Symbrick European Also University Ridge Golf Course, Ridge Topic Steriors, Wisconsin,
Dot Golf, Cleary Building Corps, and the Vata Bobs. Now from the
(00:24):
new home of TPC Wisconsin and Madison. Here are the hosts of Talking Golf.
Member of the Wisconsin Golf Hall ofFame, the legendary Dennis Disiani,
longtime Madison sportscaster Paul Brown, andWisconsin sports veteran and statewide radio host Mike
Keller. And we welcome you toTPC Wisconsin and Madison, along with Dave
(00:51):
mccanner, engineer, Mike Keller,Dennis Disiani, I'm Paul Brown. Well,
guys, we've survived for nineteen weeks. I want to know about those
last three holes that you played today. You guys wouldn't believe it, but
I know we did. We did. We want everybody to know about the
last three holes that you played sixteen, seventeen and eighteen at TPC Wisconsin.
(01:17):
Yeah, yeah, I went BirdieBirdie Park. And that's say you did
look at that Birdie Birdie Park. That's there's nothing now there's other holes on
the back, correct, Yeah,I mean we didn't. We don't want
to hear about through fifteen. Butsixteen, seventeen eighteen, that's pretty good.
You go, Birdie Birdie Park leftand for a left hander, for
(01:38):
a left hander, well, welldone, poor guy. That's my career
highlight, the second one. Theother one learned about the first one.
Yeah, and he criticized me rightafter. Anyway, So anyway, something
about blind squirrels. That's right,Yeah, okay, Hey, nineteen weeks.
We've had a lot of fun.Last show it tonight. That's right,
this is this is good. Thishas been a lot of fun.
(02:00):
I appreciate the opportunity to be partof it. It's been great visiting with
you guys and our guests. Youknow. Having Steve on throughout the season
has been great. Dan Hicks onlast week and Gary Tomato all season long.
Despite your objections, Dennis, we'regonna get him on one more time
more time. Well, but we'rereviewing two contracts after oh oh oh me
(02:23):
and Gary apparently there you go.Plus, having Bobby on on a regular
basis has been fantastic. Well, and I'll tell you what. Bobby is
in Rome right now with Steve. And so what we did is we did
a zoom call with her yesterday andrecorded an interview that we're going to be
(02:43):
playing in a couple of minutes.Who took care of that for you?
Because you didn't do that on yourown, like Dave McCain and the zoom
thing. Huh. Somebody else hadto technically set you up on that.
Yes, they did. So Ijust sat at home and looked at my
computer and and I'll tell you it'san interesting interview. She has some interesting
things to say. She's also gota job in Rule. Well, yeah,
(03:04):
and I'm not going to tell youwhat it is. I'm gonna let
her tell you. Keep Steve outof troubles. Drill gave it away.
Just what else could you do?That's what she said. And she said,
I get to drive his cart andI get to go anywhere he goes.
That's we can go anywhere. Buthey, the Ryder Cup coming out,
(03:27):
what's an initial thought by both ofyou? Well, for me it's
it's to me it's one of themore fun golf events that you get to
watch. I love the team concept. I love anything Dan Hicks talked about
this last week, right, Ilove anything that you're representing your country.
Right. So I like the Olympicsbecause I love watching athletes represent the United
(03:50):
States and I love this golf towatch. You know, Steve when he's
captain, Steve when he's player. But these guys representing the United States playing
with purpose that's not individualized. Ilove that concept. That's me. How
about you, mister Tusiani, Well, I'm with you. I like that.
I like that it's a team thing. I like that the team players
(04:11):
pick the team for the most part, and they're a family. That group
has been together since grade school playingand that's what you need. That's the
difference. I think way back, way back, way back, and maybe
that they weren't as close, butnow these guys are very close. You
know, they went to college together, they've been playing together. I look
for the United States to do verywell here. It's going to be a
(04:32):
tough match, no doubt about that. And they've got to win. They've
got to win the first day becauseseventy percent of the team that wins the
first day wins the event. Andthen the other thing that we saw with
the Solheim Cup this last weekend. Is the momentum is real. Boy,
when you give it away, yeah, when you make mistakes to give it
(04:55):
away, it goes very quickly. So it's fun to watch that whole ap
respect of it. By the way, that ended in a fourteen fourteen tie,
so they Europeans maintain the cup becausethey want it last time. Also
on the show tonight, despite tizis not wanting him on, Gary Demato
will be on. Travis Becker andMike are going to talk about offseason development
(05:18):
for your golf game, and weare going to do Mike and I kind
of an extended interview with Dennis tonight. Does he wear Yes, he is.
We talked to him about it.He said it was going to happen.
You knows, will see Push thebutton. Push the button. You
got the button ready? Yeah,we might need a delay. We're going
to talk about a number of differentsubjects over a sixty plus year career.
(05:44):
But right now, what we're goingto do is play the interview that we
recorded yesterday with Bobby Stricker, who'snow in Rome with us. Is Bobby
Stricker, and we're recording this onSaturday because Bobby as an opportunity to go
roll and be part of along withher dad Steve, of watching the Ryder
(06:06):
Coup activities. Bobby, I knowyou wanted to go, well, h
yes, I know. I feellike the one of the last times I
was in the studio on the show, we were kind of I was in
that limbo of like where am Igoing to go? And yes, I
last minute get to take the tripwith my dad to Rome. I'm so
(06:27):
pumped. I actually get to bekind of involved, which is super cool.
I get to be as cart driver, so I get to drive the
cart that says Steve on it andtake him wherever he needs to go.
So I'm really looking forward to it. Yeah, and we leave tomorrow on
Sunday. So you talk about greatopportunities that you and your family and because
(06:49):
of the sport of golf, you'vebeen to a lot of places around the
world already in your young career damageyou. Yeah, Yeah, I have
very very blessed that way. Myparents have yeah, given Izzie and I
the the opportunity to come along withthem too. Yeah. Tons of places
(07:11):
all really in our in our country, which Izzie and I really have enjoyed.
We love seeing new places, welove doing touristic things, we love
seeing the local spots, and yeah, it's it's all because of golf and
we love that's we love the sportalso, So yeah, very fortunate.
My childhood has been has been alot of that. And yeah, and
(07:35):
then my sister came along when Iwas eight and I've gotten to share that
with her. So yeah, thisthis one will be really cool. We're
missing two very significant people in ourfamily obviously they don't get to come,
but I'm I'm really excited to shareit with my dad. I was just
gonna talk about that, but beforewe talk, because your mom is gonna
(07:56):
be playing at a chart of itright out in the Arizona an decent Copitan
too, right, Yeah, yep, my mom will be playing in the
tournament that she qualified for the USSenior Am in Phoenix, so she'll be
doing that, and then Izzie willbe playing in her post her postseason stuff.
So I'm pretty sure. I alwaysget confused what comes first. It's
(08:18):
either regionals or sectionals. I neverknow. I think it's regionals. So
yes, she'll be doing that whilewe're there. So yeah, we got
a lot, We got a lotgoing on, but it's cool. Are
you going to get a chance totour rome at all or pretty tight schedule
in a week of that? Yeah, So I'm not really sure. I've
tried to ask my dad. Hedoesn't really know. But I know for
(08:41):
sure I get to go see thecoliseum, which I'm very excited about.
That's one thing that I know forcertain. And then I think it'll just
kind of depend on scheduling. Andlike I said, I'm kind of working,
so I'm I'm not really I don'tknow how much free time I'm gonna
have, so we'll have to seewhen I get there. When you get
(09:01):
opportunities like this, uh, Iwould imagine it's got to have helped you
growing as a person and learning fromthose lifetime experiences, right, Yeah,
Yeah, it has for sure, and it's really been yeah, my childhood.
So I feel like, yes,I've gotten to yeah, learn new
(09:26):
cultures and meet new people, meetdifferent kinds of people. Yeah. Being
able to share that with my familyit is very very special to me.
And then as I kind of gotolder and into my gulf more, it
kind of took on a different likeI've took on a different outlook on it,
kind of because I I really appreciatedmore so what my dad was doing
(09:54):
and I got to learn a lotfrom you know, the competition and the
Gulf part also, which you know, like when we when we my sister
and I go out and watch him, It's amazing how we both can like
come back to then our own golfand be like, even though maybe we
didn't practice and play a ton whenwe were gone, unnecessarily, you feel
(10:16):
like you learn a lot and you'reyou're just taking You're taking a lot in
course management, how you know, our our dad, but other players are
handling emotions all of that stuff. So yeah, as I've gotten older,
that's changed, but it's it's beenIt's been very cool. What's your glance
for the next couple of months interms of go Yeah, so kind of
(10:39):
entering my off season. Really thispast week, I've haven't done a ton
of of practice or even playing.I played eighteen holes of my mom and
a couple of her friends, somemore fun stuff and just kind of taken
a break a little bit. Everyelection period, I guess too of like
(11:01):
what I feel like needs to getbetter. What I felt like I did
I did well, and the growththat I that I had over the season,
and then yeah, kind of planningwhat the next step is. I'm
still gonna play, so just youknow, seeing what I'm gonna start.
It's probably gonna be some you know, mini tour stuff in Florida in January.
(11:24):
So really nothing nothing until then, which I'm really excited about. I
get to watch my sister, watchmy dad, cheer on my mom obviously
from Afar, but yeah, dosome other other things and be home.
As you've reflected back and you're playingexperiences so far, what are your thoughts
(11:45):
and what does it do for youin terms of the future. Yeah,
definitely beat myself up a lot whenI like the last well the last month
or so, I was to myself. I really I really didn't perform how
I wanted to this whole year, and then at the end, you know,
(12:07):
missing out on getting the Stage twoof Q School really bothered me,
just because it really just puts everythingup in the air of where I'm going
to be able to play next year, and like the APS and tour seems
like kind of out of reach atthe moment. I know it's not because
there's a lot of ways to getback to the EPs, and tour.
But yeah, there so ended onkind of a sour note, but that
(12:33):
the last few weeks have been moreof a switch of like, Okay,
you did a lot of really goodthings and a lot of growth, and
I see that I have. Ieven though feel like it was a negative
season that there there was, Iam still trending and there is you know,
(12:54):
improvement there even though I don't maybefeel it right now. But I
remember you saying to be one timea couple of years ago, being behind
the Mike nixamera, big out infront and those kid thing with the experiences
you're gaining, the interviews being arethe show this year and that kind of
(13:16):
thing. To me, it's obviousshould you be interested, I would think
you'd have a potential career weight downthe road in front of the mine or
the camp. Would you have anyinteresting to do it? Thank you,
Paul, that's very nice. Iwould I My background My degree is journalism,
(13:37):
so yes, this this stuff hasalways intrigued me a lot, and
in specifically sport, but golf.Yeah, I have thought the last the
last month or so, I haveactually thought about like, Okay, if
I were to do something else, what would that be in Yes, I
would really like to do. Ithink I've gotten comfortable speaking out like these
(14:03):
kind of things. I think Iwould be okay in front of the microphone.
It would be really fun because you'reif you're thinking about, like on
course commentating, I think it'd begreat because you are in the game still
like a lot. So Yeah, down the road, I could see it
all about instruction, your fail lookat your family, yeah, your uncle,
(14:28):
yeah, Mark, the whole family, yeah, watching part of it.
You could be a great asset interms of instruction too, especially for
women. Right, Yeah, yeah, that's that is not really I don't
enjoy that as much as most peoplein my family. I don't feel like
I'm very good at it. Butlike you said, yes, this this
(14:54):
TPC now and all the opportunities thatare coming from it. I there are
so many avenues that I could choose. You're right, and I have really
not thought about that one, justbecause I'm not super interested in it.
But I mean the impact that thatme and even my mom my mom is
(15:15):
so good at it. We keeptelling her like you should get your I
think you need some sort of licenseor something for it. But yes,
the woman's game is trending in theright direction, and it would be really
cool to have a positive impact, especially in our city. So definitely,
definitely something I can think about. So well, I tell you what,
I think, You've got a greatfuture and probably several areas and now ultily
(15:41):
the golf career continues for a longtime and then you can move on to
another phase that I would as sifthim a large part of your life.
It's going to be devoted in someway shape or the golf right, Yes,
yeah, yeah, that's kind ofwhat But it seems like at the
moment and I'm not I'm not upsetabout it. I love it. It's
served my family and I very wellleave. Yeah, it's just it's a
(16:03):
special it's a special game. Soyeah, that the future, the future
is there for sure. Well,I want to thank you on behap of
Mike and Day but everybody else involvedwith the show. It's been a great
addition and a lot of fun thisyear. Thank you and look forward to
it in the future. Thank you. Yeah, it's been awesome. I
say it every week. You guysare awesome, So thank you for letting
(16:25):
me be a part of it.One final thing, would you see the
Pulp and put in a good wordfor all of us. Oh, for
sure, for sure, we willthank you, Thank you, Paul,

Wisconsin, our final episode of TalkingGolf for this calendar year. Gary Demato
has been a big part of itall season long. He is the president
of the National Golf Writers Association ofAmerica, also with WIS dot Golf and
Gary, you got a chance toplay in an event today, so I
appreciate you joining us. On yourway out, I think you were at
Lasnia, which is one of thegreat places in this state to go as
(20:15):
well. Let's do this first,Gary, Let's talk a little bit about
what's coming up in this next weekend. It's the Ryder Cup. And we've
talked to you about this process throughoutthe year, and Steve's over there and
Zach Johnson is the US captain onthis. The USA has not won on
foreign soil in the Ryder Cup inthirty years. Why is this different?
(20:38):
What do you see? Well, you know, I got a chance to
play the golf course. I wentto Rome last year and played Marcus Simoni
with a PG of America delegation andwhat's different is just you know, the
atmosphere of playing on foreign flows becauseit's tough, and we see that when
you're up here, and we seeit when Team US he goes over there.
(21:02):
What's different is America's got a great, great, great team. But
you know, they've always had greatteams going over there. A lot of
people think this is gonna be ablow off for the US. I don't,
and I think maybe Dennis is oneof them. I don't see it
that way. I think it's gonnabe closed. What do you know,
speak for yourself, mister president,Mister president. When we talked to when
(21:27):
we talked to Steve about this lastweek when he joined US, he talked
about how they've narrowed the fairways nownat three hundred yards, how they've got
a couple of drivable par fours, they've grown up the rough. I mean,
they do set up these courses, both in the US and on European
soil to favor their style of play, and that is part of what the
(21:48):
Ryder Cup has always been. Itis. Yeah, you know, they're
gonna do what they did with LegosNationale and Paris a few years back,
a couple of years ago, andthey're gonna narrow the fairways, they're gonna
brother up, and they're going toslow it down the greens. That's the
formula. It's worked for them. They're going to stick to it, and
it's just a matter of can theUS players adjust, especially on the green.
(22:11):
I think has been better than TeamUSA in recent writer cups over there.
They just look better, They makemore bust, that's what it's what
writer from shut and they do itbetter. Tis do you want to respond
to Gary's kind of questioning you alittle bit about Well, you would think
that being over there, he'd bea little bit more, you know,
(22:32):
he'd know more about it, youknow, but he didn't tell what is
what he tell you? Well,he tells you the same thing that they
cheat. Excuse me that they thatthey set the course up the way they
want to set it up. Ofcourse we did that too, We did
it up here at Wristling Streets. You know, we did everything for the
American players. So that's what theydo. But I really think that this
team has the internal de fortitude, the get together, the family affair,
(22:59):
the family relationship, better than anyother team that they've had over there.
That's what they have now. Andit's like I said, the team members
picked the team, and they pickedtheir buddies that they play with. I
mean, they criticize what's his name, Tom Johnson, but the commissioner,
(23:21):
no, the kid, the kidthat plays with It came in the last
that they're criticizing there, Justin Thomas, you know, but you know he's
He and Jordan's Speth are very verydifficult to beat. By the way,
Jack Nicholas was quoted in the lastI think day or two he said,
Dustin Johnson should be on this team. Yeah, well, you know he
(23:44):
should be, but we should tryto pay on a PGA tour. Yeah,
you know, that's on you,Paul. You brought that up with
Dennison right here. You knew ifit was important and he should be here.
But then again, like I said, the money is what's important,
not so much the Americanism. Youknow, I don't you know, I
just don't see how this other thanthis. I know, from a business
(24:07):
standpoint, the people that have themoney controlled business, and in that partnership,
I know who's got the money.Yeah, that's what I worry about.
Okay, Gary, Maybe it's notfairer because you haven't had a little
time to think about it. Butif I said, what's potentially the top
story in golf in Wisconsin the summer, what instantly would come to your mind?
(24:30):
I guess the top story was theUS Senior Open, right, you
know, Padric, Holden, offStrick and Jerry. I can't see a
bigger story next because it was anational story. If we recap kind of
look back at the year, youknow, Steve had one of the more
remarkable seasons, maybe the most remarkableseason ever on the PGA Tour champions and
(24:57):
that was part of it, rightfrom going and winning the m FAM to
going up to Steven's point, Itwas all part of that season. But
Steve is absolutely one of the storiesof the year in the state. No
oh, no question, you know, I you know, you can recite
all the stats. I mean,he leads virtually every statistical category and PGA
Church Champions. But the one thatstands out to me is fifteen starts he's
(25:21):
finished first or second eleven times. What have you ever heard that? I
mean, I don't know, eventhough Tiger did that when he was at
his best, that is that isunbelievable to finish first or second eleven times
or the fifteen starts and the otherfour. You know, it wasn't that
far back either. Eight was theworst. Yeah, and that's something I
mean, we did that last weektalking about the number of since he joined
(25:45):
PGA Tour champions and the number oftop tens and the number of top fives,
and it's ridiculous. It's not agolf statistic that we're we've ever really
seen before. We see it inother sports. It's a tennis stat You
know, the best players in tennisare always going to make it to the
finals or the semifinals. But ingolf it doesn't work that way. But
it did this year. And we'rechatting. Go ahead, Gary, I'm
(26:07):
just gonna say, Yeah, youlook at your surprise when he's sixty eight.
Do you think every round's going tobe sixty four or five? Yeah,
it's been incredible. Gary Senior writerfor Wisconsin Dot Golf, the top
source of information for golf, notonly in Wisconsin and beyond. Gary,
you write a multitude of stories everyyear and that kind of thing. Is
(26:29):
there one that you wrote this yearthat you you found was really a gratifying
story for whatever reason? Something that'sstuck out in your mind. You know.
It was just a couple of weeksago. I went up to a
little tongue called Ostio, Wisconsin. It's where Ben Siege was from, the
Lei Ben Si Beata Marquette and thirtythree heart Attack, I think it was.
(26:52):
And I'll tell you what, thattown is the most golf crazy community
I've ever seen. Tomas sixteen hundredhas produced five Division one players in the
last like fifteen years, and Ithink they finished first or second. Like
in it's kind of like Steves Tricker'snumber, Like almost every time they go
to state they win it. Andit's a it's such a fun story to
do. I was received with openarms up there and played a little tournament
(27:15):
and that one was gratifying and realquickly. The other one that wasn't gratifying,
but it was really interesting was thehigh school of freshman who made a
hole in one and while he wasretrieving the ball, his his push card
rolled into a lake and he hadto dive in the water to save his
push card and lost his phone. And just that's something you don't hear about
(27:37):
every day. It wasn't a walkoff, it was a swim off,
he's not a walk. Well,Gary, I tell you what, you
made a major contribution to the showdespite his giving you bad time. Thanks
for being on all season. Weappreciate it. Gary, Thank you very
much. Okay, Hey, thanksguy, my pleasure. Thank you.

Isn't that right? Joel, yourgame, your store always at the little
more time to visit with Travis Becker. I'm Mike Heller. This is our
(31:07):
segment that we do on Talking Golfthat has to do with lesson giving.
We're not to the end of theseason. We're just to the end of
our Talking Golf season on the radio. But soon enough there will be snow
flying another month from now, twomonths from now, and we get into
a five or six month off seasonfor many golfers. Travis, one of
(31:29):
the things that we talk about isplayer development away from the season time.
That can be physical player development beingbetter fit, stronger, more flexibility,
mobility, things of that nature, but also just into an off season program,
which I would think is all encompassing. Let's talk about that tonight.
Yes, so we are. We'relooking forward. We're already in preparation mode
(31:51):
for our Winter Riser program that startsin January, and that's a program that
runs five sessions. We meet everyother week we meet, We'll cover putting,
we'll cover short game, we'll coverfull swing, talk a little bit
about some of the management things thattake place on the golf course. But
the wintertime is a great time towork on technique. Okay, let's go
short TOI long. I've wondered thismany times over the years that I've played
(32:16):
golf. What can you do towork on putting in the offseason? Other
than finding a place that has anindoor putting green? Are the what are
the things we can do to makeour putting game better? One, we
can't actually get outside and on agreen. Sure, if you have any
carpet at your house, you canwork on your putting. But we use
(32:37):
some of the tools that we hada few episodes ago with a putting mirror,
we use a metronome, we usea tape measure, so you can
you can work on setup. Youcan work on some technical things maybe with
your club path and your club face, and also just dialing in your your
stroke length and tempo. And wegive you some of these drills to focus
(32:58):
in. You don't have the greenin front of you, but you can
definitely work on mechanics like carpet rolesat about an eight. That's kind of
it can be kind of a problem. All right, Let's talk about some
of the other elements then that youcan work on in the winter that can
help to develop the game. Sowe're talking about iron play or full swings.
What are the things that players canlook forward to doing when it's too
(33:22):
cold to be outside, too coldto be outside. So we definitely want
to go back to the basics andreally take a hard look at the fundamentals.
Look at the grip, look atthe posture, look at the ball
position. Well, we can checkpositions. Again, we're not worried about
ball flight, so we can bea little more mechanical and we can build
some fields. Yeah, we've talkedabout that earlier in the year, and
(33:42):
we talked about some of the toolsthat you can use to help in the
game. So let's talk about animpact bag, because it's one of the
things a lot of people when you'rein the golf season, they just want
to play. They'll work on thegame a little bit, but they're working
on the game so they can goplay. Some of the tools that you
have into an off season allow morerepetition and less feedback that sometimes can make
(34:05):
you revert back to your norms ifyou get to play correct. We you
know, when you're working on yourswing, you want to work on your
swing. When you're playing, youwant to play. It's it's tough to
separate the two when you're out there. But during the off season it's a
great time where we teach you howto practice and how to do it slow
motion, and how to stop insome of the positions and really build different
fields. Maybe that you're not usedto spend a few minutes you're talking about
(34:30):
the fitness element of golf because weget into an offseason and somebody says,
I'm just not flexible. Well, now you have five or six months to
find a way, because it's notan overnight process anyway, but you get
time to do some things that areadvantageous to your game in the way your
physicality works. So there are fitnessprograms designed for this game, not putting
(34:54):
you on the spot as to whetheryou're doing those elements as well. But
for people that want to spend theoffseason kind of tweaking what they do physically,
how can they go about it.Definitely we're fortunate enough here again I'm
a golf professional, not a personaltrainer, but I do have a team.
So we have people on our teamthat are specific to fitness side for
(35:15):
golf, where they can do ana body assessment, take a look at
again maybe your hamstrings are tight, are your shoulders are tight, or you
have a bad back, and justto get you on the correct path and
the correct program so you're not goingto hurt yourself. Yeah, but you're
gonna make improvements. I know it'snot here today, but it will be
the new teaching facility here at TPCWisconsin that will have even greater opportunities in
(35:40):
the winter. Talking about the indoorputting green and being able to hit warm
to cold so you can be insidebut hit to the outside and be able
to do that throughout the winter. Those elements and when they're coming, those
are significant in developing a game andnever getting too far away from it.
Correct. We're gonna have one ofthe best facilities here in the Midwest when
(36:04):
this gets completed. We're gonna havetechnology in there. We're gonna have a
professional staff that's very experienced and iswell known in all areas. And like
I said, it'll be a teamof people. Whether we're looking to have
our not only our golf professionals forswing coaches, but we will have personal
trainers, will have mental coaches,we will have nutritionists all on our staff,
(36:25):
club fitter. So we're almost bringingit like a tour level academy to
our students where they are going tohave a team of people there to help
them play better golf. Yeah, and let me add to this, because
we've talked about this all year. This isn't just for those who want to
play tournament competition, but also justfor those who want to take their twenty
five handicap and take it down toa fifteen, the fifteen handicap that wants
(36:50):
to get to single digits. It'sall elements of the game you're talking about
everybody, not just kids, notjust young adults, not tournament players,
but all of them. Correct. We will We will work with the beginner
player to the tour professional and everybodyin between. Anybody looking to get better.
We are here for them. Yeah, We're not that far away.
(37:12):
And for those do you suggest forsome who end up playing a lot,
is there an advantage to having anydowntime to take weeks away from the game
or a couple of weeks away fromthe game. I would say for the
bulk of people, it's good toput the clubs down for a little bit
and regroup and get that excitement back. Typically November December maybe downtimes where a
(37:37):
lot of people with the holidays andfamily get togethers and the weather's turning.
And then as soon as January rollsback around and golf gets back on TV,
people got that bug back again andthey're excited about it. Well,
I'll tell you this, I've enjoyedthe opportunity for United to visit on the
lessons side, the teaching side. You've helped me personally, and I think
(37:57):
for those who have listened to Ithink this has been a great boon for
those who love the game of golf, and I know you do. So
Thanks for all the time we've gotto spend together this year, and we'll
look forward to doing it again nextThanks for having me, guys, Travis.

(41:22):
of the show to talking to Tisabout a number of different things over his
career. And he's given us uhthat the thumbs up is that whatever we
ask him, whatever, just makesure the delay is one. David's got
his thumb on the thing right now, A big enough tea team me up,
(41:43):
seriously, Tis, let's start withI've listened to you and Larry over
the years and that type of thing. Your dad must have had an unbelievable
influence on both of you guys.Is that a fair assessment. Yeah.
You know, he was a PGAmember and he was said pro green scoop
greenskeeper superintendent, so he did allthree things at the courses. I was
(42:05):
up there for fifty sixty years orwhatever, and uh, you know,
we had an opportunity to work inthe bag room and work in the golf
shop and cut greens and cut fairwaysand do all those things. So we
were pretty well grilled. And thenhe's a pretty bright guy too. He
has a degree in accounting and stufflike that. So it was good.
I thought it was maybe, youknow, he could have been a little
(42:30):
easier on that's I mean, that'sthe feeling. He was that scrape up
my leg in the back here kindof tough, you know, did you
kind of develop somewhat of the samephilosophy in a way, Well, you
know, there was no monkey around, you know, he was everything had
to be the way it's supposed tobe, and you know, you had
to have a good set of eyes. You have to you have to you
(42:52):
know, when you go around, you have to look around because the people
that you're entertaining, the member isseeing all those things. You know,
you had to be you had tohave ladies eyes, you know, you
have to see what's going on.Then it's the this this game has been
central part of your life from youknow, I assume the time you're ten
to twelve years old, So you'vehad three Yeah, so you've had sixty
(43:15):
seventy years of golf, I know, and we're going to talk about some
of the things you've given. Whatis the game given you? Well,
it gave me an opportunity to giveback to it. I mean that's really
what it's about it. It wasnot about me taking things. It was
about me given And it was anopportunity there too. I learned a long
(43:36):
time ago. You find your giftand you give it away. Okay,
yeah, obviously have a gift inthe teaching part and stuff like that,
and you give it away and youknow paying you I mean, I'm not
a whore, you know, Yeah, Well pay me. But you know
that's the smile. It's when theperson leaves here, it's that ability for
(43:57):
they come back. And I sawyou judge a business by what comes back.
Now, hold on a second,Paul, have you got this in
your notes? So I'm gonna stealit and I'll apologize to you later.
You've done all of the all ofthis teaching your entire professional life. A
lot of people who haven't met youand worked with you realize, don't realize
that you all those lessons free.I mean you, I mean, I'm
(44:20):
sure you got some money at somepoint for lessons, but the bulk of
what you do is complimentary, right. And when I first started out does
that it was twelve thirteen hours overthere, you know, where I would
would wear a pair of blue pantsand they'd be the sun would fade them
out. So there was a lotof that twelve. But after a certain
period of time that was not thedeal. You know, we were charging
(44:40):
a twenty five thirty five bucks anhour, stuff like that, and it
transports, you know pretty soon, you know, can you take see my
daughter? Can you see my son? Can you how are you going to
do that? So I just wentthat way and I opted opt the Dutch
philosophy that you know, I foundmy gift, I give it away,
and you know, I'm happier nowabout this good. That's what's important.
(45:04):
Let's talk a little bit about Cherokeeand then we're going to get into TPC
and that kind of thing too. You've told the story basically. I don't
know exactly what it was, butbasically, you came to Cherokee a number
of years ago with about fifty sixtybucks in your pocket. Sixty three and
sixty three bucks. What has keptyou here all those years? Well,
(45:27):
you know, you could have goneon to many different things, right,
Oh, yeah, there was alot of things. I think the people
kept me here, the people thatI met here. That was a big
item. Foxy needed help on thegolf end. He was good at at
the real estate sign So then youwanted to build this. So we built
this and John was with us,John, Paulus and Paulus, and he
(45:50):
didn't get along to us, sohe left. The next thing. You
know, here's what we got thiswhole deal not knowing this that you know
in the process, I think backof those try to go to work for
somebody that's about twenty twenty five yearsolder than you, right, and then
when he retires by the get thebusiness. Well I didn't know about that,
you know. I just did it. And like I said, I
(46:13):
had sixty three bucks, wife, three kids, no car. My buddy
Pete gave me his car come downhere. We lived up in Steven's Point
at the end of the airport upthere, and I commuted, so I
picked the range. I was doneby ten o'clock drive to point, then
back here at eight o'clock the nextmorning, and uh, you know,
so all of a sudden, youknow, there was a lot to do
here and next thing, you know, years start going by. And then
(46:36):
should I go back out on thetour again? That's what I was going
to do, and Foxy said, well why don't you stay here? We
need to So I sold memberships andI attended bar down with Steve Carvell.
That's what I did, you know. So and it worked okay, but
I could see the progress. Aquestion on the playing side, some people
have competitive regret. Do you haveany competitive regret that you didn't do more
(46:59):
of that? I mean you giftthere too, obviously, Oh yeah,
you know, I mean there wasI played on that tour for sixty nine,
seventy, seventy one, seventy two, and you know, all indicators
to the people that I was withTommy, both people like that big nine
players. They took me under theirwing and I was moving along. But
(47:19):
I had to make a choice, like everybody does. If I'm going that
route and I'm gone all the timeand I got three little kids at home,
how does that work? Yeah,so I had to make a decision.
You know, I'm going to takeyou know, you know, faith,
family, education, golf. That'sthe priorities. Don't mix them up
well and take much when you gothat way. Golf was down at the
end. Faith and family was upfront. And that was the key there.
(47:45):
You know, three kids, youknow, the oldest one was three years
old. You know, Dennis, over the years, you've done some remodeling
a Cherokee and that kind of thing. You could have maybe remodeled to a
certain extent. The course, basicallyin sixty years needed some improvement. Why
(48:05):
the TPC model. Why not justmaybe make some improvements to the golf course
and live with that versus going allin on the TPC. Well, the
keyword was some improvements on the golfcourse when you get into it, and
what do you how are you gonnayou improve it? What are you gonna
put in watering system? I mean, that's two two point five million,
there's put put up. So Igot together and Steve and I and we
(48:29):
talked about it and stuff like that, and well, I don't know about
this, and you know, hedidn't want to He does not want to
be in the golf business. Soit wasn't like Steve was going to dump
money into there, which he hasn'tdone. And I said, well,
and I ran into a guy,Steve Winsloft. Steve Winsloft works for the
TPC, right, he's been therefor twenty seven, twenty eight years.
(48:49):
I got to meet him and hedid the work up in Blaine, Minnesota.
Whatever that course is up there,it's a TPC, Yeah, it's
up there, and he did athing called flip It. What the hell
does that flip? What? Youknow? Well, it's in a marsh.
You take out the clay and youtake out the peat, you dump
that on the fairway and then yougo down after the glacial sand. That's
(49:10):
what was here. So well, glacial sand. What does all this now?
So we did the soil borings.Yeah, it's full of it.
Wow. So okay we get goinghere. Now what does that cost?
And then we've got to do alleighteen holes and you do this and you
do that and made the decision.Okay, you know it's one of those
(49:30):
things. Let's do it and doit. Meaning what we did here it
cut down six hundred and fifty treesand we've got, you know, all
these fairways. The whole thing onehundred and fifty sum acres that's sand top
dressed. So it's really really perfect. Is this year legacy TPC? And
does it mean that? What doesit mean to you? I don't know
if that's what it is. Inever looked at it like that. I
(49:52):
feel so I'll tell you what Ifeel the best about every member who comes
out here and non member, theylove it. And you know when I
stand next to the lady Hudda togo, they just love it. That's
it. That's all I needed tohear was that that's what's good. So
you know, I don't know,legacy is what it is. There's a
lot of people involved, and Ihave a lot to do with it.
Obviously you're paying for it. Youknow, so, but it'll and then
(50:16):
to go back to that. Thenthis guy Winslow, Yeah he's with TPC.
So next thing is am fam youknow Jack Salis weel. These are
all friends of mine, you knowwest Straight. I mean they're Ceosley,
what about this? What about that? And then I'm approached by them and
Steve and would I be interested inhaving the tournament here? Well, you
(50:37):
know, I mean it's a tournamentcourse. That's what we built. So
here we go. Now TPC getsinvolved, and now we're one of we're
one of thirty private courses in theUnited States. Not a private course in
Wisconsin. It's fine buttars. Sothat one thing. Next thing, you
know, we have a tournament. And now they're talking about other things that
(50:58):
would come here too. But sendpositive to that because it's worried about my
members getting here. We're selling availabilityand service. Those are the two things
we're selling. So you can gethere to play in. There's a lot
of service when you get here.I always think, Dennis, it's interesting
when people talk about legacy. One, it means a couple of things.
When you're getting older, right,so you know, legacy is it's talking
(51:21):
about age. But you talk aboutfamily faith. So I mean I always
think that your children, your family, that's your legacy. Your grandkids in
your case as well, that that'sa legacy. This is your life's work,
but your life is family. Itbegins there. Well that's the start
of it. You know, familyis in and we grew up that way
(51:42):
where I grew up, that wasyou know, Italian family. That's how
it was. You know, itwasn't like we have it here where you
know, you fly private airplanes andfly to Rome and all the other.
What the hell is all that? You know, drive these Mercedes bends and
stuff like that. It's it's atotal different deal, you know, lifestyle
that's there, But that's worth allthat. I mean, if I have
(52:05):
to two lives kind of like, yeah, one one that family one which
is totally different, and one thatpeople see me here you know what a
hard ass he is and all thatsort of stuff. Well, you know,
what would your dad say today onthis property? What you do?
What you've built here? The membership? I could hear them, do you
know what they do? You knowwhat they have you're doing? Yeah,
(52:28):
that's what he would say. Doyou know what you're doing? Because we
did. One time we had I'lljust tell one story here when we Larry
and I larry. So we hadI don't know, maybe a thousand dozen
balls or so in the storage room. Sure, so we walked back.
So what the Hellunred knows as wellas the ball, what are you gonna
do with them? I saw, well, Dad, you know that we
sell those, and you're gonna sellall those balls? Said no, we
(52:49):
we turn them three times. Idon't sell that many balls in them.
Only ten years of here, youknow that type of So we had no
idea about stuff. You know, all the things that you've done in your
career. If you had one mulligan, would you use it on anything?
If you look back, No,it worked out as good as it could
be because I'm going by that samepriorities. So how hell can you be
(53:16):
that? And it's carried over andyou can see it in my son,
you can see it in my twodaughters, and you can see the difference,
and you can see, well,it's run over to Steve too.
You know, he understands perfectly whatdid his family, and I think to
a large degree of why he issuccessful because that is what's first that disappointments.
(53:37):
If there are some things that happenedin his career minuscule compared to what
it is now. But it's letme tell you what. It's a very
simple lifestyle that I have and nocomplicated at all. I enjoy coming over
here. It's not work. Mostof the people they're friends of mine.
So I come here. Guy said, when you're going to retire? I
(53:59):
said, from what? Come here? I sit in the sports launch,
I sit through these guys. Theysit and they bs and we have lunch
together and that's it. Well, you don't have to retire. But we
got to cut this off because we'realmost out of time. Out of time
