Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning, and welcome to Insight, a show about empowering
our community. I'm Lorraine Baller tomorrow, and as we do
once a month every month, we bring well traveled and
accomplished Vaness Lloyd's combody for a segment we call VLS Journeys. Well, Vaness,
you have returned from your exciting travels to Paris and
the Olympics, so welcome back.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Well, thank you, and I'm catching you on the beginning
of your going to Spain. Yes, you and your husband.
I can't wait for you to come back and do
a whole show on your experience. But yes, I am
just back from the Paris twenty twenty four Olympics and
it was amazing. It was work checking out the games,
a little partying, museum shopping, and lots of eating. Do
(00:45):
you realize, Lorraine, there are fifteen thousand, two hundred and
two legitimate restaurants in Paris.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
I got to see the parade on the sin River.
But in spite of the rain, the city had a
vibrance like I've never experience before I've been in European cities,
Like the day of the royal wedding of willomen K.
Tons of paper events at the Vatican, but this was
different and if you can hop a chief flight go.
I worked, as I mentioned, on a project called Africa Station.
(01:16):
During the Olympics, each country has hospitality houses where people
stop buying the savor information about the country, me participating
Olympic athletes, safer foods from that country, and the opportunity
to watch the games. Basically, it's a chill spot. Africa
Station was held in Saint Denis. It's an area popularly
(01:37):
mostly about over one hundred and eighty one immigrants and
located near the Olympic village that is housing the competing athletes.
So all these African countries got together to showcase the
continent collectively. It was panels, exhibitions and even a concert
with Wu Tang clan because they represented the African American
(01:59):
weekend that was held at African Station. So I produced
this program called the African American Presence in Paris. I
created it, moderated it, and it showcased how French culture
and US history are all sort of intertwined together.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
And for literature, Tara Phillips.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Who is the director of the James Baldwin Director of
Law my Son Bodman, which is celebrating its one hundredth anniversary.
Monique Wells, who is the director of Entree to Black Paris.
You've heard her on the show a number of times.
Music was Ursuline Kirson, who's a jazz singer who brought
the house down literally with her amazing original songs and filmed.
(02:45):
Tory Reid, who you might know the name Read and
the entertainment industry because she was the first black Golden
Globe post and she also is the daughter of Tim
Reid and cousine was Gary Ti Musani. He's a chef
culinary educator who is representing ashbeul mcgeey who's the founder
of the James Hemy Society, which is one of the
(03:05):
sponsors of the event. And even the Mayor of Fulton County,
Koalid Kamu, was bringing some black favorite to the event.
It was so amazing because it gave the African American
side to Africans and like James Hemmys who took a
lot of things, like people don't know that this idea
of cream bake Mcarney came from James Hemmyes who was
(03:28):
a slave of Thomas Jefferson. So it was really great
to present those kinds of panels to educate people abroad
and also the Americans who showed up. But in addition
to producing this event, I also was covering for ere
Web and I did a story about the fashions at
the Anna Win Tour party at the Foundation Louis VU
(03:50):
time and went to a basketball game the women. It
was so amazing. I had great scenes. I felt like
a celebrity. I wore my Sixers jersey, which I'm sure
my family is saying fake because I never wear it
here at home. But if you can get a chief
flight to Paris, their number of protel is still available
a reasonable price. Please please, please try and get out
(04:12):
and do something this summer. If you can't get to
the Olympics, watch them on TV because it really really
is a way to honor those athletes in their hard work.
But this morning I have a very special guest. Her
name is Kimberly A.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Lloyd.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
She's the president of the Ogontz Avenue. The Vitalization Corporation
finally known as ORC Corporation, is doing a lot of
good things in the community. She'll talk about that. You
might know the name from the Western Plain Jazz Festival
and I understand they might be bringing it back. But
she's also president of the Philadelphia Alumni chapter of Delta
(04:47):
Sigma Theta sorority, and sororities have been in the news
because of Kamala Harris, who is an AKA. I'm a AKA.
It really happens to be adulta. She also happens to
be my sister. They will be celebrating with over fifteen
thousand deltas, so when you see all this red and
white walking around, you will know the Deltas are in
(05:08):
the house. But I think it's important for people to
know that you can participate because there is a community
impact event that's going to be open to the public,
and Kimberly's going to tell us a little bit more
because she is my baby sister and I'm so proud
of her. Tell us what you do and how we
can participate in this event coming up.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
Good morning, and thank you so much for that wonderful introduction. Vness.
Good morning, Lorraine as well as I'm very happy to
be on the program this morning to talk about two
things that I love tremendously. First and foremost, community service
has always been at the heart within our family. That's
just a telling story in terms of the nest of
(05:50):
both of us belonging to Black Greek letters sororities and
belonging to alumni chapters here in Philadelphia. What I do
to earn a wage is that I am President CEO
again of Ogonta Avenue Fritalization Corporation finally known as ORC,
and we do a number of programs here, particularly in
(06:11):
the West of Planes section of Philadelphia, which we call
Uptown Uptown. In the House always our Mayor Cherrell L. Parker,
is from the Uptown section of Philadelphia, so we're well
represented throughout all the four corners within this city. Yes,
I'm President CEO of ORC, but even more importantly, I'm
here to talk about the Deltas. The sorority which I'm
(06:33):
a member of and have been for over thirty years,
will be arriving and to Philadelphia starting on Wednesday, August
to fourteenth. Our theme which is elevating sisterly affection, strengthening
our roots in the East and so the Deltas, which
was founded at Howard University in nineteen thirteen. We start
off with our community impact program which we will be
(06:56):
at five recreation centers here in the city of Philadelphia.
And then on Thursday, August fifteenth, we go right into
our very public meeting which will feature the Deltas as
well as the d Nines. Who knows, maybe Kamala will
show up, which would be a great thing, but that
is an opportunity for anyone to come and find out
about what the d Nines are. Thereafter, we will have
(07:18):
a series of different activities for the Deltas, and so
we have coined the phrase the Deltas will be in
Philadelphia doing community impact as well as economic impact because
on Thursday we will take over the Fashion District Mall.
We are the first organization Black White, however you want
to call it. We are the first organization to take
(07:40):
over the Fashion District Mall entirely to be able to
welcome our over fifteen thousand members that will come. Our
theme for that event is a taste of Philadelphia, not
a meal, and also the sounds of Philadelphia, so we're
looking forward to eating cheese steaks, hogies, and dancing and
singing into the sounds of gamble and huff. So please
come down to our public meeting, which is going to
(08:01):
be Thursday, August the fifteenth, starting at six pm.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Of course, since I have you on the air this morning.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
As anyone knows, I often talk about my parents, who
are major, major readers.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
And so I want to know what is Philadelphia reading.
And my guest is Kimberly Anne Lloyd. So let's get started.

am a member golden star as they would say. So
thank you very much, Kim, and I look forward to
seeing you at the public. Media and folks has always
continued to read, buy a book and of course hype
A blessed it And that.
