a Network studio. This is matt Leapey. We welcome you
to Wisconsin basketball. Welcome to semi finals Saturday in this
Big Ten Conference tournament. The Badgers in it for the
second straight year. Last year it was an overtime classic

in defeating Purdue. Today, the Badgers square off with the
Michigan State Spartans. And before we get things rolling, let's
pause ten seconds for station identification ten for an ID.

Began on Thursday with a seventy two to sixty four
win against Northwestern, and then yes or excuse me, a

seventy to sixty three win against Northwestern, and then yesterday,
Butchie the Badgers were raining threes early and often nineteen
out of thirty two as the Badgers dropped the hammer
on UCLA eighty six to seventy. So, uh, there's a

this game. Last game in the East Lansing, Michigan State,
on any pick and roll that Wisconsin had, guards normally
are pulled into the paint. Against Wisconsin, they stayed attached
to three point shooters, which means there is going to
be a lot of room in the paint if.

So I think that's one thing early on in this
game to realize that Michigan State they're gonna try to
take away that three point life.

Yeah, john Tonjay, who was six or six from three yesterday,
was one of eight from three against Michigan State. But
there was a lot of company there and firing blanks
in that game. Tanjay, coming off the twenty six point
nine rebound performance u SEELA coach McK cronin tell in
the media yesterday that that's his player of the year. Yes, yes,

that's who he voted for. Let's I can see why
he would because Tanjay hit him for twelve threes and
thirteen shots in the two games. And efficiency right there
exactly all the Spartans won the Big Ten regular season outright,
and they did so Brian with just tremendous work. It
was one quad one win after another. I was one

of those going okay, halfway, great start, backloaded schedule, and
they just found ways to get it done. They have
played terrific basketball well.

They have, and it starts on the defensive end, the
physicality that Michigan State plays with.

It's the defensive end, and it's the depth and between
those two things that's why they've been really good. By
the way they've got the young Philla and Richardson, who's
really taken over on the back end of that schedule.
You asked, how were they going to handle that back
end of the schedule. Did they have a guy that
was going to be able to take over possessions, takeover games.

Well, Richardson has done that, and I think that's the
thing that I look at.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Remember the first game against Wisconsin, he ends up with
eleven point six, says five rebounds, but got foul trouble
early in that game, didn't play the first half or
didn't play a lot of minutes in that first half
because of that foul trouble. So I'm very curious to
see how this plays out in the first half.

The Spartans go ten deep in their rotation. We've talked
about Wisconsin's depth and hell effective that has been throughout
the course of this season. Michigan State has as much
as anybody gets thirty four and a half points per
game off the bench. I mean, it's very common if
ten play ten will score. That's just how good they

have been. And I know the overall analysis that people
have had about Michigan State is that Izzo has had
teams with more individual talent. Although you just mentioned Jace
Richardson certainly on a path to start him, but many
you talk about buy in to the Michigan State way, defend, rebound, run,
and whatever your role is, embrace it. Izzo's got a

group it seems to be doing all that in the dens.

And I think this, as much as we talk about
the stars in this game, there is going to be
somebody that steps up and we look at and say
he was the difference maker. Is it gonna come from Wisconsin?
Is it gonna come from Michigan State. We got forty
minutes to figure that out. But there's going to be
when you have that much depth on both teams, somebody's

gonna step up that you don't expect to step.

Michigan State advance to today by virtue of a seventy
four to sixty four victory against Oregon. The Spartans and
Ducks had looked like that was going to be a
tight game throughout the day. Michigan State broke to lose,
had to run to turn what was a one point
lead into double digits and route to win number twenty
