(00:00):
Carvin Colin, Hey, Eliot,Hey, how you doing, dude?
Oh man, pretty good, prettygood. I woke up to a bunch
of text messages saying you're on theradio, you should call in. Well,
you know what I was reading about, and forgive me, like I
didn't. I didn't even put theconnection that you had done a bunch of
stuff when that Linden Tree came downin Bethesda. But I was reading about
(00:24):
you that you've got some exhibit oror some show that you're doing at at
the Kennedy Center this weekend. AndI was fortunate enough at one point.
I won't bore you with how,but I ended up in Sarnia and they
were doing like one of the thingsthat they had going on was a wood
sculpture expo with a bunch of dudeswho had chainsaws, and it was amazing
(00:47):
to watch. And then I sawsome of your stuff. I was like,
Jesus Christ, Colin's great. Likethe guys at Sarnia were just whatever,
and it was impressive. Dude, your work is amazing. Well man,
and thanks well thanks yeah. Yeah. That that show at the Kennedy
Center is a festival they're putting oncalled Reach to Forest I guess they did
(01:07):
it once before with like Reach toRivers. They're just trying to promote the
Reach section of the Kennedy Center, which is kind of like supposed to be
community engagement right area. Sure, but so yeah, so they called me
and asked me to participate, andI'm having fun doing chainsaw demos there on
the weekends. But they have awhole bunch of other cool stuff going on,
(01:30):
including they found an indigenous carver fromthe Amazon in Brazil and they flew
him out here and it's his firsttime on an airplane and on an elevator
and he's using chisels and machetes tocarve kind of in a room nearby to
me too, So it's, oh, that's kind of cool. I think
it's worth coming out. Yeah, that is pretty cool. Hey, Colin,
(01:51):
let me ask you this though,Like, honestly, like Tyler,
Tyler pulled up a bunch of picturesthat of stuff that you've done. Honestly,
dude, you're your work is andit's a little off brand for me
to get all excited about wood sculpture, trust me, but it is.
No, I mean, the workis spectacular. How did he get involved
in well, I was just goingto ask, how do you even get
(02:13):
started doing that? Yeah, well, I think step to zero is kind
of deciding to get out of thesystem and break the mold. There was
definitely a lot of societal pressure tobe normal, and I had a normal
job, and it was step zerowas deciding to quit and become an artist
and make the world more beautiful withmy time instead of making somebody else money.
(02:38):
So that was the first step, and that's kind of the hardest,
But then that step is the hardest. That step is the hardest because you
run the risk of your parents nevertalking to you again. Yeah, yeah,
exactly. Well, it's like youversus all of society, So it's
kind of hard to decide to beyour own boss. It's not just entreprene'
(03:00):
it's artist, which is even crazier. But I think it's super rewarding.
And then I don't know, I'veno regrets. My life is awesome.
But I just asked the chainsaw carverto teach me is the second step,
and he did. Those chainsaw carversare very generous and so am I does
anybody wants to learn chainsaw carving, just call me. I would pay in
(03:23):
it forward. Yeah, I wouldconsider it except for that whole paycheck thing
and like that part, I likeno artistic talent. Hey, I'm gonna
I want to ask you a question. I don't need a number, but
like, do you do well?Like I know that you said you had
a regular job and you were doingall that, Like, do you do
(03:43):
like you support yourself doing this?Right? I do? Now? I'm
yeah. Fortunately I'm lucky enough tobe able to say that. It didn't
start out that way. I definitelystarted with some savings from the job,
but now I have a backlist that'scustomers waiting for carving for about a year
now. Oh never mind. Iwas gonna ask, like, if we
whip something up real quickly, Iwant a big Elliott in the Morning logo
(04:04):
for the building. But I gottabe honest, I don't know that I'll
be here a year from now.So unless you could just like move that
up on a special request, wedon't even have to worry about it.
Well, dude, that is theprice. Well there you go, I'll
expense it. Hey the Hey,one other thing, the bench that you
(04:24):
did like for the for the Lindenfor the Linden tree that came down in
Bethesda, and you made the bench, did you get to did you get
to keep any part of the benchor yeah? Yeah, So they they
made a lot of the wood available, so a lot of the people in
the neighborhood took pieces of the wood, like wood turners and stuff took smaller
(04:46):
chunks. But I have one slabfrom the bench when I made the bench
a little bit lower, and that'skind of the biggest piece that kept.
But for the most part, Idon't keep working. The wood is mostly
not very valuable. Everybody's got woods. Well, it's the imagination that's rare.
Oh, I like that. Ilike that. I like that.
(05:10):
Everybody's got a microphone. It's justthe imagination that's rare. It doesn't have
the same ring too really, that'sright, Hey, Colin. Well,
first of all, I'm glad thatI'm glad that everybody texted you. You
should have been up listening to theshow already, but I'm glad that we
got to speak. I'm going todo this. Let me put you on
hold, let me get some infofrom you. I want to make sure
(05:30):
that if I ever need a woodcarver, I know exactly where I'm going.
But one last time, before Iput you on hold? What is
what is all this stuff for thefor the show this weekend, like for
if somebody wanted to come see you. Yeah, So basically, just come
to the Kennedy Center. I'll bethere from eleven to four this weekend.
It's actually going on during the weektwo, just with a little bit different
(05:53):
programming, and then it goes throughMarch third, which I think is Sunday
Sunday. Yeah, correct, Ilike that artist. I don't even know
what day it is. I don'tknow Sunday that matter. The only the
imagination is what's valuable. Whatever.Bro, Hey Colin, I'm glad you
called. Hold on one second? All right, my friend? Hey,
(06:16):
you got it, dude, holdon? How awesome is that
