在过去几十年中，中国一度获得了快速的经济发展，经济总量、综合国力和国际影响都大幅提升。然而，从 2012 年左右开始，经济增速开始明显放缓。新冠疫情以来，人们终于惊讶地发现经济似乎陷入了停滞、无力复苏。无论国内、国际，许多人都失去了对中国经济在目前政权、体系下恢复活力的信心。 巧合的是，2024 年诺贝尔经济学颁给了三位研究政治、经济制度对于国家 贫困与富裕影响的学者，达隆·阿西莫格鲁（Daron Acemoglu）、西蒙·约翰 逊（Simon Johnson）和吉姆·罗宾逊（James A. Robinson）。消息公布后，迅即引起国内不少网民的关注和讨论。 在 2013 年出版的《国家为什么会失败》一书中，阿西莫格鲁和罗宾逊区分了包容性与榨取性两种不同类型的政治 - 经济制度。前者与民主、法治、财产权的保护等联系在一起，促进国家的繁荣、发展。后者与专制、国家权力不受限制、财产权没有保障等联系在一起，导致国家的衰败和贫困。两位作者预言中国经济发展将不可持续。 阿西莫格鲁和罗宾逊的理论视角是否可以用于分析中国的经济？制度的不包容性是否、如何影响了中国的经济？目前的困境是否与制度性的榨取、掠夺有关？哪些因素在制约中国经济的发展？中国的经济是否已经登顶、国家可能从此转向衰败？ 就这些重要问题，《中国民主季刊》邀请到了罗斯高(Scott Rozelle)、史鹤凌、罗根·赖特 (Logan Wright)、莫之许、长平等 5 位专家与观察人士进行讨论，并请达隆 · 阿西莫格鲁教授本人做了回应。
