After being kidnapped and spending days in captivity, Elthan meets some unlikely friends and discovers some uncomfortable truths about his father's disappearance, his future, and the dark history of how the blighting formed.
As Besswin and Elthan begin to settle into their new home, they are introduced to a third person who shares their abilities. Garrem begins to sheds more light on the possible cause of the blighting, the spread of evil, and Besswin and Elthan's connection to it all.
After traveling to a location where the espers are stronger, with the help of Garrem, Besswin finally discovers what his ability is and Elthan must learn to confront his fears in order to gain control over his own ability.
After returning to Respatha, Garrem makes another attempt to convince Jorun to rejoin the effort to awaken his powers. Elthan begins to have strange dreams and Besswin makes a surprising discovery that prompts the party to make a long journey through the blighted lands.
As the party is traveling, they come across signs of a village and decide to investigate. Garrem attempts to learn more from the woman they found alone in the blighting. Elthan and Besswin take this opportunity to explore their first village outside of the ones they called home before being forced to flee.
