Speaker 1 (00:00):
When the on air mic goes off, the talk Talk begins.
It's Talk Talk with Martha Quinn.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Oh, such a good one.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Funny, We're so rich, so so tradal, ladies, ladies, ladies,
and everybody listening. This is the beginning of Talk Talk
with Martha Quinn. It's always an improv beginning.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
We don't go.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
For, you know, prepackaged beginnings. You get something unique every
single week. Sometimes that's a good thing, and sometimes you know,
you wonder maybe they should go to the prepackaged thing.
But it's always unique. It's always cutting edge. It's punk
rock in that regard. Yes, it is just call us
(00:53):
the Ramones. Welcome to Talk Talk with Martha Ramone, or
say for this week, this is what's the podcast that
unites me and the morning show that we have here,
The Morning Drive with Christy Live Ladies, Christy and Karina
of Alaska's so together.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
We'll say a big hey.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
Hey girl, Hey, Well that wasn't together.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
But okay, I tried to, like bee like a conductor
to kind of clue you in too what I was
thinking like and who came up with the very fascinating
topic this week. I know it wasn't me, was it
you Christy or was it you Karina of Alaskas?
Speaker 4 (01:32):
Because I like it it was me Karina of Alaska's
were on episode and Welcome by the Way to two.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Hundred and thirty five.
Speaker 4 (01:39):
But I started thinking about the awesome women of rock
and roll or the women of rock.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
She actually saw meme online.
Speaker 5 (01:48):
I did see a.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
Meme online and it had a mount Rushmore of women,
and I was thinking to myself, that's a great question,
because I want to know who you would all pick
and put on your Mount Rushmore of women.
Speaker 5 (01:59):
There's only four heads, right, Just to be clear, there's
only four heads.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Well, there's three of us that we can put three heads, No,
we could do four?
Speaker 6 (02:05):
Are we gonna do?
Speaker 3 (02:08):
If we're still wrangling about it? We can do a
lightning round? Or we'll start with one a piece.
Speaker 5 (02:16):
The women of Mount Rockmore. Is that better?
Speaker 1 (02:20):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (02:21):
Okay, the women of Mount Rockmore.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
I like it.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Okay, Karina of Alaskas. Why don't you start?
Speaker 5 (02:26):
All right? I am going to pick Debbie Harry of Blondie.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Oh interesting? Why?
Speaker 4 (02:32):
I think that she's done a lot of iconic songs.
Speaker 5 (02:36):
I guess she was more considered what punk punk rock?
Speaker 1 (02:40):
No, I would say pop rock, I would say pop.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
I would say I would say in the in the
early days, she was definitely punk rock. She and her
you know Blondie. Yeah, they were came up in the
CBGB's crowd alongside talking heads and all of that. So
I would say that that was definitely her beginnings. Though
I totally understand Christy saying oh, no, she's more pop rock,
because then later Blondie went on to have massive, big hits.
(03:04):
So but I would say her beginning was probably in
the punk rock world, at least the cd CBGB's world,
which wasn't really a spot for like rockers so much.
I would say Max's Kansas City and New York City,
where like Aero Smith first played and Kiss first played,
(03:25):
was maybe more of a rock thing. But I don't know,
I get your point. I think she's punk, but I
think she's big as a female in rock. So that's
your choice for what is it again? The women a
Mountain Matt rock rock more?
Speaker 5 (03:37):
Okay?
Speaker 4 (03:37):
Yeah, And I guess I think some people would put
her because, like as you said, Martha not necessarily rock
with people consider her a punk icon, but then people
also look at her as the hits from like what
would be considered disco part of glass Rapture In a second.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Well, Rapture trivia question. Rapture is the first number one
song to feature rap?
Speaker 2 (03:58):
What rap?
Speaker 1 (03:59):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (04:00):
Yes, exactly, fun Factor really quickly that I saw on
SNL when they did their fifty ath special. I was
telling Christy that it was actually Debbie Harry who brought
the first rap group onto SNL to perform. Never who
was it it was? Was it like Fab five Freddy, That's.
Speaker 6 (04:17):
What I thought, But it was Funky fred and the
Fabulous four or something yeah, which I thought was Fab
five Freddy because I.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Was like, well, that's right, five people and spread so.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
Well because Fab five Freddy was mentioned in Rapture, right,
Funky four plus one was the.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Group which I thought was Fab five Freddy.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
Yeah, no, there was a female in it, so Funky
four plus one and Debbie Harry saw them performing on
in New York City on the streets and was like,
I really liked them and told SNL let's bring them
on as a rap group during one of her sets,
and sure enough, that's how the rap game got started
on SNL.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
Amazing Well like it?
Speaker 5 (04:54):
Yeah, I like that, so all right, that was my pick. So,
Debbie Harry, for the women of Mount Rockmore, who do
you pick?
Speaker 3 (05:02):
I think, Christy James, you are gonna pick who I
would pick. So I'm gonna go with my second choice.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
No no, no, no, no, okay no.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
No, because because this way, I'm pretty sure that who
I would pick is going to have a place. So
I'm gonna bet on that, Okay, So I'm gonna go
with Janis Joplin. She was one of the first female
rock singers and she had the most amazing voice. And
if you watch the documentary of The Grateful Dead taking
(05:31):
a train across the United States, you can hear Janie.
She was there on the on the train and you
can hear her singing, and they have some clips of
her on stage and she's like jaw droppingly amazing. And
I think, and let me check with Ai really quick,
I think that Janie has Robert Plant ever mentioned Janis
(05:55):
Joplin as an influence her bluesy sound. I think Robert
Plant was picking up. Yes, Rubber Plant has acknowledged Jennis
Joplin as an influence and has spoken highly of her
impact on rock music. So for my second female on
Mount Rockmore, I'm gonna go with Janice Joplin.
Speaker 5 (06:18):
That's not bad, Christy, that was pretty good. Thank you,
that was pretty good.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Let's heart, let's hearn.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
Oh, Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz? Come
on you, Lord, won't.
Speaker 6 (06:29):
You buy me Mercedes ben You know I was actually
listened to that song a couple of days ago.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
So random, you're kidding. No, I'm not kidding. I was
totally listening to that song a couple of days ago.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
That is so random random.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
I was rocking to Jennis Joplin at my house.
Speaker 6 (06:48):
Yeah it was crazy, but you know I love music,
all tides of music.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
So yeah, Christy, Okay.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
So we're gonna put Janie on Mount rock More and
I've got all my fingers and toast crossed right now.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
I'm on the edge of my seat. Christie.
Speaker 6 (07:06):
I think you think who I thought Corina was gonna pick,
But I'm thinking of somebody else.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
So on the count of three, we're.
Speaker 6 (07:14):
Gonna say who you think it is, Martha Quinn because
I'm not gonna say who I thought Karna was gonna pick.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
I'm gonna say who I was gonna pick. You follow me, yeah,
follow you? Okay? On the count of three. We're gonna
say it one, two, three, You said.
Speaker 5 (07:32):
It all late.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
Yeah, it was a little like Martha Quinn, but you tried.
You tried.
Speaker 6 (07:37):
Did you think I was gonna say Tina Turner or
did you think I was gonna say Stevie Nicks. Okay, well,
Martha Quinn is psychic. We're finding that out today.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
M hmm.
Speaker 5 (07:46):
She's got like ESPN or something.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
Yes, let me just understand this.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
You thought I thought you were gonna pick Stevie Nicks.
Speaker 6 (07:55):
Yes, because I thought Corina was gonna say Stevie Nicks.
And I thought you thought I was gonna say that.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Interesting.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
Yeah, I did not think of Stevie Nicks on this list.
I know people are right now are gasping and saying,
how could you not, Martha Quinn?
Speaker 2 (08:12):
I did not.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
I was.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
My first thought was Tina Turner.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
Yeah, and then I thought, well, maybe Christy's gonna take Tina.
So I'm gonna go with Janis because I want to
be sure that Tina's on the mount rock more of
female rockers, and so who were you gonna pick?
Speaker 2 (08:28):
Oh, you were gonna.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
Pick Mark and Quinn is psychic.
Speaker 6 (08:31):
She has definitely nailed it number one by far rocker
with soul, and you know a lot of people don't
know that she is like a rocker, like that's what
she was, you know, really in that lane, trying to
be in that lane.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
Everything about her, her show performance, singing.
Speaker 6 (08:51):
Her passion and the grit, it's all rock and roll
and Tina Turner is that plus soul and just an
amazing woman.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
It's Women's History.
Speaker 6 (08:59):
Month, got shout out some amazing women and Tina man,
she just everything she's been through and just made it through.
And yeah, yeah, she's great and her voice is like
second to none.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
It's simply the best. WHOA Okay, that wasn't a great?
Speaker 4 (09:15):
Let Tina well real quickly though, just in case people
have never heard this little short short story, weren't you
gifted something by the icon that is Tina Turner?
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Martha Quinn I was Tina Turner, came into the MTV
studios and we're chit chatting as ladies do about clothes,
and I said that I loved the dress that she
wore in the Private Dancer video.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
It was really cute, little lacy dress.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
And a couple of weeks later, I got an envelope
and I opened it and I just saw, you know,
my eyes fell upon a little patch of red lace
with sequence on it, and I can remember that feeling.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
I just went, oh, she sent me the dress.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
And of course it came with a letter, which I
immediately through in the trash because I was like, oh
my gosh, this dress. Get rid of all this packaging,
get rid of all this authentication.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
But I didn't know who knew, who knew.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
I wasn't an archivist, but I did have that dress.
You can go and watch the video for Private Dancer,
and it is currently in the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame, and they're always asking I have it on
loan there, and they're always asking me, do you want
to donate it. I'm not quite ready to fully donate it,
but it is there.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
Yeah, I agree.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
So we have Debbie Harry, who kind of brought punk
into rock and roll. We have Janis Joplin who brought
you know, helped infuse the blues into rock and roll.
That's such a fine line, but that's what, you know,
a lot of what she did. And then we have
Tina Turner, who infused rock and roll with an R
and B vibe so gritty and you know, totally from
(10:52):
the streets of Nutbush, Tennessee.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
So I think we have three lovely ladies.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
On Mount Rockmore, do we want to do a lightning
round and make it six people on there? In case
we want to add in case the stone carvers want
to pick up some overtime.
Speaker 6 (11:08):
I think we can just give an honorable mention to
Stevie Nicks because none of us thought about her.
Speaker 4 (11:14):
John Jed I was gonna go with John Jay, Yeah, I.
Speaker 6 (11:18):
Mean what about current artists? I think a current artist
would be nice. I mean you have to be kind
of like classic to be on.
Speaker 7 (11:25):
The Okays anybody, why not?
Speaker 6 (11:38):
If no, when Stefani can go and she's punk, Pink
is pop? So is Gwen Stefani? Would she started with
punk kind of like Blondie. She started with punk moved
into pop. So you get Gwen Stefani. Martha Quinn gets pink,
and I'm gonna give it to Rihanna because I love Rihanna.
Speaker 8 (11:56):
My god, whatever you want amazing, and she's done, and
we could go with Christy Well, I might get we
have some great what's her name behind no Florence from
Florence and in the Machine. Yeah, she's a good rock singer.
Speaker 5 (12:12):
All right, well.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
There is all right. Well, on that note, you should
have just went with Stevie Nicks and called it to day.
Speaker 4 (12:19):
Here you go.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
I definitely think Jane Jet should be up there.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
I do.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
She is a rocker, she's personification.
Speaker 5 (12:27):
No, she's the queen of rock and roll.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
No she's not.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
No, No, the Queen of rock and roll is Tina
turn Thank you.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
That's not Jon Jet.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
I think the Queen of soul.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
Is a Wretha Franklin. Queen of rock and roll is
Tina Turner.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
No, yes, dubbed Jon Jet.
Speaker 5 (12:44):
The Queen of rock and roll.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
Her people. Well that was fine.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
Shout out to Michael Jackson for calling himself the king
of pop. Let's just give him some props.
Speaker 6 (12:57):
It is.
Speaker 2 (12:58):
That's what I call marketing.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
I like it.
