welcome live to the Jack President Student Events Center here
on the campus of Michigan State University, where today it's
Championship Saturday for boys high school basketball in the state
of Michigan and four teams would be crowned state fans.
Starting first with our Division four matchup, and what a

our rapid radio scoreboard updates at halftime and throughout our
broadcast because it is a busy college basketball, high school basketball,
even the Bistons play to night round Ball day. Jay,
we love it. It's like our Christmas and what a
matchup we have. It's one we thought we might have

even back at the start of the regular season, and
ironically enough, these two teams did meet to start the season,
at least for Fowler, and it was Fowler pulling it
out as they get it done. Just one of two
losses for trying to be Christian to start year. As
it was a sixty two to fifty nine game. Could
be like that today, although both coaches will tell you

there are different teams than they were to start the season.
As Fowler comes in at twenty five and three overall
sixteen to two, good for second place behind the power
that is Powama Westphilia in the CMAC Conference. In Trinity
Christian twenty six and two overall, a perfect six to zero,
winning the Alliance League.

When you look at that matchup at Trinity Christian back
on December twenty, back on December third, and you say
sixty two to fifty nine. Interesting, you talk about how
neither team is what they were then, and that couldn't
be more true. Fowler was coming off a football run.
Most of these guys, almost all of them, were on
their football team that made it to the state semi finals,

lost by a point to Beal City. Remember Beal City
won the state championship game by thirty plus, right, So
this is a really good Foller team. They had hardly
had any practice going into that game against Trinity Christian.

And you look at Triney Christian.

Cody Osben, who's really emerged for them, had sixteen in
the semi final. We saw m play really well against
coming to Christian back in January. He was on JV
then he didn't even play in this game. He sat
on the bench. He was fifth quartering, but he didn't
even check in once. I mean, this guy's starting now
and contributing. So both teams completely different from December third.
I think Fowler wants it to be like December third.
They want to shoot, play fast, get in the sixties.

Trinity Christian has not given up more than fifty eight
in a game since then. In fact, they've only allowed
three opponents all year to score more than fifty.

have athleticism, well coached, tough, but you look at it
once they drop down into their they have really rolled
to this state title game in the President Center, winning
by double digits.

Yeah, neither team's had super close games. I mean, tragedy
tested a little bit in that quarterfinal gets a really
good Adrian Lenaway Christian team, but despite shooting poorly, still
won that game by double digits. And follow you talk
about their schedule. You mentioned Marshall, they played fruit Port,
the ok silver champion at Cornerstone. Of course they played
PW twice in the Central Michigan Athletic Conference. The PW

was here on Thursday in the semi final. Plus that
league has other really solid teams like Lansburg and Portland
Saint Pat. So you're right battle tested, and that's the
advantage you have at Division four. You can go out
there and you can play bigger, better programs, and that
paves the way, I mean Mark Keeler, that's been the
blueprint for Mark Keeler for thirty eight years.

Yeah, and you look at it Miskegant Heights Academy, you're
familiar with, maybe on the west side of the state.
Foller rolled them in the regional final, seventy six to
thirty five. Their closest game came in that regional semi
final to one of their rivals up North Mount Pleasant
Sacred Hard sixty to fifty three to seven point game.
But again, Fowler likes to shoot the three, they like
to get on the break, they love to rebound the basketball.

I know that's gonna be one of your keys coming up, Jay,
But I mean, these are like looking at a mirror
because one of the things you look at with Trinady Christie,
you always seem to have size, and they can have
guards that lead the way in transition. They're just tough
to stop. Then once they start hitting the threes like
they did in the semi final, it's pretty much over.
Fowler can counter that today and I'm just really looking
forward to this matchup.

Yeah, you know, it's interesting Tryudy Christian lists their size
on the roster submitted the NHS say Foler does not.
I thought, no big deal. I watched the game Thursday,
follower Scott's size. But how tall are these guys. I'll

with this matchup. Before we get to the players to
watch and keys to this contest in the Division four
state championship game, how about catching everyone up on what
happened yesterday. You had the Division one and Division two
semi finals and it's gonna set up for some great
championship games. To follow ours this afternoon and evening.

Well, maybe the game of the weekend was that D
one semi final. Mister basketball goes home. East Lansing downs
Orchard Lake Saint Mary fifty one, forty four to ten.
With the Trojans have really taken their game to another
level here the last month or so, and so East
Lansing will play for its first Day title since nineteen
fifty eight. They'll take on the Zebras of Wayne Memorial,
who knocked off Flint Carmenas were sixty six to forty nine.

Of course, Karmen dns Are beat Rockford in the regional final,
then Byron Center excuse me rock for the regional semifinal,
and the en Byron Center in the state quarterfinal. And
in Division two Mulus Some Academy North knocked off Kingsford
fifty two to forty and Warren Lincoln beat Granford's Catholic
Central last night forty three.

You knew that was going to be a low scoring game,
first one to forty type deal because both those teams
defense so well. As impressed as I've been with Chris
Pearl and the Cougar's defense all year, I mean, Warren
Lincoln can really guard. And you know, the Cougar's had
a chance in that game. They led it to half,
it was tied in the fourth quarter, but they struggled.
They won for ten threes, oh for fourth a free
throw line in the second half, and ultimately that was

And let's be honest, they really got better as the
season went on. And Chris Pearl in his first year
as the head coach, he was assistant coacher O TJ.
Meherman working with those guys, knew those guys. But you
know everyone's thinking, right, you know, they Christian with their
record is so good. You got South Christian. They beat
them all on the way to the Bresident Center, got
to the final four, and they were young basketball team.
One of the things that I love, whether it was

Jack Bowen the senior whose career is done, all these
young guys that I saw with the video and the
press conference afterwards, is they're already starting that chip on
their shoulder for next year. They're excited. Guys like pob Watchkins.
I mean, they really have some nice players coming back.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
You feel for a guy like Jack Bowen because that
guy was the glue, the heart and soul that team.
I mean, there is zero chance they get anywhere near
here without him.

He was unbelievable this year.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
But no doubt, whatever success they have next year in
the years beyond that will be in large part due
to the example that Jack Bowen sat.

But you're right, they.

Only had two seniors on the roster Bones the only
one that really played in close games, big games like this.

They are very young.

They're four juniors all started last year as sophomores. There'll
be three year stars in the varsity next year and
their freshman class.

And I know people are excited to listen to or
watch Michigan State today in the Big Ten semi finals
as well as Michigan got a big win last night.
If you went to bed like I did, before it
was done, but they were starting to roll. They beat
for Due again. So Michigan will play Maryland in the
second semi final down an indie. But the Michigan State
connection talking to Juw Knights because he saw them play.
It's very cool because the East Lansing team has two

sons of former Spartans. If you remember Kelvin Torbert, his
son a phenomenal player for the Trojans in the standout.
Then Andre Hudson who was on that national championship team,
his son on the squad as well, both going to
be future college players.

Yeah, well, kJ Torbert might be the favorite for Miss
Basketball next year.

Mister Basketball next year?

Will he follow in his dad's footsteps and come here
and play at the bresident That'll be interesting to watch.
And you know, Cam Hudson is outstanding and a lot
of people feel like you should have been a Mister
Basketball finals this year, He's head to the Saint Louis.

He'll be a billkn We're expecting a big crowd where
you can always seat it with Fowler because you have
followed who's not very far away from the Lancing area.
And then East Lansing to follow, and that game will
be a dynamic doubleheader right after ours A twelve fifteen tip.
Both those will be live if you want to watch
them at home on the Fanuel Sports network. Of course,
we'll have this one live as well on the radio
side of Nina six won the game, so that sets

up the matchups for the morning slash early afternoon session.
Then at four point thirty j Division three Arts and
Tech Academy of Pontiac. They get to the state championship game.
Fun team to watch against Riverview Gabriel Rashardon. You and
I were both kind of impressed with Gabriel Rashard because
they took out a very good Poama Westphilia boys team.

Yeah, I know that this Gabriel Shard team's really good.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
They're basically all back from last year's run here to
the Brazlan Center. But boy, Grady, Aklyn and Petew can
really play. And so I was a little bit surprised
that wasn't at least a little bit closer. Uh But
boy a tap, you know, I love to see new
teams get here. They've obviously the venue, they've even been
a high school that long compared to you know, some schools.

So that's gonna be an interesting matchup of D three
for sure.

All Right, So that is a four to thirty approximate
tip that at six forty five to end championship Saturday tonight,
Division two matchup Warren Lincoln, who knocked down Grandapp's Catholic Central,
and they'll take on Romulus Summit Academy North, the team
that we're familiar with a little bit. They were at
our jam at the Van a few years back and
just a fairly new school at that time, but really
coming on, they've got some talent, so you can check

that one as well. Let's go to the players to
watch and our Vandaloon Holme Frow mc keys to the
contest again. As we're counting down to tip off, we're
about three and a half minutes away from the national
anthemy you're starting lives. But let's focus on the Follower
Eagles because before we talk about trying to Christian might
people might be familiar with. We've talked about their athleticism.
A lot of football players in the small school playing

basketball as well. But this is a team that has
been building for this year, building for this game, and
they are led by some outstanding talented the individuals.

They really are.

You know, they've got multiple double digit scores. They are
led by Jacob Haffman, number four. He's the point guard.
He was the quarterback on their very successful football team.
I love his size, but you know their balance. He
averages twelve and a half. They've got Aaron Simon as
their two guard. He averages twelve point three. You know,
Asher Kegnish neck Kennick sch Neck. You know, he was

big for them in that semi final wins. Shot it
really well left handed. That's kind of been the theme
of our year in games. We've called the lefties. Poured
in from three Zill loves it Asher, Kate thirteen, I
like to call him Kate thirteen. Letters in the last name,
two are to pronounce Kate thirteen can really shoot it
from the left hand. And then you've got the other halfman,
Alex Happened a little bigger, more of a forward type player,
averaging eleven points per game. So they have those four

players averaging between eleven and twelve and a half and
then nobody else over four and a half. So they've
got kind of the four horsemen. When you talk about
the Foler Eagles, Yeah.

And the Hoffmans are cousins. They are not brothers. You'll
find out a lot of Fowler bt of cousins because
of so many family members that stay in that community.
You do have the Epkee brothers today, you also have
Balen cousins. So we'll have fun with that with a
roster as they go on. So that's a look at
the Eagles of Bowler coming in twenty five and three.
Cam Rowley seventy eight and fifty two and six years

as head coach at the varsity level for the Eagles.
Now the story also mark Keeler his final season, thirty
eight season, thirteenth appearance in the state finals. He's trying
to get above five hundred. He's six and six. We
were talking to coach. He's loose, juicy, over seven hundred wins,
third all time in MHSA high school basketball history. That's unbelievable. Yeah.

Right now, we're sitting directly across from the Triity bench
and Coach Keeler's just sitting there by himself with his
arms closed.

You can only wonder what's going through his mind.

Thirty eight years, so much success, and this is it
for him today, win, lose, draw, it doesn't matter. And
the Triunity people, you and I, we could never thank
him enough for what he's given not only to the
Defender Nation, but the high school basketball.

In West Michigan and the state of Michigan.

Trying to go for back to back state championships, He's
got six of them, but.

He's never won back to back.

Three other times he's been in the title game after
winning the year before ninety seven they lost, two thousand
and seven they lost, and of course twenty twenty three.

So one of the big things that you talked about
with him and the Trianity staff. But it's gonna be
maybe top on your keys to the contest rebounding today, right,
who wins the rebounding edge?

That's absolutely right.

Fowler shoots a lot of threes, sixteen of their first
twenty seven shots on Thursday, we're from three, and they
absolutely crash the offensive glass. They had twenty one second
half second chance points in that win on Thursday. They
want to shoot the three and they want to rebound
half of their misses. If Triody Christian can't defend the
defensive glass, they're gonna be in trouble.

I think Keith players in foul trouble something to watch too, right.
I mean they have depth both sides, but not a
ton of depth.

Jacob Hoffman, Aaron Simon, Alex Hoffman, and Joe Epke the

Well, listen, there's two guys that played key roles last
Yr's state title team. And those two guys get the

That's been his motto for the thirty eight season that
I would say he's done pretty well. One out of
every three years they're playing for a state championship. Here

leading scorers for the Eagles at twelve and a half

And he's really got an all around game.

Championship Saturday for boys high school basketball in the state
of Michigan and four teams would be crowned state fans.
Starting first with our Division four matchup, and what a
good one we have. Repikinda along with Jason Hutting court

downtown ground Rapids. You're here for Joe coming up with
our rapid radio scoreboard updates at halftime and throughout our
broadcast because it is a busy college basketball, high school basketball,
even the Bistons play to night round Ball day. Jay,
we love it. It's like our Christmas and what a
matchup we have. It's one we thought we might have

even back at the start of the regular season, and
ironically enough, these two teams did meet to start the season,
at least for Fowler, and it was Fowler pulling it
out as they get it done. Just one of two
losses for trying to be Christian to start year. As
it was a sixty two to fifty nine game. Could
be like that today, although both coaches will tell you

there are different teams than they were to start the season.
As Fowler comes in at twenty five and three overall
sixteen to two, good for second place behind the power
that is Powama Westphilia in the CMAC Conference. In Trinity
Christian twenty six and two overall, a perfect six to zero,
winning the Alliance League.

When you look at that matchup at Trinity Christian back
on December twenty, back on December third, and you say
sixty two to fifty nine. Interesting, you talk about how
neither team is what they were then, and that couldn't
be more true. Fowler was coming off a football run.
Most of these guys, almost all of them, were on
their football team that made it to the state semi finals,

lost by a point to Beal City. Remember Beal City
won the state championship game by thirty plus, right, So
this is a really good Foller team. They had hardly
had any practice going into that game against Trinity Christian.

And you look at Triney Christian.

Cody Osben, who's really emerged for them, had sixteen in
the semi final. We saw m play really well against
coming to Christian back in January. He was on JV
then he didn't even play in this game. He sat
on the bench. He was fifth quartering, but he didn't
even check in once. I mean, this guy's starting now
and contributing. So both teams completely different from December third.
I think Fowler wants it to be like December third.
They want to shoot, play fast, get in the sixties.

Trinity Christian has not given up more than fifty eight
in a game since then. In fact, they've only allowed
three opponents all year to score more than fifty.

tested a little bit in that quarterfinal gets a really
good Adrian Lenaway Christian team, but despite shooting poorly, still
won that game by double digits. And follow you talk
about their schedule. You mentioned Marshall, they played fruit Port,
the ok silver champion at Cornerstone. Of course they played
PW twice in the Central Michigan Athletic Conference. The PW

was here on Thursday in the semi final. Plus that
league has other really solid teams like Lansburg and Portland
Saint Pat. So you're right battle tested, and that's the
advantage you have at Division four. You can go out
there and you can play bigger, better programs, and that
paves the way, I mean Mark Keeler, that's been the
blueprint for Mark Keeler for thirty eight years.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Yeah, and you look at it Miskegant Heights Academy, you're
familiar with, maybe on the west side of the state.
Foller rolled them in the regional final, seventy six to
thirty five. Their closest game came in that regional semi
final to one of their rivals up North Mount Pleasant
Sacred Hard sixty to fifty three to seven point game.
But again, Fowler likes to shoot the three, they like
to get on the break, they love to rebound the basketball.

I know that's gonna be one of your keys coming up, Jay,
But I mean, these are like looking at a mirror
because one of the things you look at with Trinady Christie,
you always seem to have size, and they can have
guards that lead the way in transition. They're just tough
to stop. Then once they start hitting the threes like
they did in the semi final, it's pretty much over.
Fowler can counter that today and I'm just really looking
forward to this matchup.

Yeah, you know, it's interesting Tryudy Christian lists their size
on the roster submitted the NHS say Foler does not.

Well, maybe the game of the weekend was that D
one semi final. Mister basketball goes home. East Lansing downs
Orchard Lake Saint Mary fifty one, forty four to ten.
With the Trojans have really taken their game to another
level here the last month or so, and so East
Lansing will play for its first Day title since nineteen
fifty eight. They'll take on the Zebras of Wayne Memorial,
who knocked off Flint Carmenas were sixty six to forty nine.

Of course, Karmen dns Are beat Rockford in the regional final,
then Byron Center excuse me rock for the regional semifinal,
and the en Byron Center in the state quarterfinal. And
in Division two Mulus Some Academy North knocked off Kingsford
fifty two to forty and Warren Lincoln beat Granford's Catholic
Central last night forty three.

You knew that was going to be a low scoring game,
first one to forty type deal because both those teams
defense so well. As impressed as I've been with Chris
Pearl and the Cougar's defense all year, I mean, Warren
Lincoln can really guard. And you know, the Cougar's had
a chance in that game. They led it to half,
it was tied in the fourth quarter, but they struggled.
They won for ten threes, oh for fourth a free
throw line in the second half, and ultimately that was

the difference.

And let's be honest, they really got better as the
season went on. And Chris Pearl in his first year
as the head coach, he was assistant coacher O TJ.
Meherman working with those guys, knew those guys. But you
know everyone's thinking, right, you know, they Christian with their
record is so good. You got South Christian. They beat
them all on the way to the Bresident Center, got
to the final four, and they were young basketball team.
One of the things that I love, whether it was

Jack Bowen the senior whose career is done, all these
young guys that I saw with the video and the
press conference afterwards, is they're already starting that chip on
their shoulder for next year. They're excited. Guys like pob Watchkins.
I mean, they really have some nice players coming back.

You feel for a guy like Jack Bowen because that
guy was the glue, the heart and soul that team.
I mean, there is zero chance they get anywhere near
here without him.

He was unbelievable this year.

But no doubt, whatever success they have next year in
the years beyond that will be in large part due
to the example that Jack Bowen sat.

Only had two seniors on the roster Bones the only
one that really played in close games, big games like this.

They are very young.

They're four juniors all started last year as sophomores. There'll
be three year stars in the varsity next year and
their freshman class.

watch Michigan State today in the Big Ten semi finals
as well as Michigan got a big win last night.
If you went to bed like I did, before it

for Due again. So Michigan will play Maryland in the
second semi final down an indie. But the Michigan State
connection talking to Juw Knights because he saw them play.
It's very cool because the East Lansing team has two

sons of former Spartans. If you remember Kelvin Torbert, his
son a phenomenal player for the Trojans in the standout.
Then Andre Hudson who was on that national championship team,
his son on the squad as well, both going to
be future college players.

Yeah, well, kJ Torbert might be the favorite for Miss
Basketball next year.

Will he follow in his dad's footsteps and come here

followed who's not very far away from the Lancing area.
And then East Lansing to follow, and that game will

I were both kind of impressed with Gabriel Rashard because
they took out a very good Poama Westphilia boys team.

Yeah, I know that this Gabriel Shard team's really good.

They're basically all back from last year's run here to
the Brazlan Center. But boy, Grady, Aklyn and Petew can
really play. And so I was a little bit surprised

boy a tap, you know, I love to see new
teams get here. They've obviously the venue, they've even been
a high school that long compared to you know, some schools.

So that's gonna be an interesting matchup of D three
for sure.

All Right, So that is a four to thirty approximate
tip that at six forty five to end championship Saturday tonight,
Division two matchup Warren Lincoln, who knocked down Grandapp's Catholic Central,
and they'll take on Romulus Summit Academy North, the team
that we're familiar with a little bit. They were at
our jam at the Van a few years back and
just a fairly new school at that time, but really
coming on, they've got some talent, so you can check

that one as well. Let's go to the players to

about three and a half minutes away from the national
anthemy you're starting lives. But let's focus on the Follower
Eagles because before we talk about trying to Christian might
people might be familiar with. We've talked about their athleticism.
A lot of football players in the small school playing

basketball as well. But this is a team that has
been building for this year, building for this game, and
they are led by some outstanding talented the individuals.

You know, they've got multiple double digit scores. They are
led by Jacob Haffman, number four. He's the point guard.
He was the quarterback on their very successful football team.
I love his size, but you know their balance. He
averages twelve and a half. They've got Aaron Simon as
their two guard. He averages twelve point three. You know,
Asher Kegnish neck Kennick sch Neck. You know, he was

big for them in that semi final wins. Shot it
really well left handed. That's kind of been the theme
of our year in games. We've called the lefties. Poured
in from three Zill loves it Asher, Kate thirteen, I
like to call him Kate thirteen. Letters in the last name,
two are to pronounce Kate thirteen can really shoot it
from the left hand. And then you've got the other halfman,
Alex Happened a little bigger, more of a forward type player,
averaging eleven points per game. So they have those four

players averaging between eleven and twelve and a half and
then nobody else over four and a half. So they've
got kind of the four horsemen. When you talk about
the Foler Eagles, Yeah.

And the Hoffmans are cousins. They are not brothers. You'll
find out a lot of Fowler bt of cousins because
of so many family members that stay in that community.
You do have the Epkee brothers today, you also have
Balen cousins. So we'll have fun with that with a

third all time in MHSA high school basketball history. That's unbelievable. Yeah.
