Quantum on the Treadmill

Quantum on the Treadmill

Welcome to Quantum on the Treadmill. Over the past few months, I’ve been trying to understand quantum physics—and honestly, it hasn’t been easy. I’m not a physicist, and equations aren’t naturally how I think. Instead, I ask strange questions: Why whole numbers? What is Planck’s constant? And why did anyone believe these ideas in the first place? Most of these questions came to me while walking on the treadmill. So I began using AI to challenge my assumptions, explore the history, and help me make sense of the science. Then I realized I could automate almost the entire creative process without stepping off the treadmill—from capturing the conversation and organizing the ideas to creating the script, audio, and visuals. This series is an experiment in learning, exercise, AI, and curiosity.

Imagine Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, Erwin Schrödinger, and Max Born gathered around a café table, each explaining the discovery that pushed physics closer to the quantum revolution. Beginning with Planck’s desperate attempt to explain the glow of a furnace, this story traces how energy packets became photons, electron orbits became waves, waves became probabilities, and classical certainty gave...

This video traces humanity’s long journey from counting whole numbers to understanding the strange mathematics of quantum mechanics. Beginning with Kronecker’s famous phrase, “God made the integers,” it explores how Planck, Bohr, Schrödinger, and Heisenberg revealed that nature depends on both discrete quantities and continuous waves—a reconciliation that now forms the foundation of quantum computing.

A brief journey into the overlooked quantum history of sound, from classical vibrations to phonons, the discrete packets of energy that emerge from collective motion in materials. The story reveals how quantum mechanics is not only about particles but also about stable patterns and relationships that behave like objects in their own right.

The history of quantum mechanics is often told as a series of isolated breakthroughs. Max Planck discovered that energy comes in discrete packets. Erwin Schrödinger later described matter using waves. But between them stood Niels Bohr, the physicist who carried the quantum from light into the atom.

This video explains how Bohr confronted a fundamental problem in classical physics: an orbiting electron should radiate energy, ...

This podcast traces the remarkable journey from Newton’s particle theory to Thomas Young’s double-slit experiment, Maxwell’s electromagnetic waves, Planck’s quantum packets, and Einstein’s photons. Each breakthrough seemed to settle the debate, until the next experiment forced physicists to reconsider reality all over again.

At the center of the story is wave-particle duality: the unsettling dis...

Five weeks into Quantum on the Treadmill, I realized I could talk about Planck, Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg, and Schrödinger, but I still could not clearly explain the difference between quantum science, quantum physics, and quantum mechanics.

This video breaks down those three closely related terms in simple, nontechnical language.

Quantum science is the broad umbrella covering fields such as quantum computing, quantu...

Wolfgang Pauli entered quantum mechanics with a reputation for brilliance, brutal criticism, and an almost supernatural ability to expose weak ideas. His colleagues called him “The Wrath of God.”

But Pauli’s greatest contribution was not criticism. It was the Exclusion Principle: the rule that prevents two electrons from occupying exactly the same quantum state.

That simple restriction explains how e...

Quantum on the Treadmill began as part of a personal health journey. After undergoing coronary angioplasty and receiving two stents, I committed to improving my health. Over the next two months, I lost almost 25 pounds, lowered my average blood sugar to 118, and began using my treadmill time to finally understand quantum mechanics.

This checkpoint follows the development of quantum theory from Max Planck’s discovery of...

Quantum on the Treadmill is a series about learning quantum physics through curiosity, conversation, and movement. While walking on a treadmill, I use AI to explore the strange questions at the heart of quantum mechanics, follow the scientists who shaped it, and turn those discoveries into clear, approachable stories for people without a physics background.
