kings here in southern California and around the country.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
And here's your host, Jason Levine here. Yeah, Hey, I'm back.
Speaker 8 (03:48):
Saturday morning to you. Happy Pegasus morning to you, wor
as you down to Hot Springs Ark saw A Happy
Southwest day to you. Uh We're happy Sam Squall day
for the Santa Anita folks. Anyway, happy Saturday. Happy to
be back with you. I am Jason Levine. This is
(04:10):
Inside Racing. Lots to talk about today, one time of
the year and start to kick in the gear down
at Gulf Stream and at Oaklawn and of course at
Santa Anita. Good news on the weather front, which has
not been the case at a few of those places.
Golf Stream Park day to day obviously, Pegasus Day, Pegasus
(04:31):
to Pegasus Turf, Philly and Mary Turf. Three more Big
Steaks thirteen race card and the weather is beautiful down
in Florida, or at least that part of Florida, so
no worry. Is there fast and firm for the big
day down at Gulf Stream Park. So that is great
news and even better because of the problems they've been
(04:53):
having at Oaklawn Park. It's going to be a balmy
fifty four today, which for them is like a eighty
way it's been going. The track is should be in
okay shape, which has not been the case, So big
day for them. The Southwest for three year olds, the
Martha Washington for three year old Phillies, and four more
small steaks setting that up. Races five, six, seven, and
(05:16):
eight are the set up stakes, and then the big
ones are races nine and ten. The Southwest one of
the first big races for three year olds on the
Kentucky Derby Trail, and there's some exciting horses in there,
including Patch Adams, who ran off the charts last time,
but that was against Maidens and he steps up today.
(05:37):
So we'll talk about that. Whether in southern California is fine,
it's going to get a little weird. We're going to
get some rain, which of course is great, but today
should be very nice out at the Great Race Place
at San Anita. So I missed a lot while I
was gone, and I did want to note that in
(06:01):
tough times, and these were about the stuff as you
get in southern California, you know, some people step off,
some people step up, and the racing community has always
really stepped up in times of crisis. I think it's
because everybody loves horses so much. That's kind of quality individuals.
(06:22):
That's a good sign. Anyway, Kudos to everybody out at
Santa Anita, everybody involved with the effort in helping in
any way possible with everybody affected by the fires so
down in San Luis Ray and del Mar, they had
to evacuate San Luis Ray, evacuate all the horses, take
them to del Mar, and that worked out. Everybody stepped up,
(06:46):
pitched in and helped make it happen. It turns out
it's okay, so they are back at San Luis Ray.
So that was a lot of work for a lot
of people taking care of a lot of horses. And
it's just something that the racing community has always is done.
You hate to see it pushed to the brink like that,
but a lot of cooperation and frankly some inspiration for
(07:09):
those of us that weren't here to hear and see
and talk to people who stepped up and were able
to help others in need. That's kind of the best
of who we are. So I guess that's the only
good thing about terrible crises like this is you do
find the best of people. Worse two but focused on
(07:33):
the best for now. So well done by everybody, and
if there's any way you can help somebody, you don't
do it, it doesn't cost you anything. It feels good
they need it. So yeah, tough times, strange times, that's
for sure. But rain is coming for a couple of
days off and on. That'll be great. And it's going
to be cold next week, which is also very very
(07:54):
good for helping contain and hopefully finish off all these
fires and these issues. All right, let's get back to
the racing because that's going full bore and no worries
on that front. So all right, let's see quickly Santa
Anita first post noon today noon first post ten race card.
(08:17):
A big Cat prep is the feature of the Sam
Pascual that goes as race eight. See a first time
four year old imagination from the Bob Baffert Barn, taken
on the usual suspects of the older horses. Here going
a mile in an eighth. It's a good race. There's
a few good races today. We start off with the
Hillside Turf Race, which is awesome, and we finished with
(08:39):
a mile and eighth turf race which has a nice
full field and is also a very very good race.
There is a strong maiden race in Race four, strong
three year old maiden race. I'm sure we'll see a
couple of runners come out of there. Two from the
Bob Bafferck Barn, but a few others highly regarded by
their connections. RaSE six is the new Northern California Special
(09:02):
for eight thousand claimers. Those races have been pretty solid
as far as gambling goes, so that's been a good
addition to the Santa I needed cards. So far, so good,
I guess you want to look at it that way.
So pretty solid card on a Saturday at Santa it
should be. And it is so happy about that. I
know our man Steve told me yesterday he's very excited
(09:24):
about the about a few races in the Sant I
need a card and I should note that Steve will
join me in a few minutes, and he added six
bonus races from Gulf Stream today to the Santa. I
need a full card. That's about as bonus as you
can get. You buy the Santa I need a full card,
(09:45):
you get six bonus races from Gulf Stream, including the
Late Pick four. And I know there's a couple he
really likes in there, and he did it for good reason.
This is a great card down at Gulf Street Park.
I talk about this a lot. There's maybe ten or
twelve cards like this a year. This is one of them.
And the Pegasus itself came up a very competitive, very
(10:06):
interesting race with the first time four year olds Locked,
Mystic Dan and Stronghold, the Older Bose White, A Barrio,
Saudi Crown, Skippy Linstocking, mixedtow, very very good race, a
lot of different ways to go in there. I think
Locked is clearly the one to beat, but it's got
(10:29):
to do it again. After an impressive effort last time
in his comeback race, he ran very fast and their
Mystic Dan has a lot to prove after his flop
in the Malibu and flop well before that in the Belmont,
Stronghold looks good coming off his effort in the Malibu.
He's got to break through and stop running second. But
(10:51):
very nice horse. It looks like he is improving as
he turns four. And yeah, white a Barrio loves gold
Stream Park. He's now six. He is six for eight
at gulf Stream. He had his prep. He should be
ready to roll for Saffy Joseph. So he'll be, uh,
what's the phrase, juiced up and ready to go. We'll
see about that. But you know he's going to be
(11:13):
tough down there. So really good feature race the Pegasus
to close it out. That's race thirteen. But the Pegasus
Turf I thought came up a very good race. You
got three California shippers in there. Formidable Man from Mike McCarthy,
me Ermano Ramon from Mark Glatt and down the cop
(11:34):
Phil Demotto. They're going to take on some very tough turfers,
including a Charlie Applebe shipper Nations Pride. We've seen him before.
That's a really good race, and probably the best race
on that card is the Philly and Mayor Turn which
goes as race ten. That is just a loaded race
top to bottom. You can make a case for I'd
(11:55):
say seven or eight of them in there. It was
a really really nice race of a star from Chile
who's showing up first time in the States. There we
have a star from South Africa who ran second in
her US debut for Todd Pletcher, and then just a
lot of really really nice Phillis and Bears in that
billionaire turf race. Just a rock solid race. I should
(12:19):
note a lot of scratches out of race eleven, which
is in between all those the inside information. Take out
the one, two, three, and five in race eleven at
Gulfstream Park. That cuts it down to a five horse
race in there. That's obviously a key race for the
late pick four, late pick five, and again now down
(12:40):
to a five horse race. There in race eleven. RaSE
nine which picks off the pick five is the William
McKnight a mile and a half on the grass. That
is also a very very nice race. You know, Steve
like somebody in there. But I thought that race came
up very good. And before that you got the Fred
Hooper a mile on dirt for a voyant, a mile
(13:03):
and a half on turf for the Phillies and mayors,
and a very nice turf sprint. So it is someday
down in South Florida for the Pegasus. The bad news
is in the last couple of weeks word has come
out of that area that there may be this one
in two more Pegasus, maybe three. But Wenn Destradak and
(13:31):
her guy, Keith Brackpool, I was surprised to see that
name giving the bad news to the horsemen down there.
They don't really want to race anymore. They want to
build down there and they want to racing. I guess
there's the phrase that you use down there, because they
say the people that want to invest in building on
(13:52):
the land and next to the casino there don't want
to be involved with racing. They don't want to have
to kick some of the money to racing, which is
why they got the casino the first place. So kind
of ironic and pathetic, but the news was not good
out of South Florida. So we'll see how that story
plays out over time, but right now not good at
all for the future of racing down at Gaulf Stream.
(14:12):
Twenty twenty eight might be it, at least that's how
it was kind of laid out for the folks down there.
So we'll see. But today the focus should be on today,
and it's a really really nice card. You know, a
lot of opportunities, a lot of options and ways to
go down at gall Stream today, so I'm looking forward
to it again. The weather is good, so no issues
(14:33):
with the racetrack. It's all dirt and turf, no synthetic
in the big races, which I think is great. Don't
have to worry about that. Okay. Oakland Park I mentioned
they have four minor stakes, then the two big ones
that Martha Washington for the Phillies and mayors, and then
the Southwest which goes as raised ten. So I'm going
(14:56):
to jump to that real quick. Three year old races
are fun this time of year. They really. It's a
twelve race card down there by the way at Oakland
twelve and there's some full fields, some good maiden races.
But the Southwest Bob after Chips in Gaming, who was
the top two year old for a little while in
his barn, won the del Mar Futurity and then went
(15:18):
into the Breeders Cup Juvenile as his best ran second
behind Citizen Bull, a solid second, but he got beat
by the stable mate. Then went into the Losal futurity
and kind of ran a stinker. He was there on
the turn making a move and then just flattened out,
got beat by six in that local futurity. So he's
(15:41):
got a really looking around here. One in the wrong
direction is gaming and we're going to find out today.
He was just a really precocious cult who was good
going one turn where a piece legitimate to turn potential
derby horse today we'll let us know. It's not that
much of a field. He has to beat maybe the
(16:05):
seven Patch Adams who gets Slavi and Pratt today for
brad Cox won by ten and a half last time
and ran one twenty and three going seven furlongs of
Churchill Downs, just off the charts, beating Maidens. I did
look into that race a little bit. He didn't beat
anything in that race. The three or four horses to
(16:26):
run back after that race did absolutely nothing. He had
it very very easy, but he ran very fast in there.
Good chance he bounces off that race. I'm betting against
him today. That's the kind of worse I like to
bet against. He's got to prove it to me today.
He's got to go two turns and he's got a
lot tougher to beat today than he did that day,
(16:48):
So I'm going to try to take a shot against
the seven Patch Adams. It's a little tough to find
who you're going to go with if it's not going
to be gaming. So I landed on the sixth Sandman.
Christian Torres rides from Mark Cassey. That's a very good combination,
both very good in their own right and very good together.
(17:08):
I just feel like the source is going in the
right direction. And yeah, every race seems to get a
little better. And he won at Oakland last time, which
I think is a very good sign. So I only
ended on the sixth sand Man. And if you can
beat Patch Adams in gaming, it's wide open. So I've
got a very interesting race there in the southwest. The
(17:28):
Martha Washington draw fairly short field. The rail Philly is
going to be favored. I think the one quiet side
she looks pretty tough in there. So yeah, just a
lot of good action all over the place. So excited
about today, A lot of a lot of races to play.
Got to be kind of focused today, but that's okay.
(17:49):
We can do that. We're capable. So let's bring on
our man. Steve Pollock and what he's doing and talk
to him about some of this good stuff. Steve, good morning,
welcome back. Hey there he is, Thank you sir. Happy
to be back. What I meant to hear that voice.
Speaker 9 (18:12):
It's been a while.
Speaker 8 (18:13):
It has been a while. Yeah, I had to take
care of some family stuff, fly halfway across the world
to do it. Everything is good, So that's good. And yeah,
and then had a little pit stop for a little vacation,
which was nice. And now I'm back and we got
Pegasus Day which came up very good this year in
(18:33):
a nice cart at San Anita and the Southwest at Oakland.
Take a look at some three year olds moving on
to the Kentucky Derby. So I came back at the
right time, I'll take it.
Speaker 6 (18:44):
Yeah, you sure did, Jason.
Speaker 9 (18:46):
This is certainly the highlight of I think the first
two three months of the year is this day. What
they've done down at Gulf Stream, you know, is really fabulous.
This thing has gotten bigger and bigger, and it's.
Speaker 6 (18:59):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 9 (19:00):
It's such a big day across the country that you
got Flavian Pratt and Juan Hernandez. They're going to Oaklawn
to ride that million dollar race, because boy oh boy,
the big money is certainly down at Gulf Stream with
these two Pegasus races, but they're run for a million
bucks at Oaklawn as well, So big money everywhere, and
(19:20):
that Pegasus Jason, I really want to touch on that
first off, because they just haven't been running these distances anymore.
Speaker 4 (19:28):
The mile and of.
Speaker 9 (19:29):
Sixteenth races that they run down at Gulf Stream have
primarily become TOPEDA races or synthetic races. And I tell
you what, I've been playing golf Stream a lot, almost
every day now. I've been playing golf Stream, and they
have not run very many races at this mile and
an eighth third race. So we're going to go back
and look at the history of not only this race,
(19:51):
but of this race track. Certainly not using this meat
because we just haven't seen this distance. But Jason inside
and speed has been absolutely go at this at this
in this race and at this distance.
Speaker 8 (20:04):
Well, isn't it. I mean, I think the last it's
a lot of years you had to be on the
lead or like within a head at the top of
the stretch to win this race. If you weren't on
the lead or within like half a length. You had
no shot. That's long. You know, you got to be
right there turning for home. That's in the case, at
(20:25):
least in this race. And when it was the Don handicaps,
going back a long.
Speaker 9 (20:29):
Time, absolutely, you know, Jason, I watched this race with
you when gun Runner ran, and we you and I
were playing against gun Runner in that race because we
thought he couldn't get positioned. Now, gun Runner was a
great horse, and we knew it was a great horse,
and we knew two minutes it was. That was incredible
(20:49):
to look. Excuse me that you and I gave each
other two seconds after they opened the gate. We were like,
oh man, we're in trouble, and we were, and gun
Runner won for fun, and I just I think that's
going to have to be the case for Lock today.
I know, you know, at this point Locked is certainly
no gun Runner. But from that post position, you're going
to go into that first turn, and I will tell
(21:11):
you the way that track plays, you're either going to
be old man or we're in trouble, or he's going
to be okay. And I am sort of leaning towards
the old man. We're going to be in trouble situation
here for both locked In Skippy long Stocking who are
really hung out.
Speaker 8 (21:26):
Yeah, it's a tough post there. It's such a short
run to the first turn for those that haven't seen
this race or forgot in a while, and that's why
we played against gun Runner incorrectly. But it's the story
is almost on the turn and just the configuration of
the track, the way the race flow goes after that start.
(21:47):
An outside post is tough. You have to get a
great ride or just be a very fast horus who
breaks great and is able to clear or get good
position quickly and not lose too much ground. So that's
the that's what Johnny Blaska's face is unlocked, who ran
that huge Cigar mile in early December was his career race,
(22:08):
So there's that. But I mean he's the he's the
inform horse for sure of this group on the rise
and first time four year old mystic Dan kind of
going the other way. He's got a lot to prove
all of a sudden, the derby winner has kind of
gone backwards since then. But there's some speed on the
inside here too with White a Barrio who that's not
(22:29):
as fast as he used to be and Saudi Crown,
who is pretty fast, who drew the two hole here,
mixed those on the rail. He's pretty fast and they
know what's going to happen, so it's going to be interesting.
Speaker 9 (22:39):
Really Yeah, those two are very important to me. Mixed
toe and Saudi Crown. I think White a Barrio gets
a good trip tracking he is coming out of two
seven for long races and he you know, which isn't
necessarily the best thing for a horse trying to go
a mile on an eighth I prefer always prefer the
other way around, ges horses shortening up versus stretching out.
(23:02):
But going from a one turn to a two turn race,
White to Barrio certainly a contender engineer, but I think
he can be beaten. And you know, Mixto is going
to be very important in this race because is he
going to go out and does he have the speed
to challenge Saudi Crown. I think that's going to be
really important in this race. If he doesn't, I think
(23:22):
Saudi Crown is going to be very tough. But if
Mixto can come up and put a little pressure on him,
could be a little different situation. But the speed in
this race is certainly going to come from those two.
Speaker 8 (23:34):
Yeah, And like we said, it's just vital almost necessary
to be on or right on top of the lead
turning for home in this race historically. So that's race
thirteen on the Gulf Stream card today. Quite a card
and that's the finisher putting the cherry on the Sunday there.
And I know there's a bunch of other races you
like on that card me too. I thought that phillyam
(23:57):
Mayor Turf Race was just phenomenal. Race itself, is really
really good. It's it's quite a card. A lot to
choose from there. So that's why you added so many races, right, I.
Speaker 9 (24:09):
Did, Jason really liking the card down there today, especially
liking that VEGASUS World Cup Purf Invitational, which is race
number twelve. I've got several other selections and the other
grass races. We're going to have a good day down there, folks.
If you've been watching football and you've been taking it easy,
or you've been dealing with some personal stuff that's going on,
and you're going to go out there today is a
(24:29):
heck of a data call. We are going to do
well today, including at Santa Anita where I've got four
or five good races there where we're going to take
some shots with some prices, and I think we're going
to hit one or two of them.
Speaker 8 (24:41):
So we like to hear here we go, Let's get
the get rolling radio winner last week, right, always in
a good thing.
Speaker 9 (24:48):
We did, Jason. We ran one, two three in that race.
You did get bed down a little bit, but we
did get We did get the Winter Home and and
let's see if we can't go back to back here.
Speaker 8 (24:58):
Yeah, let's do it. So before we do real quick.
The Eclipse Awards were this week. We had talked a
while back about some of these and we thought Johannes
had a chance and deserved maybe to be the turf
horse of the year. He did not get it. California
was denied. There. His phenomenal campaign out here, which finished
(25:19):
with a second in the Breeders Cup Mile, was deemed
not as good as one race from Rebels Romance. We
talked about it, so we don't have to go into
it too much. But I just don't get that. I
just don't understand how they could do that, but they did.
We kind of thought they might.
Speaker 6 (25:38):
And they did.
Speaker 8 (25:39):
So he was denied Torpedo Anna correct Course of the Year.
Another denial was Ken McPeak was not named Trainer of
the Year, even though he had a phenomenal campaign of
Torpedo Anna, including running her in the travers and the
Derby winner with this stick Dan and everything else. Cany
McPeek did, They gave it's Chad Brown, So okay, I
(26:04):
just kind of shake your head on that one. So
any quick thoughts of that before we jump into a.
Speaker 9 (26:08):
Race, well, I mean, the Trainer of the Year, it
might as well just be a three guy race before
they even start if they're not going to let the
little guys win. But they did, let you know, you know,
really that was That's the way that was because a
guy like McPeek just he's just not even it's not
in the game. If you can't if he had his
year and he can't win, then then it might as
(26:29):
well just be between the big three.
Speaker 8 (26:31):
Yeah, it's a joke. I mean, I'd start cursing now
if I cared that much. But I've stopped caring about
the Eclipse Awards because they've become kind of a joke,
I think, And this is why you're a sport. People
just laugh at me. I tried to explain this to
somebody just laughed at me, like, really, why wouldn't they
give it to the guy? I said, I don't know.
(26:51):
You know, I told him why and he said, well,
that's just dumb. He said, yeah, it's dumb, but dumb
people in the sport. So at least they got the
flabby and pratt. I mean, he had to break every
record to do it, but he got tough.
Speaker 9 (27:06):
He was deserving, so let's let's congratulate him. I am
disappointed that Johannas didn't win, but maybe the best horse
did get it. But boy, you know, when a horse
runs only one race in this country. But I I
that's very disappointing. Johannas did everything he could possibly do
except when that breeders got mile and and you know what,
(27:26):
I think just had a little bit cleaner trip early,
he would have been right there on the wire. He
just lost a little bit too much ground around that
first turn and just Flavia no excuse me, rispol He
just couldn't get the position that he normally gets on
that turf course. And that's what happens when you have
you know, eleven good riders, twelve good riders, in a
race in these big fields, it's it's tougher for these
(27:47):
good riders to get that situation. And when we get
to my radio play, we're going to talk about something
that's a little bit of the opposite of that.
Speaker 8 (27:54):
All right, well, let's let's do it. Let's go to
sant Anita and you're going to talk about race ten.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
I am.
Speaker 9 (28:05):
You know, Jason, you can go back and forth as
to who your top four riders are in this turf course,
Pratt and Rispole, Hernandez and Barrios, and I think Free
Sue is clearly the fifth best. He's struggling a little bit,
but I think those top four, I mean, you could
almost go with any one of those four and you
have such a big advantage. But when you have all
of them gone and you only have one of them
(28:27):
in the race, it makes it pretty difficult. I was
actually going through this race and trying to think about
it from a different standpoint, because I do it from
you know, I'm usually more into who the horse is.
But when I went in here and I said, well,
who's the second best turf rider in this race? And
I went, well, it's probably Edwin Maldonado On the lead,
but if it's not under a certain circumstances, maybe it's
(28:51):
Franco Giovanni or Diego Ferreira. And to me, neither one
of those guys are even above average turf riders. So
when I look at the five Paradise Lake, who's coming
off a little bit of a layoff, and I look
at her effort that she ran where she ran second
to raw Ability, and I look at the favorite in here,
Kentucky Gal, who ran against Rawability at Gorwyn Park, and
(29:14):
I did watch that race, by the way before Rawability
ran here at Delmar and one in very impressive fashion,
beating Paradise like that day. But Rawability was beaten by
fourteen by excuse me, beat Kentucky Gal by fourteen lengths
and Paradise Lake went wide every step of the way
(29:34):
with JJ and the Irons just couldn't get over forty
seven and change half. Not that fast, just couldn't get positioned,
but kept coming and was very impressive on tape. Comes
from a barn that does extremely well with layoff horses
and Pete Hurton, and you got a first time four
year old in here with a nice consistent string of works.
I think Paradise Lake is going to run very well,
(29:54):
and you know the question is as will she get
the trip well? Instead of looking at how the trip
is going to shake, I'm going to go by hey
when you have those other guys not in the race
and they're not taking that position, and most of these
other guys are just trying to get their own horse
around the racetrack, and you've got a guy like Barrios
who's such a thinker where he's going to where he
(30:16):
wants to go. I think this horse has a big
advantage today, and not only that, I just love the
horse's last race. So fresh four year old no problem
for me, especially from a good barn. I think Paradise
Lake is the right horse. I think the exotics in
here are very solid. The two Strutting is certainly a
horse to consider. A very good effort to Sirija in
November at Delmar the American Oaks effort against She Feels Pretty.
(30:39):
You can just put a line through that race folk.
She Feels Pretty is at a completely different level than
what these horses are in here. Strutting a very strong contender,
and I would play a bigger exact that with her,
and I'm going to use these other three horses, Jason.
There are the four Lady Claypool, the sixth Kentucky Gal
who is first time in the country, who Jeff Eagle listed.
(30:59):
I have the two in the morning line. I'm going
to use this one, Jason, But this one was beaten
by fourteen lengths the raw ability in Paradise Lake was
only beaten a half a length the same horse, So
I'm gonna, you know, use that horse, but I think
it's a favorite we can beat. And then the very
interesting price horse in here, which makes the exotics interesting
is the seven. I'm a joker who I think will
be the pacesetter in here. And this is a big
(31:22):
rider change to Edwin Maldonado and certainly extremely dangerous at
a big price in here at fifteen to one. And
you know, if Paradise Lake was bet down, this is
a win bet that I would consider. But I like
the five is the key in here, Paradise Lake. I'm
gonna play here well to win, and Jason will play
that simple trifecta that I like to play first and
second five with two four six and seven. It's five
(31:45):
with two four six seven, come back and play two
four six seven with five with two four six seven.
It's the five Paradise Lake in tenth in the tenth
race out of sant Anita today.
Speaker 8 (31:57):
Yeah, he Burrio is closing the show and like you said,
the other guys are out of town. Does he stand
out on the grass for sure. So it's the five
Paradise Lake in Race ten. Should go off right around
four thirty on which should be a very nice day
out at Santa Anita. Hope a lot of folks go
out there, support the game and enjoy a really nice day.
(32:19):
It's the wine festival today for those that are interested
in doing that, I'd do one of those people just
throwing that out there among other things. So have yourself
a great day. I know there's a lot to play.
I know you're focused to get a little card there
with when the races are so you know you're not
going to miss anything. And I recommend folks are aware
(32:42):
of what time things go off today because you've got
to kind of bounce around a little bit. So knock
them dead and look forward to talking to you next Saturday.
Speaker 9 (32:51):

Speaker 8 (36:09):
Hey, we're coming back here on Inside Racing and Jason
Levine happy to be back with you. That's the band
right there. As I always say, you've got to be
awfully good to call yourself the band. They were that good.
And finally there are no more band members with us.
With the passing of Garth Hudson, this week. So talk
(36:30):
about that a little bit more with Jay when he
comes on, because I know he's well aware of mister
Hudson and his abilities what he contributed. So we'll get
to that, but for now, let's get back to the racing.
Big race at Oaklawn, the Southwest, huge card down at
Gulf Stream, the Texast card there highlighted by that, the
big Pegasus race thirteen to close the card, and a
(36:53):
nice card at sant Anita and our man Bruno to
Giulio on top of all three. Right, Bruno, I got
a bone to pick with you. Wow, comes right on.
Picks a bone? Okay?
Speaker 10 (37:04):
Oh, I you know, are you done playing winners Waldough
and hanging out with Croggodile down Dan putting shrimps on
the barbie down down there?
Speaker 8 (37:13):
I am done. I'm done with down Under for a while. Yes,
but it had to be done. Uh you know, you
got you got some family over there. You gotta you
gotta take care of business.
Speaker 10 (37:21):
So we got no we get no, no notes, we
get nothing. Man, I've got another bone to pick with you, okay.
You you and Steve there through the races. I was
going to go through, you know, and in the infamous
words of Eric Cartman on South Park.
Speaker 8 (37:44):
That's it. You're done taking your ball and going home.
That's it.
Speaker 6 (37:51):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (37:52):
Anyway, who didn't Who didn't hate the kid that did
that on the playground? Right? Everybody knew a kid who
did that, right when things didn't go their way. When
I'm taking my ball and that ball is mine, I'm
taking it, I'm going home, Like, no, you're not. We're
playing with that ball. Shut up?
Speaker 6 (38:06):
Did you have brothers?
Speaker 10 (38:09):
Did you grow up with us?
Speaker 8 (38:12):
I kind of did that half brother and a step brother,
and I lived with them about half the time as
a kid, So yes, I did have You know, you
had one brother there?
Speaker 10 (38:20):
Always did that? You have the one brother you sent
along all the time.
Speaker 6 (38:25):
He said, go along?
Speaker 10 (38:26):
You know, you know right now I want to take
you and Steve and say go along. Don't be that
way you talk about you talk about you. You let
me tell you something. Let me just say this, And
the immortal words of of Dan Aykroyd and and and
(38:46):
and and count count appoint with Jane Carton. They say,
you and I'm not going to go payry estate.
Speaker 8 (38:53):
Hey, come on now, this is kind of a family show,
so you can't go there.
Speaker 10 (38:59):
That's why I didn't do that.
Speaker 8 (39:01):
Yeah, that's good. Hey, you know that that's not that's
not true, though, I set the table for the Southwest.
But we're waiting for you. Steve didn't talk about that
at all. The tables wide open here. It's a very
interesting race. I think the workouts are very important here
on the two most important horses, gaming and Patch Adams.
(39:22):
I'm very interested to hear what you say about about
Patch Adams because I'm looking to play against him. I'm
getting the feeling you're going to tell me not to
but that's okay, So you know, break it down for me,
because these are you know, these are the races people
have a lot of interest in for good reason. And
we you know, this race usually does produce in Arkansas Derby,
you know, winner or certainly a couple of runners. So
(39:45):
what should we be looking for here down at oaklahom
Park where they're finally getting to run after being frozen
out for a while.
Speaker 10 (39:51):
Well, you were starter, and I'm going to come in
and close the game right now. I'm going to be
closed the game, Sugar, you know, do it? So do
it all right? At Oakland, Patch Adams before he ever
started showed signs of being a very, very talented two
year old at the time, and when he ran first
time out of Keenland, you know, it's really hard to
(40:15):
shock me, but I was shocked when he didn't run
as well. He finished stirred behind a couple of decent horses.
One of them was camp Hale, who has come back
to run nothing but seconds. But he's a pretty good horse.
But I was perplexed because I know what I saw
in the morning. I trust my eyes, but I also
(40:35):
know that a first time starter, he's a good horse.
It doesn't mean he has to win. I mean, tak
Now lost first time out. I remember that because I
had about ten thousand dollars worth to pick three tickets
that had to bear up. But you know, you don't
(40:57):
have to be you don't have to win first time
out to be a monster. And he showed them to
be the monster that he was last time out, which
was just a powerful performance. Now that and I'll tell
you first time sprint first sprinters stretching out for the
(41:17):
first time are most likely to put their best effort forward. Now,
I'm not saying this patch Adams is not going to
be It's only a sprinter. But right now, that's all
he's done and the way he wanted seven furlogs is
a good indicative of what he's going to do with
a little bit of more distance. Now here's the other
(41:38):
part of the game, and game falls into disc too.
Oaklan horses have had a lot of issues getting to
the track because I know because we run video workouts
from Oaklan now and the problem was is that we
got so many cancelations. I think we've had three days
of workouts in the last in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 8 (42:02):
Yeah. It's brutal down there.
Speaker 10 (42:04):
Yeah, so there's a little bit of of of that
that that that ability of getting out there and your
repetitions over the tracks and just you know, just health wise.
You know, for a horse to be able to be
moving all the time, you can jog them, you know,
they can do something in the barn, but you've got
to get that movement. Horses are all about movement and
(42:27):
so if this race sets up for anybody, it's Patch
Adams and Gaming. However, they've been Adam absolute monster, I believe,
and he's going to show it today because he comes
from Pasing, he's been training down there and it's easier
going from warmer weather to cold than going from cold
to warmer weather for sure for horses or hot weather.
(42:51):
So him coming up is going to be a very
very strong He's fit, he's been out on the track
over day, he's been doing these things and he's talented.
That is a dangerous combination no matter the price. So
because I play horses, I don't play prices gaming. I thought,
you know, you said it best. One thing I happened
last night.
Speaker 8 (43:11):
Now I was that was a shocker. I mean los Al,
You know, you can kind of forgive it. Los Al's
a strange track. Most of Bavatorises like it, but it's
an odd track. But you really have to be willing
to just throw that race out to give him a
shot here, because he had every opportunity. He was right
there moving up on the rail and then he just
(43:32):
had nothing all.
Speaker 10 (43:33):
The way down one turn.
Speaker 8 (43:35):
Horse. Jason, Well, that's like I said, that's that we're
gonna find out today because if it is, they'll turn
him back to one turn and he'll run in those races.
So today is a put up, a shut up day
for him. He has been training and I you know,
I saw, I saw that you liked. I guess it
was the last work or one of the last couple
of works. And he has been training consistently, so that's
(43:56):
a plus. But he's got to show it today.
Speaker 10 (44:01):
It's a really it's an interesting race. Patch Adams to me,
is really nice. Now let's go to better weather down
in Florida, South Florida. You guys talked about the Pegasus
and I like to go back and remind myself of
racist by just watching the replay. And I'm not really
looking for trouble. I'm looking how the race set up.
(44:22):
That is one of my biggest pet peees with people
that call themselves video handicappers, they look for trouble, they
don't look for setups. Why to Barrio absolutely got eliminated
at the start last time. Now he walked back in
the starting gate just as they sprung the latch, and
he was off about a bag slow. And what happens.
(44:44):
He's quick enough to get into into his stride. But
as soon as he got into his stride he was
he was quick enough to get pinched ross Bridston. You
know taught me that line. They're fast enough out of
the gate to get pinched. And what he got pinched
and he had to take back. So now he's sitting
seven to eight back while mufoss is getting the dream trip,
(45:05):
sitting right outside of a sixty dollars or the lunch shot.
So the way he came running, that tells me that
was an excellent effort from him. And that is kind
of the theme and a couple of other races that
I've liked about horses that didn't quite get their trips,
you know, they didn't quite get there the way they
If you watch that race halfway into the race going,
(45:27):
that horse could never win Manustre could never win that
last race the way he was so far. She was
so far back against that pace. So there's a lot
of different ways of looking at things like memory and
in the inside info, hem Mary is going to be
short price. However, if you watch the race, she beat
my main squeeze, who had that kind of trip that
(45:49):
was too far back. You're going, what's going on here?
Why is my main squeeze so far back? And all
of a sudden she comes running. But it's not the
situation that you look at and go, God, that horse
is going to be a winner at the pole, you know.
So it's it's so when I'm looking at those races
and I see the White a Barrio, I think the
wider barrio wins the Pegasus today.
Speaker 8 (46:10):
There you go. If he gets this trip, what she
figures to the way the race, this race sets up.
And he loves golf Stream. I am a horse for
horse guy.
Speaker 6 (46:20):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (46:20):
He's six for eight at GalF Stream and he you know,
this is his track, this is where he prefers to run. Uh.
And they've certainly been targeting this race. What do you
think about the two seven furlong races going into this
mile on an eighth that doesn't bother you?
Speaker 10 (46:33):
You mean for White Barrio?
Speaker 8 (46:38):
Yeah? Yeah, what an interesting way to come in. Well, the.
Speaker 10 (46:43):
White a Barrio is the kind of horse that his
problems m and eight from behind is his issues are behind.
So I think the seven furlong races have been more
to build him up the sprint, to get him going,
you know, to get him to stretch out first fresh
off of two sprints. So he is not a natural
mile and a quarter horse, So you can't He's not
(47:06):
a horse that every time you run him a mile
and eight tomorrow quarter he's gonna run big. You almost
have to prep him at seven and six and then
stretch him out. I mean, if you look at his
record at Gulf Stream, he is really good at one
turn mile, yes, And and they stretched him out. And
in the Florida Derby he won that and and either
(47:30):
kind of horse that likes to mess with horses too,
by the way, he likes to sit there and toy
with horses, which is a trade I love, you know,
and I wish you could get that trait by watching
horses just move, and it's hard to do that.
Speaker 8 (47:47):
You know.
Speaker 10 (47:47):
Who also had that trait was a painter. I'll watched
Painter one morning before the Breeders' Cup. He worked with
a horse that there was there was a tap it
for no, yeah, it was a tap. He ended up
being a Stannion fitz Baffort. I can't remember his name,
but he messed with that horse the entire drill and
when that orts came back to run, he was like
(48:09):
three to five and he didn't get the He he
didn't win because mentally he got messed with by Painter.
Every time Painter he would get next to Painter and
I work. Painter would skiff a way and he said, okay,
catch me. Now, you know, I'm gonna wait for you.
Then you come up to him, he takes off again.
My dog does that drives me nuts, you know.
Speaker 8 (48:29):
Yeah, no, I understand and that that can It's an
interesting trait. Yeah, it's a competitiveness thing, like I'm just
better than you and I'm just gonna mess with you
a little bit. I'm just gonna stream and saw at
it too.
Speaker 10 (48:40):
Remember his races would easy goer, Remember his races with
you know, he'd mess with him, he'd wait for him
to come alongside, and then he'd take off again.
Speaker 8 (48:49):
You know, but you're not going to get me. You
think you got me, but you don't.
Speaker 10 (48:54):
It's a frustrating thing, even for a pet owner when
your dog does that.
Speaker 8 (48:58):
You know, the dogs love to mess with you. That's
just part of their nature. That's fine. My dog does
the same thing.
Speaker 10 (49:07):
Yeah, I got tomorrow, I got a smart Alec dog.
Speaker 8 (49:10):
You know, it's not surprising they take after their owner, Bruno.
You know that they take on the traits of their own.
Speaker 10 (49:16):
Yeah, I taught them, well, right exactly.
Speaker 8 (49:19):
He's been watching you and he sees how things go,
and he says.
Speaker 6 (49:22):
I can do that too.
Speaker 10 (49:23):
So horses are the same way. Mentally, horses can be
the same way. And if you can tune into those
videos and you can watch a horse mess with another horse,
it's it's beauty.
Speaker 4 (49:34):
It's a beauty.
Speaker 10 (49:35):
You just feel like you just hit four knox because
you can understand what that animal is all about. Just
like on the flip side, when you know a horse
gets hooked, he spits a bit. It makes it for
a lot of fun. Watch the racist people watch races
like that, Watch races the weak to see if you
can catch the characteristic of a different of each individual animal.
(49:58):
And when you do, you world will open up because
you'll understand races a lot better.
Speaker 8 (50:04):
I agreed, But it takes time. That takes time, and
you got to really watch. You got to watch the
race a few times sometimes and you got to really
hone in and try to try to understand what's going
on there. So White to Barrio six year old Saffy Joseph,
like you said, definitely pointing to this race. That's what
those two races were about. That's what the works have
been about. This is the big one, this is where
(50:25):
the money's at and uh, you know, for his career,
this is it, right, I mean, this is this is
the one they want. So I know you like the
way he worked. He's coming into the race good and
he's your pick down there. Hey, well done last week
at Oaklhown, by the way, guys hit a very very
nice pick five, paid over five thousand dollars. Those are
nice scores.
Speaker 10 (50:46):
And that's what you do when you get our sheets.
You know, you give you the whole card. We give
you our plays and we hit some monster once. And
before I go, Jason, I want to apologize to you.
You've been gone so long that I've got so much
pent up to give you that you know, I'm taking
that out on you all on one day. But I
(51:06):
love having you back and welcome back, and we love
having you on, you know, as our ring leader here.
Speaker 8 (51:13):
Much appreciated, much appreciated. Well, good luck today. I know
your your focus is three tracks today, but you're capable
of pulling that off. You're a veteran, you know how
to pace yourself. So yeah, Oaklawn, Gulf Stream, Santa Eda today.
I know you're ready to roll. So knock him dead
today and we'll talk to you next week, sir. Have
(51:35):
a great weekend, sir. All right, we'll do Bernardo Giulio.
He's got his sheets with all the works and the
picks from Oaklawn, Santa Anita and Gulf Stream Park for
you Today at racing Jason dot Com does Jake Greenlanders
and he's coming right up. After this stick around, we'll
be right.

Speaker 8 (52:45):
Good. I got a job and put on away. Hey
we're back on inside Racing. I'm Jason Laden. Happy to
be with you. From Steve Pollock. You heard from Bruno Julia.
Now you're gonna hear from Jay Friedland doing a nice
job all over the place. Early pick five seems to
be to think for you lately, right Jay?
Speaker 6 (53:07):
That's it Jason When you've got some of these shorter fields,
you've got to take advantage of them. And the pick
five is exponentially better than the pick four.
Speaker 8 (53:15):
Yeah, and it's the low takeout early pick five. You
hit it last Saturday. It was a small one, but
I believe you said to play it five times. That
was well done. And then Martin Luther King Day on Monday,
a nice early pick five out its ether paid about
two hundred and thirty bucks. And then a very nice
score yesterday in the first race, right pig trifect at
(53:36):
two seventy five something like that and raise one to
kick things off.
Speaker 6 (53:40):
Yeah, that was kind of a surprise, but it was
a nice surprise.
Speaker 8 (53:43):
Yeah, those are the ones you like. Like, wait a minute,
it paid how much? Yeah, we don't get that as
much as we used to do, so when it happens,
you got to be got to be thankful for that.
Speaker 4 (53:53):
Ah boy.
Speaker 8 (53:54):
All right, Well, we got a lot going on today. Obviously,
Gulf Stream Saturdays are what you focus on, so this
is what you've been waiting for. And Santa Anita has
a nice card today too, with the same pass qual
as the feature, So a lot to choose from for you.
Before we get started. Any quick thoughts on the Eclipse Awards.
I know you do follow that and we're keeping track
(54:15):
how things played out.
Speaker 6 (54:17):
Yeah, yeah, a couple of things. Yeah, I was really
disappointed about Kenny McPeak. But congratulations to our guy Flavian Pratt,
who's making California proud no matter which coast he's riding at.
I also want to give a shout also, I did
think you were talking about the Turf Award and I
really thought they overlooked more than looks. More than Looks
(54:39):
had a very consistent campaign, won the Breeders Cup Mile
and that he wasn't even nominated. I know they lost
to Carl Spackler a couple of times around there were
also beat Carl Spackler twice, so I thought that was
a huge miss. So one last thing, I want to
give a shout out to my former employer, Sue Finley,
congratulations on winning the Eclipse for media. Uh and it
(55:00):
was her story after saving two horses from a kill pen,
Stuart ends to do more to end slaughter. It's a
really feel good story and it's kind of a story
that really exposes racing in a good light, and God
knows we need more of that, So congratulations to and
I have linked that story on my two cards today.
(55:21):
So if you pick up the cards, go to the bottom,
there is a link there you can read them yourself.
Speaker 8 (55:27):
Read the Eclipse of winning story about people trying to
do the right thing in racing. I started the show
talking about that, so it's good to finish talking about
it as well. There's a lot of films out there
trying to do the right thing, putting their money and
where their mouth is. I know that was part of
that story, So that's good. We need we need more
of that. All right, Well, let's jump in to hit
(55:48):
a couple of races. You want to start at Gulf Stream.
I know, I notice you aquited the yeah, the big
stakes races there for the for your.
Speaker 4 (55:55):
Play, Well I did.
Speaker 6 (55:57):
I mean these are really part and they are deep,
but I just there was one that stood out here
in ray six, which is done This is on the
Polly on the Toepeda. But you know, I just think
this is a really interesting race. It's a five to
one morning line favorite Jerry the Nipper. Anytime he's that,
you know, the lines are just throwing his hands up.
But the one I like here is and Jerry Nipper's
(56:20):
got a shot. But the one I like here is
number two Emmanuel, and very interesting horse. This horse has
been competing against much better competition than most of these.
He's the class of the field in my opinion because
he's the only multiple graded stakes winner in the field.
And if you recognize those first three in the last race,
Major Dude, Fort Washington and Win for the Money who
(56:40):
he competed against, they should look familiar. They're all in
the Pegasus turf today, so they are looks like it
looks like he just missed the cut. This is his
first time on Tipeda. But not only does he have
a great turf pedigree, he's also two for three on
dirt and his sire more than ready, even though he's
been a very proficient turf side, made all his money
(57:01):
on the dirt, So I think he's got the perfect
pediy for this. Liking number two a manual to take this.
Speaker 8 (57:07):
Yeah, it's a mile and seventy yards, so not quite
a shorter run to the first turn. But Emmanuel does
have tactical speed and does draw inside here blinkers off
today for Mike Maker, this horse has not, you know,
not been in top form but he's been facing by
far the best horses of anybody in the field. So
Luis Siez rides. That's always a good combination, and you
(57:28):
know you're going to get a tough, strong ride from
him in there. So RaSE six, the two e Manuel
to play, and what about.
Speaker 6 (57:35):
Exotics a full wheel on top, part wheel on the bottom,
two with all and then the three of the five
I think have the best shot. In the interest of time,
we'll just read the numbers three, five, seven, ten eleven,
including that favorite Jerry the Nipper with number two Emmanuel.
Speaker 8 (57:52):
Three five, seven, ten eleven with the two Emmanuel as
the as the saber in case he runs second. Looking
for him to score here and then hit the wheel,
maybe a price underneath it. Boom. That's a nice score
for all the stakes races to follow there. All right,
that's RaSE six at Gulf Stream. Let's go to race
(58:14):
nine at Santa Anita.
Speaker 6 (58:16):
Yeah, the big favorite here, number three true Hood. We
haven't seen him almost two years. Bomb Baffert and his
connections purchased this guy out of a sale for seven
hundred thousand dollars. He's up for a tag after being
gone for two years. For twenty k I think we're watching.
I think we're watching closely for front wraps on this one. Jason,
I just don't know what's left of this one, but
we're gonna try to beat something like that. Let's go
(58:38):
down near the bottom and we're gonna look here at
number ten artist number ten, artist point also dropping, but
from a mere fifty thousand dollars claimber. That's a logical
drop bondy forty four percent on the multi class drop.
Number ten artist Point.
Speaker 8 (58:53):
Coming out of a race at Los Alamidos, goes back
to Santa Nita where he ran a nice third there
straight up on artist.
Speaker 6 (58:59):
Point quick exact ten with two three five sixty nine
two three five six nine with ten a three dollars
box three ten and hopefully tear that ticket up. That's
the savor with true hood.
Speaker 8 (59:12):
Yeah, yeah, you don't want truehood anyway near this. You
just want ours point to go do his thing. Yeah,
that coscrossed seven hundred thousand, truly, and we're willing to
get him away for twenty. It works that way sometimes
it's racing.
Speaker 6 (59:23):
That's just how it goes.
Speaker 8 (59:25):
Hey, Jay as always appreciated. Keep your nice role going.
It's a huge, huge day so wishing you the best
of luck at both tracks and we'll talk to you
next Saturday.
Speaker 6 (59:34):
All right, thank you, Jason.
Speaker 8 (59:36):
Okay, Jay Friedlander, he's been on a roll. I'm looking
to continue that today on behalf of Jay and Steve
and Bruno and Zach work on the board. I'm Jason.
Wish you the best of luck. Go get them
