Efter att ha erhållit visst förtroende från vaxskulptören Rogers, får nu Jones reda på var hans inspiration kommer ifrån. Tillsammans med sin närmaste assisten Oroabona, har Rogers utifrån ockulta skrifter rest till avlägsna platser på jorden och besökt de förmänskliga ruiner som döljer sig för de oinvigda. Deras senaste resa förde dem till alaska, där de under vildmarken fann miljoner år gamla ruiner, i vars centrum stod en enorm elfenbenstron, med en urtida, ursprunglig sak sittande i den.
En sak som de tog tillbaka till London, som Rogers nu försöker väcka till liv, med diverse metoder han läst i sina böcker.
Jones anser att karln uppenbarligen från vettet, och i ett försök att dra tillbaka honom till verkligheten, får Jones med på att spendera en natt i museet, för att bevisa att det inte finns något att frukta ensam i mörkret
