guilty beyond a
reasonable doubt. So the Bears are using something called augusta silence.
Whenever a field goal is called for, no one talks
and it's completely silent, and you've got to deliver in

(02:05:16):
the clutch for as they're looking for a kicker. Um,
it's gotta be completely silent, completely silent. Sometimes that's harder
than when it's actually a lot of a lot of noise.
My senior year in college, they've got so quiet because
they wanted me to make a free throw that actually
commented to the uh to on like one of the

(02:05:39):
radio shows and one of the newspapers that like, I
actually liked it more than a little bit of noise.
So people started chanting, Doug, Doug, dug duck, when's the
free dene and it kind of helped for a while. Yeah,
Matt Naggie says, it's eerie. Silence is erie his erie,
so is Pennsylvania also has erie. And there's a lake

(02:06:00):
Harry indeed. Yeah, uh all right, So we'll see if
Clay plays tonight, if he plays, Warriors win, if he doesn't,
Rafters win. For We're back tomorrow in the Dug Out
