Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the NFL Draft.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
Now back to the Virginia Mason Athletics Center and the
twenty twenty five NFL Draft, and brought to you by
Coors Light, by rn R Foundation specialists, the Queen Anne
Beerho and by Fox thirteen on Sports Radio ninety three
point three KJR FM.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
All right, welcome back in Sports Radio ninety three point
three KJR FM. He interness with you, and I'm sitting
here probably a room that our next guest knows very well,
the Defensive Meeting Room up on the second floor of
the Virginia Mason Athletic Center. It's where the media is
stationed for the draft, which begins tonight five o'clock Pacific time.
Our coverage here in KJR goes until nine pm. Same

(00:48):
thing tomorrow starts at nine am on Saturday. I want
to take people back in time. The year is twenty ten.
The Seahawks, under John Schneider and Pete Carroll their first
ever draft. They've taken Russell okungof defensive tackle from Oklahoma
State with the sixth overall pick. They have a second
pick in the first round, and at number fourteen they're
sitting there. They need a safety. We all know they

(01:09):
need a safety. People in Seattle are saying, we gotta
get Taylor Mays, he played for PTE at USC. We
gotta get that guy. And instead they go up to
the podium and they say, with the fourteenth pick, the
Seattle Seahawks take from Texas, the University of Texas Hookham
horns Earl Thomas. And there were people saying, what's gonna
happen here? Well, you know what, I'll tell you what
happened here. I'm gonna give you a spoiler alert because

(01:30):
all this guy did, all he did during his career,
besides winning Super Bowl, was be a five time ap
All Pro player and a seven time Pro Bowler. He
is back with us for the first time on KJAR
in a long time. Earl Thomas, How the hell are you?

Speaker 3 (01:44):
I'm doing really good. That was a really really warm
welcome right there. I really appreciate that.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
Hey, can you first of all, do I know how
it is because every time any of us in the
media interviewed you for ten years, you told us that
you had a chip on your shoulder. Earl, Well, you
were a first round pick, buddy, you got picked fourteenth overall. Man,
Why do you have a chip on your shoulder, but
you played like that all the time, and I'm sure
part of it is you probably heard of people saying
they should take Taylor Mays. What do you remember about

(02:11):
that night sixteen years ago? What do you remember about
draft night?

Speaker 3 (02:15):
Yeah, I just wanted to be around family. I made
sure I just had it at my church. My grandfather
built that church brick by brick, so I wanted to
show him some appreciation. He was sick at the time.
He ended up passing away a little bit after the draft,
but I definitely wanted to spend some time with him
and Coach's family. So it was a great night. All
the cameras and the ESPN crew. They came down to Orange,

(02:37):
Texas to be with me, to make sure that the
world got to see me get drafted at fourteenth pich
in the first round. So it was a really good experience.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
You came to Seattle. Do you remember the call? Did
Pete call you? Did John call you? What do you
remember from that night?

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Yeah, So I remember talking to Coach Carroll. I remember
talking to Coach Carroll before I even got drafted. We
actually had lunch basically my Prode Texas PRODA so he
just took me behind scenes and said that he was
really interested in drafted me, and he said if I
would be there, he would take me, and he ended
up doing that. So I'll definitely remember those conversations that

(03:15):
I had with Coach Carol right before I got drafted.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
It's amazing, Earl, because you came in and it was
the way he wanted to put that defense together. And
it took a couple of years because you know, then
in twenty ten, they took a guy named Cam Chancellor
much later in the draft, and then you know, a
couple of years later and a year later they took
a guy you might have heard of him, Richard Sherman,
good player, kJ Wrights twenty twelve, some guy named Wagner,

(03:39):
Bobby first name, all those guys, but you were the key.
Did he tell you, hey, man, this is how I
want to build a defense. I need a guy that's
going to play center field and be out there. I
need Earl Thomas. I need your skill set.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
All right. So I knew that coach would do a
good job of putting the right pieces around me. Like
you said, we uh Premier cover three, and they gave
me a lot of room to uh adjust the plays
diagnosed plays uh be over the top, so our big
corners can press these guys and you know, catch out interceptions.

Speaker 4 (04:13):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
Also with Cam I'm just understanding how big he is
and you know the threat that he brought to the defense.
So yeah, I'm new. Coach Carroll was putting all the
pieces around me, just like he did with Russell Wilson.
You wanted the rest to have a you know, good
old lineman, uh, some good receivers and you know Marshawn
Lynch that he can depend on. So it was the
same thing on defense.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
It is Earl Thomas joining us here on the beaconplonent
Holland Jesse, do you have our surprise?

Speaker 3 (04:36):
I do.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
You might have known him, Earle. I think he might
have coached you a little bit, and he had a
hell of the season last year with the Commanders. Do
you remember Earl Thomas? Do you remember a guy named
Dan Quinn?

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Yes, I remember Darani Quicker. Here's my defartinator.

Speaker 4 (04:49):
Earl Thomas is one of the very best night even
say like this is a long list and some Hall
of famers I coached. He's one of the the very
best competitors I've ever met my entire life like an
absolute badass. From the time I saw him working out
at at Austin, he ran like a four or four

(05:10):
at the combines, so I'm gonna do better. Busted his
ass ran like four to three at Austin. And I
remember going back to Seattle say, man, like, I would
so love to coach this guy.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Holy and h.

Speaker 4 (05:22):
Means the competitive nature that and the standard that he
set has left it.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
You know, such an impression on.

Speaker 4 (05:30):
To me about what greatness and competing and going for
it at the highest level can look like. And it's
it's not for everybody, but for the guys that are
about it like Earl's about it, and uh, man, it's
such a high standard. So when I heard you Ron,
I'm calling from DC, and I said, that's a real

(05:50):
one right there, Earl.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
What does that mean to hear that from coach the
day of the day of the draft? Man, what does
that mean to hear from him?

Speaker 3 (05:58):
It means a lot, so you could tell. And it's
confidence he knows who he is as a coach. You
could tell he's gonna have a long coach career. That's
why so complimentative with me. Just telling in the spirit,
so you know, he trusted his game and he understands competitors.
We talked about some Michael Jordan books, because you know,
Michael Jordan is one of the best, greatest competitors ever.

(06:20):
And we talked about just being a cleaner, and that
was just me just keeping the post clean, making these
tacles look normal. You know, when I have opportunities for
tipping over those catch interceptions, get those big great communicator,
helping guys get lined up, diagnosed the places before, what happened,
stuff like that. But you know, d d Q, he
was a great motivator. He always talked about that boxing

(06:43):
mentality and uh, you know, the whole room. We took
that mentality and we bought it to the field, and
we was hard to deal with every time we stepped
out there. Dan.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
I know you're busy, Dan. We appreciate calling in.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Man.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
This is awesome. Great, Hey, congratulations on the hell of
a year last year. You got a lot of fans
out here Seattle. Still you know that just at the
top of the list, some guy named Wagner still plays
for you. Along the way, Hey, Dan, let me wrap
it up this real quick. We're reminiscing with Earl. So Dan,
I'll let you get the last word before we turn
the loose. Just what was that defense? When we look
at that those guys I hear about the Ravens defense

(07:15):
back in the in two thousand. What have you the
Bears and all that? Dan, You've been around this game
for a long time. What is it about Earl and
that defense that just separated them from everybody else?

Speaker 4 (07:23):
I would say, their relentlessness and connection together was unmatched,
Like you got one like there. There wasn't anybody that
they wouldn't fight for. And Uh as a coach to
watch that, to see that and the standard that they
set for himself, it was amazing. I can remember, and
Earl will.

Speaker 3 (07:44):
Tell the story.

Speaker 4 (07:44):
We were in another team's facility getting ready to practice
and they had a stat on the wall that was,
you know, don't allow selling such points and others. Earl
and one of the guys say, man, we got to
take that down like the golfore morning, the goal is
no points in a game. I said, damn right, bro.
And so Uh I would say, they taught me a

(08:07):
mindset of like what a group can do together. And Uh,
I've been chasing it ever since, man, because uh, it's
like it's powerful a thing. When you're a part of
something like that and you see it, you feel it.
There may not be a metric on it, but like
it's you can it's the easiest thing to see in
the world. So he's one of one. Man, I'm glad
you're on with him. And uh, just hearing what a

(08:29):
real competitor looks like, sounds like, feels like he's rare.
So all you guys enjoy tonight, and I gotta i gotta.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
Kick back to this preparation.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
I'm out, all right, thanks to.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
Appreciate it, Bob yea. Yeah, so the commanders were very
sneaky good this year, so I'm very very proud. He's
showing he can do it anywhere you go.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
So you gotta love that. You gotta love that, Earl.
Just uh, what what would your advice be the young
guys coming out tonight, you know, in the next couple
of nights in the draft that are coming in. I
mean everyone's a star in college like you were. You
came out as at a really young age. What would
an elder Earl Thomas like to be telling an Earl
Thomas back in twenty ten.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
Yeah, I would just say, uh, just get the directions
down on what's expected of you, because you got to
go through the interview process. They got to basically let
the city know that you're you're actually part of the team.
People want to see your face. So I would just say,
just get with the people that you need to get
with and make sure you got a good itinerary.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
Earl, what was your favorite I mean, winning a Super Bowl?
I know number one, But when you look back on
your time in Seattle, what what are some of the
things that pop out? Is it the teammates, is it
the coaching staff, the fans? What is it about your
time here in Seattle that was so specialies besides the
fact that you've got to ring my friend?

Speaker 3 (09:47):
Yeah, it was just a I think what makes Seattle
so SUSI it was it was an opportunity for me
to showcase my skills. I think I did that. I
think I got to play a great group of great
group of guys and we're still bunny to this day. Yeah.
I just just basically got to show how good I
was and to say that nobody was thinking about Seattle.

(10:09):
We was weaving in this corner and to see all
the success that we put out there over the years.
That's that's what I think about to today. So when
I'm walking around Orange, my hometown, or here back in Seattle,
people are gonna always remember they stop and say, hey,
I had to sign some autographs at the at the
air for as soon as I stepped out the airplane.
And I haven't been back in Seattle since twenty eighteen,

(10:30):
so that was really good for me to see I
still have fans out here.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
Well, you're beloved, you know. The next step is a
ring of honor. I mean, at some point it's gonna
be Canton, Ohio. It should be Canton, Ohio. But at
some point we're gonna see you up there in that
ring of honor here in Seattle.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
Yes, that's that's always been a goal I saw. I
saw Steve Largin you know, Jersey hanging up there every
every home game. So I always told myself that's what
I wanted. So I'm glad that you bought it up.
So we can keep putting that, putting it out there
to the universe and it's gonna work up.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
Well, I'm screaming from the mountaintops, man, I mean, you're
like I have people all the time. When I'm doing
radio shot, it hits from people across the country, like,
hey man, you know Russell Wilson let him to the
super Bowl or so and so. I said it was
a collective effort. But I'm telling you right now, there's
a handful of guys that don't win the Super Bowl
with and you know thirty one and twenty nine and
the secondary twenty five, Big Mike Cliff, some guy named Marshawn.

(11:23):
You might have heard of him. I heard he was.
What was he like to practice against by the way, Marshawn?
And did he just kind of chill and do his
own thing?

Speaker 3 (11:30):
It depends. It depends. Some days. I think he just
listens to his body really well. So but here here'll
give us some great looks. He gave me some great
opraen Field Tallco situations where he just put his head
down and he wanted to see if Earl was tough.
So I did my job of just standing my ground,
standing them up a little bit. And you know, thoose
form TECs that I had in the game, it comes

(11:52):
from all the type of situations where I visualize it
and then it happens.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
And one final thing for you, You played next to
the man sure the one of the baddest dudes to
ever play in the in the National Football League? What
what was what was it like and what was your relationship?
And it just felt like there was a natural chemistry
between you and Cam Chancellor.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
Yeah, it definitely was a national chemistry. Uh. He just
has that that that carrying attitude because he's so big.
I think that just comes with the territory of a
tall guy like a center. He always want to protect
everybody around him. Uh and just be just being the
best attitude possible because you know what he brings to
the game, and that's just that pounding mentality. Uh you

(12:33):
know that enforcer. Uh, the running back is gonna be
thinking about where Cam Chancellor is. Uh tight ends, they
do the same thing. So yeah, he just you just
have that that nature about him that everybody on the
team gravitated towards. And you know, I used to play quarterbacks,
so he's he's a very smart football player.

Speaker 1 (12:50):
Finally, what are you up to these days? What's the
Earl doing these days?

Speaker 3 (12:54):
Uh? Well, right now, I'm I'm collecting my NFL chicks.
I'm a great dad. Uh Yeah, So I'm just just
been around, uh, staying in shape, playing basketball all the time,
watching sports, grouting on. I love Boston's bost Celtics. They
gonna win up championship this year. And yeah, so I
just been watching, just watching sports. Man, just stay connected

(13:16):
to the game. I have kids, so I'll be going
to the sporting events. So yeah, I'll just keep myself busy.

Speaker 1 (13:22):
I'm sitting here the Vmax. Should John give you a
sholl you ready to go? Can you still play?

Speaker 3 (13:25):
Yeah? You know I still can't play. Uh. You know,
teams just gotta they just gotta like me. Uh. I
know my leg injury, Uh that was on some red flags.
But you know, once I'm out there, I know what
I'm doing. I'm being in Baltimore when I lost two games,
but that was just a red flag to some some teams,
And you know, most of the time, or I'm knowing
my situation, nobody really explained to me exactly what was

(13:48):
going on. So I just I just kind of put
two and two together. So I wanted to be this
guy wondering what if what could I just it's just
my leg, So teams just not want to take a
chance with my leg. Injury, so I'm I'm cool with that.
I'm cool with just sleeping in. I get a lot
of risks. I look young, I'm handsome, so I'm I'm

(14:10):
happy about that.

Speaker 1 (14:11):
I know you are, by the way, Earl Thomas at
the Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort and Convention Center tonight for
a Super Bowl party. Seahawks, Julian Love, Kenny McIntosh tight end.
Actually he's now fullback. They just say now he's a fullback.
Braddy Russell are all gonna be there, some former Seahawks
like Sam Adams, Ravald Morris, a lonso mits is more
as Squamish Clearwater Casino Resort Convention Center. I believe it
might be sold out, but they can go online and

(14:32):
check that out at Clearwatercasino dot com. Finally, Earl, what
do you want to say to Seahawk fans as I
let you go?

Speaker 3 (14:37):
Oh? Thanks, thank you guys for supporting me. It's definitely
gonna be sold out, and uh, you know, I've been
hearing from the team that put this whole thing together
that everybody really wanted to see me, So I'm excited
about that.

Speaker 1 (14:48):
Earl. I can't believe we got you on with dan Quinn.
Thank you so much. Great to hear your voice, Thank you.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
Thank you guys. Today I need to hear coach dan Quinn.
It was cool. That was big, especially as draft night.
What pick does the com and the commanders at tonight.

Speaker 1 (15:01):
Well, it's after eighteen because they had a good year. Man,
I can tell you that. I'd have to look that up.
Hang out a second. I'll tell you right now. The
commanders are picking. They're at twenty nine. They're at number
twenty nine. Pick number twenty nine.

Speaker 3 (15:11):
That's good, that's good. That's my grugs the number.

Speaker 1 (15:13):
I forgot it there exactly. That thing should be hanging
up in the Ring of Honors. What it should be earl.
Thanks again, buddy, I appreciate it all right, Thank you guys,
