(00:01):
I hope you're keeping cool.
Now,
I know in the greater Seattle area we don't have a great need for air conditioning on a regular basis.
However,
it would be nice to have it when we want it.
I brought an expert onto the program today.
His name is Rodney Jessen from out day home services.
He does everything from a plumbing,
electrical and air conditioning,

(00:24):
um,
as well as heat.
So Rodney,
welcome to the show.
Hey,
it's good to be here,
Joe.
It's great to have you here.
So,
a lot of people think air conditioning don't need that all the time,
but it would be nice to have.
I know you install air conditioning systems in people's homes.

(00:44):
Tell us about it.
Well,
Seattle is a unique city.
It's,
uh,
I've been told the least air conditioned city in the United States.
You know,
we get a few months where it gets warm.
Sometimes it gets warm early.
It starts in June.
Uh,
a lot of the people that were raised here,
which is a small group of us now,
uh,
with our parents never even considered air conditioning.

(01:06):
They said the season was too short.
We'll just open a window,
maybe take a cold shower,
put a fan on and ride it out.
But,
uh,
it's a different world now.
Air conditioning has become more affordable.
And when I first had air conditioning,
I have to admit I didn't put it in,
I bought a home that had it installed brand new and I fell in love with it.

(01:27):
It wasn't just the cooling,
it was the de humidification and humidity.
Sometimes.
Seattle in the summer can become humid.
And the feeling when you walk into the house,
when it's not just cool,
but the deh humidification,
it's a comfort feeling.
It's air conditioning.
Exactly.
People will call it a comfort system.
And what a lot of people don't understand is when you're in a humid climate,

(01:53):
whether it's outside where you are or inside your home and you really notice it in the summertime in the basement,
there's a lot of humidity down there.
It gets kind of musty and wet.
Even though it may not be warm,
the humidity will carry more heat.
So if you remove the humidity,
you're more comfortable on your skin,
but you also don't actually have to be in as cool of a temperature.

(02:16):
Does that make sense?
Absolutely.
And if a person wants to think about how humidity works,
just think about getting out of a swimming pool in somewhere like Arizona where it's dry,
you can feel that cooling effect,
that water leaving your body instantly.
So,
because water changes temperature a lot slower than air.

(02:36):
We've got to get rid of that water.
That's why air conditioning dehumidifies first and then cools.
