From the horse capital of the world, It's Horsetails with
ursul Ellis. We'll talk about the horses, the people, and
the history of the thoroughbred industry.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Hold away any secretary of that.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
What's the flight two and a half lets now line
from Kentucky's bluegrass region. Here's Ursul.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Good morning everyone, And at finally we're getting some really
nice weather. It's sun shining out there, the dandelions going.
They'll think you'll go overnight. You know that amazing.
Speaker 5 (04:05):
It's a phenomenal, phenomenal thing.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Yeah, this is John Nicholson talking now. Yeah. They I
believe if you stayed up at night and said out
there you could watch them grow. I think you could.
It's just it's magic. Yeah, pop up, all right. And
we were also let's see what was I going to
(04:30):
talk about? Oh, the feature of to day out at
at Keenland is, as they say incorrectly, the Ben l handicap.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
Ben Ally or ben Alley.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
It kind of depends where you're from, right, depends where
you're from. We were talking about that earlier. Were doing
the show at it Admiration Secretary's office one time out
at Keenland, and I was sitting there during the show
and I said, well, they're running the belly ally and
the guy, some some guy went by says that's Ben Ali.
(05:09):
Then I said you you sure as Helldding from Lexington.
Speaker 5 (05:14):
Used to have a Ben out O Theater yeah, and
there's that guy's probably from Versailles.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Yeah yeah, anyway, anyway, that's uh, it's a historic raze.
So it goes way back. One of the first one,
one of the first one run nineteen thirty seven, so it.
Speaker 5 (05:35):
Was original to Keenland when Keenland.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Right at the beginning, Yeah, yeah, yeah, I sure was.
It was been one by not a nicer. I was
looking up a horse that I knew very well. I
was going I went through here looking at this shy
guy one in nineteen forty nine. I knew him and
very very well.
Speaker 5 (05:58):
How do you know him?
Speaker 3 (05:59):
Dixie and Bread? Okay, yeah, okay, But on one thing
I didn't know about him. I look, I pulled his
up old past performances. He ran twenty one times, was
never out of the money, never, never out of the money.
Speaker 5 (06:12):
Isn't that something? Well that would be a sure bet.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (06:15):
I'd been across the board every ding.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
It was the one game little horse they were in
him down at and the stakes raced down at church Off.
Forget the name of the stakes I did. I was
too damn lazy to look it up. But he was
in against an entry from km ed uh armed, oh, armed, right,
and Armed and uh it was what was the other
(06:39):
horse now? I think it was fervert. It was fervid. Anyway,
Armed admitted it was a little over his peak at
that time. But our Carol was riding fervd and and
shot guy went to the front like as was his
(07:01):
wont to do. He was ahead and Arm was pushing him.
He was left on him and Armed had he gave
it up. But the butt the head of the first turn,
the second turn, you know his. And here came our
Carrol riding further and he got up right next to
(07:22):
h shy guy, and they dogged the head and head
the entire length of that stretch, and he could never
get by him. Our Carrot came back and threw his
whip down and says, that's the dog in this little
son of a bitch I've ever seen.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Whatever happened to him, who.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
Said, shy guy, I don't know. You know, I've forgot
I was the way I was in the military going
overseas at that time. But anyway, but he was game little.
I remember the one time they brought him home and
(08:04):
I was working during the summer at Dixiana and Dad says,
take him out and graze him. I took him out
and was grazing him, and he had me up and
down that shank like a yo yo. I'll tell you
he was. He was something else.
Speaker 5 (08:22):
He wasn't me.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
He was just full of himself. You know what a
tough little horse he was? What good would what?
Speaker 5 (08:29):
What was the greatest Dixiana horse in your opinion?
Speaker 2 (08:34):
You know?
Speaker 3 (08:34):
They were in third third? They were in second and
three derbys? Really yeah, I couldn't win it, but they
were in Yeah, who's been Sleepall?
Speaker 5 (08:44):
Spy Song and sub Fleet? Okay what years?
Speaker 3 (08:50):
Sleep All were in second to twenty grand I did
to get your beat?
Speaker 5 (08:55):
That's twenty twenty, nineteen thirty one.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Yeah, I remember that.
Speaker 5 (08:58):
Well, yeah you were Yeah, got right out of the
the womb and went right to the races, right.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
Yeah, they were in a little books. But I heard
my mother hord. Yeah, but I wasn't quite bored yet.
Speaker 5 (09:17):
You remember, I remember.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
I remember that. And then uh, sub fleet got beat
by who they'll beat him? I can I can't remember,
but he was second any of the horse.
Speaker 5 (09:38):
Sub fleet was at a count fleet or he was? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (09:43):
What what was the best Philly?
Speaker 3 (09:48):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (09:49):
Madam Haara was she in retrospect better than the three
that ran second in the derby.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
Matt, Yeah, she was. She went and the herby twos
here and forth. The cavalcade set all the pace.
Speaker 5 (10:04):
But you know she went, she went right to the front.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
You couldn't raid her. And she was temperamental anyway, always yeah,
and uh some of that hasting blood came out.
Speaker 5 (10:17):
And she wasn't never mean right.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
Never, but she was temperamental. And she went to the front.
The horse named Sergeant Burne Hooker. They went head and
head and he killed. She killed Sergeant Burne here in
last Okay, and she got tired and run fourth. And
that was Cavalcade. That was a hell of a nice field. Yeah,
(10:41):
she beat Discovery and the breeder's fortuity. Uh, Mada Herod
did was run down at Letonia at that time.
Speaker 5 (10:50):
Was that. Uh they didn't want to run her in
the ylks, pardon, they didn't want to run her in
the oaks, in the Kentucky oaks. And she didn't run
in the oaks, she said, the just no. The derby
they were in they were in far Star in it
which was a stableway, and far Star had won d
Arlington pratuity, beating coats and beat matdi Hair that day
(11:10):
because Matt got in a fight.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
With the assistant starters down.
Speaker 5 (11:14):
There, which she was wont to do.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
And uh, they had mister Fisher and was down there,
and the trainer of course and everything, and they were
all watching, watching Madahara, and she was gonna know. They
didn't know they'd wanted till till they took far Star
into the Winter Circle. That was a hell of a cross.
They had three three stakes went in Phillies. Like my
(11:39):
dad says, it was a Philly year, you know, definitely
that was the year I was born too. Yeah, he
knew what he was talking about. But anyway, they've had
some good horses when that thing, I looked them up.
Uh the first one, Count Morrish, who came in was
(12:04):
at but recount out of Nellie Morris. I don't know
if you remember Nallie Morris or no, if she won
the nineteen twenty four Preakers beating transmuting and a son
of fair player of trying to but I can't remember
which one it was now it was.
Speaker 5 (12:22):
I got some notes over here, and I'm going to
the Preaknus this year. It's and it's historic because it'll
be the last Preakness at the current Pimlico. As soon
as this is over, they're gonna rip Pimlico totally down. Yeah,
and so this is a nostalgic Pimlico. I know a
(12:43):
lot of people think that's one of the best things
that ever happened, is getting rid of tear that track down.
But it's kind of sad.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (12:50):
You know guy from.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
There who was a sports guy on the radio television,
Tyler's from Maryland.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
Oh, they named all those stakes after him.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
They've run a he died, didn't he Yeah, Yeah, and
he loved Maryland racing.
Speaker 5 (13:12):
Well, I'll tell you Maryland Racing is coming back. That's
the good The good deal the Stronics First Racing, they
made a deal where they essentially have given Pimlico to
the State of Maryland. The State of Maryland's putting in
about four hundred to five hundred million dollars into Pimlico
(13:36):
and to building changing i think Laurel to a training
track and really funding Maryland racing for the first time
in a long time. And so Maryland Racing's got a
bright future in the midst of all this doom and gloom.
On other things. Maryland Racing's looking looking good. Belmont Park's
(13:59):
getting a billion dollars or some crazy number like that,
a rebuilt Belmont Park. Kentucky racing has never been stronger
as far as the purses go anyway. So I'm trying
to be optimistic here in springtime with easter coming up,
you know, we need to have good news.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
Did you see they were talking about what's going to
happen to go stream, they may close Indus Santa said,
ain't going to happen.
Speaker 5 (14:26):
That's right, and I was that was my next piece
of good news. So good for politics aside, good for
Governor DeSantis. He is on the right side of that issue.
And at the darkest hour he came through. And I
want to give a plug to our old friend Damon
there here, the now former senator from Scott County and
(14:47):
from this region, who did so much for racing in Kentucky.
They deployed him down there as a lobbyist, and I
suspect his invisible hand was present, maybe helping persuade Governor
De Santa's about that whole issue. Uh and uh Micropoli
(15:07):
was involved in. He made sure that Governor De Santas
knew our position as well. So there's you know, there's
there's in the midst of troublesome news, there's a lot
of good news. Now we got to figure out California
and I'll you two have to figure that out. I can't.
(15:28):
That's above my pay grade.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
I don't.
Speaker 5 (15:30):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (15:32):
I don't know why they can't have ration up in
northern California. They it seems like everybody's fading it.
Speaker 5 (15:38):
Yeah, and I don't. I don't understand that. It's almost
like two different states or something. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
Uh, Golden Gate, I love Golden Gate. I used to
go to really was in the service. I was stationed
up there was it nice? Oh yeah, sit right on
the bay. You could look right out and see Alcatra.
Oh wow, yeah, and uh it's right on the bay.
You know. The Baby Ridge was what was uh where
(16:06):
I was right in the middle of it was what
to go t I treasure That's where I was stationed.
Speaker 5 (16:12):
Okay, not at Alcatraz. You weren't at Alcatraz, were travel
I want to make sure I escaped, Okay, I want
to make sure that was clear.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
What damon sayers he retired.
Speaker 5 (16:23):
Oh, he's enjoyed well, retired from from active politics, although
you know, are you really ever? So he he's no
longer the you know, the Senator and the majority leader
or floor leader that he was in Kentucky for all
those years. Now he does political things like what he
did in Florida, which was Carlo Valquarezza hired him along
(16:49):
with some other people to go down there and try
to help with that Florida situation, and I think he
did effectively. But he's also racing, and I think Damon's
just joined joined the game right now, isn't that funny.
I remember when he first started worked for the breeders
Cup Well he did.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
That's when.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
That's when it before he was elected to anything, he was,
he was doing that. So he's from the horse world.
He's a was horse crazy as a young person. And
he's a great friend of the Kentucky Horse Park by
the way too for.
Speaker 3 (17:25):
All those years.
Speaker 5 (17:26):
So Damon has done done a lot of good things
for our for our business. But he posted something on
Facebook this week where he said I'm not embarrassed and
he just showed him winning I think a horse that
he totally owned. I think I'm not don't quote me
on that. But his horse won, and he was ecstatic
(17:48):
and got the you know, winter circle, the whole thing.
I'm sure he's been in the winter circle a lot,
but not when you have your own horse. You don't
have nothing like it, nothing like it. And he was
jumping up and down and turning circles and hugging everybody.
And he posted on there, I'm not embarrassed about how
I acted. So good for him.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
Yeah, it's fun.
Speaker 5 (18:06):
Good, good for him.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
We never went a steak, so did we. We've read
a couple of steaks winners and.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
A good steak. They were good enough to sell.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
But anyway, any kind of race, you know, it.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Was Yeah, have you seen pictures of river downs or
whenever the belt era? No, the water was up to
the outside rail, right.
Speaker 5 (18:30):
Rail. Oh my goodness, I mean it looked like it.
Speaker 6 (18:35):
Although really yeah, they.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
Had to roll out to the outside rail to take
a picture where you can see much water outside rail.
And there was the river.
Speaker 5 (18:54):
My grandfather and my great uncle would tell stories about
river downs and uh, and I've never even had a
chance to go there.
Speaker 3 (19:03):
Oh it was fun place to go.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
That's broad worst you ever tasted.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
Yeah, we one. We used to go up out. We
had river horses, you know, yeah, we one racing up there.
Speaker 5 (19:15):
Got met this guy.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
About a year ago that was from Ohio and he
was in charge of it. Was a big wheel, you know,
all these tracks up there. He was, you know, and uh,
I tell you what I said I got. I got
a bone to pick with you about that. And he said, well,
what is it that I said to put a horse?
(19:41):
And entered the horse in up at river Down's one
time in a grass race.
Speaker 5 (19:48):
And they took it.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
Off the grass and I called up. I said I
want to scratch and they said what do you What
are you scratching for? And I says, uh, I want
to run him on the grass. He says, well, you
can't do that. He says, you have to vet him out.
I says, you mean I have to get him. I
(20:11):
have to lie, says this horse sound than I am.
Speaker 5 (20:14):
I have to lie about.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
It to the to the stewards, you know. And he says,
if you won't ask, you're going to have to. And
I says, now. He says, I don't know what you
people are doing up there, but somebody goes to the
bathroom on the eighth pole, you take it off the grass. Yeah,
and they said that'll cost you fifty dollars and I said, fine,
(20:38):
but I ain't coming.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
Is that the one then that they had a big
storm and knocked over the lights.
Speaker 3 (20:47):
No, that was that was uh, that was turf wake oh.
Speaker 2 (20:50):
Okay, And they got real mad at him because he
with So you know.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
We had a warning, you know, high profile animals, I
mean vehicles stay off the highway, you know. So we
called up and we told them, why, yeah, well you're
going to lose your dates. You know, at that time,
you had you know, you had to have a date
to get in, okay, normally ended up entering three or
(21:18):
four times and finally on the third time you get in.
Speaker 5 (21:23):
And as well the little we just had to but.
Speaker 3 (21:25):
I'd rather that didn't lose my behind.
Speaker 5 (21:27):
And I'm sure you.
Speaker 3 (21:31):
Well that happened that the storm hit up there and
it blew a roof off of barn up there, blue
down eight pole, I mean, everything was you know, their.
Speaker 2 (21:41):
Lights went down.
Speaker 3 (21:43):
We called back up by the jacket called back up,
said we'll still lose a date, and it said, no,
you didn't.
Speaker 5 (21:48):
Lose that's that's uh, it's not the case. Now, surely
that if you want to scratch your horse that you
have to have a vet proof that it's the horse
is on sound. Can't you just scratch off off of
a turf race going to dirtys But back at that time,
(22:08):
back at that time, But that wouldn't be the case today,
surely not.
Speaker 3 (22:11):
Man.
Speaker 7 (22:12):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (22:14):
That was the only time I ever had a ruling
against Oh no, neither. We had the horses test positive
for nicotine.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (22:22):
Yeah, and it took a person away from me.
Speaker 5 (22:24):
Oh that's still they still talk about that scandal.
Speaker 3 (22:26):
I didn't even know he to.
Speaker 5 (22:31):
Yeah, maybe he was smoking.
Speaker 2 (22:38):
Well, it was so stupid. They said it would be
less than a tablespoonful. And we raised tobacco at that
time out of Homewood, and you know, the horse was surrounded.
But when he did somebody chewed in the receiving barn
in that stone. That's what it was.
Speaker 3 (23:01):
We just were, you know, and they had they said
it had to be you know, he said it had
to be within what there was hours because it was
a minute matter of you know of he ingested it
within hours. And I said, well he you know, he'd
been standing in that stole up at your place for
(23:22):
three hours.
Speaker 2 (23:23):
Yeah, it was funny. We were walking back to the barn.
A friend of ours from here came by. He said,
what did they do? Ursul said, they took the purse
and he took a few more steps. He said, you
want right? Ursel said, yeah, how much did you give him?
Speaker 3 (23:48):
So he took the horse back down? They didn't call
me forever. It was like three weeks later and the
Stewarts had never called me. I guess they didn't know
what the hell to do with me.
Speaker 2 (23:59):
And we went back up and he won.
Speaker 5 (24:04):
We went back up.
Speaker 3 (24:05):
I had entered him for none winters or two now,
you know, non winners.
Speaker 5 (24:09):
Of the race other than yeah, like, oh yeah, one
of those.
Speaker 3 (24:13):
And put him in and we went up for and
he won. And uh, I guess everybody else that I
knew about it, because even the track photographer walked in said,
but let me take a picture of the hero horse.
Speaker 2 (24:29):
Is that the one where Herb John's He.
Speaker 3 (24:31):
Told Herb, yeah, the Stewarts called me up. That's when
the Stewarts were up at the top of the Grandstanding. Know,
I went up the elevator. You know, Herb was a
good friend of mine, and he was I knew he
was waiting for me down there, and I came on
(24:54):
the elevator. I was all already.
Speaker 5 (24:56):
For me, he says her. So what they do, what
they do, said Herb.
Speaker 3 (25:00):
I told him that, you said there were a bunch
of no good sons of bitches. Oh my god, it
was almost worth getting in qualifies.
Speaker 7 (25:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (25:12):
Oh god. Herbert was African American. He turned whiter than me. Oh,
he was one of my best friends. He what a
wonderful guy he was.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
Yeah, he died way too centers.
Speaker 5 (25:29):
Yes, he died that this passed away at your age.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
He was. I used to tease him. No, he he
was January May, January fold and I was maybe so,
I told him.
Speaker 5 (25:43):
Always used to teach him about how much older he
was in me.
Speaker 3 (25:47):
Yeah, good horsemen. Yeah, one of the best I've ever seen.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
One of his best stories was so he was starting out.
He flew up to New York, some same trainer and
all that kind of stuff and started working for him.
And uh, one day the guy's wife, the trainer's mother's
who it was, came over and said, it's today a
good day. Oh I know, No, no, no, not today mom.
(26:19):
So he thought, well, you know, he told his mom.
So he didn't bet either in the horse one and
paid a fortune. He said, I knew anybody that would
stiff his mother wouldn't have any problems stiff in me.
He said, I got on that plane and came right
back home.
Speaker 3 (26:38):
That was funny he.
Speaker 5 (26:42):
Did. He yeah, oh, for a long time.
Speaker 6 (26:44):
He won.
Speaker 5 (26:45):
When was lieutenant.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
Governor, he aimed this Philly for the lieutenant governor's state.
Speaker 5 (26:53):
Oh how about that?
Speaker 2 (26:55):
And that cool? Yeah, that was fun.
Speaker 5 (26:59):
It was he trained at night?
Speaker 2 (27:01):
Was that by my land by sea?
Speaker 3 (27:03):
By Land by sea? And very wanted to sell her.
Somebody that offered him seventy five thousand. He was going
to sell them bourbon. Herbs's don't do that, he said,
she's worth more than that. So he wanted a steak
with it, and he ended up getting three or four
hundred thousand farm.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
Yeah, is that right?
Speaker 5 (27:24):
Wow?
Speaker 3 (27:25):
Herb was a great horseman. Yeah, I loved her. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
Oh, I'll tell you another one he won. That was great.
Speaker 3 (27:34):
Oh yeah, but what was.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
The singing group?
Speaker 5 (27:37):
The three girl Supreme Supremes.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
The Supremes. He went all the way to Detroit to
win the Supreme Steak.
Speaker 3 (27:47):
Ohh and he did, and.
Speaker 2 (27:50):
He and the Supremes went out for days, and he
said when it was over he was broke.
Speaker 3 (27:55):
But it.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
Isn't that funny. I mean he could aim a horse
like that.
Speaker 6 (28:01):
That was just astonished.
Speaker 5 (28:04):
He had a great sense of him.
Speaker 3 (28:06):
We went out there. Used to be a place over
here on Brin Station Road where we'd get would buy
our hay, and we had he had We had barn
stalls together and barned fifteen down here. And I noticed
that our hay was kind of disappearing a little bit.
Speaker 5 (28:27):
Wow, and uh.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
I walked around and I looked at this guy's hey
rack who was sublists at least two saws down there,
and I said. I came back around and I said, herb,
take a shack and look at that hey down there,
and I said, see if you think it's our hete

I couldn't find it. So I found yours. So I
called and you said, well, if he won't come over
(30:54):
to the fence for oh, missus pastures or something wrong,
that's right. I couldn't tell he had so much mud
on him, because you know, and then you call the
guys to guys.
Speaker 5 (31:08):
Or yeah, I called. I called Antonio and and our
farm people and and Marissa got involved and we called
our good friends Rudin Riddle right away and they were
there in no time. And uh, I think everything turned
out all right.
Speaker 2 (31:25):
Oh it's great. Yeah, yeah, they turned that to be
thrush right. I thought it right front. Might have ed.
Speaker 5 (31:35):
Like an absess or something. That's what my first thought was,
an absess something just to think, not just to not
want to move. Uh. And you can just imagine sitting
there looking at you ready and it's not coming.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
Yeah. He was as far away from me as the
other side of the car. And there I am with
missus pastures rattling the bag.
Speaker 5 (31:57):
Oh we know how missus pastors and they don't come
from miss pastors and that's big troubles.

and the Great one Whitney at Saratoga, the Grade two
Oakland Handicap, the Great two Louisiana Derby, the Grade two
Risen Star, the Grade three LA Comp, the Fifth Season Sax,
the Essex Handicap, and the Park's Dirt Mouth. Silver State
had Grade one class. He was a dead game and
he was consistent. That's about all you may is for horse.
A grand individual, he sold for four hundred and fifty
(32:59):
thousd dollars is the yearlings and by the way, first
Corptos buy him sold for three hundred and thirty five
thousand and two hundred and seventy five thousand earlier this
week at the OBS Spring Sale. So he sirned good

opened the Clayward Agency and he's still doing business down
in Bourbon County. Goodness, he was a fine gentlemen. I
guess dead. They came over for dinner. It brought and
brought the dinner one time and came over so I
(34:28):
got to meet him. I was just a little poop
at the time, but I remember anyway, that was back
in over ninety years ago. I can vouch for that. Anyway,
he was very successful because begin with he gave you
great service and he knew what he was doing. And
those qualities are still carried on as we speak. Whatever
(34:51):
you insurance needs are, especially if it pertains to the horse,
the professionals over the Claywar Agency or in a great
position give you a BES coverage at the best price
av aible you need to give. Call to shack Parish

Superior horsemen out there, and you need to get in
touch with Shack about that too. And let me give
you the website. It's Indian Creek ky dot com Indian
Creek ky dot com and that's Shack at eight five,

Speaker 4 (36:06):
Okay, now back to the Thoroughbred Training Center and Ursul ellis.
Speaker 2 (36:14):
I want to do some of that stuff taking wait minute,
I want to tell one more story on you. When
you were real little, they had somebody come over to
see his father and they were in the front room
and waiting on him to show up, you know, wait
on his Paul and him were discussing among themselves, wonder
(36:35):
where the whiskey is and they didn't see any. Well
maybe he doesn't have any. And little Ursul boy they call,
ain't got out and Paul's got plenty of whiskey, opened
up the secret whatever was pulled out the whiskey.
Speaker 5 (36:52):
So we've got that bookcase still.
Speaker 3 (36:56):
He would put it, take some books out, put the
bottle behind the books, put the books back.
Speaker 5 (37:01):
I've got plenty of whisky.
Speaker 2 (37:03):
You dumbells, you know, and now I thought.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
That, I guess you didn't want my older sister she
was five years old, five years older than me or
me getting into the whisky here. Anyway, he's out of
our region, out of sight.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
Those people, people on those days just kind of didn't
let it sit.
Speaker 5 (37:20):
Out like well, it was pro prohibition was just ending,
that's right. Yeah, prohibition didn't end till until technically that
was probably an illegal bottle of wish. You're going to
be perfectly technical.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
About it, Paul's got so anyway, what were you?
Speaker 5 (37:42):
Yeah, we have some more. Yeah, in addition to the
wonderful thing at Total Vine today, coming up, uh at
Preston Green's Senior Living, which is which is really cool.
So what's Preston Preston Greens. Well, it's a retire community,
very nice retirement community, very close to Hamburg over there
(38:04):
on that Man of War exit. But the reason they
named it Preston Green is because that's where Preston Madden's
putting Green was. Oh yeah, and so that's what that's
why it's called that. And they have a really they
have a fun uh kind of derby event. It's you know,
(38:24):
a silent auction. But they do these hand crafted little
horses where all the residents compete on the on the
most painted, the kind of coolest. It's a takeoff on
the on the big painted horses that we've had here,
the horse Mania thing. Oh yeah, and and it's a
big it's fun. They have music and uh lots you know,
(38:47):
lots of lots of drinks, speaking of whiskey. And so
that's going to be on Friday the twenty fourth, and
then the following week Thursday the twenty for oh, you're right,
it's Thursday, not Friday. Thank you Jackie for saving me there.
Speaker 2 (39:06):
And you want to get your R S D P
N by the twenty third.
Speaker 5 (39:11):
That's it, right, which would be Wednesday. Yeah, so let
them know what Preston Preston Greens that you're coming. And
then on Derby Eve, the blue jeans, boots and bull
derby e party will occur out of the stockyards. That
sounds scary, now, that's yours, truly is the master of ceremonies,
(39:33):
and I do and my blue jean to my boots
from from my quarter horse days. And oh back in
the day before I went to the horse park, I
was doing doing all kinds of promotion stuff. And I
worked with a Q eight worked with a q h
A stuff. I love the I love quarter horses.
Speaker 3 (39:58):
Yeah we had it. We had of them.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
Oh yeah, we had one that was the original quarter
horse exhibit. Really yeah, wer Bow one of them, and
uh Betsy wrote him because about that. Sweet nice.
Speaker 5 (40:17):
He was a quiver. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (40:20):
Oh yeah, we have loose planks to poove that.
Speaker 5 (40:24):
That's that's all right.
Speaker 2 (40:26):
It was moller Bow.
Speaker 5 (40:27):
Okay, we had two. Is that like at the at
the prayer breeds like the breed representative. Oh that's great, Yeah, Nicole.
Speaker 2 (40:35):
I'd love to find an original old picture of something
like that from the horse park.
Speaker 5 (40:41):
I hate your kribber.
Speaker 2 (40:43):
Oh yeah, well that's where it goes.
Speaker 5 (40:46):
Yeah, he was I found out for kids.
Speaker 3 (40:49):
Majestic Prince was a grand looking horse.
Speaker 5 (40:52):
Oh, beautiful chestnut.
Speaker 3 (40:53):
Yeah, just great. Yeah, and he was a kubber.
Speaker 5 (40:56):
Majestic Prince was a cribber. That was my first favorite horse.
Speaker 3 (41:00):
Along with Mary Poppins. Was a junkie. Yeah, I know,
he just broke my heart. I wouldn't Yeah, well yeah, booful.
Speaker 2 (41:13):
We went out to pick him up for the next one.
Speaker 5 (41:17):
When yeah, rest that's pretty good.
Speaker 2 (41:20):
We knew exactly what Farmie was on because you turn
left off the road and you see nothing but that
top rail chued and chewed and cho just from forever. Yeah,
we used to get some stuff we called horse mace
and sprayed the top yeah rail, and that hilped.
Speaker 5 (41:41):
So yeah, we've got some cribbons at old Friends, but
we're at that point we don't worry about it.
Speaker 3 (41:49):
Oh yeah, that's just probably teeth.
Speaker 2 (41:52):
Yeah, how could you hurt anything cribbon with no teeth.
Speaker 5 (41:59):
Cubbies got his teeth, yeah, but he's not a creeper.
Speaker 3 (42:03):
Oh I know, but you know, you maybe when they
got my teeth, maybe when.
Speaker 2 (42:10):
They cripple those years is no teeth teeth losing your teeth,
you's got nothing to do at age.
Speaker 3 (42:16):
You just got something to do with drug.
Speaker 5 (42:19):
It seems to be the case these days.
Speaker 3 (42:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (42:21):
Now, so at the farm, Silver Charm and touch Goold
are now the senior citizens. They are the thirty both
thirty one raced against each other, as you know in
the in the Triple Crown Races of ninety seven, and
they're in paddocks next to each other. Now that's great,
and they are the two toothless ones. Yeah, but that
(42:43):
it was surgery for them because they've got so many problems.
It was just better for them. And as soon as
they lost their teeth, they gained weight.
Speaker 3 (42:52):
I think tackle editor was thirty one now because he
wasn't in their class.
Speaker 5 (42:56):
But you know, well he thinks he is, so he
thinks he Oh yeah, first he's concerned.
Speaker 2 (43:02):
He is.
Speaker 5 (43:03):
Yeah, is he thirty one? Thirty or thirty one?
Speaker 6 (43:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (43:06):
I believe he's thirty one. Okay, we got to check that.
Speaker 3 (43:10):
Yeah, go ahead, he.
Speaker 5 (43:11):
Needs to take his He can be one of the
deans of Old Friends too. With those two.
Speaker 2 (43:18):
I think Michael said, who's birthday was like last week
or the week before? You mentioned that, remember, and he
said thirty or thirty one? I don't know. We got
the paper.
Speaker 5 (43:30):
I'm thinking he's thirty, but I could that's will be
the homework assignment of this week. What is Tubby's age?
Speaker 3 (43:41):
I gave him the papers on him.
Speaker 5 (43:44):
We got him, but just I'm heading back to the
farm now now it's on my mind. I'm gonna now,
I'm gonna.
Speaker 3 (43:50):
A little harsh with him. Is two years younger? I
think he doesn't look at age a.
Speaker 5 (43:56):
Beautiful, major, gorgeous love.
Speaker 2 (44:02):
Pretty heads.
Speaker 5 (44:04):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (44:05):
Yeah, no Clayborn.
Speaker 3 (44:08):
Well they didn't read him with one of their class did,
but that's where he was raised. It was one hundred
down another year and it's Saratoga really ended up winning
one hundred and sixty four thousand and something like an
empty stole money.
Speaker 5 (44:28):
Well but blue Jeans, Boots and Bulls is five point
thirty to eleven. It's a fun party. It really. There's
a Calcutta so you know, be ready to purchase a
Derby winner.
Speaker 2 (44:42):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (44:43):
Big good bands, Uh Kenny Duo, Night Flyer and Boogie
G Benefit Boogie G. The night Flyer, by the way,
is I think if you're a fan of the Eagles,
that's the best Eagles cover band in the known universe.
They you think you're seeing a concert of the Eagle. You
(45:06):
know that, Yes, that that and they are. They are
really good. And it benefits old friends and then the
Kentucky Children's Hospitals Neo Natal Care Unit and then Timbers
Grateful Companions, which is also a great aftercare organization. So
come out there for that and you can you can
(45:26):
even buy a ticket. You can go online and buy
a ticket or you can buy a ticket just at
the at the door. The other big thing we've got
real quick is this is a big week for the
horse industry and and Lexington in a in a big
way because eye FAR, which stands for the International Form
(45:49):
for the after Care of Race Sources, is having its
international meeting in Lexington this week. They're gonna it's gonna
kick off on Wednesday and go through the weekend. And
this is a big deal. Uh. It's for example, they
have their meetings like in Tokyo or Singapore or and
so now it's Lexington and I'm going to be on
(46:11):
a panel to talk about the management of an aftercare
organization and how to go about best business practices and succession,
you know, from the founder to a new person, which
Michael and I can talk for endless hours about. And
Brian Waldridge is also Yeah, Brian, Brian's on a panel too,
(46:37):
uh to talk about the rehabbing of horses to different careers.
So anyway, big week and they're coming to old friends
and it's going.
Speaker 2 (46:46):
To be great coming here.
Speaker 3 (46:47):
I better catch up. I'm running behind here. Dual breeders
cup Win a Golden Pale one graded states at two
three and full one age station and earned over one
hundred and eighty two thousand stands at Ashwurst to the
farm with a great reputation for developing leading cyrus, including
the late Uncle Mole. Golden Pal sire Uncle Mole side
(47:08):
of Winter of the Kentucky Derby in his first cop
and of the ranks among the nation's leading cyrus, he's
right there again. In twenty twenty five he siged some
one hundred and ten stakes winners, and they've won major
stakes on every conceivable type of racing service. Golden Pale
won the Grade two Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprinted two,
won the Grave one Breeders Cup Sprint Grade two at
(47:31):
the next year he won of Wolford Cup Stakes at
Keenan and the Grade three Quick Called Stakes at Saratoga. Three.
Came back and won the Grade two Shakertown at Kenan,
the Woodford and the Keenan again, and the Grade three
Toy Stakes at Saratoga four. Along the way he reted.
He recorded Bier speed figures of one hundred and ten
and one hundred and seven. He could fly. The name
(47:52):
of Golden Pal was the high class runner the Ladies Shipman,
the greatest stakes winn of over nine hundred thousand and
also placed in the Grave one Readers Cup Sprint against
the Boys. There's a black type glore in Golden Palace.
Family First cuf Weenings were in demand last year, selling

I've got to get this.
Speaker 3 (51:13):
I'm hoping that James James comes in.
Speaker 5 (51:20):
I think I think he's James Gollway's smartest handicapper and
the next to Michael Blowing the smartest handy capper. I know.
Speaker 3 (51:27):
Yeah, Michael Bowen just tells you as a handicapper.
Speaker 5 (51:33):
He certainly has told me.
Speaker 3 (51:34):
You mean he's not. Oh no, Well, on Friday.
Speaker 5 (51:38):
All that money I've been.
Speaker 3 (51:40):
Losing on Friday, April eleventh, She's So Spicy, A three
old fifth and the second crop by Mattoli won the

Oaklawn Booth from the first crop by my totally one

by Bill and Coriina Hellibrodt Booth has reeled off three
straight steaks wins, the Grade three count Fleet, the Grade

called dais a Brian O, Mark and daniel A five
nine two nine fours years old, thirty and the website
is spencerf Farm dot com.
Speaker 2 (53:37):
Okay, I want to talk about Hill Parker. Hill Parker
is our favorite real estate guy. He's so good at it.
He now is all that stuff zoning and regulations about
land in the state and the local and what you
can do and what you can't. So he's great. He's
(53:59):
a full time realtor, principal broker, graduated from UK Business.
And here's the other half that is the big deal.
Hill's a licensed horse trainer in eleven states. He's been
training and inventing and selling and developing horse farms for years.
(54:21):
So that's the key. If you're interested in a horse
farm to buy, or something that's you know, cattle farm
that you want to turn into a horse farm, you
better go see Hill. Because once you make a mistake
of putting a road here and a barn there, and
it doesn't really work. You've messed up and wasted a
(54:45):
lot of money. So he asked the right questions. You're
going to do boarding, breeding training out, so you have
to figure that out before you figure out what you're
going to put way. He wants to know about long
term plans and where you're gonna put a road like
(55:06):
and for instance, if you breed, you have to have
a particular barn with double stalls, so you've got places
for the mayor to fall and chuck the barn. What
about big enough stalls? If you're gonna breed, you have
to have double stalls for mayors who are falling, and
you need space in the hayloft for storage. Oh it's endless.
(55:29):
And I mean if you ain't done it, and you
ain't lived in one of those, you really that's who
you need. You can't go in and think you know
it if you don't, So give Hill Parker a call.
It's a great guy.
Speaker 5 (55:42):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (55:43):
That number to call this is his cell number eight
five nine six h eight A zero three nine and
the website once again it's a good one too. Lexhorsefarms
Dot com great people. You love them and give them
a call and they'll guarantee you, guarantee it that they
will do a great job for you.
Speaker 4 (56:06):
Now back to horsetaps with Ursua ellis all right, o Kadoki.
Speaker 2 (56:15):
So here we sit, Oh Sunday Silence is going to
have a day in Paris twenty five legend a Bourbon
County Award because.
Speaker 5 (56:29):
There's so much going on in Bourbon, Bourbon County.
Speaker 2 (56:32):
Yeah, it really is.
Speaker 5 (56:34):
In the horse art in Bourbon County. There's not no
place in the world like it.
Speaker 2 (56:40):
Yeah, it's great. They did a good job. And I
got to tell you what's his name, the tax shop Quilla.
He's one of those driving forces behind much of that stuff.
Speaker 5 (56:56):
What are we supposed to do with lives?
Speaker 2 (56:59):
We're supposed to go to Lill's probably about noon on
Thursday before Derby.
Speaker 5 (57:08):
Yeah, see I keep.
Speaker 2 (57:09):
Getting it get messed up with Holy Thursday. That was yesterday.
Speaker 5 (57:14):
But anyway, it depends upon your point of view.
Speaker 2 (57:17):
Yes, she is going to have like a cooking lesson
that's got to do with Derby before she has people
in there to speak, and everybody's supposed to ask questions
about the Derby and by golly, we got lucky on
that one. Our choice of the day, Our dish of
(57:39):
the day is yeah, uh oh see, and everybody gets
test one.
Speaker 5 (57:49):
I guess it's going to be a happy day at
Lil something.
Speaker 3 (57:54):
Happy day is people leaving up yeah there.
Speaker 5 (57:57):
Now really it can serve liquor now little.
Speaker 2 (58:03):
Oh yeah, how about that. We're supposed to Thursday is
our day.
Speaker 3 (58:10):
It comes James, and we'll see James.
Speaker 2 (58:16):
Be there and talk about Derby experiences and all then
quote James Schullers and stuff like that, and lil at
twelve o'clock.
Speaker 5 (58:27):
Well, it's just a it's a great time. You're right.
This is Easter weekend. We got the Ben Ben ally
at Keeneland, then the Kentucky Three Day event is going
to happen this week, then it's Derby the next week
after that. It's just we're the luckiest people in the
world to be where we.
Speaker 2 (58:45):
Are sponsoring it this week.
Speaker 5 (58:47):
There that the three day it's Defender and this is
all serving to confuse everybody for years. It was Rowax.
We knew that, and it's still hard not call it
roll accident. It was it was a land Rover. Yeah,
and we were getting used to saying land Rover, well,
land Rover Kentucky three Day Event. Well, Defender is the
(59:12):
leading well A brand, a car for land Rover, and
so they want to push Defender. So now it's the
Defender Kentucky three Day Event.
Speaker 2 (59:21):
Got you, Yeah, I have to write that in the
palm of my hands.
Speaker 5 (59:25):
I tell you I missed my friend Janie Atkinson who
ran that event for well, who really was kind of
the founding driving force. And uh and she still I
shouldn't say she's still doing well and doing good, but uh,
we had a lot of fun when I was running
the horse park and she.
Speaker 2 (59:41):
Was Betsy fish back I started working and doing.
Speaker 5 (59:45):
She's a treasure too.
Speaker 2 (59:47):
She was just a wonderful person. Just loved her death.
Speaker 5 (59:51):
Yeah, yeah, absolutely, yeah.
Speaker 2 (59:54):
We'll have fun.
Speaker 5 (59:55):
Well I will. I'm going to be getting right in
the car and heading to the farm. But I'll be
listening intently to James Scully's latest wisdom that it's gonna
make your hearing aids up, that's gonna make us all rich.
Speaker 2 (01:00:09):
I know it. I knew it.
Speaker 3 (01:00:12):
Well. Gervin approving grade one sires standing his third season
at Kentucky after covering one hundred and eighty one and
one hundred and thirty eight marriages his first two seasons
in the Bluegrass. In three seasons in Florida, he signed
ten percent stakes, winning some starters. Along them was Phaser
one of the Grade one Starlett Stakes, the Grade two
Santa Neitoaks, the Grete three Last Virginies, and the Grade
(01:00:34):
three Santa Isabelle, both those at Santa Na Sharon six
hundred and twelve thousand. Then there was Damon's Mound, one
of four stakes including the Grade two Saratoga Special in
the Grade two ghanabab Doroth Vader winner of three states
including the Grade two Devona Dale and Second and the
Grade one Acorn Stakes. That's at Belmont. Of course, close
(01:00:56):
the Game Sugar win of three stakes, two of them
at Churchill, another at saratogam placed in a Grade one
stunner one stakes at Belmont and Aquaduct atomically one stakes
at Bell Stream, placed in graded stakes dbs name on
the Astoria at Belmont, swerving in power and numbered both
one stakes at Marmoth so that Bell's Blue Bell Seminole
(01:01:18):
Chief and the Honey de Jon both one stakes at
Ghost three. And believe me, that's just scratching the surface.
Now you know why they wanted him at dres stood.
They brought him up of Florida to stand there. Gervin
one Grade one stakes and earned over one point six
million his first Kentucky year. Lings of superb and he
is being strongly supported by Erdristudd, which is founded by
(01:01:41):
Burden See Jones and nations leading breeder of stakes winners
in twenty twenty four with twenty got a great reputation
for raising runners over at Drewstudd called Shannon a cow
eight five nine, eight seventy three, seventy two, seventy and
the website is ardrestuod dot com. Oh, mister James, good,
he just walked in and good did you bring the
(01:02:03):
catch with you?
Speaker 8 (01:02:05):
No, no, they were outside. Good morning, artistol Jackie reside.
It's good to see y'all. And uh yeah, Burne Jones
he's a.
Speaker 5 (01:02:13):
Breeder of two.
Speaker 8 (01:02:15):
Burn C. Jones a breeder of two horses in the
Derby this year, and his estate co owns one of them,
I know, chunk of golds, one that he bred. I
forgot the other one that he co owned and bred.
But uh yeah, I've been doing some work on the
Derby horses. So I seen, I saw where he's going
to be represented, you know, the late great horse you know,
(01:02:38):
oh yeah, yeah, and one of them, one of the
horses is out of a proud citizen mayor you know,
who was the sire of Proble Maria and you know
was well supported by air Dura and such. And yeah,
I think pro prole Maria or pro Maria or Lovely
(01:02:59):
Lovely Maria. Believe what was it? Believe you can?
Speaker 5 (01:03:03):
I believe?
Speaker 7 (01:03:03):
Uh?
Speaker 8 (01:03:04):
And then and yeah one another but yeah, so the
Derby field's coming into focus. So obviously the post straw
will be a week from today. Uh, next Saturday's opening
night at Churchill Downs, and they have a night racing
card and like between the fourth and fifth race I
believe is the Oaks and Derby draw. So the field
(01:03:25):
will be set then and there's up to four also
eligible for the Derby. And right, yeah, I'll be there
all week and uh, the the a couple of all right,
yeah for sure. And there's the what I was gonna
say is all the jockeys are set for all the
(01:03:46):
horses except for Matticutt Road. And he could get Frankie
to Torri because he's ridden in before. Uh, that's what
a lot of people think. But the thing with the
field is is that there's a horse by Asa who
ran second to Journalism of Sandy Derby, and he's the
younger brother of Mage and the Derby winner two years
(01:04:08):
ago and of Dornick who won the Belmont last year.
He's on the AE list, so he's gonna need some
help to get in. He might be twenty fourth right now,
but it doesn't look like built and rendered judgment are
going to run who are in front of him, and
therefore he's probably twenty second, but he still needs two defections,
(01:04:31):
you know, by the day before the Oaks at like
nine am in the morning, but before we get to
next weekend's opening card and such. Yeah, we got the
class Saturday at Kielan today they got two steaks, both
sort of longer distance races a mile and a half
elk Horn on turf and a mile in thirty sixteenths.
(01:04:53):
Ben Ally and Ben l Hobey say it and.
Speaker 9 (01:05:00):
Uh the uh they both races are I thought pretty competitive.
Uh in the the ben Alley, it's really you have
a You got this horse Duke of Love who's five
to two morning line favored and his last race looks
like a tightener and he could definitely be a contender
for Josie Carroll. But I like number seven n o'mass Bourbon.
(01:05:22):
He's making his four year old debut for Jim Wilkes
and he I'm sorry his second start back, he got
a tightener at gold Stream. He really I like the
way he came on last year. He won the super Derby,
he ran third in the Fayette and then he ran
uh fourth in the uh Lucas Classic against good Field,
Hit Show and rat 'n' roll.
Speaker 8 (01:05:42):
We're in there. So he was coming on as a
three year old un o Moss Bourbon. We'll see if
you against step up as a four year old, and
then in the Elkhorn the you know, I know that
this rebel red. He didn't run very well in his
comebacker at Fairgrounds and then Menas, but that was sort
of a weird race. Some big, huge bomb won it
(01:06:04):
and I looked for him to run a lot better
for Sritavo second time out the one Horse. I also
took a look at Phil Tomato's horse in there bound
the Cough. The twelve had a real trouble trip last
time in the Peggotts's World Cup Turf. He wanted Keenland
a greade three two years ago, so he showed affinity
for the turf, and I think that's why to Motto
(01:06:25):
sent him. So it's sort of like the twelve and
the one in the eighth in the Elk Corn and
I got one other pick at Keenland today. It's number
four Rocky Joy in the race eleven, eight to one
on the morning line. I think Paulo Lobo, who's got
him out here at the training center, UH used these
(01:06:45):
last two races as like setups for his return to turf.
He showed an affinity for Keenland's turf last fall, and
I think he's gonna run well the four Rocky Joy
and race eleven, and then at Oakland today we got
the oaklandn Handicap. That race is a pretty contentious. You
got morning line favorite and first mission for Cox, but
(01:07:07):
Skippy Longstocking's gonna take a lot of money for Saffie Joseph.
I like Alexander Helios, which is another Saffie Joseph horse.
He's four to one in the morning line, number five
and race eleven at Oakland he's coming on. You know,
he was coming on last year and he got sidelined
in May, and he came back this year and he's
(01:07:28):
just starting to hit his best form, best career form.
Alexander Helios and then I'll mentioned real quickly before I go.
They got a pair of Preakness preps. We had the
Lexington and Keenland last Saturday, and the winner of that race, Gosker,
was a last out made winner for Brendan Walsh, and
he looked really good. But the horse that ran second, Bracketbuster,
(01:07:49):
hadn't run since like running fifth of Sovereignty in the
Grade three streets since last October, and that was a
really good comeback effort for him. So both of those
horses could be under considered for the Pretness. They might
get to a little bit easier spot. But they have
the Bathouse Road today at Oakland Park, and you got
(01:08:10):
instant replay in there. Who ran third in the Louisiana Derby.
He's in there against Uh. It's a it's a you
got this horse test secure. That's okay, uh and uh.
But Caldera for Lucas the two horse, that horse has
(01:08:30):
a little bit of a chance to to secure ships
in for Bob Baffort. So it'll be interesting in race
to watch Race six at Oaklawn, and then I'll mention
at Laurel Park today. They got a big steaks packed
card at Laurel and one of their races is the
Federico Tessio and that race is going to have some
(01:08:52):
potentially some you know, it's gonna it's a winning your
in for the Preakness. So the big favorite in there,
let me pull that up something, Jim. He's gonna be
the morning live favor. But it's a pretty good, it's
a pretty good. It's it's a pretty interesting field. I
think there's some up and coming horses in that Federico Testio.
(01:09:12):
It's Race eight at Law or Race twelve at Laurel
today at the I'm sorry, Race eleven, I keep messing
that up. Race eleven. Pay Billy is the favorite. He's
coming off of winning the Miracle Wood. He's an up
and coming horse for Michael Gorman. He got Steadily Do Right.
You got Surfside Moon off of a good second in
(01:09:33):
the Withers. I like this horse, Kentucky Outlaw the five
horse race eleven at Laurel He's eight to one. He's
a park shipper, but he's got the figures off of
a maiden and allowance win. Maybe you can step up
and beat these horses in the Federico Tessio SoSE they've
run that testio alli as a schedule before. It's been
on the uh prenus you know, weekend and such.
Speaker 3 (01:09:56):
But they are Yeah, they got good horses.
Speaker 8 (01:10:00):
They got some sprinters running there and and yeah, I
gotta okay, I'll be watching that race for sure for all.
Speaker 2 (01:10:08):
Now, Tesio, how old is that steak? I'm sorry I didn't.
Speaker 8 (01:10:14):
Probably from the sixties? No, she said how long?
Speaker 3 (01:10:17):
How old old retire?
Speaker 5 (01:10:21):
In the fifties sixties?
Speaker 3 (01:10:23):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (01:10:24):
Or no, he chased around a long time.
Speaker 8 (01:10:26):
Yeah, so it probably got installed in the early seventies
because he retired what in the late sixties or something. Okay,
well he really Tessio, you know you know the trainer, right,
Federico TiO No oh, no, I got it wrong, I
got it wrong. Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:10:46):
Now was the guy from Italy?
Speaker 8 (01:10:49):
Yeah right right, yeah, and he was the one that
would uh say, don't squeeze the lemon dry or something
like that.
Speaker 3 (01:11:00):
Was that the stordium. No I might have a signor. Yeah,
that was from South America, from Argentina.
Speaker 8 (01:11:12):
Well, Tessa, I thought was from Italy and he was
like a horseman and a trainer, and I thought he
came over and trained in North America.
Speaker 7 (01:11:19):
But he was.
Speaker 5 (01:11:20):
He was. I had to look at.
Speaker 2 (01:11:21):
The whole huge, big deal with breeding, and he was tremendous.
Speaker 8 (01:11:27):
And what book are you reading right? What book are
you reading right now?
Speaker 5 (01:11:32):
Ursel?
Speaker 3 (01:11:32):
What book am I reading?
Speaker 8 (01:11:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:11:35):
I just finished a uh.
Speaker 8 (01:11:38):
The book on Black Goal right, yeah, the Louisiana Derby,
Kentucky Derby Winter Yeah yeah, buried at Paragraunds.
Speaker 3 (01:11:45):
Yeah. And then I've got one at uh pig. Oh.
I can't remember the last name now. And I voted
for him as once when I had to vote, you know,
for Trainer of the year.
Speaker 5 (01:12:01):
Oh PG Johnson, Oh yeah, PG.
Speaker 8 (01:12:03):
Johnson.
Speaker 3 (01:12:04):
Yeah that's a good book.
Speaker 8 (01:12:05):
Yeah. Yeah, the gosh he trained for some big operation, right,
like green or some.
Speaker 3 (01:12:12):
Big The name of it is the Big Horse.
Speaker 8 (01:12:15):
Yeah, well who's the big Horse?
Speaker 3 (01:12:19):
I haven't got to that yet.
Speaker 2 (01:12:22):
They don't tell you the end.
Speaker 8 (01:12:24):
Yeah. He was the private trainer for some big operation.
I forget what it was. Quite a character, Oh yeah,
the York guy.
Speaker 3 (01:12:32):
I remember when he's from Chicago. He was sixteen years
old and he went to the stockyards and bought a
horse and one with it. He was good, but he
trained Voloni to win the Oh yeah, yeah, the Readers Cup.
Speaker 8 (01:12:54):
He beat madagulated the Aura. Yeah yeah, yeah, he had
he had been running against him and have been you know,
pretty much beaten in several races, but yeah, stepped up
up that day and not only won it, but won
it convincingly.
Speaker 3 (01:13:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:13:11):
And that was because those guys were scamming the pick
six and they had, yeah, they four favorites one of
the first four races, so they just went all all
in the last two. They're gonna still be favorite. It's
gonna be a short payout, and they could scam it
for like four dollars tickets. And then Balpony won and
they won like, you know, three million dollars.
Speaker 3 (01:13:32):
I don't believe another stakes.
Speaker 5 (01:13:34):
He placed in a bunch of them after that. Yeah,
he came back.
Speaker 8 (01:13:36):
Yeah, he was a hard hitter, definitely a horse that
ran in a lot of steaks and mostly placed at him.
He didn't have too many big wins, but that was
definitely an enormous one. But one of the bigger upsets.
I mean, obviously ar Cons the biggest upset and Braiders
Cup classic history. But after him, you know, Ballpony shot
(01:14:00):
up there.
Speaker 3 (01:14:01):
Yeah. I did a little story today about shat guy
who had won the uh the Ben Ben l I handicap,
and I knew the horse very well. He was a
Dictionana bread and I used to I just grew up
with him kind of, but I had to look it up.
I mean I was looking up and I just pulled
(01:14:21):
his past poerformance. He was never out of money in
twenty one stars.
Speaker 8 (01:14:26):
Yeah, that's good for as the people have him because
he cat at checks. Yeah already. Well, yeah, there was
a horse yesterday in the maiden rance at Keeenland. It
was like Grade six or seven over five with five
seconds in Mayhatta. You know that's one of my favorite angles,
(01:14:48):
and I'll be darned if that horse didn't win, you know,
I mean, you got a horse that's over five with
five seconds. That horse like had been burns money time
after time after time, and eventually you know that that dogs,
you know, gonna bite you.
Speaker 5 (01:15:04):
But it's not.
Speaker 8 (01:15:06):
If it's one out of every ten, I can livel
with that and then and then how but you said?
Speaker 3 (01:15:11):
Joe Palmo wrote a colin once about training this horse
that you kept every time at the horse would get
a good beat. This guy would ride down the names
or ride down the names of the horses you know,
and everything, and and he says, when what are you
doing that? Far said one of these days, Uh, the
ones of the beach is he's going to run against him?
Speaker 8 (01:15:30):
Yeah, one of my big principles is like trying to
you know, find vulnerable favorites and not horse eating. He
went off the second choice, but he would have been
high on the list and it just happens.
Speaker 3 (01:15:42):
So move on, alright.
Speaker 8 (01:15:45):
Yeah, well, it's good to see you all, and I'll
text rest of any picks I got for the skill Saturday.
Speaker 5 (01:15:49):
Appreciate it. Don't forget his own Derby day for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:15:52):
We won't to Derby.
Speaker 8 (01:15:54):
I'll tell you that race has so much speed.
Speaker 5 (01:15:57):
You know.
Speaker 8 (01:15:57):
I thought the Bluegrass was really key because East Avenue
only had ten points coming in and it looked like
he probably, you know, would he had runed so poorly
in his last two races, didn't look like to me
he would run well. And then he ran a huge
race on the lead, he beat Olden Almighty to the
lead and he held on for a second or he
got beat by nose for the win in second and
that puts him in the field. And even though he
(01:16:18):
has a separate trainer from Soverberty, god Dolphin owes him
both and Godolphin would love to win the Derby, you know,
and you know wash is like one of their trainers,
and he would so basically, I mean East Avenue seemingly
his best chance is on the lead, you know, and
you know you'd be in a situation where you could
fall out or whatever. But I just think he's going
(01:16:39):
to be gunning it so hard because even if he
didn gets out on the lead, and you know, weekends,
he's gonna be setting the table for the horse with
the same ownership sovereignty. So it's not only him. You know,
You've got now oh and Almighty back in the field.
You got this admired Daytona coming off a wire to
wire win u a Derby. You're gonna have Drigaz potentially
(01:17:01):
Citizen Bowl and American Promise has a run in seven
weeks since a front running win where he sets the
track record and he's working like five fur Wong bullets.
He's going to be gun for speed by Lucas, so
all of a sudden, to me, all the speed, they're
all in trouble in the derby. The race is going
to set up for you know, late runner. It's a
(01:17:22):
smid pack closer or just a deep closer. So that's
the way I look at it right now. I like
Sam Ann and sovereignty. You know, I obviously respect journalism,
but I'm not going to take a real short price
with him, and to me, he's going to be a
short price.
Speaker 3 (01:17:40):
They're good, thanks, all right, we'll see all later. Alrighty,
but don't forget hi. Alrighty, Hi Betsy.
Speaker 2 (01:17:52):
I know it's seventeen minutes chapter nine, but hello hello Betsy.
Speaker 3 (01:17:58):
Anyway, Okay, let me see what have I got to
do now? Oh yeah, I better take care of our
cliver huh cliver kleimburn. Oh yeah, I do that and
then I'll target done. Yeah. Oh, talk about silver State again.
(01:18:22):
It's crib By winning a maiden special at Churchill Downs
about nine and three quarter links. Sweet To started and
went on to win Grade one stakes in over a million,
nine hundred and thirty three thousand and one stretch, he
posted six wins in a row, the streak ending with
a victory and the historic Grade one Metropolitan at Belmont.
We also earned Black Kype and the Great one Whitney
(01:18:43):
at Saratoga, the Grade to Oakland Handicap, the Grade to
Louisiana Derby, the Grade two Risen Star Stakes, the Grade
three the comp the Fifth Season Stakes, the Last six
Handicap in the park's dirt mouth. Silver State had Grade
one class and he was dead game and consistent, and
that's about all you can ask for a race. The
Grand Individual he sold for four hundred and fifty thousand
(01:19:04):
dollars as a yearly and a first crop two old
sold for three hundred and thirty five thousand and two
hundred and seventy five thousand earlier this week at the
Overear Spring Sale. Silver State is one of one hundred
and nine States winners by Heartspun, a Grade one winner
of over two point six million, and a son of
famed claverron Side Danzig Danzig Side one hundred and ninety
(01:19:27):
eight States winners. Silver State's damned Supreme one States placed
in graded states and earned over one hundred and thirty
one thousand and she's signed by the very successful Empire Maker.
He won the Belmont and he's the son of Kentucky
Derby winner and bridled Silver State's second Damn Moon Bell,
is a full sister of Kentucky Derby Winter Monarco. So
(01:19:49):
there's Silver State's pedigary overflows with classic performances. You're invited
to visit Clvern to inspect Silver State. Cleavern staians just
called Bernie Sam or Jacob Wesz eight five nine nine
seven two three three and the website is Spencery Farm
(01:20:11):
Cliburn Farm.
Speaker 2 (01:20:14):
That website is Clavern.
Speaker 3 (01:20:17):
Okay, Claven Farm. Yeah, excuse me, I was choking, Okay,
so wandering, I got it. I can't do two things
you wants and lose the room.
Speaker 2 (01:20:28):
Talking about help insurance company agency, they are an agency.
They are not tied up to one particular giant UH
worldwide insurance company. They are independent so they get to
poke around and find the best deals for you. And
(01:20:54):
what they'll do they will all prepared to provide you
with a no cost, no obligation reviewing comparison of your insurance.
That's how they do it. They've got some really good companies.
We had something of a fender bender on my left door.
(01:21:17):
You know. We were at Little's and I told Shack,
I said, some old lady ran into my door, and
he looked at me, like, what am I talking about?
An old lady? You know, I thought that was kind
of weird. Anyway, they're great. They are super and they've
(01:21:38):
got a girl named Laurie that answers the phone, and
she knows all your stuff. You know, do you have
a phone number?
Speaker 8 (01:21:45):
Sure?
Speaker 2 (01:21:46):
Do you? Sure? No problem? You know anything else? That's
how friendly and nice they are. You deal with one person,
you don't deal with the seventeen thousand bank of people
that answer phones that in Polynesia are somewhere I can't.
Drives me crazy anyway, and I found out that I
(01:22:13):
went around and poked around and found some people that
are really wonderful to fix the car. Names Ruffing. They're
on Delaware Avenue. Nicest people ever, and they fix the door.
It looks beautiful. They don't try to skin you, they
don't try to want to jack up the price and
(01:22:37):

(01:26:30):
The three hundred, founder of Limestone Steaks went to she

he stands over at at Clavern Farm. No excuse me
it Spend three Farmer toley Bill and Corene Hellibrock won it.
(01:26:51):
The five hundred and found dollar count Fleet Steaks at
oakonn Although count Fleet never raced in Oakon, it was
won by Booth Booths, also by Motoli over at Spend
three bread by clear Sky Farms. One hundred and fifty
pound out of top flight states went to Headline Numbers
by gun Runner Bread by Autu's Racing Stables. One hundred
(01:27:14):
found dollar heavenly called stakes at Lawrel Royal Spa one
that by Violence Spread by Graffiti Farm. The one hundred
thousand dollars. Native Dancer steaktions are one to Catalia strike
by Carolana Cruiser. I don't know that horse one hundred

famous trainer up at Worcester. Wasn't that by Empire Maker
Bread by Jerry Dixon, the Revocable Trust, an Empire Magic
a syndicate and a Grade three classic Jose d. Diego
at Camaro went to Last Chance at Glory Golden Sanso,
(01:28:06):
which spent three brid by Samantha's Egel. So those were
what that many stakes? Last week we did.
Speaker 2 (01:28:16):
Godley. You know, I don't hear people talk so much
about round Table anymore, you know.
Speaker 3 (01:28:24):
Yeah, well, hell, he's been dead for a couple of decades.
Speaker 2 (01:28:29):
Well, I know, but a lot of horses haven't. They
said at the time he has the greatest turf horse ever.
Oh yeah, And it was funny, Jimmy Drymon. We had
a mayor for him. What was her name, silver Setting.
I think anyway, she was gonna be his blue hen
(01:28:51):
And by golly, the first time she got in full,
something happened when she was falling and she kind of
got torn up inside, and so out of nowhere.
Speaker 3 (01:29:05):
We got her in full Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:29:07):
Remember we had to call him.
Speaker 3 (01:29:08):
He had that lnate that uh little island now down
in the Mediterranean and not the Mediterranean.
Speaker 2 (01:29:15):
Uh. We call America.
Speaker 3 (01:29:21):
Yeah, you go from.
Speaker 5 (01:29:22):
America, right, Just want to make sure you got it.
Speaker 3 (01:29:26):
We called him and it was I called him February
the second or something like that.
Speaker 2 (01:29:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:29:32):
If they weren't open that well, we called him down
there and say, if we got to breed this mayor. Yes,
when Jimmy head was running what was it, Dixiana he
called it something else anyway, but we've got to breed
this mayor right away. He said, well, the shed's not
(01:29:52):
open yet. I said, we'll open the damn thing. If
we're gonna get her in full course, we're going to
take her over there. And we didn't got her in
full now it's only full shiver ahead.
Speaker 5 (01:30:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:30:02):
Only he ended up winning some races. Yeah, okay, we
got duck with us. Hey, Brian, Hey, good morning there,
I'm here, good morning, good morning, good morning. We just
said we had had John Nicholson on just now and
(01:30:23):
here earlier, and he was talking about you, you, you
and here speaking at the same same ceremony. Or whatever
you would call it a meeting or something that.
Speaker 7 (01:30:35):
What was it again, It's the International Forum on the
Africa of Racehorses. It's I guess it goes international. It
is international, so it's it's in the United States this time,
and it's going to be out of the Spy Coast
beginning Thursday of this coming week.
Speaker 3 (01:30:57):
Anyway, And he was talking about you going to speak
and speak there, and so is he John I have.
Speaker 7 (01:31:05):
I'm on a panel with just that after horses, he'll
do coming off the track in some of the ways,
you know, we help them to uh deal with retirement
and the health issues and all those things. So it'd
be really good. There's people on there from uh I'm
gonna be on with people from Japan and Australia in
(01:31:28):
the United States.
Speaker 3 (01:31:31):
Okay, well you'll be up here pretty soon.
Speaker 7 (01:31:34):
Then we're gonna be up there Monday. We were talking
about it today already, so we're very excited to get
up there. I have I have your cheese, so you
don't worry about getting your cheese. The cheese has already bought,
all right.
Speaker 3 (01:31:53):
We love that cheese. Anything else going on down they're
exciting besides the cheese, well, we.
Speaker 5 (01:31:59):
Have a.
Speaker 7 (01:32:01):
Bleeder case. It was kind of interesting, is the barrel horse.
Barrel horses will bleed, you know as much as or
it seems like more, because we sure to see a
lot of them they come through. And this horse had
bled and had bled from its nose, which at least
and well, I think it's be true across discipline. You know,
(01:32:23):
way less than five percent of horses will bleed from
their nose. But this horse had bled a couple of
times from the nose and it had worked let's see,
about four or five days before it had raised. So uh,
one of the what I do when I see this
horses is, especially the horse has a history of bleeding,
(01:32:45):
is I'm going to take a scope. Uh, and you
have to do it on today because you will make
sure you know what their muscles are up to in
their throat and sedate them that can affect it. But
just scope them with the twitch and you know, make
sure all the flappers and everything are okay. And you know,
this horse had had fine throat function. And so then
we did the think cad a bronco alveolor levage and
(01:33:06):
that just means going down in the far furthest reaches
of the lungs to your tube get stuck and then
put some salient in there and pull it back. And
I did with the scope. It was one of the
things I like about scope. The same scope you used
for doing stomachs. It's about ten feet long. Is can
I can see what the what the windpipe and all
(01:33:28):
that's up to horse didn't have a mucus, but we
went down there and get that scope stuck which salient,
then pull it back and you can find the cells
that they make. What happens when they bleed is they
have little terrors in the capillaries, the little fine blood
vessels of the lung and use it's in the top
(01:33:49):
part of the lung, but it's the whole lung is affected.
But when that happens and that bleed occurs, you know
there are cells in there whose job is to eat bacteria,
but they'll also come in there and eat those red
blood cells. And so that's one of the cells we
look for when we look at that wet in the microscope,
and and they're called hemus center of pages. But you know,
(01:34:09):
I found you know a lot of those you kind
of see that reddish brown blood pigment in them.
Speaker 2 (01:34:14):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (01:34:15):
And other thing he looked for is inflammation. This horse
didn't have any inflammation to speak of and didn't have
any mucus in there to speak of. So he was
a pure bleeder. And you know, kind of difficult thing
with this horse, was trying to figure out what to
do with them. They said, if he could up giving
these horses laces, and you know, they said they gave
him over two ccs of LA six, he seemed to
(01:34:36):
wash out. That's not much LACEX young racing. You, I'd
give him a lead three. So I kind of had
lasigs off my list to try on this horse. And
they were already giving him some flax, which is a
you know, Mega three anti inflammatory. But you know there's
(01:34:56):
some really good evidence, uh that's new that official oil
and this was in race horses really helped to reduce
information in the lung and and even those horses performed
about it made more money. And so I wanted to
change his van on that horse because I didn't have
a lot of places to go. Was to try some
(01:35:19):
fish oil in them. And it hadn't been rested very
much either. You know, if they if they have a
big bleed, I like to know, at least a month
of just paddock grass, and so we're in giving him
some time off and start the fish oil. And it
takes about a month to build up those Omega three
fatty acids where with effects decreases inflammation, so that all
(01:35:41):
time good. And you know they were already also, you know,
drawing the horse off. You know, there's when I worked
for the tech equin research. You know, we found if
you just pulled the horses water four hours before and
without laces, that you can still you know, didn't do
it as much as LACEYX that pulled away down as
much as lasix, but you can you can you know,
(01:36:04):
draw them down, you know, and and reduce their water
that way. So they were already doing that. So hopefully
we're just putting his horse on something to help his lungs.
I just kind of do better and some rest will
get him mine.
Speaker 3 (01:36:19):
All right?
Speaker 5 (01:36:21):
All right?
Speaker 3 (01:36:22):
Well is we're really looking forward to seeing you.
Speaker 7 (01:36:25):
Oh, me too, I can't wait. We were we've been,
uh doctor Caitlin Winzow's coming up with me, and we
were talking about how excited we are to get up there.
I'll say, well you go today a week from now,
we'll be on the shadow of Ursel.
Speaker 5 (01:36:38):
So we just can't wait.
Speaker 3 (01:36:40):
Oh great, great, great, you're bringing your cold lady in.
Speaker 7 (01:36:46):
Well, I need to get him a ride. One of
the one of the guys who has hauled for me
before it doing it for the summer. But there's a
transport company that that you kind of go out delted
down to New Orleans and they've they've hauled for me.
So I need to call them and and see when
they got some spots open, because he's getting big, and
(01:37:10):
so far he didn't know he's a boy. But I
just got to get him, get him up to Kentucky.
Speaker 3 (01:37:17):
Up here.
Speaker 7 (01:37:19):
Yeah, they don't come this far. I was hoping they wouldn't,
you know. Somebody comes over this wave typanding drive again.
All right, I'll try because I'd love to come that
way with this and I can't remember the name of it.
They kept me in Louisiana, but they treat you're really good,
you know, so they're they're they're professionals, and and come
(01:37:40):
this way. But tally or Louisiana, my Louisiana hollers. I
gotta get him up there because he's getting really big.
Speaker 3 (01:37:51):
All right, Well, we'll see We'll see you next and
the next next weekend.
Speaker 7 (01:37:56):
Right, that's right, can't wait. We'll be there week from today.
Speaker 3 (01:38:00):
Okay, good, but thanks so much. We'll talk talk to
you the end.
Speaker 7 (01:38:05):
I see your third bye, all right.
Speaker 3 (01:38:08):

And Cheryl Spight is by by a breeders Cup champion

That same day, also at Oaklande, the Grade three count

All right, now, let's talk about sally Van. Good lord,
they've been around for years and years and years, and
of course during that time many of the greatest runners
ever to step on a racetrack have been entrusted to
their care. And that's the picture I saw of Justify
(01:47:17):
getting off sally Van. I don't know if it was
a derby or wherever, but it was very impressive. So
obviously their vehicles and equipments are in great shape and
the single most important safety factor is the ability and
experience of the guy behind the wheel. He's a driver
(01:47:40):
and a horseman. So it's what you need. You have
to do that they're back there, those horses are back
there by themselves and what to do. So think about
that the next time you load your horse into a
sally Van. You can depend on the fact that the
guy behind the wheel an experienced horseman and one of
(01:48:03):
the best in the business. They wouldn't have it any
other way at Sally, and that's why for more than
half a century Sally horse Vans had been the safest
way to the winner's circle. Their number is eight five

you dudes, just call out here. Eight five nine, two
nine three eighteen fifty three and asked about that the
