And here's your host, Jason Levine here.
Speaker 8 (03:43):
Yeah, okay, I am Jason leviean this is Inside Racing.
And get a little bit of a switch for you.
This is not going to be my final show. Gotta
do one morning. I'll be hosting next week. So my
daughter is not giving births early down Under in Australia,
(04:06):
so that means that I will be here next Saturday
and then leaving probably the day after to fly across
the world. There we go, and we'll do my final
show next Saturday, which will also and this is also
a bit of a switch. Next week will be the
last show of Inside Racing started in two thousand and four.
(04:31):
We're going to wrap it up next week. So it's
this week and next week that will be that a
pump cake there for those of you that listen for
a long time, you know I grew up partly in
New York City. My first favorite athlete was Walt Fraser
Clyde Fraser still does the color for the New York
Next broadcast. I believe he just turned eighty. Anyway, Clyde
(04:56):
was the man, and one of his big moves was
the pump fake. That being put jumper, get guys up
in the air, lean in the land on them, you
get the foul and quite often would still be able
to make the jumper and go to the line for
three point play. So young me nine ten eleven years
old was watching that incorporated that into my game. If
(05:18):
you're not old enough to remember Walt Frasier and many
of you are not, king of the pump fake was
Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat. Unbelievable pump fake. Guys
were just flying through the air. And in the current NBA,
the person who uses the pump fake more than anybody
is the windiest player in league history, and that would
(05:39):
be Luka Doncic. He probably throws up forty to fifty
pump fakes a game, and guys fall for it most
of the time, not as much in the playoffs, but
he cries about it. If well, he cries about every call,
every single call, every single game for innyview that we're
(06:01):
upset that he was thrown out the other day. You
don't know much about refereeing or sports. When a guy
cries every call, every play, every game, it makes you
look bad as the ref and it gets old, and
some of the refs have had enough, thankfully, and somebody
tossed him. So we'll see what happens in the playoffs.
It's going to be interesting. It gonna be a lot
(06:22):
of fun in the NBA. Anyway, I got off a
little tangent there, but I did pump fake you, so
I thought you deserved that. So it's this week and
next week and that will be that. This week will
be a pretty normal show. I really enjoyed taking the
phone calls last week, also seeing some folks out at
the racetrack. Very nice of some folks to show up.
(06:43):
So we're going to take a few calls towards the
end of the show in the final segment and do that,
and then next week will be the we'll be the
final show, thank you to give take some more phone calls.
There will be at San Anita, so I have a
little something to talk about there. There's not this week,
(07:06):
and I guess one group I didn't want to thank
because we're not going to have any more of them
were the people that guest hosted the show. There have
been many, and I know I've forgotten a few because
it's been a long long time. But I saw two
of them at the racetrack last Saturday, Brad Free of
the Daily Racing Form, and it was very nice of
(07:26):
Brad to say, Man, he goes, oh, you're it's over, huh.
I said, yeah, he goes, Boy, I really enjoyed doing it,
and I have to say that I was not that
aware of that when Brad said it, but he said,
you know, the drive was just too far from him.
Back in those days, he had to do it in
the studio, so it was pretty far for Brad to
get in there really early in the morning. And anyway,
(07:50):
he was talking quite a bit about how he just
enjoyed doing radio so much, mostly because it was better
than TV. You didn't have to look into a camera,
you didn't have to dress up, you could just kind
of be yourself and let it flow. I know Brad
prepared like crazy to do the show, really enjoyed doing it,
and I appreciate him doing it for the time he
did did an excellent job. Also, Craig Harsman. I haven't
(08:12):
spoken to Craig in quite a while. He's a wonderful
writer for the Blood Horse magazine and for California Thoroughbready
work for the CTBA. Craig's been out of the game
for a long long time. He's also a teacher like
I am. And Craig did a great job when he
guests Wasted way back in the earliest days. I know
he was happy to do it, excited to do it,
(08:34):
and I hope he's doing well out there. One of
the better writers we've had in horse racing, and it
was a real loss for him to leave the game.
He has not been replaced by anybody of equal skill.
Can see that for sure. That's kind of a lost
art these days. So I want to thank those guys.
John Hernandez, somebody who believe he's working in Iowa right now,
(08:55):
is still there at the racetrack there Prairie Meadows. John,
and see him every year the Breeders' Cup. Wonderful guy.
He did a great job. And Mike Joyce, most recent
big guest host of TVG and fan Duel. Mike had
the the most sense of humor of any of the
guest hosts. Mike prepared and had a great time doing it,
(09:17):
and it was fun seeing him and I really appreciate
all the work he did. In the end, TVG didn't
want him to do it for some reason, which I
thought and he thought was just insane, some sort of conflict.
It's amazing what people who don't know the decisions they
can make for whatever reasons. That one was just nuts,
(09:42):
and we were both very disappointed because Mike did a
phenomenal job guest hosting the show and I appreciate everything
he did as well. Yeah, good guy, fun guy. Screw
TVG and FanDuel. They never sponsored the show, they never cared,
and then they ended up knocking him off for no
(10:02):
reason whatsoever. So and also their their CD is worse.
They have a little scroll at the bottom, so it's
too bad. A lot of people don't know this, but
I set up the deal between Fox sports dot Com
and at Fox Sports and TVG. My office was a
mile down the road here in LA when I was
the rice racing writer for foxsports dot Com, and TVG's
(10:26):
offices were right there, and I made that happen with
the help good gentleman named Benjamin who worked at Fox Sports.
Those were the crazy days. Anyway, They had me to
thank for that, but I got nothing for it for
over twenty years from them, so screw them, screw fan duel. Yeah, anyway,
I don't want to get off on that tangent, but
(10:46):
thanks to all those folks. A lot more thank yous
coming next week, have some fun stories. So all right,
let's get to it today. No racing at Santa Anita.
I was nice enough to keep their ads on the show.
They weren't supposed to be on there. They stopped as
of last week, but it was kind of a mistake
that we let go. So you heard George or Tuzar
(11:08):
Twoz are also a great guy, and thanks to George,
he's been very helpful and a good friend for twenty
plus years, So thank him. And that's his voice there
doing the Santa Anita spots. But Keenland and Oaklawn are running,
and we're going to talk about those two today with
Steve and Jay. Steve will be joining me in about
five minutes Jay. After the first break. Steve has races
(11:32):
from Keenland and Gulf Stream today. He didn't like anything
enough at Oakland, and Jay has this Keenland full card
and it is a very good full card meet there.
Everybody wants to run there. It's almost all full field
Leland twelve races and it's a heck of a card.
So Jay's got the full card from Keenland plus bonus
(11:57):
late pick four and pick five from Oaklawn on his
Chemoon full card. The big horse today is Torpedo. Anna
is the best dis staffer in the world and maybe
the best horse in the country. I think we're going
to get a chance to see her face the boys
again this fall. But anyway, she's in the Apple Blossom today.
(12:20):
Always a fun race. This was the race that announced
Zimyata one. I think it was three races here southern California,
but all on synthetic. She went to the Apple Blossom.
She had to beat Ginger Brew, who is the defending champ,
and not only did she beat her, that was that
(12:41):
might have been her most impressive performance. She loved running
on the dirt and she exploded in the Apple Blossom.
And then that's when a lot of people had to
wake up and go, wait a minute, this is something
different here a ZERI won a couple of apple blossom
was one of them, keeping her undefeated streak alive. That
was an all time, all time a lot of great
(13:01):
apple blossoms. Torpedo Anna today has to give weight. She should.
That's how horse racing was run for ninety years, one
hundred years. The great ones gave weight, tried to make
it equal. She's not giving that much weight. Five pounds
to everybody. Six to one horse she carries one twenty four.
She is the controlling speed as always, but there's quite
(13:23):
a bit of other speed in here, so that'll be interesting.
Maybe where's my ring? Gives her a runly?
Speaker 10 (13:32):
Not?
Speaker 8 (13:33):
She's beating her soundly twice. Where's my ring? Who is
number Where's my rings? Number five? Torpedo Anna is number six?
Where's my Ring? Trained by Val Brinkerhoff. This was the
Southern California horse. She ran at Oaklawn about three weeks
ago and ran off the charts, her best race by far.
(13:54):
It was the first second time four year old she
had run. Once here at a sprint she stretched out
on one by twelve. She's gonna have to do that
again to play with Torpedo Anna. Also, there's a wild
about Hillary. He's got some good early speech. She's just
outside in the seventh hole with Ramon Vasquez and Free
(14:16):
like a Girl also has some speech. She was second
to Torpedo Anna last time, so not a great betting race,
but a chance to see one of the best horses
in the world in action again today thanks to Trandor,
Kenny McPeak and the ownership group of Torpedo Anna. Of course,
the relies and mayors are not worth nearly as much money,
which is why we are able to see them run
(14:39):
as older horses far more often than the colts, because
that's the way the business is set up. They can
only produce one a year, so the males can produce
used to be about eighty Now it's one hundred and sixty.
Crazy that's helped ruin the game, so good job on that. Anyway.
Torpedo Anna goes in Race eleven at Oakland Park. It
(15:03):
is the Grade one Apple Blossom. They also have the
count Fleet Race eight. Very nice horse there named Booth'd
be very tough for Steve ask Meson written by his
son Eric. Don't see that very often. We have a
Southern California shipper anarchists in that race. I'll find that
because there was something interesting in there. I wanted to mention, Yeah,
(15:24):
it's race eight, and if you take a look at
booth number three in race eight there the studfee on
the Sire Matoli very fast horse was ten thousand dollars.
The sales price of this horse at Obsal was two
hundred and twenty five thousand, which is more than the
(15:44):
twenty to one ratio I've been talking about for I
don't know fifteen years on the show. So I figured
this was probably the last time to remind folks of that.
I think it's a great angle. It's usually best for
their first start or second start because it means that
the horse looked really, really good. The sale sale price
was twenty times more than the stud fee, or more
(16:05):
in this case it would be twenty two and a
half times. Sure enough, booth came out at Keenland in
twenty twenty three was five to one, and that system
proved successful again. This horse rolled by five at five
to one there. So learned that from the Jerry Bailey
tapes a long long time ago. I've always kept it
(16:27):
in mind and have made some money using that system.
So twenty to one is the ratio there sales price
to stud fee and booth Who's three to five today
is a good example of that in Race eight at
Oakland Park. It doesn't always work, but they're well meant
first out usually when that's the case, So Anarchists going
to try to turn the tables for Doug O'Neill, who
(16:49):
is on the Hall of Fame ballot this year and
almost won to d By World Cup. One of the
all time big money bad beats last week was getting
run down in the final fifty yards by Hit Show,
who looked like a different horse from the one I
bet in the Big Cap when he did no running
in the stretch, but in Dubai he found another gear
(17:11):
mixed though got a little tired. The announcer basically called
it over because it looked over, but it was not
over and Hit Show actually ran by and one by
about a length. But wow, tough beat for Doug O'Neill
and his crew, but they still got a ton of money,
so why not me. Doug O'Neill just enters everywhere, because hey,
(17:31):
you never know when it's going to be your day.
Anarchist does not run well the last two times, he
needs to turn it around here, but he does have
that class, so if Boots stubs his toe a little bit,
we'll see. That's Raise eight at Oaklawn Park again. The
big cart is Keenland. The two features are the Jenny
Wiley on the grass and the Lexington on the dirt
for three year olds. Jay is going to talk about
(17:55):
the Lexington, which is not a big Derby prep. There's
not enough points in this for a horse to get
into the Derby, so it will not affect the Kentucky Derby,
maybe the Preakness, so Jay's going to talk about that
with me and Steve is going to talk about the
Jenny Wiley Race ten, which is a really good filly
in Mayor turf race on just a wonderful card. It
(18:16):
came on. That's just how it goes this time of year.
And all the bad weather they had they got through it.
They ran this week and this card is very very good.
All Right, We've got a few things to talk about
with Steve. The Jenny Wiley, We're going to talk about
the Santa Needa Derby. We saw the wood and the
Bluegrass last week, so now we have a pretty certain
(18:36):
idea who's going to be in the Kentucky Derby. Rodriguez
finally got the job done for Bob Baffert. He tried
four times to have a horse to go to the
lead and win one of these big preps, and it
finally happened in New York where the other horses did
not have a tremendous amount of speed, not a great group,
and Rodriguez was able to get the lead with Mike
Smith and take them all the way. So Rodriguez is
(18:57):
in the Kentucky Derby along with Citizens Bull, who was
so disappointing although not shocking. I kind of called that
on the show in the Santa an Needa Derby, finishing
off the board. And it looks like MATICTT Road, who
failed to take them all the way in Arkansas, is
going to be in the Kentucky Derby too. We'll see
if Baffort runs all three of them. The Bluegrass East
(19:21):
Avenue finally showed up again. He's got great speed. He
got run down by Burnham Square. They're both going to
be in the Derby, and East Avenue adds a lot
of pace and so that may make it far more
difficult for Rodriguez or Citizen Bull or Matict Road to
take them all the way, which is what Baffort usually
tries to do. One of those will try to do it.
(19:42):
But if East Avenue does run and looks like he will,
that is a very very fast horse. He needs the break.
If he does, he's going to the lead. That's what
he does. And Burnham Square is a nice horse. He's
one to watch in the Derby to hit the board
at the price. And then the Santa Anita Derby. Let's
talk about that with Steve. Bring him on now, Steve,
good morning.
Speaker 10 (20:03):
Ah, good morning Jason. Great to hear your voice.
Speaker 8 (20:07):
Yeah, how are you, sir?
Speaker 10 (20:10):
Well I'm doing I'm doing great. I'm I'm excited to
talk a little bit about these three year old races.
I've got a little bit of a take on both.
The race in Kentucky that they ran on I believe
was that Tuesday that they ran that one that was
kind of crazy. And of course are our San Anita
Derby as well.
Speaker 8 (20:27):
Well, let's do it. Let's start in Kentucky with the bluegrass.
Speaker 10 (20:33):
Well, you know what's crazy about the bluegrass, Jason is
is you know you asked me to keep my eyes
a little bit close on Keenlan for this show, and
I have been doing that, and I've just got a
very very interesting statistic for the fans. They've run ten
races at a mile and a sixteenth Jason, nine have
been one wire to wire nine out of ten. That's crazy.
(20:57):
Now that the Bluegrass is a mile and an eighth
and they have run four races at that distance and
they've actually been one at each where I can wire
to wire, one just off pace, one off pace, and
one way off pace. But I've got to give a
little bit of extra credit to the winner of the
Bluegrass because that track was so speed favoring the first
(21:18):
week that they ran and all the route races that
maybe that's a horse that the fans can add and
their superfecta that might be a little bit of a price.
And that's that's the Burnham Square horse. I don't I'm
sure where he'll be. He'll be a little bit more
unto the radar because they ran that race on a
non weekend day, Jason, I believe, And you know, as
(21:39):
far as the front runner goes, I think that's another
horse that always seems to get bet. He did finally
run as good race, But I'll tell you what, if
there's as much speed as as we think with Rodriguez
in there with with Staffort's other horse from here, I
don't know. I don't know how a horse is going
to hang on in the front end in that race.
(22:00):
I guess Wood Memorial Jason actually charted pretty well that
one for one final time was faster than the older
horses ran the mile in a quarter. I know it's
a tough to compare distances, but I actually thought that
Rodriguez time was decent. Boy, horses from the Wood have
done nothing. And the way he was so non competitive
(22:20):
here against the horses here in southern California, I'm not
really sure how that horse can win. And I know
there's going to be other pace to go with him,
So if that helps clear the picture up a little bit.
But I've got to give the horse a little bit
of credit Burnham square for winning back there on a
track that is absolutely speed favoring.
Speaker 8 (22:40):
Well, that's important. He's a nice horse. He's won another
nice race. Like I said, I think he has a
good chance to hit the board. There are figures to
be pacing the Derby as you just laid out, especially
with East Avenue in there. A few breaks he's going
He's fast. He only knows one way to run, and
we know one or two of the Bafferts is going
to go with him. We're right next to him or
right behind him, or try to in front of him,
(23:00):
So that could and likely will set it up for
someone like Burnham Square, who, like you said, it is
going to fly under the radar. With that race being
moved off the weekend, a lot of people didn't see it,
weren't aware. He's not a big name, not big name connections,
so he's an interesting stalker who, like you said, went
against the track profile and probably should be upgraded for that.
(23:24):
Santa Anita Derby. Journalism got the job done. A weird race.
It was the baffert has two in a five horse
race deal where one of them is kind of blocking
for the other. Barnes was the blocker, Citizen Bull was
the leader. Didn't work out for either of them, but
they put journalism in a very difficult spot going in
(23:46):
into turn and Berto recently had to do some writing
and make some decisions under pressure to get journalism clear,
and then he was able to get the job done.
And looking back at it, what.
Speaker 10 (23:57):
Are you thinking, I mean, there was a gentleman that
was screaming right next to me about how bad the
ride was, that Rispoley gave him, that he got him
in all kinds of trouble. And you know, I'm not
going to say that I totally disagree in what that
gentleman is saying, but it's amazing how emotional people get. Again,
I was there live with you, and this guy was
just so unbelievably passionate, and I didn't want to watch
(24:20):
the race. Then again, I went home, took a couple
of days, and then I watched the race again. And
I'll tell you what I thought. Jason was journalism. Wasn't
doing any running. He was just not running down the backside,
and he put himself into you know, horses get in
bad position when they're not firing, and I just didn't
think he was firing. And when he finally got out,
(24:40):
and I know it was late, but he had just
not run well the first three quarters of that race,
and he ran phenomenally the last quarter of the race.
So what do you make of that? You know, I mean,
if I'm playing him, I'll tell you one thing. I
do not want him to draw inside because if he's
not moving down on the inside, and he gets bogged
down and all the speeds Art's coming back into him.
(25:01):
I think he's going to have a tough time from there.
So for me, the draw is going to be very
important for journalism. And you know, I would think they
got to do something to keep that horse outside and
not get him bogged down inside because if he starts
not running down there and it's going to take a
while for him to get going. You know, I just
haven't seen too many horses come absolutely flying in the derby.
They what they do, Jason, is is they make that
(25:24):
early run like the horse did last year. And you
make that early run, you're making it so that you're
into the turn, you're in contention. And if you're not
in contention by the time the turn is and you've
still got seven or eight lengths to make up, it
certainly can be done. But it's certainly not easy, and
that horse is going to be a very short price.
Speaker 8 (25:41):
Yeah, that's a good point. He's interesting. He seems like
a horse that really needs to be ridden too, because
that was the case the two races back. He you know,
recently really had to get go to work on him
on the turn to get him going. He's a big horse.
I think he's kind of a heavy horse, and you
got to ride him. You know, you've got to get
after him a little bit. Once he does get in gear,
(26:03):
he's the best horse in the crop. I think he's
proven that. But like you said, the Derby has twenty horses.
You know, getting in gear is not automatic, so keeping
him outside is important. I agree the draw is important,
and he is an interesting horse. For that reason, you
got to ride him. Those horses are always a little tricky,
(26:25):
So he will be favored, I think. I don't think
there's any doubt about that. I don't know how strong
a favor he'll be. It's Mike McCarthy. It's not one
of the big name guys, but yeah, he's very very interesting.
He's certainly beat all the Baffords here. He beats six
of them in three consecutive races, which is saying something.
(26:46):
And the other horse to note is Baeza, who got
completely screwed over by the new Derby point system where
they take points away from a race. If you don't
have six horses in the race, you have less than six,
they drop the point value, and if there was one
more horse in that race, and it could have been
a crap horse who did nothing. Baeza would be in
(27:07):
the Derby. But as it stands, because it was only
a five horse race, he is on the outside looking
in and needs, I believe two more or three more
horses to fade out in order to get in. He
ran very well in only his fourth career.
Speaker 10 (27:23):
Well he did, Jason, he sure did. And I'll tell
you what after going wine throughout the race, and not
only did he continue on after the wire, he galloped
out back in front of Journalism. Obviously the race is
going to be a longer distance, and this is a
horse that's certainly has much less experience, but really gained experience.
I know that was just a five horse race, but
(27:45):
I think that was a big experience that he needed.
You get great connections, and Jason, there's a chance you
could get six or seven x what you're going to
get on Journalism. I wouldn't be shocked to see Journalism
at seven to two as a favorite, and Baza somewhere
near twenty to one on or maybe even higher. And
I'm looking at that. I've been looking at it for
the last couple of days. I think there's a chance Jason,
(28:06):
I think there's a better than fifty to fifty chance
that he gets in the race.
Speaker 8 (28:10):
Well, I can tell you somebody holding a future book
ticket at sixty eight to one on him. But I
want him in there. Oh he was in the last
future pool, and I thought it was worth taking a
shot at because obviously he had to run first or second.
I thought in the Santa Anita Derby to get in.
(28:30):
And he's talented, like you said, John Sheriffs as the
trainer heard great things, so I thought, sixty eight to one,
you don't have to put a big bet down. I didn't,
but you know I got money on him at sixty
eight to one, So come on, let him out, get
him in the race.
Speaker 10 (28:45):
Let's go. I hope you get in.
Speaker 8 (28:49):
Man oh Man, me too. Come now, So screw the
Derby points thing. Really penalized in California, which is really
the only place you're ever going to see under you know,
six horses in a prep race. Maybe they'll reconsider it,
maybe not. I don't know. Churchill downs they suck pretty much.
Everything they do sucks for racing. They only care about
(29:12):
two days and they screwed their Derby up. They've got
horses in there. They shouldn't be in there instead of
by ASA because they made this stupid rule. So another
screw up by them. Anyway, he's a nice horse, very
nice horse, and it would be interesting to see if
he he probably will be the last horse in if
he slides in. I believe both Japanese horses are coming.
(29:34):
There's one named Luxor Cafe that looks like the best
Japanese horse. He ran phenomenally well last time out. People
could watch that tape forever. Young certainly came awfully close
to winning last year and turned out to be a
great race horse. Lux Or Cafe looks really good. So
there's a wild card for you, and it's going to
(29:54):
be a fun fun derby. Yeah, we know who's in there,
pretty good at idea. Who's in there now? We'll find
out more in the next couple of weeks. Is we'll
get an injury or two and somebody will decide not
to run, what have you. We'll see, But otherwise the
field is pretty much set, and yeah, it's going to
be it's going to be interesting and exciting to see
(30:16):
how this plays out going into the derby on May third.
All right, we uh, we're going to talk Keelan with you.
Your Gulf Stream horse got scratched. You were going to
talk about, So for the radio, you're going to talk
about the Jenny Wiley right race Tenet Keenland. Right.
Speaker 10 (30:34):
We are, Jason, And it looks like the track condission
is already up. They have had They did not have
turf racing on the first couple of days there. They
have had war days of turf racing. I thought today
might be the first day they had the turf list.
It is firm, but it is already listed as good.
Maybe keep an eye on that. I would certainly move
my horse up a little bit on a on a
(30:54):
on a on a course that was firm. But it
looks like that they had enough rain there that this
may they'll be good. There are a ton of imports
in this race, and I'm going to take a little
bit of a stand against the two horse, a horse
named Choica. I believe I'm pronouncing that right, But that's
about a fifty to fifty shot there, Jason. The reason
(31:14):
I'm taking a shot against his horses is I have
noticed that these horses from Dubai that have shipped to
here have had a little bit of a tough time.
I know this one has run against some very nice
horses over there and certainly looks like one with a
good record. I am playing against that one based on
that fact. There are a lot of other ones that
look good, including her. I'm just going to try to
beat that one again. I've noticed that these horses that
(31:36):
have shipped from Dubai have not run as well have
the horses that have shipped from Europe. So again we're
playing against that one. I like the five be your best.
Jason just looks like a new mayor since she shipped
to this bar and sappy Joseph barn. And one of
the things that they've done with her, Jason, is they've
let her run. It looked like if you look at
(31:57):
her races and the pps, they're going to the lead,
then they're not going to lead, then they're going close
to the lead, and they're not going close to the lead.
And it looks like since they got in this barn,
they said, you know what, we're going to put this
horse up close to the lead. And look who the
rider changes to today, Jason, it's none other than I
ride or Teez. If you're going to have a rider change,
that's who you want. What a meat he had down
(32:19):
at Gulf Stream, and all winter long he has been
riding the turf absolutely fabulously. The speed to me looks
like the seven horse Keyhole Beach. And this is a
horse with a terrific record. It's a Philly with from
the Wesley wardbarn, and she's a first time four year old,
makes her very very dangerous on the front end. But boy,
as sharp as Be your Best is, I think if
I can get six to one, I see that zero
(32:40):
for two record here at Keenland. But I just think
that she's a new mayor since she's in this barn,
and I think she's a new mayor because they've made
the decision that hey, we're going to put her close
to the pace, and if we look at the pace
in this race, it looks like two of them. It
looks like Keyhole Beach is going to clear and be
your Best is going to get a very loose clear
(33:00):
trip in the second hole. And I like that just fine,
especially with this rider. So for me, it's the five
be your Best going to play this one to win,
and we're gonna use We're gonna use five here in
the try, Jason, there's a couple of horses in here
that I had left out and reloking at this race.
I think I want to use those horses. So we
are going to use the one excellent truth. I'm going
(33:21):
to use a long shot, the three. This horse was
only a length in a quarter behind Keyhole Beach and
looks like an improving four year old with Jose or
Teas riding. I'm gonna use the sixth Jabbara. This is
a horse that looks very, very solid coming from overseas,
and she was second to portet Fortuna. That one really
caught my eye. The seven Keyhole Beach that I mentioned before,
and the eight Sacred Wish who really seemed to turn
(33:42):
things around here at delmar In the Matriarch, and she
was second to be your Best down at Gulf Stream
as well, and I left her out that day and
I'm not gonna leave her out today. So it's the
five first and second in the try with one, three, six,
seven and eight and a win bet on the five
be your best.
Speaker 8 (34:01):
All right again, that's raised ten to Jenny Wiley. And
since you brought up the two choicea so I don't
know how to pronounce it either. I have a little
story here, so bear with me. It's kind of a
funny one. The trainer of this horse, do you have
any idea about this guy, Simon Crispert. I do not.
Speaker 10 (34:19):
I'm very interested to listen to what you got to say.
Speaker 8 (34:22):
Well, here you go. So the trainer, his name is
Simon Crispert. He's been training at a high level for
the past i'd say probably five years. Prior to that,
he was the spokesman for Godolphin. He was the guy
who well he was their spokesman. He was the one
who did all the interviews. He kept everybody away from
Sheik Muhammad. He was the point of contact for Godolphin
(34:45):
for a good fifteen to twenty years. That was his job.
And when I was writing my book, or I got
the deal to write the book, I wanted to obviously
interview Sheik Muhammad and I wanted to see the Godolphin
operation in Europe. So this was the guy I had
to contact. It's not that easy to get to him,
but I got to him and I told him I'm
(35:07):
going to be coming over to England and I would
love to see the Godolphin operation at Newmarket. It's the
biggest one there. It's one of the biggest in the world,
and obviously I want to talk to Sheikh Muhammad and
I want to talk to you. And he said, his
wonderful British accent, Oh you know, all right, then, yeah,
you let me know. You know, when you get closer
(35:30):
to it, you've got a date, you know, you let
me know and we'll see. So I said all right
and kind of left it at that, and I thought
that was that. So a few months later, I made
my plans and I got over to Europe and I
got to England and I called him and I said,
all right, I'm here. I'm in London. I'm going to
(35:50):
New Market in a couple of days. You know, we
can we do this. And there was a long pause
on the end of the phone, like five seconds right
forever that's silence, and I hear you'll hear I said, yeah, here,
I'm in London. Oh so you were serious, exactly. That
(36:11):
was my reaction. I went, what do you mean so
I'm serious? He goes, oh, well, I didn't know. You know,
I mean a lot of people say things and they
say they're doing this or that, but so you're writing
the book, you'll hear I was like, do we have
to see this again? Yeah, I'm here and I've only
got like four days, you know, this is the deal.
And there's another long pause, and I thought, come on,
(36:33):
and then he started laughing and he said, well, all right,
then you've come a long way, so let's do this.
I went, oh, okay, great. He goes two days from
now I know, and this was huge for me. I mean,
I needed, you know, to see this and do this.
And he goes, all right. I think it was a Monday.
He said, all right, on Wednesday morning, you meet me
(36:53):
at Newmarket at six point thirty in the morning out
on this on these hills where we train. And I
went okay. And so I got to new Market, took
the train, got there, stayed with some nice people that
helped me out and they showed me where to go
in the morning, and I got a lift at six am.
And at six thirty in the morning, I got dropped
(37:13):
off on a road in the middle of nowhere what
looked kind of like a forest, and I'm standing there
it's freezing, and a car pulls up and this guy
hops out and he's got his boots on. He's already
he's got his jacket and it's Simon and he couldn't
have been friendly or nicer, you know now that I
was there, And so their whole string came by, and
(37:34):
this was when they had Sake Fantastic Light, both of
whom you know, I mean, Saki is one of the
great turf horses of all time, almost won the Breeders Cup.
So they all come by and it was a very
good dirt horse too, huh yeah exactly, and Fantastic Light
won the Breeders Cup turf. I mean, this was just
a loaded grin. There was like eighty of them and
he's pointing them out as they come by, and the
(37:55):
trainers there. So we had a wonderful day and he
showed me the whole operation. Couldn't have been a night
her guy. And so that's how it all played out.
And he stayed in that role for a long time
and then became a trainer. And I think, of course,
because he met so many people as Sheik Muhammad spokesman,
he had owners you know that he could that he
could get and so now he trains with his son.
(38:17):
That's how old we are that his son is now
a trainer. But anyway, I started seeing his name in
the PPS. I'm like, hey, that's Simon. I know him.
Uh So that's the story. It was really a really
funny one.
Speaker 10 (38:30):
And anyway, that's how that goes.
Speaker 8 (38:32):
So that's who that horse is. And I'm sure he's
a Keenland trying to meet some new owners and do
his thing, and he shipped in for this race.
Speaker 9 (38:40):
So so there you have it.
Speaker 10 (38:41):
You didn't expect that, right, I did not expect that.
Great story and still trying to beat the guy.
Speaker 8 (38:50):
Absolutely, that's horse racing. Yeah, this was not. She was
not a great affiliate over there. She ran on the
synthetic a lot. That's never a good sign. But her
races in Dubai we're really really good. Like you said,
they struggle. Anyway, we got to run Steve as always
a pleasure. They're back at Santa Anita next week. It'll
be our final show. I know you'll have a horse
(39:11):
for everybody. Your unbelievable role continued with miss Roberts last week.
We had mentioned that people know though you haven't missed
and I don't know seven out of the last nine
weeks or something crazy, but she was great. You hit
to pick four. We've had five winners on top last Saturday,
so beautiful job. Keep it going one more week and
(39:32):
we'll go from there.
Speaker 10 (39:34):
All right, Jason again, enjoyed it, and everybody have a
great day out there, enjoy yourselves and we'll we'll look
forward to talking everybody the final week next Saturday.
Speaker 8 (39:44):
Very good, all right. It's the Pollock, the best in
the business, on a furious role here and he's got
golf stream and Keeenlin for you today and it's out
of town line. We're taking our break, Jay Friedlander on
the other side. This is inside racing on the f.

Speaker 9 (42:58):
Morning, Good, morning jason how Are you i'm, doing. WELL
sir a big game for your team coming up With,
the warriors?
Speaker 8 (43:07):
Isn't it huge game For, the clippers who haven't lost
in a, long time but Being the clippers could end
up as the seventh seed in the play in if
they don't, win tomorrow so.
Speaker 10 (43:16):
They're on.
Speaker 8 (43:16):
A roll but. We'll see and they have A Healthy.
Kawhi leonard so whoever Gets the clippers in the first
round better bring their big. Boy shoes That's all i'm going.
To say, he's back. He's healthy we don't know how
long he'll last, right now he's as good as anybody in.
The league and if anybody doesn't, believe that they're about to.
Find out so it's been a really. Fun run, and
(43:40):
yeah we'll know a lot more tomorrow as far as
what the playoffs are. Gonna entail but they're going to
be good In, the west that's. For sure it's Loaded.
Out west, so.
Speaker 9 (43:49):
Yeah, absolutely hey since It's a keemlin, FOCUSED that i
just want to touch On The bluegrass, AND yeah i
DID think i was probably as impressed with that prep
as any of the preps. OUT there I Thought river thames,
for instance who, You know bruno wasn't really Thrilled With
todd fletcher's crop, this YEAR but i think that one's
kind of coming, in HAND and, i think, you know
(44:11):
it's still a, little green but still has. Some upside
it wouldn't surprise me if you move forward off. Of
that but obviously the two first, Place Finishers burnham square looked,
very impressive like he'll want every inch of a mile and.
Speaker 10 (44:24):
A QUARTER but i was.
Speaker 9 (44:26):
Really impressed the, other horse The Front Rudder. East avenue
he really really showed me that he's gritty. And game and,
you know obviously if he breaks as, you mentioned he's
going to go to the front and we'll see if
he has any competition. Up front but if, he doesn't
(44:46):
if he can clear, THE field I Think east avenue
is a horse you've got to use in your trifecta
and SuperFect.
Speaker 8 (44:52):
THE wagers i disagree ONLY because i think there's zero
chance he clears. The field i'll say it. This way
if he clears, the field maybe he hits. THE board
i don't think there's any chance with three bafforts in
there that all want to go to, the front that
he clears. The field there is no way that all
three of those guys are going to let him go,
(45:14):
no way. We'll see that makes. It interesting, And Yeah
river Thames, and grande who Ran In new york and
ran pretty well In the wood both Will Represent todd
pletcher who doesn't win the, derby often but he gets
there and that seems to be most of the battle
for he and. His owners, but yeah it's going To
be its gonna be a lot of fun moving forward
(45:35):
to to see how this all. Shakes out, But Yeah,
east avenue he kind of he, didn rebreak but he really.
Dug in looked like he was going to fade out of,
the picture and he dug in and made. It tough
so that. Was impressive in the bluegrass agree ON that
i thought he was once he, was done he was
done and he, was not so we hadn't seen that from,
him before, All right so you've got to remind Folks
(46:01):
the quelan full cart and quite a. Full cart. It
is these are fun when you get these kind of
full Fields a quelan, dirt turf it's. Just great and
you've got the bonus late pick four pick Five, from
oaklawn Including Obviously, torpedo ANNA who i believe you agree
as a single in. That sequence so you got one
(46:21):
race from. Both places let's. Jump in you want to Start, At, oakland.
Speaker 9 (46:25):
Yeah well Start. At oaklawn, AND yeah i really thought
the pick five when you have a free square, like
That Because torpedo anna is not only the best filly
in the, country easily but she may be the best
horse in the country now because when you look, at it,
You Know forever young did not follow up his good Effort.
In dubai it was kind of like a. Mediocre third.
You Know Obviously sierra leone is not yet back to
(46:48):
where he was, last year and, you know, on horses,
you know take some, time off you never know if.
They will he, probably will but he's not. There yet
and unfortunately we had the Untimely Pass, singer ferocious, you
know the one big horse that Beat Per. Pino anna
so that's one she's not gonna have to worry about.
This year, so yeah she may be the Best and
(47:08):
i'd be frankly shocked if she doesn't run In The Breeders.
Speaker 8 (47:10):
Cup, classic yeah if all, PLAYS out i think, she
WILL and i think she may take him on. Before that,
we'll see, All Right, so oakland you're Gonna do race, NINE.
Speaker 9 (47:21):
Yeah i thought it was a. Competitive RACE and i
look at the favorite here to, Number Two tis Wick.
And Strong brad cox, claimed This And brad cox just has,
this huge huge record off a claim fifty seven wins
when he drops him off. A CLAIM but i think when,
You know brad saw this one kind of ran a
sort of a, mediocre race and then that one was,
(47:43):
already dropped, and wow that one came up, a CLUNKER
and I think brad had a look. At that, my
god WHAT have i spent my? Money on, you know
when you when you fade to, eighth place nineteen. LENGTHS
behind i don't know that one more class drop level
from twenty five twenty thousand is going to do. THE
job i can't think of A horse i'm trying to
(48:04):
beat More Than Tis. Wicked strong i'm not really that
impressed with the Second choice Touch of, glam either who
is just a. Plotting PLOTTER so i think there's a
very good chance for a. Price here and THE one
i like is Number Eight. Indie Charge indie charge is in,
fine pedal as, they say dropping actually from a higher
level than the favorite is dropping from thirty, five thousand
(48:27):
showed some fine speed and now on the drop to,
TWENTY thousand I think indie charge looks like he's going
to be very capable in this spot at a very
fair six to.
Speaker 8 (48:37):
One, price yeah he could take him all. THE way
i agree The eight. Indie charge and we're talking about
race Nine At oakland park in that pick, Five sequence
so the win bet on The eight indie charge.
Speaker 9 (48:49):
And, exotics yeah an interest, of time we're just going
to use the. Numbers here we'll use number eight with
one two four seven with all and then the. THREE
sabers i like to play the best, ones twice eight
with one two, four seven with one two, four seven
one two, four seven with eight with one two four
seven and one two four seven with one two four
(49:10):
seven with Number eight indi charge and a nice winning
place bet on Number eight.
Speaker 8 (49:14):
Indie, Charge okay and again that's part of that pick
five Sequence at oaklhoma that includes the count fleet and
also The Torpedo Anna. Apple blossom, all right let's Jump
to keeland and stick with. Race nine and this Is,
the lexington which will not affect, the derby but might affect.
Speaker 10 (49:30):
The, previous yeah no question.
Speaker 9 (49:33):
About it and this is another CASE where i think
the favorite is beatable Number Seven Prador chad Brown And
flavian pratt obviously a, formidable combination especially. On turf this
is not, on turf and they haven't had a hot meat.
Down there they are ten percent, wins together so not that,
you know this is really not their their. Prime form Brown.
(49:56):
AND pratt i think you know when they Moved To,
Belmont saratoga Well not, belmont yet but when they Moved,
TO saratoga i think you know they're gonna catch. On
fire this one's only won an. Optional claimer he won,
it impressively but it's an optional claimber the Second choice
gostar gets A rad ortiz and that one ran the Fastest,
speed figger but that will Only, beat maidens so we're
(50:17):
gonna give. Another shot we Talked about michael McCarthy connections
Before and, umberto recently and This. Horse bullard this is
now the second choice in the McCarthy barn to the one. You,
mentioned however at One point bullard was considered the. First
choice are that huge Grade Three bob hope win Just
sat chiley and just blew Away That bob hopefield in
(50:40):
fast time like a ninety nine brist figure and won
by almost five wines and was. Expected Well The san
decente did not do. As well he just wasn't Up
to barnes. That day but This is bullard's first time around,
two TURNS and i just think he doesn't want to
sprint with these. Best SPRINTERS but i think this one's
just made for. Two turns Sally gun runner. WAS sprinter
(51:00):
i Mean gun runner made all his money going. Long
DISTANCES so I think bullard at nine to two is
a steal TODAY and i.
Speaker 10 (51:07):
Love him that's.
Speaker 8 (51:08):
Very, INTERESTING yeah i was interesting to see where he
resurfaced and it. Was here i'm. With you he's a
very talented colt and against this group he could be.
Long gone so it's The three bullard hoping to get
the nine to two There and mike In the lexington.
Race nine you're gonna use three horses, with, Him.
Speaker 9 (51:26):
Right yeah we're gonna use. THE two i mentioned the Two, Favorites,
goscorn prater but The one i'm hoping to Get, is
touchy who's eight, to one and he was like four out,
of five five out of six in the MONEY only
i missed the, board once a perfect. Trifecta horse so
we'll play a dollar trifecta three with six seven nine
with six, seven nine and then we'll play the full
(51:46):
tickets three with six seven nine, with all three with
all with six, seven nine six seven nine with three,
with all and the little sabers six seven nine with
six seven nine with number.
Speaker 8 (51:55):
Three bullard, all right there, You go mike McCarthy trying
to go with his second string here to win the
electionton which is kind of a second, stringth prep so it.
Makes sense so it's a three bullard in race Nine.

MADE it i think there was a lot of folks
that weren't sure. About that up in the. Press box
it's kind of an, odd place the. Press box a
lot of attitude, up there a lot, of intrigue at
least back in. The day there's nobody. There anymore but
we made it twenty. Two years very proud of having, done,
(53:27):
that and as somebody told me the, other day making
a little bit of a, mark here certainly In southern
california and in racing. In general it's been a really.
FUN run a lot of people. TO thank i mentioned it,
last week but the big One is STEPHEN christ i read.
His books he's written some wonderful. Handicapping books he's one
of the great pick six players of. All time he
(53:49):
was running the racing. For him he had just bought
it with a group and try to turn, it around
and he did and he's the one that got me
the shot with. The book and THEN when I said
i wanted to do, radio shows, he, said well we'll

your outlook and most of all your candor about. The
industry and it's just refreshing to hear some of those
things that horse players.
Speaker 6 (56:49):
Deal, WITH.
Speaker 8 (56:52):
Well i. APPRECIATE that i kind of went into it
wanting to represent the horse player. That way try to
give people insight into why the handicappers do what, they
do what they, look for what things that you might
be able to look for in the hopes that people
would do what you did, with it which is use
something that, you've learned make, it yours and make a,
(57:13):
massive score because that's what horse players are all. Looking
for it only. Takes one you remember the date as
well as, you should and as far as, the candor.
Speaker 10 (57:24):
That's THAT'S who.
Speaker 8 (57:25):
I am so that was going to be what it
was from, day one and if it, worked, Out great if,
it didn't Find but i'm glad that you. APPRECIATE it
i certainly had a lot of fun being able to
have a platform and nobody. Stopped me so if nobody
stops and you, keep, going right that's kind that's kind
OF how i looked.
Speaker 10 (57:43):
At it What's?
Speaker 8 (57:45):
