Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now from the Star Renels Sports to us your ninety
three point three j j RFM sports headlines.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
These headlines are brought to you by Frostproof Coors Lights,
and don't worry your sports loving heads about it. Ian
will be with you in just a few minutes. I'm
going to get these headlines started, and I'm starting with
a disappointment crack in last night Anders six to two
loss to the Blue Jacket on the road that was
not inspiring Groupauer giving up five goals to Columbus on
(00:30):
nineteen attempts. Ellie toldin in both cracking goals, nobody else
contributing in that category. What was your biggest takeaway Anders
when it came to that?
Speaker 3 (00:40):
What what did you see the start?
Speaker 4 (00:42):
The start was a little poor and then this lot
of sloppiness in the back end. But yeah, it's a
disappointing effort from a team that expected more from the season.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Yeah, especially against that opponent, one that hasn't been a
buckeboo for them. Yep, we talked about yesterday and you
know another one, Buffalo Sabers. They're heading to Buffalo tomorrow
to take them on. They're not having the greatest season either,
one o'clock. Is that fuck drop twelve three pre game
right here on your home for Kracking Hockey ninety three
point three kJ r FM.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
Don't right game, don't be there, get right game?
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Yep, yeah, let's uh yeah, and yeah, let's have it
be ours. Yeah, let's please have it being good.
Speaker 5 (01:21):
Call good.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
When you said don't have it be theirs, I thought
you were getting at Uh. I thought you were talking
about the cracking them. Wait what oh yeah, no, no, no, no,
they're not getting right. We are hopefully all right again.
That's one o'clock and uh that is tomorrow. Your Saturday
Orange Bowl didn't disappoint last night as Notre Dame and
Penn State took things down to the wire. Drew Aller
(01:45):
had a key late game interception, setting up the Irish
for a game winning field goal off the foot of
Mitch Jeter. Final score twenty four, twenty seven to twenty
four was the final and they head to the National Championship.
Speaking of the Natty, heavily favored Ohio State takes on
the Texas Longhorns this afternoon in the semi final. Kickoff
for that one is four thirty. Husky men's basketball got
(02:07):
wallop last night by number sixteen Michigan State eighty eight
to fifty four. They'll take on Michigan right number twenty
four in the country on Sunday at eleven am. You
can hear that right over on nine to fifty kr
am WI. Washington Women, they take on Michigan State on Sunday,
that is at eleven am. And we've got that one
right over on ten ninety am as well. And a
(02:29):
really really disappointing game for the Cougar men's basketball team
last night as they fell to the Pacific Tigers ninety
five to ninety four and overtime down by two. With
two point six seconds left in ot, junior Lamar Washington
caught an inbounds pass from the corner drilled a three
pointer at the buzzer. We did not want to be
(02:51):
on the opposite side of that one. So that was
the final for the Coops and that was a game
they absolutely should have won. Now that Ian is back,
let's get into the show.
Speaker 5 (03:00):
It's part of.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
Our relentless coverage of the NFL. I'm your home for
the twelfth Man, proudly presents of Washington State Beat Commissions Football. Friday,
probably brought to you by the Washington Beat, Farmers and
Wrenchers Beat. It's What's for Dinner. Football Friday is on
with the in for Nets on Sports Radio ninety three
(03:24):
point three kJ.
Speaker 5 (03:25):
R f M. All right, it is a football Friday
and we are back home. Thanks Jess for handling that.
Speaker 6 (03:31):
I was.
Speaker 5 (03:32):
It's lunar New Year's you know that.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Yeah, there's a lot going on here.
Speaker 5 (03:35):
So I was. I was. I might have been distracted
with Lunar New Year. I might have been distracted in
the sports book because there's some stuff going on called
the wild Card Weekend going on here. That's the Qualmie Casino. Andrews,
we miss you.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
Uh yeah, I wish I could go there. Thanks for
rutting it in my face again.
Speaker 5 (03:54):
Someday we'll get you up here, buddy. Someday we'll get
you up here.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
But it's fun with motes and I get to sit here.
Speaker 5 (04:01):
You gotta pay the price, but pay the dues, and
here you are so uh you know, you would think
the highly esteemed, highly thought of backup to Mike Benton
pre and post intermission host named Anderson Hurst would get
out of the studio every now and then we get
you out of the studio. You do get you know,
you do some stuff at Climate Pledge.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Yeah, that's true, that is true.
Speaker 5 (04:19):
But hey, happy to be a snow Qualma Casino. Uh,
we're gonna be up here a bunch. I think the
next two fridays after this for Divisional round Conference championship weekend,
we'll take a week off and then we back up
here for the Friday before Super Bowl because we're at
the sports book. So qual me Casino And I gotta
say this right because so call me casino and hotel.
(04:40):
The hotel's going to open up in a few months.
When it does, and well, I'm gonna tweet out a
picture later. I mean, it looks like it's ready, but
it's just done from the outside. They're doing everything inside
right now. This place is gonna be completely transformed and yeah,
and it's they're going to open a brand new sports bar,
state of the art, really cool. They'll still have the
sports book here, but you can wager, especially on the
(05:01):
app throughout the property. And when the sports bar is there,
it's gonna be phenomenal. And we're gonna have a little
spot in there to do shows at which I can't
wait for. But the hotel's gorgeous looking, at least from
the outside. So lots of changes up here still Columba
Casino and hotel, and we're happy to be here on
a Friday before wild Card weekend, busy show coming up today,
(05:22):
We've got a lot going on, and first and foremost,
it's our last regular visit of the year. At one
o'clock today with one Great Coast Cell. We're gonna talk
to him, obviously about and we mentioned this last week
when we had him on before the Rams game. We
want to have him break down kind of the season
and what he sees both offensively, offensively and defensively from
the Seattle Seahawks, what he saw this year where there
(05:42):
are some improvements, and obviously the Ryan Grubb firing. Now, Anders, Jess,
I don't know what you're thinking we're gonna get from
Great Coast Sell, but I'm gonna tell you right now,
there's only one thing he can tell us. Anders.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
I'm pretty sure I will have to wait for one
o'clock to make sure this is true, but I'm pretty
sure all he can say is what's on the tape.
Speaker 7 (06:01):
End.
Speaker 5 (06:02):
I think that's all he can tell us. What he
sees on the tape. But what did he see on
the tape from that Seahawks offense? That might have been
a red flag for the firing of Ryan Grubb. We
joke about Cossell. He's a beauty. I mean, he is
an absolute beauty. And I think when we joke about
you can only he can only tell us what he
sees on the tape. We do that for one reason.
(06:24):
He is easily easily the most objective guest that we
could ever have. Yes, he has absolutely zero, zero agenda
loyalty to anybody. So I'm curious to what he's because
I think with the Ryan Grubb, I love Hugh Millen
to death. He was a diehard Husky. I think there's it.
(06:46):
I learned a thing early on in college, and I
think it was it might have been a combo polyscize
slash media class. And I remember this professor told me,
and I've always believed this to be true, that objectivity
is impossible. It's impossible because a human being has elements
and traits that don't allow he or she to be objective.
(07:08):
Because you have a personality, you have biases built in,
doesn't matter. You can try to be objective. Oh yeah,
And it's it's the goal in journalism is to be objective, right,
is to be an objective person. Though, And if you're
a fan, and but you just you have built in
just like how you write a story even and there's
(07:29):
a big challenge we used to have in college, right,
like how do you write that story? Well, I'm coming
from a point of view that I have built in thoughts, opinions, biases,
whatever it might be. It's impossible for a human being
to be objective. Objectivity is impossible. You strive for it.
You strive for it. I always laugh when newspaper writers
get on their high horse objective. No, you're not. You
(07:53):
have built You may like the manager, you may not
like the manager. You may like the coach, may not
like the coach. That's how you skew your stories. Zelle
is the closest thing to being objective. This there is
because frankly, he doesn't give a blank. He just goes
and watches the tape. He is a nerd. He is
the ultimate football nerd. And that's why we love him.
So I want to hear what he says about Ryan Grunt.
Speaker 4 (08:13):
Yeah, and like he has no ties to Seattle, so
he has no reason to want in one way or
the other. And no, he watches the rest of the league,
so he knows how to compare what we see in
Seattle to what we see elsewhere in the league.
Speaker 5 (08:24):
So and he and he's not Remember he's not paid
by a team or a network, pay by the NFL. Right,
So it's it's thirty two. So I'm just curious. I
use that for context to set up because I'm curious
to what he has to say about the grub firing.
I don't think that many people in our town can
be objective, especially if you're a Husky fan, because you'll
love the guy, and rightfully, so look what he did
(08:45):
for you, right, well, what he did for you. Yeah,
Holmgren didn't like it because his lack of objectivity comes
from being a head coach who had a strong belief
that you, as the head coach, don't fire assistant coaches,
especially after one year. It's your job to make them better.
That's just as a opinion. That also doesn't make you objective.
So that's why I bring that up. Coselle will be interesting.
I'm really really curious. I've been looking forward to this
(09:06):
all week to hear what Greg says about Ryan Grubb
and the offense. I'll tell you this. There was we
told you this the other day. There was a thought
he was going to get fired at the bye week.
Curtis mentioned this. I was talking to Curtis on Monday
at the Kraken game and ern was last Saturday actually
because it was before he got fired, and I think
(09:28):
you were there. We were talking about Curts and I
were talking he Curtis says, Hey, I was told that
this that this the off that the the running game
was a college level run game and scheme. That's what
Curtis was told by Sowing the Seahawks front office that
that I can tell you who the person is is
a football person, you know, And so like I want
(09:48):
to hear what Costel says. So, I mean, that's coming up.
We're kind of put a rap on the Ryan Grup
thing coming up. And look in the off season we'll
talk about Geno. Is Gino the guy? I mean McDonald
says he is. What does Greg think? So we'll talk
about that coming up today at one o'clock. Daniel ne
in just a few minutes his week, we visit and
can continue Danny right throughout.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
This He's an annual man. He is every single Friday.
Love the season.
Speaker 5 (10:07):
I love that because I love talking to Danny. He's
gonna join us, coming up, get his perspective on all
things Seahawks and everything else going on. We'll do that
in sports coming up with Danny in a few minutes,
and then Rob rang will preview college football playoff semi
final weekend. We'll look back last night, we'll look ahead
tonight's game. We're at the sports book, so there should
be some juice on this.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
I see now, that's why I'm jealous you and don't
want to be able to go and do that.
Speaker 5 (10:29):
Come on, you can drive up here anytime. My friend
he's here. Join the Crescent Club. Get yourself a cress
and club membership. It's free. And once you do that,
you know what you do. Look at what I'm doing,
Jess logging in as we speak, log in with face
id both. It's so easy.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
Let's get to.
Speaker 5 (10:46):
May have an active bet going on right now, sure
like the Buckeyees minus six. Anyway, we got all that
going on today. Well that was last week, so I
might have swung by it last week.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
I don't know what I see it I'm.
Speaker 5 (10:57):
Not sure what the update is. We'll find out later
on Okay, dananiy O'Neil standing by, he's coming up there.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
It's time now for Danny O'Neill of the Dang Apostrophe.

(11:26):
five two five five zero five hundreds. Now here's he
in with Danny O'Neill. Yes, it is.
Speaker 5 (11:33):
Danie O'Neil joined us on Fridays, and I was thrilled
to find out this. We're gonna keep this going for
a while. I love the fact that it's not just
a football thing. We got Danny throughout the year. Fridays. Well,
we'll see if Friday still work for everybody. But I
love having Danny on his perspective about all things sports locally.
Of course, you know, it's the best damn sports writing
you get on Seattle Sports. It's coming out of New
(11:55):
York City. Every single week couple times a week with
the damn apostrophe. What's up, my friend? How are you?
Speaker 7 (12:00):
I'm doing well.
Speaker 6 (12:01):
Happy New Year, Ean.
Speaker 8 (12:02):
Happy New Year?
Speaker 6 (12:03):
Do you guys?
Speaker 5 (12:04):
Happy New Year? T You's been a couple of weeks
because we've had days off in bowl games. And you
remember from your days in sports radio, you look at
that schedule, Hey, can we carry that bowl game?
Speaker 6 (12:12):
Sure?
Speaker 5 (12:12):
The Male Bowl sounds like the Male Bowl sounds like
a good deal to cover, and you know what it is.
And by the way, did you see this? I was
talking to Stuart Mandel yesterday from the Athletic Are Weekly
visit with him and I'd seen this as well. The
numbers this year for the non college football playoff bowl
games through the roof. They averaged danny the average two
(12:33):
point seven million. There were bowl games topping out at
four plus million. The lowest rated ones were still in
the nine hundred thousand to a million range. I mean,
it's it's nuts. People were like, oh, you know how
the national pundits work. I always like the people that
cover things nationally and they actually hate the sport, you know, like,
(12:54):
like what are you doing? Like the these are brutal,
These are brutal, and yet people watch those things. Man,
they watched the Holiday Alamo Mayo Sun Bulls.
Speaker 7 (13:02):
They watch those, they do. And there's a reason why
I saw this.
Speaker 9 (13:07):
I was amazed when I saw this fact.
Speaker 6 (13:09):
ESPN owns seventeen of the bulls.
Speaker 9 (13:11):
Yes, ESPN owns seventeen of the bulls. And why do
you think that is? It's because it's great programming for them. Yes,
and there are some pluses and some minuses to having
college football shift to a point where the TV networks
are their primary customer.
Speaker 6 (13:28):
They're the person that they care most about.
Speaker 9 (13:30):
But let's not get it all twisted and think that,
oh my god, it's terrible what.
Speaker 6 (13:36):
Is happening with it.
Speaker 9 (13:37):
It's different and there still is a lot of people.
There's a ton of people that are watching it still.
For all of the problems and difficulties that we complain
about in the.
Speaker 5 (13:45):
Sport, yes, yeah, and I'm with you. I mean I
complain as much as anybody you know. At least once
a day, five days a week, during my three hours,
I'll complain about something with it. I mean, the fact
that we're going to there, people are dipsticks are talking.
I swear, I so close to swearing these days, the
fact that the fact there's so many dipsticks Daddy out
(14:08):
there that are talking about well, we just will just
lease the space and these guys won't be student athletes anymore.
And I'm like, none of you understand the mindset of
an eighteen to twenty two year old. None of you
understand that if they can just get paid like these Like, yeah,
you want to pay me, you know, as a non quarterback,
as a backup whatever, you want to pay me seventy
(14:31):
five grand a year to play football in college and
not go to class. Great, Well, four years later, what
are you gonna do? Right, Like, what are you doing
four years later? And I brought this up earlier with
my with my son. I said, you know, and he
played small college football, but like I know how hard
he works, and it doesn't matter for playing D one,
FCSD two, D three and AI. It doesn't matter what sport.
(14:52):
You put in the same amount of time, Danny, you
put in the same amount of time in terms of
training all that you just have less resources. Maybe, But
if that that's all they did and then they had
the rest of the time off, I can't fathom how
much video game time would be being played in February, March,
and April, like without going to school. Like how dumb
of an idea is that? Am I the only one
(15:12):
that thinks that.
Speaker 6 (15:14):
No, there's certainly a point to be made.
Speaker 9 (15:16):
And one of the risks in terms of talking about
massive reform like that and detaching college football entirely from college,
from a college from the academics, is that that works
for such a small percentage of the players. The vast
majority of players would it would change it, and it
(15:39):
would mean that you have to choose between going to
school and going to college.
Speaker 6 (15:44):
And maybe you have some sort of a bridged version
where some of the guys can choose to go to school.
Speaker 9 (15:48):
But look, in general, I think policies are made to
benefit the most people, as opposed to we're going to
make policies around the slim minority of really talented college
football skill players and pass rushers who we know at.
Speaker 6 (16:09):
The age of eighteen are going to be millionaires.
Speaker 5 (16:13):
Danie O'Neil joining us, he does every week. Appreciate him
coming on. Dani. Apostrophe will tell you about that in
a second. Before we get to the Seahawks. Ryan Grubb
and I'm gonna get back to college table with Washington
in a second, because I think it goes back to
the bowl games, and you know, do people care well,
I think every Husky fan cared about what the quarterback
of the future did in that Sun Bowl. I would
if I was a Husky fan before we get to that. Yeah,
(16:36):
so I get this. I'm looking through some stuff today.
A big fan of the athletic I'm running through some
athletic stuff and they I think it was Rosenthal did
the grading of the offseason so far for baseball? You
wrote this in your column this week. You didn't write anything,
by the way, it was a big blank spot that
I had to scroll through. I'll get to that in
a second. Why so they get down to the Seattle
(16:57):
Mariners grade free agents, none trades, acquired Austin Shenton from
the Grays for cash. Huh key takeaways. You'll love this, Danny.
This is why you left a bull big blank space
space in that email I got. The Mariners have basically
done nothing this offseason, not a single noteworthy trade and
zero free agent sightings. They arguably have the top five
(17:20):
rotation in baseball, but they don't have enough offense to
win a division title, let alone a pennant. Their offense
doesn't make enough contact and strikes out too much. They
have a solid outfield, a Gold Glove caliber shortstop I
don't know sh about that, and a decent catcher to
at least build around, but they need to get going,
so I think I would say Col's better than a
decent catcher, but everything else they kind of nailed f
(17:41):
none one trade. What'd you think of their offseason so far?
Speaker 9 (17:46):
It's puzzling in the sense that, man, they're really gonna
go and just say, hey, we made our additions last
year and Randy or Rose Rain is going to make
the difference in this offense. You're like, well, first base
and third base are pretty important positions and that's usually
where a lot of the power comes from on your club,
(18:07):
and that's generally why those are pretty expensive positions. But
you're just going to go, like, really, this is what
we're going to go. You're not going to add a
second basement. So I'm puzzled. But then you come back to, well,
the Mariners are kind of told us they're shooting for
the middle, that they they've kind of told us that
their long term approach, and I know the fifty four
(18:31):
per thing gets focused on and I understand what Jerry
was trying to.
Speaker 6 (18:35):
Say there, but if you shoot for the middle, if you're.
Speaker 9 (18:39):
Shooting to hey, if everything goes right, we should contend
and if a few things break our way, will be
in the playoffs. You can't complain when you end up
exactly where they've been pretty much for four years now,
which is close to making the playoffs. Might do it,
might not, and they haven't done anything to change that.
And this is the point in time right now, this
(19:00):
is the point in time where they should be. This
is the point in time where they really should be
making that push, and they're not. It's no mystery why
they're not. It's it's their payroll. And that's frustrated.
Speaker 5 (19:11):
Yeah, I think I think the thing that's bothersome is, well,
first of all, take a step back, and I'm sure
you agree that you can only do so much in
terms of like if player, if teams don't want to
trade with you. You know, you always have to have
a partner. If you want to acquire a free agent,
you have to you know, that free agent has to
(19:32):
want to come to your town, whatever the sport might be.
But the way you entice free agents oftentimes still is money.
So if you were being aggressive and saying, hey, we
offered X, Y or z to this player and they
said no, there's no blame you can put on an
organization if they just don't want to come to your city,
your town, your organization, or your ballpark, right like like
there's and if you can't make a trade because someone
(19:53):
doesn't want to do it, that's it takes two to tangle.
But when you come up with an arbitrary number of
what you you can spend an off season of fifteen
million dollars in twenty twenty five Major League Baseball, that
you can quote a ford in a non salary cap
league in a top twelve media market, that to me
is is that's why Mariner fans have a right to
(20:14):
be frustrated for sure.
Speaker 10 (20:16):
And the talk about the talk about trading one of
their pitchers, a pitcher under contract who they made a
big deal to acquire in twenty twenty two, who, by
the way that edition worked and pushed him into the playoffs.
Speaker 6 (20:29):
Discussion about trading him isn't about he's not worth the money.
Speaker 9 (20:33):
It's that we've got this money committed to him, and
we've got a lot of pitching, so maybe we can
shovel like shuttle this money over to our offense. You're like, well,
yeah you can, but you could also just decide to
pay more for some offense, Like that's an option that's.
Speaker 6 (20:49):
On the table. I've decided. The Mariners are.
Speaker 9 (20:51):
The most frustrating kind of cheap. There is the old
school cheap, which is George R. Giros, who owned the
team I think one eighty seven or eight one to
eighty nine, and he was He's the terrible old school
cheap oder on I'm just not gonna spend, and he's
the guy in Major League. They would have ripped all
his clothes off as they won games, like he's the
big movie man that everybody cakes. And there's something slightly honorable,
(21:16):
like they're loathsome toads of humans, but there's something something
slightly honorable about, Hey, I'm just a cheap bastard and
I'm not gonna spend the Mariners. And this is the
way Howard Schultz was when he owned the Sonics too.
Speaker 6 (21:29):
They're the kind of.
Speaker 9 (21:30):
Cheap where they want to explain to you why they
have to be cheaper. They're like, no, you have to
really understand, like they think it's our problem that we
don't understand the financial rap now they're using.
Speaker 5 (21:42):
And I'm like, no, I get it.
Speaker 6 (21:44):
You're just being cheap about it.
Speaker 5 (21:46):
And not only that, it's the most frustrating kind.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
Of cheap because if you just if you just spent
some like you don't.
Speaker 9 (21:52):
Even have to have a wholesale change, just just spend
the uncomfortable dollar, make the purchase on credit. Come on,
just extend it, because right now we've got a shot.
Speaker 6 (22:00):
They're like, nope, we have to be It's the worst.
It's the worst kind of cheek.
Speaker 5 (22:06):
Danie O'Neil joining us. God, George Ardoris, I started to
shudder when you said that name. You know, then we
got awful about this.
Speaker 9 (22:14):
That dude, that dude in later life spent eighty million.
Speaker 5 (22:18):
Dollars on a yacht.
Speaker 9 (22:20):
Like after all of that crap he did, he had
spent eighty million dollars on a boat.
Speaker 5 (22:26):
Well, and he also for.
Speaker 9 (22:27):
Thirteen million dollars shelled it for I think it was
seventy five million auto luxury boat.
Speaker 5 (22:36):
And and he tried to move the team. He's also
the guy that that that did he played the game
with Tampa Bay and at one point even remember he
played Chicago Tampa Bay against each other and all that.
It was just it was greasy, so greasy awful along
the way. So do you miss your days of being
a beat writer and chasing down every assistant coach in
(22:56):
the NFL who could possibly be a coordinator for the Seahawks.
Speaker 9 (23:00):
No, no, this is this was This was officially the
time of year that was my least favorite. There are
there are certain things, and I like actually covering once
they hire the guys.
Speaker 5 (23:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (23:12):
I really enjoyed that part of trying to figure out, Okay,
what's this thing gonna look like? The interview part, it's
so hard to understand who's actually a candidate who is
being interviewed because their agent is making a push to
get their name out there because they want them involved
in discussions of the hiring cycle. And and then my
(23:33):
favorite part is the attempts. I learned quite a bit
about Hank Frayley yesterday.
Speaker 5 (23:38):
Yes, tell me about Hank Frayley. Tell me about Hank Frailey,
the offensive line coach at Detroit.
Speaker 9 (23:43):
Hank Frayley ended up going to Robert Morris at a
college he was someone that was a very lightly recruited
he ended up being undrafted.
Speaker 6 (23:50):
Had a great NFL Brewer.
Speaker 9 (23:52):
He's one of two players I believe to have had
his number retired. Like really self made guy in terms
of NFL. And he is exactly what you'd expect from
an offensive line.
Speaker 6 (24:02):
Coach that wants to run the football. He really really
looks like he wants to run the football.
Speaker 9 (24:07):
And that I was like, that sounds great, Like I'd
love to see that Freight runs the ball really well.
Speaker 7 (24:12):
But he's not going to bring to Troit's offensive line
with him.
Speaker 9 (24:15):
No, it sounds good, but I don't know enough to
tell you whether or not like that's the right guy,
because I don't know how much he's not going to
bring the personnel with me.
Speaker 5 (24:25):
I left, I wait, I'd probably buried the lead when
I asked you about Hank Frayley or even Thomas Brown,
who I kind of like Thomas Brown a little bit.
I liked to but let me let's just get to
the Ryan Grubb part. And I brought this up last segment.
I think it's impossible for many who are Husky fans
to be truly objective about the Ryan Grubb firing. Because
your affinity for Ryan Grubb is is rightfully placed. He
(24:48):
took a team to a whole different level offensively, best
offensive college football two years and running, There's no doubt
about that. Gets a Seahawk joby like, ah, there we go.
And for whatever reason, Mike McDonald made a change. What
do you think about the change? You've bet hell, you
covered the team when the Jeremy Bates one year experiment
ended with Pete Carroll, And it was, by the way, Danny,
(25:09):
I think it might have been your story or somebody's
in the Times. I went and googled it, Jeremy Bates
fired by Pete Carroll. It was the exact same line.
Philosophical differences, the exact same line.
Speaker 9 (25:20):
Yeah, I do think the one difference here is I
do think with Pete and Jeremy Bates, it wasn't football philosophy.
Speaker 6 (25:28):
It was it was how baits related to people. It
was how he coached.
Speaker 5 (25:32):
He was he was. He was just a jackass. Let's
be honest. You covered him, I covered him. You you
had more runnings with him than I did. He was
a jackass, he was.
Speaker 9 (25:44):
It probably didn't help that he might have been over
served at the team's holiday party and began to.
Speaker 6 (25:49):
Disrobe at a point when I believe the owner was
still there.
Speaker 9 (25:53):
I don't I don't think that helped his chances at
being retained, but he I think that was about how
he related and that he was not taking the approach
that that Pete wanted of encouragement and positivity and sort
of that energy. I don't know about the personal dynamics
(26:13):
with Grub and McDonald that there was sort of a
friction in that regard. I have heard that he uped
a couple people the wrong way in the building. That's
he's pretty confident in the plays that that he called,
and it sure seems like there is a difference. That
Mike McDonald looked at him and said, this isn't going
to be the coach that runs the ball the way
(26:34):
I want it run, and that may be a very
fair and accurate assessment. The one thing I will say
is that I don't think you can look at their
lack of rushing success this season and say that that's
a reflection of how Grub wanted to run the ball, don't.
I don't think they could run it. They couldn't run
(26:55):
it last year. They didn't run it well this year.
And it's very, very possible that Mike McDonald was right that,
left to his own devices, given a great rushing offense,
that they that Grub will still run too much.
Speaker 5 (27:08):
I don't.
Speaker 9 (27:09):
I don't think that this season is proof of that.
I just think that they couldn't run the ball because
that offensive line was so bad. And Yeah, as far
as I don't feel strongly about the decision to fire
Grub in the sense that I didn't see things from
him that made me convinced, oh, this guy is really
(27:31):
going to.
Speaker 6 (27:31):
Be great as an NFL coordinator.
Speaker 9 (27:33):
But at the same time, I also didn't see anything.
It wasn't like it was a completely inept offense or
they took a major step back. It was I think
you attribute a lot of the inconsistency to the same
problem last year, which was the offensive.
Speaker 5 (27:46):
Offense line, offensive line all the way through. Yeah, we're
gonna talk about that with great co Selt one o'clock today.
I outside of the football side of things, I guess
I would just my only thing with the Grub to
you know, we've spent as you can imagine and see
all that none with this topic all week. But if
the head coach for whatever reason, didn't feel like he
(28:07):
was the guy. Maybe it's personality driven. You got to
work with the guy thirteen hours a day, what have
you like. Mike Hombrian came in and said, doesn't matter.
That's your job as a head coach to make it work.
I get all that. It's a different world we live
in now, Mike, And if he didn't want to work
with him, that's his prerogative. He's a head coach. It's
his ass on a lone. Yeah, you know, And so
I Mike McDonald did enough on the defensive side that
I believe that his decision making so far has been good.
(28:29):
So we move on and we'll see what they come
up with. Final thing for Danie O'Neil, the stumble had
to be enjoyable, right watching Demon Williams.
Speaker 6 (28:37):
Yeah, he looked really good.
Speaker 9 (28:39):
There's certainly they got kind of beat up in with
Louisville running the ball their defense, but you kind of
kind of wondered, there's a lot of there's a lot
that's any flux there. I know Steve Belichick stayed through
the game, but man, Demond Williams looked really good. And
I think the thing, first of all, he's extremely fast.
His ability to run is great, but it also looks
(29:01):
like he doesn't while he runs and improvises. He's not
a turnover machine. He's been no pretty good with the
ball so far, and that's I think when you're talking
about a player of that style, that's the number one
thing to worry about is Okay, he'll make some things happen,
but does he take care of the ball.
Speaker 6 (29:18):
And it really looked like it was fun to watch.
Speaker 5 (29:20):
Him early pick six and after that he is good
and he can chuck it. He's not a one trick
pony like it's not just hey, he can run the
football like he's I'd be if you're a Husky fan,
you should be damn excited about that move. And ahead,
tell Peo about the Daniy apostrophe.
Speaker 9 (29:31):
Danny, you can log on at Danny O'Neil dot com
and you'll get uh, well, you get a couple couple
of newsletters each week.
Speaker 6 (29:39):
It is free of charge. You just send me your
your email address. I'll send you back something that says hello.
Speaker 9 (29:44):
And then you're signed up to receive the best sports
riding on Seattle on Seattle Sports from New York City.
Speaker 5 (29:49):
And it really is. I mean there's I don't think
there's even anybody close to number two in that regard.
So I've got the market.
Speaker 6 (29:56):
I've got the market.
Speaker 5 (29:56):
Hemmed up on that. You've got it cornered, my friend.
Great stuff. We'll talk to next week.
Speaker 7 (30:01):
Sounds good.
Speaker 5 (30:01):
Take care of you, Danny O'Neil, will take a break,
come back, great costal coming up top of the our
nine three point three KJFM.
Speaker 1 (30:10):
Now back to the Washington State Beef Commissions Football Friday
with the inf NEETs on your home for the NFL
Sports Radio ninety three point three KJRFM.
Speaker 5 (30:22):
It big thanks to Jackie and the crew at the
Washington State Beef Commission Football Fridays. We've had them all year,
last official one of the year, and then we've got
lots of football coming up with playoffs, College football playoffs,
so much more. But of course we're your home for
the NFL playoffs. Curacy of Westwood one nine three point
three KJRFM games this weekend games, next weekend games a
weekend after that. They if we have a cracking or
(30:43):
other conflict, we put them on nine to fifty on
the AM. We've got all them for you. We super
Bowl Sunday, of course right here in KJR two we
can say super Bowl because why we are feustation damn
right yeah, but big thanks to them throughout the year
as well. Okay, let's up. I want to touch it
on just a quick Mariner thing for a second, because
(31:04):
I freely admit I might have done this just for
effect today and just entertainment. You do well, you're on
the text chain. Oh yes, there's only so many threads
you can be on, Jess.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
I know, I'm okay, yeah, I would be too nice
for that one.
Speaker 4 (31:21):
I was gonna say, there's words spoken that would offend
you or not of you, just like I don't know.
Speaker 2 (31:26):
They're not in my realm.
Speaker 5 (31:27):
Yes, yeah, yeah, boys get a little fired up every
now and then. Yeah, they did, like it'll fire up.
So the Athletic Today did the story on grading the
off season for baseball team so far, and our team
got the f I just read that to Danny a
minute ago, yes, I think, and Danny's dang apostrophe calm
(31:48):
was hilarious because he sent it out and he talked
about the Mariners offseason and then it was just like
you had to scroll like down, like what would be
a page or so of just blank nothingness. And I
know you guys have the podcast out you and Chuck right.
Speaker 3 (32:02):
Yes, we do the Stove the Stove podcast.
Speaker 5 (32:09):
I wish this baseball team would give us something to
discuss that wasn't always negative. I really truly do, because
it feels like all we do is talk about negativity
with the baseball team. That's them. That's them problem. That's
a they problem. That's not a Mariner fan problem, that's
(32:30):
not a media problem. That's a them problem. And I
feel bad for the guys that work down there and
the ladies that work down there. They do a great
job with marketing and promotions and selling and corporate advertising
and all the all the non baseball people.
Speaker 2 (32:43):
Then they're the ones that have to Some of them
deal with it.
Speaker 5 (32:48):
Some of them, we love you, Alex.
Speaker 3 (32:51):
Some of them they put lipstick on a pig.
Speaker 5 (32:52):
Let's put it out they do.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
That's a hard job. That's a very difficult trick.
Speaker 5 (32:57):
Because on the baseball side. And Jerry he's an easy target,
just an easy target, justin not as easy because he's
a really nice guy. He doesn't come across as greasy
and kind of sleazy. Yeah, Jerry. I think Justin's pretty
like he feels like a good dude, and I know
a couple of things he's done behind the scenes that
are like he's a good guy, Like there's a there's
a really good part of Justin Hollander. Dan Wilson's beloved
(33:20):
as a manager, makes it harder to criticize him this year.
But ownership man like, it's it's one article. But I'm
sure every article that's out there, Andrews you peruse it
a lot more than I do. Yeah, Grade F free
agents none, that's all I need to look at. Yeah,
Grade F free agents none. Trades backup first Baseman that's
(33:42):
got like three F bats or whatever the hell it is.
What are we doing? Like when will it change? I
don't think the answer is that. I think the answer
is never under this ownership group. But as I mentioned
to Danny, it's this self imposed budget that they put
out there. They're not like some companies have budgets bottom
lines hell in the media more so than a lot
(34:04):
of places. But you guys, all people work around you know,
you hear things all we get to budget cutbacks here,
you're gonna do this there? You know, our company is
doing this because you're you're beholden to stockholders, shareholders, multiple
these guys being these guys, these guys being the Mariner
(34:25):
ownership group. Any any restrictions you put on payroll are
to benefit you personally in terms of your profits and
your bottom line. That's the issue that Mariner fans have,
and rightfully so. And I don't know Andrews what you guys.
I mean, I heard it, but I'll let you tease
as much as you want on the on the on
the stove. But I think even the most ardent of
(34:50):
supporters of the Mariners are starting to lose faith.
Speaker 4 (34:52):
Well and faith you kind of mentioned it yesterday, like
Chuck Powell, who's been an avid defender of just you
know the direction the Mariners are going. But if Jerry
Depoto and his rebuild, which you know, on some level
I do agree with, but it's to a point where
it's like, all right, what's next? If this is just
and Dan you mentioned the last segment like if you're
(35:12):
shooting for the middle, which it kind of seems like
they are, I don't even what do you expect at
this point? And as someone like that, you mentioned the
free agents was kind of the only thing you were
looking at. I agree with you, Like, if they start
looking to make trades and trying to make your team
better by trading a starting pitcher, that's that's going down
a steep road that you don't know what the end
(35:34):
could be because you're taking away possibly and then the
names that's being thrown out there as Luis Castillo. He's
been one of your best pitchers the last three years
and he's made almost every single start, And I get like, okay,
he's he has a bigger contract, so then that frees
up some money so you can spend somewhere else. But
why do we even have to do that, Like, why
do we have to possibly get rid of one of
(35:55):
the best parts of our team to maybe not upgrade
the team, because we tried this last year with Robbie
Ray and look what happened. You got Mitch Handiger out
of it. Like did that help your team at all?
I don't think so. They're hamstrung at this point with
both the financial restrictions that's put on my ownership and
the lack of foresight in the front office to be
(36:17):
able to make do with what they have, because there's
other teams that have those financial restrictions that still do
more than the Mariners do.
Speaker 5 (36:24):
Louis Castile signed a five year, one hundred and eight
million dollar contract with the Mariners. His base salary twenty
two million this year, twenty four million total. When it's
all said and done, if they do make a trade,
I would just and they and they move. Castile be
(36:44):
also thinking to myself, well, you're doing that because you
can save money. Yeah, right, Like like they've given themselves
no level of of you know, they don't benefit for
the dow at all. And I just I'm pleading with
the ownership. They're not listening. They don't care. But guys,
(37:07):
stop it. Just stop wasting this generational young and if
you want to include Castillo, just overall pitching staff. Stop
wasting this this group. Like we've had great pictures come
through here before Randy. I mean, let's even go back
Mark Langston and they had to trade him. I know,
(37:28):
different ownership group, but it's the same premise they traded.
They traded Mark Langston because they didn't want to sign
him when he went to free agency in the summer,
so they traded him to Montreal expos. Now we got
Randy out of it and Brian Holman and Gen Harris.
We got a good trade out of it, great, but
they traded Mark Langston, the best left hander in the
game at the time, because of money. They got rid
(37:48):
of Randy because of money we had. Felix wasted his career,
just wasted his career. But now we got five of
those guys that I'd all just mentioned. I don't know
if as a Hall of Famer in there like we
had with Randy, but we got five of those guys,
and you're wasting it, absolutely wasting it. Why because you're
worried about your bottom line and your profits for a
(38:11):
team that makes a profit just by opening up the doors.
Because every year sports franchises go up in value. Stop it.
Everybody sees it. The Jeff Passings of the world, the
Ken Rosenthal's of the world, the Jason Starks in the world.
It's not just us in this market, it's everybody. Stop it.
(38:33):
You've got a golden opportunity to hockey teams struggling football
team's kind of in the middle of the road place
right now. I know Husky fans think that they're gonna
win a national title next year, they're not so like,
You've got a golden opportunity to seize the market in
the spring, in the summer, do it. Hell, the other
summer team just went out there and made a hammer
move to get better. Called the Sounders because that's what
(38:55):
they do. A couple moves, Yeah, a couple moves. Yeah. Anyway,
that's it. Go check out the work. iHeartRadio app. I'm
assuming for the Yeah.
Speaker 3 (39:03):
Anyway you get podcasts, but.
Speaker 5 (39:04):
But I would go to the app. Go to the new.
Speaker 2 (39:06):
APPO gets so easy. You can preset it. They can
preset your podcast.
Speaker 6 (39:13):
Good.
Speaker 3 (39:13):
It is very good, and you can find it.
Speaker 4 (39:16):
I'm both on my Mariners Weekly podcast page, which will
also include uh, you know, weekly updates throughout this season
because this is the off season podcast that I'm doing
with Chuck. But also there's a specific page for just
the Stove podcast if you so incline all right, great.
Speaker 5 (39:33):
Co sal What does the tape say about Ryan Grubbin
is firing? Next?
Speaker 1 (39:40):
No from the Starrunners Sports Touts. Your ninety three point
three k j R FM sports headlines.
Speaker 5 (39:47):
Headlines are brought to you by Frost Brood Corps. Light
Choose chill on this final Washington steep State Beef Commissioned
Football Friday. Beef. What's for dinner?
Speaker 8 (39:57):
Beef?
Speaker 5 (39:57):
I think they're bringing beef in today, are they? Andrew
Might I want to stick around by check it out.
I want to do that today. All right, let's see
what have we got going on? Cracking lost last night
six to two of the Blue Jackets. We move on.
Orange Bowl. Fantastic game Notre Dame Penn State, right down
to the wire, final score twenty seven to twenty four
at late field goal Mitch Jeter by the Irish. They
win it, they onto the finals. They'll take it on
(40:18):
the winner of tonight's game between Ohio State and Texas.
Four thirty is the kickoff there. Husky men's basketball was
down ninety nine to one at one point in the game.
They lost eighty eight to fifty four.
Speaker 6 (40:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (40:29):
I know the math doesn't work, but it was close
to that's a. That's a that's a rough one against
Michigan State, but at least their ranked number sixteen in
the country. Our team, the fighting scrap and Cougar's had
the worst loss they've had ever, and I mean ever ever,
ninety five ninety four to Pacific. They had lost a
thousand games in a row in the WCC. They're awful
basketball teams.
Speaker 3 (40:49):
Little they are.
Speaker 5 (40:50):
They are an awful basketball team. And I don't care
how many guys are hurt. Unacceptable loss And unfortunately, if
you had any thoughts of getting that large berth, you
make that one up. You cannot make that up. Ah
they take on God Zagging tomorrow SAgs. Watch them go
beat the Zags. And I'm still not gonna be happy.
I'm still gonna be better. I just you know how
it works, buddy, Yeah, Andrews, you know how it works.
(41:12):
Like you, that's a loss. You can't come back and overcome,
cannot overcome. Not good enough, just not good enough as well.
Seahawks fired Ryan Grubb this week. Well one guy to
talk about. What does the tape say about that? Moving
much more? Our final visit of the year thanks to
Seattle Cider Great Cosal.
Speaker 1 (41:32):
It's time for Egan's weekly visit with NFL Films Greg Coso,
brought to you by Seattle Cider Company on your home
for the twelfth Man and the NFL Sports Radio ninety
three point three kJ r FM.
Speaker 5 (41:46):
All right here we are, Yes, indeed, you hear the
You hear the sounds, and you hear the open. Our
great friends at Seattle Cider Man, big thanks to them
for another year of great co cell Mora and the
crew down at the top broom at Seattle Cider Thanks
to them, bottom of our heart. We love having Greg gone.
We're planning on draft coverage as well, starting in March.
(42:09):
Although I know my man Great Cosl is already looking
at draft stuff. I know how he operates. He's already
doing stuff. He's he never never takes a day off.
But he's with us again today. We want to We
talked about this last week. We wanted to wrap up
the season and who knows what kind of news would
happen over the last seven days. Great Coastell. But hey,
lo and behold, the Seahawks fired their offensive coordinator. How
are you.
Speaker 8 (42:28):
I'm doing great. I'm doing great. Yeah, I uh, let
me ask you this. You're there? Was that a surprise
to you?
Speaker 5 (42:35):
It was? I would say in this this may sound strange,
but I think we've all kind of had the same
thought this week. It's been It was a surprise, not
necessarily stunning, if that makes sense. Somewhere out between. Yeah, yeah,
Like I I think we thought that there would be
there would be a change to the offensive staff, and
(42:55):
they probably wouldn't go forward because the defense got better
the offense didn't. But yeah, they just weren't on the
same page. This is why we love having you on
and we'll talk bigger picture on things. But let's let's
go down the offense. What did you see?
Speaker 8 (43:08):
Yeah, I can only give you, obviously my opinion as
to you know, because I'm not in the building, I
don't know exactly other than I did make it a
point because I knew I was going to speak with you,
obviously to hear a little bit of Mike McDonald speak
about it. Obviously you know more about that. You're there,
so you hear him talk more. So I can only
give you my interpretation, you know, based on that, I
(43:30):
think that a couple of things from the tape stand out,
and I would assume that this played into it. Number one,
and this is true of most defensive coaches. And I
don't mean to sturdy your type, Mike McDonald, but I
think it's it's over time. It's fair to make this statement.
This was a team offensively that their O line wasn't
(43:53):
physical enough in the run game. Their run game with
a real quality back in Kenneth Walker never really became
a factor in games, with very very few exceptions, maybe
two games all season. I can't think, I know one game.
They did rush for a lot of yards, but it
wasn't really a sustaining factor on a weekly basis. So
(44:13):
there was not really a physical element to this offense
on a weekly basis. And don't I don't think you'll
ever find a defensive head coach ian And I know
I'm generalizing obviously, very rarely will you find a defensive
head coach that doesn't want his offensive football team to
(44:33):
be physical and to be able to line up and
run the ball. And you know, again, I'm just interpreting,
you know, without knowing exactly what's in Mike McDonald's head.
There could be other reasons. I'm sure there are that
I would have no idea about. But there's no question
that this was not a physical offensive football team.
Speaker 5 (44:53):
Mike McDonald said that when he was hired that they
want the offense of and even said that when when
Ryan Groub was higher, we want a team that just
what you said mirrors how we want to play physical football, Bob.
All those things, dude, when you're watching when you're watching
the tape, and you're watching tapes of thirty two offenses
around the NFL. Were there any traits of the Ryan
(45:14):
Grubb offense that you saw that were well, I'll give
you a quote. I'm I'm gonna give you this. This
this paraphrase quote from my friend Curtis Krabtree who works
for Fox thirteen, and he had a Seahawk front office
person tell him. I want to say it was right
around the bye week. And then there were rumors around
(45:35):
the bye week that and it comes out later from
a couple other sources that Curtis and I both heard
from that they almost made a move with Grub at
the bye week and this what they what they said
was our running game is a college level running game
in terms of schemes and how it was put together.
And I thought that was an interesting concept or interesting
(45:56):
conversation that was from someone in the Seahawks front office
that's on the personnel side, on the football side, and
they said, it's it's basically a college a college run
game scheme, something along those lines. It was a shot
at what maybe it's I guess what it would sound like,
is a basic running scheme offensively at least for for grub.
With that being some context for you, did you see
(46:16):
anything on tape that was like a red flag that
maybe comparing to other teams that jumped out at you
and said, boy, that's just not NFL level offense that
I'm watching right now in terms of what you see.
Speaker 8 (46:27):
Boy, that that's hard for me to answer because I
think that most teams, and again I'll enter it this way,
I don't know during the week of what went into
how they approached the run game from a game planning standpoint. See,
that's what I don't know, because for the most part,
teams do run a lot of the same plays. There's
(46:48):
not a thousand running plays in so teams do run
a lot of the same plays. Now, it's then it
gets down to what kind of run game do you
want against specific components? What kind of run game do
you call? During the course of a game, do you
feel like adjustments have to be made? I mean, there's
no question that this run game very rarely started off well,
(47:13):
and that could be much more of a factor than
you know, what I'm seeing on tape. That could, in
a sense be sort of the genesis of it all
week long. You know, how they went about game planning,
you know, because I know there were games. I think
the first Niners game comes to mind. There'd be others
(47:33):
if we had more time and I could really think
about it, where they clearly decided to come out and
run the football, which meant that was game planned all
week long and they had zero success. Zero success. So
that to me is more of a gameplan issue, and
that could be what the people in the building, your
sources are talking about, because once you get to the game,
(47:55):
you know, I could sit here and say, oh, there's
a gap scheme, run, there's his zone run. You know,
every team. I don't want to make it sound that
simple because it's obviously not. But like I said, it's
not as if there's a thousand different running plays, and
good running teams are doing things that nobody else has
ever seen or ever done. You know, it's it's really
more in the approach, the game planning. When you run it,
(48:18):
how you run them, you know, how do you get
to them with you know, your your formations, your motions,
your shifts, you know your backfield actions. You know, I
always felt in what and again I don't I met
Ryan Grubb for five minutes when he was. I was
actually at the Titans training camp when the Seahawks were
they out, But I don't know Ryan Grub, but I
(48:38):
did tell him, I said, hey, you know, I watched
you at the University of Washington. I loved your passing game.
You know, maybe he's more of a passing game guy,
because the run. The run game in college is nothing
like the run game in the NFL. Nothing, They're two
totally different things. And maybe Ryan Grubb, if given time,
would have you know, developed, you know, more of an
(49:01):
acceptable run game for Mike McDonald and others in the building.
But obviously Mike McDonald didn't want to give him that
kind of time, and that's his prerogative.
Speaker 5 (49:09):
He's dead coach and along those lines. So let me
just bow on this. We know how bad the offensive
line was, but is it safe to say is it
safe to say it wasn't just the offensive line that
wo shoot for the Seahawks running attack this season.
Speaker 8 (49:27):
I mean, based on what you're telling me, I think
that's fair to say. But I also think the old
line wasn't very good. And I think a lot of
players they counted on to be, you know, really important
players on the old line did not end up being
really you know, we've talked about Charles Cross. I mean,
I know this is a pass play, but you even
saw it on the first series this past week when
Jared Verse just drove him right back into the pocket.
(49:49):
That kind of thing has happened all year long. I
don't think Lake and Tomlinson, who I'm sure they came
in signed as a free agent and expected him to
be a powerful driving I'm not sure he played up
to that level. We know the center position got kind
of stuck. They had to play with Timmy, who to
me is kind of a plays well in a vacuum.
(50:13):
I don't think he's much more than that, but maybe
they maybe they see it differently. We know the right
guard position was a revolving door all season. Right tackle,
you know, I think you were probably the next man
up given all the injuries they had at right tackle.
So I mean, you know, the offensive line turned out
to be a problem all season long as well.
Speaker 5 (50:34):
My knees might be the only knees in Seattle worse
than Abe Lucases right now. So I don't think I
was the next guy up, but that was pretty close
along those Such a final thing on the offensive line.
As we kind of wrap up the Seahawks season with
Greg Cosel brought to by Seattle Sider. I want you
to elaborate again because this is something that I've I've
you've You've been consistent with this all year. There are
(50:55):
people that will point to some of the so called
analytical websites another places Charles Cross is fine, he's a
he's a really good player. He's this that you've had
concerns over Charles Cross for a while.
Speaker 8 (51:07):
Correct, Well, just let me say one thing. My concerns
are all tape based. You know. It's because you know,
we're all on social media because we have to be,
and people always say to me, that's a hot take.
I don't do takes. What I'm telling you is based
on what the film shows, you know, So I think
he struggled in particular in pass pro. So to me, yes,
(51:30):
he is. Now, don't forget he was a top ten pick.
When you draft a left tackle on the top ten,
I'm not saying you're fitting him for a Hall of
Fame jacket a week after your draft him, but you
would expect that guy to be a top five offensive
tackle in the league, particularly in pass protection. You know,
I've had a lot of conversations with coaches who o
line coaches I'm talking about, who tell me that if
(51:51):
you're not comfortable with your left tackle blocking one on
one on third down, and then that's a big problem.
And I think that that at times has been an issue.
So I'm not sitting here saying Charles Cross should be
cut and he's a bad player, but you know, when
you structure your pass game, you should be able to say,
no problem with Charles Cross, He's gonna block one on one.
(52:12):
Whoever that pass rusher.
Speaker 5 (52:14):
Is Greg Cosell joining us, I'll wrap up the offense
with this. Gino Smith. They sound effusive in his praise
to bring him back, and I say, vey, that was
Mike McDonald the other day. Yeah, when you watch Gino
Smith on tape throughout the seventeen games this season, and
you know what's out there, the Sam Donold's of the world,
the you know, Kirk Cousins of the world, and different
(52:37):
things like that. Not a good draft for quarterbacks. What's
your tape evaluation of Gino Smith from this year and
moving ahead? Do you think.
Speaker 8 (52:45):
I thought Gino Smith acquitted himself really well this year?
Given all the issues we've spoken about, I think he's tough,
he's competitive, he throws a beautiful ball. I think he's
aggressive and willing to make tough throw and I think
every once in a while that'll lead to a pick
that's a head scratcher. But for the most part, I
(53:06):
really like what Gino Smith did under really trying circumstances.
You know, the old line was a revolving door. So
and you know what, a lot of people are now
starting to ask me about quarterbacks, okay, because you know,
even some quarterbacks like Rock Purty, I get that a lot.
You know, people must think there's a quarterback store that
you just go in and you buy a better quarterback.
(53:27):
You know, quarterbacks don't fall out of the sky, you know.
I mean it's easy to say that, oh you know,
well Gino is not you know Josh Allen. Well no,
he's not Josh Allen. But you know what, there's not
many of those guys, and they don't fall out of
the sky, so you know, and you can't just go
buy one at the store. So you know, Geno Smith,
to me is a is a very professional NFL quarterback,
(53:49):
and almost every quarterback needs a team and you know
that might sound cliched and people might say, you know
that that's not true, but it is true. And I
thought Gino Smith, under the circumstances, had a really solid season.
Speaker 5 (54:05):
There's no quarterback store. Are you sure? I thought you
just go get I am.
Speaker 8 (54:09):
Pretty sure about That's one thing I am sure about. Man.
Speaker 5 (54:13):
When I used to cover the NBA in Portland and
Salt Lake, I used to always laugh because people would
say things like, yeah, that Kobe Bryant, that Michael Like,
they're really good players. Like we need a guy like that,
really sure?
Speaker 8 (54:24):
Yeah, Yeah, I mean there's not one hundred of those guys.
Speaker 5 (54:28):
Yeah, just go get Josh Allen. I mean there's a
that's a good player. Can't you go get a guy
like that? Yeah, those those guys come out every single year.
There's ten of them.
Speaker 8 (54:36):
Are saying, you know, so much is dependent on team.
You know, it's funny because I'm in the Philadelphia area. Okay,
Jentleen Hurts is a good player. No one would say
he's not a good player. But the best rushing team
in the NFL. They were the best defensive team in
the NFL. You know, they their defense played the fewest
plays in the league, which is a big stat by
the way, that no one talks about. You know, and
(54:56):
I'm not saying that makes it easy to play quarterback,
but the point is, Jalen Hurts doesn't have to be
great every single snap in every single game. You know,
the team is so much a part of how you play. Okay,
and that, and then it gets hard for a quarterback.
That's why what Joe Burrow did this year. And I
(55:16):
don't have an MVP vote, and I don't like those
conversations because it just leads to mindless debate. But you know,
Joe Burrow, he had to go into every game thinking
that if I don't score thirty five, we've got no
chance to win.
Speaker 5 (55:30):
You know how hard that is? Yeah, very yeah, very hard.
So we have a college football team that jess Night
Love that has that same problem University. Uh all right,
let's go to the defense for the final couple minutes
before we got to let great co sell go brought
to by Seattlesider, Let's talk about the defense start of
the year, at to end of the year. I'm assuming
that the tape showed you quite a bit of improvement,
(55:52):
quite a.
Speaker 8 (55:52):
Bit of improvement, not only you know, I think just
understanding what was asked of them and the improvement of
individual players and players who've been around had really good seasons,
like Leonard Williams. I thought that, and I don't know
what their thought is going to next season. I thought
Josh job handled himself well as the nickel outside corner.
I don't know if they see him as the guy
for next year and they feel comfortable with that, but
(56:14):
I thought he played very well given that he was
a free agent because he was in Philly here. I
remember doing him coming out of Alabama, and I thought
he was he was worthy of being given a shot
as an NFL starter. You know, Ernest Jones obviously solidified
the linebacking corps. I thought the rookie Night handled himself
very well. We saw what Williams did, you know. I
thought Murphy started to show up later in the season.
(56:37):
You can't judge statistics with defensive tackles. For the most part,
they don't necessarily mean a lot. I mean, I know,
watching college tape, there's times I'll see a defensive tackle
have one tackle in a game, and then I watched
the tape all seventy five plays and the guy dominated
the game, so you can't just look at stats for
a dtackle. You know, obviously they had some injuries in WUSU,
(56:57):
you know, didn't play a whole season. I thought, my,
you know, he's an improving player. This defense I think
will continue to get better and better under Mike McDonald, who,
you know, obviously it's a really smart defensive coach. I
don't think defense is a big issue. We've talked about
Julian Love, you know, I think he's a really really
good player.
Speaker 5 (57:15):
The trait of the Mike McDonald defense, what were they
fumeltive now that we look back at seventeen games.
Speaker 8 (57:22):
You know, I remember having this conversation with someone who
was on the offensive staff with the Ravens and said
that one of the things that Mike McDonald does really
well is he doesn't over complicate things for the players.
Is that a lot of different players do different things
in his defense, but he doesn't make it complicated for
them to understand how to go about doing that. And
I think that shows up because they're not necessarily one
(57:44):
of those defenses you watch Ian wie sche manically go
oh my god, they're doing a hundred things. Well look
at this, look at that. Look at this guy blitzer,
look at this guy blitzing. They're not like that, but
they're just they do a certain number of things. I
thought they started playing obviously a lot more big nickel,
you know, once Jenkins got and I think that's something
that you know, is part of his approach. I think,
(58:05):
you know, you get better athletes out on the field,
you know, because Jenkins is a guy that can play
near the line of scrimmage. So you know, to me,
this is a defense that's built more on just fundamentally
sound play as opposed to I don't. I would never
use the word of Vanella with defense because every coach
has so many little disciplines that I have no idea about,
(58:28):
so I would never use that word. But when I
watch them, I feel like it's much more of an
execution defense than a highly schematic defense, and that guys
really understand what their roles are.
Speaker 5 (58:40):
All right, let me wrap it up with the final
thing for you, Greg. It's wild Card weekend. You guys
are breaking stuff down. I'm sure on your on the
matchup sho oh yeah.
Speaker 8 (58:47):
We did all six games. It's it's the toughest show
of the year. Six games and four segments.
Speaker 5 (58:52):
Give me one game that that just for whatever reason,
jumps out at you. Give me one of the six
that jumps out at you.
Speaker 8 (58:57):
And why, Oh, Vikings Rams I find fascinating. Why Because
I think that the Vikings, and this isn't talked about
a lot. I think the Vikings weak link on offense
is their old line. And I think, as you know,
because they're in your division, that young rams d line
has come on so strong, particularly when they're in their
sub fronts. When they have Young and Verse on the
(59:20):
outside and Turner and Fisk on the inside, that is
a really tough group to block. And watching the Lions,
the Vikings against the Lions last Sunday night, not the
only time obviously, but I think that old line for
the Vikings has struggled all the year in pass protection
and I think that could be a deciding factor in
this game.
Speaker 5 (59:40):
Interesting too, because now because of the tragedy that is
taking place in southern California, it's being here, I know,
to Arizona.
Speaker 8 (59:46):
So oh and by the way, seeing those pictures, not
to get off topic, but I mean I'm sitting here,
you know, and we complain here in the northeast g
it's cold outside. Then I see those pictures and I think, boy,
I got it pretty good.
Speaker 5 (59:56):
I know we were saying the same thing up here.
It's rainy, it's gloomy, it's dark here today it felt
like it's it feels like this. You know, we're never
gonna see the sunshine again sometimes, And I'm with you.
It's we'll take that over what's going on down there.
From a football standpoint though, neutral site game, so it's
a little bit different. Probably. You know, it's gonna be
hard for people to get their rams wise, and and
(01:00:17):
you know Vikings fans are probably gonna flock there. Now.
I would assume, you know, easy to get to Airic
to Phoenix, but we'll see. But yeah, I think that's
I'm with you. I kind of think that that could
be sneaky good. When the best matchup of the weekend,
although it's taking place on Monday, Greg, this is always fun.
And I tell you this, and you know, and and
and Jess and Anders will tell you the same thing.
We get great feedback on this segment every Friday, and
(01:00:39):
and we just love doing it. I cannot thank Mora
and Seattle Cider and their group enough. The best sider
in the state, in the West coast and the country
craft sider fantastic, go check out the tap room. I'm
going back to see her next week and say, hey, Mara,
we need to get great coat sell on pre draft,
all right, we need to get that going, so we
may give you a couple of weeks off.
Speaker 8 (01:00:59):
I say, you know, because and I'll be real quick here,
just because the way that the season works out, and
obviously a little less tape this week. I started watching
cam Ward today, just say, you know.
Speaker 5 (01:01:11):
So you're gonna leave me with that, all right, so
that listen, well, I believe.
Speaker 8 (01:01:15):
Just knows where he played before.
Speaker 2 (01:01:16):
Miami just slightly aware, slightly.
Speaker 5 (01:01:19):
Aware aware might have been on the sideline and interviewed
him handful of times. Yes, she's very aware, and and
I just love that little that's perfect of you. Just
to throw that out there. As we wrap things up
on the regular, I'm gonna have to pay to.
Speaker 8 (01:01:31):
Jess about cam Ward to find out about him.
Speaker 2 (01:01:33):
You know, hey, I think we follow each other on
Twitter to send me a d M.
Speaker 5 (01:01:38):
Yeah, well yeah, well you know, I love the fact
that you are so he's is he part of the
Quarterback Store? We just go drive go buy one of
the quarterbacks store drive by.
Speaker 8 (01:01:48):
He's right out front with Shader Sanders. They're just hanging
out right out front of the quarterback store.
Speaker 5 (01:01:53):
We may we may have a we may have to
have a session to pre draft with you and your
friend Hugh Millen, because that thing got more people listening,
watching and hitting and going back to this in the
podcast and ever before, so we'll do that as well.
In the meantime, thank you, thank you, and thank you,
thank you to Seattlesider, and thank you to Greg for
carving out time for us every Friday dur in the
football season. Go enjoy the games, do all the other hits,
(01:02:16):
do all the film study you do, and we're gonna
see you probably in a few weeks. All right.
Speaker 8 (01:02:20):
I appreciate Ian, Thanks everybody. I love being with you guys.
Speaker 5 (01:02:23):
There you go. That's great. CoA said, we'll take a break.
Come back more from the snow Call me Casino. Rob
Brandt coming up a two o'clock niney three point three KTERFM.
Now back to.
Speaker 1 (01:02:33):
The Washington State Beat Commissions Football Friday with the Infernets
on your home for the NFL Sports Radio ninety three
point three KJR FM.
Speaker 5 (01:02:50):
Back in the snow, call me casino at hotel. Hotel's
not open yet. I should say that they want to. Hey,
they're branding. Is their branding. I'm just gonna if you're
thinking about coming up here and staying, you're gonna be
out of luck for a few more months. I'm gonna
post something on the old gram here in a minute.
I took some pictures of the hotel driving in as
(01:03:12):
I pulled into property. Today. Here still Couma Casino, and
we're also in the sports book today as we Jess
and I are hanging out. Andrew's kind enough to be
working back at the studio today.
Speaker 3 (01:03:22):
I was so kind.
Speaker 2 (01:03:24):
I'll bring you back a cookie.
Speaker 3 (01:03:26):
Great, Well you walcome, I can.
Speaker 5 (01:03:29):
You're good. He's fine. Don't worry about him. Look at
me anyway.
Speaker 2 (01:03:34):
Hey, there's Washington State beef in the office. I know
that for a fact. You got lunch brought to you.
Speaker 3 (01:03:38):
Yes, haven't seen it yet. Maybe you have to go
look in the right thick day.
Speaker 5 (01:03:41):
Oh, I think they. I think they're waiting for Softy
right before the daily power play. We'll get to in
just to comments. Sportsbook is here. You've got NFL Playoff Weekend,
wild Card Weekend Round one coming up this week tomorrow,
all day Sunday, all day, my night in Glendale. They
(01:04:01):
had to move that game. We'll tell you something at
the end of the day, Daily power play for looking
for a way to help those effected down in southern California.
Our heart's got some stuff going on. We'll tell you
about that. The walkar weekend's fun. Division Weekend's a ton
of fun. Then obviously get to the conference championship weekend.
I gotta keep looking at seeing when I've got hockey games,
because I just this is Normally i'd be like, all right,
let's go. I'm just sitting there and watch football weekend.
(01:04:23):
But we got early hockey games tomorrow and Sunday. The
sports book is here. They got the app which you
can use. Very interactive, very fun, so go check it out.
Come on by. We're gonna do some fun stuff here.
Like I said, we're gonna be up here the next
two fridays after this for divisional weekend, Conference Championship weekend,
will be up here for the Friday before Super Bowl.
(01:04:44):
Be back here during March Madness as well. That's all
I'm gonna say about March Madness because my team will
not be involved in March Madness after losing to Pacific
last night.
Speaker 2 (01:04:56):
That was tough.
Speaker 5 (01:04:57):
That was awful. Man read that was awful. How do
you allow a three off balance like that? I I
don't know. I don't know. I think there's part of
me thinks that old Nate keel me he's there as
a double agent working for Washington still because the hero
ball and missing free throws at the end kind of
(01:05:18):
felt that way, like is he part of some sort
of conspiracy? Is he working for the Huskies. That's kind
of what I felt like yesterday. I love the kid
for a while, but man, hit a free throw, just one.
Then the kid from Greenland or Iceland, where the hell
he's from, he couldn't hit a free throw? Is it
that hard? Isn't that really that hard? People?
Speaker 2 (01:05:34):
Isn't that what you practice? The most right you're going
in It's the only uncontested shot you're really gonna take.
Speaker 5 (01:05:38):
Yeah. I love those guys. They've done a lot. I'm
mad today. Ethan Price got hurt. I don't know he's
gonna play tomorrow. Who knows rolled his ankle? They've got
like they're down, like five scholarships.
Speaker 2 (01:05:48):
They're they're decimated, dude to Andrey.
Speaker 5 (01:05:50):
Yeah, and it sucks because in a normal world of
college athletics, back in the day, back in the day,
two years ago, three years ago, like, oh, I can't
wait till next year. He's so good, he's so good,
Cedric Coward comes back. All these guys extuft for price,
come back. Isaiah's healthy. Oh no, there's a little thing
called the portal in the nil so who knows, okay.
Speaker 4 (01:06:12):
Because you can kind of look to build something and
look take positives from a season where you know.
Speaker 5 (01:06:16):
You can't do that.
Speaker 3 (01:06:17):
I know nothing more right, I know.
Speaker 5 (01:06:18):
And that's that's why I was so upset last night,
because I think this team had a legit chance to
get to the well they did a lot of people
hadn't projected is in the tournament. Yeah, even you can
even lose to Gonzaga a couple of times, doesn't matter.
You're still going to get in be Saint Mary's once
do decent. I mean, that's what's that's the that's kind
of the harsh reality of college sports where they are
(01:06:39):
right now, and as what you take out of great
CoA sale where the tapes.
Speaker 3 (01:06:41):
Say, Uh, Well, a couple of things.
Speaker 4 (01:06:43):
Number one, he was very critical of the running game,
which kind of goes line in line with the quote
that you heard within the Seahawks organization, uh, and that
how different it is from college running games. And that
would make sense why there was such a big kind
of gap between uh, Ryan Grubb's success in at Washington
(01:07:05):
and Ryan Grub's success in Seattle at the Seahawks.
Speaker 3 (01:07:09):
And then the Geno Smith conversation.
Speaker 4 (01:07:11):
I love the the there's no just QB store you can.
Speaker 5 (01:07:17):
There's no QB store. Who knew?
Speaker 4 (01:07:20):
But that what I instantly thought about when he said
that was that's coming from someone who watches a lot
of quarterback play, and that's probably the main thing that
he evaluates when he watches all this tape quarterback play.
And I think, if nothing else, it says it could
be a lot worse Seattle. It really could be.
Speaker 5 (01:07:39):
I think that's the hardest thing for everyone to kind
of wrap their arms around it, you know, And Gino
would drive a lot of us crazy. I think if
you're stark, Finny drives crazy. Sometimes the arm talent's undeniable.
The decision making and the processing is Hugh talks about
all the time and you know, throw it to the
right player at the right time with accuracy. Secretly, yeah,
right right player, right time, accuracy And he talks about
(01:08:02):
that all the time. Well, Gino can throw with accuracy.
He can throw to the right player. It's not always
at the right time right because sometimes or he or
there's one with Gino, it's one of the three is
always seems to be missing, not always, but missing enough.
You know, we talked about a hardcore football Monday. If
(01:08:23):
people miss the hardcore Football Monday, I go back and
listen to Hugh. It's really good stuff talking about about
Geno and you know, we and we we kind of
based it on I know, people get really upset about this.
I don't know why they do, but I brought up
to Hugh. I said, Hugh, I really felt like in
the Chicago game, in this game, this guy was checked down.
(01:08:43):
Charlie and we kind of joked about the intended air
yards and all that we might go back and reverse it.
We might actually, you know, it'll be fun on Monday. Yeah,
I'm gonna produce on the air here.
Speaker 3 (01:08:54):
All right, here we go.
Speaker 5 (01:08:57):
I feel the enthusiasm from the two of you it's
just oozed right now.
Speaker 2 (01:09:01):
That's just me and and I have to do more work.
Speaker 3 (01:09:04):
That's exactly what it means.
Speaker 5 (01:09:07):
But yeah, yeah, I think it would be interesting to
pull the intended air yards shove in the water stuff
with you. Oh yeah, him play that with what Cosel
was talking about with Gino Smith and his play this year. Okay,
I think we could do that on Monday and that
a little bit. Yeah, it'd be fun conversation.
Speaker 4 (01:09:26):
Well, I like what Greg said about comparing him to
Jalen Hurts as well, because there's so few quarterbacks that
can elevate a roster that is bad around him. There's
probably less than five in the league today that can
play well and take a team of the playoffs with
a bad roster offensively around him, And I just like
(01:09:48):
that he's not one of those guys.
Speaker 3 (01:09:49):
But I don't think that's a terrible thing.
Speaker 5 (01:09:51):
Let me let me I think that question. I think
that question is a good one. Who who really does
elevate their team? Joe Burrow yes, Pat Mahomes yes, does
Lamar Yes? Yes, yeah, Lamar? Does Josh Allen yes, Josh
Allen yes. And I'm kind of going through the list
(01:10:12):
of the top quarterbacks. Does Justin Herbert No, No, I
don't think he does. No, he elevates the entire I.
Speaker 4 (01:10:18):
Mean he plays well within his system. But he has
a really good team around him too.
Speaker 5 (01:10:25):
I'm going through the list. I think that Stafford Stafford. Yes,
I put Stafford in there. Stafford, Matt Poka Naku is
a damn borderline All Pro. Thanks, and Matt Stafford. Tyler
Higbee looks like a good tight end sometimes.
Speaker 3 (01:10:42):
Yeah, okay, I'll give you Stafford. I'll give you staff.
Speaker 5 (01:10:44):
Yeah, Stafford. I want to hate, but I can't know.
He just he does, he makes plays.
Speaker 3 (01:10:48):
He does. I think it's kind of it that is.
Speaker 5 (01:10:51):
I'm going down the list.
Speaker 1 (01:10:52):
C J.
Speaker 5 (01:10:52):
Stroud and I mean he did get Nico Collins and
did have Tank down to make them better.
Speaker 4 (01:10:59):
You don't think Jane Daniels No, Yeah, but this year
had really good old line, good playmakers around him, decent defense,
good coaching. Like I mean, I'm not saying that naked
wide receiver.
Speaker 3 (01:11:14):
Yeah, and he's we can't tell well within the system, right.
Speaker 5 (01:11:18):
I think dan Quinn elevated him.
Speaker 3 (01:11:20):
Yeah. Absolutely.
Speaker 5 (01:11:21):
I don't know if I mean and Jade that they're
not the playoffs with Sam Howell.
Speaker 3 (01:11:25):
No, they're not.
Speaker 5 (01:11:26):
But did he elevate the entire team around him?
Speaker 7 (01:11:29):
No?
Speaker 5 (01:11:30):
I mean when you go to the quarterback store, what
shelf would he be on? A great coach sales talking
about his quarterbacks?
Speaker 8 (01:11:34):
Right?
Speaker 5 (01:11:34):
Which is he on the bargain shelf? Is he on
the He's probably not us D A prime, He's probably choice,
the choice beat for our watching the State Beef Commission.
Speaker 6 (01:11:45):
Right?
Speaker 3 (01:11:45):
Like that?
Speaker 5 (01:11:46):

Speaker 2 (01:11:47):

Speaker 12 (01:12:51):
Front, knocked down and they score Denton, but Tait shot Seattle.
All types have turned around in their defense sive zone,
and the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Speaker 5 (01:13:03):
Now of a stranglehold on this game.
Speaker 12 (01:13:05):
It's a four one Columbus lead, seven thirty three left
until the break.
Speaker 5 (01:13:11):
That is Uh, the voice Revere fits you, by the way,
when you heard that bang in the background, that wasn't
al Kiniski getting pissed off and having and everything like that.
They have this goofy ass cannon there in Columbus.
Speaker 3 (01:13:23):
It's the weirdest thing in goals.
Speaker 5 (01:13:25):
Yeah. When I went to the game there, I did that.
That was the second game I guess I did. The
third game ever in franchise history was in Columbus back
in twenty twenty one. And uh, yeah, that thing, I
had no warning. Nobody told me about it, and so yeah,
that scared the living you know what out of me
when it happened.
Speaker 3 (01:13:42):
It's an actual it's an actual thing.
Speaker 5 (01:13:45):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, And they're the Blue Jackets, So
I'm not really sure what the connection is. They're confused
back there in Ohio, but they weren't last night. They
just went out and I don't know, scored a lot
four in the second.
Speaker 3 (01:14:00):
That team could score. Man, that team their.
Speaker 5 (01:14:02):
Top two centers and they still put six ups. Yeah,
that's what's really bad, buddy, that's just bad, bad night.
It's the struggle, man, It is an absolute struggle. I
did the cracking this morning or whatever? What is it
Benton does at Cracking this morning?
Speaker 3 (01:14:17):

I couldn't move too far away from a Farelli Zen,
So yeah, there was one by Hawks Prairie, which is

it's about ten twelve minutes away from the new Tonito house.
Speaker 6 (01:22:20):
There's one in Tumwater.
Speaker 11 (01:22:21):
So yes, I'm very excited to be getting that Northwest

Speaker 7 (01:22:26):
I love it. That's absolutely fantastic.
Speaker 5 (01:22:28):
All right, Hey, I want to We'll get to the
National Championship semi final tonight college football playoffs semi final
tonight with Ohio State and Texas and the players to watch.
Speaker 7 (01:22:36):
And we'll get to that in just a second.
Speaker 5 (01:22:38):
I do want to point your latest article at Fox sports.
Speaker 7 (01:22:41):
Dot com and I was going to ask you this
and then I saw it.
Speaker 5 (01:22:45):
You've got cam Ward number one right now, the Miami
quarterback from Erwazoo quarterback. I know there's you like Travis
Hunter a lot as well. This is a kind of
a twofold question. Do you think cam Ward will go
number one? There's always movement at the top of the
draft with trays. But do you think cam Ward will
go number one and number two? How many first round
(01:23:07):
quarterbacks are there in this year's draft.
Speaker 11 (01:23:11):
Well, I really think it's gonna be kind of a
toss up between cam Ward from Miami, of course, and
Shador Sanderson Colorado. Those are the only two quarterbacks at
this point ian who I see have a have a
realistic shot at the first round. I think that there's
a puncher's chance for Jalen Monroe from Alabama. You know, look,
when you start really breaking these players down, the bigger, stronger, armed,
(01:23:34):
faster athlete is unquestionably Jalen Monroe. And then now at
the same time, he's also unquestionably the least accurate of
those three. I also think that that Penn States Drew Aller,
who who played well at times, and you know, unfortunately
if you're a Nitney Lions fan, then he threw the
interception late in the in the Cotton Bowl that that
(01:23:56):
led excuse me, led in the Orange Bowl that led
to the led to the Nittany Lions losing that game
and Notre Dame qualifying for the National Championship. At absolute
mostly and I see four quarterbacks, I believe that Drew
Aller is going to stay with what he said he
was going to do, and that's return to Penn State.
And again it makes some sense given the fact that
he's going to be smarting this morning, you know. But
(01:24:18):
at the same time, I also think that that Jayle
Monroe is the is the a little bit of the
wild card, just because we know the desperation of NFL teams,
that the quarterback class as a whole in terms of
twenty twenty five NFL Draft is not a good one.
The free agent crop is not expected to be a
good one. Other than Sam Donald. It remains to be
(01:24:38):
seeing what's going to happen there. So really, when it's
all said and done, and I really think it's going
to be again a toss up between Shador Sanders, who
is my personal top rated quarterback because of his accuracy,
because of the poison the pocket, because the fact that
you know, frankly, he has grew up his entire life
with the spotlight on him. And while I've questioned some
(01:24:58):
of his leadership and some decision making when it comes
down to between the lines and the football field, Tradora
Sanders again does have the mental ability that I'm looking
for at the quarterback positioning, he certainly has the accuracy.
When it comes to cam Woard, there's a little bit
more of the improvisational game that that teams might fall
in love with, just because you're seeing quarterbacks who did
(01:25:19):
that in college, like a Jordan Love or certainly of
Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen who have been able to
translate that success the college level to the NFL, but.
Speaker 6 (01:25:28):
They're far and few between.
Speaker 11 (01:25:30):
For me, cam Ward I think is significantly the number
two quarterback in this class. But again, his ability to
make magic happen something that they saw on the plus
saw at Miami, and of course they saw it all
the way back. You know, he does have some some
it factor to him that I think makes this is
going to make this a fascinating, you know, challenge all
(01:25:50):
the way through the draft.
Speaker 7 (01:25:52):
We are going to talk a lot as the as
the months go on.
Speaker 5 (01:25:55):
We usually give Rob Blake, I don't know, one or
two weeks off after the college football playoffs.
Speaker 7 (01:25:59):
And which will be after next week.
Speaker 5 (01:26:00):
We'll probably in fact, I'm just looking ahead, we'll probably
get Rob on next Friday or next Monday to preview
the title game on the twentieth. But after that we
usually give Rob I don't know, maybe one or two
weeks off and then we call our friends at for
Allies and say, hey, let's let's let's do Rob rang
heading into the draft, and that's when we really make
our Hey, we'll go deep dive more into the quarterback
class and all that. I think it's interesting for Seahawk
(01:26:20):
fans to hear that, though, like when people ask are
their options other than Geno Smith right now? Certainly in
the college ranks, if Jalen Milrow will not get you excited,
he's not going to take you to the playoffs in
the year one. Maybe he develops into a really good quarterback,
but I don't think there's any doubt about that.
Speaker 7 (01:26:34):
And there's some other guys.
Speaker 5 (01:26:35):
I do want to ask you about one guy from
last night's game, and we probably touched on him on
this at some point this year, but maybe not Rob.
Speaker 6 (01:26:43):
I'm not sure.
Speaker 5 (01:26:43):
Tyler Warren the Penn State and Nite Lions tight end.
Where do you see him going? And I mean we
hear the Kittle comparisons and things like that. You see
the impact guys like Travis Kelcey had made over the
years you see what all of a sudden, what Mark
Andrews is doing. I mean, he had a slow start
to the season, and now Mark Andrews has become really
the go to guy for Lamar Jackson at the tight
end position, Hawkinson, Laporta, other guys.
Speaker 7 (01:27:06):
Where do you see Tyler Warren the outstanding tight end
for Penn State.
Speaker 5 (01:27:10):
Where do you see him going and what kind of
impact do you think he'll make?
Speaker 6 (01:27:14):
Well?
Speaker 11 (01:27:14):
At this point, I have him as a mid first
round selection. And there's not a lot of legitimate blue
chip lockdown first round selections this year, and obviously there's
going to be thirty two players that get picked. But
when it comes to the evaluation process, you know, we
kind of talk about the fact that you know, typically
there is ten to twelve, maybe at most fifteen guys
(01:27:37):
that you know, in a given year really should be
first round picks. In my mind, there's only six or
seven guys, and Tyler Warren being one of those guys,
six five, two hundred and fifty five pounds. He's got
terrific body control, really soft hands, you know, as he
did in last night's game, he he did all year long.
Just when Penn State need a big play, that's who
(01:27:58):
they were going to be looking for. Is number forty four.
All the comparisons that are all the names that you
just mentioned, George Kittle and Travis Kelcey in particular, just
because of his speed and the Tanasiocuchi blocks is the
line of scrimmage. There's a couple of other really good
tight ends out there this year. I think that there
could be a possibility of three of them, Colston Lovelin
(01:28:20):
from Michigan, Mason Taylor from LSU, who I also think
are going to be first round caliber players.
Speaker 6 (01:28:26):
And that's one of the reasons why.
Speaker 11 (01:28:27):
And I think that there could be a chance that
you see Tyler Warren slip down the board.
Speaker 6 (01:28:32):
A little bit earlier or a little bit.
Speaker 11 (01:28:34):
Later into the teams, then maybe in the top ten
like he should be. But this is a terrific player.
I know that he has been mocked to the Seahawks
by some. I think the fact that Aj Barnard quietly
finished number two among all rookie tight ends this past
season four touchdown receptions. Obviously it's not Brock Bowers Las
Vegas Raiders and All Pro selection as a rookie, but
(01:28:55):
at the same time, like the Seahawks are pretty satisfied
with their young tight end, So I would be surprised
if ye how the want to go that direction. But
certainly any NFL team that is looking for a seam
stretcher and a security blanket for a quarterback, they certainly
would have that with Tyler Warren.
Speaker 5 (01:29:09):
Yeah, you would think that the Bowers year that he had,
along with the guys I mentioned as well, that kind
of that probably changes the thinking of a lot of
teams in terms of that position. Rob rang Joinning is
courtesy of Ferrelli's Pizza Freliespizza dot Com throughout the South Sound.
All right, let's talk about tonight's game. Rob, here we go.
It's Ohio State and it's Texas. Man, there's a time.
I mean, this is this is probably for guys like you.
(01:29:30):
This is like a scout's dream, isn't it. I mean,
I'm not sure who isn't a prospect in terms of
the twenty two guys starting and every on both sides
of the ball.
Speaker 11 (01:29:38):
And you and I have been working long enough that
you know the way I'm kind of built in shaped.
I'm a little hefty guy, and so it's like the
day before Thanksgiving, when you're kind of just getting yourself
mentally ready for the feast. That that's really what this
game between Ohio State and Texas to me, these are
the two most talented teams that are our remaining Obviously
there's only three, and like all deer respect to Notre Dame,
(01:30:00):
I don't have a top fifty prospect on Notre Dame
at this point, whereas Ohio State I've got six, Texas
I've got four, you know, and I really think that
Ohio State. We talked so much about the local products
the defensive end, j T. Twoey Mololau from Eastside Catholic,
imega Abuka previously at Stillicum High School as a wide receiver.
(01:30:21):
I think both of them are going to wind up
being first round selections. They are not consensus first round
picks when you look at all the different mock drafts
out there, but when you really break down their game
inan they're just so pro ready. They do the little
things so very well. Tyler Williams, the defensive tackle, six
to two, three hundred and twenty seven pounds, He is
really round, kind of talking about Thanksgiving a moment ago,
(01:30:44):
but he's also very very quick, uses his hands well
and for a big man, he really hustles well to
the football, So you're very excited about him. I love
the running back combination that Ohio State has Quinn Shawn
Judkins five to eleven twitter nine teen pounds. It's a
story similar to what Jamiir Gibbs did a couple of
years ago.
Speaker 6 (01:31:05):
He had been a.
Speaker 11 (01:31:05):
Star previously at Tennessee, wound up transferring to Alabama, and
you know, he didn't put up the incredible numbers that
a lot of people were expecting, and so that's one
of the reasons why he wasn't as highly regarding the
pre draft process until the Detroit Lions quote unquote reached
for him. And now he's got an absolute superstar. Jamiir
(01:31:25):
Gibbs again five eleven two or nineteen pounds. He's got
great lateral legility and straightaway speed. I think that he
is going to be a rising prospect in this entire process.
And then Trayon Henderson five ten, two hundred and eight
pounds a little bit more that short, squatty power back
that were used to come out of Ohio State. He
(01:31:46):
also was a top one hundred candidate, and finally I'd
be remiss if I didn't mention the player since we
talked about the Seahawks in the mock draft, Josh Simmons.
He's the best player that you will not see in
tonight's game because he's dealing with an injury.
Speaker 6 (01:31:59):
But he was the star left tackle for the for Ohio.
Speaker 11 (01:32:02):
State previously had been at San Diego State before he transferred.
But he's six foot five, he's three hundred and ten.
He's a dancing bear. Everybody talks about how the Seahawks
have to improve their interior of the offensive line. A
lot of people are forgetting the fact that Abe Lucas
has proven to be nothing but inconsistent and unreliable unfortunately
at the right tackle position. In Charles Cross technically is
(01:32:25):
entering his fourth season next year. That's the file. You know,
he's got one more year in his rookie contract, but
still that the Seahawks may be looking for an offensive
lineman who can play guard but also could slide outside
to play tackle. Again, With all due respect to the
young talent the Seahawks have, like a Mike Durreller Stone
forsythe I don't know that either of them have proven
that they are long term solutions.
Speaker 6 (01:32:46):
So a versatile, talented player who's.
Speaker 11 (01:32:48):
On the mend, and that might be one of the
reasons why he would slip down number eighteen. Otherwise, this
is a top twelve, top fifteen caliber player, and I
do think that this is a good draft. Should John
Schneider side that this is the draft that he wants
to address?
Speaker 6 (01:33:02):
The offensive life?
Speaker 7 (01:33:03):
All right, there's always rang.
Speaker 5 (01:33:05):
You gave me all kinds of things to just jump
off on tangent wise, which I love about you. I'm
gonna ask two questions going and I'll come back to
Ohio State Texas in a second. Let me start with
cause you mentioned Jamior Gibbs. I've heard people say that
they like Jeremiah Love from from Notre Dame better than
maybe better than maybe say an Ashton Genty, etc. What
(01:33:30):
do you think about the running back from from Penn State,
Jeremiah Love.
Speaker 7 (01:33:32):
Where would you put him?
Speaker 5 (01:33:33):
Because there's now all of this a little bit of
an emphasis I think on running backs now with the
years we've seen with Barkley and other guys.
Speaker 8 (01:33:38):
In the league.
Speaker 6 (01:33:39):
Yeah, no question.
Speaker 11 (01:33:40):
But and then what a spectacular performance that he had
last night. I mean, it was just inspirational. I mean,
there was the one run where he basically leaks over
one defender kind of Marshar Lynch, kind of stag crab legs,
staggered walked to get around another defender with a nice
stiff arm and then just drove his body and care
some space to be able to get a touchdown. Just
(01:34:02):
an absolute spectacular play. It's funny Notre Dame running backs
often have struggled to duplicate their success in the NFL
just because they are it's blocked so well at the
line of scrimmage there. Of course, they have a running
quarterback in Riley Leonard as well, and so it's difficult
to gauge those types of running backs. I really thought
(01:34:22):
that Odric Estime, who wound up going the fifth round
a year ago to the Denver Broncos, was the best
back in last year's Classy, and then he ran a
four to six at the combine and Stock absolutely slid,
and I really think that he's gonna wind up being
a very successful NFL back.
Speaker 6 (01:34:38):
I'm curious to see if Love does the same thing.
Speaker 11 (01:34:40):
I see a guy who's got four or five type
of speed, and when Ashton gen runs in the four
threes or low four fours. Some of the other backs,
as I mentioned Quinshawn Jenkins from Ohio State being another one.
Speaker 6 (01:34:53):
You know, the Ruggers kid that you know. Unfortunately for
Husky fans they remember all too well.
Speaker 11 (01:34:58):
Also, there's some really talent to backs this year, and
so when it's all sudden done, I think the love
is going to be in that you know, day two
kind of a mix, but certainly has starting caliber potential.
Speaker 5 (01:35:08):
Okay, random question before I get back to the actual
game itself. Well, you can talk about the game because
he's going to have a big impact. Where would Jeremiah
Smith go in this year's draft? The wide receiver from
Ohio State.
Speaker 11 (01:35:18):
Yeah, we're talking top five, you know, top five overall,
easily the number one wide receiver. I mean he's eighteen
years old, and I mean it's absolutely you know, mind
boggling to and say that.
Speaker 6 (01:35:29):
But it's funny. I give you know, my editors and
Fox a lot of credit.
Speaker 11 (01:35:35):
They basically asked me a couple of months ago, like, hey,
this freshman wide receiver for Ohio State is you know,
is absolutely tearing things up? Can you write an article
specifically about him? And I kind of chuckle to myself
and just not Jaez. You don't really know what I do.
I don't even pay attention to freshmen, you know, but
six foot threes two hundred and twenty pounds.
Speaker 6 (01:35:55):
I talked about the body control with Tyler Wawren.
Speaker 11 (01:35:57):
When guys are as big six foot three two that
are just they're just physically built like a like a man,
not an eighteen year old young man ian. Every time
I watch him, there's two names that keep jumping out
to me, Terrell Owens and Julio Jones.
Speaker 6 (01:36:14):
I mean, those are the only two names.
Speaker 11 (01:36:16):
I think that he's got more lateral agility and flexibility
than DK Metcalf, which is saying something, of course, because
DK Metcalf is an unbelievable athlete in his own right.
But that's the caliber of players we're talking about, and
I just don't like this wide receiver class. I think
that Jeremiah Smith would again be in that top five consideration,
maybe even number one overall. A couple of weeks ago,
(01:36:38):
you have asked me about Travis Hunter should be a receiver?
Should it be a corner part of the argument why
he is the best receiver as well as best corner
in his classes because the receiver classes isn't very good.
Jeremiah Smith would make this receiver class a spectacular one.
Speaker 7 (01:36:52):
It is our good friend, Rob Rang.
Speaker 5 (01:36:54):
Rob Rang from Fox Sports dot Com also scouts for
the BC Lions along the Way. Well, let me, yeah,
let's talk about the quarterbacks tonight and if there's a
pro potential or not, because I don't think you know,
I mean Quinn Youwers seems like he can make a
hell of a lot more money in the Texas quarterback
at Texas along the Way and you know Will Howard
at Ohio State are either one of those guys pro prospects.
(01:37:15):
Deep down, I guess viewers would be he sure doesn't
excite me. What are we looking for those two quarterbacks?
Speaker 11 (01:37:21):
Well, well, Quinn here is us this comparison before, and
it's a dangerous one because of all the success that
that he has had. But you know, when you look
at these young men in person, Quinn Ewers, he's listed
at six foot two, two hundred and ten pounds. You
know in Brock Purty who was listed to Iowa State
back in the day at six foot one, two hundred
(01:37:41):
and ten pounds, that they have such slim shoulders, and
you rarely see that the quarterback position, at least with
guys who wind up going on to success. Obviously, usually
they're in the six foot three plus range, got big
broad holes. Even a shorter quarterback to Russell Wilson, well,
he was short, he was stocky, he was well built.
Quinn Ewers, you know, looks like a box boy at
(01:38:04):
the local safeway or something. He is just not physically impressive,
but he is such an instinctive player. He throws the
ball with as good of anticipation as any quarterback in
his class. In my opinion that there's no question that
Steve Sarkesian's offense is you know, it definitely has helped
him be successful, and he certainly has a.
Speaker 6 (01:38:23):
Great deal of talent.
Speaker 11 (01:38:24):
Obviously, he arguably has the best tackle tandem in all
of college football as well, with with Kelvin Banks that
left tackle Cameron Williams another candidate for the Seahawks at
the right tackle position. Quickly, the right tackle Cameron Williams
six foot five, three hundred and thirty five pounds, so
similar to what I talked about with Ohio State, talking
(01:38:45):
about a guy that can move inside to play guard,
Cameron Williams can do that.
Speaker 6 (01:38:50):
So again, I think that's.
Speaker 11 (01:38:52):
That's what makes this game so fascinating is Ohio State
is built on defense and skilled position talent.
Speaker 6 (01:38:58):
Will Howard's a solid quarterback.
Speaker 11 (01:39:00):
Love the improvement that he's shown over the last month
and a half of the season. Obviously that they you know,
the disappointing loss frankly to a Michigan team that isn't
very good, and Will Howard did not play well in
that game, but he played spectacularly so far in the playoffs,
and curious to see what he's gonna do against Texas
team that it's got some talent in the secondary. Jada
Barron is their top corner. He's a spectacular player, first
(01:39:22):
round caliber player as well. So this is gonna be
quite the matchup. We talked about Jeremiah Smith, the Ohio
State wide receiver. He's gonna be going up against a
legitimate first round corner, first round caliber cornerback.
Speaker 6 (01:39:32):
So it's going to be a challenge for Will Howard.
Speaker 11 (01:39:34):
But for my money, when talking about quarter when we're
talking about quarterbacks, I just really like the instincts and
the anticipation again of Quinn viewers, and then Oh, by
the way, if the unthinkable happens, quin Ewers goes down,
then you just have arch Manning, a red shirt freshman
who is a future number one overall candidate, just like
his dad, just like his his uncle, just like his
(01:39:56):
grandfather Archie Manning all those years ago. You know, unbeliev
talent who the future is so bright for him that
you know you can get away with wearing that Texas
Bury orange.
Speaker 5 (01:40:06):
Yeah. I don't want to put you in a bad
position because you worked for Fox Sports dot Com and
the British Columbia Lines. But I'm sitting here in a
sports book at St. Colombia Casino, our big show sponsors
for Colombia Casino and Hotel. Who has the over all
Just ask it this way, Rob, who has the overall
advantage tonight, Ohio State or Texas?
Speaker 11 (01:40:25):
You know, I think in terms of talent, I think
you have to go Ohio State. That's that said. Quarterbacks,
of course, are more important. As I just said, I
really think that Texas has the most talented quarterback room
in the draft.
Speaker 6 (01:40:37):
Uh, you know and in the country.
Speaker 2 (01:40:39):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (01:40:39):
Steve Sarkisian.
Speaker 11 (01:40:40):
When this last game against Arizona State got down to
it Steve Sarkisia felt like he just kind of shifted
gears in terms of his play calling, and so I
think that that the quarterback play gives Texas a chance. Otherwise,
I really think that the just the sheer talent level
of Ohio State is too much. I would go with
Ohio State. Do you think it's gonna be a close game?
(01:41:01):
And I do think that there's a chance that Texas
is able to kind of steal it late just because
of the you know, the heroiesn't frankly of quinn Ewers,
even though again I don't view him as a as
a first or second round pick kind of a guy.
I think we're talking about more third or fourth round.
But I do think that he has played his best
ball in critical situations. Is He's shown his ability on
the road in Tuscaloos a couple of years ago, winning
(01:41:23):
the SEC this year. Of course, all those different things
to me that that matters orreas will Will Howard, I'm a.
Speaker 6 (01:41:30):
Little bit skeptical.
Speaker 11 (01:41:31):
So again I'm gonna go with Ohio State because talent
usually trumps all, but at the quarterback position, there's no
doubt that Texas has a fighting chance.
Speaker 5 (01:41:41):
If you're down at the Tombwater for Rellies and you
see a fatigued looking gentleman wearing British Columbia Lions orange gear.
It's probably our friend Rob Rang as he completes his
move into his new place down there. If you see him,
go say hi and ask him who the Seahawks should draft.
Speaker 7 (01:41:55):
No, I can't leave Rob alone. He'll be tired.
Speaker 5 (01:41:58):
He'll be having that Northwest claud pizza, just chilling out
down there at Ferrelli's Pizza Freliespizza dot com. My friend,
great stuff. We will talk at some point next week,
either probably Friday or No. I probably still do Friday
because we'll get a preview of Notre Dame versus fill
in the blank for the first ever twelve team college
football playoff.
Speaker 7 (01:42:16):
Can't wait to do that, my friend.
Speaker 11 (01:42:18):
Thank you, Thank you as William and looking forward to
the next conversation.
Speaker 5 (01:42:22):
As always, our great friend, Rob Rang, Foxsports dot com.
We'll take a break, come back. Check the text line
