And now it's time for Inside Racing, a full hour
of coverage on everything going on in the sport of
kings here in southern California and around the country.
Speaker 7 (02:40):
And here's your host, Jayceon Levine. Yeah, yeah, good morning.
I am Jason Levine. This is Inside Racing, March eighth.
Is that right? Can it be?
Speaker 6 (02:52):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (02:52):
It is and we're rolling here. All right, Well, I
can talk about it inside Racing today, current racing, racing
from last week, some major stories, breaking news. Let's see
what we can do here today at Santa Anita, two
steaks races, the Big one a Grade one, the Beholder Mile.
(03:16):
There's six billies and mayors in there. That goes to
race eight and right after it, coming down the hillside
turf course, the Grade three San Simeon Mucho del Oro
for Doug O'Neal, a fifty thousand dollars claim that has
worked out very very well and that one drew eight.
It's a solid race on an eleven race card out
at sant Anita where it's going to be just beautiful today.
(03:39):
So we had a little rain this week. It'll be clear,
gorgeous and probably about seventy degrees out at Santa Anita,
so have at it around the country. The big day
they're running a Gulf Stream, they're running the aqueduct. But
at Oakland Park the return of Torpedo Anna, the Queen
(03:59):
of race saying, as it stands right now, arguably the
best horse in training last year and she is back,
which we're very very happy about some older horses running
rather than going to the breeding shed. So she runs
today in the Azeri. An all time great horse deserves
to have a race named after her at Oakland and
Torpedo Anna should beat this field if she's got safer
(04:23):
B plus game. So that's exciting out at Oaklahwand Park.
And then the other big day around the country, big
track would be at Tampa Bay Downs. It's Tampa Bay
Derby Day and they've got a nice All Steaks late
pick four. It's a solid card up and down at
Tampa Bay, so we will talk about that. Bruno is
(04:43):
going to dig into the Tampa Bay derby a little bit.
I'll talk about it a little bit. So that's the
racing today. A lot going on. As always, a little
bit of a recap because we need it because it
was a huge weekend last weekend. First off, I gotta
do it our man Steve Pollock. We had Tom Horn
two weeks ago, paid twenty one dollars coming down the hill.
(05:04):
Great analysis. He told you why he thought Tom Horn
was going to be tough off the layout and boom,
he does it well. Last week he went himself, won
better and he talked about a horse named book Smart,
and he made the case for the Bob Hess junior
horse to find his form from a little bit over
a year ago, and he did that and he won
(05:25):
the race easily on the front end, as predicted by Steve,
and he paid forty seven dollars to do it. We've
been talking a lot about how, you know, horses get
beat down and that sucks, and it does and there's
a lot of issues. But this time this wars got away,
and he got away from the field and forty seven
dollars winter also the one hundred and ninety nine dollars
(05:47):
exact for a dollar. We had quite a few of
these on the show over the twenty two year run,
but back to back twenty one and forty seven dollars
radio play, it's about as good as it gets. So
congratulations to Steve. He'll be joining me in seven or
eight minutes. I know he's excited to keep it going.
(06:09):
Had nice winter yesterday, so it's all good there. But
just I don't know, that's kind of what the show
is all about. Trying to give me some help, trying
to find things, trying to teach a little bit, and
Steve does a great job of it, and just he
really can't do it better than that. I challenge any
other radio show out there, send me the tape of
your person giving out a forty seven dollars winner. So
(06:33):
they have it on the track. Journalism at San Anita,
Sovereignty at Gulf Stream. These are two legitimate Kentucky derby horses.
They look like they're going to get the distance. They
got great trainers, they're well bred, they were good two
year olds. They both have pretty much the same pattern
coming into this race. Three good races as two year
(06:55):
old's got a little bit better in each race, a
little bit of a break, come back first week in
March and boom. Both of them showed up. Journalism more impressive,
I guess than Sovereignty, But these are two horses that
are going to be factors should they remain healthy in
the Kentucky Derby. Journalism has now beaten six Bob Baffert
(07:16):
runners in his last two races. He beat three at
Los Altos in the futurity there, and he beat three
more last week, including Barnes, who ran his heart out,
ran great. I think, probably ran as well as they
thought he would and still got beat because Journalism was
just better. We'll see moving forward. Barnes didn't get a
(07:37):
little bit tired. He went pretty fast, so he's a
factor too. But wow, Sovereignty is a Godlphin horse. If
you know my story, that's the book I wrote that
eventually led to me doing the radio show about Godolphin
trying to win the Kentucky Derby. They've never done it,
but they hadn't done it prior to the book. That
was twenty three years ago. They still haven't done it.
(07:59):
Sovereignty is legitimate. They have a couple other horses, a
couple have gotten hurt. Sovereignty is good and he is
well bred. He should get the distance. He has a
big kick. He showed that. Bruno talked about his lack
of speed out of the gate, at least in workouts,
but boy, he came flying in the last one hundred
(08:20):
yards to nail River Thames down at Gulf Stream. So
that's going to be fun to watch those two in
their final prep and to know that we've got to
that good at Aqueduct. Got to give Jay full credit.
He threw it in there as a bonus radio play
flood zone for brad Cox height thirty seven dollars winning
(08:41):
the Gotham won it pretty easily, ran three four five
wide the whole way around the track. I'm not sure
how serious a contender he is for the Kentucky Derby,
but he's still immature. He's definitely got a lot of talent,
so we'll see him probably next in the Wood Memorial.
But I was a great call by Jay and a
great price. That's another one that just floated up there.
(09:01):
He had two starts for another trainer had been with
Brad Cox for two months and there you go. So
that's the three year olds. Locked could not have been
more impressive winning the Big Cap. We talked about maybe
the only issue for him was the blinkers. Why did
they put the blinkers on? Well, just to keep them focused?
(09:22):
And boy was he focused. That was impressive, really impressive.
So cool that he's in training, cool that he stayed here,
really cool that he ran into Big Cap rather than
over in the Middle East. And I think the connections
have to be very, very excited about the options they
have moving forward. And they've got a really nice racehorse
(09:42):
there and Locked, So that was impressive. Credit to Mike McCarthy.
He won four races on the Big Cap card. Jockie
Emberto recently put on a show, brilliant riding, Flavi and
Pratt had a great ride. So fun day out of
Santa Anita. And the big news going from the track
(10:04):
to kind of off the track is the retirement, the
official retirement of Trevor Denman, the greatest race caller of
all time. If you're a fan of Tom Durkin and
you think he was the greatest, that's fine. They're very
very different. But Trevor changed the game. He changed the
way races were called. He saw the race, he told
(10:25):
the story. The catchphrases are great, they developed over time,
but this is a guy that called the race better
than anybody else had ever called the race because they
didn't really call it. They just kind of told you
where the horses were, which was fine. So what I
grew up on, and it was fine. And then Trevor
came along and was like, wait a minute, he's telling
us what's happening. He's predicting things, and he was right
(10:49):
in ninety nine percent of the time. That was probably
the best part. If he said your horse was making
a big move, you were very excited because he probably
saw it before you did. Best angle. And he had
great vision and a great obviously a great voice. The accent.
We all got used to that pretty quickly, and he
(11:09):
got so famous. He was so good. I think this
is kind of the stamp of approval. He did a
race call of something that wasn't a real race, but
it was pretty important in the culture. So let's hear that.
Have a little fun with that.
Speaker 8 (11:23):
It's chock full of drugs.
Speaker 4 (11:24):
Followed close Lyvice Talker with old Levi's fading fast.
Speaker 8 (11:28):
What's this number five?
Speaker 2 (11:31):
Duncan, the horse no one expected to do anything, isn't
doing anything.
Speaker 8 (11:35):
He hasn't even left the starting gate. Come on, belike,
I know you're scared, but you can do this.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
I believe in you.
Speaker 4 (11:44):
Would you look at this the straggler Duncan has exploded
out of the gate and it is making a big move.
He's showing more heart than any horse I've ever seen.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
What a shame the race is already.
Speaker 7 (11:56):
Over so at a sense of humor in to the
brilliance of Trevor Denman. And you have a unique talent
that we were so fortunate to have in southern California.
For it's about forty years I was in college. I
(12:16):
think when Trevor showed up. Boy, that racing was so
great in the eighties and nineties and early two thousands,
and Trevor was calling all of it here in Southern
California and some of the bigger races of course, Breeders' Cup, etc.
But the man was poetry. And if he said, you know,
if you've got your money, you can go to the
(12:37):
window and collect that was the best sign ever. If
you were on that horse, and Trevor told you that
midstretch and you were home. It was good. He had
so many others. Well, we'll probably pop a few more
on in the next few weeks because he deserves it.
He was that big a figure here in southern California,
and he did change the game. I would say to
(12:58):
some race callers, be careful because you're not nearly as
good as he was, so don't try to paint the
picture all the time. If you're not that good at it,
just call the race. The race will unfold, there'll be drama,
you'll have fun with it. He was unique, who was
the best, and we're just lucky to have him. And
(13:22):
don't try to imitate him. Be yourself you're a young
up and coming race caller or someone else. You can't
be Trevor Denmon. There was only one, so I got
to know him. Really nice guy, fun loving. He's back
in his farm in Minnesota, of all places, which I
always thought was pretty hilarious. I was born there, and
(13:43):
not too many people choose to go there if they
weren't born there. Trevor did, and I wish him a wonderful, easy,
fun retirement. He deserved it. He earned it, and the
boy was it fun to listen to him call races.
I don't think anybody's ever said that before before, Trevor.
So so there you go. All right, where are we at? Well?
(14:04):
Real quick, here, quickly, I guess we'll talk about the
Beholder Mile. Bob Bafford has two in here, including Cavaliery,
who is probably going to be the favorite three for
three undefeated, did win the Lack Canada in her first
(14:25):
start versus older. She's got good speed. She should be
on an aerial lead. Brad Cox ships in Tarifa who
is a very classy three year old. She is a
first time four year old. Is Brad Cox watch out?
She's a three time graded steaks winner, very classy. Al
Fabela has been running very well for John Sadler now
that she's back on the dirt. Richie down on the
(14:48):
rail was a horse that came from Chile into the
Bafford barn. As if there weren't other trainers they could
give her to right. It's crazy, so good six horse
race the Beholder Mile, and again followed by the same
and Simeon and then down to Tampa Bay to Tampa
Bay Derby. I would note that you got speed on
the inside with Owen al Mighty, who really ran well
(15:10):
last time battling John Hancock into Sam Davis, which was
the prep for this, just got beat right at the
wire there, I red Ortiz right, so Owen Almighty and
has speed from the rails watch out and on the
outside Patch Adams was a horse that I said we
needed to try to bet against last time, coming off
that big maiden win. Sure enough, he stumbled at the
(15:31):
start and our man Alan Benowitz taught us that many
many years ago the horse runs that big for whatever reason,
they often blow the start the next time, and he did.
But he ran pretty well actually after the bad start,
made a nice middle move and he's back today. Drew
the outside which should be good for him and definitely
has a chance to rebound in here. Also Chancer mcpatrick
(15:52):
and hill Road, two closers who have not run since
the Breeders' Cup, where hill Road actually ran better than
Chance m patrick. They're both back making their three year
old debut here. I don't like either of them in
this race, but though it may be interesting moving forward
on the Derby trail, we will see Tampa Bay. All right,
Let's bring on our man Steve Pollock. He's smiling, he's excited,
(16:15):
he's focused. Steve, good morning, Good morning, Jason. A lot
to talk about, including you gave you the credit you deserve.
Your man, Mike Smith got out of the gate on
book smart and made you look pretty smart just dusting
that field forty seven dollars. Winners don't usually win that easily.
(16:37):
But you'll take it right.
Speaker 9 (16:38):
I will take it Jason. That was great. It was
nice to complete the exacta there. That was a nice
paying exacta. But what Smith did exactly what I thought
you might. And you know, I tell you that layoff thing,
it works for me and I just there were three
or four horses they're coming off a layoff, and I
just felt like they weren't going to even show as
(16:59):
you know, really good like some of them possibly had
and maybe this horse could shake clear and that's exactly
what happened. So you know, a little bit of fortune
with a good trip and a good break. But you know,
we did come through there and that was great, but
also really really good to see such a great day
at Santa Anita. I could not have been more impressed
with journalism, could not have been more impressed with Locked.
(17:21):
I don't know who was the highlight of the day. Locked,
just gosh, he ran the five path the whole way
around and absolutely took off. And what a massive, massive
horse this one is. He is an absolute monster. Do
you see him in the paddotas?
Speaker 7 (17:40):
I did not, but I have. I mean, he is huge,
beautiful work.
Speaker 10 (17:45):
I don't know.
Speaker 9 (17:46):
I'm not a DAMS expert. I don't know you know
what the numbers are, but I will tell you that
this horse was. He was quite a bit bigger than
everybody else in that race, that's for sure. And you know,
really looks like it kind of still looks like he's
a little bit green, uh, and still maybe goofy learning
the game.
Speaker 10 (18:05):
I mean, my.
Speaker 9 (18:06):
Goodness, if he ever puts it together everything, it's it's
going to be very difficult to beat this horse.
Speaker 7 (18:12):
Yeah, I mean it's a yeah. I agree.
Speaker 6 (18:15):
I was.
Speaker 7 (18:15):
You know, he was wide there on the backstretch and
that's not a trip that usually wins, you know, going
two turns at Santa Anita, and I was like, yeah,
really you're going to keep him out there? Yeah, they
knew what they were doing. That was no problem. Uh.
That that was the old I know what I have
underneath me. I'm just going to keep him in the
clear here. I don't want any trouble because when I ask,
(18:35):
he's just gonna blow by these and he did. So. Yeah,
it's fun to see him, you know, as a four
year old white a Barrio ran his big race. We've
got some older horses. See ear Leone is coming back.
Whatever young is still in training. He's coming back. So
it's really early, but this is one of the better
years we've had in a while for having older horses.
(18:57):
Even Baffort has a couple coming back. Nice is coming
back supposedly. Uh so, hey, you know, maybe we have
a handicapped division, an older horse division this year and
we get some throwdowns before the briers cut. Wouldn't that
be nice? So I would agree, Yeah, we can hope
they kept a few in training and Torpedo Anna, maybe
she'll run against the boys. She doesn't a thing to prove,
(19:20):
you know, against the Phillies and mayors, that's for sure.
So she's run today. So that cool stuff. We've been
asking for this for years, so we got to be
thankful when we get it, and right now we're getting it.
We also wanted shippers to the Big Cap and we
got them. So hit Show didn't do too much, but
Lockshord did, so ye did.
Speaker 9 (19:38):
And I got one of the one of the comments
on the kill Roll mile and that you boy, you said,
I don't know how you knew this, but you said
it was going to take a great ride. And that
was a great ride by virtual Rispoli getting formidable man,
saving every inch of ground and getting through. We talk
about saving ground all the time and how important it is.
But I'll tell you what, if you didn't do everything
(19:59):
per picked in there, he would not have won. And
I know you and I were both very disappointed when
the scratches came out because we really thought we had
something there with El Patente, but he did not go
and I'm not sure what's going on with him, but
we'll keep an.
Speaker 10 (20:12):
Eye on it.
Speaker 9 (20:12):
And then, you know, anytime these horses ship, you see
a horse like me Ormano Ramon and he was less
than even money in that race, and you know, I
mean he was only beating the length in the race.
I know everybody was right there on the wire, but
certainly not his best effort. As I didn't really think
it was trip or anything that really cost him. I
just think he just didn't run as well as he
had been running. But forbiddable man off that three year
(20:36):
old season last year, improves a little bit and gets
the right trip under Rispoli and gets the job done.
Speaker 7 (20:41):
Yeah, and a first time four year old right running huge,
So again something to look for. But that was brilliant right. Well,
recently he was in the zone on the big day,
and that's what you want to see from the best,
right they know when they need to really be on
their a game, and amberto recently was all of that.
He knew what he had lined up for Big CAF
(21:03):
Day and he certainly made the most of it. And
that was that was a genius ride. That was a
Fernando Toro k Desormo level, do everything right, get it done,
beautiful right, everything went right for Mike McCarthy.
Speaker 8 (21:17):
That was that was his day.
Speaker 7 (21:19):
So that I had to be awfully fun for him
and just kind of shake your head when you're a
trainer in that in that zone and think, well, just
keep it going as long as we can here. And
to win four on that day on a day where
Backer was shut out, which does not happen often on
big cap Day. Things really kind of flipped last week.
So it was a different, little bit different, a little
bit interesting, really good racing, and that's so we want
(21:43):
and we got it, so we'll take it and we'll
move forward. Any thoughts on Trevor Demon, I know you
and I talked about it, but you jumped into the
game right when he did. So he's your guy, he
is my guy.
Speaker 9 (21:56):
I'm going to miss him, man, oh man. The race
calls just just give me chills. And it's like you said,
he nobody ever called it. When he didn't call a
race right, it was an absolute shocker when he said
a horse was in deep water and they you know,
maybe one out of a thousand would win.
Speaker 10 (22:13):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (22:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (22:14):
It was incredible how he was so good at picking
out who was running good. He could call a horse
five or six lengths back off the pace and just
know that that horse was really going well, that that
horse was going to make a run. And I mean
they didn't always win every time, but they always fired.
And uh boy, ol boy. Some of the calls the
Express train, U gosh, so many so many different calls
(22:37):
he had that were that were just great. And now
we're going to miss him.
Speaker 7 (22:42):
Yeah, I just just he was really the uh the
backdrop of racing in southern California for a couple of generations.
And uh again, we're just lucky to have them. So
wish him all the best and you know, we move forward.
I have to say I've been impressed with Frank Miramadi.
I think he does a wonderful job. I think we're
lucky to have him and Larry Colemas. He kind of
(23:05):
won me over down at del Mar, so I'm okay
with Larry. I wasn't a huge fan, but day after
day I thought he did a really, really nice job.
He's going to be taken over where the turf needs
the surf one gig for him. He's very excited about it,
as he should be. If you're a race caller, that's
got to be about the greatest gig you could ever have.
(23:25):
And Trevor gave it up and Larry Colemas has it,
so good luck to Larry. I know he's excited and
we'll work his butt off and do the job that
he's been doing down there. So I think del Mar's
in good hands. All right, what are we doing? What
are we thinking today? We got you got a couple
bonus races from Tampa Bay, including the Tampa Bay Derby.
(23:45):
I saw with the sant I need a full card
and eleven race card, and there's some there's some opportunity today.
Speaker 9 (23:52):
There are there's some wide open races, some good turf
racing that we're going to play. Race number ten today, Jason,
this is a a one mile dirt race, a nice
field of eight horses, and we see the return of
Eagle's Flight, which is the little brother of flight Line.
And you know, sometimes you get a reputation and you
(24:15):
always bet it's maybe hard to overcome. This horse was
scratched the other day, and certainly don't give up on
this horse yet. But I'll tell you what, for a
horse that's probably going to be even money. I just
think he's beatable today.
Speaker 7 (24:30):
Yeah, it's a you know, flight Line. We certainly talked
about him for a while. It was difficult to get
him to the races, you know, difficult to keep him healthy,
couldn't get him to back to back races once they did.
I don't know what else we can really say about
flight Line. And that's the excitement for Eagles Flight is
that you know, he ran great first time out, but
like his brother, he can't really stay healthy or put
(24:53):
races back to back either. But there was a lot
of talent in the debut, so you know, people are
hopeful maybe he flight line part two. We hope, but
again only third career race here and was scratched recently,
so yeah, we'll see. But there's somebody you like a
lot better in here.
Speaker 9 (25:14):
I do Jason, I like Tranch, I like trans number
four in here today. That's gonna be my radio play.
Here's a horse that really started his career off with
a bang, had a really really big effort breaking through
here at Santa Nita, winning a race by seven and
a half lengths on the front and actually beating Maramadi
(25:34):
that day. Maramadi is the horse that actually took down
Eagle's flight. And then last time, this horse really really
ran well on the lead every step of the way
and was run down late by New King, and it
really just looked like both horses were firing and New
King just just went better. And kind of ironically, New
King came back and both New King and Marramadi ran
(25:56):
into Santa Nenita handicap last week and New King did
finish in front of Marimati, but they were both at
the back of the pack. So Bafford's horses just weren't
ready to go last week in the Big Dance. But
I think Tranch is ready to go today. Jason, I
like the way this horse started his career out. I
really liked a couple of the sprint races. But really,
since they've stretched this horse out, I don't think this
(26:19):
horse wants any part of the turf. But last time done,
he really showed something as a newly turned four year
old that was a big, big effort, and I don't
see any reason this horse can't come back and do it.
And I think five to one is value. I think
this horse is a is a higher price than he
should be because because they're gonna they're gonna pay attention
to Eagle's flight. And I think the two favorites are
(26:39):
probably the two horses to beat. The horse on the outside.
Santorina has taken a long time to break through. Horse
was zero for nine and one last time it has
to stretch out. And both of those horses, the seven
and the eight, could show speed. Trench has a good
spot being inside of both of them could be able
to cut the corner, or could just sit and let
those two go ahead and sit in third. So I'll
(27:01):
let Giovanni figure that out. But I think kitchen Man
will have this horse ready to go today. Five to
one's a fair price on this one. I'm going to
play number four tranch to win, and I'll play two
simple executive boces using the favorite, the seven Eagles Flight
and the eight horse Santarina. It's the four tranch in
race ten out at sant Anita today.
Speaker 7 (27:22):
Okay, five to one on the morning line. Like you said,
excellent tactical speed. He is inside of the other speed
and Giovanni Franco is going to have to make some decisions.
But it's good to have the horse under you that
has the tactical speed so you can do what you want.
Low profile connections. Adam Kitchingman and Giovanni Franco do not
win a lot of races, so I think that helps
(27:44):
you price, helps stay up there. I think Eagles Flight's
going to absolutely get hammered the way trick, so the
four tranch a nice play here. Second time four year
old in race number ten out of San Anita should
go off for around four forty five California time the
four tranch with the seven and eight on a nice
(28:07):
eleven race card. Steve has been quite a nice role
for you. I know you're you're focused on the weekend
and getting ready to roll from there, So wishing you
the best of luck today and tomorrow.
Speaker 9 (28:20):
Everybody, have a great day out there, enjoy yourselves, and
Jason will look forward to talking to you next week.
Speaker 7 (28:25):
Absolutely all right. Steve Pollock can't be going any better
right now, and that's that's always a good feeling in
horse racing. You got to ride the streaks when you're
on him, and he's doing that. So proud of Steve.
We're going to take our first break. We're going to
come right back. We've got Bruno de Giulio with us.
It's going to talk to Tampa Bay Derby some other stuff.
(28:47):
Jay Friedlander coming up after that. This is Inside Racing

him losing. We will also have some great events coming

Speaker 10 (30:39):
Take you bet.
Speaker 7 (30:44):
Dwayne Alman, Greg Allman brothers go out there in different forms,
put on tremendous show whenever they do perform. All right,
we're back. Where are we at here? You just heard
the spot for DRF and I wanted to mention I've
been using DRF Formulator more lately. I did find out
(31:06):
something interesting. Been wondering about this, been talking about it
on the show for a long long time, about the
Bob Baffort barn and how many young horses he gets
and how they do, and how it's not good for
the game. For one guy, I had that many horses
and for them to run so infrequently. So I did
a little research. And you heard Steve talk about New
(31:30):
King and Miramadi and they ran in the big cap
for Baffort as four year olds, which is nice to
see him have a couple of four year olds. They
were not very accomplished, and they did not run especially well.
But of that group horses that are now four year olds,
Baffert had thirty six of them debut as two year olds,
(31:51):
thirty six of them as two year olds, they'd now
be four year olds. How many are still active with
Bob Baffort, twenty seven are retired or with another trainer,
and I think about twenty four of them are are
finished racing. That's not good. Of the horses that debuted
(32:12):
at three year olds, there were twenty six of them,
seven as collactive. Maybe there's a few more that they're
going to come back. So again, the majority are finished.
They ran once twice, three times, four times, and they're done.
Those sixty two horses that theybuted as two or three
year olds for him cost twenty eight million dollars twenty
(32:36):
eight million dollars and they earned six and a half
cost twenty eight earned six and a half. Biggest win
Arkansas Derby. They won a total so far of eleven
graded stakes. Those sixty two really expensive, really well bred,
hand picked horses. Well, anyway, I'm more to talk about
(32:58):
that moving forward. The best ones of the group. Mooth Imagination,
Prince of Monaco what's about it. Well, Yuri runs today,
she's part of that group. She may be one of
the best. She's three for three. We'll see. But wow,
that's a lot of horses out of action. About forty
(33:19):
three of the sixty two are finished racing. They're done,
and that's not good for anybody, all right. Anyway, Yeah, formulator,
there's all kinds of fun stuff you can play around with,
customize for jockeys, trainers, forces, et cetera. And that was
something I wanted to learn a little bit more about it.
And those were some of the numbers. All right, let's
bring on our man, Bruno. See what he's doing. He
(33:41):
didn't know I was going to do that, So Bruno,
good morning.
Speaker 10 (33:45):
Oh I love what you just did. You know, I'm
sitting here, you know, like we're not largy. You know,
nobody talks about this. Well, nobody discusses you know, everybody
sits there cheerly the sales. Oh, a million dollar horse.
They don't realize that million dollar horses really amount to
(34:07):
be nothing. The bread and butter of the game comes
from these fifty to one hundred, the one hundred and
twenty five thousand dollars horses that have bought at sales.
And here's another point maybe and this is not just
to pick on basket, but in my experience on the
East Coast watching Todd Pletcher bring out all these horses,
(34:27):
I mean his he would have maybe three hundred two
year olds, and on any given season and you see
one or two good ones, you go ooh Todd, or
ooh this guy or that guy. You know, he's got
all these horses. But you know, in reality it's a
shell game because you don't realize how much money goes
(34:49):
down the drain for them looking for that one stallion.
Speaker 7 (34:54):
That's right. Yeah, it's a crazy thing. I've talked about
it a number of years now and I just wanted
to get some of the numbers, the facts on the ground,
and I thought this one was pretty interesting. Yeah, those guys,
let me.
Speaker 10 (35:10):
Bring up Let me bring up another point. Two of
the most influential phillies that we've seen in the last
five years. Would you say Swiss Skydiver and Torpedo and
are one of the top two?
Speaker 7 (35:28):
Definitely, no question about it. Same barn.
Speaker 10 (35:32):
Do you remember what they paid for Swiss Skydiver? I
don't know, one hundred and twenty around thirty two thousand.
Speaker 7 (35:41):
Wow, a bargain, you know.
Speaker 10 (35:45):
So a lot of the times when people handicapped via
Austin prices, that auction price becomes zero once that horse
hits the track and has its first gallop.
Speaker 7 (35:59):
Well, I mean that's true. People are attracted to big numbers,
you know, and they like to walk around saying, you know,
I paid this much for that horse, and and that's
part of it. There's a lot of ego involved. There's
a lot of competitiveness involved. You know, I paid more
for this one than you did for yours. But in
the end they have to get in the gate and race,
(36:20):
and that's once they're in the gate, they don't know
how much they cost. Swiss Guide I ever didn't know Torpedo.
Anna doesn't know that there's horses running against her that
cost a lot more and somebody paid eight times as
much money for them. She just knows she's going to
beat them. So yeah, I just you know, I think
(36:41):
I hope some people are listening that own horses, were
thinking about own horses, and you know, there's a lot
of options out there, and you just don't always have
to go to the top two three guys. You should
also know that they just have too many horses. They
don't really give the care to your horse that other
trainers are going to do because they just have too many.
(37:02):
It's an assembly line. And when you think about Baffort
in particular, for this group, sixty two of them ran,
there's probably another thirty or forty that never made it
to the races. They just didn't make it through the program.
Speaker 10 (37:14):
Yet I don't know what don't make it.
Speaker 7 (37:18):
I don't know what those costs. That's right. These are
sixty two that made it. They're the ones that got
through the training, got through the program and were actually
able to make it to the races. Many of them
only ran once or twice and then they were done.
They ran well once or twice and that was it.
But many didn't make it. And so he probably had
about one hundred and I don't know what the rest
(37:40):
of them costs. But we're try looking at thirty five
or forty million dollars of horse flesh, the handpicked just running,
you know, in one group. So it's a it's amazing
to see it, and there's just I just thought it
was interesting to break it down. Those guys that buy
the horses, they call themselves the Avenger. I've been making
(38:00):
fun of them for years now because I think they're
the most chicken livered group of people in horse racing history,
pooling their money to try to beat the game.
Speaker 10 (38:11):
And that's that's another great point, fucking point. What's happening
is and I have dealt in the bloodstock business, and
I've gone out there to try to buy horses, by
the way, the last time, no years, I haven't because
all these guys are doing It's like there are a
bunch of brats and and and that they're going to
buy all the horses now because they don't want to
(38:33):
see some guy with a forty five thousand dollars year
lank purchase beat them their million dollar horse. So now
what they're doing, they're trying to buy everything. If anything
looks good from a good from the stallion, they deem
to be worthy, you know, they're basically buying it. So
they really it's become this this little billionaire boys club.
(38:55):
And actually this is a microcosm of society today. But
it's just amazing to me how all these guys go
out there and want to buy all the horses just
because they don't want to see some dude like me
go buy a fifteen thousand dollars horse and end up having,
(39:16):
you know, beating them at the thing. That's the bottom
line of the whole industry, that isn't it that somebody
does all the money and the life as the resort
to that kind of insecurity and selfishness.
Speaker 7 (39:32):
Yeah, I agree. If you're if you're that good, go
buy your own horse. Why you got to pull your
money with five or six or seven other really really
rich people so you can have fifteen of them and
spread it out. Now, man, come on and give yourself
a nixing.
Speaker 10 (39:46):
I just see some of these partnerships to be twenty
names in that horse. But somebody bought a hair on
the tail, you know.
Speaker 7 (39:56):
I mean, that's it's different than the you know, these
my excuse me to my race horse kind of stuff.
That's a little different. But that's just another version of it.
Where you can own, you know, point one percent of
a horse and feel like you have some involvement. That's
one thing. But these guys, you know, these these larger
groups where they're all kicking in half a million dollars
(40:17):
each or a million each or whatever, and they've got
twelve million, you know, in their in their kitty to
buy horses with. It's you know, it's a tax dodge.
It's a game, and like you said, they're looking for
the one stallion. It's they watch from afar. But it's
really really not good for the game because they also
(40:38):
don't care. So these horses, they push them and push them,
and if they run twice and don't make it, fine,
they're just hoping that one of the group does. So
it's a it's a strange game. And the sales part
of it, that whole hype and all that. You know
that that's just a whole nother slice of the game
that is well, we can talk about that another time.
(41:00):
We covered some of it here and it's a topic
for another time. And I know you've delved into it.
I followed it study that researched that a little bit
have been in many sales and interesting. It's a lot
of bowl and a lot of hype. But they're suffering
a little bit now too, and people are gonna have
to pay the piper soon. It's coming. So we'll see
(41:22):
how it plays out for all these folks down the line.
As the game shrinks, we'll see and the breeders start
to suffer a little bit too. But anyway, let's get
to what's going on on the track today. Tampa Bay
Derby Day. We see horses come out of here once
(41:44):
in a while and make a little noise on the
Kentucky Derby Trail, the nice track. It's a little bit
different surface down there, and I thought a pretty competitive
field of seven with some speed on the inside and
on the outside.
Speaker 10 (42:00):
Really interesting feel because she's got Owen almighty coming out
of the SAMs Davis and God bless the hearts of
these sprinters that want to go two turns, and they
really try hard first time around two turns, and usually
the second start is where they falter. It's where they
(42:22):
show that you know what I really belong back around
one turn. And it's a really interesting race because if
you take Chance mcpatrick at three to two on a
horse that really got embarrassed in the Breederscup, Juvenile, and
he got embarrassed by his own stablemate Bill Road, who
(42:46):
was sixty one to one and finished third, and it
was the only one making up any ground on the
two backfoot runners. I know because I played a trifecta
and he'll Road. I went, who's that.
Speaker 7 (43:00):
They can That's what everybody said. Yeah, yeah, he was
a turf horse. He ran twice over in Ireland. He
gave him the Chad Brown. He lingered at the back
of the field and then he you know, he made
a run and he was the only one really that
that did that and he was able to get up
for third. I forgot who he beat. It was actually
a photo for the for the show in there, but
(43:23):
that was his first race on dirt, first try as
a two year old. And now he's back after a
four month break something like that.
Speaker 10 (43:31):
And he's I picked him in the second hole. I'm
going to give Patch Adams one more try. He he's
another one that stretched out of a monster win at Churchill,
didn't break, wasn't quite ready, just made an early move,
got around and made a big move and then he's
(43:53):
the kind of horse that people said, wow, he gave
up third. Those are the kind of horses that when
you put him in front of horses, they become a
different individual. How many times we've seen that horse is
really good on the front end. For once he's placed
behind horses, he's not as effective. And I'm just going
to get Patch Adams another time, but I'm also looking
(44:14):
at Hill Road and I'm definitely playing against Chancer mcpatrick
in this spot. Now, I wanted to do something a
little bit of a uh just for people that are
handicapping Tampa Bay Downs today and they don't really play
Tampa Bay Downs very much. For example sprinting. I'm a
big believer in looking at those position studies because each
(44:37):
track is different. And for example, you know, a handicappers
say all the time and it doesn't matter if you
drew the rail going of six furlongs, five where alongs
or two miles, but he through the rail. It seems
to be something that horse players are a It's almost
(45:01):
like it's almost like the pod loss dogs when he
rings the bell, they salivate when you hear the horse
drew the rail. All handicaps but he drew the rail,
and they don't sit there and go back and take
a look and say, well, wait a minute, let me
find out sprinting at Tampa Bay Downs. What is the
percentage from the rail. Well, it's fifteen point three and
(45:24):
it's basically tied with the three hole in over two
hundred and forty eight starts to the best percentage on
the track sprinting in the post position. So when you
say through the rail, you've got to do your backup
and you've got to figure it out. And I'm going
to transition this to Fairgrounds, because Fairgrounds there's a and
(45:47):
I'm moving right over to the prayground racist and I've
got a first time starter that i think is very
very live. And I'm gonna say, as I'm pulling up
my sheet because I'm flipping back and forth, it's it's
in the eighth race. It's a maiden race with number
(46:08):
one Die Diary Yush and let me find it here.
Now that's yesterday, but it's it's the It's the eighth race,
maiden race, number one, Darry USh through the rail. But
if you go back and watch, I've got three different
(46:30):
video workouts that are listed on the on the on
the sheet in the workout report, including a very very
strong gatework at Oaklhan Park. So when I'm looking at
that and I'm going to say, okay, he drew the
rail of fairgrounds. What's the fair Grounds inside posts? Well,
it's nineteen point two percent, which is Jason. It's three
(46:55):
point two percent better than any other post and as
much as eight percent better than any other post sprinting.
That's pretty strong. The only one that had a little
bit clos there was twenty two starts from the eleven
hole with four wins at eighteen point two. But I
like to look at see where the horses have had
(47:16):
two hundred and thirty seven starts from a certain post
position to really get a good idea. So when people
and handicappers, but they threw the rail, and you hear
that all the time on television, you know when you
hear these talking heads, but none of them are checking
the nobody's checking the post position study. And I'm a
(47:37):
big believer in that the rail at Fairgrounds going two
turns and one turn, the one turn is nineteen point
two percent and the two turns races at Fairgrounds they're
sixteen point four percent from the rail. That's what you
want to know. And if you've looked at Derry Usch
and you see the videos, you see exactly the talent
(47:59):
we're talking about.
Speaker 7 (48:00):
And that's race seven, by the way, at at sur
round Side, Race seven, six furlong made in special weight.
Our use is the said is the rail horse number one.
Mike Stidham is the trainer and Ben Curtis is the
jockey in there. I believe three to one on the
morning line coming off that nice series of works that
(48:20):
you're talking about. But yes, it's it's vital to know
those statistics, and every track is different, the configuration is different,
the different set of trainers there, so it's important for
people to look. It's pretty easy to find that stuff.
It's on every website. I know you've got it and
use it and talk about it in all your analysis
every time post position is mentioned there in the statistics
(48:43):
because it is important. And likewise there's there's some posts
at certain tracks that are terrible and that are you know,
four percent five six percent every year and you want
to downgrade those horses because they're up against it. So
it's vile to know that stuff. Well, Bruno appreciate that.
That was good stuff. We'll keep our eye on Darry
(49:04):
Hush down on the rail for Mike's Didham, who's a
very nice trainer. And before I let you go, we
didn't talk about this, but flood zone, journalism, sovereignty, River
Thames and Barns. Of the five, who do you want
moving forward? Journalism? Mm hmm, okay, that was easy.
Speaker 10 (49:24):
The way I got to do this one more time.
I have so many windows open on my computer sometimes
it's ridiculous. That's why I couldn't go find the fair
Grounds race. But I got to say that Buddy drew
the rail. But journalism was impressive and he's a very
strong horse. He's got a lot of ability. And but
(49:45):
again let's take one race at a time.
Speaker 7 (49:47):
M h. Yeah. Now he's got to come back and
do it one more time, and then he's got to
do it in the Derby. But interested to see Mike
McCarthy have a horse like this. He's been down the
road before on his own and certainly with Pletcher, so
he knows the timing, he knows, you know, what needs
to be done, and he's got a big, big opportunity here.
(50:08):
So excited for him, and it's just good to see
really really nice horse put on a performance like that
and give us something to look forward to. Bruno has
always appreciated, sir, have a great weekend wherever you play,
and I know it's going to be multiple tracks and
we'll talk to you next Saturday.
Speaker 10 (50:24):
May your horse not draw the ray.
Speaker 7 (50:28):
Or depending you like him to draw the rail? Certain tracks.
As you pointed out, all right, we're going to come
right back with Jay Friedlander. This is inside racing. We
listen to AM eleven fifty. We'll be right back.
Speaker 8 (50:41):
The Patriot AM eleven fifty fans.
Speaker 2 (50:45):
Our classic meat is in full swing as we mark

Speaker 8 (51:43):
You're listening to the Patriot Am eleven.
Speaker 12 (51:46):
Fifty unmistakable sound of the double drummers, the double guitar.
Speaker 7 (51:56):
It's the Almand Brothers fan right, Jay, Absolutely, Good morning, Jason,
Good morning to you, sir.
Speaker 6 (52:04):
Still sad, fad losing Dwayne Alman so young master of
the slide guitar, Oh.
Speaker 7 (52:10):
My goodness, yeah really young? Uh yeah, it's a shame
put out a lot of good music for a young guy.
Though he worked NonStop, so there's at least there's a
lot of that.
Speaker 6 (52:18):
But yes, yeah, probably his epic performance was with Clapton
and Derek and the Dominoes on Leila.
Speaker 7 (52:25):
Agreed well on the whole album. Yeah you want to
play together? Sure? Oh look what happened? A little friendly competition,
guys having fun playing off each other. It's always nice
to see. But I'm sure they were both like, well, Okay, Wow,
let's see what I got. I can see what he's got.
Let's push, let's push each other a little bit. And
they did and we were the beneficiary, so that's that's
(52:48):
a good thing. Speaking of which, I was the beneficiary
of your comments on floor Zone. I took a second
and third look there and saw the private purchase going
into the brad Cox Barn with it nice sprint win.
I wasn't so sure as he was out in the
middle of the track all the way down the backstretch
like five or six wide, but impressive coming down coming
(53:11):
down the stretch. He just made it happen.
Speaker 6 (53:13):
And yeah, Jason, yeah he was pretty impressive. And hopefully
this is going on the air, but yeah, hopefully we'll
hopefully we'll see him in the Wood Memorial going forward.
He's definitely green. He's got a lot of learning to do,
(53:35):
but he's got.
Speaker 7 (53:36):
Enough time to do it.
Speaker 6 (53:37):
So I think that's something that we can look forward to,
and I think he's a legitimate comer. It's got a
long way to go, and he's not the most highly
regarded horse with his lack of experience, but taking a
long look at flood Zone going forward, I'm gonna give
everybody a tip here. This is a future book tip
for the Derby. And we talked about Hill Road earlier,
(53:58):
Jason and Bruno. There is a whole there's the Jason
Ry there.
Speaker 7 (54:03):
Yeah, I'm here, Okay, Hi Jason.
Speaker 6 (54:06):
Yeah, there's a horse you talked about with Bruno Hill Road,
and I wanted to point out the trainer of that
horse back in Ireland was Adrian Murray.
Speaker 7 (54:15):
He's a real up and comer.
Speaker 6 (54:16):
You think of, you know, other trainers like Charlie Appleby
and Aiden O'Brien, but Adrian Murray is one.
Speaker 7 (54:23):
To look at.
Speaker 6 (54:23):
He's got one back there called Titanium Emperor and he
just they made his debut in the patent stakes out
there on Tipeta and there was an ing O'Brien horse
Mount Kilimanjaro, and he just took him to school. He
opened up, fought for the pace a little bit, an
easy lead, just pulled away late Mount Kilimanjaro, who was
a group placed, just never looked back. This horse is
(54:48):
They're probably going to have a rematch in the UAE
Derby in April, but right now, look for Titanium Emperor
in the future books. The next one will be March
fourteenth and March sixteenth. Now is when you get a
price put ten on him, whether he ships over or not.
He's gotten twenty points and the nomination fees only four
thousand dollars. So remember that name. Come March fourteenth. Titanium Emperor.
Speaker 7 (55:09):
Okay, there you go. That's that's some deep information right there,
Titanium Emperor. I wrote it down. I'm on it. I'll
check it out. All right. Well, let's jump in. You've
got a couple of races, including the Tampa Bay Derby,
so you want to start there or San Anita.
Speaker 6 (55:23):
Yeah, actually I'm doing the race after the Tampa Bay Derby.
Speaker 7 (55:26):
And that's right.
Speaker 6 (55:27):
You know, he'll and we'll see how Hill Road does.
Hill Road. I think we'll have a better shot here.
I mean Delmar of course, plays like an asphalt highway,
and the Tampa They main track is a lot much
more fair, so I think he'll Road can improve off.
Speaker 7 (55:40):
Of that effort.
Speaker 6 (55:41):
We'll see how he does today. I mean, obviously Flaby
and Pratt went all the way out there so flabby,
and obviously, thanks Chancer mcpatrick's loaded for there today. We'll see,
and Chancer mcpatrick should also have a better shot there
over that track. We're looking at this maiden race and
race twelve just following it up. It's the last race
on the card, and there's another Chad Brown Flabyan Pratt.
(56:02):
Chad's really lined up the ducks for Flabian. He's put
on a lot of good mounts. Channel Check is from
Knight of Thunder Knight of Thunder Coincidentally enough, this is
the sire of Titanium Emperor, so a lot of those
are going on today and this one has a huge
work over the Peyton Park, you know, training facility, Bullet
(56:24):
forty four, so he's ready to go, but who knows
how good he is. There's one though that we do
know how good he is, and that's a worse I
kind of like here at number five Native Rose. Native
Rose just cut off late in his debut effort Broke twelfth,
was very green, was last mostly and just flew like
a rocket late and came up for a good third.
(56:45):
Was only length than three quarters off the winner. And
he was one hundred and seventeen dollars horse that day.
So I think Native Rose, this this Philly just has
a shot here. And since we don't know how good
the Chad Brown Horse is we do know what Native
Rose can do, and I think she's gonna get better,
all right.
Speaker 7 (57:03):
So the five Native Ros Race twelve at Tampa Bay Downs,
the last race on their huge card. There is going
to be a price, and like you said, showed a
lot of talent that first start. So win bet on
the five Native Rows. What else are we doing?
Speaker 6 (57:17):
Win and place bet bettett ten to win, twenty to
place fifty cent trifecta two five eight. We're gonna throw
Lady Authentic on top one two five eight ten with
all and then a saver with those other two one
ten with two five eight with two five eight and
let's jump to Santa.
Speaker 7 (57:33):
Anaiita, all right, and sant Anita we're going to talk
about race e eleven.
Speaker 6 (57:38):
Yeah, And you know, I don't think the winners here
are that much. I don't think the experienced horses here
are that much to brag about. Lonesome Slew, the favorite,
had a huge race, it came undert and the turf
race was okay, you know, nothing to really write home about.
So the one I like here and we'll do this
(57:58):
fast for a time, Number five Rocket under Flavian Pratt.
Speaker 1 (58:02):
Last time.
Speaker 6 (58:03):
Flabyan's a little busy today. You get Hector Burios, you
get ten to one and a well bred turf force.
Only two horses of one on the Santa Anita course,
this one in Potito. Potito's coming off of more than
a year layoff. Number five, Sir Rocket.
Speaker 7 (58:17):
All right, sir Rocket, going to be the play in
race eleven out at sant Anita, the last race there
as well. And I believe it's trybox one four five six,
is that right?
Speaker 6 (58:28):
That the exotics one, that's the main one, the saver
one dollar exact a wheel five with all one five
six with number four with number five, Sir rockets all.
Speaker 7 (58:38):
Right, sir rocket in the last. We're out. We'll talk
to everybody next week at a good luck
