Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the home of the Wildcats. Six thirty wlap
Welcome back, Stockyards Bank, the Sunny one of Sports Talk.
I am Anthony White along with Larry Valk, coming to
you from Clark's Main Street Market Studios and beautiful downtown Lexington, Kentucky.
And at this point we're gonna unite all of the
(00:22):
clapping dogs, rhythmic dogs, harmonic dogs, house dogs, street dogs,
all of the dogs unite because we have none other
than the associate head coach, tight Ends coach recruiting quarter
Nader NFL Liaison, the Big Dog, Vince Merrill.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Good morning, coach. How's it going.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
What's up man? How you doing? Buddy? Just man woke
up about an hour ago, got back yesterday last night
about eight. Then we went over coaching house to play.
You know, have a couple of cups of kool aid
and the water and uh, you know, just watch some football,
(01:04):
watch that George Alabama game.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Coach. I gotta say Larry Valt has been singing, praise it.
I'm not gonna tell you what Larry Valk's been saying
about y'all, because I'm I'm Axle Foley and my man
bow over there is we We got the bandwagon all
geared up. Oh MISSI score seventy six points, big Dog
fifty two, forty fifty two again. Then yesterday's seventeen and
(01:31):
Yo and Yo Yo in your room came through for
the for the game winner.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
Yeah, you know what. I started to retweet Espa because
I've been watching this said, Josh Tattis has really been
playing bad the last couple of games, and I'm like,
who they talking about. Josh Kattis has played really well,
great down in the nineties, and last three games he
really did. Yesterday he just had one of them deals
(01:57):
and I, you know, I didn't like the way he
was playing, so I took him out. And then something
in my spirit told me, you know, because I'm a
ride with him. Man, he's a tough, smart, good football player.
Something told me to put him back in. And he
was in in that drive and thank god on his instinct.
I mean, it was like the ball just found him.
And that was very to be alert for that because
that could have been critical.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
And I know a lot of people are talking about,
you know, the Georgia game and some decisions made. You
guys were aggressive down there in Oxford coach Stoop's loud.
I ain't gonna say loud because you know, the fan
base things that coach Stops runs the offense and makes
them do what he wants them to do instead of
playing winning football. But we were a little more aggressive
offensively and took a little bit more opportunities. Was that
(02:43):
something you guys that planned on or was the energy
just feeling like that was the time to do certain things?
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Man, I think it was just two different scenarios. You know,
the way when we went fod or fourth and eight.
And I agree with him one hundred and ten percent.
He our defense was playing very well. That's what people
have to remember. Our defense was playing very well. We
have I really believe I see it every day. I
think we got one of the top three defense in
the country and uh bragdam guys do a really good job.
(03:12):
So the defense was with it because they knew we
had a blown but we ended up having a blown
coverage and uh, you know, still the chance to drive
back down. But I just think that in Oxford yesterday
it was like, hey, he felt you know, looking at it,
I think it was, you know, he just felt the
you know, the reason to go forward, and we backed them,
and Barryard stepped up and made a big play. We
(03:34):
got man coverage. We knew they would come after us,
and uh, you know, Barryard made a big play. Man.
So I'm just excited for our team. I'm really excited
for our coaching staff, and I'm really excited for our fans.
I know, you know people, you know, people been texting
me all man, they bad blacking about it. Man, I'm
the first thing would say. When we played South Carolina,
we played like crap. That was not us. And I
(03:57):
told h Peter Burgs when we was playing old you
pre before the game, I said, I said, let' me
tell you something, man, we about to go on a
serious run. I said, I really feel that we're our team.
Man's I thought Mark did a really good job rallying
the team and they were challenging the coaches, and I
really feel we have a really good team. And when
you look at our team get off the bus, we
(04:18):
looked just like Georgia and Alabama. And I'm not that's
not a joker. We got some large guys, we got size,
we got guys that can run. It's just you know,
we had to put it together. And you look last night.
I looked at Bama in Georgia. You know, Georgia came back,
and you know it's just I just like where we're
at right now.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Many coach, is there any type of evaluation self evaluation
coaching staff players? And you know, you know Stu, my boy,
and he was, he was mad as hell after the
South Carolina game. And I was telling you, man, hey,
I might hear telling y'all gonna win ten eleven games?
And was there a self evaluation because after this? And
I told Larry Vaught, I don't care what Larry Vaught
(04:58):
tells you, big dog. I told Larry that South Carolina
game was just one of them oops, like it that
ain't them, that's Jebson oops. And he was skeptical.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
But big dog, you I'm calling you, big dog, you man,
you are so right about that. Like after we lost
that game, it was kind of like we were in
the days and it was like, man, this because you know,
we had lost to them, and then we just knew like, okay,
we're gonna get in these guys. Tell but if you
really break down even that game, our defense played well
(05:27):
that game. Our defense played real good that game. You know,
we had four fumbles and we didn't recover none of them.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
I just think Stewkes did a really good job, you know,
challenging the team, challenging coaches, everybody in that building. And
we we know what type of team we have that
we have, so we was like, hey, let's just buckle down,
let's just go on this run and then we're gonna
let the chips forward their man. People are gonna see, okay,
this team is for.
Speaker 5 (05:54):
Real events on the areas that hadn't been talked about
a lot during these last couple of games. But the
offensive line really struggled at times, especially against South Carolina,
and why it may not have five first round draft
picks on that offensive line group right now the last
couple of games. What's kind of changed up there with
(06:16):
those guys that where now you have a chance on
offensively to go on these drafts, control the ball and
do things like that.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
Well, you know, Larry, I think people thought, okay, doctor
South Carolina. You know, we felt that we were better
than them. But South Carolina beat us, and that was
not the same South Carolina team we played in the past.
And then when you watched them play Lshuls, you got
two first round old linemen on that line, and they
gave a five sacks issue, I mean to South Carolina.
(06:46):
So I just think, you know, we played two really
good for US. Coach Eric Woffer is one of the
best old line coaches in the country. And them guys
from Eli, from the Cots Boys to Burton to Menci
to Farmer. I just think they buckled down, man, and
they said, hey, let's just go back, put her head down,
(07:06):
keep working. And you do. Guys. I'm telling you, they
come together. It's really really gonna be good. And I
just can't wait to see them play, you know, the
rest of the year.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
And coach I kind of the offense line I run
black and I don't have a problem with it. Seems
like there's a little bit of leakage in offense. And
I think Wolford runs an exotic or a professional style
offense line, which are prepared for offensive guy or for
NFL guys. But my question is not my question, but
(07:36):
it seems like Bush is getting comfortable with his units.
We saw a little bit of whimsat and people don't
give enough credit to just moving to change. My thing
has moved to change. I want three yards on them
if you design the players office a cordner to give
me three yards. But we've seen that the Bush is
trying different things. He's getting whim set involved where you
know we're going for it on on third or fourth
(07:59):
and loans or those type of things. Is Bush just
now getting into his bag or and getting familiar with
him or.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
Or or well I think Bush and we had Bush,
or he'll probably tell you the same. But I'm gonna
tell you man, Bush Hammon is a very smart dude man.
And uh, the one gift I think he has he
knows how to you know, go in and adjust to
defense of what they doing us. But the other thing
is players are going to play for him, and you
(08:27):
know we all in this together. This is our third coordinator. Uh.
I think you got to jail and mix, and I
think Bush had really really done a good job in
doing that. I think what you guys gonna see, you know,
it's great that we got to buy this week, you
gonna see us just keep going forward because here's a deal. Man.
(08:47):
I think just like they say, hey, coach, you should
get fired. What are all these guys picking wrong and
saying all this stuff? And we don't get murdered. We
don't get killed. What about these guys? You know what
I'm saying, What about these guys? And I'm gonna say this.
It's like, because it's Kentucky, I'm telling you that defense
we got is the real deal. Blade Kiffin try to
(09:09):
tell people, Kirby tried to tell people, and and Walkh
Stewart Man got them d line and rolling. I mean
he got about six seven dudes that can go get
after it. And I'm just telling you there's no doubt
in my mind. And this ain't no hype because we won.
I seen this and I knew we had a chance
because I felt we had one of the top defense
(09:31):
in the country out the SEC in the country. And
it'll show you. Like everybody keeps saying, like these national
people because they don't know Andy, we recruit just like them.
Now it's still about Jimmy's and Joe's. We got four stars.
We got a lot of four stars. Maxwell goes out,
you got Tryan Nichols, who's a four star kid? You
got my man, DJ Waller. I mean, these guys step
(09:55):
in and it's like we don't miss a beat because
we had depth. Now and I'm gonna tell you this, man,
Brad White is a bad dude. Man, he's a bad dude.
He's a bad dude. I love that defensive staff we go,
we go against the every day and I see it firsthand.
Speaker 5 (10:10):
Brother, that was Evince. Is that the defensive front? I
mean when you got here, the defensive front you got now?
Is that's the kind of defensive front you you envisioned?
And again you talk about animal, how much credit does
he deserve for that?
Speaker 3 (10:27):
Well, I'm gonna tell you when we first So first
of when we first got here, man, we had no
d line. Man, we had I mean, you know, it's
like I said, it's no knock against nobody. But man,
we couldn't even stop to run against Western Kentucky. So
you know what was gonna happen when he was going
to that SEC. But I think over the years, h
(10:47):
we recruited a type of lift and size and movement.
Like when I go get guys, and when I go
recruit guys, I don't just go recruitment there. I talked
to airwere, I talk to Brad, We say, hey, this
is what we want and then we go Uh. I
think right now, when you look at it, right now,
there's not to me a better D line in the
(11:10):
country than our D line. You tell me, you tell me.
We had played two of the tough teams already, and uh,
everybody was saying, oh, miss gonna beat this by thirty.
They're gonna do this, They're gonna do that, and they
are a really good team. But like I say again,
that defense is really good and I'm gonna get an
offense credit because we had played some good defense. Like
(11:30):
everybody was talking about our defense against Georgia. Well, Georgia
wasn't number one defense, and we did enough to keep
that game to where it needed to be to win it.
So I just think we played Copper Mary football. I
think Jay bolt War is doing a great job on
special teams. Hey and Larry, how about that tackle by
that freshman gonna kick off Willie Rodriguez, Bro, Dude, that
(11:51):
dude gonna be a monster.
Speaker 5 (11:54):
Yeah, he's gonna be a ball and he made a
pretty nice catch too.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
Yeah. Put him in that situation when the game is
on the line. I mean, that kid, don't flinch, man.
He he got great payers dads from Cuba. I mean
they just a blue collar family and uh, that kid,
you know, You're gonna see him a lot more because
he uh, you know, he just goes about his work
and he's a big, big, strong, faster guy. Man. So
(12:19):
I'm just really looking forward to getting him, you know,
more entwined in the offense as we got this break,
so he can start learning. He wouldn't been here, he
ain't been here in January. He would have been here
a couple of months. But that kid, that kid is
a he's a team player. Uh. He supports everybody on
the team. Everybody loves him on the team. So I
can't wait to see him, you know, keep going forward.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
Hey, big dog, you mind is your call? You mind taking?
Do you mind taking fun? We got callers online when
to talk to you, and we had somebody threaten another
caller on here man, So if you if you willing
to take outside, cause our screener is pretty good, man.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
I ain't worried about somebody let him call. But I'm
that dude, Jeff I heard earlier today.
Speaker 4 (13:03):
I don't even know that dude Tennessee dude.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Right, Hey, I want to beat her. I want to
beat him.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
Hey, bowl, let's get Kevin on here man. Le Let's
say what Kevin got for the big Dog, Kevin, what
do you What do you got for the big Dog?
Larry Vauder myself? I hope I'm assuming you got something
for the big Dog.
Speaker 6 (13:22):
Yeah, absolutely, Man, I appreciate everything. You know, this has
been a twelve thirteen year progress going on building this
team from a football team from the nothing in the
cupboards to a program that's the that's the difference we
got a few years ago. We got players that looked
(13:45):
like SEC caliber that they could compete, and we are competing.
And I just want to thank Big Dog and the
staff for just holding the course, believing and recruiting and developing.
And you know, I'm a fifty four years old UK
fan all my life seen a lot of ups and downs,
(14:06):
but I mean there is a lot of optimism and
promise with this team and under Stoops. If you look
at the loss that we had against South Carolina, look
at the offensive play, it's improved. And I believe if
we continue to improve, Handman gets a little bit more
(14:28):
I don't know, confidence in each game practice. You know
that it looks like it's improving that you know, he
opens up his playbooks a little bit off our offense.
Our d is a legit top top ten, probably not
even top ten, top five, and if our offensive play,
an offensive line can continue to show the steady improvement
(14:50):
that they've had since South Carolina game. I mean, we're
looking at going in on those two ugly Orange teams
and being in the game with them. If anybody would
ask at the beginning of the season, you know, or
after the South Carolina lost, you know this possibility. I mean,
I think a lot of the fan base would you know,
with a question that. But I appreciate everything you've done
(15:13):
on all the recruiting and uh, you know, I'm a
fifty four year old fan lizen Louisville, and I hear
that crap about the red talk and all this stuff.
So I just, you know, want to thank you guys,
and you know, let's handle business. And I know you
don't get looking too forward, you know, on the schedule,
but you know, this last game, I really want to
(15:34):
see a SmackDown.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
A big dog. Can you hold on? Well, go ahead
really quickly.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
I'm gonna tell him he's been living pretty good in
Louisville the last couple of years through Yes, yeah, so
that guy's man. I like to I like to respond
to him, you know when we come back.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
Yeah, we gotta we got to hit a break really quickly.
We'll be back after if we've got the big dog.
This Stockyards Bank Sunday when the sports star up on
news Radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank, Sunday morning, sports talking Anthony White
along with Larry Vaughx still hanging out with the big Dog,
Vince Merrill. We are talking UK football, big win. Stockyards
Bank is your trusted partner since nineteen oh fourth, So
a head on over to syb dot com for all
your banking and financial needs. Before we went to break
(16:32):
and we had to put you on Paul's Big Dog
and apologize for that. But you gotta pay some bills.
Kevin was showing appreciation for where the program is now.
You want to respond to that, go.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
Ahead, Yeah, I think you know somebody would you know,
really bounds to my attention. You know, guys like in
their fifties and sixties, probably when their mid forties, they
have seen what Kentucky's football was before we got here,
you know, before you know, in between you know, Rich
Brooks and Joker you know, there was a time, you know,
(17:07):
let's be honest, it was it wasn't a good program.
And the guys in their fifties and sixties and forties
steam has take you know. When we first got there, like, man,
just get us a six and six, We just want
to go to bowl game. Then we started going to
all these bowl games and going ten and three, ten
and three, nine and four, seven and five. And they
(17:27):
people up there, well, the younger generation who's in there
twenty thirties and twenties, twenty five, they had seen that
when they came here and came to college, we had
a ten and pre season, we had a nine and
four season, and so in another ten and three season,
so they like, man, why can't we go to the
(17:49):
playoffs and trust them? We definitely that's our aim to do.
But building this from my man what Kevin said, building
us from the bottom and bringing it back up in
the hardest conference in the country. It's I got against
stops a lot of credit. And Kevin Eason noticed this
(18:09):
in the last six six years. Looking at the NFL.
We have multiple guys on multiple teams. When I look
up now and I watch games, or I see guys
switching jerseys. You know, You're like, man, we have really
took this to another place and another step, and so
we're getting there. I mean, you look at it starts
with supporting you gotta I mean's going all the way
(18:30):
to doctor capalutle Minch, Mark Hill, academics, everything, nutrition, weight
room or strength coaches. Everybody got a building on the
same accord to get this right. And we got the support.
Now we got good people. That's given. Now a lot
of these other teams are budgets are bigger than ours.
(18:50):
And you see, when you coach and do hard work
and just get people believing, then you can go out
and get you know, what you need to get. But
I like the blue collar the approach we have where
we say, hey, we can go anywhere and line up
with good support behind us and go win games like this.
So Kevin, I really appreciate you, man, And uh, I
(19:12):
would just say this, get ready for this ride, because
I think our guys really really we're gonna take it
one game at a time. We're gonna put our head
down and we just ask our fans, you know, we
gotta buy it. The next week after next pack that
stadium for Vandy and let's get this thing going. Let's
let's let's take it one game at a time.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
Hey, coach, can we keep you one more segment?
Speaker 3 (19:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (19:35):
Got little sleep, all right? If hey, if you want
to talk to coach, he said he'd taking call A
five nine two eight zero two two eight seven A
five to A five nine two eight zero Cats. We'll
be back after this. Billy Rosewood Axel Foley. This is
Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning Sports Talk on news radio six
thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
This is the home of the Wildcats, six thirty w
l a P.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
Welcome back Stockyards Bank son Morning Sports Talk. I am
Anthony White along with the Great Larry Vaught busting old
miss up side the head coach Vince Marrow.
Speaker 3 (20:08):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
This is our Sunday morning sports Talks about you by
Country Boy Brewing and Big Dog. One thing about this show,
Larry Vaught loves for me to be right. And the
only thing better than Larry Vault loves me to be
writing him being wrong. Is you confirming what I was
right about and those things so I've been I've been
hogging the show. I know Larry got some questions or
(20:29):
he gonna apologize to you for what he said two
weeks ago we all lost to South Carolina and he
was hanging on the bandwagon.
Speaker 5 (20:39):
What did you, Anthony ACKs like I picked Kaku go
two and ten. I picked eight four, man, So don't
let it make you think. And I don't think I
said anything about the South Carolina game that you didn't
just say. It's just to Anthony's you know, he's a
little paranoid like that at all. But but what I
one thing I do wonder about now is over the years,
(21:00):
I'm one of those guys. I'm in the seventies, so
I watched Kentucky football for a long time, and one
consistent thing about Kentucky football is a lot of times
it's had more trouble handling prosperity than adversity. Coming off
two really good games in a row, got a bye week,
and then you got Vandy coming in with the majority
of fans are going to say, well, it's got that win,
(21:21):
let's just go on. But Vandy's pretty good this year.
So how do you go about making making sure your
guys handled prosperity just as well as they handle adversity.
Speaker 3 (21:34):
Well, that's a good question, Larry. I'm gonna go back
to you. I guess you go to the head man
and it's you know, with students. I think everybody in
that building. Uh. I hate to keep you know, talking
about it. But when we lost to South Carolina, you know,
I don't give it where it was like, well waking
it up call, but it was like, hey, we we
(21:56):
thought we were pretty good. We just got handled and
are in our home stadium in front of our fans,
and uh, it's kind of like somebody coming in your house.
You're you're a man, your wife cooked dinner and another
man come and take the play off your table and
go go outside and eat your food. So I would
I think we all looking at uh. You know, we
(22:18):
got two losses in the SEC. I don't think nothing's
not going to get our attention. And like you said,
Vandy is a much improved team.
Speaker 4 (22:28):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (22:29):
I watched him the first I mean the first week
they beat somebody. It was it was anough was it
a Big ten school or somebody? Yeah, yeah, Virginia, Yeah
in Virginia. What they did they you know what they
did the Miami You know that game came down to
the wire. So no, we we had had our Uh
now can things happen. I just know this, And I
(22:50):
heard Stoop say this, Well we lost to South Carolina
that that's just not us. Now, well we lose you
you would never see us lose a game. And we
didn't play hard like we gonna play hard every game
the one because we didn't play hard. So I'm not
worried about that. I know what kind of roster we have,
and I know what kind of young men we got
(23:10):
in that room and that buildings. So these guys want more.
They know where we trying to get done and where
we're trying to go. So you know, we were fully
Vanny got our attention fully.
Speaker 4 (23:22):
We ain't.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
Let me just say this, it's like the yard if
you ever see miracle on ice. I showed that to
our offense the night before we played Georgia, like the
five minute speech. But there was a period in there
when they got beat by a country that they were
better than, and the coach say, hey, you can't win
on Tyn alone. We're not good enough to win on
Tyler alone. You gotta have hard work and you gotta really, really,
(23:46):
you know, go at it every day. So I'm not
worried about that. You know, the students got our attention
two weeks.
Speaker 5 (23:52):
Ago, okay, And the last thing I had for you
of just kind of wondering about you come off that
loss to South Carolina. You come back for two more
home games, and the fans, especially the students, really turned
out in a big way, which I've seen years at
Kentucky that wouldn't have happened. Did that make an impact
on the on the players? Did they notice that and't
(24:12):
paying attention to that? Did that help a lot or not?
When the fans came back right like they did.
Speaker 4 (24:18):
Yeah, mar you got some good questions. Man, I'm gonna
give you a plus. Here's what I'm gonna say to you, bro.
I do think and I think this analogy. Even our
fans did, even our media people. It's like they know
we got a good team, and then soon we lost
South Carolina. Oh, they ready to cash it in, They
(24:39):
ready to beat this and that. But I think deep
down the side, they know it. Our student body know it,
our fans know it, and they was like, man, but
this team is supposed to be pretty good. I've seen them,
and so I just think to our student body, man,
they have been awesome, like they've been getting to the
games like an hour and a half before kickoff, ain't
(25:00):
be up there. I mean going nuts. But for a
whole fan, for the whole big Blue nation, where we
had that sun Miss game and I never get all
the players still talk about it when the game was
gonna start. Then we had to go back in.
Speaker 3 (25:12):
Then we come out and there's still a full house. Man,
That's what we need. That's the type of support we need.
Fans can really help you win one or two games.
And so I just say, hey, all these games that
we got at home, let's pack the house. Let's go
one game at a time. And I think they were
(25:33):
like where we're sitting that at the end of the.
Speaker 2 (25:35):
Season, coach, I feel like, man, you eat whatever is
on your plate, You put over in your plate, and
you eat that. I'm trying to figure out that that
South Carolina game, And Larry Vaught will tell you if
you talked to them off off record, off air, whatever
that I said. I played in games where I just
couldn't get my mind right, Like I just couldn't. My
concentration wasn't there. You know, these kids are human just
(25:58):
like anything else. But was there any part of that
that old Dominion game with South Carolina oops up and won.
Was that in the back of you in the players minds?
Oh man? They they they almost lost the old dominion,
like they didn't have to prepare or you just think
it was just that that mental failure.
Speaker 3 (26:17):
You know. And that's a good question, like you dealing
with eighteen.
Speaker 6 (26:21):
To twenty three, twenty four.
Speaker 3 (26:23):
Year old guys, and uh, I think that had a
little bit to do with it. I think, you know,
them having that freshman d lineman and then them getting
that transfer from Georgia Tech made them immediately, you know,
a real good contender as a defensive unit. And because
(26:44):
we didn't play them, we've seen them on film, but
it was like, okay with old dominion, right, you see
that in person? And then LSU seen that in person? Right,
And so I'm just telling you, man, and I'm gona be
honest with you, bro. You you played the game. I
think the way to the new comes football is right now.
I don't even think there's gonna be some now I'm
talking about the sec their mother little Leeds. I don't know.
(27:06):
But if this thing is like the NFL, where nobody
might not go undefeated in this lead because you can
be gat and and somebody you know, Like I'm saying, Oh,
this is a good team, bro, they gonna knock some
people off. Trust me, I don't that's a good team.
You know, South Carolina go knock some people off. So
(27:28):
it's gonna be interesting. We just gotta worry about ourselves.
But you're right, man, to answer your question, it's hard to,
you know, get my head wrapped around that. We just
had one of them games where we lost and we
did not play to the potential of who we were.
(27:48):
But that woke us up. And that's I don't care
what you say. It's all the fluke. We lose by
one point to Georgia that we ain't in the moral victories.
There was moral victories when we first got here, but
we lose the word one point that Jeordians at all.
Well maybe George ain't who they are. Yeah, Georgia is
who they are. Alabama's pretty pretty good too. So I'm
just saying, I think, you know, we just got like
(28:11):
I said, but man, we gotta take it one game
at a time, and you know, we got our we
got our hiccup, and I just think our guys, know,
you gotta come ready prepared to play every week, and
it starts with practice on Monday.
Speaker 2 (28:26):
I'm gonna let Larry Vaughton the rest of the big
Blue Nation know that me and old Billy over there
we got the We got the bandwagon rolling. You ain't
jumping back on because I told y'all on these airways.
I told him. But one thing, I think people are
a little concerned about evinces Uh, it's Chip, it's Chip.
Train him. We're gonna see him this year. I know,
(28:48):
I know stups really don't talk about injuries and those things,
but it keep getting pushed back every week.
Speaker 3 (28:55):
You know, I mean, you just gotta be ready to go.
And I would think, you know, we got this buy
so you know, now that's another you know week that
you ain't playing in another week to just let it heal.
So I'm pretty sure we gonna see him. You know
that that's out of my pay range. I ain't no doctor, man.
(29:16):
I got a lot of titles when I ain't no doctor.
So but I'll tell you this, man, I really like
the backs we got. I think Jared well will Cox
is a is a young star in a making. He
just I mean, you got understand he's a redshirt freshman
but that dude got some juice, he got some power,
and you got to see him run down on kickoffs
(29:37):
like I really do think as we go through the
year and we get chipped back like I'm saying, it's playing.
I told Dion Walker the other day, Man, I said,
you know, we were joking around, like, man, y'all got
to do this. I say, Look, I'm good friends with
Ray Lewis. I said, Race always tell people tell their offense, hey,
just score ten points. We'll take care of the rest.
(29:57):
I said, y'all got a chance. Y'all got a chance
to be a really good defense, right right. So I
put the pressure on big boy. I said, come on,
you guys, got guys, man, let's let's let's let's play
good defense, get special teams and let's play comprimary football
and let's win some games.
Speaker 2 (30:14):
And speaking of defense, and I know you said it earlier,
and uh again, I've been telling Larry, Larry has been
around sports longer than I've been living. Uh A tear
true or false? Going against your defense? Do you are
you gonna see on Saturdays any better defense than what
you see Monday through Thursday?
Speaker 3 (30:36):
Bro, Man, I'm gonna tell you that's where if you
read between the lines, I think you know that after
that's what I kind of been saying, Like we see
these dudes every day and team runs. We see these
dudes in seven on seven. Uh, Like I said that
that that defense, it's pretty good. And you got a
(30:58):
lot of guys that have no egos. Me. You know,
we rotate a lot of guys in on defense, and
they they are special unit. They just got to keep
keep coming, keep playing, doing what the coaches saying. And
like I say, I see that every day. And you
got to look at like this not throwing those schools
out there, but you got a lot of these schools,
(31:19):
they budgets were ready bigger than all. They wouldn't got this.
They wouldn't got that. We're doing it the right way,
and I think that's the way to do it. You
recruit high school good players. That's the draft, and your
draft now is anywhere from seventeen to eighteen to twenty guys.
Then you have free agency where you go sign five
(31:41):
or six guys are plugging holes and that's how you
keep and build a strong team. And that's why, you know,
I got to give credit again to a lot of
the people that give you know, from Joe to Kelly,
from Censor to a lot of guys. I mean I
can name a lot of people that people really been given,
you know, and I'm a'm Stockton Mortgage. Just people, just
(32:02):
different people, and they're allowing us to maintain our roster
first and then go out and get some guys. But
I really really liked where our program is. Can we
get better, yes, and we can we always use more help, yes,
But I'm telling you this program that stups have built,
(32:27):
I'm really when I washed it over. Being here twelve years,
A lot of people couldn't come and do this, and
I can sit in front of people before this transporporter
opened up. I can sit in front of people and say,
showed me who could have came and did this. Because
you have to have connections. Number one, you got to
get you got to be able to know people in
Ohio as you know to Anthony, you got to put
(32:49):
a fence around Kentucky. And then you go out and
I got said Michigan, Tennessee. You go out of them circles.
But you've got to take care of Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee.
Like going to get a couple of guys out of Tennessee.
I don't think nobody could have did that because in
the beginning, most of our roster was built off a
lot of good Ohio players. And then at Kentucky football
(33:11):
started increasing the coaching. Now you've got four or five
six kids that can play here. So I really I
can say, man, I really take my hand off to
people who support us, the support we get from our administration.
I think Mitch's Mitch get a lot of flak man,
But I'm telling you, Mitch, you look at the coaches
Mitch have hired here. He has really did a good job.
(33:31):
And you know, we we thank him every day for
he's very very supportive of a him, Him and Mark
Hill and that the whole administrative staff. So I'm just excited.
I'm ecited for our fan base more than anybody. I'm
e cited for our fan base to get that win
and hire. They celebrated. I don't want to know all
(33:52):
how they celebrated, but celebrated.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
The coach. Before we get you out of here, me
and old Billy Rosewood is we got the bandwagon roller?
Are you taking y'all taking any more passengers? Or me
and Billy just need to put our medal pedal to
the medal.
Speaker 3 (34:11):
Man, let me say it. You know, my dad was
a messier and I'm gonna use an old phrase that
my granddad should say when he refers to Christ. People
always gonna jump on and off, but people always, you know,
God always gonna have his hands open and say, I'm
gonna take you back. How I feel about our fan base.
This is why I've been here twelve years. These people
(34:32):
are they are a good fan base, a hungry fan base.
So let's get on back on and let's start packing
the stadium and let's see what happens. Let's see what happens.
But we always want these guys back on board because
you know what, believe it or not, I know from
students going down, to our staff, to our players we
play for, there can be celebration and people feeling good
(34:56):
about UK football. I remember years ago that wasn't the case,
and all I was saying was, Man, we gotta go recruit,
we gotta go do this, we gotta go do that
because people ain't gonna keep beating us the way they
used to beat us in the past, and we're gonna
be celebrating our fans gonna be celebrating going to their stadiums,
and I really believe this is where we're at. And
we just want guys to just just support and believe
(35:20):
we will put a good product out there and we
will never not play with passion ever again. These guys,
these guys are ready to go, and we just say, hey,
just come out and support us, and let's see. Let's
see what happened. You know me, Larry, I got a hunch,
but I'm gonna keep that in a couple of weeks,
and then I tell you guys, when I come back.
Speaker 5 (35:41):
On, Okay, we'll mark it down for a couple of weeks.
Get you back on okay.
Speaker 3 (35:46):
Yep, yep, yep. I really appreciate you guys. Man. It
really was a great experience coming back on that plane.
You know, it's a great feeling when you go in
to a hostile environment and it's just two hundred people,
we all together on one accord, and you go and
you get out of there, and you do on that plane.
It's one of the best celebrations coming back and we
(36:06):
thank our fans and we think, you know, I thank
you guys too. Man, Hey, big dog, I know you.
I know you were down with it, Larry. I was
listening a little bit, but you know you're my guest,
so I'm gonna just wait, just wait, Larry, Larry, I
know you said we would win eight games though, I
remember you said that.
Speaker 2 (36:25):
Yeah, coach, coach, Man, we appreciate you.
Speaker 3 (36:28):
Man.
Speaker 2 (36:28):
We're gonna let you. I'll go enjoy the win. Man,
get back to work. I know y'all getting back to
work this afternoon.
Speaker 3 (36:33):
Man.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
We appreciate you joining us this morning.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
All right, man, you guys have a blessed day.
Speaker 2 (36:37):
Man, all right, have it gooon. We'll be back after this.
You're listening to Stockyards Bank Sunday Morning sports Talk on
news radio six thirty WLAP.
Speaker 1 (36:44):
This is the home of the Wildcats. Six thirty w
LAP back Stockyards Bank Sunday, wanting sports talk. I'm Anthony
White along the Great Larry Vaught, just finishing up a
segment with the Big Dog, Vince Meryll. I appreciate him
for joining us.
Speaker 2 (37:02):
We ain't got a whole lot of show left, h
Larry Vaught, appreciate you for getting the Big Dog on. Man.
People are texting me they liked the conversation between me
and a Big Dog. Me and him just need to
do a show. We could be like Skip Bayless and
Shannon Sharp. I don't know which one of us would be,
uh witch, but uh we got about a minute. Larry
(37:25):
Vaught your thoughts on Big Dog, Good Good Radios as always.
Speaker 5 (37:32):
Yeah, huh. I like the optimism. I mean, I like
his honesty always. I like the fact that he said
that he wants to be back on with us in
a couple of weeks to talk about more big things.
I'm all for it. So but like I always appreciate
him taking the time to do that with us.
Speaker 2 (37:47):
Why you didn't tell him so, Why you didn't tell
him the stuff you was telling me, how you didn't
believe in him and all that stuff. I know you
ain't afraid.
Speaker 5 (37:55):
I never said I didn't believe. I just said that
after they lost to South Carolina, I was a little
worried about what might lie ahead. But they righted the ship.
Speaker 2 (38:03):
Who was that call? If somebody did so? Actually, uh, Daniel,
maybe Daniel or Mark, one of them said, we are
exactly where we expected to be. No matter what, Larry,
we are at this point in the season. We are
exactly So you still think we're gonna lose two more games,
and that's what you should have told, big Dog, but.
Speaker 5 (38:24):
Well you didn't. How many I said eight and four.
How many teams in the country would probably lose if
they play at Tennessee and Texas. That's why I said
all on they could be eight four and have a
great season, because it's been said, nobody's going undefeated in
the SEC. It's a tough, tough league.
Speaker 2 (38:39):
Anthony, I don't know. That is Larry Vaught. We appreciate
him both. Robinson, Jack Pilgrim. Like you said, we had
the big dog on here, Billy Rosewood, Axel Foley, I'm
Anthony White. We are out of here. This is Socky
