Speaker 1 (00:12):
You're on board with the Ultimate Outdoors Radios.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
A quest to bring the outdoors to you.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Once again.
Speaker 4 (00:24):
Our resident guides to the outdoors the Captain and the Walldog.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Hey, good Saturday morning, and thanks for listening. This is
Wally the wall Dog Bamfee along with Captain Terry Fray.
Good morning, cap.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
Hey mar Waldog. Good Saturday morning. We are back at
the Wisconsin Fishing expol right here in Madison, Wisconsin. We
have a whole lineup of guests for you today. We're
going to talk about all the activities. A few questions
that seem to pop up about the XBO I'm going
to run through a few. There is a parking fee. Also,
there is a military first responder discount for tickets. You
(00:57):
can come in walk through the boats. Another frequent question,
can you get in the boats? Yes, you can. You
can play with some of the rods and reels. You
can print out a ticket before you come to the show.
Plenty of food and beverage and boys. There a list
of kids activities, so get those kids off the couch,
get them hooked on fishing.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
There's over three hundred and fifty booths at the show.
Over twenty thousand people at ten This is one of
the best shows in the home Midwest.
Speaker 5 (01:24):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
Dan Durban's gonna join us. We're gonna talk more about
what's happening at the show. We have been talking a
lot of fishing and we're still talking fishing. Co owner
Dan Durban from the Wisconsin Fishing Expos joining me. We're
gonna give a rundown on that. It is Saturday, the
twenty second and the twenty third, and Dan, good morning.
Speaker 6 (01:46):
Good morning.
Speaker 5 (01:47):
How are you doing.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
We're doing good. So Fish Expo still Saturday and Sunday
yet here right off the beltline, Madison, Wisconsin, that is
the location of that. So Dan, should we kick it
off with ticket options for the folks.
Speaker 5 (02:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (02:02):
Sure, I mean, you know, you can definitely pay cash
at the door. That's that's actually your cheapest way to
get in, you know, twelve bucks, and then the parking
that's that's the county. But you can do it online
and it'll speed up the process a little bit, not
a ton, but then you do you know, suffer the
(02:23):
dollars fifty ticket increase with with with Ticketmaster. But yeah,
so it's still a cheap date, right, It's a lot
cheaper than checking out a movie for two hours. You
get a full day of entertainment here.
Speaker 4 (02:37):
Well, you know, I talked to people last year day
and they really liked it electronic because they did get
in quicker. And you know, for a buck and a half,
I'd rather skip the line and shoot right into the
show because the lines do tend to get long, and
I encourage people to, you know, either get there early
because you're you know, the line does get long, especially
on Saturday, so get there early. There is a also
(03:00):
there's a charge for parking.
Speaker 6 (03:02):
Correct, Yeah, there is a charge for parking. That's I think,
I gosh, because we don't do it. I think it's
seven to fifty. But yeah, about fifty for a big
radio host. You know, I know you're you and Wally.
That's not a big deal, you know for you guys.
But if you want a cheaper deal, just take cash
at the door and you're still going to get in
really quick.
Speaker 5 (03:22):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (03:22):
And you have a military and first responder discount. People
just go to the website all the infos there. Hey,
let's jump into seminar speakers. You have probably one of
the best lineups. I'll mention a couple of them, Tommy
Kimos again, he's always great. Steve Hrbeck legendary musclearing muskie angler,
Tom Wins going to be there with his electronics seminar
(03:43):
and folks, I don't care what seminar, what electronics you run,
you need to attend this. I was there last year
and you can learn a ton and apply it right
into your boat. Greg Karch has his kids and I
guess Larry's an dan.
Speaker 7 (04:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (04:02):
Man, we got twenty five seminar speakers this year. We've
we've definitely been a little bit of a turn in
terms of seminar speakers because you know, we unfortunately the
bass Master Lead series stuff blankets both sides of our show.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
So we have to.
Speaker 6 (04:21):
Our our fix for that is that we you know,
we can't get a lot of the you know, some
of the big speakers, but we did find some major
ones anyway in terms of Fishman Row and and twenty
five different speakers that will we'll teach about everything you
need to know. And like you said, you know, I'm
just talking bass. But Tom Hoyn and Kemos, you know,
(04:43):
two of the biggest Walley guys going and both you know,
for Tom Hoyn and Ishman Roll Die was one of
our sponsors. And if you attend both seminars, you go,
you come on and catch one and there's going to
be a part two seminar that's completely different from both guys.
And I was going to donate a couple of you know,
(05:05):
ride and real combo. That's two three hundred dollars combo
if you if you attend both SO and Our the
Luck of Winners, So.
Speaker 4 (05:12):
Well, that's great. How about we got a couple of
minutes left, Dan, how about kids? I call it kids
fun man. You have a whole lineup of kids' own trout,
pond fish, Bengal bumper bolts, mintal races. Wow, I want
to touch on all that good stuff.
Speaker 6 (05:29):
Yeah, I mean it's a ton of fun for everybody
with like you said, with the bumper boats and the
trout fishing and our trout fishing. If you if the
kid catches a fish with a tag trout, you actually
get a prize as well. And and the gear gang,
whether you're a kid or an adult, you could win
a fantastic trip to northern Wisconsin.
Speaker 5 (05:49):
And just for.
Speaker 6 (05:50):
Showing up, you know. So there's a ton of stuff
to do and it's a it's a super family friendly event.
You could spend the whole day, not a problem.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
Yeah, we should mention the price, patrol a wander the show,
giving out stuff. It's really a cool idea. Last thing, Dan,
forty five seconds or so, three hundred and three hundred
and thirty boots, three fifty. What do you have this year?
Speaker 6 (06:13):
It's over three fifty. We're approaching four hundred booths or
eighty different boats. And just so you know, the prices
has come down a bit in financing, so it's we've
dropped a couple of points so people can come there
and enjoy the whole day and see lures and baits.
The most important thing. It's baits and stuff and tackle
(06:35):
that you're not going to find on Amazon. It's you're
going to talk to the people that build the baits
because they built them because they want to catch fish,
and they want you to catch fish.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Captain, we got a big day ahead of us here.
Speaker 5 (06:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:46):
I'd like to thank Dan Durbin, co owner of the
Wisconsin Fishing Expo, for filling us in on a full
week of the event's here of Saturday and Sunday left here.
As Wally mentioned over three hundred and fifty exhibitors, and
Wally would need a couple day to talk about the exhibitors.
But the neat thing is, you know, Wally I call it,
there's a couple of things going on in the fishing world,
(07:07):
and that's the lithium battery craze and the forward facing
sonar crazing boy. There's a couple of good guests coming
up for seminars. Tom Win is going to be doing
an electronic seminar and also Tommy Kimos is going to
be here. He always jumps into that. But Wally, we
got a good guest, and we got another pile of
(07:28):
boats here that people can jump in, check them out
and get some ideas for your spring boat purchase.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Yep. Coming up next will be Andy Manke, the owner
of Don's Marine in Lodi, Wisconsin. They're a major sponsor
of the show and have over twenty boats out here,
and so stop I say hi to Andy and his crew.
There's just a tremendous amount of boats. Kem. This is
one of the best places to go shop a boat.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
Well, the nice thing is, Wally, the variety, whether it's
a pontoon boat, speedboat, fishing boat, whatever you can get
in that thing to feel for it, talk to the
dealer right there, go home, take a couple of days,
and you know, think about it. So Andy will fill
us in on what they're going to bring to the show,
which is always a good variety.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
Here's Andy joining us. Next is the owner operator of
Don's Marine and Lodi, Wisconsin. Dons is a family owned
dealer offering new un used boats, plus they offer boat storage,
service and repair. Dons has been setting the standard in
service excellence since nineteen thirty six. Andy Manke, Welcome to
the show.
Speaker 8 (08:28):
Hey, thank you very much.
Speaker 9 (08:30):
Wally appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
First off, we want to give you a big thank
you for all your support with casting for Kids, helping
us get some Lumcraft boats which we've raffled off to
make a lot of money for kids with cancer. So
we want to thank you for that.
Speaker 9 (08:44):
Oh yeah much, Thank you very much for that. We're
so happy to be involved with such a great cause
and we've been we've been helping the community fundraising for
kids with cancer for over fifteen years and we're going
to do it again this year and provide another Alumiccraft
boat for such a great cause.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Well, thank you, thank you, thank Youan I should ask
you what brands and boats will you have on display
at this year's Wisconsin Fishing X QUO.
Speaker 7 (09:12):
Well, we got.
Speaker 9 (09:12):
Lots of great stuff coming this year twenty twenty five.
All the manufacturers are stepping up with brand new product.
We're going to be displaying the all new Allumacraft X model,
the Trophy X and also the Competitor X. This is
at one hundred percent brand new boat from Allumacraft this year.
(09:33):
All new hull design, all new interior design. This boat
performs like no other illuminicraft we ever had previously with
the new hull design and it certainly rocks. We're also
going to be displaying the Smoker Craft. They have brought
the new Contour package this year, stunning paint graphics and
(09:55):
interior design. This boat is incredible to look at, dunning
and it has also stepped up with a new model
this year. It's now called the M series and it's
got excuse me, all new excuse me, all new furniture
and council design. And they've brought the new glass dash
called the Vivid and it is simplistic operation. It is
(10:19):
absolutely incredible with all the control that you can see
with your engine and boat systems, even right down to
electronic switching to control all your lights and navigation and
all that kind of great stuff. So that's incredible. Also,
the new Express X twenty one Pro.
Speaker 7 (10:38):
This boat is completely.
Speaker 9 (10:39):
Set up, dual power poles, networked electronics, full seed deck,
Mocha interior. This thing is on a custom trailer with
custom alloy aluminum wheels. This boat might be too nice
to fish out of. That's even possible.
Speaker 10 (10:56):
I don't know.
Speaker 9 (10:57):
But some of the things that will be splaying Alumacraft,
smoker Craft, Benington An Express, come see us at the Expo,
all powered by Yamaha Outboards, great promotions. Yamaha's got seven
year engine warranties Alluma Craft. You're gonna be able to
save instantly up to seventy five dollars on a new
(11:18):
allumic Craft boat package. So lots of great stuff.
Speaker 7 (11:22):
There's there's no.
Speaker 9 (11:22):
Reason not to come down and see us at the
ex Bow this year.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
Andy, Are there any extended factory warranties on boats right now?
Boats or motor.
Speaker 9 (11:31):
Yes, So Allumicicraft is I'm sorry, Yamaha is extending their
their normal three year warranty up to seven years this year.
Speaker 7 (11:42):
So that's that's.
Speaker 9 (11:43):
An incredible value to get top to bottom full on
no deductible warranty coverage direct from Yamaha. It's not a
third party warranty company or any deductibles or anything. It
is top to bottom one hundred percent warranty for up
to seven years.
Speaker 7 (12:04):
Great value.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Well, the motors today, the Yamhauser like bulletproof. There's just
not much that goes wrong with minimum amount of maintenance.
So they've gotten amazing.
Speaker 9 (12:14):
Yes, the outboard, all the technologies come so so far
that turnkey starting EFI you just have to add water
and go, no worries whatsoever.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
Now, if someone buys a boat from Don Greene, are
you able to take a test drive with them or
get the angler started on the water and explain stuff
to them.
Speaker 9 (12:34):
Absolutely, our grapa Don back in nineteen thirty six. It
was one of his founding pillars was to service service,
service to the customer. So we will spend as much
time with the consumer. If they're new to boating, or
even if they're familiar with boating and this is not
(12:56):
their first boat, we will spend as much time getting
them familiar, answering all of their questions from the boat
to the engine, to the trailer, what kind of maintenance
and service. Just spend whatever time we need to so
that that customer, that new boat owner, is one hundred
percent happy and comfortable with their purchase.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
Folks, we've been visiting with Andy Mankey stop by the
Wisconsin Phishing Expo, coming up here and climbing some of
these new boats. You'll be amazed at what they're doing now.
And how can people reach you if they'd like to
call the shop?
Speaker 9 (13:32):
Well, very simply, we've got lots of ways to contact us.
You can call us or even text to our same
phone number which is six zero eight five ninety two
four seven zero five caller text.
Speaker 7 (13:47):
Also reach us.
Speaker 9 (13:48):
On the web at Donsmarine dot com and you could
also reach us through Facebook or Instagram or other social
media sources.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
Fantastic. Well, Andy, have a great day and thanks for
taking some time out for us. Welcome back, folks. It's
the Captain and the Wild Dog here at the Wisconsin
Fishing Expo, one of the best shows in the entire Midwest.
So much fun things going on. We should thank Andy Mankey,
owner of Don's Marine for his interview and stop him
by Encinas Captain.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
Hey, well, you know I mentioned a little bit earlier
about the amount of seminars going on. I know there's
close to twenty five seminars. Actually I will be MC
in those seminars, so it's always fun to get to
see everybody. And you know, Wally, one of the questions
I always ask when i'm MC and those is how
many new people are here at the show this weekend.
It's like fifty percent, So that shows you that advertising works.
(14:40):
Dan does a fantastic job of covering the advertising aspect
and bringing in new people. It's always fun to see
if people are coming back, it's new people. But actually,
with the seminars I was talking about, I would suggest
go to the website. There is just a full load
of those walleye bass guy. There's even a gal that's
(15:01):
going to do a fly fishing seminar, some leaders in
the industry for muskie walleye bass. So it's pretty cool.
And I mentioned earlier Tom Win and I gotta tell you, folks,
if you're coming to Tom Wins Electronics seminar, bring a
notepad because it's fun to write all those notes. Get
in your boat set to do the settings on your
(15:21):
forward facing and everything just pops. He is one of
the best seminar speakers on electronics in the country. So hey,
let's chat with Tom see what he has to say.
Speaker 11 (15:36):

Speaker 2 (17:39):
Here's two guys that get up so early they wait
to burns.
Speaker 4 (17:42):
You're listening exaltsmate on to ours radio.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
Hey, welcome back, folks, and thanks for listening. We are
here at the Wisconsin Fishing expot at the Alliant Energy
Center in Madison, Wisconsin. Captain, what an amazing show this is, eh.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
Wally All was good to be here, that's for sure.
And you know, at the beginning of the one hour
show here we mentioned about tickets, but general mission twelve bucks.
Yet that has a two day pass for twenty bucks,
which is nice. I would say purchase ahead because it
does seem like you can get in the show a
little quicker if you've got those tickets purchased ahead of time.
(18:19):
But also there's going to be a full lineup of
kids events, which I'm going to probably cover in the
next segment, And we always encourage parents to get those
kids off the couch because they can come out here,
they can catch trout, they can get their faces painted.
It's all sorts of good. I'll expand a little bit
on that, but coming up, we're gonna have one of
(18:40):
our seminar speakers, which I mentioned, Tom Winn probably the
best electronics seminar speaker in the country, and I can
guarantee you're going to learn something. Your electronics will work
better when you walk out the door. And he's the
kind of guy that will stay there and chat with you.
He also has a school available where you can book
a day in the boat with him, and you just
(19:00):
need to stop over and chat with him. So let's
see what Tom has to say about the latest and
greatest in the electronics world. Most of us in the
fishing world kind of call him the Guru of forward
facing sonar? Would that be a good title? Tom?
Speaker 14 (19:14):
Hey, you know it might be. I've got it dialed in.
Speaker 4 (19:17):
I think yes, yes you do. So, Tom, you for
people that don't know you, but anybody that's fitched against
you or does follow the tournament trail knows you very well.
But am I right? You kind of started out in
the tournament world as a bass fisherman, is that correct?
And that kind of turned to walleye.
Speaker 14 (19:38):
Yeah, fishing for you know, bass in the tournaments with
the using minimal electronics. And whenever I switched to walleye
is when ford facing sonar was brand new.
Speaker 4 (19:50):
Yeah, and I probably put you on the spots, Tom,
I was looking at little of your history. Do you
do you know how many wins now? And was this
about seven years ago that you kind of switched over
to walleye?
Speaker 6 (20:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 14 (20:02):
Around in there it was around well, no, so it
was twenty twenty twenty.
Speaker 5 (20:09):
Yeah, if I.
Speaker 4 (20:10):
Put you on the spot, how many wins have you
had since since you started fishing walleye? There was a lot.
I couldn't keep track of all the finishes.
Speaker 14 (20:20):
I think for wind it was six or seven at least,
and then and then probably seventeen eighteen top tens.
Speaker 4 (20:30):
Yeah, and we're talking the major walleye tournament circuits in
the in the United States here too, So that's that's
pretty good. But you gained a lot of respect in
the respect and this is what you're doing at the
Fishing Expo. Also is a seminar on forward facing sonar.
So Tom, I guess we got I'll ask you your
(20:52):
forward facing sonar? Are you which products do you run?
Speaker 14 (20:56):
I run garment, I run the garment lifecote.
Speaker 4 (20:58):
Okay, yeah, and I got I know you were at
the Fishing ex Bowl last year, and I guess my
opinion would be even if you don't run the garment.
I sat through your seminar, Tom, and I would suggest
bringing some paper in a pen because a lot of
the stuff you talk about will work for any other
brand out there. And I and then you just put
(21:19):
it in your boat and you go play with it.
And I learned a lot. So let's you got about
three minutes lefter. Let's tell the people what your seminar
is going to be about. At the Wisconsin Fishing ex
Bole February twenty one, twenty three.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
Tom.
Speaker 14 (21:33):
Yeah, so, just like you said, last year, I came
and did some seminars and it does cover every brand. Really,
the technology is really relatively the same among the brands,
so you're going to learn a lot. But last year,
I just I did the seminar, was just speaking and
basically painting a picture in people's mind of what they
(21:53):
were looking at on their electronics, and it went over
extremely well. This year, I'm going to be showing a
lot of high definition screen recording that I'm pulling from
my university that I just launched back in September, and
so I'm going to be pulling a lot of that
information from a university to show you how to dictate
(22:17):
species of fish. How to differentiate one fish from the other,
how to tell their size, and more importantly, what settings
that you can use all year long without having to
go in there and keep readjusting all the time.
Speaker 4 (22:29):
Yeah, And I was pretty amazed because I did follow you,
like on your Winnebagel tournament. You got to the point
where you said, I could actually tell what species of
fish it is, And I think that just comes from
spending time on that. So, Tom, you're fishing university. We
got a couple of minutes. Let's tell the folks about that,
because really you have a course where you'll walk people
(22:51):
right through and it's pretty extensive. Tell us a little
bit about that, how much it costs, and some of
the details.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
Tom.
Speaker 14 (22:58):
Yeah, so there's a lot of information there. So you know,
in the last few years, like you said, you rut
it up, I have done well in tournaments, me and
my teammate and eate, and so I would be getting
messages through social media quite a bit like Tom, I'll
pay one thousand dollars, I'll pay fifteen hundred dollars to
take me out for a day of fishing.
Speaker 7 (23:16):
But what happens.
Speaker 14 (23:17):
Yeah, I would get that all the time. But then
what happens is when somebody goes out fishing with me
for eight ten hours a day, where there's just so
many little details that are forgotten. And then so I
came up with the idea to come up with a Basically,
it's almost like a virtual guideboat and it's a curriculum
based deals that you can go on first curriculum based
(23:39):
fishing education, and it's web based. It's fishtchu dot com
and it literally shows you shows people everything that I'm
doing at all times.
Speaker 4 (23:48):
Yeah, and we should mention the course cost is that
two hundred and seventy five seventy nine.
Speaker 14 (23:53):
Dollars yep to seventy nine And people who come to
my seminars will you know, get get a discount code
to say quite a bit off of that.
Speaker 2 (24:02):
Captain the Wisconsin fishingex Boy has been a lot of
fun over the years. This is the fortieth anniversary. Over
twenty thousand people attend. And that Tom Winn. He's quite
a talent, isn't he.
Speaker 4 (24:13):
He is one smart dude with electronics. Besides Todd, we
have a pretty impressive lineup of seminar speakers. Tommy Kimos
is going to be here professional this is the NWT.
Always talks about electronics and all his tactics. He's always
available for questions. And we're bringing back Ish Munroe and
I'm guessing most of you recognize his name. Professional bass
(24:37):
fisherman and he is fishing a new circuit this year.
When I chatted with Ish basically told us what that
was all about. Fifty thousand dollars prize package for that.
Larry Smith TV media guy. Everyone knows Larry. He's going
to be here to talk about the Bago Chain and
some of his experience. He was recently on a whitefish
(25:00):
trawling adventure. I see on his show Local Guys. Justin
Snyder on Win a Bagel. That's always a good one.
You want to learn about bagel, Adam Walter, about the
Madison Lakes. Steve Herbeck, the legend. Steve Hrbeck will be
talking muskies. And we have a fly fishing gallic year
Donna Smith. So that's good Wally, and you interviewed Larry Smith.
Speaker 2 (25:21):
Yep, Larry Smith will be coming up next. What a talent.
He both guides for ice fishing and open water, so
stay tuned. Joining us next is a great outdoorsman, Larry
Host and owns a terrific year round television show called
Larry Smith Outdoors. Larry is also a fishing guide from Berlin, Wisconsin.
He guys for both open water and hard water fishing.
(25:42):
Is also a featured seminar speaker and fishing educator at
sports shows all over the Midwest. Larry Smith, Welcome to
the show.
Speaker 8 (25:50):
Hey, Wally, what an awesome day it is. You know,
it's one of them yours that we haven't seen in
about three or four years.
Speaker 5 (25:56):
We got about.
Speaker 8 (25:57):
Eighteen to twenty inches of ice out here on Lake
win Abagel and things are really going good. We had
a little bit of warm weather over the weekend, but
the clubs put the bridges back out on our end salt.
They're having a little bit of issues down there because
you know, there's no snow this year on this ice,
and even having eighteen to twenty inches of ice, when
(26:20):
you get them warm days and obviously our days have
become a little bit longer, and that sun is out,
it really penetrates that that ice and that shallow water
and starts warming up that water from underneath. And I'll
tell you what, it's amazing the damage that can be
done in three or four days. But out on our
end we're west of Oshcar or east of Oscosh fishing
out here we got excellent conditions and the fishing's really
(26:43):
been good. Perch, walleyes, white bass, a few scattered crappies.
But it's this system is you know, it's the largest
inland lake in the state here, Lake Winnebagel, and it's
definitely in its prime as far as and I mean
by that, our populations of perch and walleyes are at
a high right now for sure.
Speaker 2 (27:01):
So Larry, I know you're on the ice right now.
And my friend Tony Grabski was out with you last week,
nine guys. They caught over one hundred and eighty perch
and said it was just fantastic. So so that condition
good and you put.
Speaker 8 (27:16):
Yeah, I don't like to I don't like to over
sell things. I mean, that was an exceptional day. The
next day we went out, I think we had fifty seven.
You know, every day is different, Wally. You know that's
the thing about ice guiding. It's a little bit different
than open water guiding. I mean, obviously you're a little
bit more limited. You can't move as many times, and
(27:36):
and the fish are you know, obviously the fronts are
just tremendous in this time of year, and the fish
do not have to feed every day, real heavy, and
so I kind of always like to undersell everything and
keep people's expectations down. You know, I've been guiding full
time for thirty four years this this year, and ice
fishing is definitely my my cup of tea. I love it,
(27:58):
I love the challenges. I've had a lot of different
situations on the ice, and it's just, you know that
it's always that kind of that battle with mother nature,
trying to respect her tremendously, but yet to try to
try to conquer things, and ice fishing is definitely that
that thing that you like. You know, we just did
(28:19):
a video on all the different ice vehicles that I have,
and I mean I've got everything from you know, to
multiple snowmobiles and multiple four wheelers, to airboats, to track trucks,
to suburbans with holes cut in them for fishing out of,
to air boats. You know, it's just you have to
(28:39):
have that nowadays because again, our winners have changed so much.
We don't get them big Arctic blasts and they don't
hang in there that long at all. You know, it's
kind of interesting. I just came back from a trip
up at Saint Paul Island.
Speaker 7 (28:54):
It's one of the.
Speaker 8 (28:54):
Closest islands to Russia up in Alaska. It's up on
the Illusions, and I was talking to the natives there,
and that was the coolest part about the trip. You know,
these people that live on this there's not one single
tree on this island, and there's about maybe two hundred
natives that live there, That's what I'm speculating. But anyways, nice,
great people and brought back some really cool things. But
(29:15):
they were even telling me the last twenty years how
it's changed where they don't get that severe cold weather
anymore even there, So you kind of wonder what's going on.
I'm not a big global warming guy at all. I
think God created the earth here and he knows exactly
what was going to happen and what's happening. But you know,
it's I think we're into a cycle, and it'd be
(29:37):
interesting to see how many years it's gonna take. Hopefully
I'm still around to see this cycle kind of reverse
itself and go back the other way.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
Oh when you see Eskimo was wearing shorts, you know
if something's going on.
Speaker 8 (29:49):
Well, and I no offense to the Eskimo population, but
I've seen them with shorts on before and their legs
look just like mine, more like chicken legs.
Speaker 7 (30:00):
Right.
Speaker 8 (30:00):
So that's that's one thing I have in common with
the Eskimo is we don't wear shorts too often.
Speaker 7 (30:05):
Right.
Speaker 2 (30:06):
So, Larry, you're going to be a featured speaker at
the fortieth Annual Wisconsin Fishing X But what is your topic?
We just got about a minute.
Speaker 8 (30:13):
Well, I'll tell you what that is. Probably that is,
no doubt Wisconsin's number one fishing ex bowl for open
water and it's on February twenty first till the twenty
third at the Madison Expo Center. Is just a great,
tremendous place. I'm going to be talking about a bunch
of different topics like I always do, I kind of
(30:34):
you know, when I get into a summinar, I lay
it out as one topic, but halfway through there, I
like to basically ask people what they want to know?
What do they want to learn?
Speaker 7 (30:44):
You know?
Speaker 8 (30:44):
And that's the part I love about the outdoors is
because you know, even a guy like me that's been
guiding thirty four years full time, spend over three hundred
days a year on the water. You're constantly learning all
the time. And you know, I do the show and
I do what I do in a b because I'm
myself right. I never wanted to become famous off of
(31:04):
any of this stuff or popular. It's all about trying
to create a positive atmosphere to get more people involved
in the outdoors. Because what the outdoors has done for
my own life, if I can just transfer that and
lead that into other people, it's just a great experience.
And you know that's the cool part about the seminars
(31:26):
is basically teaching and educating people so they have more
confidence in what they're doing.
Speaker 2 (31:31):
Welcome back to Captain and Waldog. Here we're out at
the Wisconsin Fishing Expo. Captain, if you fish, you've got
to come out here. There's everything in the fishing world
available here.
Speaker 4 (31:41):
Absolutely good interview by Larry Smith. And you know, like
we mentioned, the best thing is to go to the website.
Three hundred and fifty exhibitors. It's mind boggling. And if
you guys are stumped on lithium batteries, I see ant
battery local Wisconsin companies here a lot of questions on
social media about that, while you know, coming after the break,
(32:02):
it's always fun to have Ishman rollback, and I chatted
with him a little bit about, you know, what his
future is, and you know, he's I've actually covered him
when the bass Master was in Lacrosse there a couple
of times, and he's kind of a top water guy.
And I did ask him, you know, what was one
of the worst experiences in your fishing career, And basically
(32:28):
he had a pretty good answer of the one tournament
he fished where he was in the bass master, then
he was out of the bass master, then he was
in the bass master, depending on how many fish he caught.
So he's always a good guy, good guy to listen to,
that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (32:43):
Did he win one of the events in Lacrosse. I
believe yes, I.
Speaker 12 (32:46):
Believe he did.
Speaker 4 (32:47):
Yeah, I Wally, I don't know. I've covered so many
I kind of forget. So coming up Ishman Rolle, We're
gonna chat with him and so stay with us. Folks
were out here at the Wisconsin Fishing Expo.
Speaker 10 (33:01):

to Ultimate out Tours Radio. Let's get back to the
Captain and the Waldog.
Speaker 2 (34:29):
Hey, welcome back, folks. We are at the Wisconsin Fishing
Expo with a ton of exciting stuff going on today
and tomorrow. Captain, what do you got?
Speaker 4 (34:38):
Well? Ishmun Roll is going to join us while in
you know, fun to talk to somebody that fishes for
a living, travels the country. And I had a chance
to kind of pick Issue's brain on thoughts on you know,
it sounds like he's basically going to be fishing a
trail down in the Texas area. Sounds like it's a
(34:58):
new trail, don't. I've never heard of it. I forget
to actually forget the name of it now. But so
he's going to be doing that. But boy, talk about
just a great guy to have it a seminar and
he takes time to chat with you and I did.
I did have a chance, Wally to ask him his
thoughts on you know, no one wants to commit to
(35:18):
an answer on forward facing sonar, whether it should be
legal or whether it shouldn't. But uh answered it well,
and you know that will be a controversy. I actually
heard Minnesota might ban it. I don't know if that's
a rumor, but that was out there.
Speaker 2 (35:34):
So I think they'll ban it in tournaments possibly, But
to the general public that's gonna be tough.
Speaker 5 (35:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (35:40):
I'd be like saying, you can't use a V eight
motor in a truck.
Speaker 5 (35:43):
Yeah, so I would.
Speaker 4 (35:44):
I would head to the website check out ishmann rolls
seminar times. He had two of them. So let's chat
with Ish and see what he has to say. Good morning, Ish, Good.
Speaker 5 (35:53):
Morning, how are you.
Speaker 4 (35:54):
We're doing great? Hey, really nice you to come back again.
I know, I think it was two years or something.
Real a lot of people excited to see you and
come to the seminar. So before we get into the seminar, Ish, so,
what what are your goals and what are you fishing
this year for chasing bass? What tournament search.
Speaker 7 (36:15):
I'll fishing the baths Open Division one, which is that
central division that's going to slide basically from Texas all
the way up to Minnesota fishing the BAM Super sixty,
which is a new tour that's out here out west.
Sixty guys first place fifty thousand dollars, and then they
also have a pro am division and then I'll be
(36:37):
fishing some team tournaments and some wand baths. So I
got a pretty full schedule next year, including doing a
bunch of seminars all over the country.
Speaker 4 (36:47):
So where did the BAM so called BAM Pro Tour
come from?
Speaker 2 (36:51):
Ish?
Speaker 7 (36:53):
So, we used to have a circuit called wild West
out here and it kind of went away, and so
Mark was saying Bass Angler Magazine decided that he wanted
to do something for the guys out west and make
a tour that you know, paid really well and highlighted
the best fishermen in the West.
Speaker 4 (37:15):
And then so that was an invite for sixty sixty guys.
Is that what it was.
Speaker 7 (37:20):
Yeah, So we had the we had the pro tour
last year, which was invitation, and then this year it
was invitation also qualification from his pro ams from last year.
Speaker 4 (37:31):
Gotcha. Yeah, just you know, I happened to be running
through your bio. I see you fished. I'll just run
some numbers for our listeners, two hundred and sixty three tournament,
ten Classic appearances, twenty nine times you were in the
money Man Top thirty eighty seven times Top twenty fifty eight.
But I have to ask you, is you get the
(37:53):
fish all over the US? Do you have favorites? Would
you rather fish the South or the North or what's
your thoughts?
Speaker 7 (38:01):
Oh, man, I have to pick either the North or
the West. We have clear Lake out here. But I
heard you mentioned Green Bay and I am a huge
fan of Green Bay.
Speaker 5 (38:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (38:15):
Yeah, there's a couple big ones in there. Well, yes, yeah,
speaking of big bass. You're doing a seminar at Wisconsin
Fishing Expo February twenty one, twenty two, twenty three for
our listeners, what are you going to be covering at
your two seminars one on Saturday and one on Sunday.
What are you going to be covering?
Speaker 9 (38:32):
Is?
Speaker 7 (38:32):
Well, we're going to be covering basically some some stories
about the tour, funny stories. I mean, you know, I've
been fishing tour for a long time, and so I've
roomed with Ike and John Cruise, and obviously, you know,
with the three of us, there's obviously going to be
some funny and some great stories to tell, and you
know we're going to kind of get it. If you
feel it, you fish it, you know. And I think
(38:55):
one of the biggest mistakes most anglers make is if
they don't go with their gut feet feeling on things.
And probably your gut feeling is probably your first and
best choice.
Speaker 4 (39:07):
Yeah, And as any tournament fisherman knows, your gut feeling
change is an awful lot. Should I stay, Should I go?
What the heck should I do?
Speaker 5 (39:16):
So?
Speaker 4 (39:17):
Hey, ish any thoughts on the and I know this
is a broad subject, but any thoughts on the forward
facing Most of the tournament's still running the forward facing gear.
Speaker 7 (39:29):
You know, I think that it's it's become a it's
very controversial. And you know, I'm a Laurance active target
guy and I used it to fish a tournament just
basically a couple of days ago, and it, I mean
I caught forty to fifty fish a day with it,
(39:50):
And you know, I didn't catch any big ones, but
I caught a lot of fish. And it helps me
to understand fish. I mean, having it and not having it.
I kind of like it's the old ways of fishing,
but I also am embracing the fact that active target
is definitely a tool that everybody needs to have.
Speaker 4 (40:09):
Yeah, I think you use a good word, embracing it.
We got a little less than a minute. I have
to ask you, looking back at your career, is there
one thing that pops out that Alwa stays in your mind?
Whatever it may be. You fished a lot of areas.
Speaker 5 (40:26):
I'd have to.
Speaker 7 (40:27):
Say Sturgeon Bay missing the Classic bracket format stands out
to me because that was a really, really bad deal.
I was in the Classic one day, out of the Classic,
in the Classic, and then out of the Classic again
and probably one of the most emotional times I've ever had.
Speaker 5 (40:46):
But a great utry.
Speaker 2 (40:48):
Welcome back, folks, thanks for listening. This is the wall
Dog along with Captain at the Wisconsin Fishing Expo. A
ton of things to do. I would here if you
want to meet Ishman Roe, hang out by the diwab Boothy.
He's sponsored by DIALWA and he spends a lot of
his time there and you're able to meet him. He's
a pretty incredible angler. Captain.
Speaker 4 (41:06):
Yeah, before we get into our next guest, Wally, we
haven't covered much on all the kids' activities, and Wally,
I think you and I should be able to participate
against some of these kids. You know. The neat thing
is they can come out and catch a trout in
the trout pond and if you've never watched that, I
call it a circus. But the kids are just having
(41:26):
a ball when they get a fish on and they
can take the fish home. Always fun to see kids
carrying a fish in a bag. You can get a
free prize for completing your fish Bengo card which you
can get information on that when you come in the door.
You can teach your kids how to cast in a
casting area. Also, Wally, this is the one we should
be doing. That's ride the bumper boats against those kids.
(41:48):
You know. That's so I mean, you got to get
your kids out here and get them interested in the outdoors.
And there is the Mento races which is always kind
of fun too. So yeah, a lot of kids stuff
going on. Get them off the couch, get them out here.
Speaker 5 (42:02):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (42:02):
There's balloon artists and casting competitions and kids twelve and
under are free at the Wisconsin Fishing Spo, So bring
them out.
Speaker 4 (42:10):
We're doing a one hour show. We're gonna close it
out with Don Kirby and then Wally and I'll chat
about some history and so on. So here's Don.
Speaker 2 (42:18):
Joining us next. Is a great outdoorsman. Don loves spending
time outdoors and doesn't mind waking up in the marsh
or in his boat. Don loves catching big bass and
big walleyes. Don also works for Bass Durbin Advertising and
is the booth chairman for the Wisconsin Fishing Expo coming up,
Don Kirby, Welcome to the show.
Speaker 5 (42:37):
Hey, good morning, Thanks for having me.
Speaker 2 (42:39):
Don. What are the dates and location for this year's
Wisconsin Fishing Expo?
Speaker 5 (42:45):
It is the twenty first, twenty second, and twenty third,
the last weekend in February.
Speaker 2 (42:50):
And how many booths are there and how many seminars
do you have lined up?
Speaker 5 (42:54):
You know, it's pretty incredible. Every year it seems I
can find a couple more spots in that big allion expo.
Speaker 8 (42:59):
All.
Speaker 5 (43:00):
By my last count, I have three hundred and fifty
nine exhibit spaces populated by more than two hundred and
thirteen vendors. And when you asked, I did a quick count.
Looks like we've got more than twenty seven seminar sessions
as well.
Speaker 2 (43:14):
Wow, the show has just grown and grown. It's time
perfect and people really have the cabin fever one and
get to that show. How many years has it been going, you.
Speaker 5 (43:25):
Know, between the original the Madison Fishing Expo and then
the transformation ten years ago to the Wisconsin Fishing Expo.
This is the fortieth anniversary. Kind of an exciting milestone
for an event like this.
Speaker 2 (43:38):
Well, I went to the first show and there was
one boat on display there. How many boats do you
think you'll have it this year's Wisconsin Fishing Expo?
Speaker 5 (43:47):
Oh my gosh. Well, we've got, by my last count,
either twelve or thirteen different dealers and or manufacturers. And
then several of those dealers were bring two or three
different marks, So I'm confident that you could expect to
see more than twenty different brands of boats from you know,
from little rigs all the way up to big rigs
and everything in between. It it really if you're a
(44:09):
person shopping for a boat, I can't think of a
better place to come and look at the whole breadth
and depth of what's available out there in the marine
industry right now than than a show like this.
Speaker 2 (44:19):
Well, it's really fun because you can have a list
and go dealer to dealer, climb in each boat, see
how they handle, where the locators mount trolling motors, how
big are the decks storage, So you know, it's so
easy to compare a boat to boat all in one place.
It's a great place to buy a boat.
Speaker 5 (44:35):
Yeah, you're absolutely right. It is a unique opportunity in
that way, and to be able to talk to the
dealers and see what sort of an arrangement you can make,
you know how long an order might take. All of
that good stuff. It definitely is a great place to
come look for a boat.
Speaker 2 (44:50):
There's a lot of family activities going on at the expot.
What are some of the things that you guys have
lined up?
Speaker 5 (44:55):
Oh my gosh, Yeah, it seems like that's another area
that we had a little bit every year. Of course,
you you've got the Wisconsin Bass Federation Kids Casting Contest,
you've got the live fishing action of the Trout Pond,
We've got a kid's bowl fishing opportunity, you've got the
bumper boats that we brought in a few years ago
that people just love. And then of course you've got
this incredible kids fish bingal. Families can go around, see
(45:18):
the whole expo, get a few stamps on a card,
turn it into the Slinger Fishing Club and win a
free prize bag that will include a lure and a
sticker and a bunch of fun stuff. And that's all
free for kids twelve and under the first five hundred
families each day.
Speaker 2 (45:31):
Oh, there's so many great vendors there too. A lot
of dealers are offering sale prices on stuff they've got
the latest and rods and reels. In the quality of
gear available there is second to none.
Speaker 5 (45:44):
Absolutely. You know, we've got some of the manufacturers here
that are supporting retailers with special promotions during the event.
And this year, once again we were able to find
some really unique vendors, folks that may not have a
storefront at all, so if you don't bump into them
on the internet, you might get to experience or see
what they're offering. We love to bring partners in like
that because when you bring them all together, then under
(46:06):
one roof, you have this ability to have this amazing
shopping experience and see what's new and innovative out there
without you know, only having to go to one place.
Speaker 2 (46:15):
Well, and a lot of your seminar speakers are pros
and well traveled make their living in the industry. After seminars,
you have a chance to visit in the boots with
some of these pros. I always thought that was cool.
Speaker 5 (46:26):
Absolutely. I always suggest to people when you're planning your
visit to the expo, take a look at our seminars
page on the website first, because you may want to
plan your visit around a time when a certain person
is going to be there. We've got seminars literally from
every topic related to fishing that you can possibly imagine,
and so you definitely want to plan your trip around
those opportunities well.
Speaker 2 (46:46):
And there's a lot of guides available. You can book trips,
there's resorts, there's all kinds of stuff like that.
Speaker 5 (46:52):
Absolutely, tourism is a big part of the show. I
would guess somewhere more than twenty or twenty five percent
of all of the boosts are either guides that are
available to take you and teach you fishing or to
your point places that you could go not only here
in the US from a number of states, but then
also Canada as well.
Speaker 2 (47:09):
I'm don if people want to learn more, do you
have a good website with all the details.
Speaker 5 (47:15):
Absolutely jump into Wifishingexpo dot com and you'll see everything
in there to help you guide your trip to join us.
Speaker 2 (47:23):
Fantastic. Well, Don, thanks for taking time out and look
forward to seeing you at the show.
Speaker 5 (47:27):
That sounds great. Thanks well.
Speaker 2 (47:29):

quick place to get in and get out, which is nice.
Plenty of parking. They do charge for parking, but that's
kind of seems to be the scoop. With all the show,
I'd like to thank Don Kirby covered a lot of
the details once again. A few other things here. A
(48:05):
few of the questions that pop up to us all
the time. Is the show handicapped accessible? Absolutely? Most vendor
all the vendors really take credit and debit cards at
the show. There's some ATMs here, Wally. If you buy
too much fishing stuff, you can go get some more money,
but you need to stay with us, folks. After the break,
(48:28):
Wally and I have a huge announcement regarding Ultimate Outdoors
Radio and our little teaser is going to be that.
The teasers. We're hanging up the headsets and Wally and
I will talk about that and the close of the show.
So once again, good to be here, Good to see everyone.

Baffie along with Captain Terry Fry.
Speaker 4 (51:33):
Hey, good marn everyone out there in the outdoor world
at the Wisconsin Fishing Expo once again, but you know
we want to look back before we close this show out.
Wally was on the ground floor of this was Madison,
Wisconsin Fishing Expo, which was the original name Wally. How
about filling the folks in a little history on the
Madison Fishing Expo, which is now the Wisconsin Fishing Expo.
Speaker 2 (51:55):
Well, Captain, the idea of a sports show in Madison
area originated at Mino A Bait and Tackle, which is
owned by Doug Ruter. At the time, this is like
forty years ago, righty oh, and so Jim Peterson hung
out at the shop a lot Steve Hauge and others
and asked if I might want to help get a
show started. Bob Newton was a factor and Nick Myers
(52:16):
and the first show Captain forty years ago had ten
booths and one boat. Now you take a look at it,
there's over three hundred and fifty booths and over twenty
thousand people. At ten can there's over one hundred and
twenty five boats on display. So Madison needed a show
like this, and now it's just amazing. It's one of
the best in the entire country.
Speaker 4 (52:38):
Yeah, Wally, and thanks for Wisconsin Fishing Expo for jumping
on board keeping this thing going. Money goes back into
the end of the lakes out here, and so it's
it's fun that it's continued on. Well, Wally, we need
to inform people about our huge announcements, and folks, you
are probably listening to the last six minutes of radio
(52:59):
that w and I will be on. Wally and I
have decided we woke up in the middle of the
night and decided to close the show down.
Speaker 2 (53:06):
So well, we're hanging up the headsets. Captain, you're the
one that woke up at the three thirty am and
idea said, hey man, it's time to go fishing. We
have had a great run. You know, we've interviewed over
fifteen hundred people, Captain, We've had live broadcast all over
the state, tremendous kids fishing events. It's Captain, it's been
(53:26):
a tremendous amount of fun.
Speaker 4 (53:28):
Absolutely, and you know, we want to mention the only
you know, radio is not cheap. We purchased our airtime
and you know, we we grabbed, luckily grabbed a whold
of a station which was iHeartRadio. And just for some
numbers here, folks, in twenty nineteen estimated listening audience was
one hundred and twenty eight million people. That you know,
(53:49):
we potentially could have got a message out to plus
thirty million people on podcasts estimated. So pretty cool that
we had a chance to get on iHeart Radio. It's
nice when we're interviewing people all over the world basically
that they can sit down and listen to it on
a Saturday morning. And Wally numerous media and photography awards
(54:12):
over the fifteen years. That was always fun. Winning a
few of those I remember well and people can go
to the website and see the one picture and actually
Ben Yatt is in that picture with us with a
bunch of our awards standing in front of the studio.
And need to thank Ben for thirteen years of keeping us,
you know, on the straight and arrow, as they say.
Speaker 2 (54:34):
And also Dave McCann who's helped fill in the blinks
there and does a great job as a producer. Also
thanks to all our listeners over the years. It's so
fun to meet a lot of you at the sports
shows and at Wilderness Fishing Game where I work captain
people that listen every Saturday. It's part of their Saturday.
Speaker 4 (54:52):
Yeah, and our podcast hopefully will keep those up for
a little while. Do need to mention that our Facebook
page is going to stay active. Wally's going to be
guiding like twenty two hours a day.
Speaker 2 (55:06):
Yes, I have a lot of outings going and folks.
You can still reach me at Wilderness Fishing Game in
Sauk City, which I am now part time captain.
Speaker 4 (55:13):
Yeah, and so people say, we're you going to do
YouTube and said, no, we must be doing radio. So
now we had a profitable run thanks to all our sponsors,
and that was good. But you know, one thing I'm
going to mention here before we get out of here,
and you know, basically it's Wally and I talked about
this about introducing kids to the outdoors and the smiles
(55:35):
on their faces and especially when they have a fish on.
But our website will be closed down at the end
of February, and today the twenty second is our last show.
And you know, we sure appreciate making friends with everybody well.
Speaker 2 (55:52):
And also we got to thank all of our sponsors
over the years. We had twenty eight sponsor partners for
a half hour radio program, which is pretty incredible in
our industry. Just to mention a few of the Vortex Optics,
Cleary Building Corp, Middleton Ford, Wilderness Fish and Game Captain.
There's so many more good ones.
Speaker 4 (56:09):
Yeah, Wally, I believe we did seven hundred and fifty shows,
with a few of those being live Madison and the
Dells and so on. But before I get out of here, Wally,
I had some thoughts looking back over it, And my
thoughts came from driving out west this year and I
was listening to a Toby Keith song and the name
(56:30):
of the song was Don't Let the Old Man In. Yeah,
And that's basically what Wally and I are doing. So
if you see us, we'll probably have the throttle on
the merchs buried as far as we can and keep
We're going to keep pushing harder because you know, as
they say, don't let the old man in, and you
know you can't sit there on the couch, and you
(56:51):
know you might kick the bucket. But we got a
lot of things we want to do. I got a
couple elk hunts schedule the Arizona that i'd apply for
twenty one years, which i'll be out there for three years,
probably when I draw. But here's a one liner in
that song, Wallly, and I know you've listened to the song, yeah,
and he says, how old do you think you are
(57:14):
if you did not know the day you were born?
So if you think about that, yeah, you think about that?
Do I feel like maybe I'm seventy. No, I don't know.
I'm still climbing trees and stuff. And we both have
a lot of stuff we want to do, and we're
just going to get freed up, and we'll still be
floating around. Follow us on Facebook and we'll be pup.
Speaker 6 (57:37):
He's knocking on.
Speaker 7 (57:43):
All of.
Speaker 1 (57:47):
That's someday, moony g ups. Don't let the old man. Yeah,
any moons I have lived, my body is weathered in warm.
(58:12):
Just ask yourself, how old?
Speaker 12 (58:14):
What you mean
