Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's ask my friend rig guett Is, who's on the
line with us now from San Antonio, Rita.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
I don't know. I don't want to give you an answer.
I have an answer for you.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
But when you played and your teammates played, I fell
in love with college basketball with Fiasama Jamas. So as
I know, the ending didn't go away that you wanted to.
I'll never forget those times. That's when I fell in
love with college basketball. You had the greatest time of
your life as a young adult. So while the new
memories that are being made hopefully tonight, will be everlasting
(00:29):
for us, I'm not going to forget about the great
times of the eighties.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
I don't think you and your teammates will either.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
You know, it's interesting, mad because I've had a lot
of people say, oh, does this, you know, does this
erase the loss?
Speaker 4 (00:39):
And does this?
Speaker 3 (00:40):
And the answer is no, this has got nothing to
do with it. You know, man, last night in the stands,
you know, my family, we were talking to Otis bird
Song and the teams he played on and Sweet Lou Dunbar,
and then a team comes in and this is about
you know, one thing I agree about with it, which
caller just said, I mean, this is this is undoubtedly
(01:02):
the golden age of Houston basketball, and.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
What Kelvin has done over the last you.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
Know, he's talking about a storybook ending in eleven years,
but the last seven years have been you know, everyone
goes around on the word unprecedented a lot. It's been unprecedented.
The number of Sweet sixteens, you know, consecutive Sweet sixteens,
and the fact this is our second Final four, you know,
in a handful of years. It's absolutely remarkable. And what
(01:30):
Kelvin has done has done an exceedingly great job at
is making all of us feel like we're part of
this program. So I guarantee it, if you ask Sweet Lou,
or you asked Otis, or you ask anybody, we feel
a part of this team and this program and these kids.
And these kids will be remembered after that game Saturday,
(01:52):
These kids will be remembered by U of H fans
forty five years from now. Your son's going to have
a radio show, you know, and Juwan Roberts is going
to be talking, you know, about this team in this run,
in that game, and it's just I've never seen anything
like that game Saturday. I just kept looking at my
wife and son, going, I don't even know what I
(02:14):
just saw.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
Yeah, I can't play it back.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
I can't play it back.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
In my mind and put it together.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Yeah, I'll be brutally honest with you.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
I was in San Francisco with a bunch of Rockets
people who said, hey, let's go, let's go watch the
game together, and they could tell when they what was
what was duke'siggous LEA fourteen I had some of it,
just kind.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Of fourteen with nine minutes to go, and nine with
six minutes to go, and yeah with thirty. I mean,
it was just unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
And I don't know if it was that the Cougars
walk up or Duke didn't practice a normal inbounds play.
There are strange things about practice as readA you've been
a part of it as a coach, as an instructor,
as a player, that the mundane things that you go
through and practice it, you're like, why are we doing
this over and over again? I felt like there were.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Some things attention to detail that Kelvin put into.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Play with his kids through out the course of the
year that a lot of schools, and I'll frankly put
Duke in the mix weren't prepared for on Saturday night.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yeah, let me tell you something. It was the greatest
X and O game plan by Duke maybe I've ever
seen in a college basketball game. They absolutely eliminated every
strength we had. There was not one single on the
ball screen where they put their ball handler in a
pressure situation where they were getting blitzed and double teamed.
And not one single time did they throw the ball
(03:36):
to the post with his back to the basket. Those
are the two things that we are the absolute best at.
They did not do it a single time. Where they
got caught was guess what we haven't done maybe all year,
is full court press. There's no way for them to
have talked about it. There's no way for them to
have prepared about it. And man did they tucker when
(03:57):
they couldn't get that ball in bounds, you know, John Lee,
it was just it was awesome. And you know, we
were in the car yesterday, my wife and son and
I talking about how happy we were for Jojo. That
the lasting memory, you know, wasn't the fact that he
got over excited and slapped the ball out of the
inbounder's hands. Then he turns around and blocks the shot
(04:19):
and gets the put back dunk, and it's just it's
just unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
I forgot to bring that up. When do you ever
see a technical foul assess like that? I mean, first
of all, it was the right call. I'm not begrudging
the call. But strange things in front of forty thousand people,
eat a big dome stadiums make you do crazy things.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
You know. It's funny.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
I haven't seen that call in probably twenty years. But
when I was, you know, Coach Lewis had me in
a position where I was the designated inbounder. I always
stuck the ball out over the line to give the
guy a chance to slap it out of my hands
while you're watching the play develop, you know, pump fake
or stick it out there and see if you're getting
to react and flap it. And Joejoe is just such
(05:03):
a bundle of electricity, you know. I just I was
so happy that that wasn't that wasn't his takeaway memory?
All right?
Speaker 1 (05:14):
When did you get to the game and do how
much do you have the Florida games you see in person?
Were you there for both games or just to come
for the second one.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
Oh yeah, no, we saw all of it.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
And I mentioned this to franf for Schemlos with US
a little bit ago. That's a Florida basketball team. And
I haven't to watch a lot of them because I
don't really focus on anything except my couter when it
comes to college troops.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
But I did see him in the tournament.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Their final ten minutes of games, and I'm talking about
three and four games. As tournament, they become a different
basketball team. I don't know if they implode.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Like Duke did two nights ago.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
So maybe you don't want to let it be in
a situation where you fall behind by that, because that's
a squad that can put up ten street points at
about a two minute stretch.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
Well, they were unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
And you know, look, Cooper Flag was undoubtedly player of
the year, and the Jeni Broome kids from Auburn was
right there. But but if Walter Clayton Junior wasn't like
like fractions of a vote behind those guys, he is unbelievable.
And then Aberdeen they're they're shooting guard and Martin. Here's
(06:14):
the deal I'll say about this this team. Duke made
me incredibly nervous because of our inability to match up
well with a team that attacks from the high post.
This game strength on strength and at yes, they have
you know, four seven footers, but those guys aren't difference makers.
The Hauk kid is really good, that comes off the bench.
(06:38):
But this is about perimeter on perimeter, and I'll put
our perimeter defenders up against anybody in the country. I
can't the kid at A and M Anderson junior Way
Taylor wad only guard. Only guard in the last ten years,
I've seen that almost beat us. He got forty one
against this Other than that, I can't remember remember of
(07:00):
us us getting beat by a perimeter oriented team.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Well, so I don't want to wait this long.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
Yeah, I don't want to wait this long until until
seeing Manual Sharp hit those jumpers. I need a quick
start for Uzanne. I need Sharp to find this shot.
And again, it just felt like, and I could see
it in Kelvin's face.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
It was like, I'm not coaching. Who is this team
I'm coaching out there?
Speaker 1 (07:23):
Because the first eight minutes looked like they completely were
shell shocked with the entire experience.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Well, well, I don't know about that as much as
it highlights the importance of what Milos Juzan has developed into.
He picked up the style trouble and we played how
many minutes at least twelve minutes, maybe fourteen minutes in
the first half without Milos, and then he comes in
the second half. And I was concerning a lot of
(07:50):
times kids sit that long and they don't come out
and meant and play, And he came out on fire.
So I don't know, you know who knows. It's an
incredible and let me just tell them. In all my
years around you, of h I have never ever seen
anything approach the fans and the excitement, the number of fans,
(08:13):
the pure joy, it's almost indescribable. What was going on
in the stands during that game?
Speaker 1 (08:23):
Well, friend, I don't know where I'm sitting, but if
I find you a'll buy you some fried food.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Are you okay with that?
Speaker 3 (08:28):
I'm good with that. Hey, listen, let me tell you
one quick story. My sweet wife just came out dressed
for the game. She has on her bag.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
A polka dotted handkerchief. How great is that? You know?
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Me tell you something.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
I know you've been married a long time, but y'all
are still freaks, and I think that's so hot that
you guys are having that kind of romanticism in your life,
this late in your life.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Oh my gosh, I just you know, nothing she could
have done. I teared up, and she goes, oh my gosh,
are you emotional? I says, yes, I am. So that's
the greatest thing I've ever seen. Taken a poka dotted
handkerchief into a national champ ship game is pretty great.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Well, I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad that
miss is here, your kids are here. And like I said,
I don't know if I'll see you. There's only about twenty.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Five thousand of us in the building tonight, so I
don't know where we're going. Eybody's gonna be.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
But uh, well, set today we hugged all. We hugged
all twenty thousand, so I'm sure we'll find you.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Okay, thank you friend for all your time coming on,
and I look forward to finding you somehow someway tonight.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
Okay, brother's talk to you later.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Talk to you later. That's read get us Friend of
the show.
