Now here's Tom.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Good day, everybody, and welcome into the program, The Leach Report,
presented each day by Bob kent Enterprises. And coming up today,
we're gonna talk a little bit about a basketball game
from Saturday night, want to come back by the Wildcats
and we will talk about it with David Sisk from
Cats Illustrated and with Maggie Davis from BBN Tonight, and

(00:48):
lots of good things to talk about if you're a
Kentucky Wildcat fan. We'll hear a little bit from Coach
Pope throughout the show. So let's get right to it.
Wildcat News of the Day presented by Joseppes of Lexington.
We'll start with the news that came out yesterday about
Kerk Crisa, the number two point guard who was in
the starting role on Saturday because of the ankle injury

(01:08):
for Lamont Butler and Cresa was injured during the game,
and it turns out it is a foot injury that
will require surgery, but it is not considered season ending,
so they're listening him is out indefinitely. It was good
to hear that it's not season ending. I know there
was some thoughts that it could be something more serious

(01:31):
than what it turned out to be. So happy for
Kerr that he'll be able to get back, but for now,
I would I would anticipate Butler being back for Wednesday's
game because he went through He tried to go at
shoot around on game day and just wasn't quite ready.
So with several more days to recover, I would think

(01:53):
he would probably be good to go by Wednesday, if
not certainly by Saturday. So Jackson Robinson, who in quite
capably on Saturday, would be the probably first option as
the backup, and then probably going to see Travis Perry
get more minutes now, so this will be an opportunity
for him. And he played a few minutes on Saturday,

(02:17):
which was good I think for him to get a
taste of playing on that stage in that kind of
tense environment because he had not been in games in
that situation since his high school days, and he handled
himself quite well. I missed the one open shot that
he had, which I don't think will probably happen too
often because he's such a great shooter. But he was out,

(02:41):
didn't do anything, as Goose said, didn't do anything to
negatively impact the team. That's the first thing when you're
in that role. You just want to avoid doing anything
that's a negative, and hopefully you can generate some positives.
So I think that's something he can certainly build off.
That brief outing against the Zags. What a game though,

(03:03):
ninety to eighty nine in overtime. Kentucky was down sixteen
at halftime, so the comeback ties the school record for
the greatest halftime comeback.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
Now.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
They were down thirty one in that epic comeback at
LSU in ninety four the Miracles comeback. However, it got
to thirty one in the second half. It was sixteen
at halftime. There was also the game at Freedom Hall,
the famous Patrick Sparks game where he got fouled and
made three free throws at the end. Kentucky was down

(03:34):
sixteen at halftime of that game. They only scored sixteen
points in the first half in that game. So those
were the two biggest comebacks, and now there's a third
one to go along with it. Gonzaga had a streak
of one hundred and seventy five wins in a row
when leading by ten or more at halftime. If you
were listening on our broadcast Saturday, I mentioned that stat

(03:55):
at halftime because they're up sixteen. It was certainly a
pertinent note to work in at that point. But you know,
when you throw one out like that, you're thinking, well,
this would be quite a feat to bring that streak
to an end, which Kentucky did. Kentucky led I think
saw for a minute and thirty eight seconds in regulation.

(04:19):
There was a little back and forth early where they
traded leads three or four possessions in a row, and
then Gonzaga opened up a little bit of a cushion
and built it to as many as eighteen early in
the second half. Mark Pope joins eight off up as
the only coach is to win their first two games
against AP Top ten opponents. It was the first overtime

(04:43):
win against an AP Top ten team since the ninety
eight team beat Stanford in the Final four, and this
team is taking on the look of the Comeback Cats
with what they did against Duke coming back from ten
down in the second half and then this one. So
maybe the Comeback Cats sequel will turn out as well

(05:04):
as the Top Gun sequel did for Kentucky basketball. And
the thing that was another similarity with the ninety eight team.
They were down seventeen to Duke in the second half
of that Elite eight matchup in Saint Pete and they
caught up very quickly and I think they had four

(05:27):
trips where they hit three pointers and that enabled them
to get back quickly into the game. And this team
had a thirteen oh run early in that second half
that enabled them to get back into the game. So
we'll get to our first guest when we come right back.
It's the Leach Report presented by Bobcat Enterprises. Our opening

(06:34):
Com and coach. That was quite a comeback on Saturday
night for the Wildcats to be sixteen down against a
team that good. What impressed you most about what they did?

Speaker 4 (06:47):
They the fight and they've had that at all three games.

Speaker 5 (06:52):
I've called this season it's kind of like the old
Big eight when you had Nebraska and Oklahoma in it.
They called it the Big two and a little I've
had said that about the season so far. Now it's
been the Big three in little six. They've had the
Big three games against Duke, Clemson, and Gonzaga, and they've
had the Little six in the other games. Really that

(07:15):
they look good when you score a lot of points
and blow a team out, but it doesn't resonate what's
gonna happen. In March in the SEC Tournament, they found out.
Mark Poe found out what he had last week. And
you know, also in the Duke game, and in all
three games, you know, they were behind in the second half.
I know they didn't win at Clempson, but man, they
made them fight to.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
The bitter end when they were behind.

Speaker 5 (07:37):
So this team, yeah, it is talented offensively, They've got
good players, but you know, in the past, you always
didn't trust this team to guard. They didn't guard the
first half, and I'm talking about the last few years.
They guarded in the second half much better, but they
you know, they fought for the entire game and on
the road when it looked like they were really in

(07:59):
a hole. And you know, that's something that no matter
who you play or where you go, that's something that's
gonna travel and carry.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Yeah, I said to Mark when we started the post game,
So this was a game, and really Duke was the
same way where you look at the box score and
it doesn't really tell you how they won. You had
to have watched the game to understand how they won.

Speaker 5 (08:21):
It, right, Yeah, And I agree with that because you
know when I watched I rewatched the game last night,
and it's always looked different than it does live. And
you know in the first half, really the things that
went Gonzaga's way went Kentucky's way. In the second half,

(08:42):
you know, Kentucky missed a lot of shots around the rim,
missed a lot of easy shots. Well, Gonzaga did some
of that in the second half, and I just think,
you know, Kentucky got more fiscal defensively.

Speaker 4 (08:54):
They I think Gonzaga.

Speaker 5 (08:55):
Tightened up a little bit because Kentucky the zone, the
way they defended, gun Zaga didn't make three points shots.
You could see when he went to the zone. You know,
ek had eighteen points in the first half, and you
know he missed two shots around a rim because he

(09:16):
was well defended. They were awkward looking shots. You could
tell when he got the ball in the middle of
the zone he was really tentative. And this was the
team that was free flowing. You know, nim Hard couldn't
get to his right. You know, they did a good
job of that. They made an adjustment there. And you know,
I remember the one possession distinctively. When they gun Zaga

(09:36):
kept getting offensive rebounds, they missed like three three pointers
and one one possession, And I said, you know, you
can see it on TV. They're getting tight, they don't
believe they can make the outside shot, and you know,
Kentucky would go down and convert offensively, and even though
they were down ten or twelve, you felt like they
were right there because they were scoring a lot easier

(09:59):
than you know, then Gonzaga was in the second half.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Let's go to a SoundBite from Mark Pope after the game.
He was asked about the defensive switch to the one
three to one zone there early in the second half.
Here's what he said.

Speaker 6 (10:14):
It's easy to make that decision when you're getting cooked.
So you know, sometimes, I mean, this is really true.
Sometimes you're sitting there in the huddle and you'll be like, well,
why not try it because right now what we're doing
is not working and we're really blessed a veteran guys
where we could change up below.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
So that was Mark Pope after the game, and David,
you can speak to this with your coaching background. I
was talking to one of the assistants after the game
and he said, yeah, they considered going to it in
the Duke game, and they considered going to it in
the Clemson game. And this is my word, not his.
They I guess kind of hit a point of desperation

(10:53):
in this game. But he said the reason they were
hesitant is that it really hadn't looked that good in practice,
because he said, of the reason is Kentucky has so
many three point shooters on the floor at any given
time that they would just you know, uh, carve up
the zone with their shooters, and it never looked good
in practice. Uh, But when they got into this game, uh,

(11:14):
it was, I mean it was really instantaneous. I think
it was. Think about about everybody's been to a beach.
If you're down on that sand that's packed down where
the waves are coming in, and then when you start
walking back up to where you're sitting or walking back
up to where you're staying, and you move into that
sand that's not packed down and that is loose. That's
kind of how it went for Gonzaga's offense when Kentucky

(11:36):
went to the zone.

Speaker 5 (11:37):
Yeah, and it's funny you said that they considered to
go go into it, and that just ran through my mind.
You know, John Caller Perry considered going to the zone
for twelve years and never did so. Mark Poe did
it in one half and it was a good move.
But I think it wasn't just zone, it was the

(11:59):
zone that he went to because that one three one,
and we ran on one three one when I coached
in high school, and that was a big reason. We
didn't want the ball to get to the middle. That
was a big reason we rented. And you think about it,
nim Hard's always bringing the ball up the side, and
the one three one forces you to bring a ball
up the side. That was a big thing that they

(12:21):
were killing Kentucky in the first half was he was
getting to his right hand and getting down hill, so
he brings it up the left side of the floor.
I was I thought it was interesting that they never
bought it up the right. He was always bringing it
up the left side of the floor. And when you've
got one three one zone and you've got the top
guy in the middle there, you don't let him get

(12:42):
to his right hand.

Speaker 4 (12:43):
Then when they went man, they asked him, they forced
him to the.

Speaker 5 (12:46):
Sideline, they took the middle away.

Speaker 4 (12:48):
They kept him on the left side of the floor.

Speaker 5 (12:50):
I thought that was a big thing because it never
let god Zaga's offense get free flowing.

Speaker 4 (12:55):
In the second half.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
A lot of the time it was Oway who was
guarding him too, and that was uh. I thought that
was an understated part of this because a lot of
times that zone started out looking like a one three
one and then kind of morphed into a man to
man and Oway was guarding nim Hard and in the
first half it looked like nim Hard and e k
were just kind of on the same string and one

(13:18):
move concert with the other like a quarterback and you know,
pitching on the option and Kentucky was able to disrupt that.

Speaker 5 (13:24):
You could see them get tentative on TV, and this
really just not they had one good look or they
had the high low for the doc, but you could
really say, you know, not sure what to pass up shots.

Speaker 4 (13:38):
Not that it killed the boom, but and uh, I
think it was interesting too.

Speaker 5 (13:43):
You never knew when they were going to jump out
of zone into man or even if.

Speaker 4 (13:48):
They would do it.

Speaker 3 (13:49):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (13:50):
You know, there were a couple of possessions. The first
one they did, they stayed zoned the whole time. They
might go to man through the first cutter, you know,
and then jump in the man. I didn't realize how
many times watching it live that they let it get
down about ten seconds on shot plots an then gold
Man late in the possession, like a to ten second mark,

(14:11):
so you know.

Speaker 4 (14:12):
They it wasn't like.

Speaker 5 (14:13):
Gonzaga could get any tendencies from mart Pope out of it.

Speaker 2 (14:17):
That's the benefit of having all of these experienced guys.
Even though they haven't played together, they've seen so much
and they can, you know, communicate with each other pretty readily, right.

Speaker 4 (14:28):
Yes, and they did it offensively.

Speaker 5 (14:30):
I mean, how many times did you see both the
big defenders go with let's say Williams or and there.

Speaker 4 (14:38):
Was a post to post passed a car or a car.

Speaker 5 (14:40):
Made a post to post passed a wheel out of
the you know post double. Uh.

Speaker 4 (14:45):
And then you know they started finding each other on
a roll.

Speaker 5 (14:49):
And like you said, they worked in concert together in
the second half really really well. Uh just you know,
like they played together the whole lines and you could
just see the different and comfort and that is quite
a contrast this Kentucky team has not being together and
you look how much more comfortable they were in the
second half than a really good gun Zaga team that

(15:10):
brought everybody back.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
Yeah, they they had six of their top seven guys
maybe from the team that came in and won the
previous year in Lexington, and it's a very good team.
I mean, they destroyed Baylor. You know, they're going to
be a team that's going to be around likely deep
into to March. With all of that experience.

Speaker 5 (15:33):
I'm interested to see if the shooting stays like this
from the outside, because I mean they've got name guards.
I mean they've got guards and every basketball fan in
the country those that are really good. You know, when
they were talking about on television Saturday night that this
has been one of the worst shooting teams that Mark

(15:54):
Pope has had, or that Mark Pope, that Mark feu
Rather has had a Gonzaga and I'm surprised by that.
So I'm figure I'm curious they get out of that
a lot. They were definitely in one, you know, Saturday night,
and if they do get out of that and warm
up and shoot the way his team's usually shoot, there
are going to be a handful of once they do that.

Speaker 2 (16:16):
David, I appreciate the time and we will chat with
you down the road.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
Hey.

Speaker 4 (17:07):
Yeah, I think the.

Speaker 6 (17:08):
Guys have just been like, man, we feel like VbN
is a little bored, and so we just want to
make it super super exciting.

Speaker 4 (17:14):
And they're doing it. Yeah.

Speaker 6 (17:16):
Yeah, late night game people that went to sleep at
high time to be so sad.

Speaker 2 (17:21):
Yes, I'm sure they were. If they woke up and
wrote it off at halftime, which would have been somewhere
around eleven Eastern, and just said the heck with it,
I'll read about it tomorrow, And then they find out
that the Wildcats came back and tied the biggest comeback
at Kentucky basketball history to bea Gonzaga in overtime, and
a big part of the reason was Jackson Robinson and

(17:44):
his play at the point. Here's coach Pope.

Speaker 6 (17:46):
Watching players grow is like the best thing ever. It's
just the best thing ever. It's the best thing about basketball.
And there was a game that I teased Jackson about
all the time last year. We were playing at Oklahoma
and we were playing who you know, we were in
a really good part of the season, but we just
kind of laid an egg that night. And and Jackson
was having to play a lot of point guard for
us at the time, and after one bad play he

(18:11):
was in transition defense I guess the first half, running
right right by me on the bench, and he turned
and yelled in transit is.

Speaker 2 (18:19):
I'm never playing point guard again.

Speaker 6 (18:23):
And my guy a year later is a five assists,
zero turnover. You know, played the point for the last
eight minutes of the game under massive duress and the
full overtime, and I'm telling you he's special.

Speaker 2 (18:36):
He he was special in that game and one for
eight in the first half, ends up with eighteen points
to go with those five assists. He wrote turnovers. Maggie
Davis joins us when we come right back, all the
leak your points bat fans. This holiday seasont Kentucky, you

Joining the holidays with your family and friends, but remember,

(18:57):

Anheuser Busch. We go to the club blowinil dot com
highlight playing ping on Maggie Davis from BBN Tonight lax eighteen.
Surely you did not go to sleep at halftime on
Saturday night?

Speaker 4 (19:12):
Right?

Speaker 7 (19:13):
Goodness gracious, why would I do that? I have seen
so many games over the.

Speaker 3 (19:18):
Years, and no, unfortunately I will never be able to
go to sleep at halftime. No, not in my personality,
not in my DNA, also not in my job description.

Speaker 7 (19:26):
So I was up, I was tweeting, I was writing
the article.

Speaker 3 (19:29):
I didn't make the trip, but certainly locked in and
watch the postgame live, listen to you and Goose and
all of that. I mean, I think I speak for
a good portion of the fan base that say, after
a big win like that, I just want to consume
as much as possible. And so even though I was
back here in Lexington. I wanted to feel like I
was there, so yes, I was certainly awakened, and more

(19:49):
than that, I was listening and watching everything that happened
after the game too.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
Yeah, this had a little bit of a feel for
those wins in a big win in March where it's
exactly like that. You're just looking to see what everybody's
saying nationally, locally, people that you follow, other fans, et cetera.

Speaker 3 (20:07):
Yes, and I love I mean, this is maybe crazy,
but I love going on like Twitter or social media
after a big win like that. And obviously there's good
stuff on Twitter and BBN world all the time, but
there's just some really funny accounts and especially after a
big win, just to see everybody's you know, kind of
serious takes and then the leader it gets.

Speaker 7 (20:24):
I mean we're talking one thirty in the morning Eastern time.
I mean, people are.

Speaker 3 (20:28):
Just getting a little stilly on there. But it was
all in good fun, I thought, and I had a
lot of fun. So got to sleep in on Sunday morning.

Speaker 7 (20:35):
Numbig deal.

Speaker 2 (20:36):
Yeah, when your favorite team loses, Twitter's not the healthiest
place to be or any social media, but it is
just the opposite after a game like this.

Speaker 7 (20:45):
Yes, I'm with you. What time did you have to
stay up until tom I'm sure you had to fly
back late that night.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
Yeah, we got in the air somewhere and after too Eastern.
So we landed when I got my car at the
airport of seven thirty Sunday morning. And I turned to
goose H and Jim Barnhard, our engineer, when we landed,
I said, this has got to be the first time
in a long time that we landed in daylight after
a game.

Speaker 7 (21:12):
Unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (21:13):
We were trying to figure that out, and Jim said,
probably the last time would have been after the National
Championship in twenty twelve, when you fly home early the
next day and they have the celebration and everything, because
you know, but you know, it gets dark early, so
you know, even if it's an afternoon game, when you
get back home, it's dark. So yeah, we uh we
landed in the in the daylight, and uh it uh,

(21:34):
you know, it's it was a crazy week of travel,
and you know it's for an old guy. Those young guys,
I guess just kind of roll with the punches. But
I think it's probably good that they have a couple
of home games, and now they have a long stretch
of where they have four games in like thirty I
want to say, maybe thirty six days, so there'll be
a lot of practice time to kind of hone in on,

(21:58):
you know, where they want to make improvements, and also
to kind of roll with another point guard option for
a while. With Kerk Crisa out indefinitely. I think Lamont
Butler is likely to return this week. But then you
got Jackson Robinson and what a job he did on
Saturday night. He was one for eight in the first half,

(22:18):
came back and finished with eighteen points. Hit a bunch
of key shots down the stretch, and if he didn't
hit the shot, he was maybe involved in getting the
ball to the person who did. He had five assists,
no turnovers. Coach Pope told the story about how it
didn't go so well for Jackson at the point the
last time he played it out at BYU, but he
looked very comfortable on Saturday he did.

Speaker 3 (22:40):
I loved that story from Pope, and anybody who didn't
see all the post games, I should definitely watch it
because it's a classic. What we're learning is a classic
Mark Pope delivery. Of telling a story about Jackson Robinson
when you had to fill it at point guard at
BYU and it just wasn't going well. He also apparently
wasn't enjoying it, and at some point on the court
was just stare at his head coach and said, I

(23:01):
am never playing point guard again, and yet here we are.
And he did, like you said, Tom, a phenomenal job
in the second half, especially late into overtime, really studying
the ship and being that force that you really expected
him to be coming into the season. It's not necessarily
the player we saw against Duke in stretches maybe, but

(23:21):
not consistently against Clemson, and then, like you mentioned, not
even in the first half against Gonzaga, but when his
team needed him most. I love that we got to
see him step up and step into that role, one
that apparently he hasn't done very much, and it sounded
like maybe he didn't necessarily enjoy very much, at least
not when he was at BYU.

Speaker 7 (23:40):
But it's one that he handled very well. And I
was impressed not only with his shooting.

Speaker 3 (23:45):
I mean, he shot very well later in the game
and some really tough shots, like I'm sure I'm not
the only one who's gone back and watched the highlights
a couple of times. I mean, sometimes you're watching the highlights,
you know it's going to go in, and I'm still like,
oh my.

Speaker 7 (23:58):
Goodness, why is he taking that shot?

Speaker 3 (24:00):
Like the contested sort of off balance jumper was just
an incredible shot and making it in a big moment
I think says a lot about Robinson and what he
can be for this team. We had Goose on our
show last week to preview this matchup, and he was
so emphat at Kentucky needs Jackson Robinson to be consistent,
and we still didn't fully get that over the course

(24:22):
of an entire game. But I like what we saw
down the stretch, and like you mentioned with kerk Crisa
out and definitely you hope to have Lamont Butler back.
I think Kentucky has certainly missed him these last two
games when he hasn't been available. But to have that
Jackson Robinson peace now where you have seen him play
more comfortably. You see the assists no turnovers was huge

(24:42):
as well, a big part of his game I thought
was improving that element as well.

Speaker 7 (24:48):
I'm not worried about it at this point.

Speaker 3 (24:51):
We'll see how kerb you know, if word leaks out
over the next couple of weeks, how he's doing when
he's expected.

Speaker 7 (24:56):
Back, anything like that.

Speaker 3 (24:57):
But the piece of Kentucky has right now, I think
I still feel good about that point guard position.

Speaker 2 (25:02):
I said in our opening segment today too, that it
was good for Travis Perry to get out there, even
for just a couple of minutes, to get a feel
for how much different it is at the times that
he's been playing, and to go up against that caliber competition.
I thought he did just fine in that short stint,
and you know, I think there's a chance he could

(25:22):
get a little bit of run during this time that
creases out absolutely.

Speaker 3 (25:27):
I think you made a great point too about the
practice schedule over these next couple of weeks. You look
at the December schedule, it is vastly different from the
November schedule, and it's vastly different from the January schedule.
So you never want something like this to happen. But
if it has to, this is the time that this
team will get to spend so much time together and
so much time specifically practicing.

Speaker 7 (25:48):
I mean this week, yes, they will have a.

Speaker 3 (25:50):
Weekday game with Colgate coming to up Arena Wednesday night.

Speaker 7 (25:53):
But then we get into a stretcher on the holidays.

Speaker 3 (25:55):
Christmas break in college is such a longer period of time.
They don't have those double games during that stretch. Obviously,
we always had Camp cal back in the day. I
don't know what coach Pope is gonna call it yet,
but I would assume once there are no classes that
there'll be some sort of two a day, three a
day system lined up for these guys to really take
advantage of their time around the holidays too.

Speaker 7 (26:17):
So that should help this team, you know, in a
lot of areas.

Speaker 3 (26:20):
I think we saw some majored in a win, but
we saw some major defensive issues in the first half,
specifically against Gonzaga.

Speaker 7 (26:27):
So giving them more time.

Speaker 3 (26:28):
To work on that will be just as important as
continuing to develop the offense.

Speaker 2 (26:34):
Travis now is in a position where he kind of
like a quarterback that maybe is heaving for Cutter Bowley
at one point where you go from getting the number
three guy reps to getting the number two rips, so
you get more of them in a practice, you know,
they there are drills that take place over the course
of a two hour practice. Everybody's in those, but there
are times when you are scrimmaging or you're running through

(26:56):
the offense with your first group of five and with
your second group of five, And Travis now will be
in that second group when they're running through the offense
or when they're scrimmaging, and he'll be going up against
Lamont Butler a lot more than he has been and
so that will help him get better in this next month.

Speaker 7 (27:18):
Yeah, that's a great point. I'm glad you brought that up.
Interesting comparison with Cutter Bollie as well, and it just
reminds me of what we heard Pope say.

Speaker 3 (27:25):
Early in the year when Perry was getting a little
run here and there in the games.

Speaker 7 (27:29):
But sort of, you know, fans always want to know
where is he, why is he playing? Could we see
him in this role or that role?

Speaker 3 (27:34):
And Pope was asked about it after one of those
early non conference games and just said, it's very hard
to play.

Speaker 7 (27:41):
This system as a freshman.

Speaker 3 (27:42):
It is very hard to be a point guard in
this system. So combine the two and it is just
a very tall task. We're asking Travis to do a
lot and when I'm having him play point guard in
my system, I'm putting.

Speaker 7 (27:53):
A lot on his plate.

Speaker 3 (27:55):
He's handling it as well as anybody can possibly handle it.
There's just a lot to learn, and I think, going
back to your point about getting those additional reps on
most likely that two team going up against Lamont Butler
day in and day out, that will have a major
impact of just getting to practice what he has been
for all intents and purposes, studying for six months or

(28:18):
so at this point, and just trying to get comfortable
in a very unique system. And it's not just on offense,
but you think about how this offense runs, that's a
very interesting position to put a point guard in, with
the amount of shots Pope wants them to take, the
speed he wants them to play, the defenses we saw
down the stretch against Gonzaga.

Speaker 7 (28:37):
I think he called it.

Speaker 3 (28:38):
The Morphing zone, and we saw a little shout out
to coach Jobe halland there with the one three one
late as well.

Speaker 7 (28:44):
And there's just a lot to know.

Speaker 3 (28:46):
And it's not always something that a high school basketball
player has a ton of experience with coming in. You
get to the college game and you add so many
new wrinkles and then you're going up against these guys
that have been playing college basketball for three, four or
five years.

Speaker 7 (29:00):
Well, there's just a lot to do and a lot
to learn.

Speaker 3 (29:02):
So I definitely think this will be a valuable time
for TRIVI. It's not only for this year, but just
to get comfortable for the future as well.

Speaker 2 (29:09):
Talk with Maggie Davis from BBN tonight and Laxa teen.
She joins us on the Club blueil dot com hotline.
Club Blues the official collective partner of UK Athletics and
they are helping boost the NIL funds to get the
talent that it takes to win in the SEC in
all sports. They work with every sport on campus and

(29:30):
right now they are also working with Bespoken Spirits on
a couple of new bourbons and part of the proceeds
from the sales of those bourbons we'll go to Club
Blue in the NIL efforts at UK. One of them
is Club Blue Team White Label. It's a high ride
barrel aged bourbon whiskey finished with twice toasted oak staves.

(29:50):
And then the other one is Club Blue Select Blue Label,
a small batch Kentucky straight high rye barrel aged bourbon
whiskey finished with ex Tequila Oak and Cherry w it Stays.
You can find them at Liquor Barn. You can go
online to Club Blueenil dot com. You'll get them and
select bars and restaurants, and then wider distribution is coming
in January, so check that out. And it's Club Blue

(30:12):
nil dot com where you can find out more. And
Maggie Davis will continue our visit with her when we
come right back here on the Leacher Report presented by
Bob Kat Enterprises. The biggest difference was being able to
be physical, hit first, rebound, and we did that really

(30:35):
well in the second half and that allow us to
get back in the game.

Speaker 4 (30:37):
So super proud of these guys.

Speaker 2 (30:40):
Is Andrew Carr after the game on Saturday Night out
in Seattle, Kentucky beating Gonzaga in overtime ninety to eighty nine,
and we are chatting about the game with Maggie Davis
from BBN Tonight l e X eighteen and Maggie. Andrew
Carr has played maybe his two best games against the
two toughest foes Kentucky has faced, i think, in Duke

(31:03):
and Gonzaga, so he is certainly rising.

Speaker 3 (31:05):
To the occasion yes, and that's what we've come to
expect from him, which maybe isn't super fair.

Speaker 7 (31:12):
You have to expect him to be his best in
the biggest games.

Speaker 3 (31:15):
But at the same time, that is what you expect
from a guy who comes in with so much experience
like Andrew Carr does. The amount of years he's been
playing college basketball, yes, but also the way he specifically
fits in the coach Pope's system. And I still am
not sure we've seen him shoot.

Speaker 7 (31:30):
To the degree which I thought he could shoot coming
into the season.

Speaker 3 (31:33):
I don't know if we will see that as SEC
play maybe gets underway, if that changes at all. But
the level of experience he's brought to this team, and
like you said, just sort of that clutch tcene in
some of these big games, especially late.

Speaker 7 (31:46):
Has been huge.

Speaker 3 (31:48):
Would have liked him to make those free throws, have
to be honest, there, would have liked him to make
at least one, maybe of those free throws. But then
the respond by running down the court and sort of
forcing that scramble that ultimately ends the game in overtime
is just as valuable really in the grand scheme of things.
So he is the guy who brings that experience. He's
calm in those big moments. Like I said, make a

(32:09):
couple more free throws would be awesome.

Speaker 7 (32:10):
But other than that, no complaints.

Speaker 3 (32:12):
I think Carr is certainly one of, if not the
leader of this group on and off the court, and
that's as valuable as anything.

Speaker 4 (32:20):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (32:20):
Yeah, the play that he made you the way the
I think of were four seconds left when he missed it,
and uh, the ball ends up in Stromer's hands, which
is you know, you, if you're Kentucky, you'd rather have
him having it the Nimhart and uh he comes up
the court and when he kind of crosses to the
middle to I'm sure get squared up to take a

(32:42):
three to win it, Uh, Andrew knocks the ball away
and then you know, time just expires. So it was
a heads up playing a guy. If you know, your
coach always tells you when you're playing sports, you know, uh,
don't let you know bad play gets you down, don't
let it affect the next play. And you know, Andrew
certainly follow that mantra by staying engaged defensively.

Speaker 3 (33:05):
Yes, absolutely, I think we also have to talk about
Otaga away down there in those final four seconds because
he's the one who came up with the rebounds against
Duke off of that free throw.

Speaker 7 (33:15):
I mean that was huge in that moment.

Speaker 3 (33:17):
He didn't quite get a hand on it this time,
but if you go back and really watch the replay,
I mean, he is just just a fingertipp or two
away from being able to secure that rebound off of
Carr's second free throw, and then you wouldn't have maybe
even had that scramble at the end. Regardless doesn't get it,
like you said, goes into Stromer's hands, he gets it
across mid court, and car is.

Speaker 7 (33:37):
The one who knocks it away.

Speaker 3 (33:38):
But Otaga is the one immediately diving on that court,
diving for that ball, putting his body on the line
and helping those four seconds pass as quickly as possible
without giving any time to sort of.

Speaker 7 (33:51):
Settle back in and chuck up a prayer to end
the game. So big a shout out to Okeega Away
as well, and I think it sort of gets overlooked too,
but what he did.

Speaker 3 (33:59):
Defense in the second half was huge for this team
as well.

Speaker 2 (34:03):
Mark Pope's high school coach, I think it's I think
his first name for Richard coach Belcher at Newport High
School was there at shoot around and at the game
on Saturday, and I was doing a little research for
just some some nuggets and one of them probably will
try to get into a Coach Pope on the radio
show tonight. It's more of a longer formed discussion, but

(34:25):
his high school coach. First of all, the story says,
when Mark Pope arrived at Newport High School, they had
won one game the year before, and by his junior
year they were number one in the state. I'm sure
he would tell you and it would be true. He
wasn't the only reason why. But Coach Belcher said one
thing about observing his protege as a coach over the years.

(34:46):
He said, I've never seen him doubt a shooter. And
you know that is something that you know as the
coach of guys who are you know, counted on to shoot,
do a lot of threes, and some of them are
going in right now. But his answer in our pre
came Saturday, as far as you know, how do you
try to improve it? He said, shoot more so he

(35:08):
gives them confidence, he does, and.

Speaker 7 (35:11):
He gives them that ultimate green light. And we heard
it over and over again.

Speaker 3 (35:14):
Before the season started and it's almost a little hard
to believe when you keep hearing these coaches say how
we want to shoot thirty a game, we want to
shoot thirty five a game. If we miss one, we'll
take another one. But that's really the style of play
that we've seen develop here. And that's what he's talking about.
What he talked about needing this team to trust, not
each other. He says, they have plenty of trust in

(35:35):
each other as teammates. He needs them the trust in
the system and to keep taking the shots that work
for that system. And yes, maybe you've missed a couple
of threes, we need you to take a couple more.

Speaker 7 (35:45):
That's what this team is and it's working right now.
I mean, you've seen it.

Speaker 3 (35:50):
Now in a couple of these big non conference games,
and I'm excited to see how it sort of translates
against a very very strong.

Speaker 7 (35:56):
SEC this season.

Speaker 2 (35:58):
Maggie, thank you much for the time.
