three docks and on it.

Dial it up another trip o'brooks hat and he's their
leading scorer coming in at twelve points per game.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Kicking right side wi pitch.
Speaker 4 (00:21):
That's Addison leaving at short and a wye pitch. Don't
flying through with a rebound and off the window.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
With a ballow Marsers went up, lots of contact, got
it stripped.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Here comes bond bought in transition for a free a
Carol the Allio slam. That might be your teens Family
Stores highlight of the game.
Speaker 4 (00:39):
Pretty basketball there that's going to force a CC timeout.

(01:05):
kent Wood and Holland MKD Funeral Homes and Meyer.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
Hey.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Welcome in everybody, final week of January. It's a week
four edition of the LMCU Basketball Blitz. As we always say,
time flies when you're having fun. And can you believe
we're less than a month away from the start of
the state tournaments, both boys and girls, and the boys
are first this year, girls to follow, and of course
we'll love the coverage for you. The Road to the
President Center, we call it right here on ninety six
(01:33):
to one. The game brought to you again by MKD
Funeral Homes. Well coming up on the show tonight, Jay,
We're excited to have in the Montel Construction Coaches Corner.
We missed them in action as one of our Game
of the Week broadcast brought to you by lmc. We
tried once, we tried twice. The third time was a charm.
They got the northfewd South Christian game in on Thursday night,
but we couldn't bring it to you due to Red
(01:53):
Wings Hockey Norfew pulls it out at home. Shot at
the Buzzer by who else? Brady Swartz for the Wildcats
and they went it fifty seven to fifty five. But
boy did the stars show up in that one or
what Carson Fiss a career high thirty eight, and then
you also had cam Ryan's went over the thousand point mark.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
He had thirty one in that game of the victory.
Speaker 5 (02:12):
Yeah, that was that game was incredible. This hits the three,
I mean, he was having an unbelievable night. He no,
I don't think he'd missed in the fourth quarter. He
hits the three with eight seconds to go to tie
to fifty five. And cam Ryans was the star of
the show for Northview. He had thirty one in the game.
He'd gone over one thousand for his career, and I mean,
I could think you could make an argument that cam
Ryans as the best player in the area. I mean,
at least an argument he's really good. And then Brady Swartz,
(02:34):
who didn't have his best night, hits the game winning shot,
and that's what you have with Northview.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
And then Swarts turns around and gets forty nine.
Speaker 5 (02:40):
The next or two nights later at Aquinas in a
four overtime game with Limo Ohio.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Well, David Channa, their head coach for the Wildcats going
to join us tonight, and the coaches corner excited to
talk to him. I think you really like the way
that he has gone about this job now in his
sixth season as head coach at Northview. Before that was
at Mota Shores, before that at Kennaway Hills. He is
truly a basketball junkie. We'll ask about that coming up
on the show. Then, of course, we've got our top
ten rankings for the boys and the girls, and we'll
(03:06):
just say this before we dive into it. In the
girls segment, we really have struggled. I mean, if you
can hang on to the spot of either seven, eight, nine,
or ten at the bottom of our girls' rankings, good luck,
because I mean it seems like every week, right, they're
not really upsets, but the teams that are in those positions,
it's like we jinx them because then they lose.
Speaker 5 (03:24):
I think there's a clear cut seven, and then after seven,
it's just kind of like fifteen teams that are all
very similar, and they're all playing each other, and they're
all beating each other.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
So who to put it? Eight, nine, ten. I literally
think you can.
Speaker 5 (03:36):
Make an argument for fifteen different teams, and I think
we're gonna do that.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Yeah, And you know what's gonna mean.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
It's gonna mean for fun districts, fun regionals, because you
won't be able really, even though they've got the seating
this year, all the way through for the districts, you
won't be able to definitely say that, hey you're the
number three seed, you're gonna advance.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
I mean, that's just the way it is in some
of these districts.
Speaker 5 (03:55):
And as we've talked about over and over again, if
Miskegan gets healthy, you throw them in there and then
there'd be a clear eight. But right now, without CC Bonder,
Mariah San the Lady Reds have taken some.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
Mouse on the boys side of things. By the way,
for the top ten range, its it's like a badge
of honor if you can get in the top ten,
because we could probably go twenty deep. I mean, it's
incredible to see, especially in the Okay Conference and beyond.
I mean, teams like Whitehall that you've talked about, you've
had a your top ten. Another big victory for them,
Camp Thompson. They're gonna make up that game with Rockford
right around the corner. So if you want to get
a chance to see him as he comes to the
(04:27):
Grand Rapids area look out for the Vikings. And then
you know Division II North Muskegan still yet to be beaten,
and they've got a makeup even though it's on the
lake shore at their place.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
But with Covenant Christian, who we saw well.
Speaker 5 (04:38):
I love North Mischigan and Adam Dugner, but I don't
have him in my top ten because they just really
haven't played a really good opponent yet.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
And so the Covenant Christian coming up.
Speaker 5 (04:47):
I wish they'd play Whitehall, and I don't know the
dynamics of scheduling that game in a West Michigan Conference
rivers against the West Michigan Conference Lakes and I know
Whitehall has really scheduled up this year. I'd love to
see Whitehall North Michigan play this year. It's not gonna happen,
but U I kind of want to see where North
Mischigon's at. I think that Covenant game on February eight,
they'll be a good barometer.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
All right, you're chomping at the bit. We've been talking
about it off the year, getting ready for this show.
Before we get to David Chan on our next segment.
Let's start with the boys top ten rankings, and Jay,
I'll let you go first.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
Let's go top three first. The way you see it
this week, well, I just don't know real changes.
Speaker 5 (05:17):
I mean, you call you and Buck called the Byron
Center and United Christian game on Tuesday night and UNI
Christian wins and the stats of one eight in a row,
they're fourteen to one. Can you make an argument for
Unie Christian to be in the top three. I think
you can make that argument. But what's unfortunate is Cam
Carroll didn't play on Tuesday night, and we don't know
how long it's gonna be out, but he's gonna be
out for a little bit here as Byron Center hits
(05:38):
a tough stretch. So I did drop Byron Center out
of my top three.
Speaker 6 (05:42):
I did.
Speaker 5 (05:43):
I had them three most of the year again, fully healthy.
Byron Center has lost one game this year and that
was to Rockford in overtime. Right, So I mean, I
think I can't make an argument for Byron Center at two.
But they've taken they had a forfeit loss, They've taken
some losses without Isaac Lee, now without Kim Carroll, with
Autlanta Conrad, So I don't have Byron Center in my
top three. I think you can make an argument to
(06:03):
put you Unie Christian in your top three, but I
can't move Unity Christian. I had Hudsonville because Hudsonville be
uniye Christian. I had to head so Rockford one, Miskegan two,
and I have Northview three. I love the Wildcats. I
just I don't think anybody has the two players as
good as Schwartz and Ryans, so I have Northfield three.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
All right.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
Unity Christian did beat Byron Center Tuesday night in our
Game of the Week brought to you by LMCU forty
six thirty five as Jay Living to Max vancouvery one
of the seniors on that roster for Scott Sodsma. He's
the junk man I like to call him with the garbage man.
He helped lead the way along with Jack Camigan with
twelve points as the high score for Crusaders. He was
our uptown cheapskate player of the game. But I just
love Max Vancouvering. He's always around the rim. Great defender.
(06:44):
He was guarding Isaac Lee at times, he was guarding
an ankle at times. He can just do that for you,
and that's one of the reasons why I think Unity
Christian is going to be good. I don't have them
on my top three either, and I have it. I
did move them up one spot. My top three look
like this. I've got Rockford one, fourteen to one, five
and oh A top the OK Red. I've got Muskegan
two at twelve and two five and oh A top
(07:06):
the OK Green. And then I have Hudsonville three, and
Unity Christian moved up from five to four. Same thing
as you, Hudsonville. When you look at it. They lost
to Rockford on the road by two. We're gonna get
that rematch, by the way, as we take you through
our February schedule as a game of the week coming up.
And then you've got Unity Christian right there with that
one loss to Hudsonville. So that's the way I see
(07:28):
the top four this week. And I did move up Northfield.
I'll just go ahead and go to five and I'll
let you finish yours North few. With that win over
South Christian, I think they're a team that's trending in
the right direction. I have them lower than you, but
rounding out my top five.
Speaker 5 (07:42):
Yeah, I just I can't move Unity Christian out of
Hudsonville because Hudsonville hasn't done anything to warrant it.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
I mean like three losses.
Speaker 5 (07:47):
Okay, Listen, they lost to Grand Rapits Christian in December
at home in overtime. Now that doesn't look like a
great loss. Grandupits Christian has been struggling in January. They
lost to Grandville on Tuesday night, but this game was
early December when Grandpa's Christian was playing very well, right, Okay,
And since then, Hudsonville's losses are Rockford at the buzzer
and they lost the Muskegan when they had James Martin.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
So I just Hudsonville's playing well.
Speaker 7 (08:11):
Now.
Speaker 5 (08:11):
Listen, last Friday, they were down to Grandville for much
of the game, but they came back with a strong
final ten or eleven minutes or so. I love the
way Javon Daniels is playing right now. Right, he's a junior,
he's a three year varsity guy. I think he's playing well.
And you look at the way these districts break down
in West Michigan. In it I always say this upsets happened.
They can't happen. They probably will happen. But if you
(08:33):
look at that regional potentially at Hudsonville with the likes
of a healthy Byron Center, Northview Hudsonville, I mean, it's
got the potential to be really fun. So anyways, I
have Northview at four, Unity Christian at five, and Jay.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
To your point about Hudsonville, remember we're in the second
goal round now for a lot of these Okay conference divisions,
and both those losses in Okay Red play were on
the road for Hudsonville, right, they were at Rockford and
they were at Miskegon.
Speaker 5 (08:58):
Yeah, you and I are just different, Like I just
don't think it matters, you know what I mean, Like
some gyms get loud. Sure, I think the better team
usually wins.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
I should correct myself Miskeigan in the Oka Green, but
a non conference matchup Atskeigans and at that time, like
you said with James Martin, all right, six through ten,
j I'll let you go first and then I'll counter
with what I've got.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
So just hard to.
Speaker 5 (09:18):
Figure out what to do with Byron Center, because once
again healthy, I think they're at least three, probably two, right,
but they've lost some games without some guys I moved
them to six. You know, win does Cam Carroll come back?
Think about this stretch and you and Buck talked about it.
Speaker 3 (09:31):
Right.
Speaker 5 (09:31):
They have Mona Shores tomorrow night at Mona Shores. I
mean Mona is good. Absolutely, I like Mona Shores. Then
they have Hudsonville next Tuesday, and then they have Miskeigan.
I mean these are games they can and have lost
with a full team. I guess they haven't. They haven't
lost the Miskigan with a full team.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
But they're at Mona Shores and they're at Muskegan two
in the Okay Green second go round.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
But they did lose to Miskegan right fully Healthy. I'm
wrong on that. Yeah, I'm wrong on that.
Speaker 5 (09:58):
At home they've lost a rock Ford Muskegan fully Healthy,
So I apologize there.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
Anyways. I have Byron Center at six.
Speaker 5 (10:05):
I have South Christian at seven, and honestly, I think
South Christian's trending.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
Listen.
Speaker 5 (10:09):
They lost at Norfew last Thursday night at the Buzzer,
but I mean I love north View, so I South
Christian is on the way up, and I certainly didn't
penalize them for that loss. I kept behind Byron Center
because Byron Center did beat him head to head at
the invite. Again, that was a fully healthy Byron Center team.
So anyways, I have South Christian sevencuse South Christian beat
Catholic Central on Tuesday Night fifty to forty. So I
(10:29):
keep Catholic Central at eight, and then I have White
Home nine of Grand having ten, those don't change, all.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Right, So here's what I have six through ten. I
agree with you at the start there I Byron Center
dropped down to six. I think last week I had
him at three. South Christian at seven, and I think
they're a team that's trending up. And I think Carson
Vis I'm going to harken back to David cool Days,
a former mister Basketball or Drew Knight. So his senior
year now he is surgically. We watched him in person
(10:54):
against Whalen, and Whalen's got some athletes. They're not I
would say a fantastic team, but I mean they're not
a bad team. And he was just surgical and when
he was getting his teammates involved in passing for layups
or when he was attacking. He had that career high
game against Northview when he had to take his game
to another level as Drew knights Will talks about this,
sometimes you just have to take over if you can.
As a player. He had thirty eight in that game
(11:16):
and they lose by two. He had a shot to
tie it up with seven seconds left before Brady Schwartz
hit the game winner for Northfew. So I look at
Carson VISs and South Christian, I think they are dangerous
in Division two number seven for me. Catholic cents right
behind him at number eight. Then I've got Grand Appts
Christian even though they're on the way down, sliding down
at nine, and I have Greenville ten.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
How can you? How can you? Because I still look
at some of the wins for Grand Appets Christian.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
They beat Hudson Villa in overtime, a nice win December tenth. Yes,
they beat South Christian at the start of the year.
I mean some of the teams that we're talking about
in the top ten when you look at it with
the Grand Appets Christian, I know they lost to Grandville,
not a good loss on Tuesday, But I look at
Grandappitts Christian and it's hard to argue with some of
their wins compared to some of those losses. As they
sit at nine and five, and they're still five and
(12:02):
one in the Okay.
Speaker 5 (12:03):
White, Okay, that's interesting. I'm at Grandma's Christian to eighteen.
This week we have to loss to Grandville.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
So how deep do you go?
Speaker 5 (12:10):
By the way, I go to twenty and honestly, that's
the next point I want to make. I was completely
taken off guard by Graham's Christian at nine. Sorry, let
me get back on track here. So I have my
top two teams. Not in my top ten are Mona
Shores six and nine, Monas Shores at eleven and sixteen,
and oh Greenville at twelve, And they couldn't be more opposite, right,
I mean those teams are the exact opposite.
Speaker 6 (12:31):
Right.
Speaker 5 (12:31):
One team's got zero losses, one team's got nine, right,
But the team of nine losses has played an unbelievable schedule.
Seven of the nine losses are the teams ranked in
my top nine. Wow, plus Flint Carmen Aine's Worth really
good team out of the flannt area.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
And then the forfeit.
Speaker 5 (12:45):
They won the Mona Shores game by a bunch, they
end up forfeiting that, so they're really seven and eight,
and then Greenville at sixteen, and zero. So Greenville has
not played a team that I have considered at any
point this year in my top twenty. Right, I would
say allen Dale and Coopersville in the River Cities are
their best to wins, right, and I saw him play
Allendale very impressive. They're a good team, no question, But
(13:05):
I just haven't seen him play a team that I've
even considered in the top twenty. More is exact, tops,
They've only played teams that I would consider my top twenty.
But here's my question for you. I love Mona Shors
they losing double overtime to Whitehall on Tuesday. They've been
really close to these games. And think about the rock
For game in the Hustble game, I mean, Johnathan Pittman
missed a bunch of those losses early in the year.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
He's back.
Speaker 5 (13:22):
He scored twenty seven Tuesday night. I love Jordan Bledsoe.
I mean Jordan Bledsoe is just I mean in the
fourth quarter in overtimes, he was clutch from Monashors on Tuesday.
What's your level of concern though, I mean, obviously their
district's brutal with Rockford Mischgan in Greenville. Yet well, we
see motors Greenville the district. I'll give anything to see it,
like I want.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
To see it right, yeah, please, yes, please? Uh what's
your level of concern for Mona Shores? Do you look
at him like me?
Speaker 5 (13:46):
Where it's like this team has talent, they've tested themselves,
they've been right there, or is it they can't get
over the hump and winning these close games?
Speaker 3 (13:52):
Well, and there's the difference.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
You just said it right there and Grand Rapids Christian
and Mona Shores. Let's take a look at their resumes.
What's the difference. Grant Appets Christian is nine and five
five and one, Mona Shores is what six and nine?
So I would argue that Grandappitts Christian has played just
as good, if not better, a schedule than Mona Shores,
but yet they've won. Look at the games, look at
the teams that they played, look at who they've lost to.
Speaker 5 (14:15):
Jay Okay, I am not here to get to criticize
Granmar's Christian schedule. They have definitely played a good schedule.
Like you will not hear me saying they have.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
Nine wins and Mona Shors has six.
Speaker 5 (14:26):
Whe Their schedule is not as tough as Mona Shores.
It's not no one's is with.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
All those Saturday Showcase games and all the scheduling that
they had at the start of the year for Granduppets Christian,
I mean they played South Christian, they played Hutsymbol, they
played Grand Haven.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
I mean they played what Warren Lincoln.
Speaker 5 (14:42):
They played South Christian the first game of the year
when Carsonvist was just coming still playing them.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
I mean, it's all about schedule. Now we're gonna be
where do they schedule at neutral floor tomorrow night? Who
wins Grandfit's Christian or South Christian? In your opinion right now,
I would say South Christian. No further questions, but I
can only go off of what they have played and
they did play otherwise.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
They also, did you play Grandville on Tuesday night?
Speaker 2 (15:06):
You're just throwing out, Okay, Byron Center, South Christian? If
they played with a healthy Cam Carroll, who wins that game?
Speaker 3 (15:12):
Byron Center? Okay, let's see it. I want to see it.
We did see here we go.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
Yeah, but see if that you're just you can't twist
it to one way for your philosophy and definition and
then for the other way.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
Not I just told you that. Granted rapp as Christian
beat South Christian.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
But if they played right now the way they're trending,
South Christian would win that game. So you're saying that
Byron Center is playing better than South Christian right now,
Well not right now because Cam Carroll then playing right. No,
I'm saying with they were okay, yeah before Tuesday. Okay,
And that's where we'll have to leave it because we're
out of time coming up. David Channa, head coach of Northview.
That's why we love the LFSU basketball Blitz. Every week
(15:51):
we come to a Thursday six to seven back with
more after this?
Speaker 1 (16:03):
Sure?
Speaker 4 (16:03):
Now for three? Can he get going from the left
wind or no? Tipped out of their bond up ahead?
Bow im but ahead of the pack, plays it up ahead.
It's a twenty five twenty ball game. Here come the
Bulldogs and coached. So if I'm gonna take a time out.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Let's going to the Montel Construction coaches corner on the
boys side this week and joining us right now. Northview
head coach in his sixth season, David Channa, and he's
been categorized by his ad Pat Marsman. I went back
and read a piece when he was hired at north
View coming over from Mona Shores and before that at
Kenway Hills as a basketball junkie. So, David, I would
take that label because I'm a basketball junk. I consider
(16:41):
myself as a gracious label. But where did that basketball
junkiness come from?
Speaker 3 (16:48):
For you?
Speaker 6 (16:49):
That's an interesting question. I gotta be honest, I've ever
been actually asked this question before. Truthfully, it's you know,
growing up tho it was just kind of what I did.
You know, it helped me pass time and kept me
busy as a kid. And when I got out of
the military, I came back and started coaching at Kenwell
Hills under TJ. Meherman, and it just kind of grew
from there. And you know, I think the most fun
(17:11):
part about coaching is definitely the relationships. You know, obviously,
winning championships and everything like that is great, but you know,
just the relationships with past players. You know, we got
kids playing all over the place now in college and
I'm attending former players' weddings, and we got professionals overseas,
and for me, it's just it's amazing to watch them
just grow as people. You know, it's it's a cool
(17:34):
it's cool to be able to experience the journey with them.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
David, I'll share it with you my story and I
think Jason's as similar. We love high school basketball, football,
and I couldn't wait. As a kid, basketball was always
my favorite. I had an older brother until I was
old enough for my dad and my brother because it
was an all day event to take me down to
the Chrysler Center and watch the state finals when it
used to be all right there at the University of Michigan.
(17:59):
And I think I had to be like nine or
ten years old for my dad so I can put
up with you all day and you know, and go
to those games.
Speaker 3 (18:05):
But I was right there with you. I loved watching it.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
In high school basketball in the Grand ape As area
when I was growing up as a kid was phenomenal.
Speaker 3 (18:11):
Going back to Sugar mel and all the great players.
Speaker 6 (18:14):
Oh yeah, I actually no, Sugar mal Well. He's still
in the area and he still plays pick up basketball games.
If he didn't know that, and he's also typically the
best player on the floor. Somethings just don't change.
Speaker 5 (18:25):
Because you talked about players, former players that you have playing,
you know at the next level. I know you were
playing Saturday night, so you didn't get to go in person,
but to see Kyler vander Jack and E. J. Bryant's
play against each other in a Central Western game like
that Saturday night, What does that mean to you as
a coach?
Speaker 6 (18:41):
It means so much to me. You know, it was
kind of cool they both checked in at the same
time and they were sitting back to back at the
scores table, and you know, it's just for me when
I see moments like that, it's always fun for me
to just experience that, and you know, be in the
moment that I kind of start to think back on,
you know, their freshman and sophomore years and is kind
of the growth of you know, who they became over
(19:02):
the years, and it's it's just it's really cool to
be a part of it, you know. And you know
they say it takes the village, and it definitely does.
Just to have a small piece in their lives. I'm
very fortunate, David.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
You guys are eleven and three as we speak taping
this this week. Six and oh a top what is
a very tough, okay goal. You get a big win
the other night at home over South Christian, another shot
at the Buzzer by Brady Schwartz, who is becoming famous
I think for that in Wildcat Country.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
But you look you look at.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
It though, and would you agree with us as we
start to converse about your squad, I mean the depth
not only that you're seeing in your division, but in
boys basketball in the West Best area. Jane and I
each week have a tough time with our top ten rankage.
It is incredible to watch it and good to see.
Speaker 6 (19:47):
Absolutely. I think the cool thing about this year is
there's a lot of parody, you know, throughout the state.
Anybody can kind of lose to anybody in any night.
You know, we saw it just in the night or
so they put down to Brother Rice and lost. You know,
it's just it's it's fun to be a part of.
You know, I think the days of having kind of
one powerhouse team that runs through everything is are over.
You know. We've got we've got teams everywhere in programs
(20:09):
everywhere that can be sending given night, and it's definitely
fun to be a part of. Makes you makes you
prepare a little bit harder, that's for sure.
Speaker 5 (20:15):
Northew boys basketball coach David Channon joining us in the
coach's corner.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
Coach, you played a really good schedule.
Speaker 5 (20:20):
You've had some tight games, right, I mean Rockford early
on and Obver here on Ferndale, Warren Lincoln, a lot
of close games. And then you get South Christian which
you win at home by two in a late shot
by Brady Swartz, and then you go four overtimes Saturday
night against Lima, Ohio.
Speaker 3 (20:35):
How much do you learn about.
Speaker 5 (20:36):
Your team in these close type games and how much
do you think it'll help you as you guys go forward?
Speaker 6 (20:42):
You know, you learn so much about your guys, and
I think, you know, one of the things that we
do in last year is we try and go and
play you know, the biggest and baddest that we can
find to put our kids in those tough, trenulous situations
where they got to be, you know, not just physically ready,
but you know, emotionally and mentally able to sustain it.
You know, I've learned going through the district tournament, the
regional tournament, you know, the past few years, is you
(21:04):
just never know what's going to happen on any night.
You know it's definitely gonna be a night and to
need some luck if you want to make a run.
But you know, trying to put your guys in situations
where they've got to fight a little bit more and
fight together, and I think it really helps callous them
for the district tournament.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
David, take us through this team. I mean people have
heard of Brady Schwartz. I mean he put up fifty
this year already, but you know he's had multiple games
well over twenty five or thirty. Cam Ryan's in the
night a thousand points for his career. In that win
over South chest I think he had thirty one that night.
To help you lead you but you guys are more
than just those two Division one type players. Talk about
(21:39):
what this year's squad has maybe compared to or different
from teams you've had in the last couple of years.
Speaker 6 (21:45):
Yeah, I think, first and foremost, I think just about
the point guard position. You know, we had a j
Ryans who let us at the point guard stop for
the past four years, and you know, taking him out
of the mix and then inserting Anthony Willis has definitely
been an adjustment and change. But Anthony's doing a great
job as a sophomore. And you know, like you mentioned earlier,
the teams that were playing He's not playing a cupcake schedule,
that's for sure, you know, and he's he's taking it
(22:06):
on the chain and learning as he goes. I'm really
excited about his growth, you know. Just like I mentioned,
he's a sophomore and some of the stuff he does
is just it's it's amazing to watch. Then another sophomore
that's very good for us this year is he Hatibu.
You know, he's He's definitely expanded as scoring presence for us.
He had our first eight points against Lima, Ohio on Saturday,
(22:28):
if I remember right. And outside of that, we've got
a few guys that kind of contribute all over the
place with Jake Thompson, Zach Framporian, Tyrus Thomas, and Julian Charity.
So we've got some deaths and some guys that can
move around a little bit and play different positions, and
you know, all of it. Really believe in defending, which
is first and normal for US coach.
Speaker 5 (22:47):
When you have the players of caliber of Brady and Cam,
you know you're going to see I'm sure a lot
of different ways that opponents will try to defend them, right,
So what are you seeing in terms of when you
have two players that at that I have a level,
and how are you guys trying to you know, counteract
that and still win games because you're eleven and three.
Speaker 6 (23:06):
You know, Honestly, last year it felt harder for us,
you know, because a lot of our auxiliary guys were
not as experience. But now, you know, we've had a
lot of people try and play zones actually more in Lincoln.
You know, one of the best teams in the state
switched his own in the second half against us. But
you know, we've seen it so much in the experience
that we have with Anthony and is the out there.
(23:26):
You know, you kind of just got to play us man,
and I hope they're both off that way. The way
is the way. It seems to be the best process.
So it's definitely helped having more depth this year and experience,
just because you can't really muck it up as much
as they could in the past. You know, outside of that,
those tours just pretty special players and I'm fortunate that
(23:48):
I got out my MinC screel they don't have to
go against, so that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (23:51):
David talk about adversity and one of your leaders, Brady Schwartz,
that he went through. If you remember, we were broadcasting
the game last year year district final with Capers go over.
I believe it Forrest's Northern and Brady has the injury.
You guys do win the district championship, you move on.
But everyone said, oh man, how far could they get,
(24:12):
you know if they didn't have the injury, And luckily
he was able to come back for his senior season.
What has the summer and him going through that meant
as far as his leadership and also your team respecting
the fact of every night they go out there to
lay it on the line.
Speaker 6 (24:29):
No, I think kind of one thing that kind of
sticks out to me with him is just his love
for his teammates. You know, Brady's committed, are into Western Michigan.
This kid, you know, he'll play sickness, you know, blisters
and you name it, whatever's wrong with it. He kind
of keeps going. And I think that speaks violence for him.
Just you know, what type of kitty is. You watch
(24:50):
a lot of these Division one guys throughout the state.
I'm sure you've seen it. You know, load management, they're
taking games off this and the other. You never see
that with the Brady's. We're there to compete, and it's
not because of him or anything personal, because he really
cares about his teammates. And I think that's what's special
about our team and our programs. Our guys really love
each other and they be the licenses. I'll tell you
what I'll I'll never forget being in an emergency until
(25:13):
four a m. That night and all the all the
stress that we went through, and it was just that
was a tough night for us, you know, have mershy basketball,
and honestly for me as a coach too, just to
watch a kid who's glowing so much from the sophomore
year to a senior year, you know, just go down
like that and just kind of a late game situation.
So it's been it's been really fun to kind of
(25:35):
watch him get back to it. You know, he got
cleared in June and he's been with us since June,
driving and coming back and I tell you what, he's uh,
he hasn't mess to beat, that's for sure.
Speaker 3 (25:44):
Coach.
Speaker 5 (25:44):
We've talked a couple of times already about your difficult schedule.
It doesn't get any easier. You start the second go
around in the Okay Gold tomorrow night against Graanpa Junior.
But then Saturday to Quitas, you take on defending Division
one state champion Orchard Lake Saint Mary. Now, sure, the
Eagles have six losses, but they've only lost one game
to a team from Michigan. With Trey McKinney in the lineup,
how do you prepare for this quick turnaround and to
(26:06):
play a team like Orchard Lake Saint Mary. And then
do you plan on Trey McKinney or no, Trey McKinney
because he hasn't played.
Speaker 6 (26:11):
No, while you know who're playing on Trey McKinney, I
think you know for us who want to play that,
like I mentioned before, the best of the best, and
you want all their guys there, we're playing again. It
being there, you know, how do we prever for it?
Luckily we've got a lot of experience in these Friday
Saturday situations in the past few years. So you know,
we'll scout union and you know, our assistant coaches will
begin the Orchard Lake scout and we'll implement that on
(26:34):
Saturday mornings and to walk through and then do it
again right before we get back on the bus and go.
Say so, that's the beauty of these showcase games. You know,
the non league games, they're non conference games, and you
know they're gonna have the same issues that we have
as far as turnaround. So kind of get out there,
be who you are, and let's just see who can
last on the thirty two minutes.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
David, Last, but not least, I talked about, you know,
you're at Kenway Hills, you're at Mona Shores now at
Northfire in your six season. How has the game changed
and you've had to change as a coach with it.
What's the biggest thing that stands out to you over
your career?
Speaker 6 (27:08):
Oh wow, this is another great questions. This is easy
one to answer. I think that kids are so much
more skilled than they've ever been. You know, even this
is my fourteenth year coaching, tenth year as a head
coach overall, and just this skill level of kids, not
just the skill level with the ball in their hands,
but also their basketball IQ has grown so much. So
(27:32):
you know, you're definitely competing in better basketball players, but
awful smarter basketball players as well. So it's been a
growth process and there's been a lot of changes within
just how the game is played. You know, we don't
see the true posts like we used to back in
the day. I mean, everybody who's got to be able
to play in the form of a little bit, especially
if you want to get recruited. It's the game has grown.
(27:53):
I think it's grown for the better. Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (27:55):

the sport of wrestling, Zealand East High School for year
state qualifier, three time OKA Conference champion maybe soon to
(29:18):
be four and one hundred and fifty pound weight class.
Congratulations goes out to Gavin Drtton for the Chicks wrestling team,
a three point eighty seven student, and he just picked
up a week or so ago career win number one
hundred and sixty five in wrestling, seting a school record.
So congratulations again to Gavin Drenton. And with that we
dive into the girls' portion of our show and last
(29:42):
Friday Night, Jay, you and I were up in the
crow's nest at Whalen Union High School, home of the Wildcats,
for a rematch that we saw last year between South
Christian and Harmony Laker and the Wildcats of Whalen, and
we were not disappointed. This one goes down to the wire.
Some free throws in the clutch were the story for
South Christian. They pulled out on the road forty four
(30:02):
forty two and that tough Okay Gold Division and our
uptown cheapskate player of the game offensively Sophia Prince, their
talented junior point guard the lefty with fifteen points, but
also Meredith Helmets was a nice game. She had eleven
and it was a big finish to a week for
South christ It was crazy because they'd played the night
before in that makeup game with Norfield on the girl's side.
Speaker 5 (30:22):
Yeah, and that game was kind of more about defense really,
I mean eighty six total points. It was really close
all the way and it was stop after stop after stop,
and when somebody could get a bucket, it was so big.
And yeah, Prince is just outstanding. IM just such a
good floor leader. But it's really the depth of South
Christian and Lizziewold Heist and Meredith Helmets and then the
freshman Abbey Prince and Nalie wall Heist that both stepped
(30:43):
up as well. So and we were really impressed with
the senior Cammy Boonstrack who played really well on both
ends of the court for South in that game as well.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
And so they take that win on Friday night, and
then we were even talking about it on our broadcast
that they had Catholic Central coming up Tuesday of this week.
They go into Catholic Central and they score a nice
win again and free throws down the stretch fifty two
forty nine. I know you and I both like the
Cougars that are really impressed with a job that Nicole
Fellows is doing there. They've got some talent. But a
(31:10):
nice win for South Christian to keep it rolling.
Speaker 6 (31:13):
Well.
Speaker 5 (31:13):
I was just really looking forward to this game because
all year I've kind of had Catholic Central higher than you,
and you've had South Christian higher, and I've kind of
held that Hudsonville loss against the Sailors. And just like
it always does, it plays out where Pakita's right and
book is wrong, because South Christian.
Speaker 3 (31:27):
Won the game at Granup, It's Catholic Central. Interesting game.
Speaker 5 (31:30):
South Leeds twenty six to twenty one at the half
and Grandupit's Catholic Central comes out and blows the doors
off in the third quarter. You know, they scored twenty
one points in the third quarter if they scored twenty
one the entire first half. They take a nine point
lead in the fourth quarter and then boom. That's what's
impressive about Erica Brown's team is they just step right
up and they made a run back, took the lead back,
(31:51):
it was tied late Sophia Prince. It's two free throws
in the final minute. And that's just what's impressive about
the South Christian team. They're really trending right now. They're
gonna you know, they've got a tough stretch ahead. They
have Wyoming tomorrow night, which I mean, the Wolves are
really talented and that's a tough game always. And then
a week from tomorrow they go to West Catholic. And
you look at this and you're like Division two, where
(32:11):
does South Christian fit in? I mean, they wouldn't play
West Catholic until state quarterfinal. But don't forget their district.
They have howand Christian and then Whyland in their district.
It's going to be a goallet just to get out
of it.
Speaker 2 (32:23):
Well, and we saw it last year and they made
that nice run as a young basketball team, and I
think that's what's scary. They're still scratching the surface because
I mean they have freshmen through seniors that contribute and
play on this team, and as you know, that takes
time to kind of figure out and be comfortable with
what your role is. They're deep, they're talented, they can
take advantage of mismatches as far as players that they
(32:44):
want to insert and kind of go one on one.
They have ball handlers, they have shooters, and so I
think South Christian is still on the rise up, don't you?
And that West Catholic rematch is going to be worth
the price of admission because West Catholic is the real deal,
still only one loss on the season and unbeaten Okay
Goal Division play.
Speaker 6 (33:01):
Well.
Speaker 5 (33:01):
The difference is last year they were the underdog, right,
I mean, kind of nobody saw him coming.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
They'd be Whaling in the semi final.
Speaker 5 (33:07):
They had lost to Whaling twice, you know, and then
they have that unbelievable double overtime game against this year's
gonna be different. I mean, they're gonna be the favorite.
They'll probably be the one seed, and there's a lot
of season left. They still have to play Whaling again
in the regular season, but South Christians likely trending towards
that one seed in that district, so they won't be
the underdog this time. They'll kind of have that target
on their back. So I mean they're handling it incredibly well.
Speaker 6 (33:27):
Right now.
Speaker 2 (33:27):
All right, let's take it through our top ten rankings
four girls this week in West Michigan. I'll go first,
one through five, and then I'll let Jay counter Rockford
number one. We've talked about this in the AP rankings
this week number two in the state and Division one
Belleville is number one, Rams are fourteen and one overall
five and Oh atop the Okay Red then right behind
him ranked number or right behind them ranked number three
(33:49):
in the state in Division one this week, the Buccaneers
of Grand Haven there number two for.
Speaker 3 (33:53):
Me, twelve and one overall four in one.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
They will host Rockford, by the way, the big showdown
Boys and Girl tomorrow night at the home of the Buccaneers.
Then I've got West Catholic number three, number five in
the state and Division two this week twelve and one six,
No a top that okay, goal we talked about. South
Christian goes to four for me, and then growing up
it's Catholic Central rounds out my top five.
Speaker 5 (34:15):
Yeah, so the only difference we have is I have
two and three flips. I have Grand Even two and
West Catholic three, And we've done that.
Speaker 3 (34:20):
We've had that argument. It's very close.
Speaker 5 (34:22):
It's splitting hairs. They're both outstanding. So outside of that,
our top five or the same. Can we just go
to the top seven like I've holand Christian at six
and Forces Northern at seven. I'm sure those are year
six and seven in whichever order.
Speaker 3 (34:30):
Yes, that's exactly the same for me, okay, And then
it gets weird, right weird.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
But here's the thing about Catholic Central and where I
want to give you credit again, they were trending up.
Is one of the games we were watching, why we
were doing our broadcast on Friday, Catholic Central with a
nice win over four Stills Northern.
Speaker 5 (34:45):
Yeah, that was a big one right on Friday, and
they kind of got up in that game and then
just kind of kept them at arms reach and they
win the game by thirteen. So you know, I really
like Calic Central. They got to stay out of foul
trouble a little bit, right, Like in the South Christian
game on Tuesday, ja A Chandler battle foul trouble and
then the sale we're in the bonus in that fourth
quarter and they win the game at the free throw line.
So that was kind of what played them a little
bit against Rockford. But I mean that's just when we
(35:05):
play Rockford, that's just a whole other animal. So I
like Kelex Central too.
Speaker 2 (35:09):
I want to get back to Holland Christian. We talked
about them a little bit last week on the show.
But the Maroons twelve and one, five and zero in
that new look okay Black, they are certainly the team
to beat. And like you talked about earlier with South
Kristad talk out of the back, who wants to play
South Christian more than Holland Christian after last year, right
and losing to them in the regular season this year well.
Speaker 5 (35:28):
And plus I mean that game was in early December.
Like the Maroons are trending right now. They're playing very well.
They beat Wyoming by double digits Tuesday, night and Wyoming
is they're tough. They can be really tough. So Holland
Christian's just going about his business. Two game lead now
in the Okay Black, Like who's going to step up
and challenge them? Zealand, West Zealand, East Spring Lake, Undie Christian.
These are all quality teams that right now, Holland Christian's
(35:50):
just kind of keeping them at arm's length, all right.
Speaker 2 (35:52):
So the Huskies we both have at number seven, twelve
and two overall, three and one after that lost to
Catholic Central and Okay White play on Friday night. So
here's what I've got eight through ten. See where you
agree or disagree. Boy, I'm going Caledonia eight. I know
they just lost to Mona Shores. That's a crazy Okay Green,
isn't it with the injuries to Miskegan. Like we talked about,
Caledonia's ten and three overall, four in one in that division,
(36:14):
tied with Mona Shores a top. Then you have Wayland
at nine. For me, I mean they lost to South
Christian at home by two.
Speaker 3 (36:21):
They were right there.
Speaker 2 (36:21):
Harmony Laker and the Wildcats they're nine and four, three
and two in the Oky Gold. And then i went
this week, Wyoming had two tough losses. They lost to
West Catholic on Friday, sixty eight to fifty two, and
then they just lost earlier this week on Tuesday to
another one lost team we talked about in Holland Christian
but fifty four to forty two. So I had Wyoming
at nine and five drop out of my top ten,
(36:43):
and I replaced him from the River City's alliance with
Kenawa Hills. They're nine in three overall and they're five
and one right now. They in Greenville look like the
teams to beat in the RCA.
Speaker 5 (36:53):
Yeah, what you did is probably makes a lot more
sense of what I did. I mean, although I just
I don't know how you put Kelny eight there, ten
and three. They have the quality wins over Whalen and
Keniwall Hills, but they just lost to Mona Shores on Friday.
I've got no ground to stand out because I have
a team that lost twice and I moved them up.
Speaker 3 (37:09):
So you have Kellern losing Monta Shores and you moved
them up.
Speaker 2 (37:11):
And Mona Shores would probably be to your point, would
probably be my number eleven team.
Speaker 5 (37:15):
Well, and they lost these Grand Rapids on Tuesday, and
that's where this just kind of gets difficult. But you
brought up an interesting point, and I'd like to spend
a minute on this before I get to my eight
nine times. You talked about the ok Green Right, So
you've got four teams within a game of first place Calderonia,
Mona Shores tied with one loss, Miskegan and Reese Puffer
there with two losses. So you've got four teams out
of six battling for a league title.
Speaker 3 (37:34):
There, Wild and Mooly.
Speaker 5 (37:35):
That's nothing. That's nothing compared to the River City's Alliance
where you bought Kenawha Hills into your top ten.
Speaker 6 (37:40):
Right.
Speaker 5 (37:40):
I like Kendrow Hills Melholman really good, but they lost
to Greenville, so they are alone in first place. They
have one conference loss. How about five teams within a
game of first place in the River City's Alliance five? Yeah, right,
You've got Kenow Hills with one league loss, Greenville, Cedar Springs,
and Dale Lowell all with two losses. Caesars Brings lost
(38:01):
to Allen or excuse me, Lowell lost to Allendale on Tuesday,
which really threw a wrench into these into these It's
just like the football season, and don't forget we still
got makeups to do, right Like kenw why Hill still
has to make up a game with Allendale. Lowell still
has makeup a game with Coopersville. So you know, the
win column is a little different there because teams have
to make it up. So we've got a couple of
conference races that are going to be absolutely crazy. So Wyoming, right,
Wyoming loses twice since we last did this show. They
(38:22):
lost at West Catholic on Friday night. They lost at
Holland Christian Tuesday night. I moved them up to number eight.
Maybe this is a problem, an issue I have, but
like I love quality losses. I'd rather you play good
teams than lose, than play bad teams and win.
Speaker 2 (38:36):
That's kind of crazy. You're consistent, though. You did it
with a boys segment with Mona Shores.
Speaker 5 (38:40):
I watched a little bit of that Wyoming West Catholic game,
and that was a game into the second half. I
mean it was I think a three point game in
the third quarter. And you know, I think, what highly
West Catholic at number two? So I have Wyoming at eight,
I have Hudsonville at nine. I just the Eagles have
played well. I mean they have some really quality wins.
They beat South Christian. You know, so I at nine
(39:00):
and five, I have West, I have Hudsonville at ten
at nine excuse me, and then at ten I went
Zealand West. You know, the Ducks are trending a bit.
Beat Zealand East on Saturday, knocked off North.
Speaker 3 (39:11):
Zealand East on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (39:12):
I mean, wow, I was really surprised by that score
and they were really knocking down the threes.
Speaker 5 (39:16):
And same what they did in North View on Tuesday.
So I ended up going with the Zealand West at
ten this week.
Speaker 3 (39:23):
But who knows. It's really tough.
Speaker 2 (39:24):
You know, that's a great point. I mentioned Mona Shores
might be my next team. Zealand West actually might be
my next team. And then don't forget about Zealand East.
I know they lost to Zealand West. You've talked about
their bad loss to Coopersville, but you know last week
even we were talking about they were trending up.
Speaker 3 (39:37):
So how far down do you have to go to
get to Hudsonville.
Speaker 2 (39:39):
Yeah, Hudsonville was See, they're interesting to me because they
got the win over South Christian. But it seems like
they have some rough losses. And that's where I guess
I come into play, is when you.
Speaker 5 (39:50):
So hold on, hold on, when you show was either
is there a rough loss Rockford or West Catholic or
Grand Haven who are all in your top three, or
Forest Hills Northern Right, So you're saying Wyoming is there, right,
I mean that's their only loss of team those scorings.
Speaker 3 (40:04):
Read those scores. When I say rough losses, I'm talking
about everybody's getting crushed by Rock.
Speaker 2 (40:08):
No, I'm not just saying Rockford. I mean some of
those other teams are surprising their double digit losses correct,
So that'll be interesting as we go through too. Remember
an extra week of regular season play for the girls.
They start later with the districts this year than the boys,
who start at the end of February.
Speaker 5 (40:25):
Lost to West calog by eleven, Wyoming by two, Northern
by six, Grand Haven by twenty one, Rockford by twenty nine.
Speaker 3 (40:33):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (40:34):
I don't think that's too bad. You're gonna lose to
Rock for Grand Haven by twenty plus. I mean most
teams are Okay, there you go, you have grad those
are your top two teams.
Speaker 3 (40:42):
I'm not arguing with that is you don't have your
top all right, you don't have your top twelve.
Speaker 2 (40:47):
We'll see what happens next week with our top ten
rankings for the girls. So we come back, We're gonna
release our February schedule of games. There were to be
announced on the website. We've got them now, plus a
makeup game because we missed the game with South Christian Northview.
Will I'll tell you the times, the dates, and the
matchups as part of our Players of the Week conversation
as well, brought to you by Uptown Cheapskate to wrap
(41:07):
up this week four edition of the LMCU Basketball Blitz,
exclusively here on ninety six to one, the.
Speaker 7 (41:13):
Game they've battled on the hardwood for over one hundred years,
with the two hundred and fourteen games producing a total
score differential of just ten points. Now, Calvin and Hope
continue their storied basketball rivalry Saturday afternoon from Calvin University.
Both teams are battling for the top spot on the
(41:34):
MIAA Conference in jostling for NCAA tournament berths. Join me
Bob Sack for all the actions Saturday at two forty
five on Talk twelve thirty am, presented by Skipper and
Ostrink Wealth Management.
Speaker 2 (41:51):
As we welcome you back before we get to the
uptown cheapskate players of the Week for the Lake Shore
in the grinder Apets area, It's all about for us
two in year three three. Baskets for Kids and Raising
Money for Kids Food Basket are nonprofit to nourish local
kids to reach their full potential. We do that by
partnering with our title sponsored Lake Misken Credit Union and
they have agreed to again this season donate fifty dollars
(42:14):
for every made three pointer in our game of the
week broadcast girls or boys to total towards a season
of giving four kids food Basket and right now we
had seven last Friday night in the Whalen South Christian
girls game combined, so three hundred and fifty dollars. We
had five on the boys game on Tuesday night between
Unity Christian and Byron Center. So all told, up through
(42:36):
seven games with three games left in the regular season,
thirty three hundred dollars raised for Baskets for Kids. Thank
you so much to our friends at Lake Miskan Credit Union.
And I know as we tell coaches and players about it. Jay,
You've been out there with me. They get excited because
it's kids helping kids, which is what it's all.
Speaker 3 (42:51):
About here in West Mischkit with high school basketball. Yeah,
it's a great cause. And there's more on the way.
Speaker 6 (42:55):
Right.
Speaker 5 (42:55):
We're just just a little over the halfway points, so
we'll get plenty more baskets.
Speaker 2 (42:58):
For get well and listen to these matchups that we
have for you where we think there could be raining
three pointers, especially with boys matchups. So here's what we're
gonna do for February. If you look now at the
Trinity Health Michigan High School Basketball page at nine to
six to one, the game dot com or wood Radio
dot com, we will have these up for you February eleventh.
We flex that game from February fourteenth, So now instead
(43:20):
of a Friday night, Tuesday night because I'm gonna be
on vacation for a week, So February eleventh, how about this, Jane,
the okay run on the boys side. The rematch between
Rockford and Hudsonville, this time at the home of the Eagles,
was a two point win for the Rams the first
go round.
Speaker 5 (43:34):
Yeah, and all kinds of okay, right, implications on the line.
There's still some games to play before we get there,
but right now Rockford zero losses, Hudsonville just won. It
seems to always be a great matchup no matter what sport.
When Rockford Hutsville.
Speaker 2 (43:45):
Play seven o'clock tip off for that on ninety six,
won the game, and because we miss due to the
winter weather the first go round Northview and South Christian
at Northview, which the Wildcats won by two. We're gonna
give you the rematch and I will be gone that week.
But February eighteenth, another Tuesday night, one week after, we
have Hudsonville and Rockford. Jason Hutt will be on the
play by play Buck Gino courtside with him on the color.
(44:07):
You guys are gonna get Norfew at South Christian and
that most likely the way it's trending, will decide the
Okay Gold Division crown for the boys.
Speaker 3 (44:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (44:15):
This, I mean, this doesn't get much better right there,
you're telling me February eleventh, I get to go to
Rockford Hutsonville February eighteenth, Northfew, South Christian Like these are
matchups that we dream about all year long, and we
wait all off season. Four and so we got them
on back to back Tuesdays, could be more excited.
Speaker 2 (44:28):
And then our regular season finale because the girls remember
start their district play and the road to the Brezil
Center one week later, Tuesday, February twenty fifth, out at
Redmond Potter Gymnasium. They've redone it beautiful. It's going to
be Muskegan the Lady Big Reds hosting West Catholic and
that's a non conference matchup to get ready before they
(44:49):
start district play the following week. How good's that going
to be? Especially we've talked about Muskegan right now challenging
themselves as a basketball team, and they're getting better because
they're too two star guards are out. If they get
them back from injury for that game, that'd be perfect
for them. If they can play to kind of knock
off the rust a little bit before the tournament.
Speaker 3 (45:10):
Look out, that's gonna be a great game.
Speaker 5 (45:12):
Well, and don't forget they just took Grand Haven thirty
seven to thirty three out Tuesday, and you have Grandaven two.
I have them three, so even out without being whole,
I mean, this Skeikon team has potential. So yeah, it's
gonna be. That should be a great match.
Speaker 2 (45:26):
Up Buck Geo and I will be out there for
that when I get another seven o'clock tips. So all
up on the schedule. Those who are three regular season
games for February, can't wait, and glad to have you
long for the ride here on ninety six to one
the game. All right, let's go to our first Grand
Rapids Area players of the week. It's brought to you
by our friends at Uptown Cheapskate, and we've talked about
each one of these players. We'll get a twenty five
(45:47):
dollars gift card to do some shopping on us. It's
brought to you by Uptown Cheapskate. They've got three locations
to serve you, Grandville, kent Wood and of course the
newest one along the Lakeshore and Holland. Those gift cards
are good for any location, and you need to check
out Uptown Cheapskate if you haven't already, just go to
Uptown cheapskate dot com and you can get monthly deals.
As we speak, Jay, let's start with the Grand Rapids
(46:08):
Area boys first. I'll do this one. Cam Ryan's junior
for Norfield, and I emphasized junior because he went over
the one thousand career point mark in that two point
victory last week over South Christian.
Speaker 3 (46:18):
He had thirty one in that game.
Speaker 2 (46:21):
And he is getting major looks as far as the
Power four and the schools. He hasn't committed yet where
he's going to go.
Speaker 3 (46:27):
Well, and think about this.
Speaker 5 (46:28):
He plays both ends of the court and he can
guard pretty much any position on the other end, and
then he can score it at all three levels. And
cam Erd's superstar, like no question about it. The college
coaches are coming after him because he's gonna make somebody
really happy.
Speaker 3 (46:39):
All right, and you have an audible mention, Yeah, IM
gonna go Brendan Cargill, and I want to see that.
Speaker 5 (46:43):
For c Central has kind of been up and down
a little bit in the struggle, but forty four Friday
in the winnover for Stills Eastern. I mean, Brendan Cargill
is a bucket getter and he's having a great year
for the Rangers, and he had a big game against
an old rival for Soils.
Speaker 3 (46:56):
Eastern all right, for the girls side for the Grand
Appazuria player. So I'm gonna go.
Speaker 5 (46:59):
Taylor Lloyd, the freshman from thorn Apple Kellogg school record
eight threes. Friday night, she scored twenty nine points in
a win over Grand Rapids Union.
Speaker 3 (47:08):
So Taylor Lloyd just a ninth grader, and.
Speaker 2 (47:10):
I'm gonna go on and well mention here Sophia Prince,
who we saw in person last Friday night and that
went over Whalen. She had fifteen was our uptown cheapskate
player of the game and that went offensively. She filed
that up with a nice win over Grandupit's Catholic Central
this past Tuesday on the road with fourteen points, and
I think she had fourteen to help lead the way
in that victory last Thursday in the makeup game with Northview.
So honorable mentioned is Sophia Prince, junior point god for
(47:33):
South Christian.
Speaker 5 (47:34):
Yeah, Prince, She's really raising her game as these games
get bigger. She's outstanding right for our Lake Shore uptown
cheapskate players of the week. I'm gonna go Keishawn Johnson
from Muskegan for the boys and remember Miskegan's just here
getting used to play without James Martin. And so Friday
night against rhes Puffer, he goes for thirty two points.
I remember Miskeigin's got talent. Johnson's committed to Fairs State, right,
and so he's outstanding and he goes for thirty two
(47:55):
in a big way. Then he turned around had thirteen
and the win over Autaw Hills on Saturday. And my
honorable mention for that is Cam Thompson thirty five Tuesday
night in the double overtime win against Mona Shores. I
do want to give a shout out to Hunter Osborne,
who was huge in that game. He had eighteen for Whitehall.
He had nine in the second overtime, including scoring the
first eight points of the second overtime. It was tied
(48:16):
at seventy for the first overtime. He single handled he
gave Whitehall a seventy at seventy lead in that second extra.
Speaker 2 (48:21):
Session and they are now twelve and two as we speak.
The Vinkings. We've raved about him for football and they're
not all good in basketball. Back to back years led
by Cam Thompson, who's going to Western. They were ranked
this week in the AP rankings Division two number six
in the state. I know you've had him in your
top ten and they will come to Rockford for that
makeup game this Monday night. So if you want to
(48:42):
see cam Thompson and actually gets obviously the Rams, the
top team that we have in the top ten, there
you go.
Speaker 3 (48:48):
That one's gonna be worth it for sure. All right.
Speaker 5 (48:50):
So for our girls, Lake Shore Uptown Chiefs skate Player
of the week, it was either going to be Classon
or Clawson the law Firm right honorable mentioned to Logan
Clawson from Monash who had sixteen Friday night and that
huge win over Caladaray. We're gonna go Jordan Clawson KLAA
SCN from Zealand West twenty seven in the win over
Northview on Tuesday. Also fifteen against Zealand East on Saturday.
(49:10):
So Jordan Classon from Zealand West is sorry, Lake Short
Player the.
Speaker 3 (49:13):
Week all right?
Speaker 2 (49:13):
In our final minute or so, Jay, let's highlight some
of the big matchups. I know another big Saturday to Quinas.
And speaking of the Northview Wildcats, they got Orchid Lake
Saint Mary's in a great matchup.
Speaker 5 (49:23):
That's a great matchup. East Camp win starts it off
against Ferndale at one. Then granted up it's Christian takes
on Detroit cast Tech. They can prove you right with
a big win over a really good cast Tech team
at two forty five Detroit Renaissance East Lansing is the
four to thirty game in Aquinas, then the six to
fifteen game Trey McKinney rche Lake Saint Mary against Schwartz,
Ryan's and Northview, and then the Nightcapmskegan takes on a
really good in every here on team.
Speaker 2 (49:43):
And don't forget as far as Okay Red play good
doubleheader here in grand Haven tomorrow night, and it starts
with the girls game. Rockford and grand Haven are top two,
well my top two teams, two of the top three
for Jay in our current rankings, and then of course
the boys will be a good matchup to follow as well.
Speaker 5 (49:59):
Absolutely, we got Catholic Central at grunder Fitz Christian in
the ok White as well, and then girls games. How
about West Catholic at Whalen Holland Christian Is Zealand West.
Speaker 3 (50:08):
Good schedule, we.
Speaker 2 (50:08):
