Speaker 1 (00:02):
Saulisbury, oh byby Houston.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Okay, let's do this. Shawn Salisbury, The USC Truth, longtime friend,
Shawn Salisbury.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Brian Lima, Go Lobos. This is the Seawan Salisbury Show.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Eight oh two.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Here in Houston, Texas. Welcome into the Shawn Salisbury Shaw
on Sports Talk seven einty Shawn Salisbury, Brian li Lima,
Manuel Elmore. Now we're gonna welcome in NFL and college
football analysts. The best to do it. Kirk Kirkstreet, no doubt.
He also does NFL on Prime on Thursdays. You know,
College game Day. Man, we're getting old. He's been doing
this like fifty years now, College and the primetime game

(00:44):
with this guy Chris Fowler, who does a phenomenal job
as well. Kirk Kirkstreet joins us, Kirk Happy, thanks gave
good to have you on brother mission. I know you'll
get a chance to get the same with you, brother,
and uh, it's always good to have you in. This
Thanksgiving will be void of your best friend. And I'm
going to start there because we talk a lot of
football over the years, brother, and we dive in and
have a great time. But I was emotional for you.

(01:07):
I owned three dogs and love them or they own
me is the way I should put it. And that
friendship and I don't want to tie into your emotion,
but I don't know if you ever get over that. Brother,
How are you doing? How's your family holding up? And
thank you for bringing Ben into our lives. Man, it
mattered to me, and I know it mattered to a
whole bunch of people across the country.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Yeah, I appreciate it. Yeah, it was obviously a tough
few weeks there. You know, I've had dogs since going
back to as long as I can remember, really, but
I've had Golden Retrievers, which for me are such a
special breed because of the relationship that you have with them.
But I've had Adam since I was probably fifteen, and

(01:49):
you know, I've had to put unfortunately dogs down over
the years and it's always a tough thing to do.
But man, I don't know, you know, you never really
can predict emotions. But yep, it was just it was
just a relationship. I think it was maybe the time
of my life. You know, four sons and three of
them had moved on to college, and you know, he

(02:10):
he was just with me everywhere. You know, I took him,
you know, I started to take him on the road
with me, and he's with me at home. I mean,
I'm a guy. I don't know how you are with
your dogs. I mean I take my dogs for a
walk by myself probably five six times a week, you know.
And so anyway, it's just a really really special bond.
And it was it was just really hard to like no,
And when I when I led to that the feature

(02:34):
that they had done that I had, I had the
track I was, I was totally fine. I mean, threw
it to me and I couldn't breathe, you know. And
and like I said, when you grieve, whether it's a
family member or a friend or in this case, my
you know, my dog, what I've learned, what I was

(02:55):
reminded of is it kind of comes in waves. You know,
one second you're totally fine and talking like we are
right now, and then the next second, bang, it just
hits you like a ton of bricks. And you know,
unfortunately for me that it was on national TV when
when I had one of those moments. But I think
a lot of people can relate, and you know, I've
heard from so many people. What was interesting about Ben

(03:17):
is he knocked down every wall, you know, in this
era of especially in the middle of the election and
politics and the race and religion and just so much
to divide the country, he was one thing that just
seemed to be one hundred percent united, you know, and
I think a lot of I mean, you cannot even

(03:38):
imagine the people that I heard from and forgetting forgetting
football and forgetting sports. I had Texas twice this year
for college game Day, once in ann Arbor, another time
when when Georgia played him in Austin, and Governor Abbott,
you know, he was kind of like, hey, good to
see you, but where's bend on anything? And he saw

(04:04):
him and hugged him. And then when we were in
Austin for the major showdown with Georgia, the governor from
Georgia was there and both their wives were on the
field and they were just all over Ben. It was
the most fascinating thing. Matthew McConaughey, Joe Rogan, I mean,
it was the most fascinating thing that people were just
drawn to him. I think it was maybe a spirit,

(04:25):
and yeah, I think that's why at the end when
you had to let go, it was it was tough yeah, and.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
You don't have. First off, you brought him into our lives.
We almost felt like we knew. I'm like, okay, there's Kirk. Thanks,
we see you for the last fifty years. I want
to see that dog. And and as I joke, and
you don't ever have to apologize for that scene on
the set because that that that told that this was
not scripted and that you are I mean, it was
done right and the feature was phenomenal. It gave us

(04:52):
all joked up. And if you want to understand, if
people get it, I got three dogs, like I said,
And to understand, when you've taken him on the road,
do you realize I haven't. Since I've had the three dogs,
I have not taking a taking a plane ride vacation
since they go. I travel across the country in vehicle.
I honor. That's the honest about truth. They all three go,
and I will not get because I don't want to

(05:12):
leave him behind because I don't trust anybody to take
care of the way I do and and the way
I just won't do it. So that's that's why. And
I can't fathom right now having three kids and then
this I really got six. I can't fathom not having them,
so thank you for bringing me in A Yeah, I

(05:32):
got a about a two year old rescue. I got
a hundred pound bully that's going to be four in December.
And then I got a five year old that's a
mix of a of a Maltese and Shitsu, so it's
a combination. One hundred pound bully is is just a
big baby, but tough as a one hundred hundred yearldleather
when he needs to be. So he's a good protector.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
But we appreciate tip.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
I'll tell you who is my the rescue is a
it's a guard. It's the mix of and it's a
bunch of them, but it is it's like a herd dog,
a dog. And he'll heard my one hundred pound bully.
She when I say he she has to be out
in front. She herds it. It's like and she's like
a hunting dog. She makes this different noise with her nose,

(06:20):
like like she's a pig sniff that's doing sniffing everything
out and I'm telling you it's and she's got black
lab mixed in. So yeah, and the one hundred pound bully,
who's the only male in the group, sits back and says, okay,
I'll let you have this one for now, so and
cleans it up. So we get it, man, and we
appreciate you sharing being with us, and we're looking forward
to seeing more Peter as well. All Right, college game Day,

(06:42):
and I'm gonna get into your football analysis, but college
game Day, tell me how different it is? I mean,
and the dynamic now with the you know, Nick is
so good you I mean, you guys are doing and
you know, having McAfee on. But as we start to
see you know, Lee Corso's role and who I love,
then I know you do too, because nobody takes care
of him, and I loved how he took care of

(07:03):
you during that time I've been on that feature. The
different dynamic of college game Day, how's it feel now?

Speaker 2 (07:12):
I'm personally having the time in my life. I mean,
you know, studio television probably better than most because of
all your experience in doing it. And I have told
you this about three years ago when I started to
do Amazon Thursday Night. Obviously it's a lot, you know,
the prep, the execution on air. I've learned to manage that.

(07:33):
But what's just unpredictable is you know right now, I'm
prepping for Raiders Chiefs on Friday, Black Friday this week
and basically from Sunday through Saturday night at midnight, I'm
in full on ten out of ten prep mode. And
three years ago, I thought, Man, I don't know, I

(07:54):
really want to try to keep managing all three of these.
I don't know which one I would take out if
I didn't what I take away day when I take
away the Saturday night game, and I just love calling
the games with Falor on Saturday. And now we have
the SEC, we get all these great games and do
all the postseason and the playoffs and all that. I
didn't want to take that away, and I don't obviously
I just started an Amazon. I didn't want to take

(08:15):
that away. So I thought, if I have to take
something away as much as I don't want to, maybe
I have to consider taking away college game Day. And
then and then Pat started to come on the show
a few years ago, and then it was such a
game changer for me because I really enjoy his energy,
not just on the air, but really more importantly for
me personally off the air. What he's done for me,

(08:38):
the relationship, the friendship that I have with him was
a game changer. And so when that came on, that
energy came on game day, I was like, man, I
could never lead game Day. And then Coach Saban came
around this year to go along with all that, and
it's just it's a changing of a guard. You know.
We had Chris Fallor and Lee Corso myself forever, and

(09:00):
Chris left, and then Reef came on, does a great job,
and Desmond obviously has been there for a long time.
Just the dynamic and in the chemistry which is so
important in studio shows, has changed quite a bit. But man,
Coach Saban, you would not believe how he acts and meetings,
how he acts every time he and I do a
weekly kind of like a film session thing. And when

(09:22):
we get done, every time he's he's undefeated and asking
me this every time we get done, you know, all
high five, and it's he he's like a rookie, you know,
He'll and he turns to me and he's like, was
that okay? Was you know? Did you did you? Did
we do okay? There? And I was and I'm like yeah, man, yeah, yeah,
yeah yeah. So here's the greatest coach of all time.
Wants to be coached, wants to know what's good, wants

(09:45):
to know what is he doing where it can be better,
and he genuinely feels.

Speaker 1 (09:49):
That way is the greatest coach of all time. Right,
He's still he's still learning, right, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
Yeah, He's not like, hey, guys, I'm Nick Saban. Everybody,
get out of the way. I'm the smartest guy in
the world. Like, just get out of the way and
listen to me. He's the total opposite of that. He listens.
If you have a point analytically to make, he embraces it.
He's been fascinating. I've known him forever, so I think

(10:16):
there's a kind of a build in chemistry with he
and I and I think just everybody on the set.
I think he feels comfortable. I think he feels at ease,
and I think it's really bringing out a side of
him than a lot of people prior to this who
didn't know him. They just saw him in front of
the podium with a coke on his podium and you know,
his hands going and yelling like Bill does Belichick it

(10:39):
you know, used to do on the Cincinnati and you're
seeing a different side of him. I think a lot
of people have been just blown away by coach Saban
and seeing the human side in him, and man, it's
the show's never been hotter, it's never been better. And
the twelve team playoffs, the debate and tonight the rankings

(10:59):
come out. I mean, it's as much as is going
wrong off the field and the offseason with this sport
and in the fall from September to the bowl games,
there's a lot to enjoy. And I think this twelve
team playoff, I don't know how you feel about it,
but it really has opened up cool so much more
access and so many more teams and so many more

(11:19):
matchups all the way to this weekend. You know. I
mean teams like Arizona State, they would never even be
thought of the forever and now here they are on
the brink. They got Arizona and if they win and
in the Big twelve Championship, and Kenny Dillingham, as young
as he is, has got a team that maybe gets
a buy into the playoff, I mean, who knows. I

(11:39):
mean that's what's cool about this. So yeah, we're having
a great time and I'm enjoying this twelve team playoff
and all the debate that goes along with.

Speaker 1 (11:47):
It, absolutely, Kirk kurb Street, you know, in College Game Day,
in the primetime game on College Football with Chris Faller,
also Amazon Prime with al Michael's doing NFL and doing
it all and doing it well and grateful to have
him on and share his time with us, Kirk. Is
there any great team in college football? I mean, if
I say can eight teams win it? Do you really
believe that? Or is there four? Is there two? Is

(12:09):
there a great team in college football?

Speaker 2 (12:12):
Usually, as you know, and usually it's like, well, yeah,
Alabama or Georgia, right, I mean, and it's like them
and everybody else. I mean, I think Oregon's a great team.
We'll find out next week when they Ohio State and
Oregon play in Indianapolis. They already played once out in Eugene,
which is a massive advantage in Austin Stadium. So in

(12:33):
a neutral site if anything, probably will favor Ohio State
as far as the crowd, I think those two teams
feel like there may be the best two. But if
Texas plays their best game, could they play with those two?
I think they can. If Georgia puts it all together
and Carson Beck plays the way he did a couple

(12:53):
of weeks ago when he just kind of was clicking
and looking like, Okay, that's the guy that we expected
to play this year. Boy there. You know, Kirby's got
a good team that's capable. So I don't know if
there's that one team that really separates themselves. I think
we've got to. I think we've got maybe three or

(13:15):
four when they play their best. And that's the problem.
We haven't seen Texas play their best every week. We
haven't seen Georgia play their best every week, you know,
And so I would give I guess Oregon Ohio State
the nod, But I think I wouldn't be shocked if
somebody started clicking and playing up to their ability consistently,

(13:35):
can go right in there and play with them and
beat them.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
Does Indiana deserve if they finish this up with one loss?
Would you put a three loss SEC team in regardless
of who you think is the best? Or does Indiana
deserve to be in?

Speaker 2 (13:52):
I think a couple of things. All the chaos of
last weekend, the winners in that I said career will
find out tonight when the rankings come out. I think Clemson,
who's almost forgotten right in South and South Carolina, who
does have three losses. But if you're if you're going
to start dipping into the potential of a three loss team.

(14:13):
South Carolina has been playing as well as anybody in
the country the last four or five weeks. And they
get Clemson this weekend. It's a noon game. Eastern Whoever
wins that game, I think is going to get into
the playoffs as in a large pick. I don't think
that takes Indiana out. I think Indiana was a beneficiary

(14:35):
with Ole Miss losing and Alabama losing. I think if
those two teams won, it would have been a real,
real debate about Indiana's one big game they play. You know,
they had seventy yard I'm standing on the field. Game
day was in Columbus, YEP. And I to fly to
Norman to call the Alabama Oklahoma game. Well, you know,
we were like, you know, let's stay for the first

(14:57):
half and let's watch this Indiana team from the field.
They get the ball, We're standing right there watching them.
They go seventy yards. Their quarterback look like a stud.
He's a big guy. I was. I watched that opening drive.
They go seventy yards and they put a touchdown on
the board. I said, hey, the debate is over. I
don't want to hear they may win this game, they
may lose this game. They are a playoff team. That

(15:17):
was the opening drive. Sean yep, that was seventy. That
was seventy yards in that opening drive. They had one
hundred and fifty three the rest of the game, and
they had I don't know how many in that garbage
drive near the end. So seventy on the opening drive
you get eighty three the rest of the game. So

(15:39):
after that, I was like, ye, they should be in
there not and then Ole Miths loses in Alabama loses.
I don't think Indiana. Maybe Purdue. They're eleven and one,
and with those other teams losing, I really don't think
there's much of a debate because I don't know how
many teams are left right for the at large spots.
So I think Indiana, I think they're a lock if

(16:01):
they beat Purdue and finish eleven in one.

Speaker 1 (16:04):
All right, let me switch the NFL for a second,
and I'm gonna get back to college in a second. A
couple more minutes with Kirk kurb Street here on Sports
Talk seven ninety Sean Salisbury show here in Houston. Little
regression for this team. They're seven and five. I know
you cover all the NFL CJ. You know, the hits
and the cumulative effective hits and penalties and all that
have taken their toll. Of all the teams you've seen

(16:25):
this year, where do the Texans fit in.

Speaker 2 (16:29):
I had them just a few weeks ago in New
York against the Jets in a game that I thought,
you know, the Jets aren't having a great year obviously,
and even with Houston banged up, I thought they would
be okay in a short week and I was wrong,
you know. I mean, that's the NFL. That's that's what
it's about. And I think from that point on up
until that game, you could say, Wow, they need to

(16:51):
play better against the better teams on their schedule. You
know what's going on. They lose to Minnesota think early
in the year they lost to the Packers on the road,
but it's still I mean, they with the Miko and
the way they played defense, and do you know they
eventually they get healthy, CJ is going to get it going.
But when they lost to New York and then that
led to another loss, a close loss against Detroit. I

(17:16):
just thought, you know, it's it's again. This is a
team that at any moment can right this ship. They
beat Dallas and then last week another reminder that that's
why it's the NFL, and they play the games. I
mean Tennessee. You almost feel like they've kind of canceled
the season and are already looking forward to the draft,
and they end up pulling off a big upset. So

(17:37):
I wouldn't I know, it's easy for me. I'm not
living in Houston and I'm not a diehard fan. I
think they got to obviously get healthy. You wonder how
much CJ is such a guy that keeps it tight lip.
I don't know how much he's talked publicly. I know
when I saw him in New York, I was standing
on the field with him pregame, I gotta have you
holding up and he's like, man, I'm beat up. I

(17:58):
don't want to talk about it. So he's not going
to ever make excuses. But they just they got to
get however they can. They got to find a way
to get the pieces around him going. I haven't heard
the latest with the health of the receivers. Boy Joe
Mixon has been incredible surprise, you know, coming over from
Cincinnati to take some of the heat off of him.

(18:22):
If they can just get healthy, I still think that
they are. Probably they're going to win their division. It's
really going to come down to how healthy they can get.
And never underestimate Dmiico Ryans and a Demiico Ryan's coach team.
So you win your division, you get healthy, and you

(18:42):
try to get back on track and play up to
the potential that they have.

Speaker 1 (18:45):
Hey, real quick before last two questions, real quick, how
do you if you're talking to coaches or you're sitting
in a meeting room and you've got a Pro Bowl
player but has sixteen you know, penalties and twelve or
so a pre snap? Is that a lie like tunsl
who's a hell of a player when the ball snapped?
But how often do you have to deal with and
how how do you fix a guy who's got that

(19:07):
many illegal procedure panalies? What do you say you sit
him down? How do you handle the undisciplined part of
a football team or the lack of focus which has
been a problem for him and this team this year.

Speaker 2 (19:20):
Man, that's because he's such a veteran I think if
there's a guy that can handle that, you would think, uh,
you know, Damiico ryans to me even before he went
to Houston, of all the guys I sit around and
talk with and you get one on one time with
these coordinators, always was blown away by him and his energy.

(19:43):
I don't I wouldn't look at him as a guy
because you wouldn't you categorize him as a players coach? Oh?

Speaker 1 (19:49):
Absolutely, absolutely, in absolutely yeah.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
And I think if there's anybody that can put his
arm around a guy and and talk to him about
the little things are hurting us and we got to
get this thing right, I'd like to bet on him
saying he's a guy that can do that. And these players,
it's almost like when their relationship with the Mika Ryan
is they don't want to let him down, you know,

(20:16):
like some coaches you fear right and it's like, oh
my god, you know, I'm terrified of this guy. Other
guys they coach in a way where it's like letting
your dad down or I don't know, a good friend down.
I feel like that's who he is. That's how much
respect they have for him. So you know, the lack
of discipline is a major, major thing. You got to

(20:39):
get that part of it fixed or no matter how
many exos and things do you want to talk about,
if you're beating yourself, it's it's hard to beat the opponent.
So that's something they're going to have to clean up.
And I'm you know how much pride they have in
themselves and how much they care. Ultimately you'll find out.
And you know, in the next next three or four
week if.

Speaker 1 (21:00):
The Heisman Trophy is voted on today, who wins it?
Travis Hunter's college football, right.

Speaker 2 (21:08):
Yeah, And I think what he's doing we've never seen.
I mean we've seen obviously Charles Woodson, who ended up
winning the Heisman. He was a corner who occasionally played receiver,
maybe two or three snaps. You know, he'd returned punts.
That's what probably won him the Heisman against Ohio State.
This kid plays almost every snap and he's and he's

(21:30):
he's the best receiver on the field, and he's the
best corner on the field. And he's not gonna have numbers.
It's going to make you go, oh my god. Look,
you almost have to watch him weekend and week out
to appreciate what he does and how many snaps he plays,
but I think that's an anomaly in the sport, and

(21:52):
so I'd be shocked Jenny's had Gens's having a big
year at Boise State, a little bit off the radar.
I just think, I just I don't know. If there's
usually there's that quarterback on the number one ranked team
that's having a big year, I just don't. I just
don't feel that that's the case with Dylan Gabriel at Oregon.
I don't know. I think it's I think it's Travis
Hunter and everybody else. But I guess we'll find out

(22:16):
here in a few weeks.

Speaker 1 (22:18):
Not a quarterback award this year. Couldn't agree more if
he doesn't win it. The kid from Boys stay gent.
He's been fabulous. As you said, my man. Yeah, I've
kept you too long. Thank you for sharing about Ben.
You know that how I feel about you, and I
hope you have a happy Thanksgiving year. There's nobody You're
unparalleled and your work ethic and what you do in
the quality of stuff you bring to us and to
the national audience. And I appreciate you. I love you,

(22:40):
my man. Happy Thanksgiving. I look forward to seeing you
this offseason. For sure.

Speaker 2 (22:44):
Yeah, thanks, thank you, buy, I appreciate it. You know,
I love talking to you anytime. So hopefully we get
into these bowl games and into the playoffs, let's let's
hook up again and break some of these games down.
So have a great Thanksgiving and great to catch up
with you.

Speaker 1 (22:58):
Nay, same to you, my man. I appreciate you, my
best of your family. That's the great Kirk kurb Street.
Always good to have him on in his emotion and
he just is so even keeled and he makes his
point without having to rant rave about it. The best
Sports Talk seven ninety. I know him over, but you
