Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Cody Cast. This is Cody Allen's podcast. We're
gonna make a super Bowl prediction. Coming up with my
guest Kip More his Wild World Deluxe album out on
February twelve. He's one of the most interesting people I
ever interview. UM. Compelling and such a character, and yet
so artistic and intense about his art, about making music,
(00:25):
about performing. UM. So let's get him on the phone here, Kip,
are you there? How you doing? Fantastic? Man? How about you?
I'm pretty good. I know you're happy you got to,
um do television with Katie Cook and not me. I
was a little thrown off at first. She's much better looking.
(00:45):
Let's face it, She's great. She's amazing. I'm excited to
talk to you though as well. UM. Tell me what's
it going to be like at the Ryman next month
with people at a concert again? You know? UM, I
guess I'll have to tell you when it's over. UM.
(01:05):
I know that I can't. I know that I'm looking
forward to it. Um. Uh, you know more than anything.
I just I was saying this earlier. I wanted to
be in the Heartbreakers when I was a kid, I
wanted to be in the East Street E Street Band.
You know, it was like I just I wanted to
be in a band. I wanted to make music. I
wanted to write songs with a band. UM, And we've
done a lot of that over the last few years.
(01:27):
And UM, I'm like more than anything looking forward to
being on the stage with those guys when spontanees happening
and we're and we're letting it go and we're going
for things that we wouldn't normally go for, and there's
those moments. So that's what I'm looking forward to. Have
you jumped back on the bus at all over the
(01:47):
past a little bit, or just like for old times sake,
maybe just take it for a spin around the block
or something. We had. We had one show down in
southern Florida maybe back in I don't know, November October, UM,
so that was the only time we've been on the
bus in a year prior to all this. UM me,
(02:08):
before you became a big start. UM, were you a
big concert go or you talked about Tom Petty and
um and and the Boss. Did you go to a
lot of shows? Um as a kid? I didn't. There
was I can't ever remember any concerts coming through our town,
none that were close by. UM. I didn't start going
to concerts until I was in college. UM. And then
(02:31):
we would drive to Birmingham, UM, Oak Mountain Amphitheater, I
can see widespread panic, and I go see different rock
bands and uh, we we actually saw Shani Twain there. Um. Yeah,
we would we would go see we saw Tim McGraw.
You know, it was like all that kind of stuff.
So in college I became obsessed with the Allman Brothers, UM,
(02:52):
and we would try to strike out for Birmingham whenever
we could. And is that when the spark happened, Like
I want to be up there. I want to be
the guy doing us. You know. I think I think
the seed was planned long before that. I think my dad, luckily,
UM wasn't you know. You know, I'm not gonna I'm
not gonna dis on any other kind of music. But
(03:13):
luckily he was playing Credence and Springsteen and Jackson Brown
and these people that are you know, now considered American
singer songwriter icons, you know, and Petty and he was
playing that music and I was I noticed that I
was quickly enthralled by the lyrics. I was so into
the lyrics, and I hadn't yet, you know, experienced any
(03:34):
of that, but I was just I was already trying
to write lyrics and songs before I could even play.
So I think that it already gotten inside my bones.
But it wasn't untol a little later in life and
I was and Alabama playing basketball when I realized I
actually want to play music, and I bought a little
pawn shop guitar, little Yamaha, and then I just became
(03:56):
obsessed with it and everything else took a back seat.
It's obviously all worked out. UM, let's talk about the
deluxe version of Wild World, out on February twelve. What
is different about the deluxe versus the prior album? UM?
I mean, I wouldn't say there's a whole lot different,
because the way that I do a deluxe record, UM,
with the three of the four records that I've done
(04:18):
it with, I pull songs that I actually recorded for
that record. So it was cohesive with that record just
for some reason or another. UM, and it didn't make
the final you know, eleven, twelve, thirteen, or whatever, So
you know, whenever I don't. And what I mean by
that too is I don't write new stuff or deluxe
(04:41):
because that deluxe. And that's why I purposely, you know,
over tracked two so that I can pull songs back
to it, because I'm already writing a new project in
my head space is already just in a very different
headspace and I was when I did Wild World. So
I try to stay very present with where I'm at
when I'm doing a new project. So that's why I
pull the old songs that I made for that project
(05:03):
can put them on there has the past year and
all the weirdness going on with the world, has that
affected your song writing at all? Are there themes or
anything that relates back to if you will, I would say,
in an indirect way, you're not gonna get COVID songs
from me. It ain't happening, thank you, y'all. Probably you're
(05:25):
probably about to get bombarded with those, and I just
that's just not the way I operate. Um. I do
think there's things that indirectly affect my writing from COVID,
but you're not gonna hear me speaking about COVID directly
or staying, you know, let's all keep together. I'm just
I'm just not that kind of writer. Um, I don't.
(05:47):
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, but I
think you're about to get a flood of those, um,
And I'm just trying to write more of what's really
in my heart. Ah yeah, you won't catch me pandering
to the moment. I'm gonna write what I'm really feeling
and what I think people are actually feeling in their bones.
(06:08):
New Year, knew you uh a lot of people taking
resolutions about fitness. And you're a super fit guy. So
what would you say that people who are you know,
challenging themselves this year to get in better shape? What
are there any secrets to it? The first secret is
you gotta you gotta, you gotta get off the couch
(06:29):
and get to it. That's the first secret. Um. I
mean you you work out a lot of cody. I
mean you you know what it takes. Um. It's really
tough for me on the road because I'm you know,
I make it a point because you can quickly get
out of the routine and staying fit is very much
about a way of life, and it's a routine. And
for me, it's um knowing that that's the first thing
(06:53):
I do every single morning when I roll off that bus,
I find it, I'm right away, and I put an
hour in fifteen minutes in every single day. Um. I
try to eat clean, I try to eat good foods Um.
You know, I crave like everybody else does. I'm a
sucker for a doughnut, a burger, and pizza. I love
all that stuff. Tequila. I mean, I definitely, I definitely
(07:14):
still partake in all those things. But I feel like
if you spike your levels enough by really getting after
it once you're in there. And I think there's one
more key. I see people so often they get into
the gym, they've already made the committed to be there,
but then they barely get after it once they're in there.
So you defeated the whole purpose of even taking that
hour out of your day to do that. It's like,
(07:35):
so I make sure that I'm going foot on the
gas as hard as I can every single time that
I go in there. And finally, super Bowl Predictions, Bucks, Chiefs,
what do you say? You know? Um, my heart says Brady,
My pocketbook says Chiefs. Uh my while says Chiefs book.
(08:02):
But my my my wallet says Chiefs. But but you know,
you also it's hard to go against the guy that's
got six. That's all I'm saying. So and so I
got home. They're at home. The super Bowl is being
played in their hometown. It's crazy. I yeah, I am
with you, but I I also think it's Tom Brady.
(08:27):
It's just unpredictable and it's at their hometown. I mean,
I'm That's why I'm saying bucks, but I'm with you
on Mahomes and the whole Chiefs thing being so incredible.
I mean, yeah, you know, I just I find myself
pulling for Brady so much right now. I just think
it's the most I don't think people are wrapping their
heads around how unbelievable this run is that he's on.
(08:51):
He's forty three years old and he's in another super Bowl. Like,
it's just Mahomes. It was the saying was a kindergartener
when Brady played his first super Bowl. It's insane. Tom
Brady has been an eight percent of all the Super
Bowls ever played. It's nuts and listen. I was kind
(09:15):
of I'll be honest, I was kind of a Brady
hater for when he was with the Patriots, just because
I just always won. He was always, you know, but
I'll tell you this, last year I became more of
a fan of him just because of the bounce back
and going into a brand new circumstances, bringing Gronk there
and like making it happen again. I just you gotta that.
(09:36):
People just don't. It's a whole new offensive scheme to learn.
And he's that good that he's brought the worst franchise
in football history is now in the super Bowl. It's incredible. Respect.
Just I feel like Luke Colins is the new Tom Brady.
I feel like, you know, he's got seven songs on
(09:57):
the charts at all times, and every time you get
in the car, it's Luke Combs. He's Tom Brady. Yeah,
there's no way around it. He's just dominating it, you
know what I mean? And I think ten am I am?
I remember? Right? Is it ten number It's not ten
number ones in a row. But every song he's released
has been a number one so far. I mean, like
(10:19):
every time I turn on my stereo, it's it's one
of Luke Coom's songs. Like this guy. These songwriters, man,
they are just they're at some happy clans right now. Man,
And why is it I mean, is I sit around
and think none of us really would have seen that
coming from Luke Combs because he doesn't you know, he
(10:41):
doesn't appear to be like that superstar status kind of guy.
And yet doesn't it come back to just the music
is so good. I mean, the songs are just there,
and if the song is there in country music, it's
almost like everything else doesn't matter. Yeah, right, Like I
just feel like Aaron Rodgers. Man, he just keeps dominating
(11:03):
me every single time. You know, you're doing fun real
quick before I let you go. When it comes to
when you're not listening to like commercial radio, Um, who
are you listening to these days that you're sort of loving?
Um in your in your spare time, you know, fool.
I've been listening to a lot of different things lately. Um,
(11:25):
I've I've I love the thing a ratl Off. Yeah. Man,
he's got such a soulful groove to him. Um. I
just I just really enjoyed listening to that guy. Um,
he's one of them for sure. Um so yeah, I
mean I would say he's the first one that comes
to mind, you know. And then I've I've been drawing
(11:46):
on an old classic. I've been listening to Uh, the
Tunnel Love record by Springsteen in my house, just over
and over. Such a good one. Dude, it's so weird
you say that. I mean, this is just synergies or something.
But I literally heard that song. It may have been like,
I don't know, like Walgreens or something. I'm walking through
and I heard that song over the speed. I'm like,
I want let me go back and hear that song again.
(12:10):
And so and this was two days ago. I went
back and listen to that tune because I had the
same like, that's such it's just great music, you know,
so um, it's incredible. So strange you say that. But
if you get a chance, turn all the lights out tonight,
get in the zone and listen to Walk like a
Man from that record. Okay, get you a drink, cut
(12:33):
out the lights, all the all the distractions, listen to
Walt like a Man and jack the volume and tell
me if that doesn't get just seat down deep in
your bones and it's it's it's it's unbelievable. I'm gonna
do it. Kip, thanks for the time. I appreciate it.
