gonna we're gonna talk more about thescene behind us. But first things first,
we are recording live here at TravelersChampionship and it is quite the day
here, so we are very excited. Kind of right behind us is the
driving range and just a wonderful day. Fans coming in, a lot of
fait happy fans here too, sowho are stopping by, which is absolutely
fantastic. So today we are gettingthe pulse about the Travelers Championship impact and

really what does it mean kind ofbeyond the fairway, beyond the greens.
How is this tournament really impacting ourcommunity, not only this weekend but really
throughout the year. So thrilled tohave our three guests with us. First
is our president and CEO of theMetro Heartford Alliance is David greg So,
David, quite the day to behere, beautiful, another wonderful start to

summer. Definitely, yes, Isay, kind of the summer kickoff and
we've got you know, it's alittle warm here today, but it's feeling
good, feeling good. So andnext is with he is the portfolio head
of Insurance, the insurance business unitRobin Kool a sheik larrage. Hopefully I
said that right, Robin, allright, that's right. I was practicing
a little bit there. Well,Robin, wonderful to have you here in

the whole Cognizant team here today too, Thank you. We're excited to be
here. Fantastic. And last,but certainly not least, is John Guy.
He is the chair of the metrohartFord Alliance Board of Directors and a
recent retiree of Webster Banks. SoJohn thrilled to have you here with us
today. Well, thanks, Kateis always exciting to be out here at
the golf tournament this time of theyear. It's such a vibrant environment and

exciting energy going around, and Webster'shappy to be a part of it.
My associate with MS makes it thatmuch more special. I was gonna say,
this is a good setup, We'vegot fantastic. Well, first things
first, I always think it's greatto give some introductions or reintroductions to everyone's
organization, So why not, Robin, I'm gonna put you on the spot

first if you could tell everyone andreminder about who Cognizant is. Sure,
I'm glad we're starting off with that. Yeah, an easy one, right,
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeahyeah. So Cognisant, for those
who do not know much, isa large global services company. We're an
IT services company, about three threehundred and sixty thousand employees across twenty plus

countries. We've established partnerships and strategicpartnerships, and one of the reasons we
are here is the relationships we builtin this region, which helps us to
deliver services, specifically in the insuranceand the healthcare sector. So close.
About about five thousand of our employeeslive and work in the state of Connecticut,
and our closely partnered with carriers acrossConnecticut. Okay, fantastic. We

love that five thousand people in Connecticut. It's wonderful and growing too. I
know we are growing. We justacquired Bellcan, which you know, it's
a ten thousand employee company and theyhave offices and windsors. So we're excited
to be bringing in more wonderful,wonderful news. So we'll definitely talk more
about that. So next John,we're gonna put back on the hot seat
and we will talk a little bit. You could share a little bit your
role with the Metro Heart for theAlliance, because really you've been our fearless

leader. And yeah, he's shakinghis head at me. Well that's fearful,
maybe even fearless, especially today,right. No, it's been an
exciting and inspirational period of time forme in my life. I've been in
the Connectu region for about fourteen yearsfor Webster Bank as you mentioned earlier,

and a part of Metro Heart forAlliance almost that entire time, initially as
a board member, chairman of theFinance Committee, and I'm in the second
year of my term as you know, as chair of the MHA. So
I've had a great opportunity to getto work with not only the MHA team,
but even though I've been here allthis time, the inside I've gotten
being a part of the Metroeconomic Councilhas really been a lot more than I

would ever expected. And there's somany exciting things that are going on for
the Connecticut region that if the averageperson doesn't get a chance to know about.
So I'm feeling really good about myability to be able to help tell
that story. That's great well,and today we certainly will continue to tell
that story. There. So awonderful tup. Thank you. I appreciate
and tup I didn't even really meanthat, but I guess you know,
we'll take the pun So and Davidwith that. You know, listeners here

every week about the Metro Hertford Alliance. But if you could give kind of
a you know, just a briefrecap reminder on really the work that we're
doing. Sure, you know,at the heart of it, it's all
about jobs, capital and talent,right, our ability as a region to
attract and retain the jobs, toattract capital and keep the talent that we
have. It's the talent. It'sthe people that make up our region that

make us economically competitive. So themore people we have with the skills they've
got, the better we're going todo as a region out in the world.
Now. The methodology that we useto achieve those goals has certainly changed
pre and post pandemics definitely, AndI can tell you that on the post
(05:56):
pandemic side, Hartford is really startingto become a model city for how to
come out of the pandemic. Therelationships that we've formed with other be it
private public partnerships with the city,with the state, but also with foreign
countries, and just the approach thatwe're taking is different because it has to
(06:21):
be right. We can't do whatwe did in twenty eighteen in twenty twenty
four and expect to have great results. Right, We've more, we've changed
new methodology and it's producing good resultsdefinitely, and a lot of pieces going
into that and you know, makingthose changes. And so we'll kind of
(06:41):
pivot over to talk a little bitabout Travelers Championship and events like this what
that really means here at a highlevel. To start off, if you
just talk a little bit about theimpact, well, you know, to
start our ability to have Hartford frontand center to the world through the Travelers
(07:01):
Championship and the work that Andy andNathan do to make sure that we have
the top field every year. We'veget the best golfers in the year that
show every year, that show upright, and they want to come back
every year. This is the hotspotto be well. You know, it's
been voted as the player's favorite tournamentfor a number of years, so you
(07:24):
know, we really got a greatthing going on. It gets us on
the national and global stage and allowsus the opportunity to showcase who we are
right right, and insurance and golfis at the center of a lot of
who we are. Definitely, definitely, And you know, the tournament today
really spans across the entire week.So much going on here from charitable support.

I know Andy Bissett came on theshow a couple of weeks ago and
he said they're going to plan todonate over three million dollars this year.
I'm not sure he was allowed tosay that. I'm sure someone at Travelers
is yelling at him. But theway, the confidence, it's definitely going
to happen, which is incredible.And you know, really the tournament wouldn't
be possible without the support from ourbusiness community. And you know, Robin
Cognizant is one of the founding partners. You talk a little bit, why

is it so important for you tobe really involved? Sure, you know,
I think it. You know,the the origin itself is interesting because
we share so much in common,and one of our shared values is to
contribute to the community, the clientand colleagues. I think Travelers does the
same thing, and we're excited tobe part and parcel of somebody who shares
(08:30):
our values. So when the offercame up to be a founding partner,
we just took that up and thenevery year the tournament gets bigger and we
have stood up to the promise andyou know, we continue to do that
and we're excited and we treat thisas an experiential event and we host clients
and telling you earlier, you know, we had like one hundred and twenty
esterdate our shell. Yeah, andwe're going to be having you know,

a sellout crowd, sellout crowd.That's right. It sounds like your tickets
have been hard to get. Theyare, you know they are that's wonderland.
How many years has this partnership beengoing on? Many the strategic relationship
with Travelist itself. We just enteredyear nineteen. Okay, so you know,
we are excited about the partnership andwe you know, are continued to

want to do this and you know, as the even gets better, we
want to be seen as you knowpod and puzzle of that definitely well incredible
and we'll certainly talk more about that. But John too, want to touch
you know, your time with WebsterBank is really Webster also has been such
a strong supporter of the tournament andalso it's Birdie's for charity program and if
you could talk a little bit aboutthe Webster Travelers Championship relationship. Thanks Kate,

I'd be glad to Webster, asyou may know, is the largest
bank headquartered in Connecticut. It isa legacy bank that started eighty plus years
ago by Harold Webster Smith in thecommunity with a mission to try to support
the community, just like Cognisance.Okay. So Webster has been a part
of the tournament almost from day one. And the charities play right in our
(09:56):
values, which is to give backto the community in a holistic way,
supporting not only the customers that wesupport, but the communities where our bankers
and our colleagues work right, workand live and play and every all the
good stuff right, you know.And the Birdie's Charity, uh is important
as a part of that shared value. And not only do we support it
(10:16):
with the dollar, but we havea lumber of volunteer hours that our bankers
love and our part of this they'reout at the tournament, okay. And
this is and it continues to beone of those things where the business community
and the private community come together andsupport. Yes, yeah, no great
costs. Love that and you really, you know, hit the nail on
the head. It's really a combinationof everyone from the logos we see around

to you know, to then everyoneyou hear who live here, you know,
coming to support, bringing their family, bringing their friends, and you
know, really, David, theMHA is using this, you know,
really as an economic driver for thecommunity in many ways. And if you
could talk a little bit about thestrategy on you know how our is our
organization using the tournament tournament this yearespecially sure. So you know, anytime

you have an opportunity to bring peopletogether, that's a big piece of what
MHA does, right, we bringour business community together. But this tournament
represents an opportunity for us to bringpeople in from outside to meet with our
companies here in the Hartford region.So we spend a lot of time and
effort to make sure that we getthe right people from outside our region to
(11:24):
come here for the tournament and thenconnect them directly with the businesses that we
call investors, right that make upthe bulk of our region. So you
know, that gives us an opportunityone to have companies, site selectors and
others come in and experience Hartford andexperience it new every time they get to
(11:48):
come in, right, It representsan opportunity for us to sell the region,
to sell who we are, tosell the opportunities that are here.
You know, when you look ateconomic development and how companies kind of go
through this cycle, it usually startswith a visit to a community, right,
So so this tournament represents an opportunityfor us to have a lot of
(12:11):
visits to our community and a lotof new eyes on Hartford and what is
Hertford and then the opportunity for usto sell that to them, right,
to continue the experience after they leave. You know, visitors turn into investors,
turn into companies that are employing andhiring people and contributing to our economy.

So you know, we we viewthis tournament as probably our premier opportunity
to bring in people from the outside. No, it's a great point because
that's where I think. You know, our tent is selled out this week
as well, So it's me,you know, Cogazant. You guys may
be taking the take with how manyhave coming in, but we are as
(12:52):
well. And as you know,it gets better and bigger every year.
And we we sent out the inviteson April and I think by the first
week of April, we would allsold out all days, including program day.
So that's the excite when the tournamentbrings in definitely, and you're bringing
robin people in from really you knowkind of clients are flying in for the
(13:15):
event. You know, can youtalk a little bit too on what's been
you're hearing from individuals who may becoming here for the first time or you
know, or have been back toConnecticut many years. Sure, And as
I said before, you know,since we shared the shared values with Travelers,
it helps us to kind of celebratethe partnership. And the partnership extends
beyond Travelers. We today so closedabout one hundred clients in this region,

so you know, we're excited tobe having more of other clients. In
the past, it was really theTravelers clients who were here, okay,
But we have since we expand ourrelationships to work with the other carriers and
other sectors. We do have clientscoming from retail, pharmaceutical and we have
(13:58):
representations from all industries this year,okay, and there are a few who
are coming in for the first time. So they live about this and make
sure that we got emails every day, you know, the moment they get
back and also asking us to putthem on the list for the next year.
Nice. So we're excited and wetreat this as an experiential even so
we try to kind of provide thebest hospitality and it also helps us to

kind of, you know, engageour colleagues as well. And you know,
we are excited about this. That'sgreat. And John, you know,
from your perspective and kind of youknow, your insight from a board
seat view is really what are youseeing kind of the impact that this is
having kind of on our business community? You know. In addition where you
know, Robin was saying, havingemployees come out really that great energy,

that great vibe is kind of whatelse are you seeing from your angle?
And just really the positives you know, Okay, every once in a while
there's something that's so good you sitthere and go why not? Right,
it's all about then. In thiscase, the Traveler, especially over his
evolution, has engaged all aspects ofthe community, the business community. It
has been a beacon to draw peopleto the area. It has provided insight
(15:05):
for people to see not only whatthe quality of life would be as an
employee, but as a citizen ofConnecticut. And the Hartford region. So
it's almost a no brainer for Websteras well as all of our other partners
to see this and want to bea part of it. That's right,
No, that's great, and thatyou touched on something there, Johnny,
is the quality of life. Andyou know, Rob and I want to
touch back to saying, you know, five thousand employees here for Cognizant and

that number is growing, and ifyou could kind of talk about a little
bit about that strategy and really theexcitement behind I know, I've had the
pleasure of working with many of yourcolleagues and people love it here in the
region, Sure they do. AndI live local. Yeah, I'm based
in Seemsbury, Connecticut, So I'mpart of the CDI of his board as
(15:50):
well, So I'm excited to bethe persentage Cognizant with MHA as well here.
So Thailand, you know, isreally key for the success of our
business and our partners and the peoplebusiness, and it is important for us
to kind of make sure that weare skilling up people but also encouraging and
bringing in early learning talents. Sowe do that with a combination of college
hires. We've partnered with some ofthe local universities we partner with community colleges,

and we're also kind of trying toextend that to the liberal arts colleges
as well, because we think,we think, and we believe that there
is still going to be a shortageof tech talent, and we believe and
firmly believe, and we are inthe early stages of establishing some sort of
partnership with Trinity College in terms ofbringing in you know, liberal arts students
(16:36):
into a tech career. So it'swork in progress, but you know,
these are some of some of thethings we're doing. And as part of
the you know, the the thethe other values around the community service,
a lot of our employees kind ofvolunteer to help you know, early learning
talent, be a universities or communitycollege, to help them with job interviews,
(16:56):
help them with you know, likedoing shadow interviews, and also giving
them a little bit of tech timeand cootching us what okay, okay,
yeah, Talent talent Definitely. Ialways say that this show, no matter
what the topic is, it's unbelievableevery time we come back to talent and
so and John, if you couldtalk a little bit on the talent side,
because certainly Webster is doing so muchto really kind of work on that
(17:17):
workforce and certain partnerships with Junior Achievementand other organizations. If you could highlight
that a little bit. Listen,everybody knows successive any organization is a quality
of people you can attract and keep. Yes, so this tournament provides another
one of those beacons that gives peoplea sense of not only the community because
here as you as we talked about, you see engagement from all the different
(17:37):
industries, from a number of differentnon for profit organization, from the private
sectors. You see the combination ofthe education programs, the manufacturing, the
financial service where the insurance capital ofthe world, as everybody knows, and
so there's options for people to offerall their interests, and there's a commitment
and a lot of energy around makingsure people in the best position from an
(18:00):
education and skill set to be ableto take advantage of those With that said,
there's still opportunities for people on theoutside who are looking for a different
quality of life to come here,and this tournament year after year shows as
a beacon of that combination of factorsand the growth of the tournament also shows
people's interests and moving in the rightdirection in terms of believing yes and want
(18:25):
to be a part of this.Yes, definitely, No, that's a
great belief. And you know,really I think the stage for this tournament
has grown year over year. Andyou know, David want to talk a
little bit on you know, really, how is this, you know,
kind of putting Connecticut, putting theHartford region really on the global map.
And you know, I think atone point many years ago is more maybe'd
say the nationwide map, but nowthis is I mean, this is worldwide.

And if you could talk a littlebit just on that piece, well,
I think you only have to goto the leaderboard to see why it's
a global Ok. Yeah, youknow every year I think for whatever reason,
the Travelers always has one of themost exciting finishes to a golf tournament
a year after year. So certainlyif the field doesn't make it global,
(19:15):
the endings always do. We willbe on ESPN, we will be showcased
quite a bit over the next fewdays on all the great stuff that goes
on out here. But you know, outside of the golf, I think
it's also important. You know,John mentioned the growth of the tournament.
And while I've only been here forsix years, one I got here,
(19:38):
we were still in the million dollarrange for the amount of money that was
being contributed to the nonprofit charities inour region. And to hear Andy say
that the goal this year is toget it over three million dollars. Right,
that's three million dollars. It's goinginto our economy to support nonprofits that
(20:02):
are doing all kinds of great work. And you know, for the folks
who are listening, I invite youto go to Birdie's for charity and look
at you know, maybe you're involvedwith the nonprofit that could be participating with
the tournament. Go there, takea look, see what they're doing.
Reach out because you know that whenwe talk about that growth, it is
(20:26):
the growth of the number of peoplewho are coming. It's a growth in
the tournament and the talent that's beingbrought here to play, but it's also
in the amount of money that's beingcontributed to our nonprofits, which is just
phenomenal and speaks so much to ourregion and what's important to the Harvard region.

Definitely and certainly is an attractive item, you know, looking at you
know, as companies look to chooseto come here, talent looks to potentially,
you know, look to move here. You know, certainly having that
charitable focus, I think really speaksa lot about the region that we live
in. And if you could talkDavid a little bit just on that attraction
piece, and you know, really, how does this kind of you know,
hey, excite some people to thinkHartford region might be right for me,
(21:15):
either personally or for their organization,right, And you know, it
is all about quality. We've spokenabout quality of life, quality of place,
and you know, the Hertford Chamberof Commerce in particular has paid a
lot of attention to quality of lifeand quality of place, especially as it
relates to the central Business District ofHartford, creating an environment where workers want
(21:41):
to come back to the office,right because there's a vibrant community for them
to now be a part of.And it is that that will attract people
as well. When you look atthe number of new residences that are being
created in our downtown core with thehelp of the CRDA and others, we
(22:02):
have a tremendous amount of momentum.You know, coming out of the pandemic,
there was some concern that can weget that momentum back. Well,
that that momentum is back plus.Right. We did a ribbon cutting,
I don't know, two weeks agofor you know, a couple of hundred
(22:22):
new apartments. At the ribbon cutting, they had one left. Yes,
people were like, I'm interested.It's like, well, it's too late.
A wonderful problem to have. Thisis a wonderful problem to have,
and we need to embrace it,yes, because if we're going to grow,
right, if we're going to groweconomically, we have to grow our
(22:44):
population right, and we have toembrace growth and everything that it means.
Right, It's going to mean someuncomfortable conversations at times when we need to
create new housing in our community.Probably the one of the single biggest barriers
that we have to overcome economically togrower economy is housing. Is having enough
(23:10):
housing to support the people that weneed right, right. You know,
we get cognizant trying to hire,trying to bring more people in, but
we got to have a place forthem to live, and it's got to
be affordable, right. We haveto be able to you know, somebody
making eighty thousand dollars a year certainlyshould be able to afford some place to
live in our region, right,but yet that's a challenge. So this
(23:34):
coming back to the tournament, right, it just showcases, it wakes us
up every year to the possibilities,right, because this tournament is all about
the possibilities that we have as aregion to grow and to prosper. Definitely,
you hit on it, you know, David, a lot of great
points there and that momentum, andyou're feeling it, You're feeling across the
(23:56):
region, you're feeling in the capitalcity of Hartford, and you know,
even to Robin, I love freeto touch on it. Last week at
the pleasure of going to the Cognizantevent talk about energy in Hertford. My
goodness, the Marriott was sold out, bursting and you know, I don't
know if it maybe had to doa little with the keynote speaker, but
I joke there, I joke there, but talk. I mean, that's
the energy that's coming from the businesscommunity. If you could share about your
(24:18):
summit event, Yeah, first ofall, was our inaugural event. And
you know how the inaugural events are, right, there's a lot of planning
goes into it. Yet yeah,you know, there is always this,
you could do more, Yeah,but I think, you know, coming
out of it, I would saywe had a really successful industry event,
and that's the very first time it'shappening in our in our capital, and
I think folks are excited that,you know, we were able to kind
(24:41):
of bring them all together, ifnot for nothing, they all share common
background, whether the Hartford or Signasor Etna. Yes, they thought it
was a great networking event, youknow, for them, and then combining
that with our partners, you know, who have invested and have built solutions
with us, it was a greatshowcase for us, and it's brought such
a moment time to the event itself, so there is huge conversations and that
(25:04):
you know, generates business opportunities,which means more employment opportunities, which means
we were able to hire and companiesare able to hire talent and build a
better community here. So it wasa great event. And again, you
know, being being a local,you know, I had a little bit
of influence on the speaker as well, so everyone knows it was Rebecca Lobo
And I'm very for those people whoknow me. I'm not speechless often and

I have to be honest when Imet her, I completely froze up.
It was so embarrassing. But she, I mean, just a wonderful event
in spotlighting the innovation I think reallyhappening here in the region too. True.
That was yeah, yeah, andI think you know, she topped
it up very natural, and Imean, I'm sure you heard her speak.
You know, it's the moment whichmatters, Yeah, which kind of
stuck with us as well. SoI think, you know, we should
(25:47):
all celebrate, but the moment mattersfor us as well. And I think
this is a great moment. Ithink we should celebrate. And I think
these things David said brings a lotof life to our community and to our
state and to our region. Definitely. And position the last question over to
you on you know, kind offrom the board of directors and you know,
so for those listening who you knowmay not be aware, is there's
(26:07):
many different companies and organizations that serveon the Metro Heartford Alliance Board of directors,
and you know, if you couldtalk a little bit on that momentum
and what you're hearing from that businesscommunity and you know, really what people
are most excited about. Yeah,I think the first thing is if you're
not a part of it. Youshould be a part of I like that,
and so I'll start with that.And I think that you know,
once you're involved, you'll find thatit's contagious momentum. There's aspects that not
(26:33):
only support you in terms of yourbusiness career of your employees, but business
opportunities period. There's a foundation thatprovides the necessary talent to help us grow,
as you've heard both David and Robinspeak about. And then only last
thing I'll say is I moved herefor a job opportunity. Okay, And
I told I remember having this conversationwith my wife. I said, you
(26:56):
know, I'm really excited about goingto the webstitle. I like the people,
I said, but Connecticut, youknow, And she said, uh,
my wife had lived here twice beforeme. Try it. I like
it. I tried it. Iliked it, and you to give it
to give it a try. That'sgood. Your wife's a good woman,
fantastic. Well, you know,we'll kind of work down the line,
you know, David. First offis where can people go to learn more
(27:18):
about the Metro Heart for Alliance andall the work that's been happening on the
economic development front. Sure, soyou know metrohart for dot com obviously,
but you know we really see theday to day as join us on social
media right through the heart for Chamber, through Hype, through the health Counsel,
through the insurance financial Service, whicheverwhichever avenue is of interest to you.

But I would really encourage everybody tofollow the Hertford Chamber along with one
of the other initiatives because it's throughthat, through the Chamber that you're going
to hear about all of the grandopenings, all the ribbon cuttings that we're
doing, and and you know we'redoing them two to three a week,
yes, ribbon cutting. So newbusinesses that are opening, right and figure
(28:08):
out where they are, what theyoffer, We'll walk you through the door,
We'll show you what the menu is. Right, will make you feel
comfortable so that the fear of walkinginto a new place for the first time
is gone. You'll know what toexpect before you even get there. So
follow the Heartford Chamber of Commerce rightbecause at the end of the day,
(28:29):
we need Hartford to be the bestversion of itself. At Cannon, it's
going to take all of us andget seventy five new restaurants and retail established
with opening just in the city ofHartford, and we need all of those
to succeed because seventy five should bejust the start. I love that just
to start. And a little teasertoo is now we're trying to become the
(28:51):
or you know, announcing ourselves maybeas a coffee capital of the world.
And with all the new coffee spots. That's I know, a great new
video that we just shared on theHeartford Chamber. I want to give a
shout out there and Robin, wherecan individuals and listeners go to learn more
