The Recapitate Podcast

Each series, comedians Lorna Bremner and Ian Dowling dive into one book - from classics to cult favourites - pulling apart the ideas, laughing at the state of the human condition, and searching for meaning in the mess. Because sometimes a good story is the only way to keep your head on straight.

This is the 2nd episode on "You Are Now Less Dumb" and it's all about how we manipulate ourselves and trick ourselves into feelings and behavours. Our brains are very clever, but sometimes they can get in the way... if you haven't heard episdoe 1 on this book, we reccomend you listen to that one first so you have some background, but you'll get the point regardless :)

Its a brand new series, and that means its a new book - one of my absolute favourites. You Are Now Less Dumb by David McRaney is an amazing book about all the ways our brains delude ourselves and trick us into thinking we're rational beings, when really, we're just making s#!t up. This episode explains the basis for the book and gives 5 specific examples as to why we're so dumb :)

In this episode it's just Lorna on her own talking about The Mastery of Love by Don Miguel Ruiz. This book is basically a continuation on from The Four Agreements, but with a focus on love and relationships - and in that spirit, Lorna calls several people she loves to discuss what love means to them.

In this episode we cover the 4 agreements that are outlined in the book, The Four Agreements, which are a simple set of guidelines to help you avoid living in a mental hell. They are:

  1. Be Impeccable with your word
  2. Don't take anything personally
  3. Don't make assumptions
  4. Always do your best

This is the first of 2 episodes on the simple yet life-changing book, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. In this episode we cover the fundamental Toltec philosophy about the nature of reality and human consciousness, what they call "Mitote" or The Dream. The idea is that human beings are the embodiment of creation, God, life itself, but our perception is covered by a smokey mist that makes it nearly impossible for us...

This week Ian was sick with the once-a-year man flu, so we didn't record a new episode - instead, we've compiled a few fun stories and ideas that were cut from previous episodes because we couldn't fit them all in. We discuss Ian's hotel quarantine experience during Covid, Lorna's confusing childhood & growing up in a Ski Resort, how to deal with a woman when she's all hormonal and nonsensical - PI...

This is the final episode on the book Sex at Dawn - we've been on quite a rollercoaster ride of emotions during this past month... is Polyamory a good idea, a recipe for disaster, or a dopamine fuelled nightmare?

This is episode 3 (of 4) about the controversial book, Sex at Dawn. In this episode, we discuss a bunch of wild and confronting facts about the human anatomy that  nearly made Ian jump ship from society and join a sex cult. The unique human anatomy lends to a concept called "Sperm competition" which is the key argument in the book that humans are not meant to be monogamous.

This is the 2nd of 3 episodes on Ryan Holiday's book, "Ego is the Enemy". In this episode we discuss the many pitfalls of Ego when you've achieved success, how you can avoid them, and some a lovely concept from John Vervake in the world of Cognitive Science called "modal confusion" as it relates to what he calls the "having mode" and "being mode".
