On today's bonus episode, I'm sharing one of my favorite hacks for building
healthy habits that actually last.
When we consider that the majority of our health comes down to the lifestyle
(02:16):
choices we make day in and day out, it can be pretty terrifying,
especially if we are one of those people that jump on and off of health habits
faster than a game of hot potato.
I want you to consider the consequences of the up and down pattern of those habits.
The reality is, is that we all have pretty good intentions when it comes to
(02:41):
eating healthy, drinking our water, staying active, all those good things.
But without good systems in place to actually make those things happen consistently,
that's really all they are.
Good intentions with zero results.
So how can we make healthy habits a daily reality? Habit stacking.
(03:06):
This concept of habit stacking has been around for quite some time,
but the phrase habit stacking was actually coined by James Clear in his book, Atomic Habits.
This is a book that I highly recommend to anyone who's really looking to transform
any positive or negative habits in their life.
(03:27):
It is full of so many good tips and tricks and science and mindset,
all the things on how to change your habits.
Now, habit stacking simply refers to using something that already occurs with
consistency in your life that acts as a trigger for another something that we want to incorporate,
(03:52):
but maybe it's something we struggle to make happen.
So this is a really helpful way to take advantage of the subconscious automatic
actions that we do every day and pair them with a more conscious,
intentional action that we desire to make automatic.
(04:13):
So one example that I personally use myself is I am automatically drawn to my
morning cup of coffee. It is ingrained in me to start my day that way.
But what I do is after I get my cup of coffee, I choose to use that as a trigger
(04:36):
to set the tone for the rest of my morning.
So I've chosen to create an intention that after I get my coffee,
I'm going to spend at least five minutes of quiet reflection or prayer in direct sunlight,
whether that be on my front porch or with my bedroom window open in my chair,
(04:59):
just somewhere where I can get sunlight directly in my eyes so that I am benefiting from that.
So once you've made this you
know adding something on to a subconscious
habit and that becomes established then
you can add on to that so for me that now looks like reading my affirmations
(05:25):
with my essential oil blend and
visualizing the specific actions that I'm taking toward goals in my life.
Now, this is a new addition to my morning routine.
It's still one I am having to be very intentional about practicing.
It has not become second nature yet. So I'm.
(05:48):
Like the habit of meditating and being in sun has become pretty second nature
to me because I've been doing it a while.
But the ones that I'm adding on to that, they're still not second nature.
So it takes time, but over time, you're going to see how one tiny simple habit
can lay the foundation for an entire flow of a transformational routine that
(06:13):
literally will change your life.
So in doing this, be sure to keep it down to a manageable amount of habits within
your routine, or you'll eventually just end up lost and it won't be benefiting you anymore. more.
So my challenge for you is to make a
list of all of the habits you perform subconsciously throughout your day,
(06:35):
and then be strategic and plan a new habit to intentionally incorporate along
with one of those automatic habits, wherever it makes the most sense.
And this is going to allow you to ease into creating a new pathway in your brain
for a conscious habit to become subconscious.
(06:57):
And if this is something you really want to try out and learn more about,
I encourage you to jump on the opportunity to join our morning routine challenge
starting September 1st, where you can learn more about how to actually go about
habit stacking for your morning routine.
