Speaker 2 (01:48):
Astros lead four nothing on Bregman's twenty third.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
There is little doubt about that one. When it left
the bat had the right trajectory, got plenty of backspin.
Speaker 5 (02:00):
He got it out of here.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
That'll get the Angel's bullpen busy once again.
Speaker 5 (02:04):
It's gonna hurt. I'll still get it. Hours of sleep tonight.
Ross still have his cough, going back to the doctor Vick.
All right, my damn time. Let's just let's say good
(02:25):
before I get to Alex Pregman. This song is Who's
This of soul? This is one of my maybe twenty
five favorite songs of all time. What I just a
minute to jam? You break up with your girls, it's
raining outside, you're laying in the couch, You're feeling bad.
(02:48):
Put this song on and it makes you feel worse. Yeah,
it's depressing. The Manhattan's on American Top forty Case The
Case I'm with you here on this glorious saying in
nineteen seventy seven. I don't know what the song it was,
You're close, I mean seventy six. Wow, that wasn't bad
at all. Very good sports, Harvey. How the hell are
you boy? What a what a broadcast you had last night?
(03:10):
I called the Rockets win and then got in the
car and you did a It was almost like a
hybrid show. It was. It was Rockets and then a
lot of astros. It was a Bregman rap. It was
a Rockets wrap and a Bregman rap. We're wrapping up
Bregman's career in Houston officially.
Speaker 7 (03:25):
Now.
Speaker 5 (03:25):
We had all figured that he was going to go
somewhere else, right, It finally, after all this waiting, became officially,
officially official, and he's gone. He is a Boston Red Sock.
Speaker 8 (03:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (03:40):
I don't know how you handle that, because he's he's
on the Red Sox. If you're a Red, you could
be a you're a sock. That sounds weird, okay, whatever,
we'll war about that later. He plays for the Red Sox.
He does where he's going to be second base, where
he's gonna probably mash the monster's your friend, especially when
you're a pull hitter like he is. He's gonna get
a lot of doubles and a lot of easy home runs,
(04:03):
and he's gonna do great at second base. Second base.
Forty million dollars a year for a second basement, okay it,
I'll be honest with you. I'm blown away by the
not blown away by the short term of the deal.
By the way I went on that one, Yes, you do.
I also win on the dollar a way. Forty million dollars.
(04:26):
That's a lot of money. Well, yeah, it was either
gonna be a long term deal or a short short
term of opout opt outs. We talked about this siers
in the short term in opt outs, but the whole
thing season, I mean, he was getting what was the
tigers last year offer six one seventy one? Was I
think what Nightingale reported. Yes, So give me the quick
math of that. It's about twenty seven twenty eight million
(04:48):
dollars a year. That's a significant jump from the guaranteed
to the somewhat guaranteed of forty There was no one
except the Boston Red Sox, and it only takes one
to tango. Not too but well, actually takes two to tango.
One's got to be the lead, but forty dollars for
the next three years if he takes another and the
(05:10):
opt outs are on his site, clearly he I mean,
if he has average seasons, he's not opting out of that.
He's got one hundred and twenty million dollars coming for
the next three years. Yes, he's in a way betting
on himself that he's gonna have a good year next year,
then opt out and then get an and get a
big deal. So then let's say he finishes his contract
with Let's say he finishes his career with series of
two and three year ars. After that, he's only got
(05:32):
to really surpass thirty six million dollars of what the
because the yeah year to beat the Astros. Yeah, so
chances are he's probably going to beat that, but not
for sure three point fifty one to beat the Tigers deal. Yeah,
But also I believe that he he wanted the flexibility
(05:53):
to I think Alex Bregman wants to win. He wants
to win more, and I I mean locking in six
years with the Detroit Tigers. I don't think you're guarantee
you because you're gonna win. As we talked about a
couple of days ago, the Detroit Tigers have no history
of being free spenders. I mean, they are rather conservative
with their dollar amounts because the market doesn't necessarily dictate
(06:16):
that then all have a huge television deal. They're not
drawing three million to their ballpark. It's a good team.
It's getting better. I mean, aj Hinch has got them
on the ups. They beat the Astros in the walk
car went out of the Division Series. But I don't
know if we're thinking about penciling into Detroit Tigers as
a legitimate American League title contender for the next half
dozen years. Yeah, but if you're looking for somebody that's
going to spend and contend, then you would probably go
(06:37):
with the Red Sox. I'm blown away by forty minutes. Mean,
good for him, that's a lot. It's he's gonna have
to really have a gangbuster year for anybody for him
to tear up this one year after one year and
then go get thirty five, thirty six for six or
(06:58):
seven years after that. I Mean, my guess is he's thinking,
I'll cash this one twenty in and then maybe I'll
play on my way through three or four different teams
over the last seven years of my career make another
fifty million dollars and at the end of they still
made more money than what the Tigers and the Askers
are offering. All he has to do after this year
is have a good year and get five to one
to fifty for someone. Then that adds up to six
one ninety. Yeah, it was just still at the end
(07:20):
of the day, more than what the Tigers and the
Askers are offering. Right and honestly, again from the sense
I get from people, is good for Briggs. There are
some that are bitter about it. There are something like
why would you take the short day? Very upset? First
of all, it's his money, not ours. Uh, it wasn't
a disk towards the Astros. He was looking. He was
(07:41):
all about and we kind of mentioned this towards the end.
He was all about the AAV. He loves the AAV.
Who doesn't love the AAV. He wasn't worried about long term.
He was worried about the quick. Well, oh, I'm going
to get right now. What's the most I can get
right now? And the most by far, I mean he
won't even there was no way that any of the
other teams. I don't even think the Astros would have
(08:01):
offered three one twenty.
Speaker 9 (08:03):
I don't.
Speaker 5 (08:03):
I don't think it would. I don't think the offer
that he the Boston Red Sox accepted he was in
the UH in the in the framework of what the
Astros were repaired off. Finily, the Cubs did three four
to one. That's still not close. No as not. That's yeah,
so betting on himself. But at the end of the day,
(08:26):
if he's miserable and he's terrible, he's a two forty
five hit ohps above seven hundred or whatever it is.
He's got one hundred and twenty million dollars for the
next three years.
Speaker 6 (08:34):
I mean he's not.
Speaker 5 (08:35):
Yeah, he's you know, it's funny because there's no opt
out and there's no opt out on the on the
Red Sox. I mean they have they have said for
the next three years, you're worth forty million dollars a
year at second at second base. Good for him, good
big Brugman fan wish him nothing but the very best
for him and his family. He's obviously very secure and
(08:57):
you know, like I said, if he's pedestrian these next
three years and wants to bounce around from team to
team to team over the next five or six years.
He's going to surpass what anything the Cubs and the
Astros and Blue Jays or anybody else is willing to offer.
So he was patient about it and gonna probably do okay,
unless unless he falls on the map, and unless he
becomes a hose Bray and does that. He's got one
hundred twenty millions. So first, next three, okay, I mean
(09:20):
pretty good, Bunny seven one three, two, one two five seven.
Out of your thoughts about Alex Pragman, out your thoughts
about the Rockets win last night, your thoughts about I
just don't get it. Today at eleven thirty, your thoughts
about the Texans new offensive coordinator being announced to uh
we uh for the public today will carry that press conference.
Three at one o'clock he made okay, twelve thirty, we
(09:40):
believe it or not. Today at one fifty, we got
a very busy show, but a lot of it early on,
especially is with Alex Pragman. We'll also check in West
Palm Beach with Gordy coming up at the top of
next hour ten thirteen. You join us now with your
first impressions Your first reaction to Alex Pragman is now
a member of the Boston Red Sox seven one three
two one two five seven ninety Go.
Speaker 10 (10:02):
Back to Matt Thomas and Ross via Real Fine on
Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (10:14):
I've heard about it.
Speaker 11 (10:16):
I don't think it's official yet, but you know, so
I won't comment on that. Look, I would say, you know,
if it's true. Uh, you know, I'm happy for Bregman.
You know, it's had a great run here, you know.
And so that's all pretty much I could say about it.
Speaker 5 (10:33):
So make the best of this.
Speaker 12 (10:35):
Dasz.
Speaker 5 (10:35):
Maybe he's trying to confirm the story. Maybe he doesn't believe.
Channel Robe Moniless Learn ten eighteen. The Sports Talk seven
ninety is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. We take
this program today until two pm. We want you to
join us. Seven one three two one two five seven
ninety seven one three two one two five seven eighty Again,
a couple more impressions from me, and then we'll get
right to your phones. Short term didn't surprise Red Sox,
(11:02):
didn't surprise forty million yet, Ross very on a short
term and not the shorts, I mean three years incredibly
short but it's pretty nice for a mini deal. He
was looking for lengths. You didn't get the lengths, but
he got the girth. That is the easiest clip in
the history of this show. See you on Friday or
see you tomorrow and the width there you go. Yeah,
(11:27):
it was what it was gonna take. The Red Sox
clearly interested Alex core. They talked about him pushing for
this move basically the entire time this was going on,
but they didn't want to commit long term. So if
you're not gonna do that, you got to beef up
the short term deal. And they did apparently came together
very quickly last evening and now he's with the Boston
(11:48):
Alex Cora probably called ownership and said, that's my guy.
Mm hmm, get him. He's he's out there. We need
we need a middle of the lineup guy. We need.
We've got a spy up spot open frame won't be
at third, but we got a spot for with It's
an extremely high baseball like you, who's gonna help everyone.
He's gonna help all the hitters, he's gonna help all
(12:10):
the pitching staff.
Speaker 9 (12:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (12:12):
Here's the thing though, and I don't want you to
research it because you've got a life. Can you name
a player in Major League history that gets a goal
glove at one position and then changes to the next
position in a new position the very next year. Yeah,
I'm sure it's happened. I wonder if we talked about
(12:33):
a Rod moving to third. I don't know if he
was a raining gold glover. I mean, let's think about
the ones. Most the ones I can think off the top.
Craig Bigio was never I don't believe ever won a
gold Glove at second correct. I think he did. Maybe
he did, but I mean it wasn't like Okay, so
a raining we're looking for a raining goal glover to
(12:54):
switch positions the position and change that. I think of
a Rod going from short to third, Rag going from
catcher to second to center field, Lance Pertman going first
base to center field, cal Ripken going from shortstop to
third base. Uh yeah, Bis she had won four Globe
(13:17):
gloves between ninety four and ninety seven, but was it
but then switch to one O four oh three? Yeah,
so it was several years ort of that. It's just funny.
I'm sure it's I would say it's happened, because when
you talk about one hundred years of the history of
the baseball. I don't know how long goal Glove's been around.
You know what, let's tally happen at some point. I
don't like to make a bet on it's probably rare.
I'm gonna go ahead and call me wrong if I'm wrong. Okay,
(13:40):
you can say it's never ever, once in baseball history happen.
Now again, I don't know who. I guess we could.
We could check in with the baseball Bros. But does
anybody won a Gold Glove and then immediately swap positions again?
You're right, baseball is one hundred plus years old. Do
you tell me that no one's ever died? It's probably
happened somewhere. I mean, I can't even I mean, I
(14:03):
know the goal glovers have retired, but to fly touch
in position, we know from active to retired. I get
that the first award was given out in fifty seven.
It's I'm sure it's happened somewhere. But but then you
isn't that weird to think about that that all of
a sudden he's going to a new baseball team, which
is not out of the ordinary, but he's going to
play a new position. After winning a gold glove at
(14:24):
that respective position. Mm hmmm, all right, who could who
could be the who'd be the biggest baseball dork? We
could ask about that, Charlie Polilo is he busy? Probably not?
You know, we could text Wax.
Speaker 8 (14:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (14:37):
I was saying to think Chandler Rome big baseball nerd
breaking stories. Good for Chandler. He was first on it.
He was, although other people were trying to give this
and where can you hear him exclusively? Matthew right here
in the old seven ninety in the afternoon. Hi, I
think probably would enjoy our show more though I think
he was on the morning this, This was this morning man.
He's a seven ninety guy. He's our seven aunty insider.
(14:58):
Yes he is. All right to the phones we go
and won three two one two five seven ninety. In
terms of longest wait, we start with Damon Placido Polanco.
Speaker 9 (15:06):
There you go.
Speaker 5 (15:06):
You're wrong already? Yeah, who did that? Who tied you that?
I'm telling you that ahead, you're wrong, matt I'm I'm glad.
I want to You know, this doesn't give me any
pleasure to say you are wrong. No, it doesn't gives
you a lot goe and tell me what about Placido
Polanko won Golden Glove at consecutive two different positions in
consecutive years, So he won one at second base and
then at third base the next year. Okay, well there
(15:28):
you go. Hashtag I'm wrong. That's pretty good. I only
didn't take you very long to figure that out. Yeah,
that was the methodology I figured that would work, was
two different positions in two different years. Oh yeah, he's
so good. Yeah, he's a verso di versatile player, and
it'd be easy to just to smoke it out that way.
(15:49):
You smoke that all right? Damon and Tom Ball at
ten twenty three on seven Hoey, Hello, Damon.
Speaker 8 (15:56):
Dam Yeah, yeah, guys, doing today good?
Speaker 13 (15:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (15:59):
Doing today great?
Speaker 14 (16:01):
Uh that Alex Bragman the situation, I'm just gonna yeah. Yeah,
when I think back about uh Los and Springer, those
are correct, but after they left anyway, Yeah, with to
keep winning.
Speaker 5 (16:14):
Yeah good. Unfortunately, Damn, you got a terrible line. I
want to blame one. The way that was it could
be off that sounded like ours R. Let's find honestly,
Dwayne and l Passo, how do you sound today? Dwayne?
Speaker 15 (16:28):
Hey, gentlemen, what's going on today?
Speaker 14 (16:30):
You tell me.
Speaker 15 (16:31):
I was listening. I was listening today and Chandler Rome,
the gentleman who writes for the paper. I thought he
had some some some great thoughts and ideas about the trade.
But the one thing that he didn't I don't think
he thinks that he said or he didn't know, but
(16:51):
he Brethon's going to score like thirty million a year
until his contract is complete, which I think is a
good deal. That's just take home pay. But now that
the Boston Red Sox, they're loaded as far as pitchers
are concerned. Now they've got seven starters on that team
(17:13):
that will enable them to move into that second position
in the East. And not only that, but they also
got two relievers that they well they've had, but they
just gave them a contract for more years playing with them.
But this year, I think not only him being a
good third baseman, but he's not going to have any
(17:34):
problem at all playing second base for them. And with
that offense that they're going to have this year, I
think they're going to compete very well in that East
Division behind the New York Yankees. And you're talking about
some good games that are going to come on, man,
New York Yankees versus the Boston Red Sox. Oh man,
(17:54):
we're going to be watching some baseball this year. But anyway, gentlemen,
that's all I wanted to say. And God, bless you.
Speaker 5 (18:00):
Thank you very much, very nice to hear from you.
Every game. I'm sure he'll be on national television mat Yeah,
apparently Monday Night Baseball. It's the bust and Red Sox
and Yankee. The every Yankees Red Sox game is going
to be on either Fox, ESPN or the MLB Network
or TVs, I mean, or Hulu or It's Funny has
some games. I think the Lifetime Movie Network has picked
up four games. That's not shocking at all. All Right,
(18:22):
So here is the potential lineup for the Red Sox.
Jared Duran's and left Devers at third, Bragman would beat
third in play at second, Tristan Cassas at first, Trevor
Story at short, Masataka you see the d H Jiner
Uh is it well?
Speaker 16 (18:40):
Is it not?
Speaker 5 (18:42):
Will will Year William We got brallion on right, Connor
Wong the catcher, and Raphaela's first name SETI I think
it's Cien said no no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
(19:02):
we're not adding French like Pablo PLAGIONI was not retaliateed.
No Argentinian. Where's a heavy Argentinian influence in Italy? I
mean Italian influence in Argentina. Okay, well then so leono
MESSI don't know who that is. Oh please seven one three, two,
one two five seven. I mean that's a good lineup.
(19:22):
I mean, look, the Astros one to six is really good. Well,
one to five, six, seven, eight, nine can get a
little squarely, especially seven and nine occupying all three of
the outfield positions. A quick thing, we were talking about
getting to forty million and how big that was for
the Red Sox. I forgot to mention that there is
supposed to be significant deferrals in this deal. Yeah, so
some teams want to defer, some don't. What's about the
(19:45):
player too, Yeah, yeah, it's gotta it's got Every team
would like to defer. Yeah, why wouldn't you? Yeah, unless
you're trying to pay till later. Well, in some cases,
if you're trying to sell a team, you don't want
to defer because you want to have that stuck on
the on the bill for somebody to pay, right. Remember
when the Drake mcclan was gonna was selling the astros.
I mean he was dumping payroll left and right, lean
(20:07):
and mean here to the bone. Remember what was the
Scott Felman was the highest paid astro? Like what and
he's making like ten million years something?
Speaker 9 (20:15):
Crazy? Agree it was not good?
Speaker 5 (20:17):
Uh seven one three two one two five seven, Nintie
Stephen Huffman, we'll get to you. Our phone lines are
actually okay, which is a miracle in itself. That was
just the previous I don't know. Sometimes we have a
line that sacking up. It's weird, even though it's Internet phones.
So hopefully we're okay. Yeah, I think we. I do
want to hear from the people. We'll check in with
Gordy coming up in a half an hour from now.
I see is in West Palm Beach, by the way.
What is up with our weather? One day it's eighty
(20:39):
and next day it's forty seven? What what up with that?
I like a little chill in there. It's called a
cold front, mat but there's when it's a it's when
chill comes through and then makes it cold. Was that right,
Frank Billings? I appreciate you very much on that Thanks
for stepping in on helping out with that. Thanks seven
one three two one two five seven ninety seven one

Speaker 10 (22:01):
Matt Thomas, Ross Veril It's the Matt Thomas Show with
Ross on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (22:09):
That'll be in August.
Speaker 17 (22:10):
We've come along way from where we begin.
Speaker 5 (22:15):
Twenty seventeen championship. All loveout it. When I see you again,
when I see you again? How's that gonna do with
any Rachie ree in in Boston? Monkin Monuts, sign them up.
There are more monk and monuts in Boston. There are
(22:36):
rocks breaking bomb clam chowder. By the way, people are
taking jab at the salta. You don't even you don't
even know any of them taste it. If you tasted it,
I haven't had it. Are we going brutal honestly?
Speaker 9 (22:48):
No?
Speaker 5 (22:48):
No, no, no no. First of all, you can absolutely go
brutal honesty in the show. Secondly, I haven't now the
breaking sauce I had years ago was fine. I mean
I haven't had a bunch of it. It's not good.
It's mid It's worse than pace, really because Pace this
is mid past is baseline. If you serve past, I'll
eat it. I mean you wouldn't be happy about it, Like,
for instance, yesterday, I went to a Butterburger on the
way home yesterday from the Rockets game. You did, Yeah,
(23:10):
I was hungry. That's off your regimen, Matt. I got
the chicken faeted taco, which is a limited time offer.
It was delicious. They can cook a chicken fiet To
tell me, get this straight. You went to a burger
restaurant and got a chicken fieted. I wasn't feeling a burger,
but I wanted something tot because it's it's a it
was ten thirty at night. Well, I mean I have
a bunch of options. Tony's wasn't didn't have a drive through.
(23:30):
Put it that way. I don't know what that means
finding Tony's. You know a restaurant, I mean high end
Popoo was closed. That's the frozen piece of people. No,
Tony's down on Near and in the gallery area. It's
five star. You've nert you wouldn't be familiar exactly. No
idea point being is that I didn't feel like a
burger or chicken strips I was like, you know, that
chicken feed of taco looks good. It was. It was excellent, excellent.
(23:56):
So I put a little pit conte sauce and they
don't call it sauce, a couple kind of sense, and
it was med. It was mid. Yeah, that's yeah. The
waterburger pecante sauce is pace ish. Yeah, exactly, it's mid.
It's fine. Gets the job done. You don't hate it.
I needed it. It was acceptable. I appreciated it, but
it's not the guy would like, Man, I can really
go for a big old, big old bowl of chips
and water burgers, or excuse me, Betaburger's pecante sauce. I
(24:20):
think at the Green sauce too. I didn't know that
had all right here to help you. So we'll check
in with Gordy coming up about twenty five minutes from now.
It is first day of pitchers and catchers reporting ath
a lot of guy's kind of strolling the next handful
of anyway, we'll be there next Tuesday. We get their
Monday night actually, and we'll be there Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday broadcasting our shows from West Palm Beach, Yes, home
(24:42):
of one side of the freeway. Beautiful beaches, expensive homes
other side low end apartments and pawn shops. There's a
lot of cities like that, but when you think of
West Palm Beach that that just sounds hoity toity. Not well,
everyone's got a little CD area some Oh my god,
(25:04):
and we found it two years ago. Our hotel was
in the middle of a CD area. Oh, you're such
a whiner. That's fine. Floors are a little greasy, which
was weird, and the bloodstains were bad. How does the
floor get greasy in a hotel room? Can someone explain
that to me? Our phone is out, somebody had a
fish fry in there, and our remote control was actually
still attached to the television by a wire. That was
(25:24):
the one that was broken, and you had to go
get one. And the lady was giving you an attitude
or you're all upset because she was trying to eat
on her shift and you were bothering her. Yeah, and
she gave me a remote control without the you know,
the battery cover. It wasn't there, it was just it
was taped on. This is not going to end well,
the batteries are going to fall out constantly. Yeah, And
then the guy with the crackshivers. We've just given the
(25:46):
Chamber of Commerce for West Palm Beach. I can tell
you that for sure. Now part of it though one time,
did you go with me a four five years ago
and we stay in that big high rise condo? No,
I didn't stay any Well that was nice, that was swanky,
And when don't we have the budget for that? Now
we got your salary, well, actually it's the morning show salary.
Steven Huffman on seven thirty seven, Steve, good morning to.
Speaker 18 (26:07):
You, Good morning guys. How are you and this Bregman?
I couldn't be more happy for the guy. I like
him as a person. He's a great ball player. What
can we say? He got the deal that he should get.
And bottom line is my heart burn has been for
a long time, still is and there's no point in
(26:27):
me getting into all how I feel about this guy.
But he is what he is, and that's Jim Crane.
You know, he could have he could have retained a
lot of talent that went by bye over the last
six seven years.
Speaker 9 (26:39):
It was worth retaining.
Speaker 18 (26:40):
He didn't want to do it, and you didn't what
didn't really want to do this either? I mean he's
he's got a lock mode on how it's going to
be and that's who he is. He's not going to change.
I wanted him to change, But I'm gonna.
Speaker 7 (26:52):
Tell you what I really believe in my heart.
Speaker 18 (26:55):
If til Me Fertita owned this team from two thouy
and sixteen and now you have seen a much steer
result in terms of the personnel that's still here in
playing Steve Steep, Steep, Steve.
Speaker 5 (27:10):
I love you like a step brother.
Speaker 18 (27:11):
You know this right, Well, Steve, disagree on Steve, We're
going to disagree on this.
Speaker 5 (27:19):
This this the Houston Astros, for what nine years, eight years,
whatever number, has had the most success in the history
of its organization. Two World Series, multiple pennants, playoffs year
in and year out. If you're crushing Jim Crane, that
(27:40):
is that is a one hundred percent mistake on your part.
No owners perfect, He's been fortunate. No general manager's fortunate,
Matt fortunate.
Speaker 8 (27:52):
You know what does that means?
Speaker 19 (27:55):
And then developed through the system.
Speaker 5 (27:56):
That's what heased.
Speaker 6 (27:58):
That's what he's supposed to do.
Speaker 5 (28:00):
Steve, hire good general managers and hire people. Look, you're
fully when it came to keeping him mouth Joel that
is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. An owner is lucky?
Are you kidding me?
Speaker 20 (28:13):
Steve?
Speaker 5 (28:13):
That is stupid. That is one hundred percent ridiculous. Owners
are lucky for eight nine years. Give me a break.
Speaker 4 (28:24):
Come on, be smarter, Houston, for the love of God,
don't be a dumb ass sports town.
Speaker 6 (28:31):
Don't be Steve.
Speaker 5 (28:32):
Steve, I love you, but that was stupid, really stupid.
Come on, Joel.
Speaker 6 (28:39):
Stop.
Speaker 5 (28:41):
This team has won over and over and over and
over again. It made trades, it's drafted well, it's kept
the superstar. Your Dan's locked in all two ways. Locked in.
You like to be able to keep everybody.
Speaker 8 (28:58):
I get it.
Speaker 5 (28:59):
They've made They went and got Zach Granky. They wouldn't
got Verlin or not once but twice. Come on, people,
what the hell do you want? He actually threw down
his headphones. People, Matt is upset. Seriously, ah luck you
(29:27):
get I mean, come on.
Speaker 21 (29:29):
Alright, p TD's headphones right, Come on, Matt.
Speaker 5 (29:39):
We gotta save those astros. Last year in twenty twenty four,
were third in Major League Baseball payroll, behind the Mets
and Yankees. Now, Jim Crane does want to get under
the tax, as do Mo's owners, he's unless you're already
(30:00):
paid once. He doesn't want to pay twice. That's his prerogative.
He's gonna do what he wants to do because this
is prerogative. And he made him a six year, one
hundred and fifty six million dollar offer. US Houstonians can't
allow Steve to come on these air waves like that.
Speaker 6 (30:17):
You got it.
Speaker 5 (30:17):
You gotta find your sport, you gotta find your people,
and you gotta say, hey, is every owner perfect?
Speaker 8 (30:23):
No?
Speaker 5 (30:24):
Do some owners? Let go, guys go. The astro said
goodbye to Carlilal's career. It was fine. They said goodbye
to George Springer. Things went well. They said goodbye to
Garrett Cole, won a World Series. They fired the best
general manager in the business, they fired one of the
best managers in the business, and the ship kept going.
(30:50):
I have to fight this. What's Houston sports fans? What
do they want? I fight this unlimited spending and championship
every single year from every team, or or if you
don't do that and you still win, you're just lucky. Yes,
I mean.
Speaker 7 (31:08):
God, just.
Speaker 5 (31:16):
I get disappointed sometimes and I'm rea shouldn't. Yeah, we
have to realize, as I mentioned third in the payroll
last year. Like if we were in Tampa Bay and
you want to say the owner is cheap and they
don't want to spend any money, I'm with you Oakland,
now Las Vegas. Of course, in Seattle they don't spend
any money. Like there are teams that don't spend money
(31:39):
and don't care. Jim Cray and the Astros are not
one of them. Now they don't spend with the Yankees
and the Dodgers, and the spending doesn't always guarantee results.
Ask Steve Cohen as the Angels, how many The Mets
payroll was over three hundred million last year, highest in baseball.
Did they win a championship?
Speaker 22 (31:58):
Ment?
Speaker 5 (31:59):
No, they lost the Old Series. They had the highest
pay payroll in twenty twenty three, the Mets, Oh, the Mets. Okay,
when the Yankees have been the Astros bitch for the
last six years, I mean it's good meant have had
a top two payroll for like three four years and
(32:20):
it's not resulting in World Series championships. Here in Houston,
it did. And you know what, is there an alman
of luck to winning championships? Of course there is. They did, Yeah,
there is it's because you just could. You put the
time in and you put the effort and you spend
(32:40):
the money. Doesn't guarantee your results. You gotta be lucky,
you gotta be good. They got a little lucky. But also,
if you're good every year, the luck is gonna fall
your way, which it has twice. But the Astros in
this run have beaten the Dodgers multiple occasions. They have
beaten the Dodgers, the Yankees. They have beaten an excellent
(33:02):
Philadelphia team who in that going into the World Series
was the hottest team in baseball, even hotter than the
Astros were. They've beaten the Reds. I mean they it's
not like they've been they've been fluky. And how they've
gotten to where they are. They lost to the Nationals.
Nationals were lucky. Nationals were lucky. That's how it goes.
(33:22):
But if you're good every year, if you're making the
playoffs every year, you're gonna make your own luck, which
the Astros have done. Yeah, you gotta be smart, and
you can't wait, you can't. You just can't say yes
to everything. And I'm look, I am not a fan
of frugal owners either. There are way too many frugal owners.
Jim Crane maybe a lot of things. He ain't frugal,
He's just smart. He just has a philosophy about how
(33:44):
he spends, and it's worked out pretty well. I've been
pretty As a lifelong astro fan, I've been pretty happy
about it, actually really happy about it. Ten forty five
Sports Talk seven and eight. I need a deep breath.
I need a cigarette. I'm smoke. Just relax, Manny how Mus,
Just to relax. I got you with me. I'm relaxed.

Speaker 10 (35:07):
Matt Thomas, Ross Viel It's the Matt Thomas Show with
Rossi Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 5 (35:14):
Ninety ten fifty one on The Matt Thomas Show at ross. So,
you know, for o man, Steve is something, you know,
I want to get a cup of coffee to calm down,
which probably the wrong thing to drink. Yeah, when I
took a couple of non dairy creamers that we had
in the office and I'd put them into my coffee
and they curdled. So see if you have scoreboard on me,
got me mad and my coffee cream of curdled in
(35:35):
my coffee. We get some real milk in her. Hey,
why don't you I'm drinking black coffee, Matt, Come on,
it's time to grow up. Oh you're saying that I'm
not I'm not mature if I put cream in my coffee. Yeah,
it's tund to grow up.
Speaker 8 (35:51):
Let's go.
Speaker 5 (35:51):
So you're saying grown people put drink their coffee black.
All right, So I definitely can't put the cream in.
Fun day in there. That's a double doozy for you.
You know what, you do whatever you want. No, it's
not you're gonna be making fun of me. I'm not
making funny me. Well, I want a cup of coffee,
can't get it because the cur because all the coffee
creamers curled here. All right, we're doing great. Ten fifty two.
We'll check you with Gordy and Florida coming up in
(36:14):
just a couple of minutes. I do not apologize. And look,
Steve's called the show for years. I love him. I
guess I step brother. We appreciate you, Steve. It's just
we've had we've had baseball greatness for a long time,
and I don't dissipate it. I don't aticipating. I mean
it might have a drop off this year a little bit,
(36:34):
maybe more of a challenge. May not be a slam dunk,
but I'm telling you, you know who you know who
doesn't isn't bothered by Alex Breman going to the Red
Sox all things. Consider's probably hose Al TV. He's like, man,
you get your money. He wanted him here though. Yeah,
he's probably a little disappointed. I mean, he's probably a smid.
He's just trying to play left field for him. Come on,
apparently it's gonna happen regardless, it's gonna happen whether he
(36:56):
was there. Yeah, but they all want to get their bag,
they all everybody. Everything is driven in life, literally, but
most things are driven by what you can earn. And
I do not blame the Astros for not wanting to
pay one hundred and twenty million dollars for a for
(37:18):
three more years of Alex Braigman. I mean, the Red
Sox wanted to overpin. They they did overpay, But that's
good for him. I want to be overpaid for something somewhere.
And guaranteed the Astros couldn't get in that game. Nobody could.
Tigers didn't want to get in that game. The Yankees
didn't want to get in that game. The Blue Jays
(37:38):
didn't want to get in that game, The Cubs didn't
want to get in that game. The game the game
was he was. He was competing against himself and finding
someone that was going to say, yeah, we're not going
to give you the six or seven years that you wanted,
but we'll make it worth your while for the next
three years in a big way. And they did. And
if he was there, and if he bats three nineteen
(37:59):
with thirty five home runs to drives one hundred and seven,
tear that contract up. They're bringing the juice ball back. Well,
it's fine left field that you know, he's gonna be
on He's going to be hitting that against the Monster
eighty times a year thereabouts. Yeah, yeah, he his swing
will play well in Boston. I think my swing will
play well in Boston, don't you think?
Speaker 23 (38:20):
No?
Speaker 5 (38:20):
All right?
Speaker 8 (38:22):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (38:22):
Mike in San Antonio at ten fifty four The Matt
Thomas Show with Mike with Mike with Ross, Mike, thank
you for holding Good morning.
Speaker 24 (38:30):
Hey guys, Matt, I don't blame you one a little
bit for losing it like you did. This needs to
be a you know, is his name, Steve, shut your
bomb ass up. Yeah, I mean, you know, And the
thing at the point I want to make is about
those players, the ones you mentioned, Cole Springer, Care Bragman Day,
they coast to leave. And I get it. I mean,
Bregman's getting what twelve to fifteen million dollars more a
(38:51):
year and he's going to get anywhere. Yeah, he's going
to go. But those players chose to leave the Astros.
They made him, most of them competitive offers. Bregman's offers
good in my opinion, because to leave. So you know,
it's you said it. Well, you basically said everything that
I would say just about I'm an Astros fan too,
But what do you want? This team has been year
after year after year winning even losing these great players,
(39:14):
and Jim Crane has spent a lot of money. He
went out and got even though it didn't work out,
he goes out and spent a boat load on a
bray you this year he gets Christian Walker. Yeah, I
don't know how anybody can criticize. It's been the most
successful franchise in Houston history.
Speaker 9 (39:29):
So don't blame you.
Speaker 8 (39:31):
I was over here.
Speaker 24 (39:31):
What does this guy saying anyway? So that's just the point.
I wanted to make a great win for the Rockets
last night.
Speaker 13 (39:36):
I was.
Speaker 24 (39:38):
Enjoyed it that Durant was on fire. I know, I
just enjoy the show, guys, and keep it up.
Speaker 5 (39:44):
Thanks MIKEL. Appreciate the phone call. And by the way,
and did Kevin Durant. I mean, damn that that young
man could play some basketball and he's still young. He's
thirty six. I mean he's, you know, yeah, outside of
the basketball, a child, but young thirty six and all
those guys are hugging on him. Hey man, good game,
(40:05):
beat ch ass. Will you a good game for you? Still?
One bye? He was great. I'm gonna hide. I'm gonna
hide it. If he wants to get traded to Houston,
I'm all for it. Let's go. We've been depending on
the cost, of course. I mean, and again I mentioned
is yesterday. If he drops twenty percent, he's still averaging
twenty three, twenty four points a game.
Speaker 15 (40:27):
Hm.
Speaker 5 (40:28):
Well, he dropped thirty seven last night, thirty He played
effortless forty two or forty three minutes. The night before
at home against Memphis, got on the planet. They landed
in Phoenix, in Houston at three twenty in the morning,
goes the hotel, sleeps, has a little brunch, gets the
arena and puts up Honey the thirty seven last thirty
seven with nine assists five rebounds. The only thing that
(40:49):
he did was lossy last night is he turned the
ball over a bunch and when he turns it over,
he has zerops about going back to try to defend it.
He lets those boys fly. Yeah, so seven turns. Rockets
had I think twenty eight points off turnovers last night
eighteen turnovers. Yeah, going for the Rockets tonight. Golden State
is in Golden State. Put it back to back. They
(41:10):
were in Dallas last night and lost the Mavericks. Rockets won,
and so we'll get the two teams getting after it tonight.
We'll be on the year at six o'clock with the
launch pad six thirty the network pregame seven o'clock, the
tip time and email. Don't get joints this program today
at twelve thirty. Wow, what a show, all right, real
quick before we get to our buddy Gordy in Florida,
Kyle on seven ninety and ten to fifty seven. Kyle,
(41:31):
good morning to you.
Speaker 25 (41:33):
Hey guys, good morning, So I just had a quick question.
So do y'all think that the front office's attention is
going to go to fromber now and getting an.
Speaker 5 (41:41):
Extension to know with him?
Speaker 25 (41:42):
Because I know that his his contract's up after this year.
And I mean unless one of these guys steps up,
like if Arry Getty takes a jump, or if I
mean if blue Ball comes up, you think that they
want to extend Frobers. I just wanted to get you
guys's thoughts on that.
Speaker 5 (41:55):
Thanks, guys, I'm really mixed up about it. I would
lean towards no, I'm gonna guess he hits the market
as what I'm saying, I would lean towards them not
trying to make a legitimate extension offer. We'll get more
(42:16):
into that come up next hour. But again, things if
you want, say young, maybe things change or gets to
you know, seventeen eighteen wins. Gordy checks in from West
Palm after I tell you about Berkeley I Center. Would
you like to have great vision for this upcoming baseball
season to watch your favorite baseball team without having to
use glasses and contacts? Then you're going to call seven one, three, five,
two six eyes and mention me Matt Thomas, the lovable, affable,
(42:40):
calm demeanor to Matt Thomas, and you're gonna say, hey,
Matt's been telling me about Lasik from Berkeley I Center
for a long period of time. There is no financing
until twenty twenty seven. It's gonna save you over one
thousand dollars. You're gonna able to use your flex spending account,

three five two six eyes. That's an easy to remember
phone number. You deserve, not un worry about contacts. You deserve,
non do worrri about glasses. You deserve clear vision. Berkeley
I Center seven one three five two six eyes seven
one three five two six e y.
Speaker 1 (43:25):
Yes, lunchtimers, this is the Matt Thomas.
Speaker 5 (43:31):
Show, now number two of the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
You're on Sports Talk seven ninety one of the phone
lines are open at seven one, three, two one two
five seven ninety been talking, of course, very heavily about
the signing of Alex Bregman two the Boston Red Sox
three year, one hundred and twenty million dollars deal. Reports
(43:54):
that he turned down six years, one hundred and seventy
one million with the Detroit Tigers. So clearly at the
end of the day six six was never going to
be signed here in Houston. And well he's moved on
to greener pastors. He's going to go play second base
for the Boston Red Sox. And right now we are
joined by Chris Gordy out at West Palm Beach thanks
(44:16):
to Carbock Brewing Pictures and Catchers reporting and Chris Gordy
reporting as well. Gordy, first of all, how are you.
Speaker 19 (44:26):
What's up? Fellas?
Speaker 5 (44:26):
Here?
Speaker 19 (44:27):
It's a little chiley in Houston is a it is
a sweaty eighty five degrees here, such shining working on
my trying to get some color in the pale face,
you know. So okay, working on that, but a busy
morning here at Astro spring training.
Speaker 5 (44:41):
So we played some Dana earlier. He's not ready to
comment on it quite yet, but it's the worst kept
secret in the world. Everybody their mother said. Uh, did
Joe Spot allude to much at all about what Bregman
had to say or about the decision?
Speaker 19 (44:55):
Yeah, I mean a Spot would kind of said, you know,
he said a little bit more of the Dana. He said,
we'll happy for Breggy, you know, wish him the best
of luck and all that, but you know, we're we're
we're worried more about the guys here in our clubhouse.
And that was an interesting thing. I mean, Sean, when
I was going with Sean this morning, he posted a question.
He said, the asker is better, you know, right now
(45:15):
than they were ear ago. And the simple answer is no, Right,
you lose a Kyle Tucker, you lose an Alex Bregman.
You know you're a worst team, but you're not bad.
And that's kind of the interesting angle is once fans
kind of wrapped their heads around, like Christian Walker is
an absolute upgrade at first base, East South Paradis is
actually going to be a defensive upgrade for you. Uh,
(45:36):
you know, if if Oseeale twov is playing a lot
more you know, left field or or you know, Paradus
is playing some third I don't think it's a big
drop off from what Bregman gave you there. So uh,
I think once we get into the thick of things,
guys and fans start to kind of wrap their head
around these guys they have. I think you're gonna start
to realize, like, this is still a really good team,
(45:56):
a team that is still the Vegas perennial favor to
win the West, and still a team that is expected
to make the playoffs, and you know, it's just gonna
be some new I mean, I don't want to dog
on those guys, but Redman was not great for that
first month and a half two months the last season,
Kyle Tucker, they lost for half the season and still
overcame it. So again, it's not the end of the
(46:18):
world because they lost to those two guys. But yeah,
I mean it certainly has been the topic of discussion
here at day one A camp.
Speaker 5 (46:24):
All right, so take take the audience through what they
want to camp is like pitchers and catchers. It sounds
like it's just a handful of guys on each side
of things, but there's really more position players there. Kind
of getting in early, but as of Now, what have
you seen so far through the first official day of
these workouts.
Speaker 19 (46:40):
Yeah, I think everybody was kind of focused on watching.
You know, they do the bullpen sessions and we got
to see Hunter Brown throwing, and you know he looks good.
Runout Blanco kind of the guy that was. You know,
we didn't talk a lot about down the stretch of
last season to the offseason, but he was a god
sep for this team last year. I don't know where
they would have been without, you know, and have one
(47:02):
of the best cras in all of baseball. So you
got to see him throw. Got to see spent Righetti
throw a little bit this morning. This team is I mean,
once they get healthy guys, this team is going to
be robust when it comes to starting pitching. We know
that Lance mccullors is is throwing a little We're supposed
to talk with him a little bit tomorrow, but you
know he's not gonna be ready for the start of
(47:22):
the season. Neither is Luis Garcia. I talked to JP Frantz.
He said, there's no timetable. He's kind of targeting. He
told me this morning, all Star break is what he's thinking.
But if this thing starts to come together and they
start to get some guys healthy, you're gonna have a
surplus of pitching, you know. Hayden was that's the ass
Dana Brown a few minutes ago. He said he they
(47:43):
have him flight slated as a starter as part of
this rotation, so he's he's gonna be asked to come
in and contribute immediately. So it Yeah, today was just
kind of getting a feel for the pitchers, working with
the catchers and certainly some bullpen spots open as well.
Talked with some of the guys, as guy named Stephen
Oakert who was with the Twins last year. He's excited
(48:04):
getting a minor league invite here and proven what he
can do. I'll drop the video later this afternoon, but
I caught up with Force Whitley, who told me it's
his tenth spring training with the Astros and he gets it.
It's it's it's time to go for him. He got
his first taste of the big league last year, and
you know, he said he's worked on some things this offseason,
so it's just about getting on the same page with
(48:25):
these catchers yan Ar Diaz and Victor Carteni and says
Oar Salazar and yeah, I was actually impressed for for
BN Day one. They actually got in a good bit
of work today. And you mentioned a lot of the
position players are here, Chas McCormick, Jake Myers is here.
I mean a lot of the regulars are here outside
of Al Tube who they said should be along in
the next couple of days.
Speaker 5 (48:47):
Chris Gordy joining us from West baul Beach, will join
us again tomorrow, and then Ross and LB down there Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday of next week for our own spring
training coverage. You know, the reality is this, and I
don't know how much Dana will officially get into it
once it's all said and done, how much you'll talk
to Dana before while you're still there. But the internal
(49:07):
conversations that he kept telling us about, I think we're
very quick ones. They were. You know what, Alex is
a great ballplayer. We appreciate his time, but we moved
on and I will We'll never get the true answer
to this, but I'm very curious about how much of
this was perhaps owner driven to say, let's keep the
lines of communication open, and how much of this was
(49:28):
Dana going I've done everything I can I've got an
assemble a twenty six man roster for the start of
the baseball season.
Speaker 19 (49:35):
Well, full transparency, guys, I didn't realize. Apparently there's a
there's a deal in the collective bargaining Agreement that says, basically,
Dana can't come out and say, no, we've completely moved
on for Alex pregnant, because Scott Boris could could hit
him with I think they said collusion really by saying, oh,
you're not even going to entertain talking to my client.
(49:55):
So I think that's more or less when when when
you find up that that wrinkle. I think that all
this was Dana. I think if he could have come
out and said, now, look we moved on. We wish
Alex the best, but we're moving on. If he could
have said that a couple of weeks ago, months ago,
I think he would have said that. But I think
that's where they really were. I think this whole thing
of yeah, we could see you have eternal conversations, I
(50:16):
think with him just trying to keep you know, say yes,
the door's open. We haven't completely moved on. But I
think realistically they moved on. They were not you know,
all these discussions of oh, they up their offer and
all this, I think all that was kind of ogwash.
It seems to me they were never going to resign, right,
so this thing was always yes, let's.
Speaker 5 (50:37):
Go back to that. Then maybe then, Chris, maybe there
wasn't an a bitch in the offer. Maybe that was
an Erodinuce report. Maybe that was somebody just floating something
out there to just to get some attention. Because if
you've moved on and it sounds like everything that Dana
would say to us, at least into the media and
to the fans, you wouldn't all of a sudden bump
it up. I mean, what would you do that for
to increase your interest in them, or to do that
(51:00):
to make it sound better. I don't know. I think
there are some lines of communication that were blurred on this,
and I think there was a message that was being
put out there that may not have been complete on
hundred percent accurate.
Speaker 19 (51:10):
Yeah, I mean, just just screen between the lines, guys.
When they traded for Escoc Paratus, the guy they wanted
the trade deadline last year, a really good infielder who
could play third base, and when they signed Christian Walker
as the first base I mean that kind of said like, yeah,
we've moved on, We've got our new infield. And if
you listen to Dana's quotes, he was very dismissive. I
mean he just was, you know, yeah, we continue to
(51:31):
have internal conversations. I mean, what is that internal conversations?
What are those last ten seconds? Hey, you want Bregnant back? Yeah,
I'd love that. I'm back. Okay, great. I mean that
I don't understand what these internal conversations would have been
other than you know, hey, we're keeping the door open.
But they moved on when they signed Walker and they
traded for Paradis. They moved on, and so to me,
(51:52):
this was all just kind of waiting until seeing where
Bregman actually signed. Now I wish he would have gone
to the Cubs in the NL as opposed to the
Ale and the askers are gonna have to say them
six times this year. But yeah, it's good to at
least finally get some closure. But you're right, I think
it's a little Dana Hemmon and Hant today say well,
it's not official yet, it is. I mean, come on,
we're being we're being a little ridiculous here.
Speaker 5 (52:13):
Well, probably just semantics and I guess he's trying to
protect the lingo of it. So what is the goal
for the organization the next two or three days before
the all position players get there? What is what is
some some of the things that Joe Spotta would like
to see from his squad.
Speaker 19 (52:27):
Well, I think they got to start to figure out
some of these bullpen pieces, because you know, I watched
Brian to bring you out there. Josh Hater by the way,
a little bit of a fresh cut. He's trimmed the
long hair. It's not as long anymore. We know what
you have in those two guys, but I don't You
don't really know what you have in the rest of
the bullpen. You have good candidates. I know they're high
on Caleb Ort. You know, he's a guy that's had
(52:47):
mentioned several times. You know, we'll see on the rest
of these guys. I mean, Bennett's SUSA is is back
in the fold, you know, Like I mentioned, Steven Okert,
the guy that that we posted the interview with earlier,
he's in the mix. You know, Taylor Scott, I think
we have a pretty good field that he's going to
be back, But all these other jobs are up for grabs.
And you know, there's there's a lot of internal candidates
(53:09):
and then guys who are out of options, and like
I mentioned, Forrest Whitley's one of those. You know, we're
going to find out who emerges. But that's really it
always seems to figure itself out guys. But that's been
one of those secret things. Like the Asters have been
really good during this championship run about the last eight
nine years with the bullpen, it is really they've had
guys emerge here and there, and they've all it's always
(53:31):
been pretty reliable. So to me, that's kind of the
storyline over the next couple of days that if they
feel pretty good about the rotation, right, you know, with
with Hunter Brown and Arraghetti and Bloco and was Neski
and those guys. But to me, the biggest question is
who's going to merge out of this bullpen. I think
that's what they want to find here over these next
couple of days before the physician players get here.
Speaker 5 (53:50):
All right, who brought you to West Palm Beach? Besides
a great airline? If it was even a great.
Speaker 19 (53:54):
Airline, I don't know, Yeah, well it was Okay, all
of our great spring trade covers always presented by Carbo
Brewing and the Crawford Bocks. It's always in season, whether
it's spring training, whether it's the start of Major League
Baseball season. Make sure you guys are loaded up with
plenty of ice cold Crawford box from Carbock Brewing. And
we'll be back at dyk In Park before you know,
at Kraft and open some tall boys and seeing those
(54:16):
tequila sunrise stripes all over the ballpark, you know, and
it's a sweet taste of the Crawford Bok at Carbock
Brewing and we appreciate that bringing us our comfort. Heare
for spring training just getting started, Maddie will have plenty
of content at Sports seven night dot com all week long.
Speaker 5 (54:28):
You're that Sport seven nine zero dot com. Go to
that website, click it, go on right now, and then
check out locked onn SEC for all your radio appearances
throughout the Southeast. You're still able to do those from Florida.
Speaker 19 (54:40):
Correct, We've had to cancel a few. We're busy working
on astrog n.
Speaker 5 (54:45):
Wait wait a minute, Hauntsville, Alabama needs it's sec O
lineup dates for a spring practice coming up. What are
you talking about?
Speaker 19 (54:51):
Come on now, very busy, I got I gotta do
hits with all three of our shows. Got to take
care of the home station.
Speaker 5 (54:57):
Person I'm talking about. That's Chris Gordy joining us from Florida.
Heavy with us tomorrow on the program. It's a gesture.
You're thrown out there. We've I think UTIs got Arthur
writis Yeah, that too. I got you all right, eleven
thirteen on Sports Talk seven, Andy, thanks again to Gordy
for joining us from West Palm Beach. We have I
just don't get it coming up at the bottom of
(55:18):
the hour. All things I don't get, okay, And we
want to hear from you what you don't what don't
you get? This is an opportunity for us to help you.
By the way, today twelve thirty email Dog is going
to join us, and at one o'clock, the Texans officially
introduced their brand new offensive coordinator to the radio. Wow,
we'll be carrying that press conference here at one o'clock. Wonderful. Yeah,
(55:40):
I sent you a text about all the things we
were doing today. Yeah. What do you mean if you
looked at like when you were completely stunp I always
stunned it that Colin Coward's still on TV. Yeah, well, yeah,
that's fine. I'm change in the channel. You can change it,
but I know I want you to put some soccer on.
I don't care at this point. Eleven fourteen on Sports
Talk seven.
Speaker 10 (56:01):
This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross on four.
Oh damn, this is getting sad.
Speaker 9 (56:10):
Right.
Speaker 5 (56:12):
We will always love him, not like he's dying, not
like he's retiring. He's just taking in check somewhere else.
We've been mostly moved on for months. Yeah, this is
not like we're not startled by these things. Interesting point
brought up by Chris Gordy about Dana Brown being unable
(56:33):
to say we're completely out on Bregman that you know what,
as he says that I would qualify for a collusion,
that makes a lot of sense because you and you
take somebody out of the negotiations. I mean you could
informally say that we're not looking. I mean, yeah, how
about if you say I haven't talked to his agent.
I owe his agent a call. He keeps texting me
(56:53):
and calling me and I haven't returned it, and we're
having internal discussions and we're not re engaging. I think
a quick deduction would say that there's really no interest,
which makes me then now believe that the report that
we supposedly heard about the offer being increased maybe was
bump full of bunk. Perhaps maybe somebody said, hey, let's
go tell somebody in town that the Astros up their offer,
(57:16):
and the Astras could very easily have said and they're
not gonna come out in public and said, no, we didn't.
But I don't know how that some of these things.
I don't know either it's tough making heads or tails
of all this, because everything that's reported can't be true.
It doesn't make logical sense.
Speaker 23 (57:30):
No.
Speaker 5 (57:32):
But what it is astonishing to me, and I brought
this up with the first out of the show, is
the biggest deal we had heard. We didn't even hear
about the Detroit Tiger's offer until after the Red Sox
offer was accepted. So it was going to be six
years for one seventy one with the Detroit Tigers. H
that's a pretty good bump from what the Astros were offering. Yes,
fifteen million dollars more over six years.
Speaker 15 (57:54):
M H.
Speaker 5 (57:58):
Part of it to me was I don't think Bragman
was thinking that Detroit Tigers are going to be this
pipeline of free agency coming to their way, and that
maybe last year was more fluky than it was about
starting into something special in Detroit. Although I'm sure Aj
was quite convincing to Braggs. I mean, I don't think
I think the two of them had a great relationship.
I mean, I don't think very few players did not
(58:18):
respect everything that Aj Hinch did, so that is indeed.
But then secondly, it must have been about give me
the biggest average that I can possibly get, and maybe
if it's even on a shorter term deal. So what
I had a number in my mind that I wanted
to be paid per year and taking six one fifty
(58:39):
six from the Astros would have been a slight decrease
in average annual value. Yeah, it it just didn't end
up being a competitive offer with what he signed and
with what was on the table from other places. Yeah.
The question is, I guess maybe if the Tigers did
more years, maybe they did like seven to ten, would
he have changed his mind? Maybe? But no, but he
(59:00):
was willing to give him seventh year. No, clearly not.
And it's funny. No one in the business was giving
him seven to ten or seven years, regardless of the
dollar amount. I mean they just and that's why I
mentioned it to you last week. You know, maybe we're
down to about four or five players per year, max
getting the super deals like this year, who got the
super mega deals? Wan Soto? Did anybody else get in
(59:23):
the seven eight year category? How many years was Corbyn
Burns is a deal? I think Blake Snalls was five.
Max Freed got eight years. I think this in this
offseason here. Yeah, okay, so you know, maybe it's uh
and maybe it'll always be that way, and I still
believe it, and I will be and call me wrong
when I'm wrong and get on this. Unless Kyle Tucker
(59:46):
has an amazing season in Chicago, I think his dream
of an eight year contract is going to be a
little a little disappointing for him. Now yeah, I mean
if he if he, if he crushes it, good for him.
He's gonna be able to make get that mega deal.
Max Freed signed eight years to eighteen with the Yankees.
So yeah, there's there's some Maybe this we're down to
(01:00:06):
about two or three guys a year. He is thirty one.
Tucker's getting eat well up the bet we got fast
casual lunch, which I already owe you I thought you
want to do sit down lunch or what's the up?
The up is hmmm, ooh, you know what the up is? Uh,
(01:00:28):
we're gonna go with uh like a Rennie Rhana. Man,
that's pricey. I'm gonna make that, Matt Thomas cash. How
about two fast casual lunches? You want to double it?
You know how many do you own me to bet?
I owe you one? Okay, don't you as on me
one on the dollar amount to You never paid off
your bet when you said the Texans weren't gonna make
(01:00:51):
a splash. Okay, so you only just won fast casual.
Then we're doing cream barbecue right that fast cast That's
not a bet that was that's something else. Oh, I
feel like we go. You and I have each other
like five if you're on the round six months a year, dude,
don't even don't even try it. You want to be
invited to everything, and then you want to do this
(01:01:11):
and make all these bets and then you just cancel
on everything and you say you're too busy for everything.
I don't want to hear it.
Speaker 6 (01:01:15):
Matt.
Speaker 5 (01:01:16):
From here on out, don't all bets will involve drive
through breakfast A nine o'clock in the morning. That makes sense.
It makes more sense that right off the top seven
year them think. You don't think Kyle Tucker can get
eight years from anybody? What's the Corbyn burn steal? Yeah,
let's up at the bet. I'm ready Kyle. If Kyle
Tucker goes on the sable list two different times, actually
(01:01:36):
he's not getting eight years. Yeah, I'm not anticipating that.
Nobody can't can't predict injuries and he could have the worst. Yeah,
but if he doesn't and he has a good year,
he's gonna easily get eight years. Hold us he again,
twenty nine, twenty eight, twenty eight. Yeah, he's still in
that range. He still can't get it. Um what I mean,
I don't mind. I don't mind not bet too. What
(01:01:56):
did I say? He's still in that range, he still
can get it. You hear what I have to work
with every day you you started this bit. I know
this is not even and last week, to your credit,
you were all over it. I had very minimal, minimal participation.
That's fine. I felt good about that. This fake it
feels like it's gonna be a lot of me. You're like,
(01:02:16):
we're all looking for the guy who did this and
it's you? No, all right? Uh seven one three two
one two five seven ninety beny happen, Benny Hannah, Benny Hannah.
Or about you place? Abot you place? How about how
about uh just Korean barbecue? Okay?
Speaker 9 (01:02:32):
Yeah, good?
Speaker 5 (01:02:33):
We still need to go. You wanna go tonight? No?
Speaker 9 (01:02:36):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (01:02:37):
I got a Rockets game? What about tomorrow? I'm going
to Washington, d C. See, this is what I'm saying.
This is what I'm talking about. Folks. Take Connor around.
He's making I am actually I was actually gonna do that. Connor,
you available for lunch after to tomorrow. No, he's very busy.
He's got a thing with a girl. He's got Oh,
I didn't even realize that. You know he's giving he's
giving the gift of a rocket stick. I heard it's
(01:03:00):
something in a box. I believe is what he's What
are you giving? What are you giving her in a box?
Speaker 8 (01:03:03):
Connor?
Speaker 5 (01:03:06):
Chocolate choco in the box? Wonderful? Just just normal. All right,
we'll go. We'll go next week without Matt. I like
that idea a lot. We're gonna in Florida. Ba crap,
look at you all, you're you're you're fake. All right. Uh,
here's what we're gonna do next. On the radio program,
I just don't get it. This is where you called
(01:03:27):
in with something you don't get. Give an example, Roskin.
You go like, people don't get what.
Speaker 16 (01:03:33):
I'll tell you.
Speaker 5 (01:03:34):
I'll tell you what I thought I was doing. But
I'm not gonna do I was gonna say. I just
don't get it. Why is everybody so hang hung up
and angry at Alex Brigman. I don't think it's what
I do get it. I think it's a little bit
of you ain't with us, your ans people who are angry.
So I get it, but it's just dumb. Does does
Clinton hate Bregman?
Speaker 3 (01:03:50):
Now?
Speaker 5 (01:03:50):
I can't not. He's on it. He's on an astro astro.
We know Clint's the biggest homer on the station. So, uh,
if you're something you don't get, whether it's in life,
whether it's in sports, let us know seven one three
two one two five seven, ninety seven one three two
one two five seven, ninety eleven, twenty seven. It's the
Matt Thomas shold Ross. We look forward to your contributions next.
(01:04:11):
I just don't get it here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Do you have something in your life?
Speaker 26 (01:04:22):
It's just don't get no need to worry, no need
to We will discuss the topics. Just see if we
comprehend the things that may con use our friends.
Speaker 5 (01:04:32):
It's time to say I just don't get it. Sometimes
you got to crack on your own.
Speaker 6 (01:04:42):
Ross.
Speaker 5 (01:04:44):
I just don't get why the University Houston will not
fix its crime issues. President Gatur, this is on you. Honestly,
I'm sick and tired of hearing about crime the University
of Houston. I don't get why we have not look
raised everybody's tuition, the student fees, whatever, charge additional parking.
(01:05:09):
Let's protect our campus boys. I just don't get it.
This has been a problem for our school for thirty
plus years. Oh student rode at gunpoint. The students are protesting. Yeah,
it's not safe. It's just not and I'm embarrassed by it,
(01:05:31):
embarrassed by it. Just don't get it. Another thing I
don't get, Okay, why is the line at Berberger so long?
The drive through they're so slow? I got it every
time it took me twenty five minutes to get my
chicken feeted taco fries and iced tea yesterday. Well, they
probably were like, somebody ordered what now? Because if you're
(01:05:53):
they had to dust off the thing on how to
make that. No, it's it was on the little board there.
Speaker 6 (01:05:58):
I saw it.
Speaker 5 (01:05:58):
I'm not saying it's off menu. I'm saying how many times?
How many what percentage of people ordered chicken vegeta? Is
that at the butter Let's let's break this down. You
have a big pot of chicken fajeta, meat, vegetable, onions,
and peppers. They probably have to slice up a chicken
breast that they sandwich. Yeah, it's delicious, but it takes
one second. Your You don't you close your dining room
(01:06:20):
at eleven o'clock most nights. You have four or five
employees that are cooking, and you got two or three
at the register. It should be a machine. Rick Rolet
is a machine. Rudder Rugger. It's like molasses. Boys. Why
does Ruter Rugger take twenty five minutes to the drive through?
I just don't get it. They're just slow. Is it
(01:06:43):
because you want your hamburger a certain way that it
confuses them or something? But I mean you go to
you go to Rick Ronald's and you want to rig
rack without lettuce or onions and extra sauce. They can
seem to get that down particle. They've been the fastest
in the history of time. For drive throughs are meant
for speed, not to be able to comb through Facebook
(01:07:04):
for half an hour. Well, I'm sorry, you got your
hot ready to order a meal in a few minutes
and it took a couple extra minutes, a couple of extras. Fine,
twenty five too many. There's no way you were there
for twenty five minutes. I'm calling BS on that, and
there's no exaggeration. I'll call on the over I can
tell by your face too, you're exaggerating. Now I might
have an answer, call on the under go ahead please.
Speaker 22 (01:07:26):
Chick fil A employees are paid more, so they probably
have more motivated and sent to better employees at Chick
fil A.
Speaker 5 (01:07:35):
I like that than Mudderburger. That seems fair. And it's
always their pleasure too.
Speaker 8 (01:07:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:07:41):
Once I man and somebody at Runnerberger said it was
your pleasure. I say that, like, come the hell out.
Speaker 16 (01:07:47):
No.
Speaker 5 (01:07:47):
I've had them say that at other places and you're like, oh,
you've worked at Chick fil A too, or you did.
It's unfortunate that you can't say my pleasure anymore. Somebody
associating you with the with the chicken restaurant. That's true
if copyright of the phrase if taken it over, Matt
and that's okay. I just want drive throughs are meant
for speed. I'm not saying seventy five seconds and out,
(01:08:08):
but seventeen to twenty minutes to order burger, fries and
a coke is too much. I don't get it, okay, Matte,
thank you, Rossie. What don't you get? I go to Connor? Oh, Connor, Connor,
what don't you get?
Speaker 27 (01:08:23):
Well?
Speaker 5 (01:08:23):
Mineus something I kind of get.
Speaker 9 (01:08:26):
So.
Speaker 5 (01:08:26):
I did this a while ago.
Speaker 22 (01:08:27):
I was making reservations for Valentine's Day, as many do,
and it just seemed a little extreme for restaurants to require.
Speaker 5 (01:08:34):
Deposit to book like a dinner reservation.
Speaker 22 (01:08:37):
I somewhat get it, but multiple places were requiring it,
and it kind of just turned me away from wanting
to even book a reservation there, and I ended up
not booking a reservation at a place that didn't require
to Well, don't get it.
Speaker 5 (01:08:49):
You're unfortunately, and you're hiring places they're going to charge
you because they want every table fold and it's it's
what's a what's the equivalent to this? Deposits on anything,
for hotel rooms, on banquet for so you know, if
you can't show up, they they the chance of them
getting that table filled. Now, if you they except walk ups,
it's pretty good. But if they don't accept walk ups
and doing reservations, no shows are gonna cost them money. Yeah,
(01:09:12):
I'm sorry, but I'm sorry on her. I get it.
I just it just made me not want to.
Speaker 22 (01:09:17):
I just looked for alternatives and in other places that
didn't require it.
Speaker 16 (01:09:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:09:21):
And I'm sure your girl's gonna love the twelve piece
NuGet you're getting her for her Valentine's Day. I don't
make money like you, but I'm not going to. Yeah,
that's true. Uh So how long you've been dating with
this girl?
Speaker 6 (01:09:31):
Three?
Speaker 5 (01:09:31):
Four months long? Am I in the right range? Officially?
Speaker 8 (01:09:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (01:09:35):
Like two months officially? Okay, So we were seeing each
other before that?
Speaker 8 (01:09:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (01:09:39):
So would you say casual that it turned up? The
heat turned up?
Speaker 9 (01:09:43):
Right?
Speaker 5 (01:09:43):
It turned up? It turned up a notch? So flowers
yes or no? Yeah, candy yes or no, maybe a
gift yes or no no? And dinner yes? Yes, that
feels about right, not a gift. I'm my gifts a
big night dinner and uh, I believe in the evening
at the Malice in MMM and apparently I rubbed down
(01:10:06):
with baby will Ross what And you don't get I'm good,
I'm sorry, I'm just not feeling great.
Speaker 19 (01:10:14):
You know what?
Speaker 5 (01:10:15):
Yeah, I don't get why I've had a cough for
three monks. I don't get why somebody has a cough
and call for a week and a half does not
go to the document for me my second doctor's visit
in person, first in person, there you go? So what
you know what? Teledocts. I don't get you because animation,
I've been getting better progressively. Not you sound like crap
every day. You know what the hell you're talking about.
You're wrong, You're coughing up buckets of fun here who
(01:10:35):
was worse before? So you know what, I don't get
what you think you know what you're talking about? Because
I mess If this Wednesday I would be saying, shut
your mom ass up, I'm sure you would have. I'm
just looking for a clean, germ free studio for a
few hours. Well guess what there's been sucking on my
wife phone. I've been wiping it down every day that
(01:10:55):
you have done that at very least you could do,
Zach and humble at eleven thty seven. I've got one
simple question for you. What don't you get well Ross
took that away.
Speaker 20 (01:11:04):
I don't get why everybody's upset about Bregnant leaving. As
soon as he turned down the first offer, I knew
it was gonna be a goner.
Speaker 5 (01:11:11):
And fine, by me. Let it go in the trade
with Tucker.
Speaker 20 (01:11:14):
It turned out to work well for us, and we've
got a prospect coming in. And then we also saved
money to develop or get somebody else at some point
and not getting tied up for three or four years
with it.
Speaker 5 (01:11:26):
Very good, Thank you, Zach. Oh do you see the
photo of Brian mctecker took a cam Smith. No, he's ripped.
Well that's good. I mean, I mean he's gonna hit
fifty home runs. He's like Jeremy Peney, who he's Hercules.
Go ahead, yeah, you know, and I'm gonna go back
to it. I'm with Zach, I said, I get it,
but I kind of don't. You should know by now,
(01:11:47):
you should know the drill. If you're an Astros fan,
this is not your first rodeo if you want to
go said and say, Carlos core Le's, Oh, I can't
believe he didn't stay here. He was drafted here and
you know whatever happened to loyalty? All right, fine, but
by now you should be you. You should know the drill.
Carlos Correa, George Springer, Garrett Cole, all these other guys,
(01:12:07):
Kyle Tucker traded away, and now Alex Bregman, you should
know the drill. Why is this fan base still acting
surprise and calling Alex Bregman greedy and Bob all this
other stuff. It's up business. You haven't figured it out yet?
How haven't you? I don't get it because once you
Donna Houston uniform, you're never supposed to leave it.
Speaker 9 (01:12:30):
Whatever.
Speaker 5 (01:12:31):
Remember when Chandler Parson's got way U for pay to
go to Dallas. Well he also called the city dirty
mm hmm. That didn't endear him to the fans here.
Then he liked going out with older Cougars and mom
jeans and Dallas. I mean, what's wrong with that? Enough? Actually, yeah,
let Chandler get his not wrong, but Parson Chandler too.
All the Chandlers can get theirs. Have you got a
(01:12:51):
name like Chayla Jones, Tyson Chandler, That's all I got. Okay, Look,
I don't bemoan unless you just absolutely unless you got it,
unless you took money less money to go somewhere else,
which ross ninety nine point nine percent of the time
doesn't happen. Most guys leave because the contracts are better elsewhere. Yes, now,
(01:13:17):
there was there was minimal interest in the Astros, and
it's not it's not a whole. I mean, the offensive
productivity has dropped in the years, doesn't mean he didn't
carry value, doesn't mean that he's not gonna be a
great player for the Red Sox. Doesn't mean I'm gonna
be rooting against him when he plays the Astros. But
I mean they did make some adjustments. They just didn't
(01:13:37):
go well. We lost pregnant, We have no we have
no playing by Let me tell you what Dana Brown's
been doing. Dana Brown's been playing being as bad boy
for about three months now. Yeah, Christian Walker says hello
East like parides what up and ripped Cam Smith's like
I'll see you boys in late twenty five or maybe
even twenty six hopefully, And almost like forty Horme runs
each the next five years, and you guys be like
(01:13:58):
Alex who let's not get crazy. Quick question, Astros retire
Alex Bregman's jersey yes or no? Yes? Yes, you hesitated
slightly slightly. He's an Astro orange jacket Hall of Famer guy.
That's I mean, how many are you going to retire?
(01:14:19):
Obviously twenty seven.
Speaker 8 (01:14:22):
Yep.
Speaker 5 (01:14:22):
One for Correa days, Correy is not getting retired, Springer
not getting retired. Verlander Jim Crane won the team in
ten years. Probably I call it the Clyde Dreuks are less.
Alexander Rulans, Yeah yeah, Bregman's retired. I mean these retired.
Billy Wagner, Yeah yeah, Bregman's get his number retired. So
(01:14:46):
I got another one for you. Go for Alex Bregman,
Hall of fame, got work to do. I'd say a
lot of work, Hall of very good. Chance would be
all great. Go to Red Sox be in front of
the East Coast audience being ESPN more times. Le it
to Beaver. Let me pull up the old resume. Gold Glover,
two time World Series champ, only a two time All
(01:15:09):
Star career batting average probably two sixties. Huh ops, let
me see two seventy two ops career eight forty eight.
Mm hmm, call a very good, got a chance to
be great, work to be done. That five years meat
on the bone. As they said, how's al two Hall
(01:15:30):
of Famer? Yes, correct, first ballot should be, should be.
We'll see how many will you'll He's gonna some time
pass lets some of these old fogies die off. I've
been asking that for a long time. Olds Dodgy, holier
than that, Baseball Riders, three time batting titleist, three time right. Yeah,
(01:15:51):
it's gonna like eight time All Stars, mister two hundred
hit per season. Guy, gonna probably finish the three thousand career.
I'm gonna get close. He gonna get well, he's gonna
he's gonna stay in. I mean, he's got work to do.
Stay with me on this. He's thirty, he'll be thirty
five in May. He goes to forty. Can you get
to there? He's got twenty two hundred hits. That's eight
(01:16:14):
hundred away five years. It's gonna be close. It's gonna
be super close. One hundred and eighty five hits last year,
one of the ten greatest leadoff hitters of all time.
Just throw a number out. He's gonna have to really
turn up the heat. I don't think he's getting He's
got to play till he's forty to get there. I
(01:16:36):
don't think he needs three thousand to get there, but
it would, It would cement his mark. Anybody that's got
three thousand hits has been in the has been in
the Hall of Fame. Seven times Silver Slugger, three time
Battling title Batting It title Ist, nine time All Star.
Oh yeah, I was off by one. Yeah, MVP and
a first boller. Any better be a first second bout. No,
he's not good. He's gonna get seventy five. He may
not get ninety three, but he's gonna get seventy. Yeah, Yeah,
(01:16:57):
you're right. I think you're right. All right, Ryan and Chris,
what don't you get we'll find out next eleven forty

Speaker 10 (01:18:34):
Texas Matten Ross return return on Sports Talk seven ninety real.
Speaker 5 (01:18:45):
Quick, putting back to the phones. Why are the Dallas
Mavericks pissing off their fans? Look, they're mad enough as
it is that Luka Doncis got traded and now you're
being antagonistic and throwing them out of the arena.
Speaker 16 (01:18:56):
Ross.
Speaker 5 (01:18:56):
I've always learned something if people are really mad about
something in sports, it only has a certain shelf life.
Everybody that told me, like fifteen years ago when the
Astros went to the American League West, that they were
never going to watch the Astros again, there was a lie.
There was a lot of people in the brand I'm
mad and a Nogo would give you, get you watch
and you went back. There were a lot of people
that were mad about Luca being traded. But if they're
(01:19:19):
a Mavericks fan and they're a Dallas basketball fan, they're
gonna root for the Mavericks. It may just be more painful,
but Mark Cuban and the entire Mavericks organization and the
ownership group just tossing people out left and right, getting
pulling signs down. Just let people be pissed off for
a few days and let them get over it and
then start rooting again for the team. I seen the
Dallas Mavericks and the way you're treating your fans. I
(01:19:42):
just don't get it. You gotta protect the shield, Matt,
there's no shield, protect the brand. You're not protecting any
Dallas Mavericks basketball. We're covering your general You're completely an
f general manager's ass is what you did you're trying
to do. Nobody believes that now, a single person. Nico
Harrison believes it was a great movie. He's the only one.
(01:20:05):
So I just don't get it. But what happened? I
know there's people with signs. What would the signs say
a fire?
Speaker 8 (01:20:12):
Nico?
Speaker 5 (01:20:14):
Sell the team? Yeah, just if you're determinate, want to
sell the team, sign we're removing you. That makes sense,
I get it. You do not, absolutely no. You You
have to let them just be mad for a few
days and move on. That's what I say. What's the
grace period? One week? Probably the rest of the season,
rest of the year, people are there's no way in
(01:20:36):
April that people are gonna bring fire Nico signs into
the American Airlines Center. It's not gonnappen. No, you don't
want encourage his behavior. You gotta nip it in the bud.
Get him out of here. Get him out. You don't
want dancing in Waco either, do you. I'm okay with
dancing in Waco. Okay, make sure I encourage it. What
else are you gonna do in there? I mean, you
can do the number one attraction in Waco, the Doctor
(01:20:59):
Pepper Museum. So you don't even like Dark to Pepper.
I don't's so I wouldn't want to go. What's number two?
Baylor Bearry Athletics. Oh oh, the husband and wife a
couple that uh fixes homes up. That's not an attraction.
You can't. Yeah, you can do it. You can go
to their little community. They have a little shot to
(01:21:20):
their house. No, yeah, you can take Touris there a
little famous They got a famous building down there? Now,
what is it? It's a museum dedicated to them. That's
not a museum. It's like an area that they development. Yeah,
what do you mean? They have nick knacks with their
faces on them? Chip In Joanna Gaines, I think it's
their name. If you got to chip in Joanna's store
and you buy stuff for them and they're tea on
a TV show, you're a loser. What's up? I totally
(01:21:41):
get it. People love that show. People want to go
buy their stuff. Ridiculous, I get it. Ryan and Montgomery
on seven ninety at eleven fifty two, Ryan, what don't
you get?
Speaker 28 (01:21:52):
I don't get why I'm expected to go through this
guessing game with my wife to find a gift when
I know I'm going to get some doll of water
in return.
Speaker 18 (01:22:01):
I think gift should be.
Speaker 9 (01:22:02):
Banned for Valentine's Day.
Speaker 28 (01:22:04):
Also, Brennan Rout is getting better than Rudder Rugger every day,
So you got that right to just either step it
up or they quite expecting people to come there. But anyways,
I don't get why I have to go find something
when I'll tell my wife point what I want and
then still won't get it.
Speaker 5 (01:22:21):
Yeah, what do you want? By way? Can I ask
you what you want for Fountain's Day?
Speaker 12 (01:22:26):
I can't say it on the air.
Speaker 5 (01:22:28):
You so you want what a normal man would want
from his lady on a special day.
Speaker 28 (01:22:33):
I'll just say, yeah, the first part would be staked,
and then the second part.
Speaker 5 (01:22:36):
Yeah, that's March. That's March fourteenth. March fourteenth, Ryan, you
call us to celebrate that? Either, she ain't gonna celebrate
that either, Mark Ryan. Here's Ryan. Here's gonna do for
you March March thirteenth. We're gonna call your wife on
the air.
Speaker 28 (01:22:50):
No, write this number down you're ready.
Speaker 5 (01:22:54):
No, No, just have her. No, just have her call
us on March thirteenth, and we'll explain to her the
importance of that day the next day. Thank you very much.
At this point, I would just take steak and both
would be nice. Oh both, it's wonderful. But if I
don't choose, well, not the other thing. But you know,
(01:23:14):
steak is an consolation prize, Bob Wi. I would be
all for getting rid of Valentine's Day in general. I
think it's just it's a manufactured holiday based off of
grating cards and commercialization. Yeah, I'm okay with you. Mean
every holiday Christmas you still give a gift giving. It's
commercialized for sure. Yeah, the most commercialized Christmas. Oh, it's
(01:23:40):
just it's just the big it's the biggest time of
year to give gifts. Let's spend. Yeah, No, I love Christmas?
Who doesn't? But can we? How about this? It's also
we have to deal in realities. As Matt Thomas would say,
I know, let's get rid of you want to get
rid of it? What Valentine's Day?
Speaker 8 (01:23:54):
No?
Speaker 5 (01:23:54):
Why? Why not?
Speaker 3 (01:23:56):
Why?
Speaker 5 (01:23:56):
What's wrong? Do you enjoy it? Is it one of
the days you look forward to? You have to look
forward to it. But I mean, there's only so many
days in the calendar, Matt for you to show your
special lady. You can do that on January nineteenth. Tell
her how much you care about her anniversary in Valentine's
Day two days a year. You can't haal two days
a year. You should be able to give her the
gift of whatever you want to give, and she gives
you the gift whatever she wants. Three sixty five? Why wait?
(01:24:18):
February fourteenth? All right, well, yeah, if you hate your
partner that much, that's fine. Two days a year, buddy,
buck up, It's gonna be all right. Chris and Jersey
Villa John seven ninety Chris, I may ask you, what
don't you get?
Speaker 29 (01:24:30):
I don't get why the Red Sox overpay a washed
up has been who's hitting two sixty last year and
had elbow surgery. The Red Sox fans better hope there
are some good garbage cans in that dugout.
Speaker 5 (01:24:48):
Oh my gosh, Oh he hung on. So he's routinely
one of the worst callers we have. Thank you Chris
for listening and appreciate. No, you didn't know you you
say he's one of the worst callers. You that's not
a token of appreciation as a token of uh, we
hate you. No, I don't hate him. I don't hate
him either. And his call was not good, but I
(01:25:11):
bad call is better, no call I call in show, Maddie. Yeah,
we do take calls in the show for the good
and the bad. Uh are you familiar, Chris, of what
the this thing known as a gold glove? And he
was in above average hitter and he slipped seven sixty
eight ops, which for twenty twenty four it's a one
(01:25:32):
eighteen ops, still above plus but above average, but still
worse than what he had the last couple of years.
So it is what it is, all right, last call
for something you don't get seven one three two one
two five seven ninety seven one three two one two
five seven. Honey, NBA, you have increased your your back
(01:25:55):
to backs. I thought you were trying to get away
with it, NBA. I don't get your schedule. M I
think we should cut the All Star breakdown a day. Why.
I mean, do you have more time off? Because if
you if you give me that day, that means I've
got a puncher chance of one less back to back.
Rockets have a back to back tonight, they go off
(01:26:15):
week week, they come back, play a back to b
and they extend the All Star break a couple of
years ago. Yeah, it's too long, so the players wanted it.
I know the players are bitching about the length of
the number of back to backs. I know, Well, that's
why they're gonna go to forty I'd rather have shorter
All Star break and less back to backs. But that's
just me. I'm starting to believe more and more they're
gonna go with this forty minute thing. Game thing not happening. Chance,
(01:26:39):
I'm putting name on it. Okay, now it's not gonna
be soon. Well wait, so give me, give me a
range then once you ten years, Nope, this would be
a huge fundamental change. Yeah, why why Why is the
greatest professional basketball sport acquiescing to what the other tier
(01:27:00):
professional sports and college sports? Who should be the other
way around? Money? There's not more money, more than less.
There's more, more team, more players playing in more games.
Not in forty minutes. You're gonna cut rosters, probably you
don't think. Do you think they cut rosters? Players aren't
gonna agree that you'd be cutting playing Zero chance the
(01:27:21):
players cut a roster zero percent chance are playing forty minutes.
I'm not saying it's that. I'm not saying it's gonna happen.
I'm giving you a z look at this goose. Baby
sports are a goose. It ain't going to forty cool. Yeah,
I'm put money on it. I'm writing it down. You
better flape. What don't you.
Speaker 8 (01:27:38):
Get well, sports and tea plus or what I don't get.
Speaker 7 (01:27:42):
Right now is why are people holding eggs?
Speaker 5 (01:27:45):
And I understand there's a bird flu going on, but
it's like, not the end the world for eggs. People
did that with water.
Speaker 10 (01:27:50):
People did that with toilet paper during COVID and when
the port shut down last like last year, nothing, long ago, Like,
why are we hoarding stuff?
Speaker 7 (01:27:57):
It's not it's not the end of the world, guys,
calm down.
Speaker 5 (01:27:59):
Yeah, By the way, I scrambled eggs this morning, very man,
Thank you, Felipe. Uh what yeah, my least favorite way
of cooking an egg is scrambled scrambled eggs. All right,
you don't argue food in that. Oh come on here,
we've already in this conversation. Don't food. I'm sorry, they're
so special. How could Matt not like scar rambled eggs?
Speaker 7 (01:28:20):
I like him.
Speaker 5 (01:28:21):
I like him over easy, over medium, sunnyside, poached. What
other wise ommelet style? Scrambled it's just scrambled, No big deal.
Don't argue with food with Matt. Scrambled eggs and such
a sacrifice food item. It's so delicious. How can somebody
not like scrambled eggs food with me? Don't argue food.
You shouldn't scramble eggs.
Speaker 6 (01:28:42):
It's time.
Speaker 5 (01:28:42):
It's not even arguable point. It's just there anyways, Felippe,
I very much get it. People are idiots. Everyone was
hoarding toilet paper when the uh, when the ports were
shutting down. We don't import toilet paper, like percent of
toilet pay papers made domestically. People are stupid. Yeah, people
(01:29:04):
are stupid for arguing me about how all like scrambled eggs. Yeah,
you don't like sorry, and I said you don't like it.
That's fine. I'm just not gonna argue with you. Good
because you were just membling to your c Yeah, it's
like arguing with this with a six year old about
whether or not they like peas.
Speaker 21 (01:29:15):
It's you not.
Speaker 5 (01:29:15):
You used to waste the time. That's fine. You don't
like scrambled eggs, that's great. It would be in my
least it would be my least preferred way of eating them. Now,
I like scrambled eggs and a breakfast taco. It's great
because you got the egg, you got the bacon, you
got the sausage, you got the potato, the cheese, the sauce.
You like scrambled eggs. I'm not here fought in a liar.
I'm not gonna go gole I'm not gonna run to
Rainnies and breakfast TCCO got damn. Yeah, I'm not gonna
(01:29:38):
go get some ridiculous I'm not going to Rainnies and
saying I like two pieces of bacon, two sausage, too
fluffy pancakes and two scrambled eggs. I want eggs. Son
inside twelve o'clock Sports Talk, seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (01:29:51):
Lunchtimers. This is the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 5 (01:29:56):
I call it one too.
Speaker 2 (01:29:58):
Swinging at three point from way downtown. That's God. Alex
Bragman with the long ball. It's three nothings with two strikes.
Speaker 3 (01:30:10):
Bragmant popsy to two to fragment and that is hammer
de til aft Field and you can GES's not goodbye
off the community leaders signs three run blast for Alex
Bragman and the Astros are up.
Speaker 8 (01:30:23):
Free to nothing.
Speaker 6 (01:30:24):
Waited him out soil and he finally made a.
Speaker 3 (01:30:27):
Mistakes and Alex Bregman made him pay one.
Speaker 4 (01:30:33):
Bragman belts it due till left fils and this game
is over. One of the trade tracks, Ralinx, Fragman hod
walk off, hold run and the Astros winning seven to.
Speaker 2 (01:30:46):
Six, the best comeback of the year. Astros down five
nothing at one point. Bragman with the bat flimp that
landed in our booth.
Speaker 5 (01:30:55):
They can expell the pine tart. I guess would be
down ross and I gotta finish our dance here real quick,
then we'll resume the program. We're doing a serious slow dance,
aren't we. No, No, Le's just kiss and Say. When
I write a movie, the name the movie is gonna
(01:31:16):
be called Kiss and Say Goodbye. What's it gonna be about?
About a couple? Scrambled eggs? Me about scrambled eggs, che
riso m guacamole. Oh it sounds horrible, and Kendrick lamar,
it'll be a good Movie's twelve o seven. This is
(01:31:40):
the Quiet Store. I just think this is the Manhattan's
with us here on the seven nine. It's gonna hurt me?
How long is it gonna hurt Ross? I'm already over
and I think I'm fine. I'll get me too, you
know what. I'm so over it that we're gonna get
to something else. We're gonna move on. We got still plumbing,
(01:32:01):
oled bats sad Sauce playing. We haven't even played I
wanted to hear. I can't remember what I said because
we recorded me when I want a vacation twelve forty five, okay,
because we got to we have twelve you know, we'll
do it next segment because we've got May at twelve
thirty coach imy Doka, Yeah, Rockets coach. Okay, we're gonna
get his thoughts on the Alex Bregman signing. I'm not
gonna bring anything's about the opt out instructor zero deferred
(01:32:22):
deferred salaries, no thoughts. Yeah, as Alex Bregman at second base.
So the final time you know what this will be.
This will be the final Alex Bregman update in the
history of the show. Coming up in the next segment. No,
right now, we present to you the news at noon. Well, Matt, obviously,
the news at noon is that Alex Bregman has signed
(01:32:46):
with the Boston Red Sox on that three year, one
hundred and twenty million dollars deal. Reports are that at
least thirty million dollars of it are deferred. There are
opt outs after every season for Alex Bregman as he
is now a Boston Red Sox person, a Boston Red Sock, yes,
(01:33:09):
whatever you want to call it. Chandler Rome joined our
good friends on the morning show, The Shawn Salisbury Show,
earlier today. Chandler who first broke the news. By the way,
congratulations to him. Why the heck did this take so long?
That's my computer, Chandler. Why did it take so long
of you to give us an answer? I think a
(01:33:29):
couple of things.
Speaker 30 (01:33:30):
I think obviously, the market didn't manifest like we or
Bregman thought it would. You know, in November, I think
everyone you know, we looked at two deals as kind
of baseline deals for him. It was the Matt Chatman
deal with San Francisco, and then when Willie Adamas got
his deal from also from San Francisco. You know, Adamas
(01:33:52):
isn't a isn't a third baseman, but still he was
the second best infielder on the market, just longevity and
career wise. So you he looked at those two deals
and you knew that Bregman wanted to try to eclipse
both of those, and it became kind of clear that
that wasn't going to happen. And you know, when when
you have Scott Boris as your agent, you know, Scott
(01:34:14):
tries a lot of times to shatter or match records.
He tries to enhance, you know, one thing with his clients,
whether it's aav whether it's total money, whether it's years.
Speaker 5 (01:34:27):
I mean, I think it came down to, honestly, like.
Speaker 30 (01:34:30):
What did Bregman value, did he value the opt out
after the first year to get back on the free
agent market next year? Did he value you know, long
term sustainability, because if he stays with the Red Sox
for all three years, they're probably positioned as well as
anyone to really compete for these next three years, albeit
(01:34:52):
in a brutal, really difficult division. Was he focused on
the AAV solely because clearly the Red Sox blew everyone
out of the waterd wise, So I think it was
a combination of a lot of things. But why did
it take so long? I think because his market just
didn't play out like he presumed it would In.
Speaker 5 (01:35:12):
November, Well, it played out well enough for him to
get the one hundred and twenty million dollars. So of course,
this basically means, if you do the math, he has
to make three for thirty six to best the deal
put out by the Houston Astros. It would be three
three and fifty one to best the Tigers offer. And
(01:35:35):
as Chandler Room laid out there, Red Sox probably better
positioned to be contenders over the next several years than
the Tigers. And again, if he three years and he's
terrible like he performs like Jose Brahudez says one hundred
and twenty million dollars guarantee coming as O. Yeah, he's
betting on him. He's betting that he's going to beat
the other big long term deals is what he's doing.
(01:35:56):
This is still a gamble on his part, but it's
a gamble where even if you lose, you get one
hundred and twenty million dollars. Is not the worst gamble
in the history of time. Yep, all right, matt uh.
You also had last night overshadowed by this, the one
nineteen to one eleven win by your Houston Rockets green
screen from Brooks. Brooks a three pointer straight on, Yes,
(01:36:21):
smooth shot, come from the hands and over nine he's
got thirteen what twelve six rockets up by six transom
clock here, shot clock down to twelve, channel leftand ribble
screen set by Dylan oh dB straight away all the way.
Got it two huge threes in the final sixty seconds
here and it gives a rocket to one fifteen one
(01:36:44):
oh six league with sixty eight seconds remaining, Dylan Brooks
knocking four of his nine three point attempts down. He
had eighteen points. Tarry Easton with twenty five. He was
doing a great job getting into transition with his three
steals as well. Not a super efficient night from Jalen Green,
but Rockets did enough to win with Kevin Durant dropping
(01:37:05):
thirty seven points and nine assists. Did turn the ball
over seven times. With the Rockets get their second straight victory,
did not cover the nine and a half them. It's fine.
Nobody cares about that, except maybe a few folks in Vegas.
By the way, did you see the Vegas story. I
don't if you're gonna mention this or not. Vegas Casinos
did externally well in the Super Bowl, the money overwhelmingly
(01:37:27):
coming in on the Kansasity Chiefs to win that game. Yeah, uh,
you know, the Sharks like me were on the Eagles. Matt,
you are they call you mister sharp bah wait Ema Doking.
More on the Rockets coming up in about fifteen minutes. Yes,
that is correct. So we'll have more on the Rockets
coming up here, Matt. And there's your news and new
and we have the new Texans OC going to be
uh introduced to the media at one o'clock today. We'll
(01:37:48):
be carrying that here on the program. Wonderful, I believe
or not. You're just you know, we didn't at all.
We're we are literally, we're like a high end buffet.
We're like the boh in Las Vegas when they just
had what the bo buffet, the body oder buffet, No,
the Deo Rio Okay Rio Rio Hotel. Great buffet, is it?
Speaker 9 (01:38:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (01:38:12):
Rab legs too far off, strip barbecue, ribs, strip steak, pizza,
chicken wings, pudding, omelet bar. It's got everything. Oh wow,
We're we are like a high end buffet. We've given
you a little bit of everything. We got Bragman talk.
Today we have e may do can come it up
(01:38:34):
and Texans offensive coordinator talk.
Speaker 9 (01:38:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:38:37):
Nick Kayley Wright is the name, Nick Kayley Kayley.
Speaker 12 (01:38:39):
C A L E y.
Speaker 5 (01:38:40):
I believe it's how you pronounce it or spell it? Yes,
all right, Nick klet two. Nickky C's on the on
the team and also a Patriots. They are both John
Carroll ties as well.
Speaker 24 (01:38:49):
Grant.
Speaker 5 (01:38:49):
I didn't realize they were. It was such a football
factory up there. That's coming up.
Speaker 16 (01:38:52):
He made.
Speaker 5 (01:38:53):
Okay, in fifteen minutes, you may join us next. Do
you want to see Alex Braigman's jersey ultimately retired by
the Astros seven one three two one two five seven
ninety seven one three two one two five seven nine zero.
Speaker 10 (01:39:11):
The Man Tana Show with Ross continues so on Sports
Talk seven ninety I want all.
Speaker 5 (01:39:17):
Of you to get your clocks out, write the time down,
because you're gonna want to get the podcast of this show.
Today at twelve twenty one, on this chilly Thursday afternoon
in the city Houston, we are about to play the
very last for the very last time and Alex pegmant
(01:39:40):
update and we're gonna go back to yesteryear, I e.
Two months ago. Is this most two months you recorded
this because you have November end of November. This is
before you went on your worldwide tour. Yes, we present
to you this final Alex Bregman update. Uh Ross show.
(01:40:15):
The bit's never going away, much of the chagrine of
some well it is going this, This bit's going away.
This is what Ross had set up, locked and loaded
two months ago for the day just like today. Alex, Alex, Alex,
(01:40:38):
Alex F. Bregman. We really appreciate you as a representative
of the new era of Houston Astros Baseball where we
didn't have to watch Bull Porter bumble through double switches
(01:41:00):
where we didn't have to watch Brad Mills just call
everyone special when they were replacement level to where you
finally got some national recognition. You Carlos Correa, Dallas, Kyko Lns,
mcculler's junior, Jose Altuve, the foundation of the New Houston Astros.
We will always remember how you could hit forty home
(01:41:21):
runs when there was a juice ball at least. We
will always remember you're calling Trevor Bauer Tyler and being
brash and young and set in the edge and having
an attitude about the New Houston Astros and all the
great times you've given us and all the great plays
over there at the hot corner, Nanny, go ahead of
(01:41:44):
del thank you.
Speaker 8 (01:42:00):
But sometimes.
Speaker 31 (01:42:04):
Just sometimes it instead two time, all start, sometimes gold Glover,
sometimes Crawford box shots.
Speaker 5 (01:42:14):
Sure you couldn't hit home runs over four hundred feet,
but they still went out, and we appreciate you for that.
An all time Astro. Great well, welcome back, Welcome you
back for your orange jacket to be in the Astros
Hall of Fame. Go ahead, and as Marshawn Lynch would say,
get your chicken, and we appreciate you and won't be
rooting for you as you play for Boston Red Sox,
(01:42:39):
but we'll always love you and respect you and remember
the greatness of Alex F. Brigman. Get an emotional I
like that you slid in the Red Sox thing at
the very last second.
Speaker 6 (01:42:58):
That was nice.
Speaker 5 (01:42:58):
Great you left the little gap there in case the
team of joor. Yes, I did, and it was the
Red Sox. I believe that's a healing, gut feeling hit
for Adam Wisler.
Speaker 8 (01:43:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:43:10):
I think I was all over the place. I think
I said believe the Red Sox. Probably at some point
I did too. I think I named every team except
the Mariners. I think at some point. Yeah, twelve twenty
four Sports Talk seven and we need to pay off
something we mentioned. Somebody called asked about from Rivaldez. Yes,
I need to reserve the ability to change my mind
(01:43:32):
on this, of course, But my feeling is not even
I'm not really ready to put on the gut feeling list.
Is The feeling is that the Astros are not going
to be overly anxious to sign him to a long
term commitment. Speaking thirty minutes ago at spring training from
(01:43:52):
Rivaldez said, the Astros is according to chandeler Room, who
is there. From Rivaldez says, the Astros haven't approached him
or his agent A bounce an extension ROSSI you, you
and I've worked together for a long time. What's my
number one rule about guys going to their final year
for agency.
Speaker 16 (01:44:08):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (01:44:08):
If they don't get it done by spring training. By
the end of spring training, it ain't happening. Correct, see later.
You know what tut to cue the music? You should
just bring it back. You mean, like just a insert player. Yes,
it was just for Fromber, but I've kind of felt
(01:44:33):
that way for the last couple of years. Yes, me too.
He's been I mean, I don't mean, I don't want
to dumb this down. But when he's been really good,
you can't wait to see him back on the mound.
But when he shows the first sign of things are
that are troubling. A strike call that doesn't get called
(01:44:55):
this way it's called a ball, a base hit, an
air behind behind him, a home run allowed. I don't
want to say it implodes quickly every time. That's not
fair to him, And I would say last year was
probably better than in year's past. But there's always that phrase,
never let him see a sweat. He's just the opposite.
(01:45:18):
I see him perspiring out of control when things don't
go as well, and I think when you're going to
put a lot of money behind somebody, especially a starting pitcher,
you need that guy to be you're inever one like
Verlander at times struggled the last couple of years, but
you never saw it on Verlander's face. Zach Greking a
(01:45:38):
home run and Zach GRANKI would attack the player like
it was a zero zero game. I've never gotten that
sense from Roy Ravaldez, and I think there are some
concerns about him stending him giving him super big money.
When you do that, expectations grow, and that maybe his
maturity hasn't grown to the level of a guy that
(01:45:59):
you want to pay obscene amount to be a top
flight eight number one starter on your rotation. Okay, I'm
ready for the farewell whenever we want to record it.
I mean, we gotta get out, we gotta get the coach. Yeah,
we'll get to twelve fifty. You want to have a
farewell to from I'm ready. You're really ready. Absolutely, you'd
be the first person marketplace to do this, So we
got to jump the gun. We gotta get ready. He gone, okay,
(01:46:19):
he gone twelve fifty way. Say goodbye to farmer Velds.
Right now we say hello, you may dokay. He'll join
us next year at twelve twenty eight on Sports Talk
seven ninety Lunchtimers.
Speaker 10 (01:46:29):
Lunch Timers, It's the Matt Thomas Show with Ross on
Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (01:46:38):
Twelve thirty two. Matt Thomas Show with Ross continues on
Sports Talk seven Hinty. We are happy to be joined
as we are weekly by the head basketball coach were
Houston Rockets. Tonight, the Rockets take on the Golden State Warriors.
Winning last night against the Phoenix Suns. Coach at Doka
with us with Matt and Ross. Coach, congratulations a nice
win last night and for the second straight game, a
really good fourth quarter offensive. I don't know if you
(01:47:00):
would say that you spent a lot of time focusing
on just the fourth but it is kind of nice
to see that you've won two games where you put
up some big numbers in the final twelve minutes of play.
Speaker 9 (01:47:10):
Yeah, it was good to see those shots go down.
Speaker 12 (01:47:12):
Obviously, made a bunch of threes in those last two
games in the fourth quarter, but also guarded well as well.
Speaker 9 (01:47:18):
You know, nineteen points.
Speaker 12 (01:47:19):
Given up to Phoenix last night and eighty seven overall
in the game before and so yeah, not only offensive
league defensive were doing good as well there. But you know,
sometimes as simple as continue to be confident in the
shots and they go down the fourth and extend the lead.
Speaker 5 (01:47:36):
One thing that you were able to do. Look, Durant
had a fantastic game, as you expected he would. You
did take advantage, you turned They forced ten steals, I
think eighteen turnovers. Got twenty five points off of that.
That's just one of those unsung numbers that you can
always look at and say, there's a main reason why
a team wins a losers by just taking care of
good care of the basketball.
Speaker 12 (01:47:56):
Yeah, we've been one of the teams that is one
of the best in the league to taking care of
the ball. So when we keep our numbers down, obviously
we're in good shape. But to create that many on
them and get with the activity. Obviously we went after
Durant and four seven on him and six on Tyas Jones,
which is a guy that doesn't turn the ball over much.
Speaker 9 (01:48:11):
I think our activity was great.
Speaker 12 (01:48:14):
You know, get Tarri Beck, you get certain guys out there,
and they're obviously going to get their hands on the
ball a lot. And they came up with a lot
of steels, ignited our transition fast break and obviously got
some easy buckets.
Speaker 5 (01:48:24):
Speaking easy buckets, it was not easy to get out
be involved in the offense, at least in the first
two and a half. Three quarters got things going on
the fourth. Was there something you guys thought you could
do or something that they adjusted to that Alburn was
able to take advantage of to get him busy in
the fourth.
Speaker 12 (01:48:38):
Well, they went after him pretty much every time he
got in the post in the first half, and so
he kept as simple and made the right pass and
you know, sometimes make or miss as far as him
kicking out, but he's doing the right thing, attracting the attention.
And yeah, anytime he was in the post, they went
after him. And so regardless of who was on in
big or small, they sent two or three bodies to
him and limited him some in the first half, but
(01:48:59):
we moved around a little bit more, put him on
the perimeter a little bit more and at the elbow
where he could face up and see all the double
teams and everything, and it's obviously harder to double him
from that position. And he got going downhill a little
bit there, got the free throw line and made some
good shots. But yeah, they simply were not going to
let him score in the post and went after him,
and Alpi did the right thing, kicked it out and
(01:49:19):
other guys were recipients.
Speaker 5 (01:49:21):
Thirty eight minutes from him last night. How is he
feeling and do you expect him to play the back
to back?
Speaker 9 (01:49:27):
Yeah, he came out feeling good.
Speaker 12 (01:49:29):
Nothing happened during the game, so the tightness and the
spasms that he had previously, hopefully that's even better tonight.
Speaker 9 (01:49:35):
But he felt good, you know.
Speaker 12 (01:49:37):
Obviously going into a break here, we want to finish
on a good note and hopefully guys are all available.
Obviously Taria in the back to backs. We'll see about
Steven with the back to back as well. His minutes
were pretty low, but nothing happened with Alpi and hopefully
he's good.
Speaker 9 (01:49:50):
To go and can rest up and then go play
an All Star game.
Speaker 5 (01:49:52):
Yeah, when it is the last game before the All
Star break, do you ever feel like as a coach
you see not necessarily just now, but in your history,
is there do you have to put kind of an
extra emphasis and say, hey, guys, let's focus and let's
get this one done before we hit the break.
Speaker 12 (01:50:07):
All the time, it seems like every year guys minds
are starting to think about the break, think about the
All Star Game, rising stars, whatever they have going on,
and you want to lock in and finish on a
good note. And so, yeah, I've been on both sides
that had some ten game winning streaks before they got
snapped to go into.
Speaker 9 (01:50:23):
All Star Break. And we talked about that last night. Phoenix,
they had played the night before at home and got
in four thirty in the morning. We wanted to jump
on them.
Speaker 12 (01:50:30):
Obviously, they put up a much better fight, and Durant
had a big card to do with that, but we
knew that was their last game as well, and so
if we knew if we could lock in, they might
bow out early as well.
Speaker 5 (01:50:40):
So the squad plays tonight and then we don't play
again until a week from Friday, when I back to
back with the Minnesota and then go to Utah. I'm
gonna throw scenario if I shorten the All Star Break
by two games, by two days and it gives you
two less back to backs. Would you take that or
do you think the week away from the sport's a
good thing for the guys.
Speaker 9 (01:50:59):
Well, based on how we are right now, I think
the rest is good.
Speaker 12 (01:51:02):
Obviously Fred being injured, and then the guys that can't
play the back to back Steven and I'm Tario right now,
but I'll be being banged up as well, and then
guys that haven't missed games like Jalen, you know, playing
through contusions and.
Speaker 9 (01:51:13):
Bumps and bruises.
Speaker 12 (01:51:14):
I think it's good to get everybody's legs back, get
physically refreshed, but also mentally take a step away as well.
Speaker 9 (01:51:20):
So we'll take the extra days needed.
Speaker 12 (01:51:22):
And then, like you said, they take it right back
from us with the back to back ESPN game late
night here against Minnesota, and they have to go all
the way to Utah, so we will be prepared for that.
But get the back to back schedule right now has
been crazy. I think that's for in a row for us.
Speaker 5 (01:51:37):
I did watch a little bit of the Warriors game
last night when I got back from our game. This
guy Quentin posted play a whole lot, but he's a
seven foot of why is there a seven footer playing
for the Golden State Warriors that I've never seen that
for them, at least since like Andrew Bolget played.
Speaker 12 (01:51:51):
Yeah, he ringe a different dynamic to them. He's a
pick and pop big, something different that they haven't had
in a while. I think Looney hasn't been playing as much,
but you know, they bring a small ball with Raymond
at the five some, and then Tracey Jackson Davis, who
was starting for them, isn't really in the rotation right now,
so he gives them a different look.
Speaker 9 (01:52:08):
Something that we haven't seen when we played him so far.
Speaker 12 (01:52:10):
He wasn't getting any time at that point, but yeah,
stretches of defense does some different things for them, so
they're going with a different look to try to shake
it up as well.
Speaker 5 (01:52:17):
How about Jimmy Butler, what have you seen so far
him wearing Golden State gear?
Speaker 9 (01:52:22):
No fitting in Well.
Speaker 12 (01:52:23):
I think he obviously brings the leadership toughness to that team,
but he's he's a little bit different with how he scores.
Doesn't don't need to play play call for him, but
he can impact the game in so many different ways
and very unselfish and so seems like he's fitting well
so far, has made the impact, and obviously until last night,
they had won a few in a row with him,
and so I'm sure he's happy to get back on
the court and we'll see what he looks like tonight
(01:52:45):
against US.
Speaker 5 (01:52:45):
We haven't talked about this, at least on this show.
What was it like coaching in Dallas on Saturday for
that game with all the Lucas stuff and the protests.
We were on the buses, obviously getting the arena in
its growing as we were getting there, But what was
it was a vibe any different for you? Just being
around the fans with all that. You know, there was
a lot of anks in that crowd, at least Orland.
(01:53:07):
There certainly has been since they've played that game.
Speaker 12 (01:53:10):
No, I think the outside was more crazy, obviously, the
protests and the people out there with the signs and.
Speaker 9 (01:53:15):
The whole crowd gathered out there.
Speaker 12 (01:53:17):
Once you got inside, I think Anthony Davis made them
forget a little bit about it immediately with the first
half that he had, and then the injury happens, and
so it's kind of exacerbated that Luke's gone again and
then Davis is hurt.
Speaker 9 (01:53:28):
So I think There's been some ups and downs for sure.
Speaker 12 (01:53:32):
Davis, if he was healthy and playing, might have helped
sway their opinions a little bit. But him being out
for the extended time is only going to make them
miss Luca Moore. And so it was a wild outside,
but inside they were pumped up for him. Davis had
a great first half and like I said, we clowed
back into the game and he got hurt obviously, so
that dampened their expectations a little bit.
Speaker 5 (01:53:52):
You had last night thirty six year old Kevin Durant
playing as well as he is, and then you have
thirty five year old Jimmy Butler, thirty six year olds
Jeff Curry lebron Is forty doing his thing. What have
you just seen in your time around the league? How
much of this is these guys are freaks of nature?
How much of this is the sports science improving and
guys taking more care of their bodies to where you
(01:54:15):
have these guys into their late thirties playing as well
as they are.
Speaker 12 (01:54:19):
Yes, combination of all the above, I think, you know,
taking care of your body is become paramount.
Speaker 9 (01:54:25):
You know, for these guys.
Speaker 12 (01:54:26):
They're also great players, so their skill set lasts a
little longer, and they're very efficient at what they do.
So it's a little bit of both. But you know,
I need being around Durant and some of these guys
over the years. You see the work ethic. You see
how guys take care of their bodies and the amount
of time they put into their sport. And so I
think guys are starting to do that at a younger
age as well, which helps them extend their career.
Speaker 9 (01:54:49):
But the other part is guys will sit out some games.
Speaker 12 (01:54:51):
And I played the back to backs three and fourtnights
and so those things help as well in longevity of
your career.
Speaker 5 (01:54:57):
How old were you when you retired?
Speaker 9 (01:55:00):
Thirty four?
Speaker 12 (01:55:01):
Quitter thirty four got a coaching opportunity physically could have
kept playing.
Speaker 9 (01:55:06):
Pop off from me the job, and I took it.
Speaker 5 (01:55:08):
So did you how And you've been asked this before,
When did you know that you had the coaching bug
in you?
Speaker 9 (01:55:16):
Probably around twenty nine, you know, the middle of my career.
Speaker 12 (01:55:19):
I started AAU team in Portland and did some coaching
clinton with the MVPA, the Player Association put them on.
Speaker 9 (01:55:25):
I did that three years in a row out of
UVA with the.
Speaker 12 (01:55:27):
Top one hundred high school kids, and so I knew
I enjoyed it, and I knew I wanted to do
NBA and one of college or any other level. And
so once I got the call from Pop and the opportunity,
I stopped playing a little, you know, a year or
two before I had.
Speaker 5 (01:55:40):
To What the hardest part about an assistant coach is?
That is the scouting?
Speaker 15 (01:55:46):
Is it?
Speaker 5 (01:55:46):
The endless watching of tape? Is I mean when you
have to work your rank way up and you certainly
have done that with all the different stops you made,
what's the what was the toughest chore and ultimately getting
to the spot where you are now, I.
Speaker 12 (01:55:58):
Think just opportunity that you know, the thing that I
was told with all the interviews was you've never done
it before. Well, you can't do it until you do it.
And so that's the hardest part, you know, is everybody
has to be the first time.
Speaker 9 (01:56:09):
It's something. Obviously, the hours are much longer than when
you're a player.
Speaker 12 (01:56:12):
You know, you spend countless hours before and after practice,
all night doing scouting in films. But you know, I
learned from one of the best, and I'd say the
thing for me was having to be good cops for
Pop when he's a bad cop, And even though I
may have agreed with him on things, I'd be good cop,
put my arm around guys and kind of lie a
little bit.
Speaker 6 (01:56:30):
You know, I love it.
Speaker 8 (01:56:33):
You have to lie.
Speaker 5 (01:56:33):
I love it. That's what I'm saying. The best coaches
some times have to lie. So are you good cop?
Bad cop?
Speaker 16 (01:56:39):
Right now?
Speaker 6 (01:56:39):
Are you?
Speaker 5 (01:56:39):
Kind of as a head coach had to be kind
of a mix of that right now?
Speaker 12 (01:56:44):
Sixty six percent bad percent good? But I got a
staff and some bedroom players that make up for my aggression.
Speaker 5 (01:56:51):
Yeah, you know I wouldn't change it. Let me get
you out of here. On this one. Dylan Brooks is
having a great year. Three point wise up to thirty
nine percent. That's his best number. The ball leaves his
hand that looks like a much better this year than
it even did last year and certainly was a Memphis grizzly.
You tribute it to anything?
Speaker 23 (01:57:07):
Is it?
Speaker 5 (01:57:08):
Spacing? Is the slidestep? Is a little bit of everything?
Because it looks like it just looks like it's leaving
his hand with much more confidence.
Speaker 9 (01:57:15):
Yeah, I think his preparation is much better. He's always down,
ready to shoot.
Speaker 12 (01:57:20):
Guys are looking for him, and he does a really
good job of relocating and finding that opening for the
kickouts or post ups with autiing.
Speaker 9 (01:57:27):
So one thing he has done obviously shot at a
high level. I think he's ready to shoot every time,
and I think he's improved his the pace.
Speaker 12 (01:57:35):
Of his release as well, so he's getting a shot
off quicker doesn't need as much space. And obviously it's
been one of our best, most consistent all years. So
we want him to stay confident and aggressively take those
shots and I pass them up.
Speaker 5 (01:57:46):
Gray stuff is always coach. You see later tonight. Thank
you for the visitors.
Speaker 9 (01:57:49):
Always, thank you guys.
Speaker 5 (01:57:51):
You got it Emai Okay, whether it's here On the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross, Nick Cayley is the Texans
new offensive coordinator. You'll hear from him in just fifteen
minutes on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 10 (01:58:02):
Mattin Ross sweet turned turned on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (01:58:06):
All right, this feels a little premature, but this is
ross idea, and I think he's gonna want to being
a hit on this. So let's give the man his flowers.
We present to you. He's going away, I mean cross.
Speaker 6 (01:58:23):
Oh, Robber, you sweet sweet.
Speaker 5 (01:58:30):
Left handed pitcher. The grassa they called you, and we'll
never forget you as a Houston Astro. Great as you
came up, and we called it Framber alerts because you
would walk everyone and blow up when you came out
on the mound. But you right this ship and the
(01:58:53):
blow up stopped to an extent. And we'll always remember
how you finished top five in the cy Young couple
of times, how you would just randomly show up with
hair extensions whenever you wanted. Sometimes you'd give up three
home runs at an inning and you would get this weird,
sinister smile on your face, like your Heath Ledger playing
(01:59:16):
the joker, go ahead of Del.
Speaker 13 (01:59:20):
So thank you.
Speaker 5 (01:59:24):
Wish nothing but the best.
Speaker 31 (01:59:38):
Sometimes sometimes it instead, Yes it does a del.
Speaker 5 (01:59:52):
You'd be out there sweating profusely, counting to ten and
taking deep breaths. Defensive butcher jobs, but a wicked curveball
and ground ball outs.
Speaker 31 (02:00:04):
It was the time ofse.
Speaker 5 (02:00:08):
We were born.
Speaker 10 (02:00:10):
Then.
Speaker 5 (02:00:12):
We wish you the best, We love you, we appreciate you.
We're sorry that the Astros offer wasn't competitive. We're sorry
that Dana Brown strung along the media, and we're wishing
you all the best with team in the future. Thank
you from Bert gone but not forgotten, wishing you the
best in your future endeavors.
Speaker 16 (02:00:35):
It is no.
Speaker 5 (02:00:38):
There is none other radio show in the marketplace that
the day after a player leaves, we predict another player
is going to leave less than three hundred and sixty
five days from that player leaving, Come on, he's gone.
If there was a percentage meter about and you can't
(02:01:01):
eat percentage either it'say, yes or no, what happens or
doesn't happen. But if you were to put a percentage
on chances of Fromberval these days the astros, I'd put
out about ten percent. I was going five. Was the
first thing that came to my mind. Now, Cy Young,
m hm, twenty wins, not winner, I mean what I finished? Second,
what you know?
Speaker 8 (02:01:22):
Now?
Speaker 5 (02:01:23):
This is the truth International players, especially those uh South
not South America, uh uh not hispan when not in
a Hispanic country. Wasn't my trying to the Latin the
Latin teams. Latin players typically will take deals a little more,
(02:01:47):
uh a little quicker than say other other white players
for that matter, or black players that matter. I don't
the Latin American players take deals a lot more than
other players do. Okay, it's it's not a stereotype, but
I mean think about it. Think about the who the
astros have have secured up and locked up for years
on multip occasions. Twice josel two a Christian Xavier, Jordon Albarez. Yeah,
(02:02:15):
I think there is this. There is a certain bit
of Carl Carls Grandd saying yeah, no, I'm not saying anything.
I'm just saying that that the the track record has
shown that Latin American players will sign longer guaranteed contracts
because they don't want to get into the negotiation wars
as other players will do. Maybe because they feel like
they're you know, they're lucky to be there. It's been good.
(02:02:36):
But again they everybody's individually different. Yeah, I would say
it's up to the individual. But there is a little
bit of a track record of again Jose twice, Javier,
who else was somebody that signed a mm hmm, Jordan,
somebody else had signed a pretty decent extension. John Singleton did.
There would be one Singleton one Singleton did. Yes, at
(02:03:02):
Domingez did not know he bet on himself, bet on himself,
and I believe he's serving coffees at a local. I mean,
I don't know, I would imagine that. I mean Frommer's
clearly not taking any sort of deals, but he also
said he hadn't been approached for an extension.
Speaker 9 (02:03:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:03:15):
Yeah, he's gonna hit free agency. He's hitting free agency,
and I think he's gonna go as long as he
has some sort of successful I mean, here's the thing.
He's as a lefty, He's going to get the benefit
of doubt. Good left handed starting pitching is hard to
find in baseball. It just is, and teams will typically
overpay for that. And he is great, He's eighth level
when he's at his best. Yeah, but when is it
(02:03:37):
his worst, he makes you really nervous. But still you
add it all up. He had a great season last year. Yeah, oh,
even with the big blow up against the Angels. Yeah.
I mean again, he will have suitors. That isn't the issue.
It's going to be at what level does he want
to get comfortable with and does he really really want
to truly test a for agent waters And it's not
even him doing it's his agent doing it. And ultimately
(02:03:58):
he will be the one that will say yes or no,
I will take be offering.
Speaker 15 (02:04:00):
Now.
Speaker 5 (02:04:00):
Cy Young finishes the last three years five, nine and seven,
two time All Star.
Speaker 16 (02:04:05):
I like it.
Speaker 5 (02:04:06):
It's pretty good. Pretty good again, if you want to
stay here, I'm all for it. And and there and
there will be a value that we placed on a
left hand starting pitcher was as successful it's just been.
Let's go to James and Cyprus at twelve fifty four
on seven on a Hello James.
Speaker 27 (02:04:22):
Hi, guys, I hope you're having a good day.
Speaker 9 (02:04:24):
I just had a quick question.
Speaker 27 (02:04:26):
Uh, do the Astros get any type of compensatory pick
or something like that when they because they're losing Bregman
even though it's free agency, Yes.
Speaker 5 (02:04:35):
It's I believe it's after the fourth round they get
a pick.
Speaker 27 (02:04:39):
Okay, so they just gained one extra pick after the
fourth So that's like that. It's different than other rules.
It's just it happens when any team loses a free
agent or is it a quality free if you if.
Speaker 5 (02:04:49):
You if you offer them a qualifying offer, which the
number changes and goes up. So was the qualifying offer
was one year, twenty million or whatever it was? He declines,
and then once he declines, you get the draft pick
compensation of anybody who signs him, and the Red Sox
have to give up a pick as well.
Speaker 27 (02:05:06):
Yeah, okay, so we get we'll gain like two picks
out of that deal, right, I think it one, just
one by one, Okay, okay, I understand, Okay, thanks for
clearing that up.
Speaker 9 (02:05:15):
I appreciate you guys.
Speaker 5 (02:05:16):
Yeah, appreciate it. Yeah again, And and it never never
you never go oh well, we lost the players. We
got a draft pick. I mean that draft pick may
be good, but it's going to be probably five years
down the road before even though that that traffic is
gonna be any good. All right, New Texans oc uh
Nick Kaylee's going to speak in about five minutes from now,
real quick. I have a pull question up. Would you
be okay with getting rid of Valentine's Day? Have you
(02:05:38):
seen the numbers on this?
Speaker 9 (02:05:39):
What is it?
Speaker 5 (02:05:40):
Ninety ten not bad? Eighty eight percent is a good idea?
Twelve percent sent bad idea? Okay, a lot of lonely
people out there. Now, there's Gallentine's Day, which is gaining steam, yes,
and then there's side Pieces Day, the day after Valentine's
What that was the day before the day after it
could be either. I think it's either one. It's just
(02:06:00):
not it's not on the phone. You couldn't have a
side piece day in the day before Valentine's you have
to kind of do the day after one. Maybe depends
on our work schedule. M I don't think. I don't think.
If you got a side piece, are you really were
at the work schedule? You were, But the nine to
five aren't you? Aren't you? If you're the side piece,
you're available at your at your Becken call, or at
least you know. I don't know, Matt. That's for you
(02:06:21):
to explain it. I don't tell me. I'm just saying
that I have some friends that have side pieces, and
it's usually the day after Valentine's Day. Okay, I didn't know.
I didn't know what the protocol is because I'm not
in that game, Matt, Nor am I straight and arrow?
Speaker 7 (02:06:33):
All right?
Speaker 5 (02:06:34):
Hey, let's hear from Nick Keley next after I tell

Launchtimers. This is the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 5 (02:07:31):
Nick Kayley is the new Texans offensive coordinator. We hear
from him now as we go over to NRG.
Speaker 8 (02:07:38):
Thank you all for being in today. It's exciting time
for us, as you all know.
Speaker 32 (02:07:44):
You know we made a move at the offensive coordinator spot,
and you know I went through a long process, thorough process.
Speaker 8 (02:07:52):
I'm interviewing a lot of great candidates.
Speaker 32 (02:07:54):
College and pro candidates, and you know, I'm just I'm
thankful for the McNair's, Thankful for Nick Cassario and his help,
their involvement and supporting me through this process, and man,
I couldn't be more excited to welcome Nick Kaylen is
our new offensive coordinator.
Speaker 22 (02:08:11):
Right.
Speaker 8 (02:08:11):
He brings a wealth of knowledge.
Speaker 32 (02:08:13):
Smart coach, He's coached on the defensive side, offense, coach
multiple positions, work with a lot of different people, various schemes,
not just be holding to one scheme. He's very well
versed in off run game past game protection like he's
well versed in it all.
Speaker 8 (02:08:34):
So very smart coach, very energetic guy, great leader.
Speaker 32 (02:08:38):
Everybody I talked to about throughout this process had nothing
but awesome things to say about Nick and his approach,
the players that he's coached, Like, there's nothing but rave
reviews about Nick and how he's how he's helped guys
in their careers. So I'm excited to work with him.
I know I can't wait for our players to get
here and work with them. I know they'll feel his energy,
(02:09:00):
you feel his excitement and what he's able to bring
to our team. So with Dad, just want to welcome
Nick Daily is our new offense of coordinator.
Speaker 7 (02:09:09):
I appreciate it, Uh, the Miko, I just want to
you know, it's great to meet everybody.
Speaker 16 (02:09:13):
I'm I'm extremely thankful for the McNair family, for coach Ryans,
for Neck Cassaria, for the opportunity to be here in Houston.
You know, really looking forward to to get and going
and excited to you know, to visit with you guys
today if you can, if.
Speaker 17 (02:09:27):
You can introduce yourself when you're an answer question.
Speaker 33 (02:09:31):
Hi, Christy Reeking from the Associated for US. I guess
the two part question. First, how eager are you to
work with c J. Stroud And as a first time
offensive coordinator, how do you hope to put your personal
stamp on this offense?
Speaker 16 (02:09:42):
Yeah, Well, to answer your nice to meet you. To
answer your first question, you know, I'm very eager. I'm excited,
excited for the opportunity. You know, it's a great opportunity,
great people in this organization and you know, really looking
forward to to working obviously with with CJ. You know,
tremendous allent, uh competitor alt you talk about an ultimate competitor, tough, instinctive,
(02:10:05):
can make plays. So I'm I'm very excited and as
a you know, first time coordinator.
Speaker 8 (02:10:09):
To answer your.
Speaker 16 (02:10:10):
Second part of the question, really excited to get an
opportunity to involve this scheme and put you know, it's
not gonna be my spin. It's gonna be what's best
for our players. And it's always gonna be what's best
for our players. No, we're not pounding a square peg
into a round hole. It's gonna be based on the
strains of our quarterback, the players, and the guys on
this team.
Speaker 7 (02:10:26):
So that's what it will always be, you know, designed around.
Speaker 15 (02:10:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (02:10:31):
Yeah, Uh, Nick, last year in the Texans had a
lot of protection issues, and you guys have elevated Cole
What can you do to protect strout uh and and
give me any kind of time that he needs.
Speaker 9 (02:10:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 16 (02:10:51):
I think it all starts up front obviously, and it's
it's really all eleven.
Speaker 7 (02:10:54):
I mean, we all got to be in sync.
Speaker 16 (02:10:56):
And I think protection starts obviously, Uh, with communication, with
trust and communication, cohesiveness up front and really having clear
you know, rules in the protection system. So we're gonna,
you know, we'll be going through that process obviously. I
got a you know, history with Cole uh dating back
to my time in New England when he was our
offensive line coach and I coached the tight end.
Speaker 7 (02:11:14):
So I have a really good working relationship and a
level of trust with Cooley.
Speaker 16 (02:11:16):
He's a very good football coach and I'm excited to
go through this process with him.
Speaker 7 (02:11:22):
Thank you. Listen from ktr C TV.
Speaker 22 (02:11:25):
Here's coaching philosophy.
Speaker 8 (02:11:26):
How would you describe it?
Speaker 22 (02:11:27):
And just follow up just kind of the influences of
the Bill Billich next to Sean mcvays and go back
to JCU preach escape.
Speaker 7 (02:11:34):
Yeah, nice to meet you.
Speaker 16 (02:11:37):
Starting off, I mean everything I'm gonna you know, preach
and we're gonna preach here is gonna be rooted in fundamentals.
I think you look at every good play, it has
good fundamentals. So we're gonna start from the ground up
building fundamentals and getting repetitions and time on task with that,
the things that I can take, you know, I have
the opportunity to obviously come most recently with Sean in
in La, have a tremendous amount.
Speaker 7 (02:11:57):
Of respect for him.
Speaker 16 (02:11:57):
Learned a ton of football, uh you know, from him,
as well as obviously Coach Belichick. With my time in
New England, you know, invaluable experiences for me. And they're
both rooted very similarly. Maybe different personalities and different ways
of doing things at times, but it's fundamentals, it's not
beating yourself, it's playing clean, it's controlling the line of scrimmage.
You know, that's the run game, that's the past protections,
(02:12:18):
et cetera. And it's being a cohesive unit that takes
care of the football. So I and those are going
to be the things that transcend any kind of scheme,
any specific play. You know, we're going to be fundamentally
based and rooted in that.
Speaker 5 (02:12:29):
Indeed, as nice to see that.
Speaker 34 (02:12:33):
A lot of people who work with you talked about
how you wait for the right opportunity. Why in particular
was this the right opportunity for you? And you know,
why do you feel like it goes right.
Speaker 16 (02:12:44):
Fit because of the people starting from ownership to coach
Ryan's to Nick, to the people to the players, to
the staff that we have here.
Speaker 7 (02:12:52):
You know, feel really convicted in that.
Speaker 16 (02:12:54):
And I think, you know, you got to get the
right people on the bus, and we have the right
people on the bus, and I'm really excited about that.
Speaker 35 (02:13:01):
You go to work question what kind of led you
and why did you feel like you guys have to
make a switch and really bothered him his previous duties.
Speaker 32 (02:13:10):
Talk to a lot of great people throughout this process,
and just it was clear as I kept going through it,
talking to people and going through my process, it was
very clear that Nick was the right.
Speaker 8 (02:13:24):
Guy for our for our team, just with his energy,
right his leadership ability.
Speaker 32 (02:13:30):
I think with him being able to understand the run game,
past game, with him being in multiple schemes, multiple schemes
that were successful, understanding.
Speaker 8 (02:13:40):
How to tailor the offense to the players that we have,
that led me.
Speaker 32 (02:13:45):
To Nick, and I feel really strong in my conviction
that he can lead us and get us over over
the hump. Right we've been, We've had a lot of
good success these first two years, and the reason for
doing this is I think there's another level that we
can go to. And so I said earlier, it's my
job to take this organization and new heights, and I
think hiring Nick will help us to get there.
Speaker 36 (02:14:08):
Demika and welcome to Town Coach rat King Davis for
Talk Talk key part question, can you talk about what
were you looking for? You know, you talk to a
lot of people, but when you started, what did you say, like,
this is what this person needs to be able to do.
Speaker 32 (02:14:22):
I went in with the open mindset, Kim, and I
just wanted. I learned a lot from a lot of
sharp coaches. I learned a lot just seeing how guys
put things together, how guys adjusted and adapted.
Speaker 8 (02:14:35):
To what they were from their schemes, what they were
able to do.
Speaker 32 (02:14:39):
So I went in with an open mind, but also
went in with the idea of the right person who
can lead us right in the right direction, get everybody
going in the same direction, can help our quarterback the most,
help us where we had our issues. Of course, with
our protection, we know we can clean that up. Just
(02:14:59):
all a well rounded football coach, right, and that's Nick.
Nick is coach multiple positions. He's coaching on the defensive side.
He understands how to attack schemes. He understands how to
put guys in the right position. I understand how to
adjust it to make sure it's its favorite to our
players and making sure they're able to accentuate their their strengths.
Speaker 8 (02:15:22):
And that's what it was about for me.
Speaker 36 (02:15:24):
If you can just describe yourself and your coaching style.
I know you talked about fundamentals, how would you how would.
Speaker 5 (02:15:29):
You describe yourself?
Speaker 16 (02:15:30):
Yeah, you know, passionate, high energy, you know, relationship driven,
you know, getting to know the players beyond just the
actual you know, performance on the field, getting to know
what makes them tick and really investing in them as
people to understand, uh, you know, how they operate and
how you can help them and and help them, you know,
reach and realize their potential. And I'm gonna invest and
(02:15:51):
I'm gonna work hard, and I'm gonna bring a great
energy in a great vibe every day and and uh.
Speaker 7 (02:15:56):
I run where I'm going on the field. I move
fast and I have I love this.
Speaker 23 (02:16:01):
You know.
Speaker 7 (02:16:03):
Oh great yourself?
Speaker 34 (02:16:07):
Okay, I have to.
Speaker 37 (02:16:09):
Oh, Brian Beverf from a Big Stars media, I have
a two part question for coaching. One for you, Nick, coach,
how apprehensive were you to hire another first year offensive
coordinator excuse me for first time play calling office coordinator?
Speaker 32 (02:16:24):
To me, there's always everybody has that first time. I
was the first time play calling, and there are a
lot of guys we have that first time. So I
wasn't beholding into or nervous about hiring someone who was
the first time, because it's about the person, and I
think you get the right person to do the job.
And I think I truly believe that Nick can do
that and it's play calling is also about who you
(02:16:45):
surround yourself with. And I think, you know, we have
a really strong staff offensively and defensively, surround ourselves with
the right people who can help when it comes to
calling it for the first time.
Speaker 37 (02:16:57):
And Nick, you're coming from a situation with the RAM
where you had two wide receivers and Cooper Cove and
peaking the cool of two players who nobody.
Speaker 35 (02:17:05):
Really you know, was on anybody's ridgard coming out of
college like that.
Speaker 5 (02:17:09):
You have that type of situation in this wide receiver room.
Speaker 35 (02:17:12):
How do you get the best out of players like
Xavier and John Mitch.
Speaker 16 (02:17:15):
Yeah, I think you you you know, put them in
positions to have success, to to you know, surround you know,
be in position to do what they do best.
Speaker 7 (02:17:22):
And I think the spring is also.
Speaker 16 (02:17:24):
An opportunity for us to you know, you experiment with
routes and you see what guys do, and you refine
certain skills, and I think everybody's got a little bit
different skill set. You try to maximize those guys and
put them in the best positions to have.
Speaker 7 (02:17:34):
Success to help the team. And that's what I'll try
to do here with this staff.
Speaker 16 (02:17:37):
We got a great staff, We've got great players that
are you know, gonna work hard, and we'll go attack
it here once we get the guys back.
Speaker 38 (02:17:44):
And Nick Oudam West or Sports Talk seven ninety you
spent eight years with coach Belichick, last two with coach McVeigh.
Could you pinpoint something you take from coach Belichick and
then take coach McVeigh.
Speaker 9 (02:17:55):
They're obviously very different.
Speaker 16 (02:17:57):
Yeah, well, there's a lot of things that I could
I could you know, point two in both of those situations.
But yeah, I think just going back in my time
in New England, you know, embracing your role, keeping your
head down, working working hard, and and really the more
you can do, uh, the more value you have. And
and just you know, there's no you know detail that's
that's you know, I would say too small. You you
(02:18:18):
turn over every rock. You try to find a way
to give yourself an edge as a as a as
a team, through your players, through coaching, et cetera. And Uh,
I would say thoroughness, attention to detail, accountability. That's what
really stands to mind with coach Belichick, you know, sean
same thing, just the the energy, the passion, the leadership.
Speaker 7 (02:18:37):
Obviously both men are incredible football coaches.
Speaker 16 (02:18:40):
But you talk about the way he goes about the
day in la, the way he moves away, he communicates,
the way he invests, the way he pours into players.
Speaker 7 (02:18:49):
Those are just a few.
Speaker 16 (02:18:50):
Things about both those coaches that I that I've you know,
obviously taken along the way.
Speaker 19 (02:18:55):
Right.
Speaker 39 (02:18:57):
Well, great Bailey from ABC here in Houston, understanding it
takes all the level with protection, yeap, specifically with the
offensive line. What are the foundations in your coaching history
that you'll lean on to get that group, to use
Tomiko's term, to the next level.
Speaker 16 (02:19:12):
Yeah, yeah, Well, with the offensive line, the quarterback, obviously
the halfback. You got to be able to see the
game through the same set of eyes, and you got
to be going in the same direction, and you got
to be tied together. And that's it starts with communication,
and it starts with protecting inside out and establishing the pocket,
the depth of the pocket, the width.
Speaker 7 (02:19:29):
Of the pocket.
Speaker 16 (02:19:30):
And that extends obviously in the you know, the tight
ends receivers when you're chipping and stuff like that, but
it does it really starts inside out and it starts
seeing it through the same lens.
Speaker 7 (02:19:39):
And we all got to be coordinated in that.
Speaker 39 (02:19:42):
Is there any coach who's influenced your views of the
offensive line?
Speaker 16 (02:19:46):
Sure, the experience that you have with that, Yeah, Dante's Garnekia.
You know, I was with Dave Deguliamo in twenty fifteen,
very good coach. Dante's Scarnecia, a long time New England coach,
influenced a lot of you know what i'bviously learned upfront
and the protection systems, and then you know, been a
part of other ways of doing it too. But yeah,
in terms of my you know, the formative stages, it
(02:20:07):
would be you know, my my early years in New
England obviously with those two.
Speaker 17 (02:20:13):
More with the Houston Chronicle here, Tomiko has spoken about
your ability to coach in different schemes, calling do different
areas just kind of in your first time college plays,
do you have an idea of where scheme wise are
really gonna be drawing on for building this offense and
kind of where you're going from?
Speaker 9 (02:20:29):
Sure?
Speaker 16 (02:20:29):
I think you know, yeah, you know, I you have things,
you have foundation foundations and pieces that you want to
you know, hang your hat on.
Speaker 5 (02:20:36):
Obviously.
Speaker 16 (02:20:36):
I think again it's all about the players, you knows.
You know, there's different years. Every year is different, So
we're gonna do around the strengths for players. But I
want to obviously first start off you establish in the
run game. You know what is that going to look like. Well,
it's gonna be based on again what we do best
and uh and we'll we'll pay the way with that
moving forward.
Speaker 15 (02:20:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 17 (02:20:55):
One more, just with the decision, with the decision to
retain Cole and promot him to the offensive line coach,
Just kind of what went into that decision and what's
your confidence level on him, you know, being a part
of last year's staff, kind of fixing some of the
decisions that we're going to get as.
Speaker 32 (02:21:14):
Our offensive line coach to lead that room, just having
one voice to lead it. Feel really strong about that.
Cole helped a lot of our young players when it
came to developing. He had a really great relationship with
a lot of guys, and guys think very highly of
Cole and what he's able to do. And I think
him having a prior relationship with Nick as well and
(02:21:35):
them being able to work together and them to get
hit the ground running instantly. Think that would also led
to my decision, and I know we'll be better for it.
Speaker 8 (02:21:46):
Andrew Locker, he's football and the locker room.
Speaker 5 (02:21:48):
I going for Demico and one for Nick Demko.
Speaker 14 (02:21:51):
What was it like?
Speaker 40 (02:21:52):
This is the second time you look for someone to
kind of oversee the offensive.
Speaker 9 (02:21:56):
Side of the ball.
Speaker 40 (02:21:57):
What was it like this time as compared to the
first time when you hadn't been a head coach yet?
Speaker 32 (02:22:03):
This time, this process, it was it's a little easier,
I think, knowing what I was, knowing what I was
looking for, and knowing what to look for after being
a head coach for two years now and seeing how
we operate here, and it was an easier, I guess
process for me. The first time around becoming a head coach,
it was very hectic, trying to get a new staff,
(02:22:25):
trying to put everything together. A lot more hectic this time,
just being able to take my time, not rush anything,
but to think through it, get the right guy, talk
to a lot a lot of different people.
Speaker 8 (02:22:37):
I had to get a lot of input in what
we were doing. So it felt much more comfortable this
time around.
Speaker 40 (02:22:41):
And Dick, you said, the scheme is gonna be a
player driven at a lot of talking points. When you
hire an offensive coordinator, are they gonna run them McVay scheme.
Speaker 8 (02:22:49):
Are they gonna go back to the Patriots?
Speaker 40 (02:22:51):
How would someone might be describe this scheme if we
were talking about it.
Speaker 16 (02:22:55):
It's gonna be Houston's. It's gonna be our scheme based
on what we're doing. And I don't say that to
to you know, throw any curveballs.
Speaker 7 (02:23:01):
It really is. I mean, my history dating back.
Speaker 16 (02:23:04):
To when I first got into the National Football League
under Coach Belichick is we were going to be a
game plan team. If that meant we were going to
run duo and gap schemes and run the ball forty
five times to win the game, then that's what we
were going to do. If we had to run more
perimeter plays, wide zone and we felt that was going
to give us the edge, we were going to do that.
It was all going to be based We're going to
ask our guys to do what they do well, but
it was going to be based on what we do
to you know, to help us win. And at the
(02:23:25):
end of the day, we want to win and that's
that's priority for us.
Speaker 40 (02:23:29):
All and watching last year and taking me in all
that information and approaching the offseason, is there anything that
you think or any area of improvement that you think
this offense needs to make to achieve those goals.
Speaker 16 (02:23:42):
I would say this, I'm really only focused on moving forward,
and you know each year is different. You know we're
going to hit the time, we're going to get into
free agency, draft, et cetera. You know, we'll see how
our team shapes up here in the next couple of months,
but we'll put our focus in that one day at
a time as we as we put together our roster.
Speaker 23 (02:24:01):
Joe Mixon in the back took running the football for
specific to Joe, what are some of the skills.
Speaker 5 (02:24:05):
Sets you see from Joe and kind of the mentality he.
Speaker 8 (02:24:09):
Has as you playing things.
Speaker 16 (02:24:11):
Yeah, I love his mentality. I love the way he runs,
I love the way he finishes. He's a violent runner
on contact. He's competitive. I've admired him for.
Speaker 5 (02:24:19):
A long long time.
Speaker 7 (02:24:20):
So I'm I'm really excited.
Speaker 31 (02:24:21):
Uh.
Speaker 16 (02:24:22):
He's a really good player and I'm uh, I'm really
excited to work with him.
Speaker 40 (02:24:26):
Position it was a spot that they made investment in
and they used the tight ends as much this past year.
Speaker 8 (02:24:33):
You have a bone background with Rocker on Kowski and
guys like that.
Speaker 41 (02:24:36):
What do you hope to do to get the most
out of the tenansition blocking and catching passes title.
Speaker 16 (02:24:41):
Yeah, I love tight ends. Obviously I'm a little bit
biased there, but I think we got a great group
of guys, smart, tough, competitive, and uh, you know, in
my history, we've used a bunch of different guys in
different roles and and uh, I like tight ends.
Speaker 8 (02:24:57):
He Nick Locan, Houston Chancer Johnson.
Speaker 5 (02:24:59):
Question for both of you guys, and you gonna start
with you, if there.
Speaker 41 (02:25:02):
Was one thing that you specifically puts you in the
anti process that you walk away really impressed with With Nick?
Speaker 9 (02:25:09):
What would that be?
Speaker 8 (02:25:11):
The one thing that stood out to me was just
his passion for the game of football.
Speaker 32 (02:25:16):
You I want players when I'm looking at players evaluating players,
I want players who love.
Speaker 8 (02:25:21):
The game of football instantly.
Speaker 32 (02:25:23):
When you talk to Nick and you guys see it
right here, He's passionate about football.
Speaker 8 (02:25:27):
And that's what's the one thing that stood out to me.
Speaker 34 (02:25:31):
Then for you think it's a situation, has a CS
your quarterback?
Speaker 7 (02:25:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 35 (02:25:35):
What is it about him and his talent that might
allow you to do some different things and be creative.
Speaker 9 (02:25:39):
In that aspect?
Speaker 7 (02:25:41):
Yeah, I mean he can, he can spend it.
Speaker 5 (02:25:43):
He throws the ball.
Speaker 16 (02:25:44):
Uh, he's an accurate thrower of the football. He has
a natural he's a natural thrower of the football. He's instinctive,
he's got the it factor and and uh, he's a
He's a warrior in terms of his competitiveness, and I
have I've admired him dating back to his college days.
So I'm really really excited to have an opportunity to
work with him.
Speaker 8 (02:26:05):
Nickicole Thompson, Texanswayer.
Speaker 17 (02:26:07):
Yeah, makes you talked about in the past waiting for
the right opportunity to come to Houston, but are.
Speaker 8 (02:26:14):
Going to become a play caller. But what sold you
on Houston in the right fit for you specifically?
Speaker 16 (02:26:19):
Yeah, again, the people, starting with coach ownership, coach Ryan's
to the people in this building, the coaching staff, Nick SiO.
There's a lot of really really good people and they're
aligned and that's what is really intriguing to me, was
really intriguing.
Speaker 7 (02:26:35):
And I'm I'm excited to get to work with everybody.
Speaker 3 (02:26:37):
Here.
Speaker 41 (02:26:39):
A more questions for Demigo, And the first for Demigo,
you know obviously phrase he is coming up and you
have some penning creatings, wondering about the potential of bringing
a guy back like Stefan Diggs and then for Nick West,
simple players do you look forward to builde your offense
or what.
Speaker 5 (02:26:56):
Type of traits do they have?
Speaker 35 (02:26:57):
So if I can start with Demiko first, we.
Speaker 32 (02:26:59):
Won't get into specifics on free agents, like that's a
process that will take his time, So I won't get
into specifics on different guys.
Speaker 5 (02:27:08):
Tray, you look for in particular players.
Speaker 16 (02:27:10):
Yeah, tough, unselfish, dependable guys that love to compete and
love football. That that's that will start there and obviously
extended the specific skill sets at different positions. But one
guys that love the game, that love to compete. Uh,
you know and and you know are good teammates.
Speaker 35 (02:27:28):
We all know that CJ has a tremendum untime squitch
for the mek has it's prevents my time. What specifically
about Nick and his ability to design play and call players,
do you feel that we'll be able to get the
best out of CG Because we all know what type
of talent and what type players you can be. What
specifically about his play calling and his design and his
team can help elevate Seed to that next tier of
(02:27:51):
quarterback playing.
Speaker 32 (02:27:52):
Yeah, we all know CJ is a really great quarterback, right,
So it's it's about developing that relationship with CJ and
also just put in CJ and everyone else around CJ
in the best position possible for us to move the
football down the field and score points. I think Nick's
gonna do a great job of that, building that rapport
relationship with CJ. And I think CJ is already, you know,
(02:28:15):
a great player is just getting everybody on the same page.
As we talked about that communication, all eleven guys being
on the same page.
Speaker 8 (02:28:23):
We do that and instantly CJ will be better.
Speaker 13 (02:28:28):
Maybe consider your relationship with Bobby out far.
Speaker 8 (02:28:31):
What power was it for you hirement?
Speaker 32 (02:28:34):
It was very hard to let Bobby go. Bobby's a
really close friend, as you all know. Bobby's a great
friend of mine. You know, when I got into coaching,
Bobby was the guy who helped me figure it all out.
And we were QC's together there in San France, so
really long relationship there with him. Nothing but love and
admiration for Bobby and what he's done. I know he'll
(02:28:55):
be a really good coach in this league as he
continues to press forward in his career.
Speaker 8 (02:29:00):
And I wish him nothing but the best was with
Christie Sam.
Speaker 33 (02:29:03):
Sorry, Thig, I wondered about your path into coaching.
Speaker 5 (02:29:07):
Did you always want to be a coach when.
Speaker 33 (02:29:09):
You're growing up and was there a certain coach or
person in your life that kind of beeared you towards
this profession.
Speaker 16 (02:29:15):
Yeah, I to answer your question, I grew up in Campton, Ohio,
three miles from the Pro Football Hall of Fame. High
school football was big fifteen twelve thousand, fifteen thousand, so
about the age of nine, I knew I wanted to
be a coach, and my dream early on was to
be a high school football coach in Star County, Ohio,
similar to Tom McDaniel's, you know, Ben.
Speaker 7 (02:29:33):
And Josh's father.
Speaker 16 (02:29:34):
I watched him at Camp McKinley as a kid growing up,
So I've always always wanted to coach. It's a part
of my you know, fabric of my life. And my
dad took me to a lot of games as a kid.
Speaker 7 (02:29:45):
So yeah, sorry, I've got two mutions for to mak up.
Speaker 17 (02:29:51):
Just Nick's talked a little bit about the excitement about
working was was he involved at all in kind of
the consultation of the type of Ocs and type involved
in that decision and begging the decision to bring Big here.
Speaker 8 (02:30:06):
I had to hire oc.
Speaker 17 (02:30:11):
Sell makes some recent public appearances. He seems like you
seen good spirits. Do you have any updates on how
he's doing in this recuracy?
Speaker 32 (02:30:18):
Thank is definitely in much better spirits, encouraged with this
process and where he is. So I'm excited for Tank's
great to see him just with that smile back on
his face. We know he went through a devastating injury
there hate to lose him, but he's on the right
track and we'll see where he ends up as he
continues to progress to his rehab.
Speaker 8 (02:30:37):
But it's great to see that smile back on Tank's face.
Speaker 5 (02:30:41):
Nigg, you talked about you know, d Viko, You've talked
about the players. Can you talk about your relationship with
me Casirio.
Speaker 9 (02:30:47):
Yeah, I got a lot of respect.
Speaker 16 (02:30:48):
I mean I came into the league in fifteen, I
was hired by New England and he was there in
New England and he's always been just a positive, sharp,
organized mentor to me. You know, always did a great
job leading and you know, have a high level of respect,
very thorough and he's just a big, good sounding board
as a young coach coming up to and you know
(02:31:09):
I have a lot of respect for Nick.
Speaker 5 (02:31:12):
Thank you very much, Nick Kayley quick thirty seconds on this.
Wee are super late. It's fine. Uh, highly cliches, Holly,
use of cliches. It's fine. You know you don't have
to win the presscott about football. Yeah, I loves football.
(02:31:32):
I think CJ. Shroud is good. He knows protection issues
were there, loves tight ends, loves tight ends. You heard
him say that that he said he's going to be versatile,
whether it be they need to run outside zone, they
need to run the gap scheme. Maddie, Yeah, do whatever,
you take a big gap scheme. Guy, I know you are.
And there were some dumb questions in the group too,
but that's not their fault.
Speaker 9 (02:31:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:31:53):
I was wondering though the names of his childhood dogs. Yeah,
we can get that. I'm so embarrassing his favorite cartoon
and syr Real.
Speaker 8 (02:32:00):
It's terrible, all right.
Speaker 5 (02:32:02):
One twenty five, let's come back. Joe a spot. I
spoke today about Alex Bregman's departure. We'll hear from him next.
We got to believe it or not. Coming up in
twenty five minutes here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 10 (02:32:12):
More Matt Thomas Show with Ross now Sports Talk seven
ninety Core.
Speaker 5 (02:32:18):
Do you put this on the list? Oh, stop Fiver. Yeah,
it's spectacular. I don't know if it was on my
list when I beat you in the Elton John Fantasy five.
We're supposed to fancy fire tomorrow, but with this Bregman news,
you want to push it back a week. Yeah, let's
do that, because that's it's got too much preparation too.
What were we even supposed to do?
Speaker 24 (02:32:38):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (02:32:38):
Saturday Night Live recurring characters. Okay, I mean we can
do it four hour show. You want to drive and
drive fry for sure. Reason Connor's upset if we push
it back. I don't know why. He's all, let's thank god?
Are you ought tomorrow?
Speaker 16 (02:32:52):
No?
Speaker 5 (02:32:53):
I'm here. I just you know, you do what do
you guys?
Speaker 6 (02:32:55):
Do what you want?
Speaker 35 (02:32:55):
No?
Speaker 16 (02:32:56):
You know what?
Speaker 5 (02:32:56):
We have to do it Valentine's Day? Something related? No,
because the US on Sunday. It's on Sunday. It's a
big it is a big fifty.
Speaker 9 (02:33:02):
Ok.
Speaker 5 (02:33:03):
We gotta do it tomorrow. Why don't we do love
songs that's so wide? What do you mean I mean
there's only nine million love songs. Mm hmm. I like
recurring characters better. Okay, all right, So we're gonna do
it after the show today. Can we do it? You
have you have doctor appartment, don't you? Yeah, I gotta go. Uh?
Can I call you? And why we should do it
(02:33:24):
in the morning. We're gonna give him less than three time?
Are we doing it? One thirty one, one twenty tomorrow?
If you want clips like I need any time? Yeah,
we'll give you three hours, all right, nine thirty two
help them? Nine thirty tomorrow, I'll make clips, okay, nine
thirty tomorrow. We're gonna before the show starts. We'll see
what time. Nine thirty nine, nine, nine fifty one. We're
(02:33:48):
gonna make the clips, so tomorrow, all right? Joe speaking
of clips, Joe spotus book today in Florida.
Speaker 27 (02:33:52):
Uh?
Speaker 6 (02:33:53):
Yes, he did.
Speaker 5 (02:33:54):
Joe espota in Paum West Palm Beach. Uh, Joe's spota.
Your thoughts on hearing about Alex Bregman's signing and have
you talked to him? Woke up to the news, So no,
I have not high chance to you know, text him,
nor call him nor that. Okay, Well, thanks to Joe
(02:34:14):
really appreciate that. Have you addressed it with the team.
Speaker 23 (02:34:20):
The team is still not all here yet, so we'll
we'll see when when the when, When the way the
right so the guys will get here.
Speaker 5 (02:34:26):
Okay, thank you Joe who cut these clips?
Speaker 24 (02:34:32):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (02:34:33):
I think Dan, but yeah, it's I mean this se
he's working with what we got, Okay, I mean yeah,
is it nice to have finally have some closure with
Alex Brevan.
Speaker 19 (02:34:40):
Happy for Alex.
Speaker 23 (02:34:41):
I know the news are not official yet, but I'm
happy for him.
Speaker 24 (02:34:47):
Uh.
Speaker 23 (02:34:47):
You know, he made his decisions, so now he's time
for all of us just to move forward.
Speaker 9 (02:34:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (02:34:52):
I go with him on that.
Speaker 5 (02:34:53):
Let's move forward. Turn the page, turn the page, as
Bob Seeker would.
Speaker 22 (02:34:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:34:59):
All right, h that's our secing right there because we
are a little bit behind because of the Nick Keeley gab.
We're gonna do right now, okay seven one three two
one two five seven ninety seven one three two one
two five seven nine zero Alex Bragman, should the Astros
retires Jersey never, We're gonna hold onto this conversation. What
(02:35:19):
for the next ten twelve years of Ross?
Speaker 6 (02:35:21):
What do you think?
Speaker 5 (02:35:21):
Just so I can randomly bring that up. Yes, well,
also we come back, We're gonna tell you about a
broadcaster who made a mistake on air, didn't own up
to it, and it just kept getting worse. Hm hm
you intrigued? Yes, One thirty four on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 10 (02:35:40):
Ninety Lunchtimers, Lunch Timers, It's a Matt Thomas Show show
with Ross on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (02:35:51):
Oh Man going to the Beatles. Now Bragman says goodbye.
We said hello to Christian Walker and Barritis, Cam Smith
well Man eventually we'll see eventually.
Speaker 9 (02:36:09):
Oh Man.
Speaker 5 (02:36:10):
Forest Whitley in for his tenth camp. When when Gordy
said that I was blown away by that, I shouldn't
have been, because we've been down there a bunch of
times and interviewed in the same year of the year.
What's it gonna take this time? He's always lost a game?
What was the suspension? Like, how's your arm? Are you
gonna be able to go? And you know what, a
lot of guys could have quit, but he hasn't quit.
(02:36:32):
He's I mean, he's not got any he's he got
his initial first round salary. It's you know, it's his
signing bonus. But he hasn't made a lot of money
since he has what a couple of days of service
time under his belt. I mean he's he's done okay
for himself, but he's not super rich. He could have
easily just taken that. I mean, he's the money that
he got by being a first round selection he's had
(02:36:55):
to spread over his entire professional career. He hasn't gotten
an extra contract, he hasn't out in a bonus. He hasn't.
I mean, he hasn't gone to arbitration, doesn't it.
Speaker 15 (02:37:02):
I mean.
Speaker 6 (02:37:04):
He could have quit.
Speaker 5 (02:37:05):
So I give him credit for that. And honestly, there's
a spot for him. There's a fifth or sixth inning
guy available in Disastros bullpen this year, so he's got
a shot at it. I believe Lance mccullors could be
in that position as well. Hmmm, Now we forgot to
ask Cordy about if he's talked to No, he's talked
to Lancer Colors tomorrow. Yes, how awkward will that be
(02:37:27):
between Gordy mccullors. I don't think mclos it's not that bad.
It's not over selling, which we were just in bad.
Joe Spotty did speak on Lance mccullor's and Luis Carcia.
Speaker 23 (02:37:36):
I think we just as an organization, we just feel
that's what's best for him before the team. So we
just want to make sure that we we get it
right and we get these guys, you know, when they're
when they're ready to go. We could keep him on
the mound.
Speaker 9 (02:37:49):
For for the long home.
Speaker 5 (02:37:51):
Yeah, taking it slow, Maddie, very very slow. If either
one of them show up this year, I'll be pleased.
I think if you're trying to think that either one
of those guys and I'll also throw JP France at
mix are gonna help in twenty six, I think you
are holding out a lot a lot of hope. I
(02:38:15):
wouldn't if I'm the Astros, and I don't think they're
doing this. If I were the Astros, I would not
be planning either one of those three guys making a
significant contribution to this team this year. You're probably gonna
need them too at some point, because you got what
fromber Hunter, Renewd Blanco, Arraghetty was Nesky. That's five? Then
where's your depth? Blue Ball? Yeah, the kid. They were
(02:38:37):
supposed to three pitchers going out year. They're supposed to
pitch On the last day of last year, before I
got rained down in the nine hour rain de Lake.
There was a kid that was the the against the
Guardian that were suposed to pitch. I forgot his name.
But no, there's there's reinforcements. They're not Ross, They're not
going into starting rotation with just five guys in you
that you are the five Oh, I know that, Matt.
I'm not saying that they are. But are they But
(02:38:57):
are they any good?
Speaker 9 (02:38:58):
I don't.
Speaker 5 (02:38:59):
I don't. I think we're have to figure that out
once we see them play in spring training and they
get their first call ups. But have you and did
you really ever hear of the Astros thinking about going
after a starting pitcher of this offseason. I didn't hear
much of that about you. Maybe that tells us well
number of things. They don't have money to spend. I mean,
they weren't seriously involved in the USA Kakuci sweepstakes, if
(02:39:20):
they want to call it that. They didn't really try
very hard to keep justin Verlander. I mean, you got
you know what you did, Ross, And we haven't really
talked much about this. You got rid of two fifths
of your starting rotation. Well, Verlander didn't pitch a whole
lot in the rotation, so you got rid of one
fifth and then you got rid of an extra guy.
Gordy reported to us that JP Frantz said after the
All Star break that you had Tommy John in the
(02:39:43):
middle of the year. That's gonna be a year probably
of the organization. Key's nowhere to be found. So maybe
Luis and Lance are going to be ready soon. You
kind of want them to be because, first of all,
the five guys you just brought up, not all five
are going to be great. One of the five, this
(02:40:04):
is reality, are gonna get hurt at some point. That's
what starting pitchers do. I will just say this and
we'll get a better grasp of it when we get
down to flour next week. There's two names that we
don't even know about right now that we'll be talking
about in the middle.
Speaker 8 (02:40:20):
Of the year.
Speaker 5 (02:40:20):
Yeah, but how good are they if we haven't even
heard about it? We didn't. We didn't mention Spencer Ragetty's
name in any spring training. No, we did not. Last year. Yeah,
we interviewed him in spring training. Absolute was that part
of the opening rotation? No, but he was talking about
as a contributor for the year. Absolutely, but there's gonna
be two guys that we're going we get down there, well,
they'll introduce ourselves. I am if the Astros ain't scared
(02:40:41):
about it, I'm not scared about it. I'm just telling
you that something in the organization said we don't care
or not as concerned as everybody else seems to be
because last year we had so many, the Astros had
so many, and then they ran out because they got
guys got hurt. If there's things to worry about, to me,
the number one thing ROSSI to me to worry about.
It's more the hell you can get hitting on the outfield. Yes,
(02:41:04):
that's what is to me. The seven eight nine scares
the life out of me. For the Astros, Okay, it
does too, It should for anybody. But I doesn't mean
that we're totally said we're all good, so we're all
good at starting pitching. No, I didn't say that.
Speaker 8 (02:41:17):
I'm not.
Speaker 5 (02:41:17):
But I'm not fretting over starting pitching right now, because
clearly the Astros aren't fretting about it. There's got to
be there's got to be two names that will find
out in the next ten days. Like, oh, okay, you
guys are high on them. That's cool. We'll find out. Gusto,
that's who it was supposed to be. It was supposed
to pitch, all right. That was again the last game
of the year. Now that doesn't mean anything, but I
mean that's a name, Gusto blue Ball exactly. I mean, yeah,
(02:41:40):
it's not great. But were the Astros in on any
names at this point? I don't think so, because they
were trying to shed payroll. They're trying to standard the
tax again because they don't want to spend money. So
we'll see. I think they're lacking in starting pitching depth
unless we're unless we're banking on Luis Carci and lancewa
Colors Junior, then I can't. I just told you I
can't do that. So maybe I should be more concerned
(02:42:02):
than I am.
Speaker 6 (02:42:04):
I'm not saying.
Speaker 5 (02:42:04):
I'm not saying I'm not concerned. I'm just not gonna
worry about it right now. Starting pitching no problems. Matt Thomas, Nope,
and I quote, I believe I just said, five twenty
game winners in one rotation, the Baltimore Oriols the the
earliest seven. Kwaar is shaking in his boots. Jim Palmer's like, what.
Speaker 9 (02:42:22):
You gonna do?
Speaker 16 (02:42:22):
What again?
Speaker 5 (02:42:23):
No, I am Pat Dobson McNally, d Dave McNally, his
cousin Pat real quick, Oh man, we are we are
super late. Oh okay, Oh I got a corral rabbit story.
I start, I got totally fast. Do we come back?
