So how many of us have heard of affirmations?
I know that they've become very popular in recent years and I feel like in a lot
(02:19):
of ways they have the reputation for being these like magical chants that are
going to bring all of your dreams into reality.
And I do think that in some ways a lot of the affirmations that are taught and
(02:40):
encouraged out there are really very much like that and they can be very self-centered,
very unrealistic,
tapping into things that maybe aren't really all that great.
But I do want to talk today about affirmations in a positive light.
(03:03):
So let's talk about what are affirmations actually.
They are simply positive phrases or statements that we can use to challenge
negative narratives or unhelpful thoughts and behaviors.
So, one of the things that is really powerful about affirmations is that you
(03:26):
are using the power of speech to rewire your subconscious to be more inclined
to specific thoughts and outcomes. attempts.
Another thing is that it's a tool for breaking the cycle of negativity that
our brain is so naturally wired to gravitate towards, and it's really just the way our brain works.
(03:51):
But through the act of speaking certain phrases repeatedly, it can actually
change that pathway in our brains, and it can help promote positive beliefs and behaviors.
So you may be wondering, should Christians be using affirmations if they do
have the power to change our mind, our brain?
(04:15):
Well, it seems to me that God is way ahead of us as usual, because as I was
looking into the scriptures, just, you know, trying to gain biblical insight on this topic.
I was just really blown away with how many times the word tongue is used throughout the Bible.
(04:40):
And of course, it's a lot of times a negative reference to evil and how our
tongue can be used for evil.
But in Deuteronomy 6, we actually see God commanding the Israelites to,
not necessarily in the words affirmations, but in what they truly are.
(05:02):
He is telling them to use words that they are speaking and repeating in their daily lives.
And so the Lord was telling them that, you know, this is the passage that says,
you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength.
And the words that he had been commanding them should be on their heart.
(05:27):
And the way that he tells them to do that is to repeat them diligently to your
sons and speak of them when you sit in your house,
when you walk on the road, when you lie down when you
get up you shall also tie them as a sign to
your hand and be and they shall be as frontlets on
your forehead you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your
(05:51):
gates so god wanted their hearts to be so saturated with his words that That
he told them they had to repeatedly speak them,
talk about them, constantly make a point of reminding them wherever they went,
(06:15):
you know, however possible to remind them of who God was and what he wanted them to do.
And so I think that this has...
Demonstrates the power of using affirmations, using, you know,
(06:35):
in my mind, I think of post-it notes, honestly, all over wherever you need to
be reminded of these truths.
Another thing that I was looking at was James chapter three,
where it talks about the power of the tongue, how it's a fire.
(06:56):
And in 3 verse 2, it says, if anyone does not stumble in what he says,
he is a perfect man, able to reign in the whole body.
Now, if we put the bit into the horse's mouth so that it obeys,
we direct their whole body as well.
Look at the ships as well. Though they are so large and driven by strong winds,
(07:18):
they are nevertheless directed by a very small rudder,
wherever the inclination of the pilot determines
so also the tongue is
a small part of the body and yet it boasts
of great things see how great a
forest is set aflame by such a small fire and the tongue is a fire the very
(07:39):
world of unrighteousness the tongue is set among our body's parts as that which
defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of our life And it's set on fire by hell.
So it's very evident throughout the scriptures that our tongue has some serious power.
And we do have to be very cautious.
(08:03):
We have the choice to either let our tongue be used for good or for evil.
And I think that using affirmations based in truth found in scripture is a very
valuable way to prime our mind and our heart to be ready for God's work in our life.
(08:23):
And so one thing to keep in mind with affirmations is that if we create affirmations
that are so far from our current reality or what our values and beliefs are,
it's not going to benefit us.
So it's important to stick to these two rules when using affirmations.
(08:43):
Make it something that is based in truth.
Don't make an affirmation that's
some like fluffy thing that has no actual basis in truth or reality.
And then you also want to stay in in alignment with your overall values,
beliefs, and your purpose.
(09:05):
So if you start saying things to yourself that are actually out of alignment
with that, it's going to have a negative effect.
You're actually, you're going to know you're lying to yourself.
You're going to know that that's not actually benefiting you and it's not going to work.
If you haven't spent the time to discover what those are, your values,
(09:29):
beliefs, and purpose, I really encourage you to go deeper into that before you
begin creating any affirmations.
So I want to wrap up today's episode by sharing some affirmations with you that
can support your morning routine with the power of your tongue,
and specifically through the power of speaking scripture.
(09:51):
The first one comes from Mark 10, verse 26 through 28.
This is when Jesus was talking to his disciples about the very difficult thing
it was for the rich to be saved.
And they were shocked and they said, well, then who can be saved?
(10:14):
And so Jesus said, well, with people, it's impossible, but not with God,
for all things are possible with God.
So the affirmation that goes with this scripture is with God,
all is possible and all is all, right?
So if there's something that's on your heart that you desire and that you are
(10:40):
seeking God in that desire,
you could speak over that with God, you know, this thing, this thing that I'm
praying to God about, it's possible.
The second one is from Philippians 4.13, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
This is an affirmation that I have used many times in my motherhood.
(11:02):
And so you can use that as saying with Christ's strength. I am blank.
You can put in, you know, whatever it is that Christ has put on your heart to seek his strength in.
Another one is from Psalms 139.14. I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Your works are wonderful and I know that full well.
(11:25):
So you could use this as a reminder that you are uniquely and perfectly created
for the season that God has you in right now.
You could put in there whatever it is that you are seeking God and knowing that
he has created you uniquely and perfectly for.
(11:46):
In James 1.5, it says, if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God who gives
to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
So you can say that I trust God's wisdom in me to such and such.
That could be raising teenagers, knowing how to discipline your toddlers,
(12:12):
knowing whether certain financial decisions are right.
This is something that you could use for that.
And then the next one is Ephesians 2.10. We are his workmanship created in Christ
Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
(12:32):
So you can, from this scripture, you can create an affirmation that says,
I embrace my divine purpose to whatever fill in the blanks.
These are such powerful words to speak over your day.
And the more you choose to speak life and truth rather than allowing negativity
(12:52):
and the lies of the enemy to dominate your mind,
the more you will experience transformation that brings you closer and closer
to God's divine design for you.
So I really encourage you to pick one of these affirmations I shared today or
maybe you have a scripture that you really love and you want to create an affirmation
(13:12):
from that to use as a part of your morning routine, I think it will really bless you.
