Speaker 1 (00:22):
All right, do we go one hour force today because
the Dodgers have an early start our time in Washington.
Fred Rogan and ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls sitting
in for Rodney today the salty a Adam Auslin, Adam,
we appreciate you hanging out.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Oh we can still call it F and A with
Fred Rogan and Adam Oslin. Here ont Am five seventy.
I like it here, Fred, how.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Are we doing. We're doing well. We're doing well. It
was a busy weekend. It was an interesting weekend. Of course,
this morning something has already happened, and the Dodgers have
gone to the White House to meet the President. Now,
in their last go round, not everybody wanted to go
to the White House, but this time around, Adam everybody went.
The President in about ten minutes talking about egg prices,

(01:02):
things like that, and then he got into the Dodgers,
calling the magnificent, saying they should be back there next year.
What do you think of the Dodgers going to the
White House.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
I thought it was great to see I think it's
an honor. I think it's a tradition. It was good
to see him there. I thought the President might say
some stuff about them beating the New York Yankees more
and that's his team. And he talked about George Steinbrenner
being friends with him and that Dave Roberts would be
able to survive because he's tough enough to handle a
guy like George Steinbrenner. I thought it was great. I
thought it was fun, Fred.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
Yeah, I thought it was good for the Dodgers last
go around that everybody went, not everybody wanted to go
this go around. They understand that. I think it's more
the office than the person in it if they did
not agree with his politics. And it's a great honor.
I mean, it's a thrill. I have never been to
the White House. I've been outside the White House, I

(01:54):
can tell you that, but I've never been inside the
White House. I think it would be pretty cool to go.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Well, I think David Vasse was there, and we'll have
him on a little bit. But I did see Sho
hay Otani in the Oval office with the President.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Show hey Otani.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
I did see him there, Fred, So that was cool
to see. Next to the Declaration of Independence, show hey
O Tani. And yes we have that sound by Forever Now,
which is more than anything we needed.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
Yes, that man was there in the Oval office. Who
was that man again?

Speaker 3 (02:22):
Show hey Otani.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Yes, he really knows how to pronounce his name, and
I think he's proud of it. There Fred, you could
just tell he really gets it out. Show hey o Tani,
like it is.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
That Joe not Joe Exotic.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
No it's not, Show hey Otani.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
That's exactly who it was.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
There you go. But we got David Vasse coming on
just a little bit, and he was there in the
east wing for the presentation.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
Okay, so Davill join us and let's talk some other Dodgers.
Not a great weekend in Philadelphia, to be honest with you. Yeah,
they did as much as they could to give those
games away, and they did defensively. They struggle, they made mistakes.
They were able to pound their way back in, but
had dug themselves too deep in a hole. Blake Snell

(03:08):
on the il. So here you go, Here you go.
What do we three weeks in and we have our
first contestant on the injured list, which, by the way,
does not surprise me, Adam. I've said from the beginning
with Blake Snell, be ready for the second half of
the season. This is kind of a ramp up for him.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
He is a second half pitcher. I saw it last
year with the San Francisco Giants. He was miserable in
the first half. He struggled in spring training. I think
I had an ERA of six through the first half
of the season and then turned it on the last
three months. And the Giants held on to him instead
of trading him and getting something for him, instead of
losing him for nothing to the Dodgers, which I know
with salt in the wound for San Francisco Giants fans.

(03:47):
But you know, Freddie Freeman on the IL and we've
talked about that, and that seems to be more of
just being extra cautious because the Dodgers can afford to be.
Is this that I'm not so sure? Inflammation in his
left shoulder like Look, it's early. The Dodgers have been
able to make it through the World Series playoff run

(04:08):
last season without Kershaw, without Stone, without Glasnow they found
a way. Then it's early in this regular season. I
think they can weather the storm here without him for
some time.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Fred Oh, I agree, But I don't think this is
just a precaution. I think this is he's got a problem.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Give me the panic meter, fred where's it at right?

Speaker 4 (04:28):
Now?

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Come on, no panic meter, because they have so much depth.
But that's the thing that we talk about before the
season started. Oh my god, look at them. Yeah, somebody's
gonna get hurt. Okay, two are now hurt. Freddy's hurt
and so's Blake Snell. Now the depth will be able
to help uncharacteristic for the Dodgers to make the kinds
of mistakes they've made. I will say that they've made

(04:49):
base running errors, they've made defensive errors, they've made mental mistakes,
and that is very uncharacteristic of the Dodgers. Now any
other team in any other city, he'd be sitting here
going what the hell's going on? But we're sitting here
and we're saying, all right, I'll put year it out.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
Yeah, they lost a series. Breaking news. They're not going
one sixty two to Oh Bill Plaski, I'm sorry that
was a little bit early to make that prediction. But
in the way they lost that game yesterday with Tyler
Glasnow in the mound getting frustrated and flustered there, that's
what was interesting to me. You want to talk about
self inflicted wounds. They had eleven walks. Five of those

(05:28):
guys ended up scoring runs. And whatever it was with
glass Now in the cleat cleaner, he couldn't figure it
out once the weather turned against him, and he could
have paused the game, called a time out, had them
go up there, throw a little bit of dry dirt
on the mound, done something. Instead, he just let it
kind of snowball on him and unraveled.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
And that, honestly is unacceptable. That was unacceptable. Yesterday is
a ten year vet.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
This is not a rookie. This is not Roki Sasaki,
who pitched pretty well on Saturday, his best game of
the season, so full are this is somebody that should
know better. It completely got in his head and that's
where the game was lost. After the Vestia giving up
that home run home run to left field by Castianos.
I think we've heard that before. If you know, you know,
but the grand Slam, Tyler Glasnow, Tyler Glasnow cannot let

(06:18):
that happen to him in that situation, especially because now
they've overtaxed the bullpen and they were already supposed to
have a bullpen game this week.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
Fred see and again that's unacceptable. He's a big league
pitcher and he gets paid a lot of money, and
you can't stand out there and go I can't. I
can't do this because it's too money. You can't. You
can't do that. You can't stand out there and go,
my cleats. I just can't figure this out. I'm really
frustrated by this. You can't do that.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
If you need a pickaxe or a spike strip to
clean your cleats, you do whatever it takes. You can't
lose your composure. Grab a couple more rosin bags. I
heard Tim Kate say that on Dodgers Talk last night.
There are ways to mitigate and he couldn't figure it out.
Like the conditions were the same for both teams out there,
I believe, and Christopher Sanchez pitching for Philadelphia, he figured

(07:09):
it out. It wasn't a problem for him. He had
them come up there and had the ground's crew dusted
off and throw some new dirt off there. Like, what's
Ronald Tyler Glais? Now, why couldn't you do it?

Speaker 1 (07:19):
Well? To me watching that, and I hate to use
the term, but he really did. He seemed kind of soft, honestly,
don't you think I mean, come on, come.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
On, Is it because of the hair, Fred? Is it
because the long hair? Is that why you got to
sput it like that?

Speaker 1 (07:34):
Come on on that? But now it's because, come on,
you're a big league pitcher. Arguably on any team you
could be the ace. Maybe on this one you are.
I'm not sure, but I know this. You can't be
out there getting frustrated because the dirt is too money.
You can't. You've got to figure it out. That's why

(07:55):
you get paid what you get paid. That's why you're
in the position you're in. Not to go out. I'm
tapping out here. I can't figure this out. It's just
my cleats and the mud and the weather. And I
don't need this. I don't And that's really what he said.
I don't need this, So I'm done. I mean, when
they went out to get him, I thought, oh my god,

(08:15):
is he hurt. Oh no, he's hurt himself, and that
would not be good. He wasn't hurt at all.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
He imploded, he was rattled. We're not asking him to
be stormed from the X men and control the weather.
Control what you can control out there. They could have
called time out. Mark Pryor at one point went out
there on the mound and try to settle him down.
That didn't work. He walked what the first three guys
of the inning and the third like, there are ways

(08:44):
to get around this, and for them to lose the
series in that way where you still feel like, Okay,
they lost two games, they lost him by two runs.
There's a real situation where they could have swept Philadelphia,
absolutely if they just did a few different things differently.
Don't get caught on the base paths, and that's another
issue a paw as we can get into that and

(09:05):
Tyler glasnow can't melt down like that on the mount.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
Yeah, And don't get caught on the base paths, and
don't make mistakes running the bases. Don't try to steal
second base. Show hey, when you shouldn't be stealing, don't
do that. He went, he thought he had a chance.
After the game, Dave Roberts said, look, if you're gonna go,
you gotta make it. I mean, they gave up three
base runners in one game from base running blunders. You

(09:32):
can't do that and they know that. See And is
it frustrating to watch? Yeah it is. But here's the thing.
These guys know that they know because if you play
that way all year long, no matter how good you are, no,
you're not gonna win anything. And they know that too.
You cannot give the other team outs, you cannot make
mistakes that you know you shouldn't be committing. Now, it's early,

(09:57):
it will all be fine, and really at the end
the day, it's not a big deal. But they are
doing that now, and that's very uncharacteristic of the Dodgers.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
The unforced errors, the self inflicted wounds, and the miscues
that are completely on them is not something you would expect. However,
I will flip it and turn it this way in
a positive for them, Fred. It kind of tells you
that only the Dodgers can beat the Dodgers. Fair We're
not talking about just any team they were playing. The
Philadelphia Phillies should have been in the NLCS last season.

(10:29):
We all thought they would be. They're probably the second
best team in the National League. And it took all
that to go wrong and for the Dodgers to really
do it to themselves for them to win that series
by a combined two runs. That says something about how
talented the Dodgers are.

Speaker 1 (10:46):
Yesterday, they came from way back. They were in such
a hole and they came back. Yeah, they were fine.
And the other game they were behind and they came
up one run short, but the base running blunder in
the eighth inning beat them there. The thing about the
Dodgers is they are fundamentally sound. And even when they
played the Yankees Adam in the World Series, what was

(11:08):
the book? What was the scouting book? Just wait for
the Yankees to make mistakes because it's gonna happen. Yeah,
and we'll take advantage of that. Just wait, you'll see
they're going to make mistakes. They did. The Dodgers won.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Was that a Alex Was that Aaron Judge out there?
I should say in center field yesterday? I mean, what
was happening? It was a comedy of errors.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
How would you explain it?

Speaker 2 (11:34):
A misread off the bat from Bryce Harper to start
the bottom of the seventh right after they took the lead,
right after they battled back down four runs. And that's
another boon for them. I guess they showed fight. They
didn't quit, they didn't give in. But you can't give
up hits like that, not when you're playing for the Dodgers.

(11:55):
Because this season to me Fred last season. You know
what we talked about in the regular season the entire
time was who cares, what are you gonna show us
in the postseason? Well, they did show up in the postseason.
So now the expectations are it's not just about winning,
it's about making history. It's about a chance to be
the best team ever and show that and win one

(12:18):
hundred and twenty games and do what the Seattle Mariners
couldn't when they won one hundred and sixteen but then
lost in the playoffs of the Yankees, Like the Dodgers
had the expectations of doing it all the having the
greatest run in single season Major League Baseball history. So
we're not gonna overanalyze it to death what happened in
that game. No, but you don't want to see a

(12:40):
team beat themselves, not a team this good.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
They so could they have remained undefeated, Yes, they could
have been undefeated as we sit here today if they
had not beaten themselves. And I think your point was
really valid if you look at everything they got beat
by them they lost to themselves. If they don't make
those mistakes, they would have won both games.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
You know what, the Dodgers are dealing with this season.
Speaking of the Yankees, do you remember a certain sin
failed episode where George Costanza was ahead of his time
and teaching them exit v low basically on his swing
and he was showing, uh, Derek Jeter and who else
was out there with them?

Speaker 1 (13:21):
He was? He not and he was in the batting cage.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
Well, he clowned them, and then they said, what are
you talking about? We just won the World Series and
Costanza goes in six games. That is the standard for
this Dodgers team, not just to win, but to completely
dominate all season long. That's what people are holding them to.

(13:46):
So they lose a series, it's newsworthy, it's unexpected. But
again they lost it by two runs. Two runs they
were short of. Both teams scored twelve runs in the series.
If this is the second best team in the National League,
in the Philadelphia Phillies, I mean, it's gonna be interesting.
And they don't see each other I think till September
back at Dodger Stadium. That was their last game in

(14:08):
Philadelphia until they meet in the playoffs. Should that happen,
so maybe a sign of things to come. It's a
good matchup, but again, the Dodgers beat the Dodgers. Philly
didn't yesterday.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
Yeah, I have to tell you if in fact, Philadelphia
is the second best team in the National League, and
we saw what happened against the Phillies this go round.
The Dodgers are better. You're right, there's nothing to be
concerned about because they beat themselves and this afternoon, whether
they're permitting and right now, it's okay. I saw possibility
of from rain earlier. But David Bassel joined us next

(14:41):
from Washington, and we'll find out exactly what the situation
is there. Fifty years at full speed, The Eck You're
a Grand Prix of Long Beat celebrates its fiftieth anniversary
this weekend. Tickets at GPLB dot com. David Vassa is everywhere.

(15:03):
I think I saw a promo for backstage Dodgers, and
the Dodgers were at sumo wrestling in Tokyo and David
vass is standing there. McCain, you're watching sumo wrestling. So
David Vassy was also at the White House today and
he'll join us next. All right, on this very brief

(15:42):
one hour shows that Dodgers have an early start in
Washington our time. Adam Austin is sitting in for Rodney,
and now let us bring on David Vassa, who was
at the White House this morning. He is our world
traveler and our rock on tour. And Dave, what was
your experience like at the White House?

Speaker 4 (16:01):
Hey Fred, Hey Adam. Yeah, I'm at Nationals Park now
in Washington, DC and phase two of the day is
starting for the Dodgers as they get ready for this game.
The White House experience was interesting. First time I've ever
been behind the gates there. I've seen it from afar,
but it was a great experience to just see how

(16:21):
the real reporters that are reporting on real life, how
their day to day function goes. And it was a
big day there, not only the Dodgers being there, but
later this afternoon Benjamin nedin Yahoo and as I was
leaving the White House, he was expected to arrive. So
it was just interesting to see the briefing room just

(16:43):
how the functionality of the working press happens on a
day to day basis. At the White House, Hey, Dave.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
I remember in twenty nineteen when the Clemson football team
came there after winning the national championship. There was quite
the food spread. I mean, Burger's from McDonald's, from Wendy's
was like a thousand burghers and Trump took that photo
in front of it. Did you guys have anything like that?

Speaker 4 (17:04):
Come on, I didn't see anything like that, Adam. I
wasn't even part of the Dodger group. I was part
of the media corps. And don't be asking me clown questions.

Speaker 2 (17:14):
Look, just because you're there and Bryce Harper, you don't
need to reference him right now?

Speaker 4 (17:19):
My goodness, Well that was a clown question, Adam.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
Look it was a legendary photo. Okay, all we got
was Trump saying show hail toddy.

Speaker 4 (17:27):
About you guys want what else do you guys want to.

Speaker 2 (17:30):
Know Blake's Now, what's the level of concern with this
injury going on right now? Because it seemed like when
it came to Freddie Freeman Vesse that seemed to be
just overly cautious. Is this that or is this more serious? Now?

Speaker 4 (17:43):
I think Blake has been actually dealing with just a
little tightness in his left shoulder the last couple of weeks,
and he was going out there to throw his bullpen
session yesterday in Philadelphia and he cut it short. And
that's where you know, basically, the Dodgers decided not to
let this go any further. Let's just play it safest
early in the season, and the chances of our Blake's

(18:04):
newill miss his next two starts, which means the Dodgers
need a starter tomorrow and they are going to give
Yamamoto and the rest of the rotation an extra day
of rest. So, you know, the riches the Dodgers have
is not only on their twenty six man roster, but
it's on their forty man roster. If you look at
their starting staff in Oklahoma City, it's good enough to

(18:27):
start for a lot of Major League teams, including this
one here the Nationals. So whether it's Landon Nak or
Justin Robleski or Bobby Miller, the Dodgers are going to
be just fine with the pitching depth they have.

Speaker 1 (18:41):
Dave in Philadelphia, I'm characteristic some mistakes, some physical mistakes,
some mental mistakes, and that's really not what we see
from the Dodgers a lot of the time. What was
going on.

Speaker 4 (18:53):
Well, it's a small sample size, but the first eleven
games has shown us the Dodgers need to clean it
up running wise, and they also need to clean up
their defense that's been problematic, and their offense has overcome
it in a few of these wins, but they weren't
able to overcome it two times in Philadelphia, and the

(19:14):
meltdown Tyler Glass Now had in the third inning was
hard to overcome when he opened the floodgates for a
six run third inning. So all those things worked against
the Dodgers yesterday.

Speaker 2 (19:25):
Dave, what's kind of the protocol with that situation? Could
he have called up the grounds crew to throw some
dry dirt up there? Could somebody else have done it
for him? Could Dave Roberts have said, Hey, you need
help right now, We're going to get it for you.

Speaker 4 (19:38):
Yeah. I believe there's a rule where they could have
asked for that, But I mean, there's really no excuse.
I mean, Christopher Sanchez was dealing with some of the
same conditions and he didn't freak out and all of
a sudden lose his concentration and his focus. Glass Now
said he did as much after the game. He did
not shy away from the fact that he le the

(20:00):
elements affect his focus and his pitching, and that's something
that just can't happen at this point in time of
his career, and certainly you know it's early. It's one start.
Hopefully he gets better from it. But that's something a
lot of people in the press box had never seen
out there in Philadelphia, just a pitcher completely allow the

(20:23):
elements to get in his head and effect his pitching.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
Did Andy Pa has own it his missque in the
outfield with that misread off the bat of Bryce Harper,
and then the base running blunders have been going on.

Speaker 1 (20:35):
Well.

Speaker 4 (20:36):
Number one, the ball was said one hundred and seven
miles an hour off of Harper's bat. It's not an
easy play, but yeah, he was turned around two or
three times there. And he's playing out a position I
believe many people feel to appreciate that that don't watch
the Dodgers on an everyday basis. He's a corner outfielder
and the Dodgers are asking him to play a position

(20:58):
that he's not really comfortable at. So it's a work
in progress. And I know everybody's talking about Heyesung Kim
in Oklahoma City. Yeah, his defense is elite. And if
the Dodgers feel like Pojez is not getting better, they
might decide to give Poez a breather in the minor
league and call up a hot Kim. But I have

(21:20):
gotten no indication that's happening today.

Speaker 1 (21:22):
Day final question before we let you go. I saw
a promo for Backstage Dodgers. Dodgers were at the Sumo
Barn for sumo wrestling, and you're standing in the background.
What did you think of the sumo wrestling training.

Speaker 4 (21:36):
Yeah, that was not in Philadelphia. That was in Tokyo.

Speaker 1 (21:39):
Yeah what did I say Philadelphia?

Speaker 4 (21:42):
Yeah you didn't. You didn't really distinguish where I was.

Speaker 1 (21:45):
But yeah, that was Tokyo.

Speaker 4 (21:49):
But yeah, that was the first day we were in Tokyo.
Myself and about seven or eight other Dodgers, including Clayton Kershaw,
went to U a sumo exhibition and yeah, those guys
are incredible athletes. I don't believe we appreciate how good
of an athlete they are. And Kershaw tried to move
a sumo wrestler and he said, once that sumo wrestler

(22:12):
actually tried, he wasn't able to move him.

Speaker 1 (22:16):
No, I have to tell you I've been to sumo
before when I did it for NBC Sports with Lyle Alzado.
When those guys get set, you better know what you're
doing because you're not moving them, and they can just
pick you up and throw you out of the ring.

Speaker 4 (22:27):
So they're like, we're not a doubt shot. A lot
of lower half strength there, so you know, it's not
me trying to move them. It's a professional athlete. So yeah,
it was. It was pretty impressive for it. It was a
cool experience. That was a great experience too. I mean,
I'm just really lucky to be covering a team like
the Dodgers from Sydney to Korea, to Mexico City to Tokyo,

(22:52):
Japan and now to the White House. Just a really
special time to be part of this ride.

Speaker 1 (22:58):
Hey, do they know where they're going next year yet?
I know it's very early. Just popped into my mind.

Speaker 4 (23:03):
They're not going anywhere, Fred, You're not going to The
Collective Bargaining Agreement kind of restricts how many times a
team can go part of these world tour series, So
it would have to be after the new Collective Bargain
Agreement for the Dodgers to go overseas again to play
a game or go international to play a series.

Speaker 1 (23:25):
All right, how's the weather in Washington? I heard it
might ring.

Speaker 4 (23:29):
You heard right, Fred. It rained this morning. I was
standing in the rain trying to get into the White
House and also raining right now. But it's supposed to
stop about two hours before first pitch, so I think
we'll be into clear for the game.

Speaker 2 (23:44):
Glasow's our pitchers today.

Speaker 1 (23:46):
Huh yeah, good things all right, Dave, Thanks for jumping on.

Speaker 4 (23:50):
Appreciate it all right, See you guys love it.

Speaker 1 (23:53):
David Vans in Washington with the Dodgers Okay Lakers yesterday.
How important was that went against OKAC It's.

Speaker 2 (24:00):
Their best winner of the season, Fred, and they've had
a few notable signature wins as of late. First of all,
in February, they got that big victory in Denver, a
team I don't think they had beaten the last twelve
times they faced them, something like that. JJ Reddick said
he hadn't slept for three or four days before that game,
just game planning and trying to make sure their defense

(24:21):
was locked in. Then they get the victory over Houston recently,
and now this in Okasee and the Oklahoma City Thunder
hadn't lost two games in a row all season long,
and this was their biggest loss, I think, losing by
twenty seven to the Lakers. That's not nothing. And as
you know, I have said to you and Rodney before,
I actually think the Lakers match up well against them,

(24:42):
and it looked that way. Remember Luka Doncic beat them
in the second round last season of the playoffs when
he was with Dallas, and he has been able to
own lou Dort, who might be the defensive player of
the year. And they have a historically great defense the
Oklahoma City Thunder, but yesterday it was the Lakers who
put the clamps on them. It was incredible how well

(25:03):
they played defensively. And that's really the difference, because Fred,
there was a time for two months, two straight months,
from January fifteenth to March fifteenth, the Lakers actually had
the best defensive rating in the NBA. They were dominant,
and that was with Ad without a d without Luca.
With Luca, it didn't matter. They were figuring things out.

(25:23):
But then the last fifteen games they were like twenty first.
But yesterday that great defense for two months returned. I
think that was the biggest thing for them.

Speaker 1 (25:32):
Yeah, and as you mentioned, Luca played very well. I'm
wondering at this point in the season, though, is that an.
I don't know if there's a statement game a message game,
but at this point in the season, now we're getting
closer to the playoffs, so we're going to figure out
how this is all going to shake out. I think
if I'm the Lakers, if they hadn't beat Okac. Ever,

(25:52):
if you're going to beat them one time, that was
the game to beat them, and that was the way
to beat them, because now they know this is not
going to be any pushover. And I think in the
back of the Thunder's mind, the thunder mind, they have
to think, geez, maybe these guys are pretty good.

Speaker 2 (26:06):
Well, okay, see, we have to remember they're still young.
They might win sixty eight games this season, but they're
still young. They might have the MVP, and they will
have the MVP and shake Gilders Alexander I believe he'll
win it over Jokic, but they don't have the experience. Now.
It may not matter because they're so talented with all
these young guys, and they brought in Isaiah Hartenstein and

(26:27):
Chad is healthy now and things were coming together. But
to lose that badly to a team they could see
in a second round matchup or the Western Conference Finals.
It's not nothing. And for the Lakers, that's all the
confidence you need. Oh, we can beat the best team
in the league. We had no problem with them. We
ran them over in won one twenty six to ninety nine,

(26:50):
and we got their kryptonite and Luka Doncics who just
beat them in the playoffs last season. And Luca by
the way, you know, shooting wise, he hasn't been in
his best so far with the Lakers. There have been
some issues where people are like, maybe Nico was right. Okay,
that's still crazy talk. He wasn't right, But yesterday that
was his most impactful game as a Laker scoring wise.

(27:10):
That's when it mattered most, and he looked like the
best version of himself.

Speaker 1 (27:14):
As for the Clippers, they have been hot of Lake two.
They're more roup than down. And now we march toward
the playoffs. What do you think the Clippers will end
it up? End up in the seating.

Speaker 2 (27:22):
Ooh, four games left red. It is a jumbled up
mess like we've never seen before in the Western Conference.
And that is saying something because it's been stacked for
twenty five years. I think, Okay, if they win their
last four, they'll be out of the play in. That's
a fact. They'll be at least sixth, and then depending
on what happens with Minnesota, with Denver, with the Lakers,

(27:43):
although I'm not counting on them losing all four of
their games, they could move up into the five spot.
Maybe Denver is reeling right now. They got injuries, Jamal
Murray's been out, They've been losing a ton, and the
vibes are bad there, so they could fall back. The
Clippers have a chance. I think at best they could
be the five if things really broke their way, the four,
but most likely sixth or seventh. A lot's going to depend.

(28:06):
Here's what's crazy, Fred. They're up in Golden State the
final game of the regular season. Golden State's right there
with them. They have the exact same record. The Clippers
have the tiebreaker over them, but they play one more time.
That could determine who is playing the Lakers in the
first round. Who are likely to be the three seed,
which means that team winning that game is the sixth
seed and they match up in the three to six,

(28:27):
or who falls into the dreaded play in where nobody
wants to be because it's not single elimination in the
seven to eight playing game, But it still feels like
a crap shoot because any team gets hot in one
game and your season could be over pretty quickly.

Speaker 1 (28:42):
So three to six, let's say Lakers Clippers. I would
have a hard time imagining that Golden State would not
finish ahead of the Clippers. I mean, just with Jimmy
Butler and stuff currying the way they're playing. But let's say,
for arguments sake, the Clippers finish six, the Lakers finish three.
Is that a series? And if so, how much of one?

Speaker 2 (29:03):
It's the Battle of Los Angeles for the first time ever.
These two teams have never matched up in a playoff series.
We thought it was gonna happen back in six. We
thought it was gonna happen in the Bubble in twenty twenty.
First time around, the Lakers blew a three to one lead,
losing to the Suns, or else they would have taken
on the Clippers in six in the second round. And
then it was the Clipper's fault in the Bubble, where
they blew a three one lead to the Denver Nuggets,

(29:24):
or else they would have taken on the Lakers in
the Western Conference Finals in Orlando. I think with the
way the Clippers are playing right now, this would be
a series that goes six or seven. Really, the Clippers
have been that good, not just because they've won fourteen
of seventeen, but you look at the way Kawhi Leonard's
been playing. Fred Your guy, Kawhi is back. Kawhi is

(29:46):
playing at an all NBA Top five type of level
right now. He looks exactly how he did last season
before the knee flared up. There was no structural damage.
He did have a surgery, he did have a cleanup,
but there was no reason why he could get back
to moving the same he did his last season. And
now he's back where he's putting up crazy shooting splits.
The efficiency is there, and all the ratings from the

(30:08):
Clippers defensive rating, offensive rating, net rating, they're behind OKC basically.
Over the last month or so, they've been playing like
one of the best teams in the league. So the
matchups would be interesting because the Clippers know Luca. They
have faced him three times in the playoffs, they've beaten
him twice. They lost to him last season when they
didn't really have Kawhi in that first round series, Agains Dallas,

(30:31):
but Luca and Lebron, well, that would be a different
type of challenge. However, the Lakers never got that big
man Fred. They had that trade rescinded. They lost out
on Mark Williams. What are they going to do with
against Vista Zubats, who was turned into an All Star
type of player the second half of this season. He
has been that good. That's not hyperbole Ifvita Zubats has

(30:53):
been tearing up the league.

Speaker 1 (30:55):
The thing that interests me about the Clippers this year,
and I think I mentioned it to Rodney recently, James Harden.
We haven't heard a peep from James Harden. Wherever James
Harden goes, eventually there's a problem and you hear about it.
I haven't heard one thing from James Harden this year
about there being a problem about him being unhappy. Had

(31:15):
they just done a really good job of putting him
in a position to succeed and be happy.

Speaker 2 (31:19):
Look, he's thirty five now, he's more mature, and you
can make the argument it's not like the last two
places he left are in good shape. They still have issues.
Look at Philadelphia was the underlying problem James Hardener? Maybe
joe El Embiid and bad roster management. Brooklyn had a
complete tear down, and Kyrie Irving was there. There were

(31:39):
tons of issues going on, So I'm not going to
put it all on James Harden. I think there are
real reasons outside of him that things didn't work out,
But he's played at an all star level in the
first forty five games this season. They didn't have Kawhi,
so basically, James Harden went back to playing like Houston
James Harden, where it's just him is the focal point
on offense and him being the system. Everything plays him

(32:04):
system he called himself. He called himself to be fair
a system, not the only system. A system. It's true.
He's a top seventy five player ever, and he can
create for himself and others and run high, pick and
roll like you know as well as John Stockton. He
is an incredible offensive force. He is an offense unto himself,

(32:26):
so he kept him afloat without Kauai on the offensive end. Defensively,
the Clippers had the guys to get done this season.
That's how they ended up in this spot.

Speaker 1 (32:43):
Not often when all time records are eclipsed, when happened.
We'll get into it and uh a little bit about
the Kings tonight at the Crypt next. All right, Adam

(33:13):
in today for Rodney as we wrap things up quickly.
The Kings at home tonight against Seattle. The King's a
huge win over Edmonton over the weekend. Drysidel and McDavid
did not play. Nonetheless, Kings at home and beat the Oilers.
I don't care who is playing for Edmonton. If the
Kings have home I S advantage, I believe they will
beat the Oilers and that gave them a little cushion

(33:36):
a four point lead now heading into the final days
of the NHL season. Also, congratulations to Alex Ovechkin. Hard
to believe, but he has passed Wayne Gretzky.

Speaker 2 (33:45):
Right, I gotta ask you about that. Come on now,
come on now. This was huge news. Not only did
he pass him, he did it in the exact same
number of games played in HISNHL career to this point,
four hundred and eighty seven. That's wild. He and Gretzky
at the same number. Gretzky was there, obviously, it was awesome.

(34:06):
It was kind of like Kareem passing the torch over
to Lebron when he passed him in scoring. But is
this something where the old puckheads are saying, yeah, but yeah,
but are they finding a way to diminish this accomplishment
with Ovechkin the way we see in the NBA all
the time when somebody reaches a scoring mark or a

(34:28):
milestone I.

Speaker 1 (34:29):
Think Gretzky has in hockey history. He will go down
with a much bigger profile than Ovechkin. And Novchkin is
highly respected and has had a hell of a career,
but Gretzky, I think was on a different level. So
I don't think anybody will diminish Ovechkin's record. No, old puckheads,

(34:50):
I don't think that will happen. But I do think
that Wayne Gretzky has his position in NHL history and
no matter what anybody does, he still will be the
great one.

Speaker 2 (34:58):
Well, doesn't he have more assistan and anyone else has
goals and assists combined? Like, yeah, nobody's touching him. But
this was a record that also people said, uh, it's
never gonna be broken, Like.

Speaker 1 (35:07):
I gotta be honest with you, I never thought it'd
be broken. Yeah, So I mean I thought the NBA
scoring record would get broken. Before I thought this would
get broken.

Speaker 2 (35:15):
It's the Kevin Garnett. Anything is possible, like it happened.
Like I follow, You know, I am a hockey casual,
you could say, fred. I like to follow in the
playoffs when things get tight in the conference finals and
the Stanley Cup finals. You know, I was a Sharks
fan up in NorCal a little bit and they always yeah,

(35:37):
well they helped out the Kings a few different times.
You know that they knew how to blow a series.
But this record in Alex Kovecchin's career, He's thirty nine,
and I'm looking at his numbers, like how much longer
can he go? He said he's going to play out
the rest of his contract through next season, but he
is putting up numbers like he's still at his peak

(35:59):
in some ways, Like how what level is he at?
Because I'm thinking about Lebron is still going and we're
talking about how long he can go and do this?
He is still very serviceable? Is Ovechkin like that right
now in hockey?

Speaker 1 (36:13):
Well, I think it just comes down to his health. Honestly,
I mean which game is more physically demanding at forty
years of age? Both are both require a different skill set,
but you could make the argument that hockey would be
more physically demanding.

Speaker 2 (36:26):
Well, especially because they play through everything.

Speaker 1 (36:28):
They play through everything, they get or hit into the boards,
they have to skate. There's a lot going on with hockey.

Speaker 2 (36:33):
I've never heard of load management in hockey. I gotta
be honest, Red.

Speaker 1 (36:36):
It doesn't exist. Yeah, the mentality is different there, but
I think as long as he is physically capable of playing,
he will play, and he believes that he has an
opportunity to contribute. I mean, you don't want to go
out there. I don't think any athlete does. Once to
go out and you're a step too slow, you're a
half second off, and it shows the boxer that doesn't

(36:57):
retire goes in and gets knocked out. You don't want
to be that guy. But if he physically can continue this,
I think you'll go longer if he physically can make it.

Speaker 2 (37:08):
This was far from Emmett Smith falling forward with the
Arizona Cardinals to claim the all time rushing record. Like
Ovechkin is still one of the best players in hockey
and his team's at the top of their division. Right.

Speaker 1 (37:21):
Yeah, they're good this year. They are really good this year.
I mean, Kings beat them here, but they are really
good this year. They're gonna be a problem the playoff
for whoever season.

Speaker 2 (37:32):
I just I'm kind of in awe from afar, even
as a hockey casual self proclaimed, I'm still like, wait
a second, someone passed Gretzky in a record That doesn't
make sense to me. They both played twenty years, they
both played the same amount of games, and in the
same amount of games he got one more goal than
Wayne Gretzky. That's incredible to me. Now you mentioned the

(37:55):
La Kings is a fourth time. Really the charm against Edmonton.

Speaker 1 (37:58):
It'd better be. It has to be, and we'll as
we get closer, we'll start our Edmonton conversations we already have.
But for the Kings, I mean, this is it. I
said it last year. This is it. You cannot go
into the playoffs and get knocked out by Edmonton again
in the first round. I can understand if you're the
conference finals and you lose a couple of years, I mean,

(38:21):
you were so close, but this is unacceptable. First, you
got to make the playoffs. Okay, they've done that, so
that's good for the fans. But now you have to
win a playoff series, and actually you should win two.
But the Kings have played so well at home this
year that I still maintain they could win any playoff series.
But if they have home ice advantage, they should win

(38:43):
every playoff series.

Speaker 2 (38:45):
Well, they're close in the standings with the Oilers obviously
four points. I think, now like how close are they
talent wise? Like how much better are the Kings really?
Because if Edmonton has their number and even if they're
a little less talent, well, did sometimes just have that
mental age means everything?

Speaker 1 (39:03):
Yeah, but I think it's going to be different this year. Look,
they have Conor McDavid, so that is the ultimate game changer.
But you know, I think, and you would never do
this to Wayne Gretzky, you're actually Alex Ovechkin. But to him,
put a body on him, knock him through the glass,
take him out. That's how he plays this, this courtesy
of you know, you don't go after the star, and

(39:24):
if you do, somebody's gonna come over and take care
of you. I don't think it should be extended to
him put a body on him that, because that's what
he does. Guys, that go Vetchkin and Gretzky. They never
went after people, but this guy does. Okay, put a
body on him, make him feel it if you can
catch him. The concern with him is he's so fast
that if you're close to him, you've accomplished something. I mean,

(39:47):
he's really really fast. But see in a couple of weeks.

Speaker 2 (39:51):
Say they lost to him again. You mentioned it can't happen.

Speaker 1 (39:54):
Rob Blake's got to be fired. The general manager heads
would roll. They should have rolled last year, but they
came one more time. Darcy Kemper has proven to be
a great goalie. They dumped that Pierre Luke du Bois
contract and that was an aberration. Somehow they got Washington
to take it and now he's playing well for them.

(40:14):
But Darcy Kemper, who used to be with the Kings,
that he comes back, you think, well, at least I
have a goalie. He's got a hell of a year.
He's had a great year.

Speaker 2 (40:23):
Well, thanks for filling me in. I feel a little
bit more informed. I'm smarter now, Fred, And I'd just
like to say this, First of all, thanks for having
me on here in for Rodney Pete. Second of all,
we have done this entire show with Fred Rogan's camera
flipped to the side like he's Adam West in sixties Batman.

Speaker 1 (40:41):
I can't figure that out. I thought you did something.

Speaker 2 (40:45):
I am so dizzy and disoriented looking at your face
right now.

Speaker 1 (40:48):
More than that, I thought you hit a button. I
didn't do anything. You did, damn straight, you did something.
I hit the same button I always hit.

Speaker 2 (40:55):
Fred the cat went on your keyboard or something. I
don't know what it was.

Speaker 1 (40:59):
Thank you, Thank you, Ronnie, great hour and Adam really
appreciate you. Sitting in Petrow some money your next

Speaker 4 (41:10):
Mm hm
