brought to you by Venue Kings. Visit venue kings dot

SOFTI and dinner.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Hey big thanks for our friends at venue kings dot com. Again.
Whatever it is you're looking for Seahawks and the Dogs
and the fall Mariners and a stretcher, venue Kings dot
com can set you. Man. Great to see Brett Boone
in person was up here helping us out at Sahali
on Monday and our annual American Cancer Society tournament. We
raised over four hundred thousand dollars for an awesome cause
(00:40):
on Monday and Brett was a huge part of that.
Brought a jersey, brought a ball signed by the Boons,
him and his brother and his dad Bob that went
for a lot of money at auction. So Booney, thank
you for all your help. Man. It was great to
see a Monday pal. You got it.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Yeah, it was ended up being a good group up
I was telling I was telling Jackson an overachieving group.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
We were.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
We didn't finish in the money, but a good time,
good cause you did a great job and raise a
lot of money.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Man, that was great, It was awesome. Last night was
not great. It was the opposite of great. Whatever the
opposite of grade is terrible. That was last night. Man.
Mariners are about to if they don't win and night
get swept by the Tigers. And I guess, I guess
the question really became yesterday. How come Jimmy and Andres Munoz,
we're sitting in the bullpen when you're down by one
of the ninth inning and you give the ball to
(01:29):
a guy and Jonathan Hernandez who has been terrible and
he's so bad the Mariners just let him go today.
I mean, what do you need to see to go
to your best relievers when you're trying to protect a
one run deficit and not make it a four run deficit.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Well, I think you get to a point where you know,
and once again, I'm never you know. I'm not down
on the ground, so I don't see the day to day.
I don't have the conversations that go on before the game.
So I don't like to speculate and just hammer people
for their decisions at this stage.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
I mean, I'm I'm at where are we at the
eighth of the eighth of August. I'm at all hands
on deck at this point because the way this is
shaping up, it's not oh, if we don't win the division,
you know, we still got a wildcard.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
I don't think there's gonna be a wildcard team that
comes out of this division. So it's going to be
win the division at all costs.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
And I think.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
From like here on out, you got to kind of
play like do or die, because you know, they're both
playing subpar baseball them in the Houston Astro. It seems
like Texas doesn't want to make a move. But for me,
if my guns are available and I got a chance
to at least keep it there, and they end up
losing six to two, and School's great of he's having.
You know, he's a cy young candidate this year and
(02:42):
he's a great pitcher. But three to two, I still
got a chance. So for me, like I said, I
don't know what went on before the game. I'm not
on the ground. I don't know those internal conversations that
he may have had with Munno's before the game. Uh,
you know he was going to be down that night.
Who knows, who knows, But that closed that late for me.
(03:04):
And I know we're seven weeks away from the finish line.
But for me, it's it's playoff from here on out
because you gotta win the division. I think it's shaping
up that way. There's not gonna be a wildcard team
that comes from this division. I don't think well.
Speaker 5 (03:16):
And Brett, there's no shame in losing to schoobl There's
no shame in losing the Wheeler a few nights ago.
And geinst Phildel Philadelphia is the first game against Detroit.
I mean that's the one where you're facing a guy
that's got a six e R and you make him
look like Cy Young. I mean he only gives up
four hits and six innings and strikes out eight. And
but what happened in that game at the end was
another managerial decision. You've got Rayley, who'd homeward earlier in
(03:40):
the game, He's coming up in the ninth in a
close game. Guy on he's the tying run at the plate,
and you yank him for Mitch Garver, a guy that
is clearly not only struggling at the plate, but also
struggling between the ears based upon what we heard from
him last week. So I mean, is at what point
do you go away from numbers that say, Okay, Mitch
(04:01):
Garver's better to that against the lefty than Luke Raley
is and just play the hotter hand.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
Right well, I mean that that's a gut that's a
gut decision right there. You know, he's he's looking things
he's seen with Garver, and he's seen things he's seen
with with Rayley in that particular situation that matchup, and
he makes a gut decision. I think that sometimes that work.
Sometimes you get a guy, especially struggling, throw him in
least he's he might have been the least guy expecting
(04:27):
that right now with how his season's going, and sometimes
the element of surprise gets you and all of a
sudden you get a knock and you're off to the
races and you finish strong once again. To speculate on
managerial decisions in that situation, I don't know. I mean,
it's too tough for me to sit there. It's it's
really easy sitting on the couch saying, yeah, should have
done this, should have done that, but being on the ground,
(04:49):
living with these guys, knowing the temperament, knowing that what's
going on in the dugout, and that vibe you're getting
from individual players. That's why I always talk about managing.
It's not about the the moves you make. Some of
the moves you don't make, or sometimes when you don't
follow what the data says. I think that's when you
really go on a limb and become a great manager.
(05:09):
Is the guys that just don't go data. Anybody can
go data. You know, you can put any any guy
in a seat and just say, hey, follow this computer
the whole game. You'll never be questioned because everybody will say, oh, yeah,
you did what the computer said. So I think, you know,
give them a little slack on that, uh in that
situation for me. But to me, they went two out
of three. They went two out of three for Philly.
Here's here's my point. Right now, this this stage of
(05:31):
the season, this is a scary stage because you're facing
guys like Detroit. Okay, Detroit's kind of waved the white flag.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
They're done.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
They got nothing to lose, they got nothing to lose
playing these teams and their season right now is knock
at Seattle, beating Seattle's butt right and knocking them out
of first place. Those are the dangerous teams Philly, Seattle,
Seattle handle business. Went in two out of three for Philly,
even though Philly is not at their best right now.
That's a big that's a big series win for the
Seattle Mariners. And then floating in to Detroit, you expect, oh,
(06:01):
that's an easy two out of three. Well you're fine,
and it's not. So it's a dangerous time. Watch these teams,
the Oaklands of the World and the Angels of the
World Miami. Watch these guys because when you're out of
it and you kind of know you're out of it,
you got nothing to lose, and you lay it on
the line in those teams sometimes late and they get
a lot of joy at of knocking off the top dogs.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Well, it's funny you brought that up, man Brett Boone
with us courtesy Avenue Kings. I asked Dick and Jackson
earlier today, you're a half game out right now, would
you take a half game out with a week to play?
And both of them, and I think I did too,
said yes. The Mariners though, have a series against the
Astros at Houston in the last week, and they play
the A's I believe here in Seattle, and the Astros
(06:50):
have the Guardian. So you're saying, look, Astros schedule looks tougher,
but don't discount Oakland at the end of the year.
Would you take a half game out with a week
to play right now, let's just fast forward to September
twenty fifth today.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
No, I think they're better than that. I think they're
better than that because Seattle is the only team that
has the ability each and every night to be in
the game, and those other teams don't from a pitching standpoint.
So I'm going to take my chances with a team
that gives me a chance to win every single night.
Woo's proven to be when healthy, kind of the street stopper.
(07:26):
So tonight you got Wu. You gotta win this game tonight.
Wolve's coming off seven ning scoreless, he's last out against
Philly and he's the stopper. But no, I'm not going
to take that half game out because I think the
guys I'm competing against in Texas. You know I've been
mentioned in Texas. It is de grama and then all
of a sudden, Sures goes on the fifteenth day. I
l I just don't think they have enough in them
(07:49):
to finish this. I've been holding on for a while,
but is Texas going to make a move?
Speaker 2 (07:53):
Are they?
Speaker 5 (07:53):
Are?
Speaker 2 (07:53):
They?
Speaker 3 (07:53):
De Gram isn't back, Sures are goes down. So I'm
kind of focusing on Houston now and Erlander's still out.
So you know, you got Kakuchi. He can be good,
but but he's very gettable too. You know, Valdez is tough,
brown Blanco brown for the first time, having a really
good year. But for me, I'm gonna take my staff
the Seattle Mariners and give me a chance. Every night,
(08:16):
I got a chance to be in the ball game,
and usually are in the ballgame with this, with this crew.
Speaker 5 (08:21):
Of five, Well here's what I'm hoping for. And tell
me if I'm nuts or a yeah, or I'm tracking
with you. I think that you just have to tread
water until Julio and JP Crawford get back. Now. I
understand it's not Showhy and Mike Trout in their prime,
but it's better than what you got in there right now, right,
So if you're treating me that, if you tread water
(08:44):
and stay with Houston for the next three four weeks,
however long it takes to get those guys back.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
I think you can put.
Speaker 5 (08:51):
Together a run with a fully healthy offense in the
last three weeks of the season.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Do you buy that?
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Absolutely? Absolutely? And I think when you get you know,
with the acquisitions with Rose Arena, with Turner, adding a
healthy Julio and a healthy Crawford. Although they've all if
you look at all four of them concluding the guys
came up, they're all having down years. But the four
of them back Julio, you know right now, for me
(09:18):
the last seven weeks, if you were to come back
this week, they're talking about him maybe coming back in
d h in a little bit before he goes out
and play center field again. And and let's not rule
out Roeblaze either. So you've got other than Roeblaze is
having his best year he's ever had in the Big Lades,
but the rest of them are having down years per
their bubblegum card, with Julio by far having the biggest ceiling,
(09:41):
the biggest chance to have a flurry to finish in
the next seven weeks. Getting them back healthy Crawford's had
a reel down year, hunting around two hundred, and he's
been there all year. But I've seen Crawford and I've
seen his ability at the top of the lineup. He
has a flair for the dramatic. He has big at
bat zac gui situation. I want Crawford at the plate
every time. I don't care if he's two six, two nine,
(10:01):
two oh one. Crawford shows me the biggest professional at
bats when he's got a situation to take care of,
moving a runner, getting a runner in for third. Lesson
to Crawford is that for me? Yes, down year, but
having him back at the top, who knows, he may
catch fire. The new guys that came over maybe gives
him a little bit of adrenaline and when he gets
back along with Julio, you know, I saw Julio at
(10:23):
the soiree, you know. Before I went to Softy, I
had another I had another charity event that I went
to with all the current players and they were all
bouncing around and pretty pretty smiley, except for Gilbert, you know,
because he pitched a great game against Philly. They ended
up losing a wheeler that day. But uh yeah, I
think with those two back. If everything, if everybody just
(10:44):
plays decent for the rest of the year. Offensively, they
can't play terrible, but they played decent. I think with
that pitching staff, I don't want that half game. I'm
not gonna take it. I'm gonna I'm gonna roll the
dice and think we're better than that, and we're better
than Houston at this point. August Day two, twenty.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Four, Brett Boone, Brett Boone's with us, got a calendar
in front of him, by the way, which that's always
great to be prepared for these radio hits. So good
on you for that. Most time runs by a catcher
through the first four seasons in MLB history. Cal Raley
is number four. He's four home runs away from tying
Johnny Bench for third most all time after four years
(11:22):
in the history of baseball, and he's nine away from
getting Mike Piazza for number one. I mean, at what point,
and I don't know if they've done this or not,
and who knows if Scott Boris will accept it. At
what point if you're the Mariners, do you just put
a massive offer in front of cal Raley that he
can't turn down.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
I really like Raleigh, and I think the Mariners, you know,
powers that be. I think they like him too. And
we've talked about this a lot with Yeah, we know
what Roley brings power wise. He's headed towards another thirty
home run season. For catchers, that's very rare. There's a
couple that are capable in the big leagues right now,
the kid in Kansas City being a rushman in Baltimore,
(12:02):
Smith maybe on a perfect year in LA. But other
than that, these are these are rare things, thirty home
run hitting catchers. But the most important thing for me
was Raleigh and and he just he's durable. He handles
that staff, and that staff is so important, and it's
so important when you have five horses like they do,
(12:23):
to have a catcher that they really rely on and
really trust, you know. I saw that with Dan Wilson,
and when I was playing, I enter I didn't give
it as much credit as as was necessary to the
catching position. The more the more I get away from
the game and I watch how important that catcher and
a catcher that is on the same wavelength as his
pitching staff and pitchers that come to the ballpark and
(12:45):
they like who they're throwing to. That's kind of priceless
because you've seen through the years, you see the big
time number one guys they have their own personal catcher
and you always think why is that? But but Raleigh
seems to to really have the favor of this staff
as a whole. So that combined with the with the
potential thirty home run power on a yearly basis, I'd
(13:08):
like I'd like him to get a little better with
his strikeouts and a little bit better of control on
his own, but he's so young that might come in time. Yeah,
if I were them, I think he's he's putting himself
in a position where he's kind of a staple in
Seattle right now. You know, Julio's the main guy that
they've got locked up for a lot of years. But
I think Raleigh if there's a number two for me
(13:28):
right now, as far as the backbone of that team
and guys you can rely on, it's cal Rowley.
Speaker 5 (13:34):
You mentioned Roblay a couple of minutes ago, and I
asked you about him. I don't know where when he
started getting warm about three weeks ago or so, and
you're kind of like, we got to see more. Have
you seen enough that he's a starter for you every day.
And secondary question what position should he play when Julio
comes back? And what position should Julio play when he
(13:56):
comes back?
Speaker 3 (13:58):
Well, Julio's got to play center field, and a Rosemary
is going to be left, so that that leads a
position that's right few so Roadblakes got to play right
and and the thing for me, And when I said
that a few weeks ago, like, no, I need to
see more. Well, he's twenty seven years old. He's been
in the big leagues a long time. I remember when
(14:19):
Roblays came up, and he came up right after I
believe it was Soto and he was going to be
They were touting him like, yeah, this Sodo kid's unbelievable,
but this Roblaze kid. Did I remember my dad was
VP of the Nationals at the time. He was ranting
and raven about this road Blazed kid, and I talked
him a few years later because yeah, he's just not
getting it done. So usually some guys it takes a
(14:43):
long time. It takes till they're twenty seventh to kind
of figure it out. And okay, now I'm a different player,
but it's it's it's more the uh, it's not the normal,
you know, it's not the usually what you see is
what you get, and he's playing good right now. Let's
just take that. Hopefully he continues to play well, has
a really good year for the Seattle Mariners, and then
next year kind of has found his stride. But as
(15:06):
far as seeing anything major, yes for me on this.
On this Mariners team, he is a starter.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
Yeah, he's played thirty games and right in his career
and it's not a lot, but he's got some time out.
Speaker 5 (15:17):
Well. The reason I said that is yeah, go ahead,
go ahead. I was just gonna say, you know, we
talked to Steven Sus about it on Monday, and he
thinks Julio, at least for the time being when he
gets back, if the rest of the year, moving to right,
keep Roblason center field. Maybe limit Julio's ability to you know,
when he's not totally healthy, Maybe work him into right
field for a while.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Well, this is a conversation that goes on with Scott
Servis and Julio because as much as we don't want
to believe it, this is this is much more than
just hey, Julia, you go over there and like it.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
I believe.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
You know, he's twenty two years old. He's a kid,
he's a great kid and a ton of ability. But
you also got to take in consideration how he feels
about it. It's like taking a young Ken Griffith Junior.
You're gonna go play right, Well, Kenny's gonna give you
the swivelhead and go what I do, Ken Griffyth Junior,
I don't play right. So as long as Julio, you know,
(16:13):
if it's a health thing and they have a conversation
and Scotty and him work it out and he needs
to go to write and he's happy with it and
ready to play every day, well then then he can
go to right. But you don't just tell star players, oh,
you're gonna play over there, and you know, some guys
you piss him off and they play better. Some guys
you piss him off and they quit. Now I'm not
(16:36):
Scott Servis. I don't know these guys. I don't live
with these guys. I don't know the personalities. I tell
Jay Buner, I pissed Jay Buner off in my day.
Jay's gonna play better despite me. But if I piss
another guy off, he'll right, he'll go into the corner,
into the fetal position and suck with something. I gotta
know who I'm dealing with, so that you know that's
an internal thing that happens. You got to take into
(16:56):
consideration of rose arena. You want him to play good,
Uh the normal sense be Julio's the man, he's the centerfielder.
So when he's healthy, and like I said, they're talking
about him dhent a little bit before he's healthy, I
think he goes to center field because he's happy there.
The arena is happy and veteran left and Roblaze right
now is just getting a second win and a second
(17:17):
chance at his big Ley career, and he's probably happy
to go wherever he needs to go just to be
in that lineup every day. And that's when I talk
about managing. And the important part of managing isn't the
X and o's, isn't the put the left and put
the right, And it's handling these type of positions. So
all three of my starters in the outfield are all
smiling and skipping to the ballpark because they all just
want to play and win.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
Who sucked this thumb in the fetal position?
Speaker 3 (17:41):
Well, I think, oh, look at my teams in the
early two thousand. Look, well, you know me, I would
never put somebody on blast on the radio, but I
played with him. Guy, all right, you won't put it
on the radio.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
God darn it, san Diego Padres.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
I'll go off and sign a side deal with Venue K.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
Two thousand, Wiki Gonzalez, Phil Nevian, Al Martin. Al Martin
sucked his thumb. Al Martin thought he was a football
star for usc too and had nine wives.
Speaker 6 (18:17):
He did well, No, he was just a he he
he fabricated the truth a bit. But Al's ready to
play every day. I was ready to play, all right,
got it?
Speaker 2 (18:27):
All right?
Speaker 5 (18:28):
Good?
Speaker 3 (18:28):
See guys, Okay, there's a guy in guy in Atlanta,
and you know a few guys in Atlanta, a few
guys in my Cincinnati days, and at a couple guys
in the early two thousands Mariners. Okay, now you can
go through that and have some guesses.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
Wowy, just do it. I got one. We're gonna do it,
and we're gonna text you and see if we're right
of the money. All right, dude, great stuff. We're talking
a week.
Speaker 3 (18:50):
See. Thanks.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
So look at that early two thousands, merit a roster.
Two thousand and one, let's just go two thousand and two.
I got what I'm sending to him right now, two Mariners.
What player was most likely to get into the fetal
position and suck his thumb?
Speaker 3 (19:06):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (19:06):
I got a guy too, I got it. We'll talk
about off here. Is it the guy that played the corner.
We're gonna break, We're gonna break. We're gonna hear from
Mike McDonald and Scott's service coming up in the next
half hour right here on ninety three to three kJ RFM.
