Speaker 1 (00:04):
Happy Tuesday. Welcome to the Fifth Thing, my bonus episode
to the Four Things podcast where I share emails that
you have sent in. Today, I'm going to go over
book recommendations, the Outweigh theme song about loving your body,
finding comfort while grieving, and the Mermaid hair wand and
heat protectant that I use. Now. We always start off
Tuesday episodes with a quote, and today's is from Tabitha Brown.
(00:28):
She always says this when she's signing off of her Instagram, which,
by the way, if you don't follow Tabitha on Instagram,
you're missing out on a lot of joy. But she says,
have a good day. But if you can't, don't you
dare go messing up anyone's day. Tabitha Brown, Okay, first
email is from Kelly and the subject of her email
(00:49):
to me was book recommendations and a quote. And I
was like, Okay, I'm here for this because I love
a good book and a good quote. She said, Hey,
Amy in True Four Things Amy Brown podcast Sushion, I
want to start out with a quote, Martin Luther said,
this quote but I read it in the book that
I recommended below called Anxious People. Martin Luther said, even
if I knew tomorrow the world would go to pieces,
(01:11):
I would still plant my apple tree. What perspective that is?
Any who I have? Maybe you should talk to someone
on my list, and I can't wait to read it.
Thanks for the recommendation. I absolutely love reading what other
people have loved, and I enjoy recommending books to others too.
I have two books for you to check out. The
first is Anxious People by Frederick Backman. It is a
(01:32):
story about a bank robbery gone wrong and the quirky,
interesting people that get caught in the midst. It will
make you l O L but always has so many
nuggets of wisdom in the midst of a great story.
I thought of you when I was reading it because
they say the how do you read an elephant one
bite at a time? Quote? The first time I heard
that was from your podcast. Now. The second book is
(01:54):
Firefly Lane by Kristen Hannah. I read it years ago,
but recently reread it to get ready for the Netflix series.
It just aired last night and I planned to binge
it a S A P. If it's anything like the book,
it will be amazing. But read the book before you
watch the show. As always, love Love, Love, listening to
your podcast. Thank you for the encouragement and the light
you bring to my days, your pal Kelly. Now, Kelly,
(02:17):
thank you for the quote and the book recommendations. I
definitely appreciate them, and I know other listeners will too,
and I'll add Anxious People to my list. But as
for Firefly Lane, I'm not sure I will read the
book because I already started watching the show on Netflix,
and for me, it's hard to go back to a
book if I've already seen a show or a movie
(02:37):
that was based on the book. So I do love
the Netflix show. It really is good. I mean, Katherine
Heigel's in it. Heads up if y'all haven't seen it.
It's trending in one of the top ten shows in Netflix.
But it's got Katherine Heigel and Kristen Chalk and their
characters are Tolly and Kate, and it follows their friendship.
They meet his young girls and they grew up on
a street called Firefly Lane, hence the name, and then
(02:58):
they become and start a bowl and they've been friends
for decades, and the show goes back and forth through
the decades of their friendship. Like one minute you're in
the seventies and the next minutes two thousand three, the
next minute, you're somewhere in between all of that. It
took me about two episodes to get hooked, so heads
up on that. But then once you're in, you're in.
And I watched it as much as I could this
last weekend. I really feel like for me, Firefly Lane
(03:20):
came out at the right time because I definitely needed
something to get into. And that's my recommendation. I guess
Kelly saying read the books first, but if I were you,
go ahead and watch the Netflix series because it's so good.
Email number two is from Jennifer. Hey, I saw you
and Brittaney Spencer on Instagram working on the Outwegh podcast
theme song over the weekend. Will it be available to
(03:42):
download at any point? So, Jennifer, Yes, Brittany and I
got together on Saturday night to work on the song
and we ended up getting one verse and the chorus
fully done. We want to add another verse, but it
just takes a little bit of time to write it
all out and get it to where we want it.
But heads up, we have already added the chorus as
our official Outweigh podcast theme song, so you'll start hearing
(04:04):
the chorus every Saturday if you listen to that podcast.
So as of right now, the full song is something
that I plan on just playing here on a four
Things podcast episode from time to time for encouragement for
those that needed, if you've ever struggled with body image
or food issues, like I feel like it's a good
little anthem. And then of course we would play it
on the Outweigh podcast for sure, but I don't really
(04:25):
know if we would put it anywhere else. I mean,
I guess I could look into putting it on iTunes somehow.
I don't really know how that works, but I know
people that do, so I will look into that. Now.
I'll go ahead and play a clip of what we
have done so far. This is what we put up
on Instagram on Saturday. You can follow me on Instagram
at Radio Amy and see the video of me, Brittany
(04:47):
and stuff Shira performing it. Here's the club want to
wee God will never men well, the standards obsessing, oh
the girls and magazines. We miss out on family meals
around the table because my grandma Maade is bad, so
(05:10):
we're not able. We'll starting just to feed you out
and hunger I've acceptance, robs you love the joy those
my man's brain. I won't let my body outway away
everything that I'm made. I won't spend my life trying
to change. I'm going to love who I am. I
(05:32):
am strong, I feel free, I know where every part
of me is beautiful and that will always outway if
you feel it with your hands and the air shows
some love to the mirror work at there saying one
day at the time because you and die outwait yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, okay.
(05:57):
So hearing that clip back and reminds me that, yeah,
so you definitely need to go check out the video
because I could just hear Sashira's voice in there, and
you need to go see her performing this because she
is just the cutest. I know I'm biased because I'm
her mom, but she's awesome. Again. My instagram is at
Radio Amy, and I also loved that Stashira joined us
to sing it because she represents the kids out there
(06:19):
that also need this message. She's thirteen, so I hope
that she can remember to love her body throughout her
whole life as well, and to not sacrifice moments around
the table because good food was made by family members
that maybe use quote unquote bad foods that you can't have.
That was one of my favorite lines in the verse
of think you're missing out on family time around the
(06:42):
table because grandma made something bad, so you're not able.
I can't tell you how many meals I missed out on.
That line was inspired not because my grandma was cooking,
but meals that my dad made. Grandma just sounded better
in the song than my dad. But I mean that
was coming from experience. So just heads up. The Outweigh
podcast that Lisa and I host on Disordered Eating and
(07:04):
Eating Disorders goes up every Saturday, so I recommend you
check it out if you have ever struggled with body
image or food issues, and even if you haven't, it's
good to check out just to see what other women
or men around you might be going through. Email number
(07:30):
three is from Taylor. Hey, Amy, I'm listening to the
podcast today with Kimberly Schlapman, and it's exactly what I
needed to hear. I wrote you before about losing my
mother on December eighteenth of breast cancer. Well, I turned
thirty on Sunday and my mother was a birthday queen.
She never let a birthday go by without planning it
all out and making it amazing for us. So needless
(07:51):
to say, this is hard. Thirty feels like a big birthday,
and it's even harder without my mom, and even harder
that it's the first one after I lost her. So
thank you for that segment on grief. The Lord is
faithful to provide comfort and he definitely used your podcast
to comfort me today, just the reminder that I needed
to get through this and it won't always be this heavy.
(08:12):
Thank you both your friend Taylor Adams which Kimberly Schlatman,
is Kimberly from a little big town and she's amazing.
She's got the most angelic voice when she's singing and talking.
It's very gentle and comforting to hear. So if you
haven't listened to that episode, I encourage you to go
back and give it a listen. And yeah, one of
the things we touched on was grief, and Taylor, I
(08:33):
thank you so much for sharing your story. I know
how hard it can be to lose a mom. I mean,
my first birthday without my mom was hard to In fact,
my mom passed away on October and my sister's birthday
is October. So we woke up the following day after
our mom passed away, and it was very weird for
my sister. I mean, she she kind of felt like you.
(08:55):
She was waiting for my mom to pick up the
phone and call her and sing this birthday song, not
like the normal happy birthday song. My mom had a
special one that she would sing to us. But yeah,
my sister never got that phone call. And then a
few months later, my birthday rolled around and I never
got that phone call. So my mom was always the
person that I ran to for comfort and advice. I
(09:15):
guess I shouldn't say always, because I was awful to
her as a teenager, late teens, early twenties, but then
our relationship got really good, and yeah, she was one
of my best friends, and I'm grateful to have had
her in my life as long as I did. And
you know, I'm so glad to hear that you're leaning
on the Lord for comfort, because that's the best place,
in my opinion, that you can go to for comfort
(09:36):
as you move towards healing. So anytime we experience loss,
it's an opportunity for us to grow. And Taylor, these
feelings that you're having right now. They're so important, but
I want to assure you that the pain will not
last forever. It will get better. Now that doesn't mean
there won't be moments of sadness, but it will get better.
And remember, grief is not something that can be rushed
(09:59):
at all. It really looks different for every single person
out there. So I just encourage you to allow yourself
to feel anything and everything that comes up on your
birthday and every holiday after that that's gonna be hard
or non holiday. Sometimes just the normal average Tuesday is
going to give you all the fields, and I want
you to feel all of it, Like Cat de Fota says,
(10:21):
feel your feelings alright. Email number four is from Claire.
Do you use a heat protectant on your hair before
you use your hair wand also you mentioned on an
Instagram live or somewhere I can't remember where that you
now use one of those Mermaid ones. Can you tell
me which one you like specifically? Thinks in advance, So Claire, yes,
(10:42):
I use a heat protectant for sure. I use one
on my wet hair before I blow dry it, and
then I use like a spray that I put on
my dry hair before I use wands or flat irons.
Now the Mermaid wave wand thingy that I like is
the Allure three barrel curling iron wand it's pink, which
also makes it super cute. Maybe that's why I like
(11:04):
it more. But I don't just use the three barrel
wand though it's the whole process. I start with that
to get all of my hair wavy pretty quickly because
it can go fast, and which is awesome. You know,
I'll have tons of time to do my hair. And
then I take a few pieces randomly throughout my hair
and use a regular wand on them, and then, you know,
(11:25):
since I have curly hair heads up, I also have
to use a hair straightener for frizz, especially on the tips.
So yeah, I probably need to make a video because
you know, getting a messy beachy just out of bed
look takes a little more effort than it seems. But
the cool thing is I really only have to do
my hair like once a week, and then it's pretty
good for several days. You know. I may have to
(11:46):
freshen up a few pieces in the morning when I
wake up, but that goes super fast. Anyway, the main
question you were asking was about the Mermaid wand, which
is the three barrel wand thing that I was talking about,
and it definitely makes the process faster, So yes, I
highly reckon in that and some sort of heat protectant
when using it. I actually linked the pink three barrel
wand on my Amazon Favorites, so you can find a
(12:07):
link to that at Radio Amy dot com. And I
think my hair protectant is up there too. It's under
the beauty segment. You'll find that there. And then before
we go, I'll also mentioned that also at Radio Amy
dot com there's a link to our entire line of
four Things products, including our Four Things Gratitude Journal in
case you want to get the journal before we start
(12:28):
our Gratitude Challenge in March. Now, you do not need
the journal to participate. Always say that you can use
any all notebook that you have. But I just like
to remind everyone in case someone really does want the
journal and they procrastinate. That is definitely my m O.
I put things off that I need to order all
the time, So consider this your friendly reminder. Which PS.
Mary got these cute little custom conversation hearts that are
(12:51):
currently going out with all shot forward items which their
Instagram by the way is at the shot forward. If
you want to go give them a follow, but all
their orders for Valentine's Day, So if you order a S.
A P. You might get those cute little conversation hearts
in your order, but it really depends on when you're
listening to this episode. So all right, that's it for today.
I will talk to you on Thursday for Four Things
