Welcome to our two of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by
Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
All right, welcome back our number two, Ryan, Drew and
Shannon Here Kentucky Sports Radio live at Chaos Bar and
Grill where doors are open down for lunch. Got some
people already coming in here for lunch, and we're joined
our guest today, Tom Leachs, the voice of the Kentucky Wildcats,
and Tom on the Avis a Glass tech mean says,
the most chosr thing ever just happened. Quote let's do

(01:25):
and ask anything Friday with a thirty second timer for callers.
Great idea, but one problem, the phone lines are down.
I mean, welcome to our show. Tom, This is kind
of how things go. You told a great story. Can
you tell that story?

Speaker 3 (01:39):
The picture that Corey Price posted for folks who seen
that they was my senior year playing baseball, and that
was out of a newspaper at a small town up
in southwest Ohio. Because in nineteen seventy seven, the coach
at Franklin, Ohio High School, Doug Long I believe was

(02:01):
his name, and my coach at Bourbon County, Larry Conrad,
were fraternity brothers at Georgetown College. I had been fraternity
brothers at Georgetown College. So they had an idea start
this series, and it started in seventy seven with Franklin,
Ohio coming to Paris and they played games against Bourbon
County Paris and Harrison County I think, and then the

(02:22):
next year Bourbon County would go to Franklin and play
games over a weekend. And this went on for probably
a couple of decades. Anyway, the very first year was
seventy seven. Franklin comes to Paris to play games there.
And the way the thing worked to keep the costs
down for the schools and be able to do this.

(02:44):
The booster clubs fed the players, but they need to
have somebody you stay overnight, played on Friday, the host
family there you go. And so the way it worked
is every one of the Bourbon County players would take
one Franklin player home for the night. Sure, and then
the next year would flip the other way. So in
nineteen seventy seven, luck of the draw, I got as

(03:07):
signed the catcher from Franklin, who was a year ahead
of me.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Dave Baker, that's crazy, Dave Baker, You had no idea
who he was, He didn't know who you were. You
end up spending the night with him, Yes, going up
there and now you guys have been working together down
here for forty years.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
And then that's six o'clock on Saturday morning. My dad
woke us up because somebody had driven through the fence
in the front of the farm and the cattle were
on the road, and so Dave is out chasing cattle
off Russell Cave Road at six point thirty in the morning.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
That is too funny. What a great story.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
All right?

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Eight five two two eight seven. You want to call
and ask Tom a question. I think our phone lines
are up and working now, Shannon, So who do we have.
Let's go to Sherry. Sherry. Go ahead, Sherry Cherry, I
just have I.

Speaker 4 (03:50):
Just have one thing to say about the introduction for
Mark Pope. Nobody ever gives Matt Jones credit for that.
He was on his show that morning and he said
he was going and he expected Big Blue Nation to
show up. That's all I wanted to say.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
Thank you, Sherry, appreciate it. That was a special moment.
You talked about it. Two of my favorite moments don't
even involve a game. In that Raperena, when the ninety
sixteen bus rolled over in the championship and then when
Mark Pope rolled in on the bus. I mean, those
didn't win even a game. Those are two of my
favorite moments in that arena.

Speaker 3 (04:23):
Something else is a side note from nineteen seventy seven.
The aforementioned nineteen seventy seven. The only time I think
there was a longer line outside Rupperina was for what
Elvis Presley tickets. Oh, my goodness, and my best friend's
aunt wanted thirty tickets and there was a limit of ten,
so she paid three of us to camp out, and

(04:46):
the line by the time the tickets went on sale
on Sunday around noon, the line completely, almost completely wrapped
around Rapperena. It was down High Street, down what was
in Jefferson Street, Vye Street, back up Broadway and almost
made a complete circle around the block.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
And he'd never made the concert, right.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Right, Yeah, he passed away before that, right before that concert,
so I made it. Was there. It was up that
Saturday and Sunday for thirty three hours without sleeping, my goodness,
and made I think thirty dollars to the.

Speaker 5 (05:18):
Young Tom Leach back when he was calling his shot
as the future voice of the Wildcats. I mean, obviously
he didn't go straight from high school to calling games
did you find yourself calling any obscure sports or having
to learn something new just to get something well experience
under your belt.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
Uh No, it was always you know, high school football
and basketball. I think I've called one baseball game and
it was an exhibition game in the fall between Kentucky
and Louisville that we did on the radio just locally.
And then I think I called a volleyball match one time.
Remember Sports Channel. Oh yeah, it was a regional thing

(05:53):
kind of like Bally Sports is now for Reds games,
and you know, I think called volleyball match. Uh maybe
with Debbie Mulligan. I think it was with Debbie, who's
now does a lot of stuff for ESPN, CBS. It's
really good. I think it was with Debbie and Kathy
de Boor was the coach. He was really good and

(06:15):
uh anyway, yeah, that's that's the only uh thing I
can remember. And then some horse racing stuff.

Speaker 5 (06:20):
So when you if you weren't doing football or basketball,
this was actually a Tyler Thompson question. You know, Tyler,
which sport would you think you would be best at
or when you could see yourself doing If you weren't
doing the two.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
You probably one of two baseball, just because that was
always my best sport and uh a big baseball fan
that would just have never had. It's a much different
challenge of for a broadcasting standpoint, because you've got a
lot more time to fill and tell them more stories
and any other thing would be to uh be a

(06:50):
race caller. And I've never done it, and the timing
never would work out to do it. But if there
was ever like a you know, a couple of week
long meets somewhere in the summer, I could do it.
I think that would be fun.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
Got some callers on the line, Shannon, who's next?

Speaker 2 (07:04):
Fake Ralph Hacker?

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Oh, best stress man and radio fake.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
Ralph Hacker, You're only your hero, Tom Leach.

Speaker 6 (07:13):
Hello, Ryan, Shannon Drew and of course the current radio
voice of the Wildcats and my.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
Successor, mister Tom Leach.

Speaker 6 (07:24):
Tom is so good to hear your voice on the
radio here in the summer time.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
What are you doing?

Speaker 3 (07:31):
Not doing much of anything, taking a little downtime. So
going to a couple of baseball games this.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
Weekend sounds like a winner, you know.

Speaker 6 (07:42):
Uh, these guys give me a hard time all the
time for calling the radio program and referring to you
as screaming leech.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
Have you ever heard of anything? And where that comes from?

Speaker 6 (07:53):
And I should qualify this and so you would know
where that comes from. There was a caller who used
to be on another radio station on the postgame shows,
and he would often refer to you.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
As screaming leach. Oh, so I sort of adopted that time.
But it's a term of endearman.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
Well, I appreciate that. It's always good to hear Ralph's
voice your time.

Speaker 6 (08:17):
You're one of the finest radio play by play men
in the country and I mean that sincerely, and I'm
so happy and proud that you were my.

Speaker 1 (08:26):
Successor there we go.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
Thank you very much.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
Thank you, Ralph Hacker. Fake Ralph Hacker. Oh sorry, I
appreciate you. Uh. I know people have asked you this before.
But like we have a big game or big moment,
do you write down like what you want to make
sure you say if it's a game winning run or
play or touchdown or.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
The only No, no, it would be it, because it's
just it would it would sound like it was written down. Huh.
And you know, you never know how the moment's gonna
play out. The only the National Championship game in twenty
two well, because those calls live on good or bad,
and I all day was kind of just I was

(09:09):
thinking because I thought Kentucky probably win, but not assured,
but like, if they win, what might sound good. I
didn't didn't write anything down, but I didn't, you know,
think a little bit about it over the course of
the day, and I never al throughout the day, never
really came up with anything that, you know, I wanted
to keep. And then finally about halftime of the game,
I was walking back to the seat and I thought, well,

(09:31):
they would just do like a countdown or something if
it if it works, if it fits, and you know,
sometimes had it been a last second shot, maybe it
wouldn't have wouldn't have worked. So that's that's about the
only time I really even thought much about it. The
touchdown Kentucky thing kind of came about organically because the
first two or three games it wasn't that and and

(09:53):
I think Jim Host had said, you ought to try
to find something that feels comfortable. It's kind of like
a home run call, a touchdown call, you know, because
it doesn't happen that often in the game. And I
think it was the game up in Indiana. Kentucky won
forty nine to seven and Tim through seven touchdown passes,
and I think I must have said it early and

(10:14):
because they kept scoring, it's got said often, and it
just kind of took off from there. Felt comfortable.

Speaker 5 (10:20):
The final fours in the championship stand out. But in
rap Arena, is there game that got you a little
more excited than others? Any any of those stand out?

Speaker 3 (10:28):
First one that just popped into my head was the
Taishan game where he hit five threes at the beginning
of the North Carolina game, which was in my first year.
I mean in football my first year I had the
Alabama rush the field game, and in basketball I had
that even though the season didn't turn out great, I
had that game my first year, so I was was

(10:48):
very lucky. You know that one?

Speaker 1 (10:55):
Well, that one was what Tasha used to call.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
All the Anthony Davis block. Again, that was a fair
line of play.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
When you call used to call the athletic office at
UK and they put you on hold, you hear the play,
and that Taysham play always played from the logo. And
then Paul is about two thousand.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
And one, Yes, there was also there's one that's an
obscure one that's a memory for b because you know,
I was doing football and Ralph was still doing basketball,
and you never know, you know, he might have decided
to do it twenty more years, and you know, then
the timing would have never worked out for maybe a
chance to add this the other sport. So it's about

(11:36):
in December of ninety nine. Maybe Ralph called one year,
it was like December of ninety eight, I think, and
he called the day of the game and had laryngitis
and told me to be ready, and I sat with him,
and I think it was Sam Booie the whole game,
and Ralph got through it. The next year, it was
the Louisville game. Again, it was really ironic, and he

(11:56):
called and said, you know, same thing, and he had laryngitis.
He didn't know if he could go, and he couldn't
that day, and so I and that to the point
being that that was the first Kentucky basketball game I
ever called, and I didn't know if there'd ever be
a second one, So that one kind of always was
a special memory.

Speaker 1 (12:12):
We got, let's get one more caller before we let
you go. Chanlet's squeeze on one more caller. Who we
got all r Let's go to Kurt. Kurt, go ahead,
you're on with Tom Leech.

Speaker 7 (12:20):
Hey, yeah, thanks for thanks for having me on. I
appreciate it. Uh just real quickly for Tom. Uh their
plans for coach Quote to have his own calling show
like Cal used to have, and if so, do you
know when they're going to start those up? I'll hang
up and listen.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
Thanks, appreciate to call.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
Thank you, we lost a little bit of that. I
think he's start about the radio Monday night show.

Speaker 1 (12:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
I assume it'll be just just as as it has been,
which would mean the first Mark Pope show would be
somewhere in late November. Yeah, when we have a couple
of weeks where there's a football and basketball back to back.
I appreciate you coming sitting with do one more segment
if you want.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
You wonder what we got some calls. People don't want
to talk.

Speaker 3 (13:03):
That's not I'll do till the bottom the art because
I want to see what the next song is. Shannon
gets to pick one more song for me.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
All right, we'll be right back. We'll wrapping up with
Tom Leach one more segment call us eight five nine
two A two two eighty seven. This is Kentucky Sports Radio.
Welcome back Kentucky Sports Radio, Ryan Drew and Shannon joined
by Tom Leach. Shannon's playing all your favorite hits right now.

Speaker 3 (13:24):
Yeah. And the other day, you guys, I think I
was listening to when they U at a point where
here's what talking things that make you feel old or whatever.
And I had that moment because I think Drew said
j T was at roupp Arena, James Taylor's coming to
roup tonights that you.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
Know you may be Phil, it's the original j T.
The other night at the Channel eighteen function one Monday night,
when you said Connor was thirty years old thirty one.
I can't believe that your son is thirty one years old.
Holy cow. All right, we got some people we want
to get on for Tom has to leave, So who
he got, Shannon, Let's go to Shano. Shano, go ahead, Hey, guys,

(14:02):
good morning.

Speaker 8 (14:03):
I just wanted to call in and say how thankful
I am and how fortunate we are to have Tom
Leach is our play by play. What a lifeline he
is for me and and our our family. H When
we can't make it to games. Man, it's always I
get cold chills, and you know it's like I said,
just thank you Tom for everything that you do and Drew.

(14:26):
Next time I head down. The next time I head
down to our farm and Marion, we I've got. I
usually leave from Henderson, drive through Morganfield and I'm gonna
stop and get breakfast at the LJS, which is my
I mean when they said that, I generally stop at
the Long John's because it's a it's a guilty pleasure

(14:48):
of mine. My wife knows this all too well. But
I can't wait to have breakfast there. You guys, have
a great day.

Speaker 5 (14:55):
Do us a favor and call us in with a
review after you have it, so we know it's been
a popular time picked the last week Long Johnson.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
We're talking about.

Speaker 8 (15:03):
I'll do it.

Speaker 1 (15:04):
Thanks, guys, appreciate.

Speaker 3 (15:05):
Shane Fish and Eggs.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
That was Sam Ball's son, Shane Shane.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
Okay, right there, All.

Speaker 1 (15:09):
Right, he's next. Let's go to Matt.

Speaker 9 (15:12):
Matt, go ahead, Matt, uh Yeah. My question is for Tom.
A while back on your radio show, you said there
was a product that sinks your radio to TV with
no delays. Could you tell me what that is.

Speaker 3 (15:25):
Please, yeah, And I don't know if it's still out there.
There's two. One was called sports Sink Radio, and we
tried to work with them on doing like some giveaways
or something at one time. Didn't didn't really take off,
and they were out of stock and uh for a
long time. Never did get restocked. So I don't know

(15:46):
if they quit making it or not. But it was
called sports Sink Radio, and I know some people have
used that successfully, but the amount of the delay is limited,
and so there might be times when there wasn't long enough.
There was another when our buddy the passed not too
long ago, Steve Moody. Steve use something called Motron Electronics

(16:07):
and it was a more elaborate system, cost about one
hundred bucks I think, and but he swore by it.
He said it never failed, but it was a little
harder to set up. The other thing I tell people
if you're trying to sync up the radio call of
the TV is find a way to get the TV
ahead of the radio. And if you've got like a speaker,
doc or something and you want to, you can listen
on on the app. And if you listen on the app,

(16:31):
it'll be behind the pictures and then all you do
is pause the TV and sink it up that way.

Speaker 5 (16:37):
That's the easiest with you, That's what I do. You
can hear a shot on the radio, hit the rim
and I hit play. You know, I get the TV
that way.

Speaker 3 (16:45):
Al Robinson, who's former Kentucky player and co came to
practice every day I think with Coach Hall and then
kept doing it after Coach passed. And anyway, Al will
always uh tell us to he wants to make sure
when the balls tossed up in the air and the
tip happens, that I'm the only one talking and that

(17:06):
can be perfectly synced up. And occasionally goose and I'll
be talking about something that might be a half second
behind and we get scolded by Al.

Speaker 1 (17:13):
Let's get another call Shannon, who we got Mark Anthony,
Mark Anthony, go ahead, yo with Tom Leach.

Speaker 10 (17:18):
A good morning cas are guys and mister Leech, sir,
it is an honor just to talk to you on telephone.
You for years had a radio show from the nine
to ten r in which you gave us hard news
and very fad facts, followed by a show which is
foolishness in Factor's optional. Well, all of a sudden, this

(17:39):
Matt Jones goober comes in and says, Tom, I need
you to disrupt your entire life and get up in
our earlier every day and do the eight to nine
because I want to nine to ten. And I could
imagine you said, well, so you're coming in at nine,
and oh, hell no, I'm not coming in I'm gonna
have two other guys come.

Speaker 7 (17:54):
In and do it.

Speaker 11 (17:55):
But how and how in the world did he course
the voice of the Wildcats to shrupt his life and
come in an hour over That's what I've wondered since
it started.

Speaker 3 (18:07):
It wasn't Mack appreciate the shows. We've both been very successful,
and the radio station wanted to sell another hour because
they could, because they can make more money.

Speaker 1 (18:19):
I want to make money.

Speaker 3 (18:20):
They're going to do it, yes, And as much as
we like the Cats, they weren't going to take the
twelve o'clock hour from Rush Limbaugh at that point, so
we had to go back. And so that's that's how
that how that came about. So I understand why they
would have wanted to do that. Uh, My show and
Matt's show started the same day on the one little

(18:42):
station in Louisville.

Speaker 1 (18:43):
It was the same day. Yeah, I didn't realize that. Yea,
So twenty eleven.

Speaker 3 (18:47):
Twenty ten, August of twenty ten, twenty ten.

Speaker 5 (18:50):
Yeah, you obviously get to travel with the with the
teams everywhere they go, aside from the actual sport you're
you're watching when you get there. Do you have one
of a favorite destination. Maybe in the sec you know,
we go to New York a lot, might be going
to Maui in the future. Hopefully you got a place
that you just enjoy when Kentucky plays there.

Speaker 3 (19:07):
The Garden's always fun, especially if we are sitting seated
court side. We're usually for that Champions Classic or the
CBS Sports Classic. Were up what they call the Hockey
press box at the Garden, we're up higher. And but
those occasions, those times when we get court side at
the Garden, because I was a big New York Knicks
fan growing up, and so the Garden is always fun.

(19:29):
I like going to to New you know places. We
get to go to Pauli Pavilion a few years ago.
I know, you guys there for about an hour. Uh
we drove straight there. But you know, doing a game
at Paulie was, you know, first time to do a
game at Kansas was fun. Yeah, the Dean Doome was
fun doing games there because you know, Kentucky's good and

(19:50):
usually the games were good. So, but the Garden is
the first one that popped the mind from a basketball
standpoint from football. You got all those in the SEC.
I think Georgia is my favorite, even though can tell
you I had a lot of success there, and part
of that is selfishly as a broadcaster where and this
is going to change, They're going to move the press box.

(20:11):
But the press box in our broadcast booth is between
the two decks, so it's a flatter angle, more appealing angle,
you know, as far away from the action. And you know,
down between the hedges and there's the open end of
one end zone where people gather on the bridge there
and look in and I just think that's kind of
a quintessential college football atmosphere, and so that's probably my

(20:34):
favorite spot in football.

Speaker 1 (20:36):
You usually have the best seat in the house for basketball,
like you said, your court side at the Garden and
all these historic places. But I was with you in
Detroit when you were sitting up in the skyboxes trying
to call the Kentucky Michigan State game in the Silver Dome.

Speaker 3 (20:51):
That was the trial run for the way the Final
four is set up now where they put the court
out in the middle of the football feet what would
be the football field, instead of up against one side,
so they can use all the seats because they can
sell all the seats. And so that was the test run,
and it was Kentucky and Michigan State. And they put
the court at mid where where they would basically do

(21:12):
the coin toss, a ninety four foot court at the midfield,
and then they had Now you know when you go
to a Final four, there's risers and the floors. I
think that floor was was elevated. It was, but the
seats are elevated and there's risers there. It looked like
the world's largest wedding reception because they were all just

(21:33):
white chairs on the football field. And so if you
were like two rows off the you know, you were
in the third row or something. You couldn't see. But
for us, we were in the football press box. So
Jim Nance and Billy Packer were the only broadcasters at courtside,
so the rest of us were we were in the
football press box and It's the only basketball game I've

(21:54):
called through binocular to see the binoculars or the monitor,
and I didn't trust the monitor in terms of would
be synced up and would stay and sync. So I
called the basketball game through the binoculars. And the best
explanation I've always been able to come up with is
Shigari Eleen and Cliff Hawkins look like the same guy

(22:15):
and sixty one.

Speaker 1 (22:16):
We got it. One more time for one more caller
standing who we got?

Speaker 2 (22:18):
All right, let's go to Tony.

Speaker 1 (22:20):
Tony, go ahead, Tony.

Speaker 12 (22:22):
Hey, guys, thanks for having me on long time.

Speaker 5 (22:25):
First time.

Speaker 12 (22:27):
Hey yeah, hey, tom My.

Speaker 1 (22:30):
Dad taught me years ago.

Speaker 12 (22:31):
I'm sixty five and so you're my my third play
by play caller in Kentucky basketball. I grew up listening
to Kwood most of the time on radio. But then
dad dad, when when they were fortunate to be on TV,
he turned the TV volume down and turned up Kwood.
And that's how I grew up listening to UH to basketball,

(22:52):
and I still do it to this day.

Speaker 5 (22:53):
May I tell you listen, listen on my phone.

Speaker 1 (22:56):
We got to go. I'm sorry, we were up against break.
I'm sorry, man, Thank you very much in. I appreciate it.
Tom Man, thank you for coming in. This has been
a lot of fun. Yeah, we need to hear these
stories because I know your life gets busy once football starts.
So thanks for coming to spending time with his Ah.

Speaker 3 (23:09):
Close and I have a little more earth winding fire
there go.

Speaker 1 (23:12):
Thank you, sh Tom boysch the Wildcats. We'll be back
and wrap it up here on Kadaking Sports Radio. TJ

fun having Tom Leach in here with us. We're going
to keep him for two segments, kept him for an hour,
of course, but I feel like it was like with
like with Jerry Tipton, we could talk for four hours,
tell stories. Didn't even really get into a lot of
the things I think people want to know about, like
the behind the scenes stuff you were talking.

Speaker 5 (24:13):
Of course, I think he also just like uh song
request for Shannon.

Speaker 1 (24:16):
I think he really did enjoying the music.

Speaker 5 (24:18):
There's a lot of times in this job I don't
feel worthy, but looking over at Tom Leach in a
headset and I also have on a headset that I
just feel like I shouldn't be here.

Speaker 11 (24:27):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (24:27):
We do want to touch on a couple other things
we haven't able to you yet. The uh couple of
Kentucky guys make their debut in the NBA tonight. What
Rob Dillingham plays against Antonio Reeves? Right, they play against
each other?

Speaker 5 (24:38):
Yeah, and right after that on the same court, uh,
Reed Shepherd debuts against Brownie's Lakers.

Speaker 1 (24:44):
Oh, I didn't realize that against the Lakers.

Speaker 5 (24:46):
Yeah. If there's ever you know, Summer League. It goes
on a while. There's been games that at the Utah
Summer League earlier this week. But uh, if there's ever
a night to tune in the debut debut of Reid,
Rob and Reeves all into doubleheader. As you said, Rob
Reeves going to against each other. I have been on
the DraftKings app. I think it's crazy to the bet
Summer League, but I mean it's that crazy.

Speaker 1 (25:08):
But there's an interest now with these guys.

Speaker 5 (25:10):
So I'm putting together a little You think Rob's gonna
get twenty? We got prop bets. I've missed my reading
Rob prop bets haven't did it all year with the
basketball season.

Speaker 1 (25:17):
Yeah, twenty points in his first game.

Speaker 5 (25:21):
I'm stretching the odds a little bit. They have fifteen
as an option, but I'm believing. I'm thinking twenty.

Speaker 1 (25:26):
It's taking twenty for Robbiny's first game.

Speaker 5 (25:28):
Yes, Reid is the one that I'm struggling with, like
we're doing overs not unders. Yes, we think Reid's gonna score.
We think he's gonna dish. Is he gonna be shooting threes, steals?
He can do a little bit of everything. What kind
of performance do we expect from Reid, and I'll put
it with Rob's twenty.

Speaker 1 (25:43):
Knowing him and the type of player he is, I
would think he'd be more wanting to kind of just
fit in, be a facilitator. I would probably add all
those say he would go over and assists. I don't
even know what the number is, but I think that's
what if you're asking me, that's what I would say.

Speaker 5 (25:57):
Uh forces six four six, six much better odds. So confident,
aren't you?

Speaker 1 (26:04):
I'm very confident at four six? So so what about you? Shannon?

Speaker 2 (26:08):
Yeah, he can get six.

Speaker 1 (26:09):
I agree with you.

Speaker 2 (26:10):
I think he's just gonna try to fit into this
first game, probably won't shoot the ball a whole lot.
Looking to distribute more. I would say, I would say
six assists, go with that.

Speaker 5 (26:19):
Two steals. Yeah, you know all these guys they haven't
played against Reed yet. They might just be looking at him.
I'm not paying a little attention here and there. Next thing,
you know, Reid's going the other way.

Speaker 1 (26:28):
That's true.

Speaker 5 (26:28):
So what make the final call? I'm on Rob, twenty points?
Are you going assists?

Speaker 1 (26:32):
I'm going over four assists? Over four assists?

Speaker 5 (26:34):
All right? You can find that on the DraftKings, Sportsbook Gap,
the Crown is yours, you'd promo code ks. Sorry, get
that bonus we've been telling you about. I'm excited about
those games, though.

Speaker 1 (26:43):
I am too, I really, Shannon, I talk about this
on the pre show. I'm not really a guy who's
gonna sit and watch summer League games, but I want
to see these guys, those three guys, and just see
how they.

Speaker 5 (26:50):
Perform, how they do especially, I mean, I'm excited for
Reid or Reeves, also for New Orleans tonight. But Rob
and reed are kind of the future, you know, being
lottery picks for those franchises, and like the Twitter accounts
for the Rockets and Wolves today are already hyping it
up their debuts. So it'll be a good night to
watch watch some basketball.

Speaker 1 (27:08):
So Rob and Reeves maybe guarding each other actually tonight.

Speaker 5 (27:12):
Could be We'll see how it plans out. There's like
eight or excuse me, eleven total Wildcats playing throughout summer league.
I think Oscar's got a game tonight, justin Edwards, Trede,
Mitchell stuff, there some other former Cats. Be a busy
time now the Vegas Summer League starts.

Speaker 1 (27:26):
I do want to mention too. How Shannon the dude,
even though he had this little bitty blister on his fingers,
still throughout the first pitch at the River Bats game
last night and didn't throw a strike. But he didn't
bounce it. That's the main thing. He did not bounce
it going in up there.

Speaker 2 (27:44):
Look like a strike to me. I don't know what
you're talking about. I think maybe I should have used
my challenge on that one.

Speaker 5 (27:50):
Oh yeah, I would have swung at it. Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 1 (27:53):
So that was the main thing.

Speaker 2 (27:54):
I didn't bounce it, So I'm happy with it. When
you're gonna go out there and throw it out your
first pitch, right, We did.

Speaker 1 (28:00):
It, Drew and Matt and I did it at the
Legends game maybe five years ago. Anybody all three necessarily strikes,
but we didn't bounce.

Speaker 3 (28:09):
You threw from the.

Speaker 5 (28:10):
Rubber sixty Well, we couldn't. We threw it the same yeah. Yeah,
And one was how do we do it? We weren't
all three on the bag because we threw at the
same time.

Speaker 1 (28:18):
No, we were on each set, one on each side,
and I was in the middle.

Speaker 5 (28:20):
Okay, yeah, there you go. Shannon's last night with that blister,
it kind of reminded me of was it alcs the
Bloody Sock? Yeah? Yeah, I thought I was looking at
Kurt Shilling out there.

Speaker 1 (28:31):
Hall of Famer Shanon dude, and I felt like Kurt
Shilling last night. And we talked a lot about the
TVT tournament coming up at Repperena, the Law Familia, the
Kentucky guys. But they announced some roster news yesterday. Marcus
t Read Travis and Drawn Lamb are not gonna be
able to suit up with La Familia after all, due
to their obligations to their teams. Like Read Travis and

(28:53):
Drawn Lamb, they have their going overseas to play. I
think Marcus t is still playing in that three on
three three Big Three. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (29:00):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (29:00):
They did pick up Brendan Canada to fill one spot.
I think they're making another roster announcement today. Is that right?
Did you hear that?

Speaker 5 (29:08):
I don't know about one today, but I will tell
you I was a broken man when Duran Lamb was removed.

Speaker 1 (29:13):
With me.

Speaker 5 (29:14):
I mean, I'm excited about everyone on that list. It's
gonna be great see all of them, but Doran was
the one I was most excited to see. He's been
gone the longest. He's he's the champion. He was the
best player in New Orleans. People forget that in that
game against Kansas. He's been overseas, still playing over there.
So I was just excited to see d Lamb come
back and eat one more time in Reperina. But he
is unable to participate. That one got me.

Speaker 1 (29:36):
He's a guy that doesn't seem to come around very often,
come back very often unless we don't see him. Is
he is he just playing it low when he comes in.

Speaker 5 (29:43):
Back, right? I mean he came back for an alumni
game and didn't participate. That was a bit of an issue. Yeah, way,
but that's been ten years ago. Overslept, didn't He's there's
different different reasons. Oh okay, Yeah, he just wasn't feeling
that day. I guess that's whatever Dron had going on.
That was Doran's business. But he's still playing overseas. I
think that's the reason he's not participating in this. But

(30:03):
I was. I was really excited to see number twenty
in the three goggles back.

Speaker 1 (30:07):
Well, stay tuned. I think they're gonna make a couple
more roster nows with they announced enis Canter's brother earlier
this week and Brendan Canada joining the spots on the
law familiar team. They got a charity scrimmage I think
this weekend and.

Speaker 5 (30:19):
The game's next Friday, Next Friday tonight slash tickets.

Speaker 1 (30:26):
I need to mention a couple of things. Longtime Trinity
football coach and athletic director Coach Lampley had passed away.
He basically started Trinity football. He won I think four
state titles when he was an assistant coach that he

(30:46):
stepped away, came back as head coach, won four more
state titles. I think he's got eight titles to his credit.
Passed away, but Trinity football is what it is because
of coach Lampley, and I think we just needed to
recognize him because he had been suffered dementia I think
in Alzheimer's lately and then passed away just this past week.
So Drew, Trinity football is kind of the dominant force

(31:08):
stateed Kentucky, and it's all really because of him.

Speaker 5 (31:10):
I lived in Saint Matthews in Louisville for about a
year over there by Trinity. It's it's certainly a football
powerhouse in the state. As you said, the five time champion. Yeah,
that's that's crazy. Yeah, certainly legend No.

Speaker 1 (31:21):
Four as an assistant coach, four as a head coach.
He's got eight state towns credit. Yeah, Dennis Samples had
a fifty game winning streak at one point. He's the
guy that hired Bob Batty, who's now won like seventeen
other state titles out there. But just a shout out
to him and Shannon. One more person that passed away.
I know you were kind of sad about Benji Gregory. Yeah,

(31:43):
who was the child on Alf.

Speaker 2 (31:44):
He was a little brian on Alf passed away by
at only forty six.

Speaker 1 (31:49):
But kind of sad what happened. He fell asleep in
his car and died of heat stroke in his car.

Speaker 2 (31:55):
Oh I didn't see that.

Speaker 1 (31:57):
Yes, that's sad. And he's dog were both in the car,
and he had did dinery cars, So I knew that
made you sad. You're such a big olf fan.

Speaker 2 (32:04):
Yeah, I have to go home later and do an
ALF marathon, I guess in honor of BEINGI Gregory.

Speaker 1 (32:10):
So rested peace Ggory and coach Samples. All right. Tiger
Woods was asked to be captain of the Ryder Cup
team United States Ryder Cup team. Quite an honor. You'd
think I would think he would have jumped at the
chance to be the captain of the Ryder Cup team
that he's played on for years and years and years
won championships. And he said, no, Drew, I don't get it.

(32:36):
To help me understand why he didn't want to do that.

Speaker 5 (32:38):
He's a busy man. We need someone that's one hundred
and fifty percent in to fight for America. Tiger. He's
he's opening putt putts and bars and golf simulator bars
in New York with Justin. Yeah, he's a businessman now,
he's got his new clothing brand. He's distracted and always
a legend. But we need someone that can bring America

(32:59):
back to the top of the Ryder Cup and that's
why we went with Keik and Bradley. Have you even
heard of Keegan Bradley? Never heard of him. Let me
tell you why Keigan Bradley was picked. He was kind
of expected to be picked last year. And you know
the show full swing that follows them everywhere. Yeah, it
was like the scene of the whole season, them calling
him and telling him they're not picking him, and they

(33:19):
picked Justin Thomas was one of the ones here in Louisville,
but kind of thought there's a little bit of a
boys club and they went with popularity instead of some
of the guys that were more deserving. We go on,
we lose to the Europeans. It's kind of an issue.
We're breaking up the boys club. We love Justin Thomas.
Nothing against him. Keegan's getting as shot as the captain,
and he's a guy he like, lives and breathes the
Ryder Cup. So even though he's not the name of Tiger,

(33:42):
this is even the other golfers are like, Kegan needs
to be the guy like he all he thinks about
is winning the Ryder Cup.

Speaker 1 (33:48):
So he didn't even get invited to be on the
team last time.

Speaker 5 (33:51):
No, it was a big snub and it was caught
on camera and it was kind of hard to watch.
He's with his wife, they're they're doing the build up,
thinking he's gonna make it, and then Zach Johnson calls
him and says he went with some guys who didn't
have as good of a year and then we go
on to lose and lost it.

Speaker 1 (34:04):
So that's why they come back and make him the captain.
This time around.

Speaker 5 (34:08):
Yes, so it's not Tiger, but it's a guy who
we can trust to lead our country into battle at
Bethpage Black where Matt shot seventy nine Shannon.

Speaker 1 (34:17):
But it's Tiger and it's the Ryder Cup. His dream,
his dream should have been to be the captain, not
Keegan Bradley.

Speaker 2 (34:25):
Yeah, maybe it's more our dream than his, though, you know,
like it seems like we want it more than more
than he does.

Speaker 5 (34:31):
So Tiger's played a lot of golf, been a lot
of Ryder Cups. I think he's just moving on with
his life. Keegan Bradley was on the team in twenty twelve. Ryan,
he got home. We lost in twenty twelve. We got home.
He has a picture he never opened his suitcase that
says Ryder Cup twenty twelve, but sits in his garage
and he says he will never unzip it until he
wins one. I mean, that's the guy we need. It's
twelve years ago, so he thinks about is winning the

(34:53):
Ryder Cup.

Speaker 1 (34:53):
You want that kind of guy on your team for sure,
but for captain, you'd think you'd want Tiger to be
your captain.

Speaker 5 (35:00):
Tiger, I'm telling you he's Tiger. He's he's worried about
Charlie growing up, being on tour. He's got more money
to make. We need someone focused. It's a good pick.

Speaker 1 (35:09):
Eight nine two to two, two weeks haven. We got
one more break, one more second. We got another sponsor.
We got to take check off. Who's going to read
this one?

Speaker 5 (35:16):
I can do it.

Speaker 2 (35:17):
I can tell you about corn Bread Heip. I want
to think first of all Jim Higden from corn Breadhip
and Eric Zipper really, but mostly Jim because he's the
one that actually got the video of my first pitch

All right, We'll be right back. Wrap it up here,
Ryan Drew and Shannon un Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back,
Ryan Drew and Shannon here. Going to wrap it up
on this Friday edition and wrap up the week here
on Kentucky Sports Radio. Big appreciate Tom Leach coming in
and spending some time with us today. A lot of
people sending up now, they all kinds of questions they
wish they had asked Tom.

Speaker 9 (36:28):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (36:29):
We need to get him back just to ask some
of those behind the scenes stories, like what it was
like to work with Billy Gillespie and Cal and Tubby
and some of those, and get to see if he
would tell us some good stories on that on like.

Speaker 5 (36:40):
That sounds like if Shannon'll just keep playing his favorite songs,
he was ready to hang out all day, all day.

Speaker 1 (36:45):
I think you ran them off.

Speaker 5 (36:46):
Yeah, it shouldn't be an issue.

Speaker 1 (36:47):
Who's our sponsor? We got this segment Drew. Who do
we have do up Don Franklin.

Speaker 5 (36:54):
Oh, all right, you should go to Don Franklin Auto
for all your Don Franklin needs. Yes, with twenty seven
lok around the Stag, be sure to check them out.
Our friend Tom Hart found one recently in Corbin. I
think he's uh might even be pursuing that.

Speaker 1 (37:07):
I know he was kind of joking around, but then
he got serious, like he wanted to know a contact
and some people to talk to. So, uh, Don Franklin
may hook up Tom Hart with the car.

Speaker 5 (37:17):
Yeah, Tom's working on that and you should too. At
Don Franklin Auto dot com, they have just about every
vehicle vehicle you can think of, just added Toyota. They've
been a long time sponsored ksrs. To check them out,
Don Franklin Olive dot com.

Speaker 1 (37:29):
Uh, this is on the Avision Glass text machine. Summer
League is a lot of isole ball, so assists may
be low. I still think Reached Shepherd is the kind
of guy. You know, we saw it a lot in
high school where he tries to make other players around
him involved, get them involved, And I think that's probably
the good he'll do here early in his professional career,
you know, they're not gonna cut him. He's the number

(37:51):
three pick in the draft.

Speaker 5 (37:52):
That's it's where Reid can do so much. I don't
know what we're gonna get the best off tonight. I
think Rob's taking a lot of shots, Yeah, I can.
I think Rob has been hungry to be the main
guy for a long time, and I think we're gonna
see a lot of Rob doing him tonight, good or bad,
hoping good. But I of all of them, I think
I'm most excited to see him.

Speaker 1 (38:08):
So did you go with dealing him over twenty.

Speaker 5 (38:12):
I still haven't submitted anything. Yeah, that is certainly the
way I'm leaning. And then read this will be a
KSR parlay, it can be whatever. Yeah, sure as well.
We haven't done that a lot, but we'll have put
it on the app.

Speaker 1 (38:23):
Can't put it on there, all right? A five nine
two two two eighty seven. Who we got chanting?

Speaker 2 (38:27):
Casey, Casey, go ahead, Casey, Hey, good morning, failers.

Speaker 13 (38:32):
I just wanted to call and give you guys some
come up. And because the summer shows are have to
be so hard, Andy and I will talk on the
phone and try to think of things to call and
ask you guys, because there's just nothing going on hardly
besides face off. So I just wanted to tell you
all you're doing an absolutely fantastic job while Big Tael

(38:52):
is gone, and I hope you guys have a great weekend.

Speaker 1 (38:54):
Go care. I think Casey just won our Don Franklin
Call the Day. I don't think there's any dispute that
do you, Drew?

Speaker 5 (39:01):
Uh No, you should go Don Franklin Auto dot com.
They're driven by family, twenty seven locations around the state.
Don Franklina dot com all the day.

Speaker 1 (39:08):
Call the Day from Casey. We appreciate very much. This
is the Avies and last text machine. Thanks for the
shout out about my uncle Dennis Lampley. Five titles as
head coach. It was five as head coach, four as
assistant coach. But get this, he also has a state
title as the head golf coach.

Speaker 3 (39:25):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (39:25):
Coach Lampley is the Trinity Shamrock.

Speaker 5 (39:28):
Absolutely what a legend.

Speaker 3 (39:30):
Not a legend.

Speaker 1 (39:30):
So what else you got going on this weekend? You
got any big plans this weekend?

Speaker 5 (39:34):
I'm driving to Finley, Ohio a little later today.

Speaker 3 (39:37):
Uh huh.

Speaker 5 (39:37):
I will be back Sunday playing Valhalla Sunday with Billy.

Speaker 1 (39:42):
How did they work that out?

Speaker 3 (39:43):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (39:44):
I gotta say that I'm a little nervous. I haven't
sworn a golf club. I don't even I don't even know.
I think last time I played a full eighteen keeping
score has been maybe multiple years, at least a year.

Speaker 1 (39:54):
This is not the course to just break your clubs
out and walk on.

Speaker 5 (39:57):
Well, it's like a dream round, and I want to
give it my best. I'm going out there completely cold,
but I'm very excited a billy arrange that looking forward
to it when I get back from Ohio.

Speaker 1 (40:05):
Shan, what do you got this weekend? You still moving? No?

Speaker 2 (40:08):
Well, I'm just doing the little things now. Now it's like,
you know, hang pictures up on the wall, decorate that
type of thing. So a bunch of nothing other than that.

Speaker 1 (40:16):
What about you? Well, nothing either. But the reason I
ask you guys because I guess starting next week the
college football a sports game comes out, So that's what
everybody's gonna be doing.

Speaker 5 (40:27):
You won't be seeing me. I'll tell you that. That's
what two more KSR show maybe one more one more
ks R showing.

Speaker 2 (40:32):
Me Drew, you would know the answer to this question.
If I buy the new game, do I have to
buy a like the newest system to play the new game?

Speaker 5 (40:41):
You will? You will need a new PS five or
a new Xbox whatever Xbox I can't.

Speaker 2 (40:47):
I have a PS five, I can't do it with
the Xbox three sixty. That's that's two out of eight.

Speaker 5 (40:51):
You're gonna have to setch up Sega geners.

Speaker 1 (40:54):
See I didn't realize that either. So you have to
have the update assistance.

Speaker 2 (40:56):
See that's that's a commitment because it goes from buying
a what seventy five dollars game to now in all
news system which cost I don't know what three four
five hundred dollars something like that. Yeah, now we're talking
about a big commitment to play a video game.

Speaker 5 (41:09):
So it's not any video game. It's a full time job.

Speaker 1 (41:12):
The game Tuesday morning.

Speaker 5 (41:15):
There's there's a countdown thing. It might even be a
little earlier because so you can pay extra to get
it Tuesday or it comes out on Thursday. I overpaid
because I can't wait two days.

Speaker 1 (41:24):
So you want to get it on Tuesday, Yeah.

Speaker 5 (41:25):
Probably won't sleep next week. I've even bought I put
like those lights behind your TV that people have. Yeah,
it kind of goes on the wall. Installed those a
couple of nights and just don't play the game. Oh yeah,
I got a new controller. Might even look into some speakers.

Speaker 1 (41:37):
I'm just coming over to your house.

Speaker 5 (41:39):
I need some good locks on the door. I need
to throw my phone in the river, and I'm ready
to go.

Speaker 1 (41:43):
So now is it just gonna be current current teams
and current players or they're like they'll be old that
can we play with you?

Speaker 5 (41:49):
You have so much to learn, Ryan, We're building a dynasty.
I will be coaching in the year twenty forty, about
a month from now, I will have multiple national championships.
I will be a legend all of that without sleeping, eating,
or leaving one room my home. I'll write abby letters.
But we the people that are playing this game. You
have a full time job starting next week. You have

(42:09):
to recruit, develop your staff can leave. You have to
go out and find a new staff. There is so
much work ahead that we are all about to embrace
on this journey together and start our dynasties.

Speaker 2 (42:19):
We've lost Drewe for the summer.

Speaker 1 (42:21):
That's why this is his last free weekend right here.

Speaker 5 (42:23):
I cannot wait.

Speaker 1 (42:24):
E Sports coming out on Tuesday. All right, we appreciate
everybody who turning in. Next week, we got a couple
of pop up shows. We'll tell you about that, and
Myron Big Myron Metcalf comes back on Monday from the cookout,
from the Cookout, getting the report. Thanks, having a good weekend, everybody.
