This is a podcast from WR.Here again is Larry Minty with the WR
Saturday Morning show. Welcome Back. There's a whole lot going on in New
York sports. The Yankees and Metsare beginning their season. The basketball and
hockey playoffs have started in the NBAand the NHL, The NCAA basketball finals

(00:22):
are here, and the NFL Draftis looming. If you don't know sports,
you can be left out of conversations. Well, we have the cure.
You have heard about Terry in thenewsroom many times on WOR. His
name is Terry Treham, and yeshe keeps the newsroom running. It is

(00:43):
well known in the newsroom. Ifyou need something done, you see Terry.
But he also has an incredible knowledgeof sports. He'll fill you in
on what's going on and what youcan say to make you sound smart in
a sports conversation. All right,Terry, first of all, let's start
with Major League Baseball. Okay, what do people Let's forget the Mets and

(01:06):
the Yankees for one second. Tellpeople what they need to know about this
baseball season. Well, this isgonna be an exciting baseball season, and
right now, I think the bestteams are all in the National League.
Now, Yankee fans don't want tohear about that, But the National League
teams. You look at the Dodgers, the money they've spent with Shohai Otani,
You look at the Diamondbacks, andthen you look at the NL East
with the Braves and the Phillies.I think the best teams right now are

(01:29):
in the National League. But theYankees have gotten off to such a quick
start, and Juan Soto has beena revelation for them. Yeah, so
if a Yankees conversation comes up,give me one thing that people can say
that will make them sound very knowledgeable, that'll start a conversation. Well,
I think Juan Soto. He's thebig offseason acquisition that they got, and

(01:49):
he has just been off to sucha quick start, and he's added so
much punch to their lineup. Ithink he's energized Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stan
and he's been terrific for them.Mets are off to a poor start,
unfortunately, but they still have hope. Now they have good offensive players.
Francisco Lindor has gotten off to aslow start. He really needs to pick
it up. But he's a guythat has potential He's a guy who's done

(02:12):
it in the past, and ifhe gets going, the Mets can turn
things around. So do you thinkthe Mets could make the playoffs? I
think they can make the playoffs. Now, look, it's going to be
very tough because the National League Eastis so difficult. We mentioned the Phillies
and the Braves already, so you'realways competing with them. But the Mets
do have talent, and so ifthey can put things together, if they
can get a couple of breaks alongthe way, I think they can potentially

(02:35):
make a run. So some peopleare at a bar, let's just say,
and the one person there doesn't knowsports, and the Mets conversation breaks
out. What's the one thing theycan say? They can fool everybody and
make it sound like they know aboutthe Mets. Is Steve Cohen willing to
make a big deal this season? Now, look, he's spent money in
the past, but last season theytraded off Justin Verlander, they traded off

(02:58):
Max Schurzer. If they make arun here and if they're competitive, is
he willing to make another big trade? Is he willing to go out there
and spend that kind of money toupgrade this roster and make that playoff p
Steve Cohen is the general manager ofthe Mets. He's the owner of the
Mets, billionaire hedge fund runner.Absolutely, so they can say that one
thing and then they can leave theconversation because they sound knowledgeable. Absolutely,

(03:19):
absolut great. Perfect. Now wegot the NBA and the NHL playoffs coming
up. Now, so we gotthe Knicks in the Nets. The Knicks,
I guess, have the better chanceof doing something right. Absolutely.
The Nets have already been eliminated fromplayoff contention. The Knicks are going to
be a top four or five seed. The problem is it was just announced
that Julius Randall is going to beout for the season with shoulder surgery,

(03:42):
and so that's a brutal blow. Now, Jalen Brunson has been terrific for
them, but the problem is hecan't do it alone, and without Julius
Randall, it's going to be reallytough to see them make a run in
the playoffs. So if the Knickscome up, the person that wants to
pretend they know something has to shaketheir head, look sad and go,
that's a horrible news about what JuliusRandel yes, Jeremy. See, I

(04:08):
needed your help. That's why Ibrought you in here to give me a
head. Stanley Cup playoffs. StanleyCup playoffs. The Rangers have the most
points in the NHL. They couldpotentially win the Stanley Cup for the first
time in now thirty years. That'spretty cool. Final four, Final four,
very exciting, both on the men'sside and the women's side. Believe

(04:29):
it or not, you kind ofNC State have teams in both the men's
Final four and the women's Final four, so a very unique situation. But
we also have Caitlin Clark, absolutelybiggest starr in college basketball right now men
or women. Broke the all timeDivision one scoring record. She has been
terrific, so much fun to watch, and she has really really elevated the
women's game. Now. I haveto tell you, I come in early

(04:51):
in the morning. Terry's already here, so I do the five o'clock newscast,
and Terry writes the whole newscast andhas everything ready to go when I
come in. So he has alittle bit of time. What time do
you come in? About two thirty? Jeez? He comes in about two
thirty. He's got everything ready togo. As I said at the top
of the in the intro, he'sthe go to person in the newsroom.

(05:11):
So we have a few minutes totalk and we talk sports almost every morning
about fifteen minutes of sports. Andthe one topic we talk about probably more
than anything else is the NFL Draftbecause it's fun to talk about, it's
exciting to talk about. You havethe Giants and you have the Jets.
The Giants have what the six pick, the sixth pick, and the Jets
are picking number ten. That's atough pick, it really is, because

(05:34):
you really don't know where they're goingto go. First of all, I
think everyone kind of acknowledges that theGiants need a quarterback right now, but
is one going to be available becauseyou have four quarterbacks who might go before
the Giants even pick at number six, And so will they then pick a
wide receiver or are they in asituation where they potentially trade up for one
of those quarterbacks. If they don'tpick a quarterback and a wide receiver falls

(05:59):
to them, they may get thebest player in the draft. Absolutely.
You have two names that people needto know. One is Marvin Harrison Junior,
who people are talking about as thebest wide receiver to come into the
NFL in maybe twenty years. Thesecond player is the LSU wide receiver,
Molik Neighbors. Some people think hemight be even better than Marvin Harrison Junior.
Now with the Jets, I keephearing they're going to take an offensive

(06:21):
lineman. Do protect Aaron Rodgers?Absolutely, I think they're definitely going offense
to try to help Aaron Rodgers.I know you are a big fan of
the Hard Knock Show. The onething that Aaron Rodgers saw him complaining about
during that training camp was the offensiveline protection. Would he have enough time?
Obviously got hurt right away last season. Coming back this year, I

(06:43):
think they upgrade the offensive line.Have you ever thought about doing sports talk
radio? You're way too kind tome. No, I just enjoyed the
conversation that we have had so muchfun in the morning. Yeah. No,
it absolutely is and it gets mestarted. Did I miss anything?
Did I miss anything at all?I think you nail that. I think
we covered the NHL and NBA playoffs, the NFL draft, so I think

(07:05):
we hit it all. Well, you're a big fan. You went to
Mommouth University. I did. You'rea big fan of Monmouth University basketball,
right, probably football too, absolutely, yeah. Football, How are they
doing well? Yeah, they justgot eliminated from the conference tournament unfortunately,
so they didn't make the NCAA tournament. But I think they're on the upswing.
You know, they have some youngtalent. If they bring in a
graduate transfer or so, I thinkthey have a potential to really, you

(07:29):
know, progress and move forward andbe one of the competitive teams in the
CIA going forward. Yeah, andthe football team. The football team once
again in the same situation, secondyear in the conference, so they kind
of need to take a step forward. But a lot of optimism about them
as well. Terry Trayam used todo play by play for the basketball team
at Mommouth University. Is that right? I did? Yeah, a long
time ago. Now unfortunately, see, I'm telling you you'll get the itch.

(07:50):
You're gonna get the itch. We'regonna be hearing you on the radio
very soon. Thank you so much. It was fun. Thank you so
much, Larry, Terry Traam, wor news produce user and sports savants.
