WHOA? Here we go, guys, let's go. It's time to
do another show. Crack open thebeer now talking about beer and the culture
that flows with it. Here's beerGuru James Simpson and Beer Logic's Chad Pilbeam.

(01:12):
All right, little disclaimer here, folks, that's false advertising. James
is not here with us today. He's uh no, we're not celebrating that
at all. But you may haveheard there was a hurricane in Houston and

(01:33):
James had some damage to his equipment, and uh well, we'll be passing
around a coffee can to collect somemoney to buy him and beer and beer.
Yes, we got to do that. But yeah, James out this
week, so holding the ship together. What's left of her anyway, I'm

(01:56):
your host on Mike number one,the beer logic guy, Chad Pilbeam and
the voice that you've become a littleaccustomed to hearing on a regular basis on
third mic our stunt beer livery nowhaving to step up. That's right,
set the clipboard down and put thehelmet on. Bill. It's time to
get in the game. I'm Mikenumber two, Harbor Light Bill, Harbor
Light Brewing Company. You know,he just normally just sticks around just to

(02:19):
drink beer and add you know, color commentary whenever we need him to.
But this week he was in theproduction meeting, he was in the research
room, he was doing his part. He was taking notes for crying out
loud. But welcome to once ontab Radio. As I said, before,
I am your host, the BeeroLogic guy, Chad Pilbeam, And
for the next two hours, well, Bill and I we're gonna we're gonna

(02:42):
try and float the ship. Iknow, I don't know if we should
be taught making water references. Ohno, yeah, especially after what they
flooding down there in Texas. Iknow this is crazy. So and for
those of you who aren't familiar,my studio located in Southwest Michigan, which
is where Harbor Light Brewery is andalso where Harbor Light Bill lives, just
outside of the downtown Allegan area. This is the Beer Logic World headquarters in

(03:07):
Drinking Emporium and we are happy tobring you this fine program. And as
I said, for the next twohours, we're gonna drink some beer.
We're gonna catch you up on everythingthat's happening in the world of beer.
But before we do, of course, we need to thank all of our
wonderful sponsors. And our sponsors includeTantrick Brewing Company, Superior Pest Control of

(03:27):
West Michigan bringing all the ten HacenInsurance Group, Cask Branding, the Backyard
Grill, and oh hey helping uskeep the lights on Harbor Light Brewing Company
appreciate that, and I mentioned CastBranding. They are the proud sponsors of
our fabulous and award winning podcast, which we have been doing now over ten

(03:51):
years. I want to think that. I know that's quite an achievement,
all growns up. And here's aquestion for you. Should a ten year
old be doing a beer podcast?Oh well, we'll get to that later
in the show. That's so wecall it tease, but that's what we'd
like to do. We like tothank all of our wonderful sponsors who bring
us this program for without them,we we're gonna be under some underpass just

(04:13):
begging people to listen to us.Say hey, hey, I got a
story to tell you about beer, and like, I don't care, got
to talk to somebody else. Idon't want to talk to you, but
we're gonna crack open a couple ofbeers. Bill, You're ready, absolutely,
I'm glad. Please. Bill.I'm gonna let you decide who's going
first, You or I. Who'syou're going? Bill? Look at Bill,
He's like, hey, I'm firstfor once. All right, tell

(04:34):
everybody what you just cracked open.It looks like from bells we've got the
special double cream stout, Special doublecream stout. It's a sweet stout blended
and brewed by Bell's Brewery. Ohyeah, I never heard of him.
Yeah, I'll take a splash there, all right, all right? And

(04:54):
uh so this is a double creamstout, so cream stout a little bit
should be a little bit smoother,a little bit creamier. Let's uh,
let's dive in here, Bill.It is nice, nice, got we
got. We gotta go deeper thanthat. We're gonna get thrown off the
air. What else does it say? Well, it's brewed with like ten
different specialty malts, which all ofthem are kind of chosen to make a

(05:17):
real rich mocha espresso type of flavorin there. And I think they hit
it pretty well. That's that's prettytasty beer, folks. He's not just
reading that off the bottle. Hecan taste all ten specialty malts. He's
got that palette kind of like James. Does you know I miss him this
week? It's a it's a it'sa heavy carry, you know, being
Mike one. He's uh, butyou know what, I do not envy

(05:39):
him right now. So for everybodydown in Houston, this pew week,
We're gonna say that the Bells DoubleSpecial cream Stout, which we just cracked
open to start the show. Thisis a toast to you, Houston and
to everybody in the Gulf Coast areawho had to deal with the hurricane.
I hope everyone came through, Okay, all right, So this sweet Stout

(06:00):
from Bells Comstock, Michigan. We'vehad plenty of Bells on the show,
and I've never had this beer before, though I've it was an actually really
good pick up at the store ifyou picked it up. But I like
cream ales and cream stout is cream. Everything's creamy. Yeah, it is
very creamy. Well, we're gonnawe're gonna tie that all in here here

(06:24):
because smooth beer. We're gonna tryand make smooth sailing. That's right,
another water reference. Yeah, Wellthat's because the beer that I'm bringing the
table. I brought this from everybody. If you know me anything about me,
I love yacht rock music. Andif I have to explain that,
don't worry. You're not going anywherefor a while because I'm gonna start explaining

(06:47):
it. So this is a beerfrom Proper Brewing Company. This comes to
us Oude of Utah, and Ihad one more in my fridge, and
it's grab your shades, boat shoesand the finest Hawaiian shirt and climb aboard
the juice box on deck with theDoobie bounce. It'll sweep you away and
all your worries, which is kindof what we need right now. But

(07:08):
this right here is a flaked Germanwheat juicy ipa. Yes, so this
right here comes in at a soliddoesn't tell me on the can Oh,
that's right, because it's in Utah. I don't think you're allowed to do
that. So yeah, so muchfor the cheater notes. We didn't do
all of our research bill, butI'm gonna go ahead and pour this into
the glass. Yeah, someone shouldhave looked that up. I blame myself

(07:30):
a research department. Anybody wants tointern for us and do research, reach
out to us. We'll give youthe emails for that later on. But
this beer is called yacht Rock JuiceBox from Proper Brewing Company a juicy IPA,
And I'm not gonna lie I boughtit because of the name. I'm
a yacht rock fan. I'm sureyou did, and I've I'm gonna say

(07:53):
it's my favorite juicy ipa ever becauseI love yacht rock and I don't want
to say anything bad with yacht rockin this But okay, well that's brought
to the table. We're gonna letthe We're gonna talk more about these beers
when we come back from break. But coming up on this episode. What's
on tap this week is Hulk Hogana racist and we'll banning non alcoholic beer
save our children. And what areyour thoughts about putting your wieners in beer?

(08:15):
Oh we'll explain all this and somuch more when we come back.
Well, that meetings suck. Wewonder you can't wait to get home?
Is there beers somewhere out there?Crack open that new Iba thinking about us
too? This is what's on tapradio. Back to James and Chad.

(08:37):
All right, everybody's got a beer. You got a beer, I got
a beer. We got a beer. You know who else has beer?
The Backyard Grill on the northwest sideof Houston. But when you're drinking,
you want to have something to eattoo, So go get yourself some grub
at the buyg. The menu isamazing. They've got all your Texas favorites,
like steaks, pahtahs chops, andit's all grilled on a wood by

(09:00):
grill. Got burgers, you gotwraps. Hey, if you're vegetarian,
they got salads, they got soups, homemade dishes, and specialties like smoky
the beer chicken. Oh yeah, smoked chicken injected with local beer. Sounds
delicious, right yeah, and don'tforget the green beans. I know you're
thinking, wait a minute, isthis guy just talking about all the grilled
stuff and you're gonna tell me toeat your veggies. Hey, mom said

(09:22):
eat your veggies. Over one hundreddifferent menu items, get the green beans,
Trust me, you won't regret it, and over one hundred different beers.
Head out to the backyard Grill inthe corner weston Jones Road on the
northwest side of Houston. Cheers. All right, welcome back to What's on
Tap Radio. If you're just tuningin and wondering what's going on with the

(09:48):
show, well I'm here to tellyou that things are a little different this
week. A little different because you'regetting my voice right away. I'm Mike
Number, I'm the bureologic guy,Chad Pilbeam, And you're wondering, wait,
where's the guy who carries the heavyload every week. Not here today,
He's not. Yeah, Hurricane Barrelcame through and really did a number

(10:13):
on our friends in Houston. AndJames lives on the southwest side of Houston,
the west side of Houston out therein Katie, Texas, and some
damage done out there, So he'ssafe. That's what I want to say.
I want to say for everybody whomanaged to stay safe during this I'm
very grateful to all our listeners outthere. Just beray that your damage to

(10:35):
your homes and everything that happened therefrom the hurricane is minimal. But we
don't want to dwell on the weatherthis week. No. In fact,
that's why we came back with alittle little bounce in our step. That's
right. First segment of the showbrought to you by our friends. And
see this is why James gets paidthe big bucks. Brought to you by

(10:56):
our friends at the backyard Grill. The backyard Grill located on the northwest side
of Houston. Got to get thoseplugs in, you know. That was
our first segment. Brought to thetable, Bill brought a beer. I
brought a beer. By the way, Speaking of which, Harbor Light Bill
on Mike number two, he's justhad to step up. He was sitting
on the bench, he had aclipboard taking notes backward baseball cap. He's

(11:16):
like, I never get to playin the game, and all of a
sudden, it's like, Bill,we got an injury. We need you
in the game now. And hestepped in. So not necessarily injury,
more of a power outage, butI'll take it. Power outage, equipment
failure, all the above, right, But anyway, here we are,
and like I said, we wantto think our friends at the Backyard Grill
who are up and running as well. They saw on their Facebook posts after

(11:41):
the storm came through they they wereopen, letting residents know that if they
needed a place to go to getfood, to get a drink, to
get power up your phone, youcould go in there. And you know,
they were helping out the community. So I want to thank the byg
on the northwest side of Houston.I really love people like that. Oh
yeah, that's why they've been inbusiness over twenty years. Because yep,

(12:03):
that's right, all right. Billstarted things off with real recap bell special
double cream stout. It's listed asa sweet Stout and it's very nice,
good malty. It's got that greatchocolate, it's got that great espresso flavors
coming out, very enjoyable beer. And speaking of smooth, here's the definition

(12:26):
of irony because yacht rock music,my favorite genre, is known for being
smooth. And then we had properbrewing company yacht Rock Juice Box, which
is an awesome beer can. It'san awesome name, it's an awesome theme.
Five percent juicy IPA, and Ithink Bill and I have a consensus

(12:48):
on this one. Wasn't my favoritejuicy ipa. It's not a drain pour
though. No, it's not flavorsgood. There's just not enough juice in
their juicy ipa. Oh wow,Bill's looking death and he's all about that
tropics. I remember that Bill broughta what was a blood orange or an
orange beer here, and I lookedat him and I'm like, thanks,
Bill, I'm not a big citrusguy. I think there's plenty of juice

(13:11):
in this, but I'm on thescale, I'm on the spectrum of being
I like very little juicy notes onthis, so this is plenty. But
as a juicy ip A, you'reexpecting a little bit more bold. You're
a little bit more just specific flavorsout of this, and the one was
this kind of one citrusy. No, Yeah, it just has a I

(13:33):
don't I don't know if it's aneast a yeast esther in this or what
it is, but there's there's athere's a flavor in it that I'm not
a big fan of. But uh, and maybe it's just because they put
this on the can, but theydid say that flaked. And of course
Bill would have tasted this right away, flaked in German wheat. He's like,
of course, there's flaked in Germanwheat in there. I'm a broom
master. I know what I'm doing. I don't know that. I don't

(13:56):
know that that helped it. It'ssupposed to add to the smooth this and
the creaminess of it is according tothe can, I don't find it very
drinkable. Crushable crush Yeah, butthe week also gives you a lot of
other proteins that stays suspended, whichgives you that hazy look to it.
All Right, Well that's how wekick things off again, brought to you

(14:18):
by the backyard girl that was broughtto the table our first segment. And
yeah, I just I haven't evenbeen able to get through to James on
a consistent basis because the cell phonehas gone down. So if I push
the wrong button here and the wholeshow just blows up, just know we
will. We'll clean up the dustlater. But we're going to try something

(14:41):
new this week. What's on TapRadio? First? Coming up right now,
the official What's on Tap Radio FunFact of the Week, brought to
you by Who's ever checked Clear? This week, welcome to What's on Tap
Perido Fun Fact of the Week.Wait a minute, that's not my voice.
Hold on the second here. Neverbefore have we put harbor light Bill

(15:07):
on the spot. But if he'sgonna carry his weight, well I gotta
gotta get it a try. Sochat, let's talk Seltzer's. Oh good.
My favorite subject to the whole thingis like, are you serious Seltzer's.
We're gonna talk fun fact of theweek. It's all about Seltzer's.
You get one chance to come offthe bench and you come into the game
with selt with a Seltzer. Ohthis is fun. Okay, all right?

(15:28):
So anyway, I'm reading about Seltzer'sand you can argue that the first
Seltzer was commercially produced around twenty thirteen. Hold on the twenty thirteen, Yeah,
that's that tracks kind of tracked aboutright. Well, there's this guy,
Nick Shields. Does he know us? No, I don't think so.

(15:50):
Anyway, so he's in Westport,Connecticut, and he's kind of touted
with making the first seltzer, spikedseltzer, he calls it, or the
one of the malternatives. Hold onit second, Hold on, Okay,
that's cool. I'm interrupting. I'mgonna throw them off his game here?
What about zema though? Zema? What wasn't zeema nineteen ninety two, ninety
two ninety three, I graduated highschool? Yeah, but was that really

(16:12):
a seltzer or what did they Well, they call it a alternative beverage.
Yeah, but what did they callthose beverages? Like zeeman crap? Yeah?
They was probably yeah so like winecooler. Yeah. So anyway,
twenty thirteen was touted as the firstcommercially food seltzer. Well did a little

(16:37):
more digging. Wait a minute, you're telling me that there's there's an older
Seltzer than twenty thirteen. There mightbe, Okay, can I guess the
year go ahead, guess the year. I'm gonna say the year because Zeema.
We're not counting Zema nineteen ninety two, so I'm gonna go with I'm
gonna say two thousand and five. You are wrong, Okay, he's the

(16:59):
correct answer, going back to nineteenseventy eight. That's what I said.
What nineteen seventy eight was the firstseltzer nineteen seventy eight and heiser Busch,
if you can believe that, Yeah, oky, surprise, I was a
sophomore in high school. Now we'redating ourselves. But anyway, back in
nineteen seventy eight and heiser Busch cameup with a drink called Chelsea. It

(17:23):
was a fruit flavor and seltzer waterwas so they kind of advertised an adult
alternative beverage. Now did it havewait wait wait wait wait wait so okay,
so they made hard seltzers called Chelsea. So basically, if you didn't
want to get drunk on beer, you could get drunk on this seltzer.

(17:45):
Well, you couldn't really get drunkon it. One half one percent basically
an na seltzer. So they madeno wait a minute, so you're telling
me non alcoholic Seltzer, which they'reactually making now, and heiser Busch was
way ahead of the curve on this. Wow. What nineteen seventy eight Okay,
well I'm sure, okay, wellnon alcoholic okay, I don't know.
Really threw people in an uproar, though, a lot of people were

(18:10):
complaining because they were thought they wereadvertising it and they'd have children starting to
drink it because it was non alcoholicand it was just grooming them to be
future alcoholics. So home lasted ayear or two, pulled off the shelf.
Oh my god, so what's ontapurdos. Fun fact of the week
is the first selzer, created innineteen seventy eight by Anheuser Busch company,

(18:36):
was called shelse Chelsea, and peoplegot all pissed off and upset because it's
like children are gonna want to drinkthis and that's going to make them alcoholics
in the future. But it lookedlike a beer because when you poured it,
it also gave a nice frothy head. Oh my god. So they
were thinking that the adults would,oh my god, that's so drunk,

(18:59):
like they would They are touting Seltzer'sNow, that's that's pretty good. I
was unaware that I would have thoughtZeema would have been considered the first Seltzer.
No, and I'm like, wellthis is way before. Where are
you going with this? Like everybodyknows about zeema? All right, Well,
that's your official ones on tap Radiofun fact of the week, brought
to you by Harbor Light Bill.Good job Bill again. Yeah, I
mean we put you to work andyou stepped up. All right. Coming

(19:22):
up on this episode, we gotmore stuff to talk about, including uh
man, some pickleball and beer. We'll talk about that as well. This
is what's on tap Radio. Wewill be right back. Okay. We
will buy no more beer until wedrink all the beer we have at home,
we said, and then we laughand laughed and laughed. All right,

(19:45):
cut it out. This is what'son tap Radio. Back to James
and Chad. Well you really didit to yourself this time. B oh

(20:08):
yeah, last segment talking about Seltzer'salka Seltzer's not it Seltzer alka Seltzer.
Come on, man Hackey Radio.Okay, welcome back to What's on tab
Radio, where Bill I thought wasgonna enlighten us with this ancient history on

(20:32):
the history of Seltzer's and he's gonnatell me something like it was developed in
a Belgian abbey by Brussels monks, according to the monastery Seltzer Purity Law fourteen
twenty six or something like that.I was like, yeah, oh yeah.
And by the way, they hadthe law of the purity. The
Seltzer purity law fourteen twenty six wasif you made bad Seltzer you had to

(20:52):
add an extra day of a vowelsilence to your lifetime vowel silence. I
got to your lifetime vowus silence. If you make bad Seltzer ed one day,
that's a long time. It's time. So mentioned before, James is
recovering down there in the aftermath ofthe hurricane, and he said, guys,

(21:14):
the show must go on. Thelisteners demand that we continue to bring
you the finest on beer radio andthe award winning radio. No less.
I want to thank all of ourwonderful sponsors, of course, including Cast

(21:40):

It's free, we don't charge, there's no subscriptions. We're not you
know, the only the only timewe're going to be, you know,
asking for a handout maybe is ifyou want to sponsor this fine program,
in which case we will bring valueto your brand, or if you just
want to make a contribution to someof James equipment, because you know,

(22:00):
I don't know what kind of stuffhe's got going on down there. But
yeah, I've had a hard timestaying in touch with him, but he's
assured me he and his family aresafe, so that's good. But yeah,
we hanging out with Harbor Light Billand he's helping us keep the lights
on. And he was talking tome about he was listening to a podcast

(22:22):
about one of the fun facts Idid, and he did the great job,
great job Bill with a fun factthis segment. Yeah, thank you
very much. Yeah, And Iwas listening to some of the old ones
and one of the other fun facts, which was we were talking about banning
this Chelsea because it was going tocreate alcoholics from all of our children.
But that's not the first thing thatbeers that or celsias that were being banned.

(22:45):
Yeah, we're not talking about prohibitionhere. Yeah, I remember the
story we were talking about during break. Yeah, that was a out of
pup in Canada, they had abeer beer and I believe the Saskatchewan banned
it because it was too cheap. And hold on you I remember doing this
fun fact. This is good.So the Saskatchewan government said a beer called

(23:08):
beer beer beer beer. Yeah,it was too generic, it was too
cheap, and they said it's goingto entice too many people to buy it
and get drunk. Yeah, becausewhat was it. It was a twelve
pack was like ten dollars and eightycents or some something like that, and
that was two dollars less than Thisis the best part of the story though,
true story. They would put atwo dollars bill in a case of

(23:32):
beer when you bought it, soyou can get the two dollars back,
right, because they said, okay, well, if if our beer's too
cheap, will raise the price twodollars. You're happy, yes, And
then they put a two dollars billin the case. Six you bought it.
You got a case of beer intwo dollars. Oh that was so
fun. Oh that's good stuff.I forgot all about that. Yeah,

(23:52):
I'm glad you say. This iswhy you go back and you listen.
You can relive those moments. Allright, Thanks a lot, Bill for
doing that. We're still sipping onthese beers normally, Bill and I we've
gone through a couple of beers bynow, but technically we have because true,
there's two of us here, sothere's you know, it's not like
James is opening a beer because youknow, well very well maybe opening maybe

(24:17):
into it. Yeah, but uh, here we go. I'm gonna go
ahead, and I want to talkabout this, okay, speaking of banned
beers and non alcoholic seltzers, whatif we put a ban on non alcoholic
beer, can we save the children? Well, I'm not making this up,

(24:37):
but research at Stanford University, GoCardinal Stanford University, Ivy League institution
out there in California. They havedone some research and formed an opinion paper
to send a legislation for consideration.Because non alcoholic products right now can be

(25:00):
purchased in most states by anyone, doesn't matter how old you are. So
kind of sounds appropriate right right now. There are two and stuff. Yes,
there are two very conflicting arguments onthis, but there are some out
there that believe we need to dothis to save the children. And there

(25:21):
are other people like You're not gonnachange a thing. Okay. Kids are
still gonna find a way to drink, and eventually they're gonna try it when
they turn twenty one. So researchers, like I said at Stanford University,
they liken non alcoholic adult focused beveragesto candy cigarettes. Don't we still have
candy cigarettes around? I don't,I don't, I haven't. I haven't

(25:42):
seen him for a while. It'sbeen a while since I've gone shopping for
candy cigarettes. But now you've givenme a job. Okay, I like
this. Bill, We're gonna gono R and D for Yeah. Yeah,
there's a candy store in downtown Holland. Bill and I will go hit
up a couple of breweras and goto the candy store. We'll let you
know and report next week. Butthey're suggesting that age limits be put on
non alcoholic beverages because while promoting ahealthier lifestyle, no hangovers and no buzz,

(26:07):
those are not enough of a deterrentfor children to want to buy these
beers. And they believe it isa gateway beverage to encouraging them to try
out the lifestyle. Hey, it'scool to drink, man, it's all
right, And eventually they will bepersuaded as adults to adopt this drinking lifestyle

(26:29):
and probably over indulge because they drankso much of the non alcoholics stuff.
Hey, what's the problem. Ihad seven of these and I'm fine,
And now you have seven as anadult and you're like, hey, I
can't go to work. But worse, they're saying it's going to encourage them
to say, all right, I'vehad enough of the fake stuff, Let's
try the real thing. And theybelieve that people are going to try it

(26:49):
before turning twenty one. Now,the study from Stanford University does state that
they have no data suggesting this hashappened yet, but their fear is is
that it could happen, and theybelieve they see all of the warning signs
and want to get out in frontof it. So if they can get
out in front of it, shutit down, stop it before it happens,

(27:14):
that's what they want to do.Now. Even though good was that
was that a thing with the candycigarettes, They actually do like research and
say how many of you smokers outthere actually started with candy cigarette on my
gateway. I'd like to see theresults of That's so, that's good.

(27:36):
That's a great question. Like, yeah, I'll tell you my Marlboro Reds
were never in my future, butdamn that candy store. Yeah, Donald
got it? Or how many ofyou pipe smokers you know actually saw Frosty
the Snowman and said, why whichI wanted to be like Frosty in the
smoke Up Fight. That's it.I want to do that. Whoa,

(27:57):
that's pretty funny. Well, someeven though it's allowed in most states,
there are some retail establishments that donot allow the sale of non alcoholic beverages
that are focused on the alt alcoholindustry. They don't let anyone under eighteen
purchase those things. And using therationale, can you imagine can you imagine

(28:19):
a nine year old walking in walkingout with a six pack of non alcoholic
Corus Banquet beer. And I waslike, that's an image right there.
Changing times because my dad, youknow a funny story though my dad blessed
his sould died. He was bornin nineteen twenty six and his dad,
my grandfather, would send him tothe bar with a bucket and a quarter.

(28:42):
Yeah, and that's where a bucketof beer came from. And he
was nine ten years old. Thebartender would fill it up for twenty cents,
and my grandfather would say, keepthe nickel from breaking a bucket of
beer back home. And people thoughtnothing of that right way back then.
Yeah, yeah, right now.Well beer was a little bit. It

(29:03):
wasn't quite as strong than in thein that that era. But true,
you know, it's not like theycould go get a you know, bucket
of barley wine. That would bethat would be a little much. So,
oh my goodness. Okay, soall right, banning the sale of

(29:26):
non alcoholic drinks, yes, allright, So where do we stop that?
I don't know. I don't know. Marco Marco Salas are, the
head of the Non Alcoholic Beverage Association, agrees with the opinion that we need
that restriction. Opposition to this suggeststhat moderate alcohol consumption will help create healthier

(29:48):
lifestyles because people who drink alcohol andmoderation and learn to do that from a
young age will adopt those practices kindof like exercise. I think that's a
stretch, but that is kind ofa standard in Germany and other European countries
where if you're with your parents ata bar, you can get a beer
or a small glass of wine, and they also have alcoholic beverages at at

(30:12):
dinner even though you're very young. It is true. It is true.
In fact, some of the opponentsto this position wanting to put restrictions on
age are even saying that not onlyare you not going to change the beer
culture, but you may create aculture where kids want to go and start
drinking more alcohol, whereas with accessto non alcoholic products, they may never

(30:36):
in their lifetime pick up an alcoholicbeverage. Let us know what you think.
I don't know. It's a fundebate, all right. We got
to take a break here. WhenBill and I come back, we'll talk
about more stuff, including whether ornot it's a good idea to put your
wiener in beer. We'll be rightback. We like to have at least
five practice beers before we have ouractual beer. Well you need now,

(30:56):
there's lots of practice. What's ontap radio continues, all right, Here

(31:19):
we go, learn how to workthe board, pillbeam. Here we go.
I wasn't gonna say anything. Hey, listen, least my equipment still
up and running. Hey, hey, hey, it's a family show.
Oh yeah, whoa all right, okay, different different subject, but yeah,

(31:41):
welcome back once on Tap Radio. We just got off track there,
but I want to thank you guysfor tuning in, and uh we miss
our buddy James on Mike number one, the beer Guru himself dealing with some
technical difficulties after Hurricane Berrel came through. By the way, I think,
not only are people in Houston reallyupset with the damage and the shutdowns and

(32:07):
the flooding and all that, butfrom what I've read or like worst named
storm ever, who names it Beryl? Yeah? I thought they were,
like, actually come up with realpersons of people's names, not to say
there's nobody named that. But Iwas always under the impression it would be

(32:28):
like Barry or Bob or Chad orsomething like that. Yeah, but I
yeah, I don't know. Butapparently the the name I saw somebody post
on it. I was like,no, it's a real name. It's
named after a French goddess or something. I'm like, whatever, I don't
care. Anyway, when I hearBeryl, I think barrel aged beers.
I think big beers. And that'sthe first thing I think. I don't

(32:50):
want to be thinking next time somebodysays I've got a barrel age styles like
that stupid storm, and I'm like, oh great, now we gotta We're
gonna ruin an entire category. Speakingof ruining a category, coming up on
the show, we're going to talkabout a new beer category. But before
we do, and speaking of bigbeers, yeah, I'm gonna sign for
us to open another one. Iwas just gonna say, we're that's called
a toss bill and then you caughtthat pass nice, Thank you very much.

(33:15):
Our next beer here is called thatSignificant. That's yeah, that's significant
from Turning Point Beer Company. It'san English barley wine coming in about twelve
point. That's a good idea. All right, we're gonna end the show
on. We haven't even got thehour two. I mean, we're into
the twelve percent barley wine. Iwant to thank Sam and Joline. There's

(33:36):
our first name drop of the showbill. All right, all right,
from the backyard grill. There arepatrons out there, regulars, and Sam
and Joeline made sure they know howmuch I love barley wine. They hooked
me up with this that's significant Englishstyle of barley wine. Bill's that just
that smells like heaven and a glass. Wow, I'm gonna say that right

(34:00):
now. I could be wrong, but they say it's an English style barley
wine. It is one American hoppedI mean that is hoppy that has got
a dry that's a that's a verysurprisingly dry beer. It starts rich and
and am I am I wrong?I get some sweetness on it, yeah,
and then it dries out right thereat the end, just gone.

(34:22):
Man, it dries out and it'slike no one in their sip here.
So the not a big mouthfeel becauseit washes off quickly, but that initial
taste when it's sitting on your tongue, Holy coah. That good. That's
a big flavor and a big contrasttoo. I'm not used. I mean
a lot of people suggest that Bigfootstyle barley wine from Sierra Nevada is an

(34:46):
over hopped American version, you know, American barley wine. Which that is
the significant difference between an English stylebarley wine and an American barley wine.
Is that English style going to bemuch more rich and multi with very low,
very very low notes of hops. But this one here It's a pretty

(35:06):
simple can too, so there's nota lot of backup information fon it.
Uh, just tells you with thei'll call percentage and what brewery it's from,
all right, turning Point located inTexas. I don't that's one brewery
I haven't been to. But Iwanted to thank again Sam and Joellean for
hooking us up. All right,So to round out the hour here,

(35:28):
I thought we would do something alittle different. You know, we we
don't have our fearless leader James withus, and I'm gonna I'm gonna toss
this over here. I gave theone sheet to Harbor Light Bill, who's
filling in on second Mike, doinga great job. Thank you. That's
right, pulling your weight. Allright. It's weird we're not paying him
to do this job either. Heactually pays us to be here. He's

(35:49):
a sponsor. So all right,So what I want to do. We're
gonna we're gonna cover some of theheadlines that got our attention this week.
Bill hit us with some of theheadlines. Yeah, so going over the
headlines, I read over two hundredpeople lose their job because you like canned
beer. Yeah, people switching tocan beer. There is a beer bottle

(36:09):
plant in Houston which is just laidoff two hundred and twenty workers because the
demand for beer bottles has dropped somuch and the demand for can beer has
gone up. People in the beerplant in Houston laying off two hundred and
twenty workers. Of course, Ihave heard that beer is supposedly better out
of a can because it doesn't letany light in as supposed to so many

(36:32):
reasons. So feel sorry for thosepeople, But hey, the market shifts
nobody. Hey, one percent ofthe people at the Buggy Whip Company got
laid off whenever the model T cameout. Yeah, that's right, all
right, So I got another headlineanother me too. Brewery promotes patriotism.
Yeah, we've been talking about thesebreweries that, you know, all American

(36:55):
ingredients taste like freedom. Oh Iwish that's when James, Yeah, that's
more like a crow than a baldeagle. Never heard of bald eagles.
Like a sickly ball as a baldeagle that drank too much barley wine.
All right, anyway, But I'mnot even gonna mention the name of the
company, not even gonna do it. You know why, because it's another

(37:16):
company that just just tastes like freedom. It's All America, and they're capitalizing
on the Dylan mulvaney fiasco with budLight, and like if bud Light disappears,
and they're all saying, if weget one percent of that business,
we'll be millionaires. So everybody's makingyou know, contract brewed cheap stuff.
And we're gonna be talking about that. We I asked, you know,

(37:37):
little tease here is is Hulk Hogana racist? Well, Hulk Hogan promoting
his new All American beer. We'lltalk about that later on in the show.
What of our headlines you got?Uh, looks like we have pickle
ball in the Beer City. Yeah, Grand Rapids, Michigan Beer City,
USA. For those of you wantto argue, come visit. Uh.

(37:58):
Now, it's a it's a annualcompetition where people vote on what the best
beer city is. Grand Rapids isa They went like three four times in
a row, and so it's it'sbeen it's been good. But there is
a major pickleball tournament. I juststarted playing pickleball and it never plays.
It is so much fun. Butyou cannot drink beer while you're playing pickleball,

(38:19):
you will spill all over the court. But uh, like golf might.
Well, yeah, you set yourbeer down, take a swing,
and you can drink. That's prettygood. Uh. But they have titled
this major pickleball tournament the Beer CityOpen. It's a great name for it
is a great name. All right, Okay, I have another organic beer
category, Chad, what's that about? Finally? Because that's what we needed.

(38:43):
It's like, okay, I thoughtwe had an organic beer covered.
Didn't we have this covered before wetalked about it. Yeah, there's organic
certified beer out there. Yeah, well, the world's first us DA certified
organic non alcoholic beers now finally beenmade. And I'm like, I don't
know. I mean, I'm proud. I'm not again, I'm not even

(39:06):
gonna mention the name of the brewery. But because nobody is going to go
out and say, wait a minute, we have non alcoholic beer that's finally
organic from the USD eight. Andof course now there's an organic beer listener
who's really upset with me, AndI know, I'm sorry, I presumed,
but my position is why, Ijust it's a lot of money to

(39:27):
spend on getting something certified. Butnow we finally have a USDA certified organic
non alcoholic beer for those of youwho believe in organic products and no alcohol.
Wow. Okay, hey, docigarettes or alcohol do more damage?
I can't remember. Well, that'skind of what the story was about,
because a study suggests, and afterdoing multiple research case studies, that cigarettes

(39:54):
actually do more to impair our cognitiveskills and our ability to remember things than
drinking excessive alcohols. So that's whyI don't drink all That's why I don't
smoke. All right, we gottime for one more real quick on more
once again. Florida man is atit again. You forgot how to open
a beer? Yeah? Can thathappen? Yes? A bunch of kids,

(40:14):
Well, I say kids, they'reyoung. They were twenty one years
old. They were out fishing ona boat and the alligator came up to
their boat and he had a beercan, and well, he reached down
on the water, called the alligatorover, swam up to the boat,
padded him underneath the chin. Thealligator took a chomp at him, and
he stuck the beer can right inthere and pow popped it open. I'm
like, dang, you almost losta finger peal, but he got the

(40:36):
beer on, he got the beeropen, and then he promptly chugged the
beer and threw it in. Soyeah, I would have lost his finger.
You could opened only nine more beers. That's he didn't get more alligators?
All right, that's our number one. And what's on tap radio?
Coming up? So much more, including a hold my beer and watched this
and newly weeds. Yeah, ohyeah, beer can put a strain on

(40:59):
your marriage. We'll tell you whenwe come back. All right, this
what's on tap radio. Believe insomething they say, we believe. We'll
have another beer. This is what'son tap radio. Back to James and
Chad, pull my beer and watchthis brought to you by your friends at

(41:22):
we'ringing all the ten Tacking Insurance Group, ARTI, Grand Rapids dot Com.
Hour number two, what's on tapRadio starts right now. Yeah, one

(41:44):
hour was not enough and Bill andI didn't get kicked off the air yet.
One hour is never enough for beer, No, but we we made
to pull through. If you're justtuning in, thanks for hanging out.
And our fearless leader James Simpson,he he had to deal with the after

(42:05):
effects of Hurricane Beryl, and sowe will be taking a collection. We'll
be passing the can around and justleave whatever spare change you have in there.
He's safe, everything's good. ButI want to just thank him for
all the hard work he does.Man, I got to run the board.
Now, you know, this isMike. One's tough. That's why

(42:25):
he gets a big bucks. That'sexactly why he gets a big bucks.
Yeah. You know the guy workedin radio for twenty years. I did
not know. Yeah, he's beenin radio for over actually over twenty years
now, so I mean, youknow he's a pro. So so if
the show is less than spectacular, that's because Bill's on second mic. Whoa
whoa harbor light Bill over there onsecond Mike. I've just thrown him under

(42:46):
the bus. And you've been atit for ten Well, I wasn't here
for the first two and a halfyears. I jumped in. There was
another guy, Chris Bradley. Ohthat's a name drop. Let's give hi
an drop. Yeah, yeah,I gotta give gotta throw a little love
for Spradley. He he jumped intouh, he jumped into the second chair

(43:08):
with James helped kick this thing off. But here, and I've got just
under a yearn of my belt.Maybe. Yeah, you've been hanging out
for us, for with us fora while, and occasionally, you know,
we give you a little more responsibility. But you've done all right here,
including opening up this beer that we'reenjoying right now. Wonderful beer.
Yeah, this that one. Thankour friends at the Backyard Grill, Sam

(43:30):
and Jolene who hooked us up.That's significant in English style barley wine,
which Bill and I are loving, but we I think we agree it is
more hopped than what I would expectof an English style barley wine. Yeah.
Turning Point Beer Company out of Texas, Texas. Yeah yeah, but
what city? Oh Bedford text thereit is all right there, It is

(43:52):
okay, doing good things down inTexas. Yep, all right, Well,
so we talked a little bit aboutthat. I want to thank also
for all those headlines that we justpeppered in there the last segment. I
want to thank Superior Pest Control ofWest Michigan. Superior Pest Control. But
they've been in business over thirty yearsand yeah and they send us It just

(44:15):
flooded our mailbox. So I wantto thank them for hooking us up with
all the stories. Also got amessage on our social that's you can hit
us up on our social, onour dms. You can find us on
Facebook, on the X, onTikTok, and on I Think It's Friends
to No, Princer doesn't exist anymoreLinkedIn. No, we're not on there

(44:37):
all right. Instagram that's the otherone. Yeah, And that's at What's
on tap Radio? And we gota message here. It's like, you
did a headline about an organic nonalcoholic beer and you said you wouldn't give
the name of the brewery. Thatsucks. I'm like, well, that's
feedback, and I'm like, well, this one goes Dana. This is

(44:59):
for you is the Rancho West Breweryin southern California. They are the first
USDA certified organic non alcoholic beer.So if you want that beer, go
get it. I'm sorry, Ipresume remember I said I was gonna take
a beating. Yeah, Malibu, isn't it? Yeah it is? But

(45:22):
let's face it's Malibu, California.Yeah, but whoa, we have listeners
there, Bill. We love Malibu. Here you go, that's a lot
better. That's a whole lot better. Uh. And you know, what
other place we really like a lot? Uh, I'm gonna go ahead and
tell you right now. I don'teven I don't even have the sounder for

(45:45):
it. So I'm gonna tell youthis right now. Our number two.
We're gonna kick figs off with Holdmy beer and Watch this, brought to
you by our friends at Ringnalda tenHacen Insurance Group here in West Michigan rt
I Ringnold ten Hacen Insurance Commercial Residential. They are an institution here in West
Michigan and proud sponsors of this programbringing you right now, Hold my beer

(46:07):
and watch this. And yeah,we're we love RTI, but there's another
place we like. Yeah, Yeah, it's down south. Yeah. Hey,
Bill, you want to take aguess to where this week's story comes
from? Woo Man, If Igotta go down a limb, I'd have
to say Florida. Your hold mybeer and watch this comes from Wildwood,
Florida, where twan Thon Fom,a sixty eight year old man, was

(46:34):
observed driving a red Toyota camery earlyin the morning. The observing officer noticed
that the vehicle was swerving on theroad, so we pulled Fom over and
he claimed to be tired, whichmakes I'm sure that's early in the morning.
Yeah, yeah, that's believable.Well, his wife was sitting next
to him, and she says hehas he's really tired. I'll drive him

(46:57):
the rest of the way home. Now, highly unlikely that that would have
worked, but we will never know. And here's why we will never know
if that excuse would have worked. It's because Fom, who is fluent in
Vietnamese and only speaks broken English, managed to master one particular sentence in perfect

(47:17):
English and he blurted it out rightin front of the cop. I'm drunk,
like well, honey, it's alittle late to switch seats now.
The officer followed protocol for Dui stop, and this protocol included a new measure

(47:42):
that is a shock in surprise tome and was probably a shock to Fomb
as well. Because his primary languageis Vietnamese, he needs to be issued
his miranda rights in Vietnamese. Thecop had a translator on an electronic trans
later and translated his miranda rights intoperfect Vietnamese, so he couldn't have the

(48:07):
delay in being arrested. During thearrest, he admitted to drinking only one
Heineken, but he had a receiptin his possession from publics in Kenny he
bought an eighteen pack. He alsomanaged to articulate another imperfect English sentence,
Yeah, I like to party fombblue point nine to three, which is

(48:30):
over the legal limit, and wasarrested on DUI. So you're hold by
beer. One heine kin. Iget you up there, lorded. I
probably didn't drink all eighteen of them, but he probably had more than one.
So you're hold by beer. Andwatch this is a Vietnamese speaking man
gets pulled over for suspected drunk drivingand yells I'm drunk in perfect English and

(48:52):
then gets read as Miranda rights inperfect Vietnamese, and that oh my beer.
Watched This brought to you by ourfriends at the Ring Haul, the
ten Hacen, the insurance group wherethey'll cover you for just about everything except
this. All right. That's that'sa good one right there. That one

(49:13):
may go into the hall of famefor me. All right, coming up,
we're gonna find out what it means, uh if you put your wiener
in beer and much more coming upon What's on tap Radio. We'll be
right back the only thing we throwback on Thursday. He's a pint of
beer or two or three. Thisis what's on Tap Radio. To get

(49:35):
back to James and Chad. Wewant to thank Superior Past Control, West
Michigan for flooding our inbox with storieseach and every week. Proud sponsors of
our research department, Superior Pest Control. You can find them here in West
Michigan at Superior Pest dot Biz.That's Superior Pest dot Biz. All right,

(50:00):
welcome back to What's on Tap Radio. We're still laughing about that.
Hold my beer and watch this.Oh that's good stuff. That's quick thinking
from the cop though, to getthe translator out rather than having to send
for someone from like career or something. I don't know what he had to
do. We gotta call somebody in. But I don't know, man,

(50:22):
I don't I don't know how thatall works. I don't want to pretend
to know. But you know, yeah, we we he was he was
over a limit. This is oneI'm I'm not promoting drunk driving. I'm
not or even buzz driving. Buta lot of people say, you know,

(50:45):
it's like point ninety two or pointninety three, that's way over is
it point? I don't know.I don't walk around with the breathalyzer and
check math you know how MUCHY.I just know whenever I get in the
car, I'm under point eight. That I know because I know, you
know, I do the math. You know, just simple It's like,
okay, you know, I gottasit here a little while, I gotta
you know, drink some water, hang out and you know, watch some

(51:07):
more sports or whatever before I getin the car. If if I've had
too many or if I'm close,I don't want to take that chance.
But some people will say point eightpoint on nine, you know he's under,
And I'm like, I don't know. It's not like Wade box Kid
who blew his dad's batting average.Again, that was a fun fact.

(51:29):
Go back and listen to our podcast, brought to you by Cast Branding.
Yeah that was uh man, thatwas something else. But uh again.
I'm not suggesting that you push thelimits or say, well, you know,
let's just round down. No,we're not doing that. I just
believe me. The police won't rounddown for you. No, they won't.
How many stories, though, havewe done with a hold my beer

(51:51):
and watch this? I want tothink ringing all the ten Hachen insurance again
for sponsoring that segment. Many havewe done with like the blood alcohol levels
like one point nine, just likeso far over the limit or point one
sorry point one nine? H pointone point nine you'd be dead? Oh

(52:12):
my gosh. The underlying theme tothat whole all of those so is the
guy always says, I've had one, maybe two. It's it. That's
it. Yep. If you wantto know, if you like, there
is no correct answer, because thinkabout this. We're not telling you how
to get out of a drunk drivingticket, by the way, we are
not, but because there is noway of getting out of if it,
just don't do it. But ifyou really had one or two and you

(52:36):
say one or two, they don'tbelieve you. And if you say none,
you're lying. And if you ifyou had more than two and you
admit to it, you're getting outof the car anyway. So there's no
it doesn't matter what answer you give, you're getting out of the car.
And so this is just gonna happen. That's why you don't do it.
So remember to drink responsibly. Please. Speaking of drinking responsibility responsibly and blood

(53:00):
alcohol levels. What do you think, Donald Trump, what do you think
his blood alcohol level was or willbe at the upcoming Republican National Convention in
a not so terrible city of Milwaukee. I don't know, but I hope

(53:22):
you could take bets on it inVegas. Well I bet you can't because
it's a sure thing because Donald Trumpdoesn't drink alcohol at all. It would
be zero point zero. And yetthe Republican National Convention is being themed in
beer themed red white and brew.Oh yeah, I know, for the

(53:45):
not so terrible city of you.If you missed that story, Donald Trump
made a statement that was taken outof context and blew up. By the
way, you notice you don't hearanything about that anymore because somebody took it
out of context to make him lookbad. And I'm not defending Trump.
I'm just making a comment that DonaldTrump said that Milwaukee was a terrible city.

(54:08):
But it was in reference to howthey ran their elections and there were
some fraudulent elections and some bad thingsthat happened and they had to remove people.
But somebody took it out of contextand to say, yeah, he
doesn't like to see he called ita terrible City and like, well,
not exactly, but I find itinteresting that the Republican National Convention for a
guy who doesn't drink is red, white and brew. But all right,

(54:30):
anyway, speaking of guys who donot drink, Hulk Hogan does not drink
alcohol. And and and we talkedabout this because he doesn't drink alcohol,
and he's another celebrity who doesn't drink. He's throwing his name on a beer
can and of course, what's thename of the beer again, real American?

(54:52):
Yeah, because yeah, that washis slogan. He's like, Hulk
Hogan was a real American and thatwas his thing. But the question is
is is Hulk Hogan a racist? Now we're not saying he is, but
there is a report out there andhe's being accused of being racist. Bill's

(55:13):
got the story. Yeah, justrecently, he's promoting his new beer and
they hired a third party marketing groupto do some taste testings. Well,
he visited and one of the galsthat was pouring the beers for him happened
to be African American gal, andthey had some issues with the third party

(55:36):
marketing group, so they let himgo. All right, So pause,
So beer company and distributor. Theyhire third party marketing companies all the time
to go and do demos what theycall them demos or tastings in grocery stores
or alcohol stores and let people samplethe product before they buy it. So
he launches the beer and they're pouringit, and it just so happens to
be a black woman who's also asocial media influencer. Yeah, this galla

(56:00):
essence, Jenni, I've ever heardof her. I'm not a big social
media person, right, and shethe way I understand. Okay, So
they did one event and Hulk Hoganwas there. Yes, so he's there,
she's there pouring, He's there, and then the next day they canceled
all the events with the third partyparty group. Yes, but because it

(56:22):
was such a short lease, Imean a short contract. It was only
a one week contract to begin with. It ended after one day, so
it's not like a five year dealor anything. Right, Well, this
essence, jenn I did a littlebit of research and found out that long
time ago, back in twenty fifteen, Hulk Hogan was let go from the
WWE for racial slurs in a tapewhere he was recorded. So I believe

(56:49):
I believe the correct term is anunauthorized release of a sexual video sex tape
as opposed to the authorized release ofa sex tape that you did not want
film. But he made some racialslurs there, yep. So I have
no idea. I'm not guessing, but I she heard this and now is
was accusing him of being a racist. Yeah, but the beer brand came

(57:15):
out and said it was misunderstood. The issue was with the third party agency,
it wasn't with her. So butyou know, the way things go
in social media, all starts rolling, yep. So now and so the
the breweries issued a statement in responseto that, saying that they've reached out

(57:36):
to the marketing company, the thirdparty marketing company that does the tastings,
and they've asked for clarification on thisto come from them because they believe that
the whole thing will go away, because once the people look into it,
they're going to say, yeah, there's there's there's nothing to this, right,
there's really nothing to this. Imean, we're not going to we're

(57:57):
not going to pursue this. Weknow and the Hull wasn't involved in the
decision making of the hiring the thirdparty group. Of the taste testing of
any of this kind of stuff. He just showed up to promote it.
But look at the optics of this. Now, let's let's flip the coin
here, all right. You don'tI don't care. You could. You
could have seven non alcoholic beers inyour system right now, and you're like,

(58:19):
I can still see the opt Okay, I played that, but you
could in all seriousness, though, you you can look at it and you
say, Okay, this is aguy that was released from the WWE because
of a racist slur he made ina tape and it got released, and
so he, you know, hekind of hurt himself on that kind of
he completely did. But then somebodynow he's gonna release his own beer.

(58:43):
And the guy doesn't even drink beer, yea. He shows up for a
demo on day one and stands nextto this woman who just happens to be
black, and then the very nextday they canceled all the demos and there
was a she even posted I thinksome of the text messages with the third
party marketing company, and it wasin the marketing company even said you didn't
do anything wrong. They canceled allof the demos. And she wants to

(59:06):
know why they did and it justit looks really bad. But is it
as bad? This is gonna bea developing story that we watch. I
mean, I don't think we're gonnahave as many updates on this as we
did on the Dylan multi story lastyear. Probably that was a very that
was a very updated story. Ohwe got new development in a new development

(59:29):
in and so I don't know. But if if you got thoughts on this,
reach out to us. You cansend us an email What's on Tap
Radio gmail dot com and you canalso send us on the DMS. As
we said at What's on Tap Radioon social media. All right, coming
up, let's talk about wieners andbeer. We'll be right back. After

(59:51):
reading about the evils of drinking,we made up our mind we're gonna stop
reading. What's on Tap Radio continueswith Games Simpson and Chad Pilbeam. I
am a real American's right, Ohyeah, America. It tastes like freedom

(01:00:21):
America's beer. Welcome back to What'son Tap Radio. Over Light Bill on
second mic over there giving us anupdate on real American beer. We've been
updating this ultra right beer. We'vebeen talking about all these me too's making
patriotic beers and you know, andthen including this one from Hulk Hogan.

(01:00:46):
Okay, oh there it is allright, all right, real American beer
Hulk Hogan. Uh, I guessI didn't the history there. In twenty
fifteen, he lost his gig withWWE because of a racial slurry made and

(01:01:07):
rightfully slow, rightfully so. ButI hope, I'm really hoping that this
last incident where he was accused ofracism for firing the marketing company, well
he didn't fire them, no,but the marketing company got fired from the
beer company. And I hope itsounds like it's gonna blow over. I
think it is. It's kind oflike there's just no substance to it,

(01:01:27):
right, kind of like Donald Trumpsaying this is a terrible city. But
he didn't. It was taken outof context, right. I'm hoping that's
the case. But if it's not, you know, and I'm not defending
this beer because I really want tosee this beer. There's I want to
see this beer on my shelf justso I can try it once and then
I can put it on my shelfof you know, fad beers in fact,

(01:01:49):
I'm gonna throw this out. Therewas a fad beer that came out
when I first started into the wholecraft beer thing in the early two thousands,
and there was a beer called threeStooges beer. Remember that, Yeah,
yeah, yeah, And it wasbrewed using the slowly wee urn process.
I'm like, come on, man, that is so gimmicky and hacky.

(01:02:12):
And if you know familiar with thethree Stooges you know that reference.
But anyway, there's a chance itmight be a good beer though there's a
chance it says it uses premium ingredients. All right, so real quick,
I want to go ahead and talkabout this. I've teased it enough.

(01:02:34):
I feel bad even using the wordtease, and then the next word I'm
gonna use here, But okay, all right, So what if you got
a bunch of Wieners running around yourbrewery, Well you may be the host
of a Wiener dog race. Now, breweries are doing all kinds of crazy
things. I thought the idea ofhaving a Wiener dog race at a brewery

(01:02:59):
original, but is it really drawingpeople in? Well? What if you
tie it into the release of yournew Badger Hound beer and you do it
at the Alamo Beer Company in SanAntonio, Texas, and they brought in
eleven dogs to compete in three separateheats. Once you qualify, you move
on to the final and you competefor the top wiener title. The outcome

(01:03:23):
of this event pretty well determined beforeit started because Forest, the Wiener dog
Forest is an eleven time Wiener Dogchamp wow in racing at the Texas bar
franchise Little Wood Rows that's establishment aroundTexas, and they had Wiener dog races

(01:03:43):
and they're like, hey, wecould do that. My son and daughter
a little wiener dog. Put himin the right, you know what,
there's an idea. Oh wait, but don't be a me too, all
right, no, no, nono. But the event took place in
preparation for the Wiener Dog Nationals, which was gonna take that. Actually,
I have a Wiener Dog National racingcompetition and the championship's gonna be held in
California on the following week. Andso Forrest was the eleven time champ and

(01:04:09):
won easily. The owner of Forrestwon a case of the Badgerhound beer,
and the wiener himself, who wasthe winning Wiener, got bragging him barking
rights. I love it. That'sa fun story, all right. So
before we go too much further, and yes there, believe it or not,
we got another wiener story. Sohere it comes. But before we

(01:04:31):
do, I want to mention Bill. He drinks responsibly, just like I
do. But he had to drivehere, so he took a splash of
the barley wine. His beer's gone, so he is going to crack open
another beer and just nice, easydrinking light beer. And what I find
interesting about this is he went andgrabbed it out of my beer fridge.

(01:04:53):
I'm like, this is gonna tiehim perfect with our story. Tell everybody
what you're drinking. So I justcracked open a nice cold ams beer from
the land Land of sky Blue Water. It is you bet you okay,
so tell you It's from the HamsBrewing Company in the not so good city
of wisc Arable City. Yeah, yes, all right, here we go,

(01:05:17):
so Hams and I bring this upbecause I gotta I gotta ask you,
now, all right, it wasit tastes like beer. It tastes
like beer. There it is.Okay, there's there's a tasting notes.
So Bill's having a beer and I'mstill enjoying this barley wine from Turning Point
Brewery. All right, so here'sthe question. Is a good idea to

(01:05:38):
put your wiener in beer? Well, that is a question that many people
have asked. And I'm gonna startoff by saying this, Bill. I
don't know about you, but fourthof July was just upon us. And
I love a cold beer, andI love grilling up. Oh yeah,
yeap green oiling up the waiters.Man, give me an all beef hot

(01:06:00):
dog right there. Absolutely pud on. But some people say that it's better
because a lot of people boil theirhot dogs. They boil them in water,
and then they're like, yeah, what's better, boil hot dogs or
grilled? Everybody's like grill hot dogs. They're like, have you ever taken
your wieners and boiled them in beer? And I'm like, yeah, well,
like a Ham's beer would be perfectfor brewing that, I mean,

(01:06:23):
because most hot dogs are made withpork, and well you're drinking the Hams
and yeah, yeah, it's poetic. You see what I did there?
I saw all right, all right, I did see. I let it
pass by. Oh thanks. Youcan tell he's getting comfortable on the show.
Folks, he's taking shots at thehost, all right, But simply
boiling your hot dogs and water doesn'tdo anything other than cook them, get

(01:06:45):
them up to a temperature, andmost hot dogs are already cooked anyway.
But beer tends to give a moresubtle and distinct flavor and also makes them
more tender. So I don't knowif that's been a problem, but people
say boiling and beer is a betterway to Now has there been any research

(01:07:05):
on what kind of beer? BecauseI can see a nice stout or a
brown ale or I wouldn't want toruin a perfectly good barley wine by boiling
a hot dog in it. ButI can see a darker, heavier beer
with more flavors. We'll give yourhot dog a better flavor. I think
Bill and I have some research todo because somebody else hasn't done it.
But in case you're wondering, yeah, this is pretty awesome. So that

(01:07:27):
not only are they saying, don'tgrill your hot dogs, but put your
hot dogs in beer and boil themin beer. It's actually a better product.
But we'll get a nice light ale, double IPA and a stout,
three hot dogs. I got something. I got something that Bill and I
are going to work on all right. Yeah, well we'll have to post
that on our social media and we'llget to work on that. But in
case you're wondering, though, whohas the best tasting hot dog? The

(01:07:54):
Washington Post Doug deeate man, theywent and did some research on the subject
and published a troversial but substantiated results. Oh yeah, yeah, now I
know what you're thinking. All right, So all right, First of all,
I don't know about you, butall beef hot dogs way better than
anything else in my opinion. Wellyeah, unlet's just start and getting into

(01:08:15):
bronx or something like that. Butthat's a different category. Yeah, yeah,
right, right, we're just talkinghot dogs. Yes, okay,
right, okay, so I'm gonnago ahead and say all beef hot dogs
all right, but what brand Now, fourth of July, like I said,
was just upon us. They hada big hot dog eating competition is
put on by Nathan's. Yeah.Do you ever have Nathan's all beef hot

(01:08:36):
Dog? Yes? I have. It's prett dang tasty. Yeah, But
according to the Washington Post, Nathan'sis only the second best tasting beef hot
dog out there. Yeah, Iknow. Also in the top five,
and I'm a little surprised by thisone. But Oscar Meyer a little surprised

(01:08:56):
by that one. Trader Joe's WelshEr Farms. They all had they were
in the top five. But thenumber one, undisputed winner of the best
tasting wiener in the hot dog worldis the Kirkland all Beef hot dog from
Costco, which is sold at theirbig box stores for a dollar fifty.

(01:09:20):
Who take you want to take awild guess of what hot dogs? I
bought from their shelf from the shelfand grilled on fourth of July kl Kirkland
hell Beef hot dogs from Costco. So I got lucky. I didn't know
that. But so if you're wonderingwhat the best hot dog to go with
your beer is, that's crazy. That's an undisputed champ. And you said

(01:09:43):
it was a controversial, Well,because everybody's like, it's Kirkland. It's
an off brin. It comes froma big box store and they sell it
for a buck fifty. But Iwonder who makes Kirkland hot dog because Kirkland
just gets other stuff. I'm surethey do. They have nice have decent
scotch. But everybody knows that it'ssomebody else curkling golf balls. Everybody knows
that it's somebody else's. I didnot know that, all right, See

(01:10:05):
things I did not know you seeyou add value? All right? Way
to go, Bill. All right. Some other interesting things that may help
you decide what beer to drink withyour hot dog are the popular hot dogs
or most soft after hot dogs aroundthe world. For example, Alaska they
search out reindeer hot dogs. InOklahoma they disproportionately look up meatless hot dogs.

(01:10:29):
And in Maine, oh yeah, name drop for fire Marshall Matt because
he's from there. Main red snapperfish hot dogs. And in why known
for their beautiful Pacific waters, theyare known for their dirty water hot dogs,
which are boiled in spices. Soso Main I thought it would be
like a moose hot dog. Yeah, there you go, something like that.

(01:10:51):
All right. All right, Sothere's your hot dog and beer report.
All right, we got one moresegment of once on Tap Radio coming
up and feel good stories to bringit all home. This is what's on
tap radio. We'll be right back. And the teacher said, no,
Bobby, there's no such time asbureau clock fire. That teacher. This

(01:11:12):
is What's on Tap Radio. TedrickBurn Company proud sponsors What's on Tap Radio.

(01:11:50):
It's too much for What's on TapRadio, even for me. All right,
let's all right, last segment onceon Tap Radio. Well, we've
been sitting here talking about hot dogsand we wanna we wanna boil him in
some different beer and see what wecan come up with for flavors. And

(01:12:12):
Bill and I we've we've taken onthe challenge. We're gonna do that.
I want to thank Harvelight Bill forfilling on Mike number two. As I
said, this last segment for theweek, beer grewer James Simpson dealing with
the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. SomeSo if you want to make a donation,
you know, small change and wecan go and uh we'll collect that

(01:12:34):
and buy him some new equipment. But uh, I'm glad he's safe and
for everybody who wrote out the hurricanedown there in Houston didn't have a choice.
You guys just hunkered down. Ihope you stayed safe and uh,
yeah, we were thinking about you. All right. Last segment for the
week for What's on Tap Radio, brought to you by our friends at Tantrick
Brewing Company, who have their sixthanniversary coming up. Yeah, Gerald's birthday

(01:12:59):
Cake. Looking forward to the annualrelease of that. If you don't know
what that is, no joke. They take a different birthday cake every year
and throw it into the match tonand let's get nuts and it's a lot
of fun. So great people overthere, Tany and Patrick. There's a
name drop right there. Bill you'reon, come on there. It is
thank you. I want to thankthem for sponsoring and bringing you this last

(01:13:21):
segment of the show. All Right, we've got a couple of feel good
stories of the week. We wantto you know, are uh we uh
Tom Ward he was a longtime broadcasterin Houston and uh and to conclude tonight's
broadcast, we'd like to leave youwith a feel good story. And so
we want to leave you guys feelinggood. But you get a two for

(01:13:43):
this week. Because Houston, youkind of got kicked by that hurricane.
So we're gonna give you two feelgood stories. So the first one comes
from They're not So terrible City ofMilwaukee, Wisconsin. Uh where to Milwauke
Hockey beer sign collectors had acquired avery rare and historic piece of beer memorabilia.

(01:14:08):
It was a Schlitz beer sign thatwas displayed on top of a local
hotel used to be on the NorthernPines Resort in Butternut, Wisconsin. And
this is a four sided Schlitz beersign that dated back to nineteen sixty four.
And they just got it and itshows up and this thing was heavy.

(01:14:31):
I mean we're talking two hundred andfifty pounds I think it was five
feet tall, big monstrosity. Wellthey just get it. It arrives and
the next day porch pirates stole thebeer sign. Security footage shows that a
dark pickup pulled up in the middleof the day, broad daylight, and

(01:14:55):
they jumped out and prked this thing. I mean they picked it up and
hauled off with it through the boomgone and they were gone. And of
course they were shocked and saddened bythis entire thing. They thought it was
a scrapper, and so they tookto the police, of course, filed
the report, and then they tookto the news and said, please,

(01:15:15):
this is a piece of history andit cannot be replaced. Please please,
please do not scrap it, noquestions asked, just return it. And
they're hoping that the thieves were listening, because this is a piece of Wisconsin
history. So they begged and theypleaded, and apparently the thieves heard what
happened. Yeah, Chad, theword went out and once they heard that

(01:15:40):
it was such a valuable piece andeveryone was looking for it. Of course
them being caught on video didn't hurtany It was returned a couple of days
later, wrapped in sack, deliveredto the back door of the antiquary.
Wow, the antique that's a goodword, like, all right, So

(01:16:01):
the anonymous call, they got, anonymous call, said we're sorry about stealing
it. We'll bring it back. They covered it up so it wouldn't get
damaged, dropped it off to theantique store, and now it resides back
on their front porch, this timesecured in place, a feel good story
that the thieves brought it back, and then they got in a car accident

(01:16:23):
on the way home. No,I'm I just made up that part.
But that would be awesome. Thatwould be perfect karma if you believe in
that. But yeah, sad story. Piece of memorabilia stolen, is highly
sought after, can't be replaced, and shows up and then next thing you
know, some porch pirate comes andsteals it. Yeah, but they did,
they did return it. Todd says, I can't believe it's here.
I know it's only a sign,but it's part of our identity. There

(01:16:45):
you go, and there's a feelgood story of the week. All right,
Well, we're gonna put a bowon the show with this one here,
and we got to set it uplike thieves. How's that a feel
good story? Brush the theft? All right? How about this beer can
put a strain on your marriage?Okay, how's that a feel good story?
Well, being a newlywed can betough. It can be really tough,

(01:17:06):
you know when you have that firstfight too. But what if your
first fight was created by beer andmaybe ten of your closest friends, ten
friends of the groom of a Belgiancouple returning from their honeymoon created an experience
that was probably the very first maritalhardship in their very short marriage. Oh

(01:17:30):
yeah, and beer's to blame forit and some shenanigans. When the couple
returned home and this Belgian couple theyfrom their honeymoon, they arrived to find
that their home was completely barricaded bybeer crates and they could not get inside.
These are plastic, heavy duty plasticbeer crates because over in Belgium a

(01:17:53):
lot of the beers are bottled, and so they put them in heavy beer
crates so that they're less likely tobreak. They don't use cardboard or anything
like that, and they stacked theseup to barricade the house. Now how
many crates did it take. Well, they saw the prank done earlier in
the year and somebody barricaded the entranceto a home using four hundred and eighty

(01:18:15):
of these beer crates. It wasquickly outdone with seven hundred beer crates,
and they thought, yeah, there'sten of us. We love this couple,
let's out do it. So theydecided to do eight hundred and sixty
beer crates and barricade the entrance tothe house. But wait, there's more.

(01:18:39):
Not only did they do that, they started loading the whole thing up,
and as they're loading the truck, they're like, you guys, want
to do more. They didn't dofour hundred and eighty, they didn't do
seven hundred, they didn't do eightsixty. They loaded the truck with two
thousand beer crates and completely in casethe house. How do you find that

(01:19:02):
many. They had a connection atthe brewery and they bought the ready for
this. This is the insane part. They bought the groom's favorite triple beer
from the brewery and filled all throughtwo thousand cases with the beer. And
so not only was it beer cratesblocking the entrance to the house, beer

(01:19:27):
crates full of beer, full ofbeer. They wrapped the house. I've
heard of houses getting wrapped in toiletpaper, houses getting wrapped in saran wrapped.
Yeah, this one got wrapped incrates of beer, two thousand crates
of beer. I had friends likethat. Yeah. Well, one of
them was an engineer and designed it, and they had all blue crates,
and then they got some pink cratesand they put a big heart over the

(01:19:51):
front door, like around the wholefront side of the house. And so
there's a giant heart there. Andof course they came home and they're like,
what the heck is this? Andof course it was a great prank
they pulled it off. But here'sthe best part. Not only were they
filled with beer, but in Belgiumyou return the bottles in the crates to
the brewery and you get a deposit, which means the happy couple will have

(01:20:15):
the pleasure of being able to talkabout this story forever, have an epic
story. But they're gonna be ableto give their friends beer because I mean,
it was all Painton like. Theycan sit around drink beer all I
mean, two thousand crates of it, drink beer, have a good old
time. But then they get tokeep the empties and the crates and then
as they get finished, take themback to the brewery and then collect the

(01:20:35):
refunds and that is their wedding gift. That's a feel good story. That
is a great gift. I lovethat God friends. All right, well
that's how we put a bow onthe show. LEVI. On a happy
note, Houston, we love you, and for those of you out there
around the world who are getting theafter effects of that hurricane, we were

(01:20:56):
sorry about that, but we lookingout for you anyway. For harbor Light
Bill, I'm Chad on your logicguy, Chad Building. Yeah, forgot
my name for a second. Andwe want to thank all of our wonderful
sponsors, which include Tantric Brewing Company, we'ring Alta, ten Hacen Insurance Group,
Superior Pest Control of West Michigan helpingus keep the lights on, Harbor
Light Brewing Company, Cast Branding, and the Backyard Grill. So again,

(01:21:16):
for harbor Light Bill, I amthe beer ledged guy, Chad Building.
I got it right that time.Hey, and we are signing off.
