is we are welcoming our third guests. She is a musical artist and a
teacher. We are welcoming Esan Marshall. So, Esan, welcome to the
show. Thank you so much forhaving me. Of course, of course,

(02:38):
so first things first, always loveto do some introductions, and so
Janette, why don't we start withthe Hertford Taste. Hopefully people enjoyed it
last year and know all about it, but I think great for a refresher
and yeah, maybe an introductionism forsome people. Yeah, so Hertford Taste.
We like to remind people that thisis not the taste of Hertford.

(02:59):
This is actually heart for Taste. This is going to be our third year
Friday June seventh through Friday, orexcuse me through Saturday, June eighth,
twelve to nine pm both days. And the new and exciting news about this
year's event is that we are ina new location. This location is going

(03:22):
to make it so much more accessiblefor people from all over to come and
visit and celebrate Hartford. So we'regoing to be on Pratt and Trumbell streets.
Perfect and that's where roads are goingto be closed. Oh yeah,
give us the scene. Yeah, roads are going to be closed. It's
almost like a tease. So ifyou're going down Pratt towards Trumbull, you
can go right, you can goleft, you can enjoy all of the

(03:45):
thirty restaurants. We're going to haveover thirty musicians and live art. It's
going to be amazing, fantastic. But we're going to talk all more about
that. And it's wonderful here wherewe have two participants of the Hertford Taste.
So first, Rob, can youtell us about Gather fifty five?
Well, sure, at the Gatherfifty five is a very very unique place.
First of all, we're a nonprofitrestaurant with a mission, and the

(04:08):
mission is to help solve food insecurityamong the most vulnerable people in our community.
And during the day we have apartition, a participate participation model where
we actually have a food at areduced price, or we have people who
can't afford it at all come inand we'll volunteer for half an hour to

(04:30):
a half an hour's worth of workand earn a meal. But then we,
you know, so pay what youcan afford type of thing. And
I've got lots of people who comein and pay full price and it's a
nice mix of community. It givesus. It's a restaurant that serves and
really provides dignity to the people whojust can't afford that experience. And what
really makes us unique is at nightwe are a five star white tablecloth,

(04:56):
you know, over the top diningexperience with help from some of the great
chefs in Connecticut who lend their culinarytalents and believe in the mission that we
do. And all the money weraise at night helps fund our daytime program.
It's absolutely wonderful for anyone who hasn'tgone highly highly recommend So can can
you talk a little bit. Eachmonth you're saying, a different chef comes
in and there's different menu items too. Absolutely, so the menu is changes

(05:23):
all the time and once a monthwe do have a different guest chef come
in and you know it just createsome amazing dishes and maybe on their menus.
At some of the best restaurants inWest Hartford and Hartford and all over
Connecticut. Billy Grant, for instance, you can come in and try his
bolonnais. Currently we still have TylerAnderson's gluten free caesar salad with fried chickpeas.

(05:51):
We have just a number of greatdishes that are just collected and on
the menu from all of our pastchefs and come up seasonally. But everything
what's great about it is is thenew chefs that are coming up and want
to participate and lend their talents toit. So this month coming up we

(06:13):
have Max Downtown. It's going tobe participating nice and so it's a great
opportunity for people to try everyone's foodeven before they go to their restaurants and
say hey, So it's a greatcross promotion and it really helps us get
the word out and it's such agreat volunteer way of promoting and getting in
the ship the chefs to come backand really participate in doing good work that

(06:38):
is wonderful. And yep, you'vealready within the first five minutes you've already
made me hungry. He's on yourfeeling so perfect. Well, definitely we'll
chat more a bit on that. But Ian would love to get introduction about
you, and it sounds like youand Jeanette and probably Rob too. All
don't sleep if you're teaching and performingand all the good things. You know,

(07:00):
when you love what you do,it doesn't feel like work. It
just feels like a breath of usshare. So I am a jazz singer.
I perform in and out of Connecticut. With that, I've been able
to expand into as On Music, which is my company. Nice. Our
main mention is to provide people ofcolor with access to art as well as
yoga practices. Love it so rightnow. The last five years I've been

(07:23):
working with the Harvard School System aswell as organizations as the Bushenel and ASA
to bring those alive in classrooms. So providing creative workshops, so art different
art disciplines as well as yoga andmindfulness practices as well. Very nice.
Oh, I like this, Okay, all right, now I need to
figure out a class. Yeah,so actually I'm going to that with one

(07:46):
of my yoga practices. I juststart offering jazz movement, which is where
there's a live musicians playing while Ilead a yoga practice. So definitely a
whole different experience that we got topractice out here and us at the space
in Hartford. So the next onewill actually be July thirteenth, so very
nice, very nice. And nowwhere is the space in Hertford located.

(08:07):
It's on Arbus Street, Sweet twohundred. Okay, all right, good
to know. Oh this is good. Right on my calendar for the summer.
You can eat and then you cando yoga. Yeah, this is
great. Or am I to yogafirst and then go eat? Yeah?
No, I may not be veryeffective. So perfect. Well. In
speaking of eating, so Jeanette, you said over thirty restaurants participating, let's

(08:28):
talk about the food kind of whatwhat is going to be there all the
things. Yeah, so Gather fiftyfive is one of our thirty plus restaurants
that are going to be at thisevent. And obviously, you know we
call this Hartford Taste, so thisis tasting all things Hartford. So obviously
we have over thirty restaurants. Wehave over thirty musicians and then we also
have the live artists. You know, this is an event that's free admission,

(08:52):
so when you come to the event, you can buy food tickets,
and you know, we really liketo taste all of Hartford and so you're
going to go and you're going tohave food from Uzbekistan, You're gonna have
food from Jamaica, You're going tohave Italian food, you know, Turkish
food. So it's a taste. It's coming and really getting an opportunity to

(09:16):
see the lifeblood behind some of theseestablishments. You know, working with a
lot of restaurants in my past owninga PR company, it is hard to
get the word out right. Sothis is really an event. They can
shine the light on so many smallbusinesses, including our restaurants. You know,
they can you know, patrons cancome try a little bit of what

(09:37):
the restaurant has to offer and thenhopefully you're going to come back into Hartford
and coming at the full experience, the full plate. I like that.
Nope, that's why I know.I've been introduced to a lot of new
restaurants through the Taste the last coupleof years. So it's which has been
a great experience and rob you know, as Janette mentioned, Gather fifty five
will be one of the participating restaurantsthis year. Are you able to kind

(10:00):
of give us a sneak peek aboutmaybe what you'll be featuring or is it
too early to tell? So no, no, I can give you a
little sneak beek. We're going tobe doing a crispy Yuca rionos. It's
with a Salsa ver Day and nicecreamy salsaver Day and it's one of the
one of the appetiters on our menuright now. And you know what's great
about Gather is we can do We'revery colectic. We're not just tuned into

(10:26):
one type of food. We getthese these great just these different influences from
all these different chefs and and soit influences our menu that way. So
we're not we're not like locked intoanything specifically, which makes it, you
know, kind of a cool revolvingdoor of great foods. And I tell
you when when Jeanette told us aboutthis, and you know, when she

(10:48):
said, you know, twenty thousandpeople Street and Vest right in the center
of downtown, I'm like, oh, I'm in this is this is really
a fantastic and it's going to begreat exposure for us and so many of
other other restaurants. I heard someonetell a story about they kicked off their
restaurant last year, and I thinkit was and I said, first of

(11:11):
all, great name, and thesecond of all, he said how it
really spurred off his business and peoplerecognized him and then he just got so
much business from that. So Imean, you know, kudos to the
organization for doing that, because that'swhat it's supposed to do. And you
know, you go to these festivalsand you do these different things and you
hope that it's going to actually bringin some business. But this is something

(11:35):
that actually, you know, didso we're looking forward to that. We're
looking for the extra extra disposure andto help out everyone else that has the
same you know, we're all onthe same boat, we're on the same
town. And it's great to bringin people and expose them to some great
things with just that's you know thatthey don't have to you know, it's
not very challenging to just walk fromplace to place. It's very eat and

(12:00):
drinking and listening to music pretty easy. Lift there. You know, that's
very that's very easy. We're notchallenging anyone, no, no, you
know, this is going to begood bringing everything to people, which is
wonderful and in addition to all thegreat food as we'll have tons of music.
So if Jeanette, if you couldtalk a little bit about that,
and then Issan would love to haveit here. How you're getting involved too,

(12:20):
Yeah, so we're going to havetwo stages, one on Pratt,
one on Trumbele. So really youcan kind of go anywhere and hear various
forms of music and just like thefood, it's really about celebrating the diversity
in Hartford. So we tried tobring a very eclectic mix. We work
with Hartford dot com Chip McCabe, who's incredible and he really helped, you

(12:41):
know, create this lineup. Youknow, we said, listen, Chip,
we need to make sure that it'srepresentative of all the different neighborhoods.
You know, when people come,we want them to have some familiarity,
get up and dance and you know, hopefully see some of these incredible talented
artists and you know, bring themin to do music at their event or

(13:03):
their wedding or you know, whateverit is. So, you know,
very excited that you again can cometo this event, have free admission,
listen to the music all you want. You don't have to pay to see
the music, and that's the coolthing, very cool, and with all
the great artists. So issan excitedwas when will you be performing? Is
that there's a line up been releasedyet? Yes, the lineup is actually

(13:26):
on the website, so you guyscan definitely check that out. I'll be
performing on the Expanity stage, whichwill be on Trumbull Street. Nice,
so just our main stage, whichis our main stage, like it.
Yeah, So that's exciting. I'mglad to be back. I had the
pleasure in the honor of performing lastyear wonderful, so to see it get
to a more accessible space is great. Shout out to Chip. He's such

(13:52):
a great person to be connected with, especially as an artist, So thankful
for the opportunity. You'll definitely hearmy jazz influence in my music, a
lot of soul, you know, and you'll definitely hear originals, some scatting,
a lot of that going on.So I'm really excited about it.
Nice. Nice, And what wasthe experience like for you last year?

(14:16):
Oh, it was great. Itwas funny because it did rain a little
bit, but then it like stoppedright before I was about to perform,
because you're like, my goodness.I was like, yeah. So I
had people coming out and dancing withme, and it was great. It
was a beautiful plethora of people. And I was just like, can you
guys tell me what food I canget because I see them, like,
I see the food. I smellthe food as I'm performing, So I'm

(14:37):
just like and then they gave mesome tickets, food tickets. I was
just like, oh, thank you, bless your hearts. Yea. So
it was a great experience last year. So I had to come back nice,
nice, well, very exciting, very exciting, and I think it's
so important. You know, we'vetouched a little bit but on the impact
of this event and Rob, youknow, you highlighted just that impact for
restaurants, that exposure, but wouldlove to touch a bit more on this
and you know you're not kind offrom your perspective, really what have you

(15:00):
seen even just for the city. You know, if we could touch a
little bit just on what you've seen, how this impact you know, this
event has impacted this city. Insuch a positive way. Absolutely. I
mean, you know, this istheir third year, and years past we've
had over twenty thousand people come down. And if you really think about the
economic impact, this is twenty thousandvisitors that maybe staying over at a hotel,

(15:22):
maybe they're ubering it in. Weoffer five dollars parking, right,
So people are coming in and they'regetting to know the city in a whole
different way, and that's really fantastic. You know. Another big piece about
this is all of our artists whoare coming, they are paid to be
there. They are getting paid daremention that, you know, and I
think that's really important. The samething with our restaurants. You know,

(15:46):
thanks to our presenting sponsor at theHertford, all of our restaurants can come
and participate for free. You know, So they come, they you know,
they we provide them with the electricityand with the tents and the tables,
an incredible signage and they just bringtheir food and they get to dazzle
and dance you know, anyone whostops by, and it's really fantastic.
And the biggest piece, the biggestpiece is that we are raising money for

(16:08):
Connecticut Food Share yes, let's talkmore about that is basically all the proceeds
raised go to the Yeah, sowhy say I say a portion of the
proceeds because obviously this is a veryexpensive event of pleasure. Yes, we
do have to pay our artists tobe there, but yeah, I mean,
Connecticut Future is a phenomenal organization. They're so wonderful to work with and

(16:29):
they'll be again at this event. And a lot of people don't realize the
food insecurity that does exist in sucha wealthy state like Connecticut. But yeah,
a portion of the proceeds. Really, when you buy food tickets at
this event, you are helping tocontribute to Connecticut food Share and that's really
important. And even again beyond ConnecticutFuture, I want to stress again that

(16:51):
a lot of our small businesses, you know, they are still dealing with
the effects of COVID and so thisis really an opportunity to put money in
their And Rob shared that story aboutrestaurant, and there are plenty of other
stories similar to this where specifically restaurantshave shared that they were really on the
verge of closing their doors. Thisis a very true story and this event

(17:15):
brought so much exposure to their spotthat they made a decision to stay in
Hertford and I think that's really important. We all need to walk away and
say that you're coming to this eventto support Connecticut Food Share, you're also
coming to this event to support ourlocal businesses definitely and hopefully helping them grow

(17:36):
further. And you know, Robwould love for you to touch on kind
of you know, you highlighted abit the exposure opportunity, but what else
you know, kind of do youreally see the impact will be for Gather
fifty five. Well again, youknow, getting the word out of what
we do because we are focused onthe food and security part, right that
is our mission and it is,uh, it is shocking to understand.

(17:56):
It's one of the things where youkind of, you know, you go
about your day, you don't realizewhat, you know, how the entire
community handles, you know, thecurrent conditions that are out there, and
there's a lot of circumstantial homelessness. There's a lot of people who are you
know, are just getting by barelyand can't afford. They have to make

(18:18):
choices, they have to make realchoices about hey, do we eat,
do we pay this insurance bill? You know, these are real choices that
people have to make. And youknow, food Share is a you know,
they support us in our mission. And you know because Gather fifty five
is part of Hands on Hartford andthey do lots of things that we have
a food pantry, we have abackpack program for kids. Besides besides the

(18:41):
Gather fifty five portion of it,we have tenant services, homeless outreach,
and we know the community and wereally try to make a difference in their
lives. So it is very importantthat that people come out and help and
by having fun and really we're nota great way to help. Yeah,

(19:04):
it's just like when people at nightsay, you know, hey, by
the way, when you're paying thisbill tonight, you know you aren't actually
buying people launch next week. Thisis how it works. And when when
you are helping, you know thiscause you aren't helping people you know,
survive and help you know, andeat. And and that's you know,
that's our core right. We haveto you know, we have to make

(19:26):
sure our community survives and flourishes. And it is shocking. There's like I
think it was thirty nine percent offood and security in this state and it's
not that's a statistic that is itis just shocking to me. And I
just want to say just quickly thatyou know, there are a lot of
amazing events that happen throughout the stateof Connecticut and Hartford specifically, but I

(19:49):
do want to point out that thisis one of the few events that actually
is working hard to really raise moneyfor an organization and so toward our small
businesses, that that is the maingoal of everything Hartford Taste. Yes,
definitely, And in addition to theartist community and isan, if you could
touch a little bit on just reallyhow important is it to have an event

(20:12):
like this giving the opportunity you know, for yourself and then also for you
know, other fellow local musicians.Absolutely, I mean, as Janette said,
like we are getting paid for this, you know. So that's one
aspect. There's a lot of communityevents that may not you know, offer
that just because of whatever the situation, you know, So I'm appreciative of

(20:33):
that. And then the plethora ofpeople that are there, you know,
from other artists to people that endup becoming fans. You know. Last
year, actually someone clipped a videoof me performing while my dad was like
videotaping and just bobbing his head andthen they posted it and I was just
like, oh my goodness, wow, like just seeing how you as an

(20:53):
individual, we can all have apositive impact on each other. So it's
been so good because of again community, it's recognizing community and you know,
and this is one way that Iconnect with people to follow my mission,
you know, making sure people haveaccess to the arts and to yoga practices.
So I feel like the arts isjust such a strong therapy for the

(21:18):
human race period that I do mybest to keep just bringing it however I
can. That's great, now, thank you so much for that. And
Janette, one thing I want togo back on you touched on how it's
free or for restaurants to participate.Yeah, and that's in thanks to the
Hartford and certainly a lot of otherbusiness community support. And if you could

(21:38):
highlight a little bit on that, yeah, I mean, obviously, Metro
Hartford Alliance has been a partner ofours for many years from the beginning.
Hertford Healthcare is a huge supporter ofours and also helps us with the donation
for Connecticut Food Share, and thenwe have various other businesses. You know,
We're very fortunate and that the Businesscommun Unity supports this event, but

(22:02):
I think they support this event partiallybecause they do recognize the mission behind it.
And we do our best to tryto give exposure to everyone. Right,
So we're talking about giving exposure toour small businesses, but we're also
working hard to give exposure to thepeople who are making this event happen.
You know, moving into a newlocation is no small feet, No,

(22:25):
you know, having two large stagesno small feet. But we are just
excited on how our community has ralliedand come together and really recognize that this
is an important event that kicks offthe summer definitely, and ways for businesses
to get involved because I always loveto highlight kicks off on Friday at twelve
noon, so a great way tobring your staff out for lunch. Come

(22:48):
out, you know, grab acoworker, head over to the Taste and
there's tickets that you can pre purchase. We have an advanced ticket program,
so if you go to the HertfordTaste dot com, you can go under
tickets and then you can buy advancetickets and those are really structured towards corporations.
Okay, but obviously when you cometo the event, you can buy
tickets right at one of our ticketbooths. But we do encourage businesses.

(23:11):
We know that people often like towork from home on a Friday. We
understand how that works. But atthe same time, we do encourage Hey,
this is a way that you canreally enjoy downtown Hartford and support your
fellow businesses. So have a picnicinside, go watch some live art.
You know, do those meetings indowntown Hartford on Friday. I like that
it's gonna beautiful sunny, so wealready know that. And if it isn't,

(23:33):
it's rain or shine. We alwaysjoke it's rain, smoke or shine.
Because last year we had smoke.Yeah, we still had over twenty
thousand people. Yeah, right, even with the smoke, which we know
it better not come back perfect. And you know, in speaking of the
business community, rob but we know, in what ways could our business community

(23:53):
kind of are involved or could getmore involved with gather fifty five in your
mission, well again with our guestchef program, any restaurants that have you
know, just a real focus onjust you know, well, we're all
the great hospitality and great food ifthey want to, but if they have

(24:15):
that idea of community. You know, all chefs feed people, you know,
and we all have that at ourcore. And uh, if they
want to do and make a differencein their way lending their talent. If
any any restaurants who want to geton our list and help out, then
we suggest you, you know, check out gather fifty five and hands on
Hartford as a way to participate. So I like that. And where can

(24:37):
people go to learn more information?Well, you can go to gather fifty
five dot com hands on Hartford.I'm sorry, dot org dot org.
Hello, tricky questions, they arealways the ones that get you. And
yeah, you can find out I'llabout a mission on hands on Hartford dot
org. Okay, fantastic, fantastic. All right, so we have I
think we've touched on everything, right, Is there anything else I've missing out?

(25:00):
The one other thing is artists andlive art. You highlighted that briefly.
You talk a little bit more aboutthat. Yeah, So again,
this is an event that is youknow, really tasting Hertford, all of
Hertford beyond just food. So we'regoing to have over thirty artists, like
I mentioned, on two different stages. You can look at the lineup hopefully

(25:22):
you'll come for both days all daylong, twelve to nine. But if
you want to come out and saySeeason like you can go on the website
and go check out when she's playing. And then we have a partnership with
rise up, who has helped supplyor give us some of the artists and
they'll be doing live art in fourdifferent areas. Okay. And then we
also support a lot of creatives too. We have a lot of photographers and

(25:45):
videographers who come and help us makethis event successful a wonderful experience. Well
fantastic. And where can people go? Remind everyone of the website where they
go pre purchase their tokens and ticketsand all the good stuff. So www
dot the Hartford Taste dot com.And then you can find us on social
media at Hertford Taste. All right, fantastic. And last, but certainly

(26:08):
not least, Isan is where canpeople go to learn more about kind of
all the work that you're doing andlooking how they can get involved. They
can go to isanmusic dot com.That's why s A N N E Music
dot com. All right, verynice. We have time for one more
question, so I want to puteach of you on the spot if you
don't mind, I'll see I don'tknow who I want to have to go

(26:29):
first, but is if you couldtalk maybe a little bit on what you're
most excited about for this year's HertfordTaste, and it can't be for the
food that maybe you're serving or yourperformance. It has to be something different
than maybe you're most excited about.Who wants to go first. Everyone's pointing
out poor Rob, so sure, listen. I love this city all right.

(26:52):
I've worked and lived in the cityfor over thirty years, made my
lifelihood here, and I just lovewhen when things work, when people come
together and actually create something that isan event worth going to and it shows
off the best of what the cityhas to offer. That is what I'm

(27:14):
excited about. I've always tried toget people together and think differently on but
there's a lot of people have separateagendas and things like that and it never
really comes together. This is afantastic event that draws people in and shows
them what we really are and whatwe have to offer. So that's what

(27:34):
excites me, and I'm over thetop about it. I love it and
I can see the energy like burstingoff of it. Yeah, I'm going
to be there twelve tonight. I'min Deson What about you? Definitely the
food. I didn't get to haveas many food options as I did last
year because I had something to doafter. But definitely that creating more memories
with this great energy of new peoplethat I'm going to be surrounding myself with.

(27:56):
So definitely checking out Gale fifty fivefor sure is going to be like
throughout the summer. They have thismenu now, so that's every know,
So yeah, thank you very nice. And Jeanette, what about you?
Which is this is me? Yousee the inside scoop on everything. There's
so many things to listen you know. I love seeing the energy, you

(28:17):
know, I mean Pratt Street isused to seeing a lot of energy,
but this is really an opportunity forpeople again to come out and taste Hartford.
You know, I feel like I'msuch a foodie. I feel that
I get to try so many differentrestaurants. What I don't often get to
do is try so many different restaurantsand get to listen to cool music.
You can get to watch like anartist like to me, it's kind of
