Speaker 1 (00:00):
Back here on the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches Show, Bob Joyce,
Geno Oriam here. The regular season begins on Thursday at
the Excel Center against Boston University, or radio coverage det
FISCU and myself at six point thirty tip off shortly
after seven here on the Yukon Sports Network, the Varsity
Network app, and the Varsity Network dot Com. You mentioned
the Bigs a little bit. I was at practice last Monday,
(00:23):
and I know it was a mostly defensive oriented day
of practice. But one of the things that I noticed,
and that was being emphasized obviously by UCD and the
coaching staff with the Biggs got to stay out of
foul trouble. And that's something we didn't see Sunday, right.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Right, That's going to be a huge point of emphasis.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
And a lot of it has to do with being
aware of.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
What's going on on the floor, understanding where you need
to be and when and why, having a a big
picture mentality of what's happening, being able to make really
good decisions. And I okay, you know Jenna has not played.
(01:14):
You know, that was her first time out in public,
you know, so maybe she was over anxious, maybe you
know the excitement Ice has played a little bit, you know,
so between the two of them, there's got to be
a tremendous amount of improvement. It's it's okay if we
(01:38):
don't get enough positives, but we can't get that many
negatives when it comes to, you know, eight fouls between
the two of them, So that has to that has
to get taken care of it, and it will, it will.
You know, the more we play, the more situations they're in,
the better they'll they'll be able to read those. But
(02:00):
that that's gonna be a huge key for us for sure.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
Right and for Jenets who you mentioned her first year,
and I'm thinking of the Big East. There's not a
lot of post players her size in the Big East.
You won't see players like that until you get to
the bulk of non conference play. I don't know if
Carolinas maybe has one or two if you play old
Miss down in the Bahamas, certainly they do. They gave
USC a fit yesterday, but that's something she's obviously just
(02:25):
gonna have to adapt to.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Yeah, they both are, and and you're right in the
in our conference they aren't as many, so that puts
you know, when a team is playing with five out
on the perimeter. You know, that really does put those
guys in a in a tough situation. But that's good
(02:51):
because they're going to learn how to do things that
are kind of uncomfortable for them.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
You know.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
So I'm all we can do is just keep after
them and keep working with them and keep you know,
keep dragging it out of them because I think it's there.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
All right, let's talk Page. All she did was you
twelve or fourteen? That's efficiency for you? Twenty seven points
nine boards? And correct me if I'm wrong here. I
know she works your tail off in the gym. Does
that fall away relatively new? I know she did some
of that last year, particularly off that inbound play when
when she curled off Nika Founder in that baseline, I
(03:30):
mean that was almost automatic last year, but that fall
away looks a little more defined this year.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
She does spend a lot of time in the gym,
and she does spend a lot of time kind of
improvising different things and creating different ways of scoring.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
You know, you.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
Watch you know, you watch Page play, and.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
She's very creative. You know, she understands how to how
to create for herself, for others.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
She's got a great imagination. Yeah, she's been shooting the
ball lights out the entire preseason. The the fact that
you know, she's able to add something each and every
year that she's been.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Here, that that little fade away.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Is going to come in handy, I think against some
of the big defenders that we're going to play against.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
And so just getting her.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Getting her enough rest during games is going to be
a big key because she hates to come out. Getting
her enough rest in practice is going to be a
big key because she wants to be out on the
court all the time.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
And then getting her.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
You know, more support so that there's more people can tributing,
which takes some of the pressure off for her to
have to get thirty every night. So all those things.
You know, we haven't played a game yet that means anything,
And I'm excited about you know, I'm anxious to see
this Thursday what it looks like, you know, when it really.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Matters, right, I think Astional will certainly be one of
those that will contribute on a regular basis vastly improved.
Not just to shoot her now while she had forced
deals like for instance on Sunday, Now, well that changed
in the regular season. We'll see, but she just seems
to be one of those who obviously played a big
role last season and became that, you know, third or
(05:40):
fourth option during the course of the season last year.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Yeah, there were a lot of times when we had
her on the floor the entire forty minutes. She and
Page were our top two options on the perimeter. You know,
we we certainly asked her to do way more than
(06:07):
I think she thought she would have to.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
Do coming here as the freshman.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
But she responded, you know, she responded great, because you know,
she's she loves the game, really loves the game, and
it's tremendous competitor puts puts a lot of pressure on
herself to be really really good. So having that, you know,
(06:33):
as someone that can if we can get a consistent
shooting effort from Ash, I think that makes life a
little bit easier for Ali too, because then all of
a sudden, because we don't, you know, the one thing
about Ash and Ali throw them both in there together,
because they pretty much played the same position. It seems
(06:54):
like just a different size of the floor. They they
never has take to shoot it, which I think is great.
You know, so they're not shy, and as long as
they take good shots, I'm not I'm not worried about it.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
But if if those two.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Combined can make four or five threes every night, that's
pretty darn good.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Yeah, I mean thirteen threes on Sunday. That does suddenly
just you know, I'm still getting into basketball mode here,
and you look at the end of the game, it's like, wow,
I mean you did that. I think five, five, or
no seven times last season the Huskies made at least
ten threes in a game and that was without one
of your best shooters, arguably and Hazy. We'll get to
that and we'll continue with more with the Gino on
