Speaker 1 (00:01):
Almost got more ken on the road. You know, just
coming into a game where you where it's like, you know,
Yukon and Georgetown's kind of back, and I thought the
building walking through the tunnel today was uh just an
awesome feeling, you know with where uh, with where the
Georgetown program is and uh, you know, being able to
(00:21):
uh uh play a great, big game on the road
versus Georgetown when they got a real good team and
uh just uh that that kind of energized that was
coming out of that Villanova loss. That was a that
was tough for us. So you know, credit to uh,
you know what ed'stone, but also credit to our team
and credit to this man Isson winning his player in
college basketball. Uh, one of the greatest players in in
(00:44):
Yukon history. And uh we knew we'd get this type
of response from him today because this guy is one
of the best players in college Guest questions for Alex Kah, Yeah,
he al was coming off of that loss.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
What was kind of the message coming in and just
kind of even that behind because it was a tough
loss and refocusing yourself.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
In that locker room on the task today.
Speaker 4 (01:07):
Yeah, doing whatever it takes to win. Coach talked a
lot about hunger, just being the hungrier team out there
offensively and defensively, and we knew that this is a
completely different Georgetown team than they are last year, and
we had to respond and really show up and just
really trying to leave that tough loss behind you, just
focusing on how talented this team is and just to
do whatever it took to win.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
And you guys defensively were locked in today. But but
I don't think people know this is how physical you
guys are off the ball. Just talk about how you
were able to prevent Georgetown from getting to their landing
spots and making them feel uncomfortable on their offense.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
That was a big point of emphasis heading into this game.
It's just really trying to make their catches tough. And
I mean, teams do it to us every game, so
we just decide why not do it to them. So,
I mean, it's the biggest too, It's the most physical
league in the country, and you just got to be
physical if.
Speaker 5 (01:56):
You want to win on the road, especially Alex, like
coach said, you've come to so much in college. But obviously,
you know last game didn't end the way you wanted to.
How have been. How have the last few days been
for you? And I mean, were you playing with your
championship rings like coach suggested?
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Or I did what coach said I did. I listened
to it completely and felt good. Right, It felt good
playing with the rings.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
And I mean that was probably the lowest of lows
I've had in my Yukon career, just from you know,
I practice free goes all the time and just everything
in general.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
I work my ass off and for that to happen
has sucked.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
But I had to have a quick turnaround and respond
as the type of player that I am. But it's
also just credits to coach right here. I mean, he
was supportive. He was by my side the entire time
and just lifted me confidence after the game when you
text me in the morning, just making sure I was good.
And I don't think I'd be able to have the
performance that I did today if it wasn't for this
man right here.
Speaker 5 (02:50):
You guys had a long embrace after the game. You
share anything I said there, that's a hug.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
I'm a big hugger and I love hugs, and.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
That's just someone who I am.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
And I mean it just it was kind of just
like a thank you to coach just because he lived
in my spirits and the entire coaching staff, my teammates,
my mom, and my dad, they all lifted me up
after that tough loss, but he was the main one
that just really got me, got me to the confidence
level that I needed to today, and the hug was
kind of just like a huge thank you.
Speaker 6 (03:21):
How much do you think physical and mental maturity played
in your victory, particularly in the secondd.
Speaker 4 (03:26):
I mean we had to be we couldn't be too
high or too low just based on them going on
a rud or playing the scoreboard, and that's a lot
of mental is just making sure that we stay with it.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
And they had the crowd by their side, and we
knew that they were gonna respond.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
I mean, coach Coolly does a great job with their team,
so we knew that they would responded. We just had
to really make sure that we stayed locking throughout the
entire game. And physicality was one of the main points
heading into this game too, so we weren't surprised by it.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
Were you surprised by their diamond late in the game.
Speaker 6 (03:52):
I know how much they really showed.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
That this year.
Speaker 4 (03:56):
I mean we've seen a bunch of defenses already, so
you just got to go out there and play and
just read and react to what the other team's doing.
And I think they did some diamond last year too
when we played them, So it wasn't much of a surprise.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
And as for.
Speaker 6 (04:09):
Alex, and right after Alex the seventeen to two run to
start the second half, what was the focus coming out
of intermission?
Speaker 4 (04:16):
Just set the tone, set the tone defensively, and that's
exactly what we did. And just to keep the crowd
out of it, is we want to respond to play
championship basketball as who we are as a program, and
we did that exactly, and we really just built off,
built off that run into the rest of the half.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Also, seven to ten from the field, four to six
from three point range.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
Do you feel you were able to take advantage of
to the offensive? Just taking what the defense gives me.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
And the big emphasis for myself and into the game
is just being more aggressive and assertive and it's my
team and I got to do that. And today today
I probably still passed up a couple of shots, but
still I just I just take what the defense gives me,
as well as trusting my teammates to have the best
teammates in the.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Country's fork alex and coaches openness. Even he called you
mother the greatest players in Yukai history.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
How does that get your confidence going going forward? And
what does that mean? I mean, it's just it's unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
I mean, I haven't thought about it too much yet,
just cause I'm still playing here and wanna add.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
More to history.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
But that's just the greatest confidence who say you could
have as a player, And for him to be by
my side and just lifting me up, it's unbelievable. And
he's gonna continue to push me every single day in
practice and when you get to the games, he's just
uplifting everybody. And that's just what makes him the best
coach in the country.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Thanks, guys, will have us go back to the locker room.
Thank you?
Speaker 5 (05:32):
Question Nah alright, I mentioned him.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Wow, that's there's that's.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Kat j questions coach earlier will start right here.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Hey, coaching, it look like you are bury your coverage
on sore Brough. Couple of times you you uh sent
to double a couple of times you did not?
Speaker 4 (05:50):
Was that the plan to day?
Speaker 2 (05:51):
It was to make him almost think about how different
you were in his coverage.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
You yeah, I mean Lessen, it's all about with him,
uh just a s bots he catches it on it
like your pre catch post defense. If it's not on point.
You know that that guy is real technical, like a
like w you know, like a the NBA VET in
terms of like ceiling and playing for position. So on
a short two day prep, you know, we just uh
(06:18):
you know, worked so hard on on pressuring post feeders
and just breaking the contact with him and not giving
angles into the post and then uh, you know, really
just trying to avoid uh you know, letting him get
catches in his spots. And then you know, with certain
players we trapped him. You know, with other players that
we don't physical enough to hold up, we didn't trap him.
(06:39):
So you know we threw a lot obviously, uh you
know at him.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
In fifteen turnovers with the bulk of them being by
ball turnovers. Just speak to did was that something they
have small guard?
Speaker 3 (06:51):
Was that something you thought you could take advantage of?
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Well, yeah, I mean they had fifteen. I mean we
we're not We don't turn people over. That's why we
even so bad defensively this year. But coming out of
the Villanova game where we just basically allowed their best
players to catch the ball wherever they wanted on the court.
A huge point of emphasis for us was to not
let you know, really good or great offensive players catch
(07:15):
the ball, you know, cause once they catch it, you
got problems guarding MAC and guarding EPs, and guarding U
Sober and and and guarding TV. So like just you know,
make the make the catches harder. And then you know,
I tell you what, like Williams and you know Williams
and and PV. It is the reason why they're top
(07:35):
thirty in defense. I mean, those two guys are like
shut down corners. Uh. They they really disrupted a lot
of stuff that we were trying to do. And and
we're really good at half court uh execution offensive team,
but those two guys were like shut down corners out
there just blowing stuff up. They're really excellent defensive team
for her in their own right. Do you like what
(07:58):
Amad gave you?
Speaker 5 (07:59):
And especially when he came in for Asami the first
half on both sides of the ball.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
I did. I think I thought, you know, he was good.
Uh gave us a you know a little bit of
offense there some physicality on the ball. You know, I
think that you know, he takes a step towards you know,
earning time, uh, you know, in each half. And then
you know, listen, Hassan is uh you know, Hassan needs
to be kind of playing in that twenty eight to
(08:24):
thirty minute range. And so we we need that, uh
you know, we need that from a month.
Speaker 6 (08:29):
Talk about your your maturity second half. I mean you
got stuff with what you did and took uh blew
the game away.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
Yeah, I mean you know we just talked about hunger.
You know, I tho the we were uh, you know,
there was a there wasn't a desperation to us in
the Villainova game. You know sometimes when you you know,
when you w when you win eight in a row,
you forget how brutal you feel when you lose one.
And uh, you know, we forgot that feeling of uh
(08:56):
of of of Maui and what that felt like. And uh,
you know that feeling of losing has gotta unlicia hunger
in you uh and a desperation, uh in an urgency,
and I don't we just we played with that type
of just hunger today, Like there is no way we
were going on into this week, and I don't think
a lot of people are gonna win at Georgetown this year.
(09:19):
Uh So I think this really helps us in terms
of playing at the top of the league because I
I think they're gonna they're gonna hold court here a lot.
Speaker 6 (09:27):
When you see your when you look back at your
Saint Bee's day, how, I mean, how have you grown?
Speaker 1 (09:34):
You know? I'm nowhere uh near as emotional no matter
what you know, fake stories people write about. I'm just
gonna tell you, like I've not had uh a text
message or a phone call. I I I saw uh
president and elevator uh when we're playing Gonzaga and MSG
(09:57):
and uh she wished me good luck. That's the only
conversation I've had with my school president. Okay. And I
would just please with with Yukon fans like like engagement
farming media, like those people that are not legitimate, like
they're winning if you respond to what they're writing, you know,
like low level journalism, you know, like that, like don't
(10:19):
unfollow and I just please leave it with like one
or two likes and like don't engage that shit like that.
But I'm not a whole lot different you know, I
just you know, listen, you get you get better. I
think obviously, you know, when when I'm in a situation
(10:41):
like I'm in, you know, maybe the team's not playing well,
you feel like you're not getting you know, great whistle.
Obviously I'm an intense coach. But again, I grew up
on Big East basketball in the eighties and nineties when
that's how the men coached, Uh, And that's how the
games were played. And I grew up on mixed bo
I grew up on Lakers Celtics and Sixer Celtics, and
(11:03):
I grew up on that's the basketball and men competed
life for death to win games, and it was total desperation.
And that's how I coach. If if people are too
soft and not like that, I guess they could try
to cancel my style. But I don't give a shit
anything else for coach to go right ended, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (11:24):
I say, uh, the coach you talked about growing up
washing datis basketball and uh the Yukon Georgetown Robin.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
When you coming back, you.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
Just explain a little bit more about like the energy
in the stadium today and just the energy of.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
Report as well. Yeah, I mean I've come in here.
I came in here as a player. I got my
shot blocked by Morning and the and the Tombo, and
then I got destroyed by AI and just you know,
grew up uh Hoya paranoia and then you know it's
one of the gre
