And now it's time for Inside Racing, full hour of
coverage on everything going on in the sport of kings
here in southern California and around the country.

Speaker 4 (02:10):
And here's your host, Jason Levine.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
Yeah, yeah, all right, I am Jason Levine. This is
Inside Racing for the last time. How weird is that?
But here we are, Oh boy, Yeah, pretty strange. All right,
let's just let's get to it, get rolling, because you're

(02:36):
going to be part of it. So I'm going to
do this show a little bit differently. I'm I'm going
to do a pretty short opening here, I know it's different.
Going to bring Steve on earlier than usual, in about
four or five minutes or so, and he's got a
play from Santa a Nita. Got something to talk about

(02:58):
with the three year olds, many of whom worked out today,
So you'll see a lot online if you look about
workouts and people's opinion of it and anyway that's happening.
So horses remain on track for the Kentucky Derby. Steve's
going to talk I believe a little bit about that,
and Jay is going to follow right after Steve, so

(03:21):
switching it up a little bit there. Jay's got a
pick from Santa Anita as well. I believe we have
races eight and ten to close it out for you,
and after that we're going to take a break, take
some of your phone calls, so I will remind you
of the number. It is eight two oh eight hundred

(03:42):
sorry seven seven five two oh eleven fifty seven seven
five two oh eleven fifty. If you want to call
in something to say, question, to ask, a story, to tell,
the last bunch of calls more awesome. So one to
do that and share the final show with some folks.

(04:04):
We've been sharing this for some of you for twenty
two years, some for two years, five ten, whatever. It's
been a pleasure for me to be part of your
morning routine, my morning routine for a long time. Now
the note, we'll run this long, but here we are.

(04:27):
So I've got some stories to tell, talk about some things,
a lot of thank yous to give a couple I
guess we'll call them screw yous. Tell a few of
those out as well, but a lot of thank you
a lot of people I want to mention. That'll lead
to some other stories and have some fun with that,

(04:48):
talk about the state of the game, et cetera. So
that's the plan for today. The website. I wanted to
mention the Racinjason dot com website. So many of you
have gone to I've been pretty lazy with it. That's
going to stop. We're going to do more with the website.

(05:08):
But the most important thing I'm sure for the majority
of you is that Steve and Jay will continue to
provide their analysis their picks on the site every racing day,
just as they have been doing, so you can continue
to go there and find their picks just like always.

(05:28):
Not going to change. We are going to add some stuff.
They're both going to have a blog on there that
they're going to contribute to, some thoughts about things, try
to help you out with some stuff. I think we're
going to have a little bit of a link there
so hopefully they can come on and actually come on
the site and their picks on Saturday mornings. We're working

(05:52):
on that. That's going to happen, So know that you
are going to be able to go to Racindjason dot
com moving through obviously until the Derby, through the Triple
Crown and beyond through the course of the year. That
is the plan and we're going to execute it. So
I will pop on there from time to time if
I've got something to say, if there's a big event,

(06:15):
there's a horse, I like, what have you? Who knows?
So I will be on there occasionally as well putting
up a story. There should be a thank you on
there later today for everybody, just a quick one so
Raceyjason dot Com lives on even though the show is
ending today. All right, as far as racing today, not

(06:40):
really my focus of the show. But Santa Anita started
their Hollywood Meet yesterday, another huge day for Steve. The
role continues. They have a ten race card today. The
feature is the Santa Maria. Unfortunately, it's yet another dirt
steak that is dominated by Bob Baffert. He has two

(07:04):
Phillies in there who look like they should run one two.
We've seen way too much of that last I don't know,
five eight, ten years at Santa Anita, but that was
the direction they chose to go. They protected him, they
wanted it, and they've got it. So this is it
and this is another one of those days. There's a
few other vetable races, good ones.

Speaker 10 (07:25):
The guys are going to talk about a couple of them.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
So that's sant Anita today. They're running this Hollywood Meet
since Hollywood Park is no more. Keenland has a very
nice card, as you would expect today they should and
they do a great betting card. Steve has two bonus
races from Keenland j of course as the full card
from Keenland. They have the mile and a half Elkhorn

(07:49):
on the Grass, which is always a good fun race,
and this year is no exception, very competitive and the
Ben Ali always thought it was like Ben Muhammad.

Speaker 11 (07:58):
Ali, but it's not.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
No, he's from Louisville. He was the Louisville Lip. Probably
my first all time favorite athlete. Muhammad Ali I was
that generation weren't around then. You'd have no idea how
different and exciting Muhammad Ali was. There's just no other
way to put it. There was nobody like him, and
there has not been since. I can't say that very

(08:20):
many folks. Anyway, they have that race and there's a
big day at Oakland. They have the Oakland Handicap Lobbying
Pratt's there. They also have a couple of nice races
for three year olds on that card at Oakland Park,
so if you're interested, there's some good racing there. Okay,
there is some sad news today to report, and that

(08:45):
is the passing of Professor Gordon Jones, all time legend,
certainly in southern California racing. And somebody I grew up
reading and loving one of the great handicappers really of
all time, wrote a couple of very important books in

(09:05):
the seventies and was I guess I felt the lead
handicapper and the late great Herald Examiner. So I got
to know his daughter, joe Anne Jones, and sincere condolences
to her today. Gordon was ninety five. I lived a
very long life. He did what he wanted to do.

(09:27):
That was certainly my impression, and really broke a lot
of ground in handicapping. Also in seminars. I believe he
was the first person to really do seminars. He had
a pick six club. So Gordon Jones somebody I did
a seminar with. I'm very proud to say that that
happened in Las Vegas. I don't know he came twenty

(09:51):
years ago. It was a blast. Guy was sharp as attack.
He was the man.

Speaker 11 (09:55):
He ran the show.

Speaker 3 (09:57):
He had fun and I'm glad that I was able
to do some after that, and I know I kind
of modeled a little bit on how he did it.
A lot of people did. So the tie in here is,
if you remember the beginning of this show, Joanne Jones,
somebody I met in the press box who was not
getting a lot of respect up there. I wasn't really either,

(10:20):
and she was sharp as attack because she had been
taught by her father, the expert, and so she made
her own figures. Very good handicapper, a good player. She
wanted to break into the business. She did to her credit,
against a lot of difficult odds. And when I got
the opportunity to do this show, she was the paddock host.

(10:41):
I don't know what the official title was down at
Golf Stream Park. So it really worked out. So I
asked her if she wanted to be a regular part
of the show. She said yes, and we had a
lot of fun kicking things off that first year with
her in that role, giving us, you know, updates every
Saturday and Sunday from Gulfstream Park, giving us horses to watch.
Very good at what she did then still does so

(11:05):
sad day, but you know, I was one of those
teenagers who loved the races, went to the races whenever
I get somebody to take me and religiously read Gordon Jones,
Jerry Antonucci, people like that, excuse me, and they really
helped keep my love of the sport going and grow

(11:27):
my understanding of handicapping and wanting to play and wanting to.

Speaker 11 (11:30):
Be part of it.

Speaker 3 (11:32):
Also say that the radio stuff that was going on
there was powerful for me. Bill Garr used to do
his radio shows, his terrible race recreations that were just
god awful. But that's all you could get. You took it.
There's a lot of other ways to get racing on
the radio. You could hear the stretch calls every half
hour on certain stations. And then there was horse in Jockey,

(11:56):
a powerful source for winners. I believe that was gentleman
named Jay Richards. But I listened to that, and so
for me to have been a part of that tradition
that I grew up on as a kid, I never
planned on doing it. I always liked radio, but it
wasn't like I had a goal. It wasn't that type
of kid. But here we are. So again, condolences to

(12:20):
Joanne Jones, part of the original Inside Racing family, for
the passing of the Professor Gordon Jones. Okay, well, let's
let's keep rolling. Let's bring our man Steve on for
the final time. Couldn't close the show any better than
he has this year. So mister Pollock, good morning.

Speaker 12 (12:45):
Good morning, Jason. How you doing.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
I'm hanging in there, man, This is it?

Speaker 12 (12:50):
Oh man, I can't believe it. I was just I
was really hoping that you'd come on the show and
you'd say, you know, I changed my mind. But on it,
I guess that happened. Yet, if it's going to happen,
it's going to be a late April Fools joke. But
there you go. Listen. Really, I gotta thank you. I
really thank you for taking me along this journey with you.
I've been with you. I believe it's been thirteen years.

(13:12):
I was trying to figure it out last night. It's
just been an unbelievable ride. And just really quickly because
I want to get this out of the way, I
just want to thank three of my buddies. I want
to thank Dennis Label, who was the gentleman who told
me he said, call Jason Levine because I think you
guys would be great together on the radio. And I
guess he came up with a really good idea. I

(13:33):
want to thank my friend Bruce. He lives down here
in San Diego. He's the one who's always motivating me,
got me a book this year that got me really
back in the right direction and really help push this
late drive. And I also want to thank my friend
Jim Boggs who's been there every step of the way
with me for years. He and I have been through
a ton together with family stuff. Thanking those three guys

(13:55):
that again special thanks to you, buddy for taking me
along this journey. It's been absolutely fabulous every step of
the way. I wouldn't change the thing, except for maybe
we'd go another ten years.

Speaker 3 (14:07):
Well, I appreciate that. I thank your friend Dennis for
you know, making it happen, because you're as good as
a gets and the show is really only as good
as the handicappers. That's kind of how it's always been.
And so what you brought to the table from day
one and the professionalism being just completely on your game

(14:31):
all the time and reliable, just as good as it
gets and taught me a lot. So it's been fun
since day one, and that's why we're still did it.
When it works, it works. I've had real consistency on
this show for twenty two years, not a lot of turnover,

(14:52):
and I think that's because it was quality. So you
certainly proved that the entire way, and this last all
of twenty twenty five a ridiculous example of what hard
work can do and experience and when you're seeing the ball. Well,
it's a beautiful thing. And horse racing because you get paid.

(15:15):
So it's been great for me as well. You certainly
got paid yesterday, another big day, a Friday out there,
Granny Budgy paid a little bit more than I think
maybe you thought. Try paid nice And the all Turf
pick three, how about that two hundred and fifty bucks.
You and I are turf Maven's. That's what we love.
So it's a fun bet for us. A nice score there.

(15:38):
So yeah, it's been it's been awesome, just great, and
it's softly nice to have someone that you know is
there and you know is going to deliver. And at
the seminars as well, and that was also a blast.
And I appreciate everything you did there, and I know
the fans have as well, so they'll continue to follow you.

(16:00):
The pix will still be there on the website and
keep rolling through the Derby and through del Mar and
onto the Breeders Cup in Southern California again. So yeah, weird,
but let's uh, let's close it out and do what
you do. Let's uh, let's get to it.

Speaker 12 (16:20):
I'm ready, Jason, I'm ready wherever you want to go here.
Are we going to talk a little bit about the
derby or are we going to just go right into
the race.

Speaker 3 (16:26):
Let's go, let's go a minute, a minute on the derby. Oh,
a lot of horses work today. I saw a few
of the workouts this morning. I'm pretty convinced at this
point and that could change that there's going to be
a legitimate pace in this race.

Speaker 10 (16:43):
And so I'm going to give you.

Speaker 12 (16:44):
I'm going to give you three quick points, Jason yep.
Last year's numbers three, two eleven four, three horses down
on the inside and the superfecta. I think that starting
gate has changed a little bit. The one has actually
hit the ball has hit the super high five two
of the last three years, and I think we're seeing

(17:05):
a little bit of a change. And the trip that
the horse got that won the race last year missed
it Dan right on the rail. That inside is no
longer a right hand turn, so be aware of that.
I'm not saying I want to draw the rail, but
don't just throw those inside five post positions out, which
is actually, Jason, is something I did unless it rained
when the track would become more inside, So be aware

(17:26):
of that when we're playing the Derby this year. I
also want to say, let's keep our eyes on the
Japanese runners and the runners coming from overseas. Last year's
best horse to me was Forever Young. Clearly they were impeded.
Clearly they would have won the race. We can't just
toss them. I think Forever Young would have won that
race last year had he not been completely interfered with,

(17:49):
and then they didn't claim foul. That's another story. But
let's just not throw those imports. And Luxure Cafe is
very good looking on tape. It's been a little bit
under the radar. Keep your eyes on that. And then
last but not least, you know, you came up with
something that was very good pace wise. It did seem
like each Derby was less case than what we had seen.
And it was three years in a row. They were

(18:11):
running one, two, three all the way around the track.
Doesn't seem that way this year. Maddi Cat Road did
go out citizen blink a citizen bull taking the blinkers off.
We'll make a final evaluation. You still have East Avenue,
you still have American Promise, you still have Rodriguez in
the race for speed. But stay tuned on the pace
and we'll reevaluate it each time. Again, I think you

(18:32):
came up with something that was very strong that would
work for a few years, but I think that might
have changed a little bit, and we're seeing a little
bit more speed get into this race each year, and.

Speaker 3 (18:43):
With ONL Mighty deciding stupidly to go in the race,
there's more speed. So you know, it's different every year,
and I think this year legitimate pace, So definitely something
to look at and for people to keep track of.
And that is in two weeks there, we're two weeks away.

(19:03):
One work for most horses left after tomorrow and that'll
be about it. All right. Well, let's jump into your
final radio play. You've hit a billion of them here
the last four or five months, so let's close the show.
You're going to go with race eight at Santa Anita.
Gotta do the.

Speaker 12 (19:20):
Hillside, Gotta do the hillside course, Jason, nineteen races run
so far this Well, we're going to say this meat.
They want to change the meat. I'm not going to
change the meat. Seven have been one wire to wire,
which is a pretty high percentage. Two just off the pace,
six by runners three to five off the pace and
four by the deep closers. Jason's been pretty fair the
last few years. I see a little bit of speed

(19:42):
in this race, maybe a little bit more than normal.
With mystification. Tangarees Kangaroo Court, and I think a horse
that's sitting just behind them, maybe even a little further
than that, has a good chance in here. Jason, I
got to finish the meet here with a horse that
is going to be a name that's near and dear
to your heart, and that's the three horse, Tom Sever.
Tom Sever obviously named after one of the best pitchers

(20:04):
I actually had the best form I've ever seen of
a pitcher. If you if you're someone who judges golf
swings or the way a guy pitches or swings the
baseball bat, Tom Sever's swing or his pitching style looked
about as good as anybody ever seen. But here's the
deal with Tom Sever. This this horse is out of
the dam and Nola Gray. She was absolutely terrific down

(20:25):
the hill. Was an absolute hill course specialist. So number
one for Tom Sever. This horse has hill course specialized breeding.
Number two four year old horse. We've talked about this
where these horses start to develop in their career. This
horse came off a layoff at three on the dirt.
Doesn't look like this horse wants any part of the dirt.
Last time, the second race off the layoff, a six

(20:48):
furlong race, this horse drew the rail on the flat.
The flat has really been tough for the inside early
this meet, and this horse got one of those trips.
Was just very tentative every step of the way down
on the inside. The winner of that race, Schwartzmeier, got
the early lead, just absolutely loped around there, especially early,
and then took off and Tom Sever was unable to

(21:10):
catch it. Actually looks like this horse got past late
and did finishing third beat in the length. But when
this horse finally got in the clear on the gallop out,
this horse took off, telling me this is the perfect
distance and what this horse needs is a little bit
extra distance. The hillsigned course is going to be perfect
for this horse today. I think Tom Sever is going
to run a big race today. If we can get

(21:30):
five to one on this one, I think that'll be
a very good way to end our selections here on
this show. I'm going to use three horses in the exotics.
First of all, I want to talk about Tiger Horn
seven years old. Now, Jason, the favorite draws the one hole.
I think this horse is beatable today and he's had
five starts at this distance and he's zero for five.
I really think this horse wants to run five furlongs

(21:52):
at Delmar. He's been a sensational horse down there. I
think we can beat him even though he's in for fifty.
And Glatt does really well with this move. If you
want to use an extra horse in the try, that
would be the extra horse for me. I'm going to
try to beat him. I'm going to use the seven
touchdown Brown, who should handle this distance well. A good
effort two races back going a mile should be there

(22:12):
or thereabouts every step of the way. The ten simplexity
is very strong right now, coming off three wins, and
my price play in the race is on the far outside.
And I'll tell you what, folks, if Tom sever got beat,
I would be very interested in seeing what the odds
are on this one. It's the twelve scatify. If you
go back to this horse's race on May fourth Derby

(22:32):
Day of last year, this horse sprinted six furlongs, was
favored in that race, had all kinds of trouble in there.
Didn't start very well, but man did he finish strongly
and he galloped out like a champion. I was really
early in this one's career. He tried the Ocean Side
Stakes with only one turf start under his belt. Did
go a little bit wide in that race. Look who
won that race. That was formidable man who's come back

(22:54):
to be a really good horse. I'm not too worried
about that last race. Got burned up in a little
bit of a speed duel. Good outsign draw a good
rider with Hernandez and a good string of works here
for saddler. Dangerous price horse in here, scatifi. Let's play
the three Tom sever to win it. Going to use seven, ten,
and twelve in a trifecta in an exact the boxes again,
you can add the one instead of a six dollars.

(23:15):
Try it will be twelve dollars in both spot which
you'll make it, which will make it twenty four instead
of twelve. But it's the three Jason Tom sever A
met just picking it after you, And I'm not doing
it because I love that the ball like I already
know I wouldn't do that, I really do like this
horse today and it just happens to be that. I

(23:37):
hope to end the show for me with Tom sever
I hope.

Speaker 3 (23:42):
I hope so too. There's so much karma surrounding the
fact that this horse would be in and you would
pick this horse as large a met fan as I
am since nineteen sixty nine. That's pretty amazing. So that's
a great way to finish it off. I'll be rooting
for him for sure. There will be a couple bucks
on him as well. And Steve, just appreciate it so

(24:06):
much and wishing you the best of luck. I know
we're going to stay in touch and you're going to
keep doing your thing, and you're going to do it great.

Speaker 11 (24:12):
So thank you.

Speaker 12 (24:16):
I was I didn't want to get to this part, Jason,
but here we are. Thanks a lot, buddy, it's really
been great. Thanks everybody, and it's been awesome.

Speaker 3 (24:28):
All right, Steve Pollock, it is. It's it's weird, it's tough,
it's very very tough. I understand that we're going to
go straight to Jay. Let's take a break. We'll get
Jay on the other side and then take some phone
calls eight two oh eight seven seven five to eleven fifty.
This is Inside Racing, the final show. We're going to

(24:50):
take a break. Come right back with Jay. Some phone calls,
some stories. We got more to come here. Stick around.

It, yeah well you, have you really. Haven't AND i
really appreciate your ability and. Professionalism, again there's a you,
know value that reliability someone who's who you know is
going to put in the. Work i'm proud of what you've,
done whatever you handicap er on the show has, done

(27:56):
and that's a big part of. It so you, know
you went for, it you got, it and it's been
a great. Ride AND i really, appreciate LIKE i, said
you're just professionalism and obviously a really good handicapper and your,
insight and it's been a great ride all the way.
Through so all the hosting that you, did stepping up

(28:19):
when need, Be so thank. You AND i know that
fans appreciate it as well because they've got a bunch
of winners and things that think. About so you're going
to keep doing. It AS i mentioned on the, website
that will keep, happening so folks can know they can
continue to go there and you'll be, there and they
should just check the website and see what you what

(28:40):
you've got on. There, Obviously keenland's Ending churchill's coming and
so we're just gonna you're just going to keep it
rolling from.

Speaker 9 (28:46):
There, yeah we'll keep those picks. Going as you, mentioned
we're gonna have a blog. Going mine's going to be
Called Jay's Hot, tips And steve will be having his
own blog as, well and, uh we're going to be
producing something like a podcast is kind of a. Goal
and as you, Know, JASON i haven't mentioned on the,
show BUT i have my own YouTube channel and it's

(29:07):
called Horse Racing World, channel and we're gonna be producing
it over, there and then hopefully once the you, know
the website is set up to accommodate, it we'll basically
import that over to you, know the, website so you'll
be able to see that On racingjason dot. Com but for,
now you can see that kind of content at Horse

(29:27):
Racing World channel on. YouTube i just dropped a new
video this, morning Horse racing consolidates its, tracks so talking
about all the different things going on around racing and
how tracks are you, know basically shrinking and merging and you,
know new, tracks and so please check that. Out you
get a, chance, subscribe give me a like whatever you

(29:48):
want to.

Speaker 3 (29:48):
Do there you go that's that's that's what's happening in
the in the immediate. Future all. Right speaking of immediate,
future you get the full card Of, keeland and you've
got the full card of Sand anita in the best,
bets and you're going to do for your final, Race
race ten At Santa. Anita closing the.

Speaker 9 (30:06):
Show, yeah, YEAH i always love those maiden. Races and
this one's a turf. Maiden it's not down the hill
Like Steves, race but it's on the flat six furlongs
AND i think there's a beatable favorite. Here Prestige function
Under Juan. Hernandez no early speed at, all came flying
light to get a, Piece so got to admire that.

(30:27):
One hernandez has not been having a terrific turf. Meet
he's around fifteen. Percent it's, okay but you, know one
is always going to be a primarily dirt jockey and
turf is something he also. Does but you know they're,
better they're better turf riders in the. Race Hector barrios
is a better. Rider antonio For, zoo who had choice
a couple of, mounts is a better turf. Rider you,

(30:48):
know Certainly floppi And prat's a better turf, fighter but
he's not in town. Today so, YEAH i think this
is a beatable. Favorite and you, know there are a
number of horses to take a look at here For
zoo wound up on the, nail who's seven to, two
and you know that one that he picked over a
couple of, others, THOUGH i think on the horse that
ran very, fast favor to you you know on that

(31:10):
one That smoley winds up on, that and he also
gave up current affair to As L. Espinoza and so
the ONE i like is none of. Those it's under
a much lesser known rider down at the. Bottom that's number,
Nine robin with A, Y robin with A y when
in his debut and her debut ran the fastest race

(31:31):
of any of. These and ninety one Brist figure made
the lead in the stretch and just faded late at
a big. Price and then last the last time out
was like the second choice two dollars and sixty cents
on the, dollar just you, know had a decent placing
early in the race and then kind of just ran
into trouble in the, stretch just had nowhere to, go

(31:52):
just blocked and then made up some ground passed a
few horses late but got out too late and was
a pretty low figure for. That you're gonna get a price.
Here robin with A y is six to. ONE i
think it might even go. Higher And Paula geary this
is kind of his. Niche this is a second Time
lasix wor us And geary gets a huge fifty three

(32:13):
percent win second Time. Lasix SO i Think robin with
A y is a price to close out the.

Speaker 3 (32:18):
Show here we, go AND i happen to know That
Paula giy is A clipper fan and a Longtime clipper
season ticket. Holder how about? That you didn't know? That
and in addition be, yeah a trainer for a long
long time and a small, barn but very. Capable so
the Nine robin with A y kind of keying off
that big debut race and in the trouble last, time

(32:40):
the nine in race ten final, race final race on
the show and exotics, wise you're just doing exactness.

Speaker 9 (32:47):
Right, ACTUALLY i threw a trifecta on aage to the
site the last, Minute so we're going to use prestige, Function,
venalia favor to, you current affair and moonlit courage from
The mandela Barn so it's a dollar exact nine with
two four seven a, ten two four seven eight ten with,
nine and then we're going to back that up with
a trifecta nine with two four seven a ten with

(33:08):
two four seven a.

Speaker 3 (33:09):
Ten there you, Go robin with a why to close the,
Show Sarah Finn carmona coming For Paula. Giray that will
be a great. WAY i kind of have a feeling
this is going to, happen SO i like this source as.
Well i'm glad to see that you picked them And jay,
again thank you for everything for a number of years.
NOW i really appreciate, it and what'shing you the best

(33:32):
of luck in the. FUTURE i know we're going to
stay in. Touch you're going to keep doing your.

Speaker 9 (33:34):
Thing absolutely And i'm going to give you my ten
Second derby pitch HERE i will close it. OUT i
like the two horses From, florida from The Florida. DERBY
i like the two horses from The, Bluegrass Burnham square
And East. AVENUE i think The japanese Warce steve mentioned
Luxwor gold has a, shot but out of all of,

(33:55):
them The Florida Derby Winter Tapping street is so lightly
race just coming up at the right. Time if you
hold a gun to my, Head, Jason Tappin street take the.

Speaker 3 (34:03):
Derby, okay there you. Go two weeks before the. Race
that can. Change but right, now AND i believe they've
said it's Tapon, street so that makes a difference to.
You that's that's your derby played two weeks. Out he's
a very nice. Horse he ran very well last time
AND i know a lot of people are very interested in.
HIM i think he's going to get the pace he,

(34:24):
needs so it's going to be fun to see how
that plays. Out all, Right, jay as always, Appreciated, sir take,
Care we'll stay in, touch all, right.

Speaker 11 (34:33):
Thank, You.

Speaker 3 (34:33):
Jason, okay all, Right, wow that's it for the picks.

RACING i moved From Southern california To Northern california about
twenty three years, ago and you're one of the things
that kept you kept me connected To Southern california, racing

(47:51):
and that's been a terrific thing for.

Speaker 3 (47:55):
Me i'm.

Speaker 10 (47:57):
Glad that's. Great, WELL i used to live about twenty
minutes From Hollywood park THAT i loved to go To Hollywood.
PARK i mist all of, that but, listen, YEAH i,
know and listening to your show kept me connected to
that whole. Scene so that was. GREAT i wanted to
mention one other thing that you helped me do is

(48:18):
remember the two thousand and Five Kentucky derby and the
Woman jacamo won that? Race, yes, absolutely AND i was
listening to your. Show he was the HORSE i liked
in that, Race and listening to your show a few
weeks before the, derby, SOMEBODY i think it might have

(48:38):
been you mentioned the horse closing, argument and so when
it came back to the, DERBY i Boxed jacamo closing
argument and a Fleet alex and a one Dollar.

Speaker 3 (48:55):
Well that that was a. Score well we lost in,
there but that's that's one of the all time great
that's right. There i'll never forget. That all, right do
we have a break we have to do or should
we just do it at the? End what are we
going to?

Speaker 4 (49:06):
Do do the?

Speaker 3 (49:09):
Break all, Right we're gonna do the. Break we're gonna come.
BACK i got a few stories and tell THAT i
know everybody's going to. Appreciate and uh and some final
final thoughts for everybody. Listening. Uh so let's take our
final break on the final show Of Inside. Racing we'll
be right back.

Speaker 5 (49:27):
Down on The.

Speaker 4 (49:31):
PATRIOT am eleven.

Speaker 1 (49:32):
Fifty if you're looking for a Fine italian dining right
down the street from Del, mar that's what you'll get
At Maurizio's Italian. Trederia maurizios is in Downtown insinnitas at

Speaker 5 (50:03):
You're listening to The PATRIOT am eleven. Fifty Little feet
of my all time favorite. Bands there's a horse running
today In heland and one of the big races Called
Tennessee lamb.

Speaker 3 (50:23):
Right, There, Yeah Little, feet all, Right that's a great
way to kick off the final segment. Here i'm not
gonna have enough time to tell all these, stories but
just a. Few remember our friend the Late Alan. Benowitz
one of my greatest days doing the show and then
enjoying the races was When alan gave Out Student council

(50:47):
in the two thousand and Seven Pacific. Classic they were
running on Poly track then down At. DELMAR i believe
he was twenty to one morning, line AND i just
always Appreciated alan's. Guts it wasn't even, guts that's how
he did. It no other show did, That no other
radio show did. It they still don't because we were the,
best and that's one of the. Reasons And Student, council

(51:11):
even Though alan gave him, out didn't get. Played he
went off to twenty three to. One and if you Knew,
alan and we've talked about, it he was not as
good a better as he was a. Handicapper he would
make mistakes like we all.

Speaker 4 (51:22):
Do.

Speaker 3 (51:22):
Well he didn't make mistakes that. Day Alan bettett, correctly
And i'm happy to SAY i did. Too Lava man
was the six to five, favorite threw him, out And
Student council paid forty seven dollars to win That Pacific
classic The exact with Awesome, jim very nice horse came
back one hundred and seventy. Seven and let's just say

(51:44):
That alan AND i both had it a few Times Missus.
Racing jason was with me that. Day we went out
to a wonderful dinner At, speaker's which was a long
time sponsor the, show phenomenal restaurant thanks to the Gaucho Dan,
speaker and we Met Jim corbett that. Night a fan
of the show who had listened To Bett Student council

(52:06):
came over class act just really had a wonderful evening
and that's just a great, memory and the fact that
Knowing Alan bett right was right on the. Show it
was just that was just a great day for the,
show for, me For, alan for. Everybody so that's a strong.
Memory my favorite horse doing the Show. ZANYATA i don't

(52:28):
even think it's. Close he was a. PHENOMENON a couple quick.
STORIES i was standing With Tom quigley in the paddock
At Hollywood, PARK i don't remember. Why it was a
weekday and they were schooling some horses and you might
remember a horse Named Real. Trip he was the top
older horse in Southern california at the. Time trained By Ron,

(52:50):
ellis he won The Hollywood Gold. Cup he won a
number of huge. Races he was at his peak right.
Then he was in the paddock and he was based.
There it was like his paddock and you could tell
he was feeling real. Good AND i guess we were
Told zenyada was going to come in preparing for a.
Race zenyada walked into that paddock from where she came
from her, barn walked over to near where Rail trip

(53:13):
was looked. OVER i should, say look down at Rail,
trip who was about twenty feet, away and Rail trip
looked over Saw, zenyada looked, down looked back and kind
of put his head, down and you could just see
the body language Like i'm not the alpha she, is
and they both knew. It And tom AND i looked

(53:36):
at each other and, said did we see what we just? Saw,
yes we, Did and she walked into the paddock like
she owned, it which she. DID i never forgot. That
i've never had an experience like, that except when she
walked into the paddock for The Breeders' Cup classic that.
Year that was kind of the big QUESTION i had
OR i didn't have it anymore Because i'd seen. That
but there were going to be eleven male horses there

(53:57):
in that. Paddock she walked in that, past announced that
she was The, queen looked disdainfully at every other horse
in that. Race and that race was. Over so let's
listen to the actual. Race and here one of the
great calls of all time from the, Man Trevor denman
of That Breeders' cup. Classic we got.

Speaker 7 (54:21):
It the Red captain, said yaas come to the, outside Said,
yata coming flying on the brandstand side on the, inside
son of.

Speaker 9 (54:29):
That it is right.

Speaker 6 (54:30):
There this is unfu, Believable. Sanata what a performance one
will never again looked, impossible but it.

Speaker 3 (54:41):
Is, saying, yeah well it was never impossible with. Her
AND i have to say that being At, santite that
the place. SHOOK i don't think it's ever going to happen.
AGAIN i don't think we're going to see a horse
like her. AGAIN i hope we do to last that,
long build that kind of a, following come from way out.

Speaker 10 (55:00):
Of it the way she.

Speaker 3 (55:01):
Did this was just a unique, situation And i'm GLAD
i got to be part of. It i'm. GLAD i
bet her that day. HARD i think she was five
to two because these coast folks didn't. Believe, well there you.
Go so that was memorable for. SURE i want to
thank my, wife known to you all as Missus Racing.

(55:22):
Jason she put up with me for all this time
and we did a lot of traveling as a lot
of you, know traveled the world together and, well we
stopped at a few racetracks along the. Way sometimes she
was thrilled to do, it sometimes not so. Much we
went to a pretty empty racetrack In South, africa one
of their bigger tracks. Too there are maybe three four

(55:43):
hundred people. There that was pretty. Strange we had a
night time stop In australia that wasn't, great pretty exciting,
atmosphere but we've had a long. Day but we also
went To, doville which is what they based Del moro
on outside Of, paris right on the, beach and had
a wonderful time. There she's a great company, always and

(56:03):
that was a memorable, day as was Seeing, zarkava the,
undefeated Brilliant zarka win The arc De triomphe in a
light rain In, paris her favorite.

Speaker 11 (56:14):
City in the.

Speaker 3 (56:14):
World So that is a strong memory for. Me one
of the best Races i've ever, seen one of the
best Horses i've ever, seen got to see it with.
Her we actually met a few other people we knew
there that. Day that was just a really fun racing.
Day SO i thank her for dealing with This saturday
Morning sunday morning for twenty plus years and supporting me.

(56:36):
Throughout SO i thank her very very. Much what else
we got the future of, Racing this will have to be. Quick,
UNFORTUNATELY i think it will be. QUICK i think this
sport is going to continue to. SHRINK i think we're
going to Have New, York, Oaklawn, kentucky maybe something In,

(56:56):
florida maybe Southern california five years from. Now that's about.
It you got people in charge At First. Racing they
obviously cut off the funding for this. Show they've cut
off a lot of. Marketing they're not really promoting. Racing
they don't want to be in. It it's not the
Business belinda wanted her her father Did Churchill. Downs they're
closing tracks left and. Right these are the two major

(57:18):
powers in. Racing they don't want small. Tracks they want
the whole deal and to own. It so kind of
watch the game. Disintegrate over these twenty two, years it's
been a. Shame there have been some games much better
with after, care much better with taking care of the
horses on the, track with, injuries with. Death there have

(57:40):
been improvements. There there need to be more in both,
areas BUT i don't. Know tough times for racing for,
sure and strange to be watching it all unfold week
by week over the course of time and to see
everything kind of fall away and fall. Apart so, yeah
just shame in that. Sense things change and that's that's

(58:03):
where we're at right. Now so all, right how much
time we? Got, okay very, good we got about a
minute and a half left a, well it was it
was a pleasure for me to get to do, this
to get to interview some of the PEOPLE i, Idolized,
lafitte Pink, Kai chris, Mccaren Steve, coffin Late Penny kennery

(58:27):
who Owned, secretariat was a wonderful guest on the. Show
Julie cron who gave the greatest insight into riding a
Horse i've ever heard on this show back in our
first year talking About candy ride in The Pacific. Classic
so thanks to all. Them it was just a pleasure for.
Me so, yeah strange to end. It wouldn't it be

(58:50):
funny If Go dolphin won The derby this? Year that's
the BOOK i. Wrote sheik most said he was going
to win it in five. Years he. Didn't it's been
another twenty five years this year that they've got a
rabbit In East avenue and they've got sovereignty tone from,
Behind so that would be kind of some strange. Perma all,
right it's been an. Honor it's been a pleasure to
host a show by horse. Players four horse. PLAYERS i

(59:12):
won't be talking to you next week at. Eight but
remember this from the Movie Let It.

Speaker 4 (59:17):
Ride you might be walking around lucky and not even.

Speaker 3 (59:20):
Knowing so here's the every photo and disqualification going your,
way the odds rising on your horse during the. Race
and also remember this again From Let It, ride because.

Speaker 4 (59:31):
When jaewatter, wins.

Speaker 1 (59:34):
He takes the world seven horse.

Speaker 3 (59:39):
Along for the. Ride be a good. Winner, yeah we're.
Done that's. It
