Speaker 1 (00:00):
Right now.
Speaker 2 (00:00):
We are very happy to have a Houstonian on the
program that is going to be fighting this week in Edmonton, Canada.
Derek Lewis from the UFC is joining us here on
the Matt Thomas Show. Derek, it is up, Matt and Ross.
It is really great to have you with us. Why
did you choose Edmonton or why did anybody chose Edmonton?
You're gonna are gonna freeze your ass off up there
or what?
Speaker 1 (00:22):
Yes, my balls with cold out here right now. I
don't know why. There's the place they say I needed
to be. I told them that they not even allow
me in the country because you know, so I knew
a whole back background check through the FBI try to
get over here. I'm like, man, I'm trying to do
all these loops, just trying to come to Edmonton. But
(00:45):
you know, it's a good, good country, you know, good
good city. You know. I don't say nothing bad about it.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
No peace, No, we wouldn't make it. We wouldn't want
you to do that. But man, it's good to hear
your voice. We're so happy to representing the city of
Houston and UFC and you got this fight. This is
fight number thirty for you, and I would like to
try to pronounce the guy you're going against, but I
don't want to butcher his name.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
How about that?
Speaker 3 (01:06):
I think, how about that?
Speaker 1 (01:07):
That's good?
Speaker 3 (01:07):
That was gonna be close enough there, gonna get close
in the.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Name on that man. Y'all just reminded me, is I
couldn't pronounce it.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
You don't even care what his name is. You just
want to knock him out, right, He's gonna yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
If there ain't no call being a time, something easier
I could pronounce. I'm not about to try to see
that and try to pronounce the name.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Why don't you go after a guy named Greg, like
Greg Smith? That'd be a lot easier next time, dere
I'm gonna tell you that for sure. This this is
your thirtieth fight. How much different are you in terms
of preparation, the mechanics, the art of the sport then
you were in, say your first or your fifth fight.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
I think I'm doing pretty good. You know, I'm finally
starting to do tour days. I never really did that, man,
at the beginning of my career and mid all my career.
Now I'm doing tour days. So I think the tour
days that have really been helping.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
That can help you with the kind of in the
later rounds as well.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
Yes, and also it's not five rounds, so I'm happy
about that. So I'm very excited about three round fight.
I can really try to finish them in the first
round now and be happy back at last at least
another round.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
And we appreciate you always representing Houston. You're still coming
out to tops drop.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
Yep, that's good. That was that.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
No, you're not gonna mix it up with any like
twenty five Lighters or south Side or anything like that.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
No, they not rated for that, you know they Okay, okay,
who do you like in the Texans Jets game tomorrow night?
Of course the Texans, even though we're not even a favorite.
That's crazy.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
I know, two point dollars.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
That's crazy. It's crazy.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
By the way, your UFC Fight Night's going to be
on ESPN Plus for those that want to catch you,
I know they will because look, there's no nothing going
on on Saturday. The World Series will be over with football,
all the good college games. But then we're going to
catch you on on ESPN Plus. Let me ask you this.
You have not fought since May how do you space
out your schedule, So if people that were to follow
you on a regular basis know when you were going
(03:09):
to get back into the octagon.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
I wanted to fight a lot sooner than that, but
they just think couldn't find out a word their opponent
for me, so I had to wait wait until the
end of the year. We were supposed to be guaranteed
three fights a year, so it really can hold up
the end of the bargain. So I'm only going to
(03:32):
have two fights this year, so hopefully next year we're
gonna get three fights. Hey waiting it's alone and in
between fights.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Though, and the recovery time after each individual one, I mean,
I guess it depends on how long you go, but
how long do you feel it no matter if you're
you know, obviously won a lot more than you've lost,
But I mean, how long does it take you to
kind of recuperate after going in in a match?
Speaker 1 (03:54):
A fight? Probably like two weeks, two weeks you probably
like to sleep and probably sleep for like two days
after the fight, no matter how it goes, because it's
so much a drilling and nerves and everything goes into
my match. So that right there, literally it wears you out,
(04:14):
and also it depends on what type of injury you
have physically years old, two weeks.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Yeah, so most knockouts in UFC history with fifteen, you're
you're thirty nine years old. You just want to keep
keep on fighting until they tell you no more. What
do you feel like the rest of your career is
going to pan out?
Speaker 1 (04:34):
Like hopefully it panned out pretty good, But it all
depends on my body, my mind, and my family. And
no family say that they know women they're doing it
no more, then I'm not gonna do it anymore. But
we're just making it small investments right now, just so
I can still live the lifestyle that I live right now.
(04:56):
And so that's all we're working on right now. And
just to write a Ustens all right.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
So you've had fifteen knockouts? Final question? Uh is there
a common theme except please leave me alone?
Speaker 3 (05:09):
I mean give me, give me you?
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Do you have you thrown one punch and you heard
the cry or a scream or something it was like, damn,
I can't believe I did that to that man.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
Yeah, it's actually it's like it's like whenever you look
at your opponent and you make a certain type of face,
and I hear so many hunted visuals a lot of opponents,
like when they roll in their eyes and stuff like that.
It's like, I'm definitely gonna need some type of therapy
after whenever's all saying them, Wow, I'm have PTSD for real.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
We don't want you to have that, so you got
to stay up right, so it makes sure that then
become an issue. Hey, we wish you the very best, Derek.
Thank you for coming on, Thanks for representing Houston. Good
luck this Saturday, and stay warm, I guess in Edmonton
and we'll look forward to seeing you on ESPN played.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
US this weekend. Yes, thank you for having me.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
All right, Derek, take care of yourself. Derek Lewis represent
the City Houston.
