Speaker 1 (00:00):
Max Chadwick is one of the great NFL and college
football analyst that joins us every single a few weeks
or so, and he's one of the best in the business.
At our friends at Pro Football Focus, they are busier
in the hall this time of year, so let's not
fill a buster too long. Max, How are things, Buddy?
Getting excited?

Speaker 2 (00:16):
I'm pumped, guys. Yeah, like you said, it's only a
couple of weeks away until the NFL drafts, one of
my favorite events of the year. It kind of combines
college football into the NFL, So I personally cannot wait
for a couple of weeks from now.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
It is like early Christmas. I mean, what is like
your favorite day on the football calendar. We talked during
the break. You're a big college basketball fan. Congrats to Florida.
Some people are more into it than others, but you're
a football guy, true intury. Is it the opening weeks
zero week one of college football? Is it opening day
for the NFL? Is it Draft Day? I mean, what

(00:48):
is it to you? What's your favorite of the the
NFL days or the college days?

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Oh, it's really tough. I probably go with Draft day. Honestly, Thursday,
first round of the Fell Draft is always so special
because you know, you get you get thirty two picks
and you get you see thirty two dreams come true,
which is always a very very cool thing I think,
uh to see in sports. And yeah, I kind of
dive headfirst into the draft almost all year, covering college

(01:14):
football year round, so it's really cool and seeing all
these scenarios play out. I don't you're wrong. I still
love watching games, obviously we all do. And you know,
opening opening week of the collegetball season is always special.
I personally love the day of the semifinals when both
semifinals were on for college football playoffs, another special day too,
out to the National Championship special and Super Bowl special
and all that. But I I my personal favorite is

(01:37):
the NFL Draft. I think that's my favorite event of
the whole year, and that that Thursday of the draft
is always extremely special to me.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
Next Chadwick Pro Football Focus. One of the rising stars
from an outlet that puts out of a one or
two a minute, it seems, and Max does in that
standing job. And to the point of some of the
rumors in scutt about out there right now about shood
ear Sanders Jackson Dark the New Orleans Saints have entered
the chad. Apparently you talked about this earlier on X
and you brought up a great point. And this is

(02:03):
why I really appreciate the work in detail you put
into it, because I remember Doug nus Meyer when he
played in the NFL and his son Garrett, who is
obviously going to be one of the top guys in
twenty twenty six Art Manning, grandson of Archie, as you right,
second best quarterback in Saints history, as you wrote there
in cap Hell, and it may be worth waiting until
they're in a healthier spot financially where they can take

(02:24):
advantage of a rookie quarterback contract. For those who don't
know much about what you're getting at here sort of
help us understand the development.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
Yeah, so I think there's a lot of people talk
about quarterback go one of the Saints number nine. I
certainly understand why. You know Derek Carr is not the
long term answer there. Spencer Ratlers have a long term
answer in New Orleans either. Now I have shore standards
QB one, it's by hair. I think he's just by
hair better than Cam Wore. So if he is available
at number nine overall and they do take him, I
would not hate it, Jackson dar I would not like

(02:55):
it all though they take him at number nine. I
think first of all, it's a big reach. And second
of all, I got to said in that tweet, I
don't think you know the Saints are in a position
right now financially where I mean, listen to, the most
valuable thing in probably sports is a rookie quarterback contract.
You have the most valuable player in all of sports
on a cost controlled contract for four or five years.

(03:16):
The Saints really can't take advantage. And usually when you
have that, you have plenty of other money to spend
in other positions and build an elite roster around a
rookie quarterback contract where you could hopefully compete for Super Bowls.
The Saints right now, or like I said in that tweet,
are in cap hell. I mean, they really don't have
any cap space right now.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
Never do they. In fact, they've never drafted a quarterback
in the first round in the history of their franchise.
They've never done it.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Yeah. Crazy, that's stat honestly, but I think so. I
think that goes up part into it right in the
Saints that they don't have any money right now, they
can't take advantage of a rookie quarterback deal. And then
alsoly it's not a great quarterback class. You look ahead
to next year, you have two guys and might be
first round picks, and Arch Manning and Garrett Nesmeyer, we
have clear familial ties to the New Orleans Saints, right

(04:03):
Like I said, Arch Manning is going to be I
think it's a superstar next year. And his granddad is
one of the greatest quarterbacks in the Saints hitsra I said,
probably second find Drew Brees. And then you have Garrett Neufsmeyer,
whose dad is the offensive coordinator for the team. Right
so I'm sure Nuthmeyer, I'm sure Doug Nussmeyer is looking
at Kellen Moore than the head coach right now. It's like, hey,
why don't we wait a couple of years and let

(04:25):
me say I can get my son to come in here,
and how cool it would be for offensive coordator to
be coaching his son in the NFL. And it's not
nepotism really either, because Garrett, he said, is absolutely like
a first round caliber prospects probably next year as well.
So I find it hard to believe they're gonna take
one this year. I think they might wait till next
year to take one.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Who cares if it's Nefo or not. You're good enough,
you're not good enough. We see it every year in
the NFL. And I heard somebody on it was with
Pat Kerwin and Jim Miller on moving the chains. This guy,
I think he was three sheets to win, called in.
It was like, now listen, like Newsmeyer, the new Smeyer.
I remember we play with you, Jimmy, and like, is
it is tampering? Right? If Garrett goes there and they

(05:04):
all point, and you know, Pat Kuran's like, no, the
hell you talking about this tampering? It's different, It's unique,
but not so dissimilar to what I guess in a
certain way. Archie took control of things in that negotiation
in two thousand and four and said, or two thousand
and three, maybe was it. Now, we're gonna go ahead
and go over to New York. Let's keep talking about

(05:25):
this year's draft. Is we do have cam Ward locked
and loaded to the Titans. Do you do you have
any reasona believe that will change? No?

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Absolutely not. They canceled their workouts with doors Standers and
Travis Hunter, who were two other guys. I think they
really consider it number one overall. And you know, seeing
that they sense pretty much the entire brass to camp
Moore's prote and they seem to really get along very
well at his prode. It seems like they're pretty much
sharp being this one. And cam Ward I think is

(05:55):
almost almost a lock to be a TENSI tight end
a couple of weeks.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
All right, Mac, I've got a little bit of a
question for I guess the Steelers. I keep hearing this
narrative and I feel like it's died down here recently,
but that shad door Sanders could be sliding and falling
down to the Pittsburgh Steelers. It's a twenty first overall pick.
Just your take on that one. Is it realistic at all?
Or is that just buzz that we hear from It's

(06:19):
just draft buzz. And secondly, the thing that you look for,
I guess when it comes to drafting a quarterback that
teams are always after. Obviously you want a franchise quarterback,
but it's like, oh, we need a generational prospect. We
need a guy that's going to come in and change
this franchise and Pittsburgh Steels has been a little bit
of quarterback hell the past couple of years since Ben Roethlisberger.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
Has like, Yeah, the generational cliff starts to happen around
fourteen in this draft. I think, personally, so is it
if you're the Pittsburgh Steelers and shad Door Sanders falls there,
and do you take a shad Door Sanders or do
you wait until next year where it seems like the
quarterback class is going to be better.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
You could print that card in if you're the Steelers,
I think if he's there at number twenty one overall,
and I pouted out to the mock drafts recently where
he actually is there at number twenty one overall, and
that is a no brainer pick for the pick first Steelers.
I think. I think Aaron Rodgers will sign with the
Steelers very soon. It sounds like there that's gonna happen soon.
But you have to door standers sitting behind Aaron Rodgers
who's already forty years old. It's not like he's a
long term answer at quarterback. And the thing with the Steelers,

(07:18):
and you make a good point like, oh, maybe you
could wait another year or so. Well, the problem with
the Steelers is they're too good, right, They're always going
to be skicking around this range, and in that respect,
you're going to get a great quarterback prospect in the
twenties when they're always going to be well playoff caliber.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
Team because you're right. But at some point you gotta
do what teams do occasionally, and then Art's got to
get off the counts and say, Okay, maybe we can
make a trade up, just once, maybe we have to
make a move. But so far they haven't done it.
A big bus fellow too much on Art, I don't
know if you would. Big Ben fell in their lap.
He fell a little bit, and then they thought Pickett
was two point zero. He's a hometown guy, and it

(07:53):
turns out the hands were a little too small, and
then you just didn't play up the level. I'm a
little bit with you there, max On on Sanders, like,
I keep looking at where he might fall. There is
that chunk of teams and you know where they are
right there.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
It's sort of in the second tier of the draft
order barring trades, where you kind of get the sense that, yeah,
anything can happen, but no that's probably not gonna happen
for a quarterback there. I look at the Rams. I mean,
maybe I'm out of my mind, but the Rams seem
like a team. If she your door does fall that far,
I'm not sure if he will. But look, I'm hearing
a lot of opinions about where Sanders may go. I'm

(08:27):
hearing he should be a top three guy and he
the second round. Second round seems ridiculous. Yeah, and mill
Row into the first and then Dart Tyler shuck Mary Kay,
Mary Kay Cabins remember her? Did you hear this? Max
or Mary Kay said they got a draft or was
it they should take Shad Door takes your door and
trade back in the first and take Shucked Tyler shuck. Well, like,

(08:49):
I'm like, Mary Kay, are you having a bloody Mary
little early today?

Speaker 3 (08:52):
On?

Speaker 1 (08:53):
What about Rams? And Shootoor? Would that? Would that make sense?
Will he fall that far?

Speaker 2 (08:57):
Do you think?

Speaker 3 (08:58):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (08:59):
Yeah, I think if he's there, I would take him.
I think, you know, Matthew Stafford, you know he was
very close to leaving the Rams this year, right, so
I think they'd be looking for a future answer a
quarterback and Shure Standers wo certainly fit that billing. But
like I said, I mean, if he's there at number
twenty one overall, I mean I've heard rumors the Steeers
are looking at Jalen Milroe or Jackson Dart in the
first round. If sure Sanders is there, and that to
me is a reach. Doors Sanders is absolutely not a

(09:21):
reach at number twenty. In fact, you're getting a steal
if you get Shud doors Standers number twenty one. Like
I said, he's my number one quarterback in the draft.
I think that'd be a terrific pick for Pittsburgh, and
I think that's their dream scenario. And honestly, if he
starts slipping into the teams like he might not draft night,
I think the Stewers should be looking to trade up
to make sure they get to Dors Sanders instead of
trying to wait and seeing if he falls to them

(09:42):
and number twenty one overall. Yeah, like I said that
that is the dream scenario for Pittsburgh, I think is
for shoud door Standers to fall into their lap.

Speaker 1 (09:49):
Max. A lot of it relies upon environment where you land.
We know that if you're not named Ward Sanders, obviously
Dart or or the fourth who would be three Millro
Milro probably who of the remainders would be most likely
in your mind to work himself into a situation where

(10:09):
one day, maybe not right away, did maybe by a year,
one year, two year, three could be a reliable, if
not maybe pro Bowl starter. We see it from time
to time. Is it Dylan Gabriel? Is there just too
much to the height concerns? Could it be Will Howard?
Is it a Tyler shuck? Is there a guy behind
that first wave that catches your eye?

Speaker 2 (10:28):
Yeah, I'll just point it out by saying right now,
I don't think there are two. There are more than
two starting caliber quarterbacks in this drafted than cam Ward
and Trebor Sanders. I think are the only two guys
that will end up being long term starters in the NFL.
But if I had to go with another guy after
those first four you mentioned of the standers, Ward Darton Milrow,
I would probably put Dylan Gabriel in that mix. And
he's a very smart, accurate quarterback. The tools aren't the

(10:52):
best with him. He mentioned the height and the size
and great either, but like I said before, he's very
smart and accurate signal caller. Should be a long term
backup not the probably a potential coach in the future
as well. I think the Kellen Moore comparisons as kind
of the smaller left handed quarterback who's brilliant and then
it ends up being now he's the head coach in
the NFL. That might be the career art that we
see for dyl Gabriel. How smart of a kid I

(11:13):
think that guy is. And then also I like Kyle
McCord a lot out of Syracuse. Well, I think he
kind of really transformed his play from what he was
at Ohio State. At Ohio State, he kind of played
a very much not to lose because he knew the
roster was so talented around him. If they lost the
game was probably because of him. So he was a
very very conservative quarterback at Ohio State. He goes to Syracuse,

(11:35):
he turned into the ultimate gunslinger at Syracuse and kind
of shows off that top end arm talent that made
him a five star recrew coming out of high school.
I like Kyle McCord. I think it's some rock party
some maybe Baker Mayfield if he wasn't as physically talented
to his game, So I think that's another guy too.
I'm a big fan and I like Will Howard two
of this draft. But like I said, I think all

(11:56):
those guys just mentioned are probably long term backups in
the NFL. The only two that I think are going
to be starters or cam Ward Andre Door Sanders.

Speaker 1 (12:03):
What do you make of the Joe Milton trade. I
don't think there's a lot to it to get like
hyped up about, but it's the Cowboys, and whenever they
make you know, a little bit of Haye, it's it's
worth talking about. You know, you look at the arm talent.
They use that term a lot, and we talk about
the fact that an eighty yard throw is not always
necessary in this game, but there are real tools there

(12:23):
to be refined and to be worked on. Did you
like the trade because I personally didn't think it was
as bad as some of Jerry's other moves in that
they didn't give up a whole lot and I don't
really know what the Patriots hurry was. But you're analysis
on Joe Milton getting.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
Dough, Yeah, I thought it was interesting. I'm not one
of the people that thinks Joe Millon can become a
starting quarterback in the NFL. I think a lot of people,
you know, you're kind of. I think the Joe Millan
roarshock test is pretty interesting. It looks like, Okay, who
who watches college football?

Speaker 1 (12:53):
Who doesn't watch college football?

Speaker 2 (12:55):
That's probably you know, how how you feel about Joe
Millon is probably, you know, kind of a good indicator
of whether or not you really.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
Want to call it. But Max, he threw at any
yards on his knees, Kyle Boller, that's how you know.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
Man, he's one of those physically talented quarterbacks that we
have in the NFL. Has no doubt about that. And
that one game played this past year. Yeah, that one
game played this past year was really really impressive. But
I don't think this guy is going to be a
starting quarterback in the NFL despite his physical tools. I
think there's just so much in terms of mental processing,
accuracy is all over the place of that guy. I

(13:31):
don't think he's a long term starter in the NFL.
So I didn't hate to trade a fifth round pick
because not not that much in the grand scheme of things.
But I'm not one of the people that thinks Joe
Millen is maybe a long term answer for Dallas at
the quarterback position.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
Well, I need to know this now. Because I don't
know how he ended up here, but Rocker chat GPT
has turned me into an image of the Browns coach,
and it's revealing. It's very scary, looks just like me,
and I don't. I don't hate the Browns, but I'm
not really wild about being them on Madden. But I
gotta figure some things out, including Kirk Cousins. You see
it happening.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
Yeah, maybe I think they almost have to. I mean
because right now you have Kenny Pickett, you're starting quarterback,
and you're probably not taking Trabert Standers a number two overall.
From everything I've heard, it sounds like it's down to
Travis Hunter and Abdul Carter right now. So Kirk Cousins,
maybe the Browns. What I could also see the Browns
doing is taking Jackson Dart or jayaln Milroe in the
second round. They have a thirty third overall pick in

(14:26):
the draft two, so maybe the Browns take him there
at a quarterback there, or even move up into the
first round and take a quarterback to the secure the
fifth year option. But yeah, with the kirk Cousins connections
to Kevin Stefanci, that makes a lot of sense. It's
gonna be interesting with all the cap situation with them
because they'd have they would have two of the most
expensive quarterbacks in the NFL on their roster, Kirkus and

(14:46):
DeShawn Watson, so that'll be interesting. I kinda I think
it's possible. I do think though they're probably that thirty
third overall pick. If I'm really looking at a guy
like Jackson Dart or Jaln Milrow as as a guy
that they would probably be prior toz maybe even later
on in the draft, guy like will Howard keep him
in the state of Ohio maybe like something like that.
But yeah, I think Kirkus is definitely an option. Or

(15:08):
maybe they take a rookie quarterback and see how they
do next year and be bottom out next year and
maybe got Arch Manning or someone else next year.

Speaker 1 (15:15):
Bottoming Out that's a book that needs to be read
by the tom And administration. All right, Rooney, get the
book today. Bottoming Out by Jimmy Assm. Yeah, they're an
odd bunch. I started my franchise date we do an
off season franchise, my son and I because we get bored.
It's the best time of year to dig back into
it like I said in the Browns, and I ended
up with a haul I traded first of all, Hunter

(15:36):
went number one overall, so obviously PFF's not doing their
draft engineering. And then I'm sitting there at number two thinking, Okay,
what do you got for me? And I go to
the trade offers docket and about twenty one teams have
offered me trades. The most appealing was the Colts, who
went reverse Ricky Williams and just offered me the entire

(15:59):
planet four forers. I said, thank you very much, and
I got mea will Howard in the third round. So
I mean, well, you never know in this league.

Speaker 2 (16:06):
Man.

Speaker 1 (16:06):
I think Ward's pretty safe in one. But we'll see
what Hunter does. We'll see what some of these game
Cocks guys like em and Warre and Sanders, and Clemson's
got a few guys too. Max. Give us a quick
plug on what we're doing here before the draft with
you and Dalton in the game. We want to hear
all about it.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
Yeah, absolutely so. Dawn and I host the PFF College
Football Show. You could find it on YouTube or anywhere
you get podcast. Actually, we're doing a very very fun
mock draft next week. We're doing a mock draft if
everybody in college football was eligible, meaning Arline, Smith, arch Manning,
DJ Lagway and Ward, the guys this year, guys next year,
even the guys the year after that. They're all eligible

(16:44):
to be picked in a mock draft. And we're doing that.
It's kind of a college football version of a NFL
mock draft, and we're doing I'm mary some about that
next week, so make sure you guys. It's scardup toowns.
You don't miss that. And you can follow me on
Twitter at CFB Max Chatwick as well, and all my
articles live at PFF dot com too.

Speaker 1 (16:58):
Max. That's a great idea because we're running out of you.
We did an all offensive one, we did all skilled players.
I think we did all defense, all green jerseys, yeah, everything.
We're doing a Frankenstein draft today. We're taking apart all
the parts of the body and saying, what's the perfect prospect.
We'll tune into that. Man, that's a good one. It's
instructive to tell Dalton we said, hey in the whole
gang up there at PFF and we'll talk after the draft.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
Bude, Thank you guys, I really appreciate you.
